Loser, Buddy (a Loser, Baby rewrite for a friend of mine)

Based off an offshoot of Trapped Forever AU by @madcatdaderpydrawer-blog ((this is also for Madcat because they're Trapped Forever AU is awesome and gives me many fun ideas to work with for concept like this.))

Characters used Taurus and Tf Lunar/Traveller

Taurus:

So things are bad, and you're pressed against a wall

Your whole life is pretty hopeless

You're rather filthy, like a divebar bathroom stall

Can't face the world supported or adored

You lost your way, you know your life is shit

Well I'm here to say you're..Correct!

Traveller:

Wait- what?

Taurus:

You're a loser buddy, a loser you fucking baby

You're a messed up little crybaby bitch

Traveller:

Hey-!!

Taurus:

You're a loser, much like me

Traveller:

Thanks asshat

Taurus:

You're a screws-loose loser

An only one star reviews-er

You're a pillow princess in a pit

But you have company

Traveller:

Are you- trying to comfort me??

Taurus:

There was a time, I wouldn't think anyone could relate

To the gruesome ways in why I'm damaged

This is for @calcium-cat because I didn’t really want to shove all of this in an ask. Anyhow, it’s been a rough week, so I decided to go revisit One Small Dream. I couldn’t stop smiling as I read it! I had (regretfully) forgotten how cute and sweet the whole book is. Granted, there are the angsty points, but the story is just so much richer with all the trouble lurking beneath the fluff. I could go on and on about this story; it’s one of my absolute favorites out of all the stories I’ve read!! And because I love music, I happen to come across songs that I realize fit OSD or one of its many amazing AUs. I’ve made a little playlist, and then a full animatic idea (the latter will be under the cut)

Here is for the last song. I just couldn’t resist and it’s just so perfect-

The intro lyrics show scenes of how things were for the apple twins—when times were good, before the villagers showed up.

1st Verse The first half of the first verse is Dream always leaving with “you tried to run away, but I begged you to stay”. “Where’d you go? I don’t know” shows Nightmare looking on in sadness, and through the whoa it could show stages of maturity, and the expression goes from sad to angry to bitter, to resentful (or it could show the moments right before the main part of the Apple Incident, so  Nightmare losing his eye and all that).  The second part of the first verse (“you tried to medicate”) is the whole of the Apple Incident, and “but you found there’s no escape” is the ensuing corruption. “Where’d you go, all alone?” is the aftermath. 

First Chorus The first half of the first chorus can be them looking back on the whole thing, maybe meeting each other on opposite sides of the battlefield for the first time. There are all sorts of conflicting emotions, but anger and grief are the most prominent along with the startling/frightening realization that they’re going to fight against each other now. Maybe those moments don’t come in until the bass (so the second half), and the first half of the chorus can be maybe a flashback to when things were right between them… I don’t have good specific scenes for this one, I’m sorry. 

Alternatively, they meet, and then Dream tries saying “we shared the same home and mother…” (and he’s being much more genuine this first time), and at “we need each other”, Nightmare scowls, probably laughs in the irony and hysterical anger (because he’s still a little more unhinged and the wounds are still raw). Then Nightmare responds with the bass, “you still love her…you don’t need to suffer…” which can imply Dream still loves the rest in general more than him, that Dream should surrender the fight (and probably his life). Or, instead of a vocal retaliation, Nightmare just attacks.

Second Verse First part of the second verse flashes forward through all the years of fighting, and it starts as Dream’s “stop being evil; I ‘forgive’ you” speech. “I wished it all away” is Nightmare’s inner hatred for it. Then Dream continues with, “Why’d you go? I don’t know!” 

Second Chorus The first half of the second chorus is various battle scenes. They’re at each other’s throats, and their attacks are brutal. The implication of the rift between them growing is obvious. 

Second half of the chorus is Nightmare, probably all roughed up from a recent battle and the idea for the suppressant comes to mind. He’s thinking “you don’t need to suffer” to himself, and scoffs at the following lyric: “brother”. The lone “brother” could focus on the Vial, but I’m not sure.

Bridge(??) This has a series of scenes from the “hook” (beginning, but hook sounds cooler so-) of OSD: the moment where Nightmare kidnaps Dream, an image of the vial/potion moment (where Dream’s drinking it), then an image of little Dream staring up, and at the oh, Nightmare’s staring down in horror/shock/etc. 

The second sequence follows through key events of OSD thus far: the visit to Sci, Nightmare finding Dream in the forest, Dream with Nightmare after he loses the tentacle (taking care of him or the skull touch when they’re falling asleep, I can’t decide), then Dream clutching the crown as he and Nightmare stare at each other. 

Bridge... Part II? Third Verse??? I can’t music-  “Brother, that could’ve been me…” could be Nightmare explaining what happened, and “I feel so broke” is absolutely Dream’s soul-broken look when he thinks it’s his fault. “When I look in your eyes,” they meet each other’s gazes (Nightmare with his suspicion/fear that Dream wouldn’t want to be his brother, Dream just before he breaks). “And I don’t see mine” is where Dream throws himself into Nightmare’s arms—maybe this even includes an overlay audio of Dream whispering “sorry” through his tears.

And this is where I get stuck because I can’t figure out how exactly to fill the last stanza. I just can’t think of something chronologically accurate and still make it flow smoothly. So alternatively, from the “that could have been me” line on, it could play out a little faster. So the first line stays the same (explanations), but on “broke” is where Dream flings himself into Nightmare. At “when I look in your eyes”, Nightmare strokes the back of Dream’s skull before pulling back, and “and I don’t see mine” is where he’s apologizing, bowing his skull because he’s thinking it’s all his fault. 

Ending “Oh, brother,” Dream cups Nightmare’s face, saying he forgives him with a grin. Then, his face falls to confusion, he sits back and question marks appear as he’s asking (there are two images for this line, first the forgiveness, then the questions—follow the rhythm/timing of the piano chords, not the vocals). 

Nightmare answers during “we share the same home and mother”, still looking pretty remorseful, maybe a bit anxious. Dream stands up and puts the crown on his brother’s head at “we need each other”, and then their gazes meet at “brother”. 

The last, lone “brother” has them keeping each other in a tight embrace.

End notes! I know this is probably really hard to read since it’s so quote-heavy, but I don’t want to separate every line, if that makes sense? I want to keep the verses and choruses together. I hope splitting halfway through them and labelling each part helped keep this easier to read, but didn’t blur all the ideas together in one go. If you made it down here, congrats! Nomaris Mahariel - Halla Toy; A toy deer carved out of wood and painted white; it almost resembles the Halla of the Dalish.

Maeve Hawke - Riding Boots; A proper lady would not be seen muddying up her fine dress shoes while riding horseback.

In’nan Lavellan- Fragment of Elvish; A fragmented stone with an old elvish inscription upon it, waiting to be translated.
