My List of Personally Favorite and Great Fairy Tales Fanfics

Yep, you hear right. There are still fanfics being written for fairy tales. While most of them tend to be smut or crossovers with Disney movies, I have found great gems lurking beneath. (Reminder: this list can be updated if I find more)

Kabr feels the Light.

Like the creak of his joints. Bone and brass rubbing painfully in his right elbow as he lifts Praedyth’s limp body in his arms. As he arranges the pieces of their Ghosts in each of their hands.

He wants to cry for them. He wants to cry for them all, but he suspects his tear ducts have already been scrapped out, it’s already so hard to move his eyelids. Instead he cradles his own Ghost in his hands. A vine slowly grows to curl around its shell from the cut in his palm.

Kabr remembers Praedyth telling him once, whispering under the night like a secret. That he’d Wished. Wished for them to never end.So Kabr will not let them end. He will not let them be lost.

Kabr does not feel the Light anymore.

Had some spirited screams with @gileonnen on twitter earlier about a 'what if the VoG trio took the place of the Kentarch crew as the Garden trio' scenario because Gil always has good ideas and this came of it

But what if the elves keep inventing written languages /because their soulmate marks are written in whatever will be the dominant writing system when they meet/--there is a real and urgent need to decode those marks as soon as possible, which actually creates the very muddle that it was meant to solve.

I’m noticing a super fascinating trend on Goodreads as reviews roll in from folks who got preview copies of The Pursued and the Pursuing.  There are plenty of works out there that began their lives as shorter transformative works online and were subsequently expanded into novels (which is the case with TP&TP), or which were posted online as fanfiction novels in their entirety and got pulled to be transformed into something original (what we often call “filing the serial numbers off”).  I’ve made a point of following the way readers react to those over the years, and my interest is even more piqued now.  There are also plenty of other novels that are based on classic works now in the public domain.

Many of the same readers and writers who (here on Tumblr and on other transformative works-oriented/fandom-inhabited platforms) maintain that fanfiction is a legitimate form of writing and should be accorded the same consideration as original published work are the same people I see leaving sentiments along the lines of “well, this was fine as a piece of fanfic online, but it should never have been published as a real book.”  

That’s puzzling rhetoric to see from people who value this art form that we’re engaged in creating and consuming.  Every published work that began its life as a piece of transformative work draws remarks like this, and so frequently from people who are traceable to/active in fandom.  I’d be curious to know if anyone is studying this.  I definitely expect this kind of commentary from readers approaching these works from outside of fandom, as disdain for fanfiction is well documented in non-fandom literary circles.

The fascinating part is not that some fandom readers leave negative reviews (it happens all the time, regardless where a reader is coming from), but that they use variations on this particular sentiment.  Why say “this is fine for fandom, but doesn’t belong in the world of traditionally published work” as your primary crit?  There are so many other reasons and ways to criticize works, regardless of where they originated.  I imagine that taking this angle must make the positive feedback you leave for stories on, say, AO3 look disingenuous, because if that work went on to be published in a new incarnation, you’d have nothing positive or constructively critical to say about it at all.

Fandom is frequently a strange place, and its overlaps with the mainstream literary world are even stranger.  As an academic, if I wasn’t already deeply engaged in research in another field, I would be looking into this phenomenon in a heartbeat!

(I’m including these incisive responses from @gileonnen and @astroloquacious, because, yikes, the simplest possible hypocrisy that could explain this hadn’t even occurred to me.)
