With a background in illustration, Gill Button has established a reputation for taking as inspiration images of models and figures from the pages of fashion websites and magazines and re-versioning them into intimate portraits. With a deft touch of the paintbrush, she succeeds in investing each one with human emotion, feelings such as vulnerability, assertiveness, defiance or just plain cool.

The more you find yourself wanting, the more you want.” My very favourite thing about Cleopatra and Frankenstein is how often I was left surprised. Surprised by how almost every character revealed themselves to be more than what I initially assumed. Surprised by how moved I was by their struggles and vulnerabilities. Surprised by the turns the story took. Surprised that I still have tears left in my body after the battering my heart took from the last book I read. The writing was so vivid and alive and cinematic. I love that we got tiny peeks into all the people who touched Cleo and Frank’s lives, but more than anything I loved Eleanor and Eleanor’s mom. I have read Eleanor’s chapters over and over again and there are only two. Gill Button

Born in 1973, lives and works in London

/Having graduated with a BA (hons) in Illustration in 1995, London based artist Gill Button has enjoyed a successful career illustrating for clients such as varied as British Airways, Vanity Fair, The Times, Gallimard Jeunesse and The UN. Having worked to brief for many years, Gill’s primary focus is now on creating her own work, predominantly concentrating on her lifelong passion for capturing the human form. With several exhibitions under her belt, including the highly prestigious Threadneedle Prize for Figurative Art, her work is now in private collections across the world including New York, Paris, London, Milan and Shanghai.
