Hello everyone!

Here again to introduce you to another fantasy show. This series, made for Netflix, is for now composed of two seasons. First broadcast in 2021, the story is an adaptation from the literary world created by Leigh Bardugo. Today, the show I will introduce you to is Shadow and Bone !

And now, to begin with as always, a little summary : The kingdom of Ravka has been cursed for millennia. Its fate now rests on the shoulders of an orphan, Alina Starkov, who works as a cartographer in Ravka's First Army. When her childhood friend, Malyen ‘Mal’ Oretsev, an orphan like her, is enlisted to take part in a boat crossing the Shadow Fold, a dangerous, dark and evil fog that cuts Ravka in two, Alina manages to go with him. In the middle of the Fold, as the crew is decimated by evil flying creatures, the terrified young cartographer begins to project beams of light that drive them away and allow the boat to emerge from the Fold. Word of her feat soon spreads and Alina discovers herself to be the Sun Summoner, a Saint steeped in beliefs dating back thousands of years and the only one capable of destroying the Fold to reunite Ravka. In this world, the Grishas, people with various magical talents, form the Second Army of Ravka under the command of General Aleksander Kirigan. Alina is taken by Kirigan to the royal castle at Os Alta to be trained and to meet the king. Meanwhile, in Ketterdam, a team led by Kaz Brekker, the Crows, have been offered a very large sum of money to capture the Summoner of Light. To complete their mission, Kaz, assisted by Jesper Fahey and Inej Ghafa, must find a way to cross the Fold… Who can Alina trust? Will she be able to rid Ravka of the Fold? Will she be able to escape the Crows? Who is Kirigan really? As I said above, the series is a Netflix adaptation of two of Leigh Bardugo's literary sagas: the Grisha trilogy and the Six of Crows literary duology. Having read the books a few years ago and the author herself having been involved in the project, my expectations were pretty high. So I'm going to tell you what I thought of the resulting product.

I'm going to start by talking briefly about the production team because, in my opinion, this gives a pretty good idea of the quality of the construction of the atmosphere of this universe. Between Eric Heisserer (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Final Destination 5, Bird Box), Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Deadpool and Wolverine), Dan Cohen (Stranger Things, The Adam Project) and Dan Levine (Arrival, Freedom Writers), the producers of Shadow and Bone are used to fantasy and fantastic productions that require particular attention to special effects and atmosphere. That's why the team they've built around them (costumes, sets, music and visual effects) has been meticulously chosen, and I'll be coming back to the work of each of them later.

To give you as brief an idea as possible of the characters and their respective stories, I'll start by giving you a little background on the universe in which the series takes place. The chronology of the two merged sagas was certainly the point that made me the most sceptical. The Grisha trilogy doesn't take place at the same time as the Six of Crows duology and, although some of the characters can be found in both sagas, I couldn't quite see how they were going to merge. So I'm going to tell you a little bit about the three different stories that run parallel in season 1, with slight spoilers about the first episode. I'll only be concentrating on season 1 so as not to give too much away, so there are characters and stories I'll be deliberately omitting, although I'd love to talk about them…

THE UNIVERSE

The Shadow and Bone series plunges us into a fantasy universe in which the different populations of the six nations of Ravka, Fjerda, Shu Han, Kerch, Novyi Zem and Wandering Isle adapt elements of the language, culture and traditions of the countries of our world, drawn from different periods. Each of these populations is partly made up of people with magical abilities. These people, called Grishas by the common people, can be categorized into three different sections depending on their abilities:

Corporialkis are Grishas who have the ability to alter the physical state of a living being, either to heal them (Healers) or incapacitate them (Heartrenders).

Materlialkis are Grishas who have the ability to transform materials such as iron.

Etherealkis are Grishas who have the ability to manipulate the elements.

THE PREMICE

The nation of Ravka is divided in two, from east to west, by the Shadow Fold (also known as the Unsea), a region plunged into darkness and filled with beasts created centuries ago by a Grisha known as the Black Heretic. Ravka is also at war with Fjerda, which is seeking its independence from the king of Ravka. General Kirigan -played by Ben Barnes- leads Ravka's Second Army in these conflicts, which threaten the lives not only of the people of Ravka but of the whole world. To ensure the survival of his people, he searches in vain for the Summoner of Light, who, according to legend, is the only one who can destroy the Shadow Fold.

When the series begins, we meet the various protagonists:

* ARC GRISHA

Alina Starkov -played by Jessie Mei Li- is a young woman, half Shu, who grew up in an orphanage with her best friend Malyen "Mal" Oretsev -played by Archie Renaux. In the first episode, we discover that she is a cartographer in Ravka's army and that Mal has been enlisted as a tracker. But when, during an expedition, she reveals herself to be the Sun Summoner -an Etherealki with the rare power to summon light-, her destiny eludes her. Mal does everything in his power to protect her, but General Kirigan takes her to the Little Palace. He wants her to learn about her power there, but also to give hope to the Ravkan people that the Fold can be destroyed. We discover in the first episode that he is an Etherealki capable of summoning darkness, which is why he has been nicknamed "The Darkling". It's a very rare ability, like that of the Sun Summoner, which is why he is admired and feared by many. At the Little Palace, Alina meets Genya Safin - played by Daisy Head -a Healer known for her great beauty. Genya, initially sent to train her in the customs of the Little Palace, becomes Alina's confidante. During her stay at the Little Palace, Alina also meets Baghra Morosova -played by Zoë Wanamaker. She is introduced as one of Alina's instructors at the Little Palace, the Second Army's training facility. She is strict in her teaching of Alina's mastery of light summoning.

* ARC CROWS

Kaz "Dirtyhands" Brekker -played by Freddy Carter- is an experienced thief with a reputation for completing any mission if the price is right. He is the de facto leader of the Crows and has a personal vendetta against Pekka Rollins. Severely haptophobic -a rare phobia involving the fear of touching or being touched, an acute exaggeration of normal protective tendencies in personal space- and suffering from osteonecrosis in his right leg which causes him to limp, he has to use a cane with a pommel shaped like a crow's skull to help him get around and sometimes in combat as a weapon. Together with Inej Ghafa known as "The Wraith" -played by Amita Suman- and Jesper Fahey, a Baelish-Zemini sharpshooter -played by Kit Young- Kaz embarks on a new mission for a mysterious sponsor: they must find, kidnap and bring back to Ketterdam the Sun Summoner. If their mission is successful, Kaz will have the means to take revenge on Pekka and save those closest to him.

* ARC NINA / MATTHIAS

While Nina Zenik -played by Danielle Galligan- was on Wandering Isle on a mission for the Second Army with Zoya Nazyalensky, she found herself trapped in a Fjerdan drüskelle camp amongst whom was Matthias Helvar -played by Callahan Skogman. As Fjerdans consider Grishas to be evil, Nina was taken prisoner, interrogated and tortured. The ship on which she was held prisoner was caught in a storm and destroyed. Matthias survived the shipwreck thanks to Nina's powers which kept their bodies warm long enough to reach the shore, and so they survived together for three weeks in the wilds of Fjerda.

CASTING

It took me a couple of episodes to realise that I shouldn't see season 1 of Shadow and Bone as an adaptation of the first Six of Crows novel but rather as a mission carried out by Jesper, Kaz and Inej before the first Six of Crows book. While this may be uninteresting for readers of the novels, I find the idea of allowing us to learn more about the characters we love before the adventures in which we discover them quite interesting. It includes us even more in the evolution of the characters, and allows readers to discover a new adventure. And I'm thinking that, if I hadn't read the books, this isn't a detail I would have dwelt on. I actually loved discovering the characters I love so much in this adventure, before they were them, before they all met each other too.

I particularly enjoyed that they developed the meeting between Nina and Matthias in season 1, which makes sense as their meeting happens long before the adventures of Six of Crows. To me, it is far more interesting to have it as a story spun throughout a season than as a 5 minute flashback told by a character in a later season. It was always with the greatest relish that I relearned to love their meeting and I must salute once again the quality of the casting, particularly for these two characters who for me have the most beautiful chemistry this first season.

I must also applaud the casting of Jesper and Inej. I hadn't imagined Jesper to be exactly the same physically (in truth, I saw him with his hair shaved like in the illustrations), but Kit Young won me over from the first minutes he appeared on screen. His carefree energy, empathy, humour and ego immediately struck a chord with me and restored the image of Jesper I had in my memory from reading the books. As for Inej, Amita Suman is perfect in the role. Perfect casting. Whether in her appearance, her posture, her uprightness or her facial expressions, her performance gave me the impression of seeing the character straight out of the book come to life before my very eyes. It was magic.

I was a little less enthralled by Kaz in season 1. Mind you, Freddy Carter is very good, but for me there was an essential element missing from Kaz's story that we didn't get until season 2, and, for me, that's what makes all the difference in the way I feel about the character between the two seasons. But he's still Kaz, with all his faults and a few qualities too, and Freddy Carter brought this complex character to life perfectly.

As far as the Grisha novels are concerned, this first season follows the first book of the series rather well, although there have inevitably been a few adaptations, particularly in terms of the characters present. Yet, it's nothing too different from the events of the first book of the saga. The various performances by the actors and actresses fill out the characters rather well and the range of emotions portrayed is interesting but, and this is a personal opinion, some of the chemistry is unfortunately not there and that's a shame because it's a crucial part of the story…

I'd still like to make a special mention of three characters who, although they barely appeared in season 1, are developed in season 2 and whose actors deserve to be praised for their performances. I won't go into detail about the characters, but I'd like to thank Suzanne Smith for casting Jack Wolfe, Patrick Gibson and Sujaya Dasgupta in the major roles they play. They perfectly complemented the expected chemistry with the first-season characters and I was delighted to discover them in these roles.

REPRESENTATIONS

I'd also like to say a few words about the respect for different representations, whether racial -respecting the different characteristics of each nation, Novyi Zem and Shu-Han in particular- but also the representations of the LGBT+ community with different homosexual relationships. Of course, these aspects were already present in the novels but, given the current international climate, I think it's important that, during production, these aspects were not smoothed over or exaggerated. Whatever our origins, sexual orientation or gender identity, we're all the same, we're all human, and that's what should come first. To be honest, this is one of the subjects I enjoyed most when reading the novels: tolerance and acceptance. Beyond anything that might set us apart from one another, instead of pitting us against one another, let's stand together, let's be united.

SETTINGS

I'd now like to talk a little about the filming locations. The main shooting location for the first season was in and around Budapest and Keszthely in Hungary. Various locations were used to symbolise Ravka, such as the Ethnographic Museum, which served as the throne room of the Grand Palace, Buda Castle for the exterior of the Royal Archives, the exterior of the same castle and in particular its medieval roundel as Grisha's training grounds and Os Alta's gates, the old Stock Exchange for the interior of the Royal Archives and finally the main square for the Novokribirsk city set.

Outside Budapest, the exterior and interior of the Festetics Palace were used to create the Little Palace, and the Winter Festival was held in its concert hall. There's also the Amadé-Bajzáth-Pappenheim mansion that gave birth to the Keramzin orphanage, the town of Szentendre gave birth to that of Ryevost, and the royal palace of Gödöllő for the stable and chapel. A flashback scene was filmed in the ruined Széchényi-Wenckheim manor house in Békéscsaba.

Other shootings took place in Vancouver such as the scenes taking place in Ketterdam that were entirely built in the studio.

SPECIAL EFFECTS

Speaking of studio-built sets, I'd like to focus on the series' special effects. Under the artistic direction of Attila Digi Kövári, Francesc Masso and Zoltán Sárdi, the series' special effects were meticulously created. Whether it's the rendering of the Grishas' spells -particularly those of the Etherealki, which are the most visual- or the creation of the Shadow Fold using a green background, the care that has gone into these effects is extremely meticulous. I'm not saying that at certain rare moments you can't see the use of the green screen, because that would be a lie, but on the whole I'm quite impressed by the visual rendering that has been given to this magical universe.

COSTUMES

Before my last stop, I'd like to talk a little about the artistic direction of the costumes. Supervised by Wendy Partridge, the costumes I'm going to talk about can be divided into three categories.

First of all, the first costumes we see are those of the soldiers of the First Army. They have influences reminiscent of the dress worn by Russian soldiers during the first half of the 20th century.

This Russian influence is reinforced later in the season when we attend the festivities at the Little Palace. The outfits of the Ravkane royalty and the Grishas soldiers present remind me of the visuals in Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace -particularly the adaptation made into a mini-series in 2016.

The second aspect that the costumes inspire in me would be a more Western influence with the costumes in Ketterdam. Kaz's in particular, with his greatcoat, hat and walking stick, reminds me a lot of Peaky Blinders with Cillian Murphy.

Finally, and this is something I've already mentioned, I appreciate that the various cultural influences brought by each nation are visible. I'm thinking in particular of Inej's outfits, which, as a Suli, have South Asian influences in them, or the outfits of the Shu people - mainly visible in season 2- which are more reminiscent of traditional Asian outfits. It's important in costume to show the diversity of the world -whether real or imagined- but above all to do so in a way that respects the cultures from which we draw our inspiration.

MUSIC

Last stop before the end of this very long article: the series' soundtrack. I really enjoyed the work on the soundtrack created by Joseph Trapanese -who is behind the soundtracks for The Greatest Showman, Quantico and The Witcher amongst others- and in particular the different themes written for the characters over the two seasons of Shadow and Bone. The diversity of the instruments used also reflects the multicultural nature of this rich universe and contributes to a varied representation in the same way as the work on the costumes, the different languages and the casting of the actors themselves. In an interview with AwardsDaily.com, Joseph Trapanese explained that the music for season 1 was composed over 11 months during the pandemic and how he conducted an orchestra through meetings on Zoom. He also explained that Russian and Slavic influences were incorporated as a basis for his compositions, as Leigh Bardugo -the author of the novels- had cited Sergei Prokofiev and folk music as examples of inspiration when she was writing. Joseph Trapanese cited other musical traditions such as gamelan- the traditional ensemble music of the Javanese, Sundanese and Balinese peoples of Indonesia consisting mainly of percussion instruments, being inspirations for certain pieces.

CONCLUSION

And that's it, I think I've gone on long enough with this review of Shadow and Bone. I hope you've enjoyed it and that I've managed to make you want to get involved in this adventure, despite its cancellation by Netflix before season 3 due to "the writers' strikes in 2023" as Netflix explained.

Personally, I had high expectations having read the books, and I have to admit that never before has a series adaptation of a work I've read won me over so much. Whether you've read the books or not, if this type of adventure appeals to you, I can only warmly advise you to go for it! And if you want to, why not read the novels!

Hi! I like to read your opinions about eruri, and I like this vast sight you have being there for years. In 2021 – at the very end of the story I started to appreciate in 2015 – I decided to re-watch it and came across a fanart of Erwin and Levi together as a couple (I've never entered the fandom "circles" before, tbh). Well, when I read the manga /watched the anime for the first time, I had an "impression" about their relationship. I never gave them much thought as I was firstly and mostly an Armin supporter and I basically followed the first three seasons because I needed to know what the fuck was going on and I needed to see Armin reach the damn ocean.

Erwin was a character I strongly appreciated given his will to sacrificing his own and his soldiers' lives, his death really touched me though I was relieved that Armin still had a chance to reach his dream.

I didn't really like Levi until the uprising arc, I didn't understand his motivation until I watched No Regrets (I watched it after finishing s3p1). When he first appeared in the story I felt strange about his and Erwin's relationship: Erwin was the Commander but Levi acted freely around him, even disrespecting him, and after a couple of episodes he was "I'll obey Sir". Levi was close with Hanji but even closer with the Commander, and Erwin only spoke "as a peer" to Pixies and Zachary (sometimes) and Levi most of the time.

The "woah" moment was after the uprising arc: Erwin planning rts and Levi begging him to stay safe home, an absurd request tbh: Not Hanji, nor any other Squad Leader proposed anything like that; the Commander had to be there, because he's trusted and more importantly because he represents the SC. So, Levi? This not only was "odd" from a (I'll say) militaristic point of view, but Levi there acted really emotionally. At this point of the story we have seen his more emotional side, we've seen him angry and concerned, but not to this extent.

Then, rts. Levi giving Erwin a reassuring speach, making the choice on his behalf, commanding him to his death. And Erwin's relieved smile, his "Thank you". This was a peak moment, it showed complete trust (we also knew that Levi trusted Erwin completely, but the other way around is truly showed here), it showed the deep comprehension Levi has about the Commander, it showed Levi's ability to sacrifice his own feelings for what's best for humanity and Erwin.

The serum-bowl was just the culmination of it. It was the "emotional" side of Levi's previous logical choice. He wants to save Erwin so badly there, and not because he is the Commander, but because he didn't want him to die in the first place (Levi's egoistic feeling). He's about to give him the serum, the choice is made, and it is the best choice for humanity, the choice Hanji and other Commanders would make, the choice that will take Erwin back (and it's so clear that this is what Levi wants). But at the very end, Levi changes his mind, not out of any logical reason, or rational thought. He decides to let his friend rest because it'd be the best choice for Erwin and Erwin alone (or at least, in Levi's understanding of him).

Last but not least, Erwin's death affected Levi terribly. I usually dislike "revenge arc", but his was so well built and motivated that I appreciated it. His promise is the only fuel left to Levi to moves forward. It's a sad and heartbreaking end, but it puts emphasis on the importance of his relationship with Erwin.

Re-watching AoT gives you the possibility to focus on its nuances; it's a complex story and for people like me (not usually interested in the romance, but in the most dynamic and action side) it's easy to miss some details.

I personally like the absence of huge romantic sub-plot. I like how the relationships between the characters are described trough little details, ways of talking to each other, choices that can be read as ambiguous at some times. Or, this is true for the "adults", the 104th are kids and mostly act like kids "repressed" by their military role and the cruel circumstances of their world.

When it comes to Hanji, Miche, Moblit, Levi, Erwin, it's different. They are soldiers and put duty beyond their personal feelings. I love how their relationships are built. And I do consider Erwin and Levi relationship one of the strongest in AoT, and one of the most healthy too. Forgetting the hcs, the theories, or even what VAs, animators etc said, I think that it's undeniable the depth of their bond, and the fact that it is - at least - platonic love. To me it's clear as the sky that Levi loved Erwin (not necessarily in a sexual way) and it's clear that he was reciprocated, in a more subtle way because Erwin is a character literally broken by his guilt, split between his selfish side and his selfless one.

The rest of it is mostly hc, though some theories really are plausible and I love the fanon exploration of them trough fics and fanarts.

This long post just because I wanted to express what to me it's a fact and not a theory, that in the complex and not so easy identification and classification of what a relationship between two humans is, that between Erwin and Levi falls in the large range of "Love". And not the love and affection one usually has for a dear friend. It's deeper, it's familiar. It's the bond you have with someone you want to become family with. (Just to mention, Mikasa's "you're family" it's so powerful to me, it's a good choice of words that Eren misunderstood imo). This is why I don't feel the need (tough I like the fun, absolutely) of searching proofs and making up scenarios of a love story that is just there. I don't need Isayama to state that Levi and Erwin would have gotten married, circumstances permitting. They already have a strong, dedicated and wholesome bond that accompanied Erwin to his last, painful years and gave him peace at the very end; and complimentary, the same bond gave Levi hope and aim when he needed it and – sadly – affected him so badly that he lived so many years in grief (maybe all his remaining years). Tell me this is not what a loving relationship/marriage looks like.

Thank you so much for sharing this Anon ♡  There’s honestly very little I can add to this. You’ve expressed eloquently why Erwin and Levi’s relationship is so important and so compelling. Regardless of shipping, their relationship, and the bond of  trust they share, is pivotal to the story, particularly from the Uprising Arc onwards.

One of the things I’ve always loved about SnK, which you’ve touched on here, is that Isayama is actually very good at writing compelling, and compellingly complex, adult relationships. Like you said, we don’t need any other “proof” of the depth of Erwin and Levi’s relationship, it’s all there in black and white in the manga. The supplementary materials, the guidebooks, the interviews, the Smartpass stories all add colour but they don’t change the fundamental nature of their relationship. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this to me is what a deeply committed adult relationship looks like.  It needs no more elaboration.

i have to revamp their designs and give them names, but i’ll list what/who they are rn from oldest to newest with brief descriptions priest: his name was originally fernando as a joke but i never really liked it/it never quite fit, i also made him back in like 2019; he's like kinda a cult leader who made a deal with the devil but he originally wasn't like that (think villain and violent, infant and innocent vibes). he's mostly nonchalant, but when he's around the person he loves (which is an angel in disguise as a detective trying to figure out who tf is doing all these fucked up sacrifices cause there's a little too much souls missing in heaven rn), he goes absolutely BONKERS, all teethy-smiles and giddy. he's still batshit insane though since the deal and his background made his head all fucked up lol minotaur: khristopher (yeah i'm also not into his name it's getting changed LMAO), made in 2021; he's a rancher, very hostile and antisocial so he kinda lives very isolated away from people, so yk that already makes him desperate for any sort of romantic affections. kinda has his moments of flirtiness, but it comes off as sleazy. he's rarely ever seen in public unless he's selling his farm produce in the farmer's market every sunday, but he gets some good sales in since his juice products are pretty popular. werewolf 1: sung-jae yeon (his name is being kept), also made in 2021; he's a singer/actor that got turned into a werewolf (which he hides surprisingly well as a famous person) and though he may seem to be kind, he's actually a big egotistical asshole that does whatever he wants when he wants because of the amount of fame and wealth he has. he's also kinda goofy in the way rafayel is from love and deepspace is iykwm siren/merman: pollux agineus (his name is also being kept), also made in 2021; he's a professional surfer who's seemingly the shyest and gets flustered so easily around the one he loves BUT THAT SHITS ACTUALLY A FACADE he's so mindlessly possessive that he'll literally try to cannibalize his love cause he thinks that's normal to do (in his species), and his short temper isn't something to mess with either. he's a mean mf fr

werewolf 2: this guy i had a dream about back in late 2021 after those three above and he was originally a viking werewolf, but i meshed him into sung-jae's lore and he became the one that turned him into a werewolf (on accident). never gave him a name but he's a feral werewolf (born one), meaning that he's way bigger and tougher than sung-jae's werewolf form. there's not much about him other than him being stoic and gruff, saying barely saying anything because he also doesn't know how to speak any human language, so you're basically constantly being slung onto his shoulder and doing whatever he wants you to do.

Hey liv! How is going? Recently I had been thinking about percolate and your answers to why Erwin never pursued rookie. I started reading percolate in 2021, soon after I turned 23 and even I had the same thought that Erwin should’ve acted on rookie, and didn’t quite understand your reasoning about him being a mentor figure to her and him not wanting to take advantage of that. And honestly now, at 25 I completely understand and see that it’s crossing a line bc of how involved he was in her interview and application process. Like It could be seen as slimy if Erwin had in fact pursued her or tried something. It may not be that deep, and maybe I’m reading too much into it, but now that my brain is fully cooked I feel like I get it. Like student/relationship can be great to read about, but that wasn’t Erwin lol

the fact that you grew and learned and lived a bit and eventually came back to this little story i wrote and were able to understand it from a different perspective that only years can give you is making me strangely emotional omg??

i think that there is a "right" way that rookie and erwin could have worked out, because i don't think that there's anything any more fundamentally wrong with his relationship to her than there is with her relationship to levi. but i think that for how i personally pictured (and strived to write) erwin's character, it made more sense that he wouldn't try and bridge that gap to something more than friends when all of the extenuating circumstances were taken into account.

Here's to Our In-Between

Summary: A Grim Reaper named Levi Ackerman meets a mortal named Hange Zoe.

Sidenote: This ask was sent last July 2021... so if you manage to read this, Anon, I hope you're still in love with the fandom (and I am so, so sorry for being late, but writing emotional fics like this one do take time)

For Levi, souls are mere dead baggage for his job. He collects them as they come and go. He's a grim reaper, for heaven's sake, so he's merely doing his job as clinically as possible. None of that melancholic angel-like voice guiding them in the afterlife, nor of the haunting chants of him ferrying the departed to peaceful paradise. Saving souls mean nothing to him. No one else ever remembers the past, anyway, so bother?

One thing that baffles him, though, is Hange Zoe's presence. He watches her like a hawk from a distance, curious and intrigued at her peculiarity. Humans can be interesting once in a while, especially when they don't fear death or being forgotten. She's graduating with her college degree, sure, but for a student, she sure does meditate a lot on mortality, philosophizing about it in front of her friends in cafes and libraries, and Levi can't help but listen and follow around, invisible.

Then the inevitable happens.

She trips right in the middle of the street, and a speeding car honks at her, lights blaring. Hange closes her eyes and doesn't move, thinks her end has finally come.

(It's not her turn to die yet, Levi is aware of it, and he'll make sure that doesn't happen today.)

So he appears to her for the first time, in flesh and blood, like a god-turned-mortal, pulling her back to the safety of the sidewalk. A mishap, perhaps---or is it fate? Levi can't tell how someone like Hange can stir old feelings inside him.

The crowd is hushed when he doesn't let go of her hand and Levi knows he's become human like the rest of them.

"Thank you, I--" Hange turns around to face her savior and they're both appalled when the strange man starts tearing up without reason. Levi pulls a hand to his face and feels the wetness in his cheeks.

After composing herself, Hange can only laugh at her lifesaver. "Am I that gorgeous?"

He bites his lip and hates to admit anything but the truth: all the memories of her in his previous life are flashing right before his very eyes.

Earth feels nothing like heaven, or even hell. Not that there's anything to look forward to on earth, anyway.

Unlike Levi, Hange doesn’t remember anything about her past. Not the rain nor the river. In fact, Hange doesn’t remember jumping into the rapids with a dead body to avoid captivity. At least, not in this world. There are no flashbacks in her mind when the stranger mentions these so-called memories.

"Must have triggered the recollection when I became human after the incident," he's speaking his mind, and Hange is appalled.

"Right..." she nods, not following at all.

"I'm not crazy, I promise," the stranger named Levi leans towards her, careful not overstep his boundaries, as they sit across each other in a café near her lab.

"Why are you telling me this?"

"You saved my life," he says again, his voice very much human, "I owe you everything."

This person sitting across her doesn't have much to say anymore, except that he’s an old friend, a comrade from the past that she fought alongside with, but Hange has never entered the military. Not in this life, no. Neither does she dream of enlisting in it. Hange's world comprises of lab experiments and safety goggles, of test trials and meticulous methodologies.

It's only been an hour since she first met him. Hange's had an inkling that this could be a trick, a scam, but from the way he sounds so sincere and desperate, Hange might as well fall for it. "Mister... Ackerman, right?"

"You can call me Levi."

"What was I to you?"

"Someone..." He bites his lip, tries to think of the best thing to say. "special."

She looks up to the dark skies as if searching for something. Some sign or meaning behind this. "Levi," she says his name as if it would bring back something from what she's supposed to know, but nothing. “So, what else do you remember? About me?"

The man says in a heartbeat: "Everything."

He promises to fill her in with the details, perhaps try to sketch a portrait of their lives from the world he knew. Hange believes in the afterlife, and even though she's not religious, she's spiritual enough to know that there are ways for people to reencounter their lovers in another life. She asks him questions about grim reapers and souls, and Levi tries to think of Hange in their past life and sighs at how cruel and beautiful the world can be.

Settling into the human world (again) can be quite daunting at first, but Levi knows there's a limit to how long he can take a break from being a grim reaper. His heart breaks when he finds out that he only has another day until he loses his mortality once more.

"When you finally leave, I promise I'll be there to say goodbye," Hange tells him, holding out her pinky finger for him to curl his own against.

And indeed she does.

He meets Hange outside her house on the last day, says he has one last thing to do before he goes away. There's a somber look in her eye once she comes out of her door.

"I wish there was a way for me to see who I was in your lifetime," Hange confesses to him. Levi might have lived centuries as a grim reaper, but in reality, immortality brings him fear.

"There is one way, actually," he tells her. "A reaper's kiss will allow a person to remember their past life."

"Why didn't you say so right away?" Hange grabs his collar in her first, half angry and annoyed.

He doesn't dare tell her that he's afraid to know who he was to Hange in her past life. It was too much of a burden for anyone to bear, to see how tragic their previous lives were. Levi hopes this was the right choice. That in the case Hange would choose to see her past, he hopes that she'll only remember the happy times.

"Well then, Levi Ackerman..." Hange Zoe's voice is close to a whisper, almost a plead. "Will you kiss me?"

Slowly, he pulls her close to him and kisses her in the dark.

The memories instantly flood into her head, of saving Levi, of tending to his injuries, of sacrificing herself. Hange finds herself laughing with Levi as well as with other people--comrades, friends, maybe?--and of crying with the younger soldiers. It's full of heartache but it's also brimming with determination and comfort, of selflessness and love.

When he pulls away from the kiss, there's only silence at first. The sky has gone dark with the late-night hour. And this time, Hange is crying. "What did I just see? What was that all about?"

He kisses her once more on the forehead for good measure. "Our past life."

Levi prays that in their next life, the wait will be short and the meeting shall be long.

‘Heart of Stone’ Trailer: Gal Gadot, Jamie Dornan and Alia Bhatt Star in Action-Packed Netflix Movie

Gal Gadot is going from superhero to super spy in the action-packed first trailer for the international espionage thriller “Heart of Stone.”

Gadot was joined by co-stars Jamie Dornan and Alia Bhatt at Netflix’s Tudum fan festival in São Paulo, Brazil, where the trio debuted the film’s first trailer. The footage features heart-stopping stunts, like Gadot’s Rachel Stone — an intelligence operative for a shadowy global peacekeeping agency — skydiving from a death-defying height.

Stone’s steely demeanor and adrenaline-junkie habits are explained as her boss (Sophie Okonedo) warns, “You know what you signed up for. No friends, no relationships… What we do is too important. When governments fail, the only thing left is the Charter.”

Stone and Dornan’s Parker are among the organization’s highly-trained agents, who have no political leanings or national allegiances and are described as “working together to keep peace in a turbulent world.”

But when hacker Keya Dhawan (Bhatt, as the Bollywood A-lister stars in her first major Hollywood movie) steals the agency’s most valuable – and dangerous – weapon (a technological core that “gives the Charter its power,” it’s “heart,” if you will), Stone sets off on an epic, globe-trotting adventure to save the day and clear her name.

“Heart or no heart, I’m coming for you,” Gadot snarls into a cell phone as her own warning to Bhatt.

Directed by Tom Harper from a script by Greg Rucka and Allison Schroeder, the intense footage also features major action set pieces including a motorcycle chase through the Alps and cars speeding through the streets of Lisbon. Gadot is also seen flying through the air twice — first, paragliding off a snowy embankment and later, doing some extreme skydiving.

“Chance of success just plummeted,” a Charter agent (played by Matthias Schweighöfer) cautions while Stone performs the dangerous maneuver. “Only because you have no imagination,” she shoots back, as she manages to tumble onto her target.

In addition to bringing her action star skills (refined in “Wonder Woman,” and soon to return to the “Fast and Furious” franchise) to the table, Gadot also produced the film under her Pilot Wave banner with her producing partner and husband Jaron Varsano. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger are also billed as producers, along with Mockingbird’s Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn. Patty Whitcher, Harper and Rucka serve as executive producers.

“Heart of Stone” begins streaming on August 11.

Netflix nabbed worldwide rights to the project in 2021, marking another partnership between the streamer and Skydance, after teaming for “The Old Guard” with Charlize Theron, Ryan Reynolds’ “6 Underground” and “The Adam Project,” directed by Shawn Levy. Gadot and Netflix have their own strong ties, with the superstar set to appear in two sequels to “Red Notice,” as the 2021 action comedy is one of the streamer’s most-watched movies of all time.

Evil Dead Rise: Mommy's with the Maggots Now (Comission for WeirdKev27)

Hail to the king baby! It's halloween, it's this blog and that mean's it's time for me to pull out my volume of the Necronimcon Demento and review another chapter of the evil dead.

So for those new here

I'm Jake, I review stuff and things, and two years ago I did an evil dead retrospective, covering all 4 films. From that stupid bitch scotty to ash laughing madly, to the film of a thousand catchphrases to that one that had Jane Levy, some good gore and little else, it was a fun ride.

So naturally with a new evil dead film out, it's only natural that I returned to review the latest film in the franchise: Evil Dead Rise. It's also a special review as it's my belated reviewversry with friend of the blog and over time of the me, WeirdKev27.

Kevin was my first client and the one who made me able to make a living doing this, and while he has zero interest in ever seeing Evil Dead Rise, he's more an horror-action and horror-comedy kind of guy, this gives him a chance to see what it has. Plus really after covering the last 4 even if he didn't agree to sponsor it, I'd be doing this anyway as I both love this film and hate not having the complete set. It's thanks to kev I have all I do now, so thanks man.

Evil Dead Rise is the franchises second attempt at a soft reboot after Evil Dead 2013. The plan after that one was to do two sequels: Evil Dead 2, which would follow Mia, Jane Levy's final girl from the requel and the only character who wasn't huffing paint thinner the whole film, and Army of Darkness 2. This ended up falling through, with Alvarez moving on to other projects and AOD2 being retooled into Ash Vs the Evil Dead, a three season tv series on stars that sadly got cancelled but from all accounts fucking rocked and I definitely want to cover at some point.

From there Ash's story was seemingly done on screen. While Dynamite will likely publish army of darkness comics till the end of time, Bruce Campbell had decided he was aging out of the part and wanted to pass the chainsaw on. That said while Campbell was seemingly done playing Ashy Slashy, he wasn't done with the franchise, staying on as a producer alongside Sam Rami and Robert Tapert. Rami and Campbell were done MAKING the films, but still wanted the franchise to live on.

So in 2019 a new film got the greenlight, with Rami handpicking rookie director Lee Cronin for the part, having impressed rami while working on the short lived quibi series 50 States of Fright. Cronin easily took to the cast and once filming COULD kick off in 2021, he hit the ground running. The result is a fresh take on the franchise that was so well done that WBD decided it was too good to just pop on streaming and much like Blue Beetle, bumped it up to theaters. The result was a 19 million dollar film.. scoring nearly 150 million in the box office, a huge success that , unlike most films only GREW it's audience as the weeks went on, always a great sign.

As a result the franchise's future seems secure, with Cronin not only already having 4 ideas for a sequel, which i'll get to later, but the results were so Groovy Bruce decided he wasn't finished yet, meaning an ash film is also in the cards.

So the question is how groovy is this film and how does the franchise fair without it's iconic cabin setting or iconic catchphrase spewing chainsaw man? The answers to all of this is under the cut. So turn the page, wash your hands, and prepare for 1717 Gallons of Bloodshed as I look at Evil Dead Rise.

Evil Dead Rise starts off a day after the main plot, with three 20 somethings having gone to a cabin in the woods woooooooooooooo not realizing what franchise their in. They are Jessica, Teresa, Jessica's cousin and Caleb, Jessica's douchey boyfriend. Caleb annoys Teresa with a drone, nearly clipping her with it and mansplaning after she says it nearly clipped her head off that it would've ground her face up instead.

Teresa proves to be just as obnoxious as Caleb, berating Jessica for leaving her alone with him, fair.. but then also being mad at her for being sick, laid up in bed and thus unable to give her the keys.

Thankfully this is an evil dead movie so Jessica quickly ends our suffering as she wants to swallow souls, taking off Teressa's scalp in a gory, horrifying and awesome practical effect before putting the drone to her own face and jumping into the lake. Caleb proves he's both not a COMPLETE asshole but still a complete idiot by diving in after her and we get the films awesome opening shot: Jessica rising from the lake, drenched in water and blood as the title rises behind her.

While I do like that TITLE CARRRD and scalping, overall i'm not a big fan of this opening. While it's well shot like the rest of the film, it's too short to really make me care and feels like it was thrown in there because the main plot ran a tad short and was too tightly paced to add to. It's a how we got here sort of thing that dosen't really work and feels like i'ts just there so we can have a sequel.. depsite the film having MULTIPLE other valuable sequel hooks dangling around. It's unnecessary in a film that otherwise really dosen't DO unnecessary. It also feels tonally off, feeling like a 2000's era "Kill the douchebags" sort of film than the tightly paced well characterized film we get after.

Thankfully we soon meet our actual protagnist, Beth. Beth, played by Australian Actor Alyssa Sulivan, gets a great introduction that does a lot of nice exposition without actually saying any: we quickly find out from her being sick in a stall and having some douche she works with who can't do his job himself and just let her go to the bathroom for five minutes knock on it that sh'es a roadie, her hiding it tells us she's pregnant and doesn't want anyone else to know, and Suilivan's awesome facial acting tells us she has no idea how to process this.

We soon cut to LA in a high rise, a setting change I utterly love. Before this most evil dead works were in a rural setting: a cabin in the woods for the first, second and fourth films, artuhrian times for the third, and some small towns for ash vs the evil dead. We haven't seen the deadites in an urban setting before this and LA was a great set.

The choice of setting within is also great: an old crumbling high rise in the middle of a busy city no one would give two shits about or really investigate in the middle of the night. It keeps the isolation of the cabin but puts a new spin on it that allows for new set pieces.

The main one of these is Ellie's Apartment. Ellie is played by the stunning and talented Alyssa Sutherland, previously known for Vikings, which I haven't seen. Sutherland is the easy breakout of the film, the center of most of it's marketing and the most terrifying part about it... eventually.

Part of that terror is we see her first as a fun, responsible mom and tattoo artist dealing with three children, all creatives themselves in some way: Bridget (Gabrille Echoles) is an activist, her brother Danny (Morgan Davies) is a dj and their young sister Cassie cuts up her dolls to create staves to body check her sister with.

This family, which doesn't have a last name, is the core of the film and the first 20 minutes are really just setting them up as people: Beth is a tad snarky but clearly loves her kids and is tough but fair with them, Bridget is sarcastic to just about everyone but her aunt, Danny is a bit of a reckless fuckwit but has a good heart, more on the former later, and Cassie is a sweetie pie. Their not super deep characterizations, but the talented actors give them a lot of character simply by action, and one of the films best asset is how great these people are at facial acting.

Beth flies in and after scaring the shit out of Ellie. The two actresses have great chemistry and you can feel the tension as the two clearly haven't talked.. and Beth missed a lot as Ellie's ex husband abandoned the family and this high rise is condemned, with the family only having a month. So naturally Ellie isn't that excited to see Beth, both for Beth dodging her calls, despite getting her messages, and showing up at the worst possible time.

That said the film also does a really good job with the sibling dynamic: like me with my own brother Ellie may be annoyed with Beth.. but she's there for her, getting this visit wasn't just out of the blue and her sister really needs her and waits till the kids have left to pick up pizza to ask, but does so gently yet firmly. These characters feel like family and building up this empathy and character is key to everything being as horrifying as it is. It's something many horror films, including this very film in it's opening and the previous film fail to grasp: just because

Dosen't mean we should WANT them too. It's fine to throw in a few assholes to kill so not EVERY death is a downer, depending on the film, but when you can't empathize with most of your cast it makes the wait for the bloodshed tedious. It's why the previous film REALLY didn't work for me: outside of mia NONE of these idiots were likeable and as such having to spend a film with them being stupid and waiting for them to die while the only likeable one was turned into a deadite wasn't fun. Here by making everyone we encounter likeable, grounded, and interesting.. it makes the horrifying slaughter we're about to witness that much more tragic. It makes us WANT these characters not to be dead by dawn.

Anyways we're soon reminded this is LA as we get an EARTHQUAKKKEEEE, with the bathroom set our sisters are in having been rigged to shake really well. The kids thankfulyl weren't driving at the time and instead are trying to take the pizza back up when it hits. They drop it, but do live.

Sadly for them and everyone else on their floor Danny suffers from a terminal case of dumbass and upon seeing a giant crack in the ground leading to a mysterious old bank vault just HAS to investigate in the dark. He finds some old records, which.. fair enough, it's some neat historical stuff, could be fun to paly with soundwise and could help them fincally. Him taking stuff romt he hole is mildly stupid.. but I get it and I probably would. What I wouldn't do is upon finding a room guarded by a bunch of hanging crucafixes and seeing a book with teeth and bound in human flesh, take it with me. And I mean teeth as this Necronomicon has a nasty but awesome set of chompers. I praise the set design here on this, it's iconic as the original, still recognizable as being it's sibling, but the teeth give it it's own flair.

Anyways the kids get back to the apartment and Danny decides the best thing he can do during a dark night with quakes a poppin.. is to pry open his new book. Which granted is what i'd do, but my recent book is about a trans woman's first year post transition and is damn good...

Highly recommend it and it's sequel, which I got first. Also guarnateed not to summon the evil dead.. which I understand is a dealbreaker for some of you. Good news i'm pretty sure that manga about Joker raising a baby batman does, so have at it if that's what your after.

Sadly Danny is not taking my book recommendations and opens the things finding a bunch of spooky pictures and... being genuinely horrified. He's a LITTLE fascinated but it's clear his reaction is "shit this thing isn't good is it. Not hleped is that when he pricks his finger on the books mighty jaws, it drinks some blood Audrey II styles. Bridget sees this and has the right reaction.

Or rather chuck it back down the hole they got it from. Danny can't because their mom won't let them out of the apartment after the quake which is fair.. what's less fair is that he dosen't wrap the book in something or hide it. Keep it from trying to nible on some face. You have 4 other people in the house Dan be considerate!

That said Dan still takes the darwin award winning step of playing the wax records he got. NOw on paper Danny being this dumb shoudln't work.. but in practice Rise does an excellent job showing why Danny would be like this: we've seen he's an audophile, that he's reckless as he went down a crevice in an earthquake, and that he's curious to a fault, willing to take the book in a first place. So he's being stupid.. but it's in a way where it's a character flaw and not just bad writing.

It also helps that while playing the records is risky.. you can kinda see why. He found a creepy vampiric book in the basement. He probably gets he might not be able to just chuck it in a hole and have it not come back or have already infected them or something. it didn't, but he can't know that. So knowing what the FUCK this thing is might be a good idea.

As it turns out we get some exposition from a preist long ago: he found the book and proposed to his fellow preists to explore it. His Fellow preists didn't want to die today and loudly decired it as blasphemous.

So he decided to take it and study it because that's never gone horribly wrong and lead to about a dozen deaths in this franchise, along with cameo Bruce Campbell and some other guy. He also decides to read it and to Danny's credit, he tries to stop the record there... only for it to keep playing. The Evil Dead have come baby.

Before we move on I need to talk about the danny thing a bit more, mostly because not only was this whole inciting incident well done, being rooted in character stupidity instead of just bad writing.. but it also feels like a direct response to the last film. For those who either haven't seen it, you blessed people you, or need a refresher, in Evil Dead 2013 the Necronomicon was found in a basement full of rotting corpses and next to a shot gun. it was packed in a garbage back, covered with barb wire, and had bright red writing implicitly from ash telling you NOT TO FUCKING READ IT OUTLOUD.

So enter Eric, full time teacher part time fuckwit who hears about the corpses, sees all of this and not only cuts the barbed wire but READS THE BOOK.

So it's nice the followup decided to use the same plot device.. but actually use it instead of making a character brain dead.

So with that the evil dead has risen and the nightmare time has arrived. And the first victim of the Evil Dead is Ellie, whose experincing some ELEVATED horror while taking the elevated when some cables grab her.

The sequence is quick horrifying and also has her trying in vain to fight off the possesion before the evil dead kills her, and she returns as a deadite.. and as the real breakout of the piece. While Beth is the lead and Lily Sullivan does greath, it's Sutherland whose the main attraction.. and not just because a good half of the audience's reactoin to Deadite Ellie was

Which isn't me, but I entirely get. It's also intresting to have a horror film where the deadite is the real hammy star instead of our hero. Sutherland is iconic in this roll, from the creepy smiles to how unsettling she plays possesed elly: the pitched down voice HELPS.. but it's the unceasing smile, creepy grins and offputting behavior that make Deadite Elly so awesome and so electric to watch. There's good reason her possesion was spoiled int he marketing: She's the center of this film's horror. She's not the only deadite, we'll get a few more, but she's the main threat, the main focus and the main thing fucking with our heroes heads, starting with the brilliant egg sequence where Cronin and Sutherland make simply making eggs fucking unerving.

She's also the main source of black comedy in the film, from calling her children titty sucking parasites, to her game of eeny meeny miney you, to later making her daughter repeat the eyeball gag from 2, her haminess is well played: enough to keep the film from getting TOO bleak but not so overplayed it takes you out of how horrifying thigns are.

Deadite ellie is the biggest symbol of the films tone: Cronin keeps it pitch black like the requel, but unlike that film Cronin realizes that too MUCH bleakness overrides everything else. But giving us characters to root for and want to live through the night and some dark humor, it helps contrast the utterly bleak situation. It gives us something to go what the fuck at with the humor and something to cling on to. I hate that I keep making this review "Whyt his one works and why the remake didn't" as Fede Alvarez seems like a genuinely nice person. This film is good on it's own, not just because I like it more than the other... but it's also impossible to not bring up the two as they tried to do the same thing: bring back the franchise without ash, without contiuing the original story. I don't WANT to keep using the 2013 film as a punching bag... but it's hard not to when this feels like the better version of it, making an evil dead that's closer to straight horror.. but still gets what the franchise is. It keeps the frantic pacing of 2, it just makes it less of an over the top comedy and more an over the top nightmare our heroes can't escape. it's frantic out of urgency rather than out of throwing weird, hilaroius or horrifying shit at y ou constantly. Well except the last part.

Anyways at first everyone just assumes Deadite elly is sick, and they turn to their neighbors, Gabriel (Jayden Daniels) and his father Mr. Fonda (Mick Michelson). Gabe is a kind man implied to have a thing for elly while his father is very mildly crotchety but a kind cat owner , both helping: Gabe tries to treat Elly while his pop pop tries to figure out HOW to get her to help. As it did with the bridge, the Evil has taken out the stairs and already trashed the elvator, leaving a fire escape through a conedemed apartment as thier only escape.

So while gabe and his dad plan to run through, everyone else is left with Elly. We also get a really nice use of modren tech: in most films they usually have to do the "cellphones out" dance, which I understand but got old. Here... what we know about the evil dead from other films provides a nice way... they get no signal.. because it can control that because it can control anything in it's radius. If it can posses a moose head working the wifi shoudln't be that hard.And it thus has Ellie, trapped inside her deadite counterprat clal her sister for help before convulsing.... and whne put inj a tub crawwling out of it

Mayhem ensues as the family has to ward off Deadite Ellie, and we get a lot of nice iconic bits of violence: Ellie's now iconic line of "mommy's with the maggots now", going "eeneie meanie miney you" and using a CHEESE GRATER on her daughter while attacking her in the kitchen. Which while Cronin overhyped it before release, it's a nasty wound but in a film caked in blood, it's still a very creative gore moment in a film packed with them. The gallons of blood I listed before the cut were how many it actually took to make this film. It's another way the film works: it keeps the over the top nature of the series, it just emphasises the horror more, a way to keep the series fredsh but not ignore what made it good.

Our heroes are barely able to lock Ellie out and we get one of the best sequence sin the film: our heroes look in the peep hole.. and we see bits and pieces as Ellie masacres Mr. Fonda, gabriel and two local teens I didn't mention because they literally just hit on Bridget once and then die horribly here. Even Mr. F having a boomstick dosne't save him. And it's stuff like this that works: the high rise on paper is safter, less isolated... but in practice our heroes are nwo trapped in a cramped space, no way out with a bloodthirsty monster wearing their loved one's face. It's a brilliant take.

Naturally as is Evil Dead tradition, the group falls apart a bit: Danny is in tears taking the blame for this and it's again why I like him: he may be stupid.. but while eric just kinda hid we see the toll casuing this put on Danny. Bridget rips him apart for it and normally you'd think one would go outside and die.. but in a nice twist on the old formula Beth stops them: Danny MAY of caused this but they CANNOT turn on each other. It's what's out there that they need to fight.

Speaking of which Deadite Ellie prays on her youngest, gaslighting cassie by pretending to be "all better now"

Though i'll give them points for style. This force Beth and Danny to save her.. and thus leaving them open for Bridget as in a horrifying sequence we see the dead slowly flow thorugh her before she startsb leading black blood out her nose... and becomes the dead.

Another horrifying scuffle insues with her targeting danny and barfing blood on him and nearly killing him before cassie FUCKING IMPALES HER. God damn kid.

They tie bridget up in a sack and Beth finally gets Danny to spill about the book and comes up with a plan: since playing the record got them into this, playing the record will get them out of this.

It's a desperation move.. but like Danny's earlier shenanigans that lead to this blood party.. it makes some sense: they can't read the book, and frankly trying to may just make MORE deadites, and if the guy actually survived long enough to make a third album, it means they MIGHT have a way out. We also get a nice ash style montage of her getting the DJ equipment to work as at this point the power is out. It also nicely makes her music career into a hell of a chekovs gun.

Tragically.. they don't. HIs album simply outlines the horrors idiot priest man faced, what he's lost and how only complete and total dismemberment works. Granted we knew from the intro they probably wouldn't' make it but by this point, the film's got us too invested to care. I still dont' LIKE the intro making it clear this doesn't work from the get go, but at least the films well paced enough to compensate.

Things then get somehow worse as Bridget rises and stabs danny to death, coughing up blood and everything. It's brutal as it is amazingly designed. He does manage to fire her out of the impartment... with fire, while Ellie sneaks in through the vents, something set up by the old man's lost cast earlier.

Ellie attacks Beth and in a VERY unerving moment detects she has a baby inside her, mocks her as deadites do then tries to rip it out.

But before she can get that fetus, kill that feetus and before I can go to hell for that joke, Bridget saves her. And props to Gabrille Echoles for her excellent child acting, an alex vincent level performance.

With our party down to 2 1/3, our heroes ventur eotuside and now EVERYONE'S a deadite. Highlights include Mr Fonda grabbing Ellie's leg as she grabs his boomstick

And my favorite bit.. the two deadite children hovering over a seemingly prone deadite ellie, seemingly crying for thie rmom.. before it turns into dark.. piercing laughter. It's one of the most effective scares in the film and all the deaddites joining in is just chilling. It's a scaled back but effective version of the entire cabin laughing from evil Dead 2

The final girls hide in the elevator as what's left of their family fuses into The Marauder, our final deadite for the evening and a grotesque combination of their family, a grim reminder of what's happened and just a gross thing to look at. As is standard for this film, it's awesome and I love it.

SPeaking of awesome and I love it we then get another destined to be iconic bit: the elevator fills with BLOOD. What's more impressive is they got the scene in one: had they failed they would've had to clean up and start again, which given this scene involves a GIANT pool of pracitcal blood and leaves both characters drenched in it for the rest of the film, is a LOT to as and is a LOT of moving parts to nail on your first try. But they did and the result is a horrifying sequence as the elevator fills, our heroines barely survive..a nd then get tosse dinto the parking garage drenched.

The good news: now they can escape. The bad news is Deadites love final boss fights, so The Marauder is there to oand stalking them. The final fight is a tense sequence as Elly ducks it but thankfully noticces some landscaping equipment. You know what that means... CHAINSAW BLOOD MOTHERFUCKERS

So Elly takeas a fucking chainsaw to it, which gives her an edge, and later uses her fucking boom stick and tells it to "come get some". I like these little nods, obvious enough to notice btu not distracting enough if you haven't seen the other films.

What finally does it in is fucking aawesome though: a goddamn woodchipper. look is a woodchipper being here convient? yes. is the fact the deadites only sent one convient? yes. is Ellie putting a deadite through a goodamn woodchipper with her niece and now adopted daughter turning it on fucking glorious and goryious?

It's a great finale and with that Ellie, her unborn child and her niece head off into the sunset.. while our opening deadite comes into being.

Evil Dead Rise is a glorious new chapter in the franchise: still very much evil dead, but with a darker and somehow even bloodier spin on things. It's a worhty sucessor and very worthy of being the highest grossing film in the franchise, and with that acolade a sequel is hopefully inevitble.

LIke I said Cronin had four ideas, all of them brillian 1. Returning to the Cabin: While admitely I dont' care about those characters, a new cabin in the woods would be neat. This is my least faviorite as the NEXT one.. but I woudln't mind it eventually. 2. Focusing on Ellie: Seeing where she goes next, which I badly want. 3. A prequeL: focusing on the preist. another solid idea. And my faviorite 4. The cleanup crew: returning to the high rise to ask "how the hell would people react to the leftovers of the carnage we just saw".

their all great and with Bruce wanting to return now after this entry, the future is bright and this will likely not be the last time we read from the book of the dead. But it was a great return of it and I can't wait to read the next chapter. Until then hail to the king baby.. and thanks for reading

My judgment is very fair (as it should be) because I am a media practioner. I don't want to disappoint my instructor 😞.

I have occuring dilemma regarding my life chooses and struggling to make a right choice. As you can read, I'm the negative type of person. Probably because I'm a Capricorn ♑? IDK.

"Dude..." Ace whispered to Deuce. "Everyone's looking at us really weirdly."

"Watcha lookin' at, huh?!" Epel sneered, sizing up a Octavinelle student.

"U-uh, nothing! Not you, of course!" They said in a rush. "Not that you're not worth looking at just uh-"

"Really now?" Epel seethed.

"Epel, let it go," Jack said, sighing. "C'mon."

"It is highly unprofessional of you to start a fight with another student!" Sebek yelled over at Epel.

"I'll show you professional when I shove my foot up your as-"

"Epel!" Jack pulled back the boy by his collar. "Sebek, disregard him."

The Diasomnia student scoffed. "Such a small threat wouldn't phase me. I am Waka-sama's personal guard, after all."

"I don't think they're looking at us..." Deuce whispered back, looking at the students staring.

In the middle of the group was Yuu, with Grim perched on their shoulder. The prefect was chewing on some jerky that they had on them, occasionally giving a piece to Grim.

"...I think they're looking at Yuu." Deuce completed his sentence.

"Woah, you're actually being smart for once?!" Ace exclaimed on an intentionally loud volume.

"It's not like you're much better, Ace." Yuu smirked, handing Grim a piece of jerky. "You're an idiot. But you're one of my idiots, so don't worry, heh."

Ace blushed a little before turning around and huffing. "Where are we going anyway?"

"I would like to know that as well! I can not slack off on my duty to protect Waka-sama! I should be back soon!" Sebek agreed.

"Oh just down to Sam's! I need some stuff and I've been saving tokens for weeks." Yuu replied. "And why do I feel so many eyes on me? Like this is creepy."

Grim looked up from his piece of jerky around at the people Yuu seemed to be talking about. "I dunno... Hey! Why are you starin' at us?!"

"U-uh... Nothing, nevermind." The called-out student stammered.

"It's alright, don't mind Grim." Yuu motioned for the student to come over with their hands. "C'mon."

Nervously, the student shuffled their way over to Yuu and the other first-years.

"Well?"

"Uhm... see... you're ...aquaintances? I don't know if that's the right word... but you seem to be familiar with the dorm head of both Savanahclaw and Diasomnia," They said, staring at the floor. "And no one's really ever talked with either so much as once, so you're kind of a... celebrity, I suppose."

"Me, a celebrity? Hah!" Yuu laughed. "I mean it is true that I'm friends with Leona and Tsunotarou, but surely more than I have talked to them."

"I wouldn't be too sure, Yuu." Jack nudged them.

"Yeah... the Diasomnia dormleader is kind of... scary."

"How dare you call Waka-sama scary!" Sebek yelled.

"Sebek, calm down. I don't think Tsunotarou minds." Yuu sighs. "You can go now."

okay so the way we have anniversaries in the devildom, what if MC has yearly anniversaries of the day they died?

like hear me out. i like belphie now, but i also feel like it's my diavolo-given right to remind him he's a little shit on a regular basis.

the boys wake up one morning to MC laying in the foyer with a banner hung over them "HAPPY ONE YEAR SINCE I DIED DAY!" we give belphie a sparkly birthday-style hat that says "I'M AN ASSHOLE" and pin a lil badge to his chest that says "MURDERER" and he has to wear it all day.

"it's been one year since belphie murdered me mid-hug and laughed about it!"

"it's been two years since the day belphie strangled me to death and then cackled maniacally in the foyer over my corpse!"

"happy three years since he brutally slaughtered me and then dragged my body through the house like a cat showing off its kill!"

but i feel like we would have to text mammon first to warn/remind him of the holiday i don't wanna traumatize my first man.

Putting everything under cuts because I don't want to spoil for people who haven't seen it yet.

I CONTINUE TO INSIST MC BE ALLOWED TO ABSOLUTELY ENCOURAGE LEVI'S NERDING OUT. As someone somewhere on the neurodivergent spectrum, I hyperfixate and obsess and nerd out hard on shows and games too. And I know how much it hurts when your friends and family mock you or tune you out or walk away from your excitement. And I know how much it means when they listen and get excited too and even if they don't care or understand they're happy just to see you happy.

And every time in the game when Levi starts getting excited and we're forced to like, not care or shut him down? NO. NO I REFUSE.

Anyway, specifically in this episode, I will admit Simeon's entirely un-subtle escape made me cackle

It's a chilly night in the Devildom, the breeze cutting straight through your clothes. Lucifer beside you doesn't even twitch, the breeze ruffling his hair so prettily you can't help but wonder if he's using magic for that effect. Maybe it's his sin reflecting onto you, but you tense your muscles stubbornly and refuse the shiver that arcs along your spine.

He glimpses you from the corner of his eye, watching you clench your jaw against the chattering. You don't seem to realize how you're squeezing his fingers, your bare skin prickling in his grasp, the leather gloves denying you any shared heat. He could tease you, comment on your fragile human flesh, your trademark stubbornness in refusing to ask for his jacket.

Or he could unfurl his wings, stretch them wide and then let them settle in a way that just so happens to curl loosely around you and block the worst of the wind. "Oh, you don't mind, do you?" he drawls, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "The breeze feels pleasant on them." He slips his hand from your grasp long enough to pluck off his gloves and tuck them gently into his pockets, then entwines your fingers with his.

The heat from his hand seeps to your bones and up your arm. "Not at all," you reply, biting back your smile. You know he's caught your chills, and more than that, your attempt to hide them from him. "And your hands? Do you like the feel of the breeze on those, too?"

He lifts your hand in his so he can press his lips to the back of it. His gaze remains locked with yours as he lingers, the warmth of his breath on your skin erasing any memory of cold. "I prefer the feel of you."

Sometimes I think about how the other sorcerers must get BIG MAD at MC because they're the first and only human to have a pact with all seven sins, all seven lords of hell.

They should be wealthy beyond understanding, have limitless power, be everything good boys and girls fear about deals with the devil.

And instead they only call upon the pacts for like, stupid shit.

"I heard they summoned Lucifer yesterday???" "Yeah, don't get excited. They didn't want to have to call the cable company to cancel service so they asked him to do it for them."

"Yo, the new kid used their pact to call Satan here! Who died? I didn't see any wild death tolls on the news--" "I saw on Instagram they went to Barnes & Noble and then a shelter to pet cats."

"Did you see they had Beelzebub here last night? And he looked pissed." "I have a friend who works at Olive Garden. Apparently he found the limit to the unlimited salad and breadsticks."

"Was I seeing things or was Asmodeus in town? With Solomon, I assume?" "Nah, with his apprentice." "Oh, were they trying to seduce their way--" "They were trying out those new nail polish robots at Target."

"Ugh, did they summon Mammon? Why??" "Apparently they couldn't reach some of the spell components on a top shelf and didn't want to go get the step stool."

"The new kid is outside with Leviathan, and they're standing real close talking animatedly. You don't think he's scouting ahead for the Navy, do you?" "Nope, walked by them earlier. They're playing Pokemon Go."

"I'm pretty sure that's Belphegor in the lounge near the fireplace." "Yep. Apparently the new kid likes to shove their bare feet under him while he naps, says he's 'the perfect temperature'."

Dating Sting be like: (SFW)

You’re dating one of the most popular Sabertooth members, and now guild master. Expect lots of looks of jealousy from everyone when you go out together.

Because of that, Sting is hyper aware that you’re probably self conscious about it so expect soft pda- nose kisses, forehead kisses, hand grabbing, tight hugs.

He’s shit at cooking, but you’re his princess so he’s going to try. But by try, it means he ropes Minerva and rogue to help him make something worthy of you.

He’s also a goofball, so expect silly pranks often. Hell ask you to prank lector and Rogue all the time. Just go with it, it makes the man’s heart swell.

Sting often puts off his duties as guild master to go on jobs with you, or spend time with you. you’re going to have to convince him to do that paperwork somehow.

He wants cuddles. All the cuddles. Cuddle that dragon please. If you don’t he’ll start to whine. Even though You find it adorable, he low key will start to wonder if you found another mate if you’re not as affectionate as usual.

Tell him you love him. Often. Whispering it in his ear or giving him encouragement to do the thing will be the quickest way to get a smile on his face.

He’s secretly a soft boi, but he’s got a reputation to uphold in the guild as it’s master.

He knows you’re incredibly powerful and can handle yourself on jobs, but he’s so protective. If it’s not him going with you, it’ll 100% be Rogue or Yukino. You’ve argued that you’re just as capable but he wouldn’t approve any jobs until you compromised.

Rogue is absolutely your shadow. You hated it at first, feeling like you’re being baby sat by your boyfriends best friend. Until you got to know rogue. Quickly the quiet shadow dragon became your closest friend too. Plus, who can resist Frosch and the cuteness of that bean?

* When Sting first notices future s/o was during the Grand Magic Games X791. She was on Fairy Tail team A. She was really gorgeous, to which Lector teased him about staring for too long, but Sting of course denied that.

* The next round of matches found this mystery girl paired up with Minerva. Sting settled back into his chair, content to watch Minerva wipe the floor with this girl to help erase her from his mind.

* Imagine Sting and the rest of Sabertooth’s surprise when future s/o unleashes Dragon Force and proceeds to beat Minerva’s spatial magic without breaking a sweat.

BIOGRAPHY

Calliope was born third into the Wallace household of what would eventually make the family be graced by three children, two girls and one boy. The family was existent of nothing but love and respect, creating a safe and warm household. Calliope could bury herself in the many books that the household contained, even if Calliope only liked the pictures at such a young age. She would make a pillow fortress under her father's desk or read in her big sister's bed.

Calliope was always a studious child. An inquisitive nature as soon as she was able to crawl around, much to the terror of her parents. She was friendly to whomever would come across her path, making a lot of friends from a very young age, despite the warnings of her parents about stranger danger. Yet if there is anything Calliope's life would prove to her, it's that it's the ones closest to you that betray you and let you down.

At the mere age of five, the Wallace household collapsed. Giovanna's kidnapping was followed by grim atmospheres. Calliope barely saw her parents smile anymore, instead crying as they kept giving interviews and statements about wanting their daughter back. Within a year, Calliope hadn't just lost her sister, but she had to watch how two coffins were lowered into the ground, as the guilt and remorse had been too much too handle for her parents to handle, leaving behind their other two children.

Calliope and her brother ended up with their aunt and uncle, who from the get go made it clear to the two that they weren't happy with their presence, as they wouldn't be able to live their life of traveling anymore and instead taking care of two brats they never even wanted to have. Their abuse was manageable at first, since Calliope had her brother. The shouting, the evenings without dinner, the smack on the heads and backs. Never the legs and arms. The two siblings held their heads down, focusing on school work playing with dolls with each other.

Calliope was too young at that time, unaware that her sister had escaped and that her aunt and uncle had refused to take her in and was instead cast away to a godmother of theirs. This was only relied to her later on by her brother when she was older. Calliope never really had an opinion. It had been her and her brother for so long, for the most of her recollection that she had her most important person with her. That all changed when her brother decided to run away from home when she was eleven, leaving her alone with her abusers. The punishment got worse. Involuntary haircuts, locking her up in the broom closet and being terrorised during the night so that she wouldn't get any sleep.

Her anger got her through it. The anger and hatred towards her 'caretakers' for how they treated her. Towards her brother for abandoning her, towards her parents for choosing the easy way out and leave behind their son and daughter to fend for themselves and to her sister, who was the cause for all of this. She endured, trying her best not to show her aunt and uncle that they were winning, that she was terrified of confined spaces, even trying as much as to appease her uncle who was the less terrible of the two, but this only angered her aunt, who at one point even shaved off the girl's head. Luckily for Calliope, this was prior to the summer break, so she wouldn't have to face the bullying of her classmates. At the end of the summer break, Calliope made a run for it. She grabbed whatever little she had and ran from the home she had grown up in for more years than she had spent in her parental home, fleeing to the house of her best friend.

Her best friend was raised by a single teen mother, who understood the reality of an abusive home and the knowledge that should it be reported, Calliope would be put in child protective services. The woman had threatened her aunt and uncle to receive the child support payments or else she would report them, but they had laughed in her face, knowing that she wouldn't pull through on her threat. The woman didn't have enough funds to spend extra's on her daughter's friend, which Calliope didn't expect. she would focus on her school, be given clothes to wear from her friend so she wouldn't have old rags to wear, walk paper rounds until she was old enough to have actual sidejobs, earning more money for her savings account. She focused on her studies, wanting to do what her father did, forensic pathology and honour him in that way. She was fierce on the soccer field, even earning her a scholarship come graduation. It was both her will and her rage that got her where she was. Persevering against a traumatic childhood that left its traces here and there.

Moving to Kismet Harbor for college was exciting. It was a new start for the woman, far away from her abusers and a chance for a clean slate. She felt whole among her peers, thriving in her soccer team where she functioned as the keeper. With the inheritance she received upon reaching the adult age, she was able to pay off some of her student loans, managing the rest with part time jobs cleaning at people's homes. It wasn't enough to pay it all off, but at least enough to let her live a life where she didn't have to live dime after dime.

Graduating out of college, Calliope was excited by the prospect of getting a job at the coroner's office straight out of school, moving into an apartment with her college best friend. Her personal life was good, so was her work life, Calliope was the life at parties and her love life was picking up as well. She had her heart broken, which added to her trust issues that made it harder for her to let someone in. She hadn't expected to find it in Josiah Huddington however. A police officer she often worked with and was friends with. Somehow the man had sneaked his way into her life, sending her heart all aflutter at the sight of him.

It was when Calliope learned her sister had come into town in 2021 that she was frightened of the prospect of him learning about her past, which she had kept close to her chest, aside from Riley, her college best friend. So she had broken up with him, breaking both their hearts in the process. Calliope managed to keep a distance to her sister in the meanwhile, not having run into her and create awkward moments. she's not ready to face her sister and dig up the hatred she had pushed down upon leaving Detroit, afraid that that would be the end of her bright personality that she had slowly rediscovered upon her freedom rediscovered at eighteen. That's a process she doesn't want to lose.

Slow fashion

Slow fashion is a fashion industry movement that pushes for environmental and social justice. Its distinguishing feature is that it focuses on the problem of overproduction and overconsumption. Slow fashion emerged in tandem with the "slow food" trend. Kate Fletcher, a fashion and sustainability writer and researcher, coined the word in a 2007 piece for The Ecologist. She defined fast fashion as more about greed than speed, about "selling more" and "making more money." Slow fashion, on the other hand, "is about designing, producing, consuming, and living better." “Slow” – she added – “is not the opposite of fast – there is no dualism – but a different approach in which designers, buyers, retailers, and consumers are more aware of the impacts of products on workers, communities, and ecosystems”.

When customers support the unsustainable rapid fashion manufacturing paradigm, the situation worsens. Slow fashion is equally concerned with responsible consumption. We purchase with the knowledge that our consumption has an influence on climate change.

Slow fashion's core concepts include:

A shift from quantity to quality, both in production and consumption. It’s not hell-bent on constant growth or accumulating more.

Manufacturing that respects the environment by using low-waste processes and avoiding harmful chemicals.

Providing workers a living wage and healthy working conditions. 

Producing collections in small batches or on a pre-order basis to avoid unsold inventory.

An uncomplicated supply chain where raw materials and labour aren’t scattered across the globe. It uses local materials and employs local workers as much as possible.

Transparency and honesty in its supply chain and practices. A great example is ethical jeans brand HNST, which has a “Hall of Fail” page that showcases its challenges and failures.

Using natural fibres, deadstock fabrics, or old textiles for upcycling.

The fashion industry's problems are becoming more widely known, but there is still more work to be done. According to a ThredUp poll from 2021, 74% of buyers are aware that their purchase patterns have a big influence on the earth, and 50% feel that rapid fashion is damaging to the environment. Despite this understanding, 72% of people continue to buy fast fashion because of the ease and low pricing. It might be tough to deviate from the norm and fully change your buying habits. The good news is that becoming involved in the slow fashion movement is simple, and you don't even need to buy anything new to get started!

1. Repair and Take Care of Your Clothes

Extend the life of your clothes by following care instructions. Machine wash on the lowest heat setting if you can and hang to dry to save on energy. For jeans, Levi’s even recommends washing once every 10 years to maintain the fit and fabric.

Learning basic sewing and de-staining techniques is also a great way to get more wear out of your clothes. If you don’t have time, take them to a professional or find out if there’s a repair café (a free pop-up event where volunteers and other visitors get together to repair various items) in your town or city.

2. Wear Second-hand Clothing

We have finally bid good riddance to the stigma of wearing second-hand clothes. Today, thrifting is so widespread that it is even covered on the pages of glossy high-fashion magazines, something unimaginable until not even two decades ago. 

There are many options for getting second-hand clothes. You can borrow from your family or friends’ closets for one-off events. You can also do clothing swaps or offer your own unused clothing to someone you know will love it.

Freecycling groups are also a goldmine for “new” old clothes. These are online sharing groups where people can donate or request free items. It facilitates gift-giving and communication among members of a local community because the exchange is often done in person. It has become increasingly popular as people are looking for ways to donate their stuff without having to go to charity centres. Unfortunately, statistics show that up to 80% of donations end up either incinerated, in landfills, or sent overseas to be sold. Search for a Facebook freecycling group in your area or check out websites like FreeCycle.org or Trash Nothing.

Looking for the thrill of the hunt? There are always one-of-a-kind and stylish pieces from thrift and vintage stores. Online thrifting is easier today thanks to platforms like Poshmark, Depop, Etsy, or Vestiaire Collective; there is something for everyone’s tastes and price points. 

3. Shop Mindfully

In Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States, somewhere between 50%- 80% of people’s wardrobes are unused. A closet bursting with clothes you only semi-love or never wear is also a sign of constant impulse shopping. The next time you feel the itch to shop, check your closet first. Do you really need a fifth new dress/pair of pants/crop top in your closet? Chances are you don’t. Your overfull closet will thank you, and so will the planet. 

If you absolutely need to shop, support local creators in your country. Choose high-quality fabrics that last longer, single-composition fabrics that can be easily recycled, or natural fibres that biodegrade easier.

Shopping mindfully also means being aware of companies’ greenwashing tactics. Slapping an “eco-friendly” tag isn’t proof that an item is sustainable. Do some background research on a brand by Googling or checking on the Good on You app. For unbiased and educational sustainable fashion content, websites like Fashion Revolution and Fashion Takes Action are great sources.

Remember that expensive price tags don’t always guarantee better quality and practices. Brands like Versace, Prada, Nike, and Adidas were implicated in a Clean Clothes Campaign paper that reported on these companies’ below-legal worker wages and terrible working conditions in their Eastern European factories.

Meetings of Greed and Envy - Deaf!MC AU

***Why did this take so much longer to write than it should've? Anyway, I finally wrote it, so here it is! Another addition to the Deaf!MC / Devildom in Silence AU! Thanks again to everyone for your support and love ❤ Also, pardon the super unoriginal title - B*** Summary: At the end of a very long first day in the Devildom with Satan, MC wanders off to the kitchen to get a snack...only to run into one Avatar of Greed who hasn't quite been brought up to speed on everything yet. Throw in an angry Leviathan and this day just could not get any worse.

AU Masterlist

All things considered, your first day in the Devildom could've gone a lot worse.

You could've been eaten by the three-headed beast of a dog you caught a glimpse of through one of the many arched windows. You could've been killed by one of the many many all-powerful beings that constantly surrounded you. You could've been turned into a frog or some other bullshit that you had previously considered impossible yesterday, but considering you're standing in literal Hell today seems much more plausible.

However none of that happened, and for that you were reluctantly grateful.

What the day consisted of instead was a surprisingly educational tour of the House of Lamentation with Satan, where the blond explained the purpose of every room and threw in the occasional tidbit of history.

Lucifer followed the two of you around for the hour or so with a scowl and his eyebrow deeply furrowed as he glared at Satan's signing hands. Eventually, he seemed to realize that regardless of his supervision, he had no way of moderating what Satan was saying and left.

This was when the tour really got interesting. Satan pointed out a dozen hiding places that he deemed were "Lucifer-Safe" and shared several legendary tales of pranks that he had performed on the eldest brother. The two of you eventually settled in the library where you discovered your mutual love for literature. The discussions that discovery had caused had easily filled the remainder of your day.

Maybe it was the lack of language barrier, but you found yourself a little less tense around Satan as the tour went on. You were by no means comfortable, but the jabs at Lucifer and the mischievous air that the demon carried helped you feel more relaxed around him.

And if the side glances that Satan kept throwing at you whenever you added on an observation of the room or laughed at his jokes were anything to go by, then maybe he didn't mind you too much either.

You stretched at the table you and Satan had been reading at and knocked on the wood to get his attention before you began to sign. "I'm going to go to the kitchen and get some water. Did you want anything?"

Though it was hardly noticeable, a brief glimmer of shock flickered through Satan's eyes before he offered you a charming smile. "I'm alright, though I should come with you. You'll probably get lost."

You scoffed and waved off his words as you stood up. "I'm deaf, not stupid. You did a very good job showing me around earlier. I'll be fine."

Satan looked at you for a moment, his eyes ever-so-slightly squinted, before he shrugged and turned back to his book. "If you say so. Consider this a test of sorts. Do your best to avoid my brothers. They're nuisances with no self-control."

You raised an eyebrow at him, "And in comparison to them you're supposedly not?"

Satan smiled sharply at the comment. His acid green eyes flaring with repressed power and strength as they held your gaze. "If I, the Avatar of Wrath, had no self-control, you wouldn't be standing after a comment like that. But alas, I am not like my brothers. Watch yourself, MC."

You tensed at the not-so-subtle threat in his words and eyed the demon cautiously as he gestured for you to leave. Maybe there was some validity to Lucifer's warning about Satan after all. You swallowed down the fear that was creeping its way up your spine and left for the kitchen.

Mammon blinked at the sight before him.

A stranger. A weak, non-magical, human stranger, by the looks of things, was climbing the cupboards of the kitchen trying to reach the glasses on the top shelf, completely oblivious to the world around them.

How the hell a human even managed to get into the Devildom, let along the House of Lamentation was beyon-

Oh. Right.

The exchange program. They'd all agreed to have some mortal brat live with them for a year to appease Diavolo's current quest for world peace or whatever.

If his memory served him right, Mammon was pretty sure Lucifer had mentioned something about him being the one in charge of you. Which, considering he wasn't even aware that you had arrived, he was doing a pretty bad job at the task thus far.

Mammon weighed the pros and cons.

He could leave now, pretend he never saw anything, and go to his room enjoying what little time he had to himself left until Lucifer forced him into babysitter duty. Or, he could avoid Lucifer's wrath of the human being neglected, get this all over with, and possibly gain a person to do whatever he says in the process.

His decision was made for him as you finally grabbed a glass from the cupboard before sidestepping across the counters to where the snacks were stored and pulled out a pack of his Hell-Sauce noodles.

"Oi! Human! What do you think you're doing?" Mammon demanded as he walked towards you from behind.

To Mammon, it appeared as though you were completely ignoring him as you continued to browse through your snack options. In reality, you just hadn't heard a word he said, nor had you spotted him yet.

Mammon growled in frustration. "Oi!!! I'm talking to you!" He slammed his hand on the counter beside your feet.

You yelped very loudly as you tried to scramble away from the sudden vibrations and then screamed as you finally spotted Mammon. In your state of shock, your balance stood no chance the stash of snacks in your arms went flying in the air and you went slipped off of the cupboards.

Mammon cursed under his breath as he quickly moved to catch you.

You both stared at each other with wide eyes and red cheeks before Mammon came to his senses and promptly dropped you. "What do ya think ya doin'? Stupid human," he grumbled as he looked around at the snacks scattered across the kitchen. "Bad enough that ya didn't come to me when ya got here. If you got hurt, Lucifer would be after my head ya know! So now you owe me.

Mammon paused from where he had been gathering up all the food to glance over at you. He frowned as he noticed that you weren't looking at him or paying attention to him at all, but rather texting on a D.D.D. A low growl came from him as he snatched the device from your hands. "I'm talking to you! Geeze, do they not teach manners in the human world?!"

You sat there, eyes wide in fear as you frantically shook your hands in defence. You tried to sign to him that you were deaf, but your lack of a verbal response only seemed to make him even more agitated. His eyes narrowed into slits as he glared down at you. "What? Can't even stand up for yourself against the Great Mammon?"

"Idiot. They can't hear you."

Mammon's head snapped over to see Leviathan leaning against the kitchen door with a scowl on his face. Mammon glanced between the two of you in confusion. "What do ya mean they can't hear me? How would ya even know that?"

Levi rolled his eyes and gestured to your quivering hands. "They were signing, you moron. They were trying to tell you they're deaf."

Mammon's eyes widened as clarity washed over him. He scoffed and avoided Levi's eyes as he threw your D.D.D. back at you. "Whatever. I totally knew that. I was just messing with them. Ya know?"

Levi ran a hand over his face at his brother's stupidity and raised an eyebrow at him. "I don't care. What I do care about is the money you owe me. Where is it?"

Mammon laughed awkwardly as he scratched the back of his neck. "Aww, come on Levi. Can't you wait a little longer? I said I'd give it to ya. I just need some more time."

Rather than appeasing Leviathan, like Mammon had hoped, the words only seemed to anger him further. He took a step closer to Mammon. "You've been saying that for the last 200 years!"

The white-haired demon yelped and moved so that the kitchen island was in between them. "Hey, no! It hasn't been 200 years! It's been 260! Get it right, Levi!"

As the two continued to bicker, you coward further into the corner of the kitchen. It was safe to assume that demons and heightened emotions weren't exactly the best mix, and if you wanted to get out of here unharmed, you probably should've moved while their attention was on each other rather than you.

You carefully rose to your feet, and as stealthily as possible began to tip-toe over to the door.

Unfortunately for you, that was the exact moment Mammon caught your eye. His eyes glimmered in a way that caused a shiver to run down your spine as he smirked. "You know Levi, I may not understand or appreciate any of the weird-ass Otaku shit that you do, but I'm pretty sure this one likes to collect the same stuff that you do. I bet you'd kill to have some of the stuff in their collection!"

You stiffened as Mammon's lips moved in a way that promised nothing but trouble for you. Leviathan had also tensed, but for a very different reason, as he peeked over at you from the corner of his eye.

"You know what I'm talking about..." Mammon continued, "those doll things you always buy. What do you call 'em again?"

Leviathan was practically vibrating at this point with a cautiously excited energy as his gaze flickered quickly between you and Mammon. "Figurines."

"Yeah, those!" Mammon's smile widened as he latched onto the subject, and your stomach dropped in dread.

Leviathan finally fully turned to face you, his face was practically manic with impatience and curiosity as he stared into your soul. To your surprise, he moved his hands and began to sign in the best sign language that you had seen in your time in the Devildom thus far. "So, you also collect figurines?" You didn't even get a chance to respond, before Levi eagerly moved closer to you, his hands speeding through various signs. "Which ones? Do you have any of the main characters from Battle Princess Brigade? Or Girls Only, or Diamond Dust?"

You blinked for a minute, wondering who this blue-haired nerd was and why the fuck he wasn't chosen to be your interpreter when, quite honestly, he was better at signing than even you were.

Noting that he was still waiting for a response, you hesitantly nodded your head.

Levi's face burst into a large grin as his amber eyes sparkled in excitement. "Oh no way! No way! You're so lucky! The human world sounds amazing! I'm so jealous!!!"

You were honestly going through some form of whiplash from the huge difference of attitudes between Mammon's initial irritation towards you, to Levi's fury at Mammon and now this child-like excitement that now radiated from the demon. His good mood was in no way helping ease your nerves.

Suddenly Levi froze and narrowed his eyes. "Wait a minute..." He turned around, and both of you suddenly realized that Mammon was nowhere to be seen in the room.

Levi groaned and pulled on his hair in frustration. "You've got to be kidding me! That ass, Mammon ran off!"

He whipped back around to you. "Do you realize what just happened? Mammon used you as a distraction to get away from me!" Your breath caught in your throat as the energy around Levi seemed to shift once more into something more sinister. "Or maybe I should say he used you as a sacrifice."

Oh boy, you did not like the sound of that.

You gulped and nervously gestured to the exit. "I should probably go. Exchange student duties and all. Don't wanna keep Satan waiting around too much."

You tried to make your way out of the kitchen but were stopped by a hand gripping tightly onto your wrist. Levi grinned, baring his sharp fangs as he carefully spoke, making sure that you understood every word that left his lips. "Oh no. You're coming with me."'

You could do little more than yelp as you were harshly dragged along towards the demon's den.

Levi harshly and quickly shoved you into his room before slamming the door behind both of you.

He turned to face you, before eyeing you in judgement.

He wasn't sure what to make of you yet. Apparently, you had some form of good taste, if you collecting figurines like Mammon said was true in the slightest, and it was nice to be able to communicate through sign language with someone else for once. But for all he knew, you were still just some normie!

You scowled at the demon yanked your hand out of his grasp. "What's your deal?!"

Levi scoffed and raised an eyebrow. "Why do you think my deal is? Isn't it obvious? Imagine what would happen if someone saw me inviting you into my room! A human who doesn't even look like an otaku, but a normie! You know what people would say, right?!"

You rolled your eyes and glanced around the room. Levi couldn't help the small swell of pride that bloomed in his chest as he noted the flicker of wonder that danced across your expression. Not many people looked at anything involving him with such a glowing reaction. It felt nice.

Still, as you caught him staring, Levi couldn't help but blush. You tilted your head, glancing down at his hands, "How are you so good at sign language?"

Levi instinctively tensed at the question. In truth, he had taught himself to sign after a few bad panic attacks had rendered him non-verbal for a day or two. It wasn't super effective, as only Satan could understand him, but it came in handy when his mood buttons weren't enough to accurately communicate what he needed.

He obviously couldn't tell you that though. It'd be stupid to tell something so personal to a pathetic normie like you.

"It came up in one of the anime's that I watch," he answered instead. You seemed to take the lie easily, nodding as you continued to take in his bedroom.

He noticed your attention pause you finally caught sight of Henry swimming happily around his tank. He stomped his foot twice to get your attention, before smiling softly as he gestured to the fish. "That's my goldfish and best friend, Henry."

Your head snapped up in excitement as he finished fingerspelling the name. A very familiar gleam of excitement shone in your eyes as you looked up at him. "Like the protagonist from the Tale of the Seven Lords?"

Levi's heart stopped in his chest as he looked at you in complete awe. With those ten words, you had unknowingly gained all of Levi's respect and affection.

Satan was pissed and maybe a teeny bit concerned.

You had said you were going to get a glass of water. Not a snack, not a meal, not anything else, just a glass of water. On top of that, he had given you specific instructions to avoid his brothers.

And yet here he was, nearly an hour later, marching towards Levi's rooms after interrogating a cackling Mammon because apparently even getting just a single glass of stupid fucking water was too much to let a human do alone!

He had signed up to be your interpreter because he knew it would put Lucifer on edge and would give him an abundance of opportunities to mess with the eldest brother. However, he had greatly underestimated how much trouble you would be, and it was only the first day.

Satan growled as forced the door of Levi's room open, breaking off any locks that should have prevented the action, and what does he find?!

You and Levi, fully decked out in what he recognized to be some of Leviathan's favourite TSL merch, were enthusiastically signing to one each other faster than he could even begin to comprehend with huge ass smiles on your face. For Diavolo's sake, Levi was laughing. Whatever you two were talking about, you were so engrossed in the subject, that neither of you had even noticed the fucking door get torn off of its hinges.

Satan scowled as he loudly stamped his foot, causing you both to jump as you turned to face him. The two of you cowered at the sheer amount of rage that poured off of the demon.

Deciding to ignore Leviathan for the moment, Satan fixed his gaze on you. He sneered as, instead of flinching back in fear, you held his stare and even lifted your chin in defiance. "Where have you been?" Satan demanded, "I've been waiting for you for an hour! What are you even doing in here?"

You blinked at him once, then twice, smiling brightly at him as you gestured to the tank behind you. "Hello, Satan. Do you have time for our Lord and Saviour, Henry the Second?"

Satan felt his eye twitch as Levi nearly doubled over in laughter beside you.

He took it back. This was not going to be fun. This was going to be bloody fucking terrible.
