WIP Wednesday

It's that time of the week! Now that I'm back from vacations I've been working on the next chapter of you're a walking disaster and yet-, which is very close to being finished (but augh, the heartbreak):

“So this is how it’s going to be now? You’ll just sit there by yourself and not talk to anybody?”

Patroclus glances up at Achilles, his humble lunch of bread and cheese forgotten in his hands. The sun blinds him and hurts his eyes. Achilles is glaring at him, arms folded before his chest. His eyes are hard and his jaw is set, a muscle playing at his temple. 

“Not anybody,” Patroclus says. “Just you.” 

“Well, too fucking bad, you’re talking to me right now. So just give up the act, okay? It isn’t funny anymore.”

Patroclus' anger flares hot. The fucking mouth on him. “Get out of my face, Achilles.” 

Achilles tsks, planting his feet even more firmly on the ground. “What did I even say to you, huh? What did I say? I just said—”

Patroclus doesn’t wait to hear the rest of it. He shoves his lunch back in his bag and gets up. Recess will be over soon anyway, he doesn’t have time for this pointless conversation. 

Achilles catches his arm. 

“Why are you being like this?” he asks, his voice hard, but Patroclus thinks he can detect a sharp and desperate edge there. “I told you I didn’t mean it like that. If you’d stayed for just one minute…” 

The words peter out into nothingness. When Patroclus doesn’t turn around to look at him, he lets out a shaky sigh. “Pat, come on,” he whispers. “Please.” 

This is the moment, Patroclus thinks. The moment to take the hair tie off his wrist and toss it at his feet, to trample it in the dust for good measure, to pay him back with the same coin. It would be so good if he could do that. It would only be fair. It would make him feel so much better about… all of this.  

The moment the thought crosses his mind, he knows it for the lie it is. He can’t do it. Can’t find it in his heart to cross that line. Maybe he’s just a coward deep down, soft and weak like his father always told him, but he doesn’t want to hurt Achilles, not even in retaliation. Whatever twisted fantasy he had of doing that tastes bitter now that he’s near him. Hurting him would only hurt Patroclus more. And deep down he knows that even though Achilles didn’t keep his promise, Patroclus is still so desperate to hold onto his own. So desperate for this, for him, that it shames him. 

“I have to go,” he mutters, before he can lose his nerve. He slips free of Achilles’ grasp and hurries back to the classroom, with minutes until the end of recess to spare.

Blood and Blue Diamonds: Afterword

Earlier this year I believed I could be a simple writer with a simple dream: let Jayce and Viktor from Arcane solve a nice little mystery instead of being miserable all the time. How naive I was to think I could escape my nature.

Over the next several months my dream would slowly grow into a sprawling web of historical research and tortuous plotting that at points consumed nearly every waking moment of my life. I figured if I was going to do a noir AU I wanted to do it right — to capture hardboiled Los Angeles in a way that fit into the genre without seeming like a parody or a caricature of detective fiction tropes, while also feeling somehow intrinsically Arcane-ish. I’m typically a science fiction writer and I wanted the chance to do a period piece, which was in its own way stranger than writing about an imaginary world.

The resulting fic has led me to places I never expected and if I’m being honest nearly driven me insane, and nobody in my real life will ever read it, so yeah, nice going on that one. It sounds pretentious, but this is the hardest I’ve ever worked on a writing project, far more than any original fiction I’ve attempted. Thanks to @feudusang for talking over the initial idea with me, @themirokai and @gloriesunsung for a bunch of lovely comments, @starship-strfck for illustrating one of my favorite scenes, author Mike Davis (who will god willing never see this) for making me fall in love with twentieth century LA, and everyone else who’s been reading.

Thanks so much for the tag @icatee ! Starting a new post so the other doesn’t get horrendously long.

Favourite Colour: I’m not sure I have one really. Maybe a very saturated blue?

Favourite Song: This varies widely for me. I’ve had Lovecats by The Cure stuck in my head a lot lately and I love that song, so we’ll go with that.

Favourite Book: Also a somewhat impossible question so we’ll go with the books I’ve reread the most. Those are American Gods by Neil Gaiman, the Ancillary Justice series by Anne Leckie, and The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas.

The Last Sentence You Wrote: Assuming this is about fic and you don’t want the actual last sentence I wrote which was from a contract about a submerged gravel wetland. But I am still going to cheat a bit because the first sentence of the last paragraph I wrote is more intriguing.

There was a door in Hob Gadling’s dreams.

(I’m poking at Dreamling again. Not sure it’s going to go anywhere. Just vibes at this point.)

Something Odd In Your House: Many years before I met him, my father-in-law built this piece of furniture by hand. We call it a hutch but it’s got cabinets on the bottom and shelves on top. My husband has been toting this thing around everywhere he’s lived for many years. It’s functionally useful but it didn’t at all fit the aesthetic of our current house: all of our stuff is pretty modern looking and the hutch is quite old timey in its design. In order to make it work in our living room we (with my father-in-law’s blessing) decided to paint it. And that is why I have a large piece of furniture that is painted a vibrant aquamarine. I used to really dislike the hutch and now I adore it.

A Tattoo You Want To Get: When I was a teenager I lifeguarded at a retirement community pool. The tattoos you get in your 20s and 30s look really different when you’re 70. It turned me off from tattoos.

A Place You Want To Travel To: There are So Many places I’d like to go! New Zealand and Iceland come immediately to mind.

Last Time You Were Hugged: Last night. Goodnight hug for the kiddo when putting her to bed.
