Somehow going into the final Yr of uni and actually slowly coming back to using tumblr again because of its resistance to algorithms for nostalgia reasons. (Not what this is post was about I'm getting distracted)

Anyway, I have the huge urge to write and I know what I want to write but I've never written anything without the cause being a random one liner appearing in my head and then building a plot around it. And... this time the one liner isn't appearing.

It's also been ages since I've written something neither for uni nor for ao3. And I'm trying so hard! Character creation is difficult, world building is uncontrollable, ams words are...not flowing. Dam(n/m)ed, if you will.

If you were to write a spin-off about a side character, which would you pick?

Unsurprisingly, I'm actually planning lots of prequels, short stories, and weird in-universe documents for Heralds of Rhimn. Two big ones center around specific side characters from the main series.

The first is Children of Snow, a Frostbiters-centered prequel. Gildhe is the main PoV character, but other Frostbiter kids like Karah, Delise Merlie, and Alevar are liable to get a few chapters. Mostly, it's about Lonnie's disappearance, how poorly Gildhe deals with it, and also about how Gildhe ends up pushing Mep out of the family. Funny enough, Mep will not be a PoV character.

(He's had enough time to bias the narrative through the main series!)

The second idea is a presently-untitled novel about how Inky got kicked out of his noble house. Features some of the older characters, like Atevia and Ainzel, plus Iriah and Lucketh back when they were alive. I've had this idea for longer, but it's not quite as fleshed-out as Children of Snow.

Other extremely undeveloped ideas for stories with side characters include;

Courtfather Snow and Charlan's relationship and breakup.

Tincre's life. Oh Tincre . . .

Evain becomes the first guy to become a wyfwolf after the war dies down, and I'm sure that'd be a fun tale to tell.

Maybe how Morekai met Silamir? Eh. Maybe.

Short story about Crislie's Ma and Da meeting each other.

Something to do with the other courts, especially the Mirthful Ones. I love inventing their jestercore puritan names.

Sticking her all the way over in "mom friend" fandom interpretation purgatory wherein she is only allowed to be nurturing and sweet and fret over the boys and never goof off or make dumb mistakes ever. Any involvement in a comedic situation is her reacting to it with fond exasperation, etc. etc. Does she like to take care of people? Absolutely, big part of her character is her need to do things for others so that they keep liking her. But she is not immune to a good ol' fashioned Idiot Plot(tm). Momfriendification claims the characterization of many kind but silly girls in fandom every single day. Sad. Tragic.

As for "she would not fucking say that": anything that turns her self-esteem issues (her feelings of inferiority and envy of her sister particularly, which would probably briefly get explored in-canon via Heaven's Door character exposition reading her to filth about it) into her spouting not-like-other-girls sentiment/disparaging other girls for their interests/presentation. She would not make assumptions about the gyaru girlies because of how they choose to style themselves, she would not hear her classmates talking about makeup routines and think they're silly for spending time on it. Hachi does feel like she doesn't measure up to the perceived effortless charisma/style/social skills of girls her age around her, but this is usually directed inwards towards her own perceived personal failings, not outwards. Which is its own issue that makes her forming genuine connections with the girls she puts on this sort of pedestal difficult, just in a completely opposite (fruitier) way.
