“We all have to get up.” Eden stood by her parent's bed. Her eyes were enormous, blazing with determined intensity. Her round, pale face and lank hair gave her the appearance of some ghostly entity standing in the dark of the room. The littlest brother Sam was behind her, kneading his hands.

Secondo and Sandra were no strangers to their daughter’s habit of standing by their bedside with something cryptic to say. Maybe it was Secondo’s bloodline, or maybe the eight-year-old was just extra theatrical, it was hard to tell. Secondo didn't mind it all that much. Sometimes her mysterious statements became accurate portents.

Not this morning, though. They expected her here. In fact they were surprised it was this late. She was a very punctual child, with a strong sense of what was necessary.

No surprises there.

“Mommy, it's time. Everybody has got to get up.”

“Nope, this is your father's job,” Sandra muttered. She sleepily tapped his back. “Magician and man of the house and all that. I've got fifteen minutes until I'm getting up.”

“We need to hurry then,” Eden said solemnly. Sam nodded, still frowning.

“I'm getting up at the pace I'm getting up,” Secondo announced, pulling himself upright. He reached for his forearm crutch.”Go get Paul if you want somebody fast.”

“Paul! We forgot Paul!” Sam hissed. “We left him alone!”

“Well, go get him!” Eden ordered back. Sam slipped out the door to wake their older brother. Eden paced on the carpet.

Secondo snorted, shaking his head. “Serious business.”

“They take after you, dear,” Sandra replied from under the quilt.

The door opened and Sam dragged Paul in by the wrist. The teenager blinked slowly in the soft darkness, his hair looking like it was caught in a windstorm. “Whuh—”

“You and Daddy have to go check!” Eden insisted.

Paul tossed his head and he locked eyes with his father, his face now full of determination. Secondo watched his son struggle not to break character. “You're right. We need to make sure,” Paul announced in a hushed tone. Eden and little Sam hugged each other excitedly.

Secondo finally got the momentum to pull himself upright and onto his crutch. “You're the fastest of all of us,” Secondo told his oldest son. “You have to lead the mission this year. Good luck.”

“You can't let him see you,” Eden reminded him while Sam bobbed his head vigorously in agreement. “Not for even one second.”

“Godspeed,” muttered Sandra.

The four adventurers organized themselves at the end of the hallway. Down the hall was the living room, now slowly becoming awash with reddish light from the large curtained windows. “Go on, Paul,” whispered Secondo.

Paul nodded and crept down the hallway, dramatically stopping every few feet to look back at his younger siblings. Eden, the mission commander, glared as she observed his task.

At a pace that seemed like forever to the children under eight years old, Paul finally reached the end of the hall, peeking around the corner. He turned and tossed his hand at Secondo. “Now you,” ordered Eden in a whisper.

The old magician nodded solemnly and walked with as much authority and dark majesty as he could in pajamas. He met up with Paul at the end of the hall, craning his neck to observe the living room as cautiously as he could. He gave the younger children a satisfied nod. His mouth was a thin, firm line, his whitened eye gleaming in the dim light.

“All clear. Santa’s gone. And he left presents for you.”

How old is your baby?: 5 in my post canon alternate universe (7-8 years after Borderlands 3)

Tell us about your baby!: She's the testtube biological baby of Sir Hammerlock & Wainwright Jakobs (which basically means she could aim and shoot a pistol at the age of 4) and has 4 siblings (one of which is also an oc, but is an adoptive kid, and the rest are canon characters who got adopted). She has a big plushie collection (some knitted or sewn by Wainwright, some crocheted by Hammerlock, some being gifts from extended family or the Crimson raiders) and also fucked up eldritch powers beyond human comprehension bc her parents are abominations from beyond the veil (my Borderlands rewrite AU is a mess haha) which she primarily uses to teleport all over the house, causing an understandable amount of problems. Clay is her weird uncle and she loves him. She's kinda based off Wednesday Addams because autism. Also she is autistic, the nicest weirdgirl on Eden-6, swears an unusual amount for a 5 year old (being around Wainwright del Frisco Jakobs-Hammerlock will do that to you) and often swaps between her Edenian (space southern) and her Hermesian (space british) accents bc yknow. Just listen to her dads speak and you'll see.

Anything else you want to add?: (1) Most people call her Reb for short but Wainwright calls her Rebby because yes. (2) She eventually grows to inherit the Jakobs corporation and generally sorta girlbossify but that's extreme future timeskip stuff I don't talk abt often because I feel cringe about it. (3) Her name continues on the general theme of Jakobs related things having biblical symbolism - Rebekah is Jacob's mother in the book of Genesis (if i remember correctly). (3) Her voiceclaim is Lili Zanotto from Psychonauts :D (4) She calls Hammerlock "Papa" and Wainwright "Daddy"

sawyer hale is a kid who had a pretty hard knock life in a cyberpunk dystopia city. after deciding his dad kinda sucked, sawyer ran away and emancipated himself at 16 and moved into a different, nicer city and became a hermit for a while. afterwards, he proceeded to save the world twice; once he saved a cyberworld from the big bad capitalists and second he saved the universe from collapsing via terrible creature. as he goes through these adventures he learns how to be comfortable and happy with himself again.

also he destroyed his dad when he possessed a robot body. go kid!!

sawyer super loves tech but he gave it up for a while because Shitty Dad Ruining It For Him, but he eventually finds his passion again and makes phenomenal inventions. also he is the embodiment of Baby because all the adults around him want to scoop him up and carry him around for being a little issues boy with issues. they love singing and the arts in general, and they're very open-minded, which makes them a pretty good friend.

oh yeah all his adventures kinda messed up his biology so he's partially made of code now. and also has wings made of code. he can design them however he wants like retexturing game assets. YIPPIE!

There's absolutely no doubting that the discoveries made on Prosperina have led to incredible scientific breakthroughs and achievements. If we continue our research we will surely be able to move humanity light-years ahead technologically and evolutionary. Everything we have discovered so far is only scratching the surface of what we believe is possible.

It's unfortunate that Earth will fall as a result of the anti-universe cascade failure. However, we believe the merging of the two states of being, the soul and the body, is a necessity to continue our work.

You and your families will be spared. Rockets to Luna will be ferried daily until 1/1/2000 at midnight, at which point we have estimated it will be far too dangerous to attempt any more travel and communication.

If you wish to move to habitation on Luna be sure to reserve a home and occupation. Pack your belongings quickly, but make sure that you leave nothing you would miss behind, as you will not have a chance to return. If you choose to remain on Earth or are unable to leave, safe zones and bunkers have been designated and provided to you.

Project ARK no longer has remaining slots. Those wishing to find salvation on Prosperina will be required to join the waiting list in case one of the privileged few is unable or unwilling to attend.

Thank you to everyone who stuck around through all of Otherside, and especially those who have been around since last year when I wrote Eden! When I conceptualized Eden initially it was a true game of improvisation, where I wrote whatever felt cool or interesting on a near-daily basis. Even midway through the story and deciding on the path it would take, I knew I could take the plot further and develop it into an entire universe. This last year has been a long process of conceptualizing, changing and refining Otherside into what you see today, as a stepping stone into the larger plot and universe. I personally am very proud of how much better this story has been than Eden, even when I had to crunch near the end anyway.

I want to thank Dawn, @ice-fairy-chiruno once again for creating incredible artwork for this story. It truly would lack its charm and DNA without what she provided.

I would also once again like to thank @technicolorxsn for being one of my biggest fans and supporters, and someone who figured out very early that Heresy was intended to be a trans Jordan.

These stories have truly given me a renewed purpose. I'm personally very proud of what I've come up with and I'm excited to put it all on paper and let the ending I've developed come into being. I hope you'll all stick with it to see what it is, too.

I give very few Pagan, Witchcraft, and Occult books 5 stars for very good reason; most of them are shit and even the good ones fall down the rabbit holes of pseudomythology and ahistorical bullshit at minimum ... It's just something you have to watch out for and be constantly vigilant of regardless of who you're reading and when the book was published- but especially the older the book is.

Grandma’s daughter

I’ve struggled thus far to be my own person,

I used to think it’s something we’d be handed on a silver platter,

Something we cannot possibly ignore, until,

I accompanied my mother on evenings,

To nurse my grandmother, to watch the telly at midnight morn.

I collected her novels, poems and dusty storylines,

Her fondness poised in nursery rhymes-

I let myself be close to her,

And found out something,

A mystery in plain sight, one I could not resist. 

It sparked like a dangerous taser,

An electric chair that makes you saner-

the woman in her fancy wheelchair with a clean plait 

seemed a mirror, in disguise, staring at my face. 

The cold gaze in her youth age,

The memory that speaks of fallen days,

Her visage after a witty phrase,

The silent erudite, a heart disdained.

Quite a character I feel to match,

But I assure her regality to me is, mismatched.

How dearly I wish to wear her name,

Trace her hands on tilled earth green again,

Pen on a crossword in utter glee

And be the Clementine she’d need!

It seems so distant, I cannot quite reach,

I wish I could travel ages back to the streets,

To meet herself in just twenty years but -

It is now late, and though at least

I wish I could have her here with me.

In one hospital bed she lies,

Neither a 4711 nor flowers by her side,

‘She breathes slow’ my mother says.

Her eyes begging to flow but locked in for late.

I try to skim for Yeats, Hardy and Keats,

But no word of mortality will comfort this feat,

How does one prepare for an end?

Wear sackcloth and ashes in hope of a change of fate,

How can one ask for a miracle today?

How do you possibly break bread with the dead?

If I could go back in time, sift all my wickedness and whims,

Then heaven would beg for me instead,

But now they want you, to keep you for themselves.

The impending agony brings only your smile,

A painful dote reminder I’d treasure for life.

I want to run, to scream and look

for you for a final goodbye-

To be passed the parcel and to wish you Godspeed,

But I’d run only too far to see your garden of Eden now overrun with weeds.

A/N: You know I love any excuse to write my two best girls. Finley’s love for Eden knows no bounds.

Snow days weren’t fun for all.

While most of the kids could run around out in the cold throwing snowballs at each other on their day off from school, Eden wasn’t so lucky. Chilly air wouldn’t be good for lungs, nor would getting soaked as the snow melted through her clothes. Thus, the girl was stuck inside while the others were enjoying a fun snow day.

Edgar finished his current report before taking a break to check on her. Normally, quiet didn’t alarm him. Eden was calm and soft when playing, not making much noise. However, as stealthy as they were attempting to be, he’d overheard Caroline fussing at Finley.

The lights were off for all but the small bathroom. His boots squished with each step, the carpet sopping with water. He couldn’t fathom what the trio might be up to. Perhaps the sink had been left running and spilled over? They were all aware of the rule not to use the tub without supervision.

But through the crack in the door, the sight surprised him.

Caroline adjusted the mitten on Eden’s hand, amber eyes checking to make sure she was properly bundled up. “Even though we’re inside, we have to be careful that you don’t get too cold.”

“As long as we don’t get in it, she’ll be fine!” Finley countered, receiving a wicked glare from the young Clemence. She took Eden’s free hand and tugged along.

“Why is our bathtub filled with snow?”

All three turned at his voice and the two older girls exchanged a concerned glance. Eden clapped her clothed hands together and said, “They brought me snow.”

“Yeah, since she can’t go outside, I carried in so many buckets full of snow!” Finley explained, grinning happily at her successful plan. It had taken a lot of time, and her arms ached from it. Soldiers had questioned her but thanks to Caroline, they’d gotten away with it.

The heart defenders couldn’t say no to her.

“I see.” He was clearly impressed. A simple solution to a complex problem. Obviously, she’d spilled some, leading to the floor being soaking wet. “Well, carry on. Let’s make use of the snow while it’s still cold.”

The three girls all lit up at his blessing to continue their crazy plan. Instead of leaving, the Jack joined in. Winter usually brought down Eden’s mood, since most of it she spent stuck inside. But today, she was elated to have a chance to play with snow.

The two mortal enemies had managed to work together in order to make Eden happy. Although, they still bickered quite a lot. His break turned into retiring for the evening. He’d complete the rest of his work tomorrow, instead choosing to build snow castles and draw pictures in the bathtub full of snow.

Edgar patted his daughter on the head, delighted that she was having so much fun. Emerald eyes fell on the misfit of the group, a question arising. He knew why she’d come. Her undying affection for Eden always on display. But..

“Finley, how did you get here?”

Amethyst eyes flickered away, debating on what to say. “Well, I told Ray that I was going to see Eden and then I did.” It didn’t answer his question, but Edgar was sure that the King of Spades probably didn’t give permission.

“I’ll send a messenger to inform them of your whereabouts.”

Eden tugged on his sleeve. “Can Finley stay the night? Isn’t there supposed to be a storm?” She didn’t want to send her back in dangerous weather, and was having too much fun for it to end already.

Sending her home wouldn’t be a problem, but he found it quite hard to resist the pleading look in her puppy eyes. He and the Ace of Spades had come to an agreement after their daughter’s had become friends. Since Eden couldn’t stay away due to her health issues, Finley had an open invitation if Edgar allowed it.

“Alright, I suppose I can arrange for that.”

He chuckled softly at their cheers of delight. It was never a dull evening with Finley around. And she always made his daughter quite happy.
