hi! how are you doing?
(love those pitch & jack dolls btw (theyre so squishable!!)
I just got myself CSP bcuz of the discount. I've been wondering, what brushes do you use for your artworks? the lineart and colour?? apologies if this has been asked before, but i rlly wanna know ^^''
hav a nice day!
Hey!! I am still. In the stress. But I am alive. (and thank you so much!!!)
I hope you’re enjoying CSP so far!!! The asset store is my favorite part of it so I definitely encourage you to shop around and try a ton of brushes until you find the ones you like! But, here are the ones that I use:
Tumblr media
This is my go-to as of late. It’s the PERFECT digital pencil imo, I haven’t found any others that capture the same sketchy roughness of traditional pencil on paper. The line variation is vast even on the same brush size, and depends on tilt & pressure and I’m kind of obsessed lol. I use it for sketching and doing lineart.
Tumblr media
If I’m looking for lineart that’s less sketchy/pencil-y, the mechanical pencil of this set is my go-to. The marker I tend to use on larger sizes for things like blush or large areas of shadow when I’m rendering - anything with a semi-soft edge I want to lay down pretty quick. (Fair warning, I think this brushset has been updated since I downloaded but I assume the new versions are good as well)
Tumblr media
These are my more painterly rendering brushes. I’ll use the mechanical and marker brushes from the previous set in tandem with these when I’m doing a more blended & detailed colored piece. But I’ve also used them for sketching and lineart in the past - my Danny Phantom art was largely done with these two brushes.
Other than that, I use the lasso fill tool to quickly lay down large areas of color, and for more gradual gradients I use a mix of the soft airbrush and blend tools. Also I use liquify, like……a lot……

I giggled running after the other girls, I wasn't sure where we were going, or where we were but that sort of thing was par for the course. The other girls ran off without me but I spotted a ladies' room so I ushered myself in and shut the door behind me. I spotted myself in the mirror taking a good look at myself for the first time in ... I wasn't sure how long.
My white plastic knee-high boots hugged my legs tightly, my tights so ripped and laddered little remained of them, my black sleeveless shift dress tight to my withering body, a white plastic belt around my waist with a round buckle, my little wrist high white gloves, my necklace long gone, earrings too, my make up smudged and muddled into nothing but madness, my hair still stiff half up and half down with my white clip to pin the back.
In a moment of clarity, I threw away my tights, wiped off my makeup and washed my face with the sink's water and soap, I took my little comb from my white leather clutch bag and fixed what little needed to be repaired on my hair, I dried my face and fixed my smokey eye shadow high to, my two liner lines one at my eyelid the other at the crest of my eye where my eye shadow ended, I added a slight blush to my cheeks and nose tip leaving my freckled exposed, I added mascara to my already fake lashes both top and bottom, and I grabbed my black lipstick so dark and dense as well as my white lip liner, I lined my lips perfectly and then added the lipstick blending the two with my finger to create a sort of gradient to my lips. I spritzed enough of my perfume to drown an elephant and refilled my bag before heading back out following the direction the other girls had gone.
I soon picked up on the music playing and found myself in an art Deco-style bar, with carpets,  a grey floor with dancing people, and a bar littered with people, I found my way to the floor setting my handbag on the floor to dance around, I found the other girls I had spent my time with even if I didn’t even know their names. They greeted me with a smile and handed me a drink which I quickly had and joined the dance.
My mind became fuzzy, the vibration of the music through the floor, time seemed to slow, like all that existed in the world was myself and the music as I danced.
In a moment of clarity, I looked across the bar, as they offered me another drink.
I saw him across the bar, and sat on one of the stools. He had a pair of black shined shoes, a pair of black jeans tight to his legs, a black t-shirt with some silver chains hung low, a green button down with only two or three of the bottom buttons done up, he had a thick leather trench coat over him and a cowboy hat on the bar beside him, He had fluffy blonde hair and a gracing of facial hair, his brown eyes seeming to linger on me as I danced. I smiled at him as I danced having some more of my drink, He smirked watching me, and taking a drink of his own beer.
I passed the drink along and continued to dance for a while until I felt a hand across my arm.
His hand stroked across my arm gently up towards my shoulder so I moved back to press us together. I was utterly lost in the music and movements feeling him grind against my back and I often did it back to him too, his hands often stroked my arms and waist guiding our dance to the music, his jacket gone often the cold of his chains and rings would make me jump a little, I could smell his teakwood scented aftershave, often feel his facial hair tickling against my skin when he would move closer to my exposed neck, I often found my hand moving back to twist my fingers in the locks of his hair.
“You’re a good dancer.” He whispered in my ear
“I have a good partner” I smirked back just as the bottle found its way to my hand again I went to drink but he grabbed the bottle
“Don’t.” He warns
“Why not?”
“It’s not just beer”
“I know” I giggled
“Don’t.” He warns “I think I’d like to dance with you sober”
“Really?”
“For me baby” he whispered
I blushed and passed on the bottle without taking a sip continuing to dance getting more intense
“Good girl” he smirked
“Can we dance?”
“Of course, we can”
We danced getting closer and closer his hands wandering up and down my body his fingers gently stroking across my bottom lip
“You’re beautiful” he cooed
“I don’t know if you are handsome or not, haven’t looked at you.”
“Why don’t you?”
“Why should I? We’re just dancing”
“What if we wanna do more than dance?”
“Boys often don’t wanna do more than dance”
“Who said I was a boy?” He whispered, “What do Men want?”
“Men? Well they often want more than a dance” I smirked as I slowly turned to face him, the boy from the bar but his jacket gone left with his hat and his beer at the bar
“Hi”
“Hi” I giggled lazily wrapping my arms around his neck and pressing my body tight to his so much I felt the cold sting of his belt through my dress “Handsome” I smiled
“You flatter me Baby” He smirked wrapping his arms around my waist his hands on the opposite hip guiding me as I danced our grinding only got more intense “I never caught your name?”
“I didn’t throw it.”
“Humm Guess you didn’t” he smirked stroking his hands down my ass
“Who needs the formalities? We're only dancing” I whispered playing with the tiny thin hair on his chin
“Maybe I think we’ve danced enough” he whispered touching his nose to mine
“You can never dance enough” I smirked running my hand down his chain and letting my body slip down his by the time my hand met the buttons on his shirt my head was at his belt but he forced me back to his eyes “Will you tell me your name?”
“Why? Do we need the formalities?” he smirked back “Benny. Benny Watts”
“Benny. Benny. Benny” I giggled nuzzling into his neck
“Do I get to know about you?” he whispered pulling us even closer
“Y/n”
“Y/n” he smirked “A name as beautiful as the rest of you” He cooed
“You flatter me” I smiled taking his hand and spinning out and he quickly spun me back into his chest
“Come and stay in my room tonight”
“What?”
“Come up and stay in my hotel room tonight.”
“Oh? And do what?”
“More than dance baby” he smirked
“Okay” I smiled
“Yeah?”
“Yeah” I giggled
“Come on” He smirked we grabbed our stuff and he wrapped his arm around my waist and tugged me through the hotel and up to one of the bedrooms, it was an impressive room and I giggled and collapsed on the bed. “Comfy baby?” he smirked
“I didn’t know I was in a hotel”
“Didn’t you?” he asked
“No” I giggled
“You do know you in Las Vegas right?”
“Am I?” I giggled “Cosmic”
“I think you need to get to bed.” he said going through his bag “Here you can borrow my shirt tonight,” he said handing over a shirt from his bag “Get yourself to bed,”
“Will you come and cuddle?”
“Absolutely baby” he smirked stripping off and climbing in the bed as I did too “Come on bed”
“Okay” I giggled cuddling up to him and I fell asleep almost immediately.

Hi hi, hope you're doing well!! Wanted to ask if you could explain how you pick colours! They're always so appealing to look at... (If you could also explain how you pick blush colours it'd be great! I never manage to pick good ones, no matter how hard I try :'))
hi anon, i'm doing fine!! it's summer right now where i live and that's healing all my problems (◡ ω ◡)
i have recorded the process of some of my drawings and everything is posted in my youtube channel (in twitter too), so i'll drop the link here and try my best to explain the coloring part to you. the short answer is that none of the colors you see in my drawings are similar to those i initially picked.
i try to keep my lineart loose but i pay attention to the outlines so i can quickly select the outer parts, invert the selection and fill it with the bucket tool. my base colors are all 100% opaque and i don't use any fancy brushes here.
as to how i pick colors, i never use the color picker tool, i eyeball everything. that's important for me because i tend to make all of them warmer: the greens are dark yellows, the pinks are light reds, and everything that's close to blue is very desaturated. i do this even for drawings that turn out much different later, unless i have a very specific vibe in mind from the beginning. i also never use pure whites for anything, and if something is black i make it part of the lineart.
Tumblr media
then i always color my lineart!! there's no trick to that, the layer is in normal mode and i just paint it with a darker color than what's below it. i usually add the shadows and highlights at this stage of the drawing too. you're going to kill me for this but shade with gray set in color burn or linear burn (never multiply). i just don't want to think about color variety at this stage because it makes things more difficult for later. sometimes i add textures and some basic color correction here (curves, color balance, layers set in overlay, etc.) but i mostly leave that for the next part.
as to how i choose blush colors, i usually pick the base color and move it towards the saturated end of the color wheel, and a bit more pink. sometimes i add a multiply layer and airbrush hot red over the base colors at low opacity. coloring the lineart with hot colors surrounding the blush areas helps a lot too :)
i also almost always duplicate the lineart, blur it and set it in linear burn (i paint this layer in a light gray). this adds a lot of depth to the drawing, especially if later combined with the bloom effect.
Tumblr media
the key to why the colors in my art pop so much is that i don't enjoy drawing as much as i enjoy postprocessing pictures 😂🤣😅👌✌️👍 once i'm satisfied with the "base" colors i merge everything except the background, open a new canvas and go crazy with filters and textures. that's why i use ibispaint X even if i do the lineart elsewhere (krita), and even if it works a bit wonky with big canvases.
i do something different for each drawing here, so first i'm going to explain my reasoning so that you understand my process: i used to have a problem of using very strong colors that overshadowed my beloved lineart into which i had put a lot of effort, so my goal nowadays is to make everything look less contrasted without losing the visual impact of saturated colors. that way the lineart remains a strong point and not just a way to separate one color from another.
what i usually do is duplicate the new merged layer, set it to exclusion mode, add a gradient map and play with the opacity. then i duplicate that and do the same thing with another gradient or another blending mode. i tend to add like 3-6 layers of bullshit over my drawings, including textures and other filters like "bloom" or "sharpen". i understand everything that's going on there but i don't think too deeply about it, i just pick whatever looks best.
for the final touches i always pull up the saturation and contrast (since a lot of it gets lost in the process), and i usually have to manually change some colors (ibispaint X has a filter to do that) or tweak the curves. then i add chromatic aberration, noise set to overlay and little polka dots set to linear dodge.
Tumblr media
here are some comparisons of the before and after of recent drawings. the 1st one is very subtle, but you can clearly see how much warmth and depth it gains it gets after all the postprocessing. the 2nd one is so different that i understand why you're curious about how i pick colors. i don't think i can replicate that look just from picking nice colors, there's a lot more going on!! the 3rd one personally feels like it had potential lost (i liked the yellow highlights), but the colors were too strong and all over the place, so the finished result looks more intimate and calm and i like it a lot more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
thank you for the interest anon, i'm very happy that you like the way i color things and i hope i have explained myself. good luck with your own journey!!

HLVRAI Oneshot: Chalk
My muse continues to be a stuggle, Snowcon followers I am sorry XD
Word count: 2687
Summary: Kids were easy to be around. Their minds were simple, focused on entertaining themselves and being happy. It was something Benrey could relate to. But sometimes they could be so damn observant…
“You love dad, don’t you?”
“uhhh, sounds kinda cringe bro.”
The warm, summer winds blew through the surprisingly quiet neighborhood. Faint sounds of children laughing could be heard, most likely in the park not too far away, and the scent of smoke wafted off the barbeque Gordon was currently cooking food on.
All and all, a pleasantly calm day. It was one that he could enjoy with his son-
“hey, hey, you wanna play some tic tac toe?”
And Benrey.
The duo were both seated on the pavement not too far away, drawing on the ground with pieces of chalk that were all sorts of colours. Benrey was wearing a rather large hoodie with some game logos and stickers plastered across it, and his security helmet of course. From his position, Gordon could see that Joshua had drawn several stars, a rainbow, and several other miscellaneous drawings. Benrey had, after being scolded several times to not eat the chalk, drawn what appeared to be colourful smears across the ground, mixing and blending them together.
It sort of reminded Gordon of Benrey’s sweet voice, the blues that were present and the general colour gradient. He was glad to see everything was calm, nothing bad had happened, but still felt the urge to check.
“You two still holding up good?”
“Yeah dad!”
“we’re just doodlin’ passports over here, bro. josh dude gave himself a neat stache.”
“It’s a rainbow mustache that’s extra swirly.” The young boy sagely nodded. “Benrey says it needs glitter though to look super nice.”
“gotta make it sparkly like your personality, little dude.”
Joshua grinned and started laughing while Gordon could not stop himself from smiling at the rather wholesome sight. While Benrey was his typical somewhat apathetic self, his words were far more cohesive, and he sounded less… flustered when speaking. His words were less frantic, far calmer.
Like he was truly relaxed.
“Alright.” Gordon nodded as he turned his attention back to the barbeque, not wanting the veggies to burn while he was not paying attention. “Benrey just… keep not eating the chalk, please.”
He did not notice the wink that the ex-security guard sent Joshua, nor did he witness Benrey pull out half a piece of blue chalk from his pocket and carefully crunch into it.
Blue tasted the best, it was like gatorade.
The young boy laughed once more before returning to his doodling. Benrey looked at it for a moment, noticing the blue, orange, and yellow pieces of chalk that were clearly intended for whatever it was he was drawing, but Benrey decided not to question it at the moment.
Joshua would more than likely ramble about it at some point, the kid was full of all sorts of words and tended to ramble to whoever was nearby. It was pretty amusing to listen to and gave him all sorts of insight on both Gordon and what the pair’s home life had been like before he crashed into it.
Literally.
Breaking into someone’s apartment at around three in the morning was not the best of plans, especially since it ended with Gordon bringing a bat down on the top of his helmet. Not that Benrey had been hurt of course.
Seeing Gordon’s dismay and shock as the bat snapped in half and flew off to the side, shattering one of the windows, was hilarious.
Had that been Benrey’s fault?
Maaaaybeeee.
Either way, months had passed since that point. Months spent working on building up Gordon’s trust in him, learning how to do human things like buy groceries that were not just soda.
A shame since Benrey loved that gamer fuel.
Getting to know Joshua had been… nice, too. The young boy never had the same anxieties that his father felt, never worried about whether Benrey would hurt him or not. He had been happy to make a new friend who was willing to listen to him ramble and play games with him. Of course, Gordon had not been happy with the developing friendship between the two, but as the months passed…
Gordon had gone from constantly hovering over them, to occasionally checking in on them, and then finally to trusting Benrey.
Trusting him to watch over his son and not hurt him.
The first time Benrey had noticed this change and realized what it meant; it had been impossible to stop the bright pink orbs that left his mouth. Fortunately, Gordon had not noticed the sweet voice, but Joshua had.
Joshua, who had later told him how pretty the “glowing balls” looked and how it resembled a very nice, peachy pink.
Kids could be so blunt sometimes, but Benrey appreciated it. He appreciated how simple and straightforward their minds could be and while curiosity was a constant factor when dealing with a kid, it was an enjoyable part of talking to them.
Like making a baking soda volcano on the ceiling of Gordon’s apartment.
Fun times, especially with the bout of strangely quietly screaming he had gotten in response.
Benrey didn’t know Gordon’s face could turn that red.
He let out an amused chuckle and drew some loops on the ground with his mostly eaten piece of chalk. He loved getting Gordon so riled up, hearing the insults that were thrown his way and how the agitated man would run his hands through his hair, ruffling it up.
Loved watching his face flush with anger, how his eyes shined with rage…
Unnoticed to Benrey, several pink orbs floated out of his mouth as he sighed wistfully. When he realized what he had done, clamping a hand over his mouth to prevent any more from appearing, he noticed that Joshua was staring at him, grinning.
Shit, one of the things he was actually scared of.
“heyyyyy little joshie buddy, what’s with that look? kinda… kinda looks like a schemin’ look.”
Joshua’s smile grew a bit wider. “Maaaybe.”
“... kid you’re scarin’ me.”
The only response he got to that was a giggling laugh that was part cackle, which left him feeling no less concerned than he had previously been. Benrey sighed and refocused on his random doodling. Yep, just going to let this topic drop-
“You love dad, don’t you?”
Shit.
Benrey looked up and pretended he could not feel the sweat running down his face. Everything was totally fine, he was cool as a cucumber, kid couldn’t suspect a thing…
“uhhh, sounds pretty cringe, bro.” He shrugged. “and gay.”
“Dad likes all sorts of people!” Joshua huffed. “He likes gay!”
“... that wasn’t-uh... never mind.” Oh fuck, was he blushing? He hoped not. “still cringe, not a pro gamer move.”
“You blushing when dad says something nice about you isn’t cringe.” Joshua bluntly stated. “It’s cute, and grandpa Coomer says gay stuff is cute! Grandpa Coomer’s super smart so it’s gotta be true!”
“we-well it’s… uh…” Shit, he had no response to that.
“Dad makes you happy.” Joshua continued to say, now refocusing on his doodle on the ground and Benrey could now see that it was a family of three people. One blue, one orange, and the smallest one was yellow. “Even if you’re weird sometimes, and pour milk in the cereal box before you eat it-”
“fruit loops get super dusty and i wanted to make soup.”
“Cereal isn’t soup!”
“it is if you’re brave enough.” The change in topic was helping Benrey relax, tension leaving his shoulders as his absent-minded smile returned to his face. Nothing to stress over, everything was chill and-
“So when are you and dad going to go out on a date?”
Nope no more chill nope nope nope-
A date? Benrey had no clue how dates worked, or how they were supposed to work. Besides, his attempts at “flirting” were rarely successful and only seemed to wind Gordon up and, as much as he enjoyed watching the results, sometimes Gordon’s remarks would… sting.
They would make him hurt, cause him to cringe and recoil from the conversation. Not that such a thing had happened recently, but Benrey knew how unpredictable Gordon’s mood and temperament could be at times.
“sounds super cringe.” Was the response Joshua got, combined with a tense shrug. “like-like over nine thousand level cringer-”
“That’s an oooooooold reference.” The young boy said as he stuck his tongue out at Benrey. “And you’re changing topics again!”
Oh god, there were now hearts scribbled around the doodles that were clearly supposed to be him and Gordon. What could he say, what was he supposed to say? That he was terrified of fucking up the “Good Ending” he had finally achieved? That he did not want to risk destroying the relationship he currently had with Gordon?
The months of hard work he had put into fixing the damage that had been done because of that stupid, stupid game-
He felt the chalk in his grip crumble and break apart due to how tightly he was holding it, but the thing that snapped him out of his reverie was the sensation of a smaller hand grabbing onto his.
Joshua?
Indeed, Joshua had scooted over and reached out to hold onto his hand. He looked up at Benrey with a warm smile on his face.
A smile he had seen many times from the boy’s father…
“If it’s hard to say it, why don’t you show you!” He suggested, still smiling that same smile. “Dad’ll understand! He gets my drawings all the time!”
Benrey felt his lips quirk up into the faintest hint of a grin at the suggestion, the tips of sharp teeth glinting in the sunlight. “you sure that’s a pro gamer move?”
“Yup! It’s super pro gamer!”
“well, guess i’ve got no choice.” Benrey joked while rolling his tense shoulders. “joshie, toss me that orange one.”
“And blue?”
“you know it.”
As the sun started to descend from its zenith, shadows beginning to stretch across the pavement in front of the apartment building, Gordon finished up his cooking. Everything was stacked on plates and brought over to his, thankfully, ground level room and placed inside. Once that was taken care of, he went about cleaning everything up and putting his barbeque away.
He was so focused on cleaning everything up that he did not notice the large drawing that was progressively covering the pavement thanks to Benrey. It was only after all signs of his cooking had been neatly cleaned up or put away that he turned his attention to Joshua and his… “roommate”.
If he could call Benrey that.
“Time to head inside!” Gordon called out as he walked towards the duo. His walking slowed down as he noticed that Benrey was crouched in front of a large piece of chalk art. His eyes narrowed in confusion.
Huh, he had not expected Benrey to be the artistic type, aside from spitting balls into the air.
Joshua jumped up and rushed to his side, grabbing onto his arm, and tugging him towards Benrey.
“C’mon dad, look! It’s so cool!”
“Alright, slow down there Joshie.” Gordon chuckled as he allowed his son to pull him towards the art. “It wouldn’t be good if… I… tripped….”
His words slowed and eventually stopped entirely as he finally took in the sight of what Benrey had created and it was…
Beautiful.
Very abstract in nature, a swirl of colours that seemed to form shapes. Light blues and yellows and greens all circling and intermingling with a core that consisted of a darker, richer blue and orange.
Swirls and lines that worked together to create faces. His own and Benrey’s. He could also make out what appeared to be Coomer and Bubby in the background, green and light blue seeming to dance together like the pair would, and that warm yellow that encircled them all, Tommy, uniting them.
What…
As he leaned closer, Gordon noticed smaller details. How Benrey had drawn his hair to be similar to what it truly looked like despite the effort it must have taken. The dark shadows that had been scratched under the ex-guard’s eyes, the white and yellow that mixed together, an attempt to recreate his glowing irises.
How monstrous he looked overall and yet there was a softness in the lines, and the trail of bubbles that left the drawing’s mouth.
All a familiar pink.
Benrey was not as slick as he thought he was, Gordon had noticed the colourful orbs on multiple occasions before he had successfully stopped them. He had never pushed the boundary and asked what they meant since Benrey always seemed so embarrassed, but now…
“What’s pink translate to?” He asked, crouching down beside Benrey and bumping his shoulder against the other man.
Benrey was silent, contemplating what to say and how to say it, before he finally mumbled out the answer. “.... s’makes me think.”
“... Pink means you think?”
“yeah,” Benrey shifted and looked up at Gordon, eyes still cast in shadow. “think of you.”
Gordon’s mind drew a blank at that answer, uncertain of how to respond, but before he could even attempt to get the words out the other man took his chance.
He leaned towards Gordon and pressed a gentle kiss against his lips.
The gesture did not linger, but as Benrey leaned back Gordon could still feel the warmth of the kiss. He reached up and pressed his fingers against his lips and quietly wondered if he was dreaming.
Benrey sighed, a stream of pink sweet voice floating into the air and waited for Gordon to speak. It felt like an eternity had passed before the other man finally responded to the gesture, voice cracking.
“Y-You… really? Me? What? But… but you and I-”
“had problems?” Benrey interrupted, eyes fixating on the ground as he squeezed his hands. “no shit. feetman, if-if you don’t wanna-”
“Who said I didn’t?” At that, he looked up and stared at Gordon in surprise. “I was just surprised since you hadn’t said anything about that.”
“i joked about putting our minecraft beds together, bro.” Benrey bluntly stated, causing Gordon to flail as he struggled to explain himself.
“WELL YEAH! But… but I thought you were joking and shit-”
“Dollar for the swear jar!” Joshua cheerfully interrupted, making his dad groan.
“Okay, dollar later, but first,” He focused his attention back on Benrey, noticing how the other man’s cheeks had darkened and how he kept fidgeting. “... You sure?”
“wouldn’t have asked if i wasn’t.” Benrey quietly commented, now finally looking back at Gordon. “psh, pretty cringe doubting me-”
But he was cut off when Gordon leaned forward and returned the kiss. Joshua cheered and Benrey, completely caught off guard, fell backwards which caused a chain reaction of Gordon stumbling, fumbling, and nearly landing on top of him.
Gordon’s hands rested on the pavement beside Benrey’s shoulders as Gordon stared into the other man’s eyes. Both were blushing at this point, and a constant stream of pink sweet voice was leaking into the air.
“U-Uh-”
“dude, you gonna-”
“Are you guys gonna kiss again?” Joshua’s innocent question snapped the pair out of their stupor and they scrambled to get back up.
“W-Well, probably-”
“later, joshie bro.” That casual smile was back on Benrey’s face, an attempt at trying to look calm despite how much he was blushing. “we gotta… uh… get the meats’n stuff-”
“Yeah, like Arby’s!” Gordon nervously added. “But first…”
He quickly snapped several photos of the drawing Benrey had done on the pavement, also making sure to get several of Joshua’s in the process. Hey, he wanted to be able to look back on it in the future, plus he was certain some asshole would wash it off the pavement soon enough.
Besides, there was no way in hell he wanted Benrey’s hard work, one of the few examples of hard work, to go to waste.
“Okay, now we can get the meats.”
Joshua cheered and raced over to the apartment while Benrey joined his side, an arm brushing against him. In response, Gordon linked an arm with his and smiled at the other man.
“wow, that… that’s pretty gay, bro. You gayman now?”
“Totally.” Gordon rolled his eyes as he walked arm and arm back to the apartment with Benrey.
                                    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I continue to be on my bullshit while my muse demands domestic fluff for these two. I suppose it’s a good thing for my followers who are in this fandom XD
I hope you guys enjoyed reading!

took a look at Cells at Work (an anime which imagines the human body as a city populated by anime-trope characters representing different types of cell - the MCs are a red blood cell [delivery girl] and a neutrophil white blood cell [knife-armed soldier]). cute concept, reasonable delivery.
what i don’t get is... the drawings are pretty good. but the shading keeps verging, inexplicably, this awful middle ground between cel-shading and actual smooth painted shading. with like, bright white specular highlights in this slightly blurred white. which I’ve also seen done by Disney, to equally bad effect. so please allow a very petty complaint...
Tumblr media
the actual drawing here is like... stereotypical design but the forms are solid, there are some nice details on the clothing, fiddly stuff like hands are drawn well. but the specular highlights and blush really detract from that drawing. it actually isn’t as bad on the arm where it’s a bit less blurred, but anyway here’s a quick edit to remove that
Tumblr media
I would argue that this looks a lot better - which means the colourist spent time and effort to make the picture look worse. Deliberate? Idk!
I don’t think putting specular highlights in cel-shading is intrinsically a terrible idea, it’s more a matter of the way it’s done here.
anyway this reminded me of a poster I saw while obtaining a copy of Fantasia:
Tumblr media
now I look at it again, disney’s shading here is a lot more competent than the Cells at Work screenshot. there’s a lot smoother blending (possibly too much!) and it uses actually colour-appropriate specular fresnel reflections and coloured ambient light in the shadows, but it still looks ugly as all hell and I hate it. (also way to include the racist mushroom caricatures on the poster guys)
if you’re gonna cel shade, commit to it and cel shade! and if you’re not, but still want something stylised in the cel-shading space... you can absolutely make it work. this official painting of Zero for example looks very nice:
Tumblr media
this isn’t cel shaded - although it has pretty harsh shadow edges, there’s clear variation of tone both inside and outside the shadows. there’s some subtle variation of hue as well.
so what’s the difference between this and the Fantasia poster? well it’s using nice desaturated colours for one. even this similar painting of Two, whose outfit is a lot more saturated...

...still uses quite a desaturated blue outside of the brightest highlights. so that’s one thing.
another is that the Fantasia characters are not in the semi-realistic style of anime, they’re very clearly cartoon proportions, but I bet you could do a painting of Mickey or Bacchus that doesn’t have that weird glossy sheen and too-smooth texture or whatever it is that makes it look so bad. though maybe it’s nothing technically to do with the portrayal of light, but to do with the mess of oversaturated colours... maybe if you replaced the blue background with a grey or white it would look fine!
still, that’s a poster. in actual animation terms, a Disney production which uses similar ‘blurred cel shading’ style is Treasure Planet:
Tumblr media
this admittedly looks better than most of the examples so far imo, but I reckon this would still look better if they just stuck to cel-shading. the gradient looks like, well, a digital gradient: it doesn’t look more like how light would fall on the surface, and using it means they can’t really use shading to pick out details that aren’t revealed by the linework. it’s not nearly as bad as the Cells at Work example because at least the colours work and the gradient looks better that just, cel shading with a gaussian blur on it, but it still seems like a way to detract from the underlying drawings.
anyway i don’t have a conclusion to all this except, pitfall to avoid...

⇨ How to Add Color to a Black and White Image: A Tutorial, Recoloring Tips and Other Random Sh*T by ME! If you’ve been following me for any amount of time or have looked at my original posts, you probably already know that I  absolute love to colorize black and white photos and recoloring. I needed to do a tutorial so here you go, have fun!
Examples: 1, 2, 3, & 4
Program: Adobe Photoshop CC 2018.
I’ll be using an already colorful image of Red Velvet’s Joy from the Summer Magic teasers. I personally prefer to use a Gradient Map to turn images to black and white instead of Black & White adjustment because Gradient Maps leave more of a dramatic contrast but it’s up to personal taste.
Tumblr media
After removing the color from the image, create a new Solid Color layer. I always start with the skin, do everything in between, then end with the background. Once the layer for the base skin appears, select the Layer Mask and invert it by pressing Ctrl-I or Image > Adjustments > Invert. Set the layer blending mode to Color. Making sure to still be on the Layer Mask, start drawing over the skin with White as your foreground color. Do not draw the eyes.
Tumblr media
TIP: Lower the hardness of the brush when going around the hairline and around the ears, if hair strands are near it.  If there’s skin showing through hair or if the person has bangs, lower the opacity to 20-30% and draw over it.
Tumblr media
Now to add more warmth and detail to the skin. I start with a blush, then I add shadows and highlights. Set the brush hardness to 0%. Create a new Solid Color layer with the same color used for the skin but nudge it towards a warmer tone. Once the layer appears, select the Layer Mask and invert it by pressing Ctrl-I or Image > Adjustments > Invert. Set the layer blending mode to Color Burn. To make it easier and avoid drawing outside the skin, holding command, click on the Layer Mask from the base skin layer. With the selection, go to the Blush layer and paint.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HIGHLIGHT: I only add a highlight to the forehead, nose bridge, top of the lip, and under the eyebrows. I take the same color as the skin and move it closer to white, set the layer mode to Soft Light. Feather the layer mask to blend it better.
EYEBROWS: I use the Polygonal Lasso tool to select the eyebrows. With a Solid Color layer set on Soft Light, I use a rich brown color (5b2b22) and fill it, fading a bit to fit Korean beauty I guess and feather the layer mask.
Tumblr media
LIPS: Repeat the same steps used to do the eyebrows but this time for the lips.
EYES: Solid Color Layer > Whatever color you want the eyes > Invert Layer Mask > Draw the Eyes > Set Blending Mode to whatever looks best.  I used Soft Light.
⇨ LAYERS SO FAR Before you think something like “Wow, Nicolle! Joy isn’t that pale, stop whitewashing!” Adjustments exist for a reason, but I’ll show those later or in part two, if it gets too long.
Tumblr media
NOW FOR THE HAIR! A lot of you fools like to edit idols with different hair colors and I support. Now I will teach you a nice, cleaner way to make it look like your idol’s hair is as natural looking as possible with an unnatural, fake color.
Solid Color Layer > Multiply or Color (Or whatever looks best with the color you pick > Select the hair. Use Select and Mask to try to make it as accurate as possible but we’re going to be drawing with the Layer Mask layer, so don’t worry to much. With the hair selection, Invert the mask to reveal the color. Ugly, right?
Tumblr media
Don’t worry, the Soft Round brush is your friend. Make the brush very large near the hairline and hide the rough edges. Make the brush smaller and go around the edges and blend them away. Once you hide all the ugly, harsh parts, lower the opacity of the brush to 20% and paint over the baby hairs, the sideburns, and big chunks of hairs that show the background through the strands.
Tumblr media
If the person in your image is wearing hair accessories, use the Polygonal Lasso to select the accessories and hide them with 100% Hardness. Try to not be sloppy. Take your time. The great thing about Solid Color layer is that you can always change the color at any time!
Tumblr media
BACKGROUND: Same as everything above. Solid Color layer > Color Mode > Draw to show, draw to hide. Boom, DONE. A lot different than the B&W, right? Still UGLY! Add adjustments. Add WARMTH TO IDOLS! Bump up Vibrance and Saturation, Photo Filters, Color Lookups, Color Balance, all those.
Tumblr media
If you’re like me and feel ugly without textures, add them. I always use a small “3D” effect and white specks on my edits because that’s how I like my stuff. Do whatever you like with your work to make it yours.
⇨ FINISHED PRODUCT

Message me if you have any questions or feel stuck. I’m sorry for any spelling mistakes, I’m stupid. Good luck! Tag me if you ever use this tutorial!

hi! how did you edit the makeups on your love nikki stylings?
Hey! Thanks for the question! It’s pretty easy, actually. The short answer is “The Magic of Photoshop,” but I’ll stick a long answer under the cut (in case someone wants to try this themselves…)It looks long when I write it out, but I was knocking these out in less than twenty minutes once I had the process down!
Step 1: Take a blank Nikki and change her to the skin tone you want and the makeup you want. I also change her hair to Pristine Dancer because her bangs are out of her face. You could also use Free Dancer….that’s about it for bangless hair……hmmm…….
Tumblr media
Step 2: There’s probably a more technologically savvy way to do it, but I just take a screenshot and email the screenshot to myself
ᕕ( ᐕ )ᕗ
Step 3: Open the file in Photoshop. Create a new folder for all the sexy, sexy layers about to unfold on this masterpiece, to contain the chaos. Create a new layer, set its blending mode to multiply. Color pick from the lightest section on the neck and fill the layer with that color. The whole picture will now be tinted a lovely dark brown.
Tumblr media
Step 4: That’s not gonna work, obviously, so I create a layer mask on the skin tint layer. Masks sound scary but they are very easy. They let you cut out selections of a layer without making it permanent, in case you:a) fuck up your cut-out somewhereb)want to change your cut-out laterc) want to cut out the same section to use on a different layerSo I fill the layer mask (not the layer itself!) with black, which will make it look like the layer is empty again, because I just concealed the whole thing with a mask. Bye bye brown tint!
Tumblr media
Step 5: Still on the layer mask, I go in and carefully color in just the face with white, which will re-reveal the brown color I laid down earlier, but just on her face. She now looks darker! But she also looks very strange!
*note: after this, you’ll also have a layer mask you can just copy without having to do this every time, which saves time
Tumblr media
Step 6: Working now on the layer itself (shouldn’t need to mess around with the layer mask again until the end), color over her eyes with white. Because this layer is set on multiply, her eyes will simply reappear like magic~ If her mouth is open, you can color the inside of her mouth with white too.
Tumblr media
Step 7: From here, I just work on tweaking the little things. For any new layers created after this, I turn into clipping layers, which will only let me draw on the area I have set on the base layer (in this case, Nikki’s face)
Tumblr media
Step TWEAK: I use the blur tool heavily from here on out. Nikki’s eyes on her pale skin makeups just kind of…blend into her skin, which looks good on pale skin, buuuut doesn’t work so well on dark skin, so I like to draw on shadows to the tops of her eyes on a new multiply layer to help them blend in too. On an overlay layer, I use a low opacity red-orange gradient to emphasize her blush. I also draw in her nose using the same blushy color (but blur the absolute hell out of it or it just looks completely obvious), adjust her lip color and eyeshadow if applicable, and throw in another low opacity gradient (light yellowor orange) in the middle of her face to give it a bit of depth.WHEW.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 9: If the color of her face isn’t quite matching up to her skin at this point from blending layer abuse, I’ll finish it off with a color correction adjustment layer.
Tumblr media
Step 10: I duplicate the original screenshot and copy over the layer mask from her face and drag it into the folder I created in the beginning. Now I have a totally independent floaty face I can stick anywhere I want.
Tumblr media
Step 11: (Technically optional from here on out, but why wouldn’t you at this point??) I take a screenshot of an outfit I want to give this new makeup to, with the skin tone set to the same color as the new makeup. I import this into Photoshop via the very technologically advanced process I used in step 2.
Tumblr media
Step 12: I drag the independent floaty face folder into the new image and duplicate the folder, before merging that newly duplicated folder. I then drag the old layer mask from the original folder onto my one-layer-floaty-face. (You can just make a layer mask for a folder, but I like doing things this way because it applies the mask when you merge a folder, which means I won’t accidentally reveal brown tinted background if I go hog wild with my brush in a minute).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step DONE: Now you can edit your layer mask to go around the new hair, et voila! You have a new, beautifully styled, dark skinned babe!

Untitled Mermaid AU Fic?
I was inspired by @arcanedrabbles Siren AU and wrote a tail, tale of my own. I look forward to reading more of The Captain’s Tale! Its very cute!! This does not have sirens and pirates, but mermaids are close too right? (contains a small apprentice insert with Julian but hardly any details of her are mentioned) Not finished!
Part 1.2 and Part 2
Ava walks along the edge of the Wounded Coast, a dangerous cliffside with angry, relentless waves beating against the tired rocks. She wandered too far from the beach again today. The crowds never fail to displease her and push her away, only allowing quiet, stolen moments at the beach in the early hours of the mornings she is able to visit on. Vesuvian waters are bitter cold in the winter, but with scorching summers the place becomes a famous hotspot for the locals that sadly leave little room for privacy. So she drifted away from the crowd and ended up here.
The Coast, however, with its unsafe terrain, leave only the stupid or the brave to test its safety. The tall cliffs jut every which way at varying heights, only adding to its danger and beauty of the land. Below holds foaming waves sure to pull you under if you fall with little chance at escape, as if the sea itself wishes not to release you from its embrace. A narrow path winds down closer to the water that which Ava stands on, blinking furiously out of a daydream to find herself here.
She looks up and see the edges of the cliffs above her, rather than below her feet one would normally peer from. The ledge she occupies barely allows a person to walk along, some sections requiring hugging the wall to continue as it winds lower and lower to meet the deep blue water.
Worried, and shaking her head vigorously as if that will tell her brain to pay more attention, she pivots around to ascend back up and set course for home. The sun greets high in the sky and casts no shadows as she walks. Mindlessly, she starts to sing a wordless tune.
And swears she hears a harmonizing voice singing back at her.
Confused, she quickly stops. The voice in question quits a few beats after, as if startled by the sudden pause.
She resumes where she left off, and sure enough the voice returns to sing with her. The sound is beautiful, a smooth voice that makes her only want to listen to its sweet song, but knows if she stops it will too.
The sound comes from further down the path. Who could be all the way down there, she thinks. Those who travel here have near nothing to find and return home with, or never return at all. This place was once rumored of being haunted, a gossip in town spreading one day as a young couple runs back to town, terrified. Its since been ignored, but remains a commonly avoided spot with good reason, especially fearful in the hours of the night.
They do not appear in distress, whoever it is, but in the back of her mind knows this is a horribly idiotic idea.
She’s not been known to be the wisest person.
Once again she turns back around to continue on the path she started, still singing her tune and carefully listens to find the source of the voice. It seems to drown out the waves themselves, its usual noise only a distant echo. Warm, rich, unintentionally inviting, it beckons her onward.
At this level, holes have been dug into the cliffs themselves as if carved. The water changes elevation during certain times of the year with summers low enough that these peek out without being covered it seems.
Without warning, a merciless wave crashes near the side she stands on, but nonetheless startles her enough that her foot slips off the narrow ledge, pulling her down into the waiting waters below.
She's able to breach the surface after landing in the salty water just before it drags her back under, stealing one last gulp of air before it does. This is it, she thinks to herself, I was stupid enough to wander off this much, down this far. Oh, how will I tell the shopkeep?
She struggles for as long as she can muster. The ocean is relentless in its eagerness, a new visitor to stay with her. Its strength too much to handle alone, dragging her further and further to her new awaited bed to sleep in. Closing her eyes, the remainder of her stolen breathe pushes out of her lungs in a burning gasp, bubbles helplessly floating up as she sinks. Her consciousness starts to slip away to give her some sort of ending peace. She thinks before being swallowed in darkness that a hand closes around her upper arm...
~
She wakes to find her back laying flat against stone, her body soaking wet and only slightly shivering as she opens her eyes. Her lungs burn, and her stomach decides to cough up sea water as she quickly turns over while her body curls in on itself in pain. She takes deep, agonizing breaths and looks around, a dark cave welcoming her back to consciousness. She can see the blue sky through the mouth of the cave, the sun slightly lower than before but the waves angry in her surprising escape.
...How did she escape?
Ava looks around again, only to find nothing around but a pair of glowing eyes staring straight at her through the barely-lit cave. A small scream rips from her throat before immediately causing her to cough again, salt water still lingering and wrecking her voice. She then backpedals on her hands and feet toward the exit, towards the freedom and escape from this place after gaining a second chance.
In her panic the alluring voice from before begins to softly hum at her, and she freezes. Its melody, now heard by itself, sounds melancholic. Sad. The pitch rings a deep, rich tone that brings her to the verge of tears in its unspoken story.
She slightly relaxes and finds the eyes blinking at her, seemingly approaching her as the voice grows ever louder. Her eyes threaten to spill tears as fear, mixed with curious wonder, blurs her vision from the approaching entity. Ava closes her eyes to let them fall down her face, once again accepting the incoming meeting with death. She waits but it never comes. In fact, the voice hushed into silence and she dares open her eyes.
Blinking the rest of her tears away, and re-adjusting to the dim light of the cave, Ava finds herself staring face to face with a man.
A mess of wet auburn curls sits on this head, wild and seemingly impossible to tame. A portion hides his right eye as the other peers at her from merely a foot from her face. His grey eye is transfixed on her, seeming to peer directly into her soul itself. Sharp cheekbones are etched into his face while his lips are slightly agape in awe, sporting pearly white fangs as his teeth.
Fangs?
She blinks and finds them still there, in addition to gills slit into his neck and the ear not covered by his bright hair not resembling any human ear. She also notices him shirtless, body submerged in a pool within the cave that she lays next to.
His lips open wider to speak, in a voice that sounds like heaven itself, “Are you alright?”
She nods her head in acknowledgement, not feeling any worse except her upset stomach, burning lungs, and swirling mind. He smiles at her, exhaling a breathe she didn't realize he was holding.
“That was quite a fall you had. You almost didn’t make it out” he pauses, waiting for some other response. A sound. Ava does not speak, too stunned to form words as she stares.
He splashes the water in front of him onto her face, doing no harm as the clothes are still dripping wet. She blinks again and wipes her face with her hand to look back him.
“My name’s Julian, but some call me Ilya. May I ask for yours?” his dark eyebrow lifts in question.
“Ava.” she speaks quietly after an agonizing moment.
“Ava,” he repeats, testing the name on his tongue, and holds out a pale hand. Her name on his tongue melts her from its sound. “It's a pleasure to meet you.”
Cautiously she raises her hand to shake it, but immediately lets go at the touch of scales. He flinches and lowers his hand down to the edge of the still pool.
“Right, thats just a people thing I suppose. Worth a shot all things considering. There are, well, there are very strange mannerisms sometimes up there, I swear.”
“Who are you?” she tentatively asks, still unsure what to make of this entire situation.
A pause hangs heavy in the air before the man, Julian, raises his hand again to rest under his chin, cheek jutting up into an adorable pout.
“It might be easier to show you.”
“Show me? Show me what?”
He turns sideways and next to him emerges from the pool a brightly colored tail. Its hues gleam in oranges and reds, blending together to make a vibrant sunset color. It slowly fades darker as it travels toward his navel, a beautiful gradient of scarlet scales that are impossible to cast eyes away from. Ava cannot help but wonder its beauty reflected in sunlight. Its as if his entire being is begging for attention.
“Beautiful.” she finds herself saying, before bringing a hand to her mouth and holding it there, surprised to say aloud.
Julian blushes to match his scales, traveling from his cheeks to his ears and down his neck that he cannot hide.
“T-thank you.” he stammers, but submerges his tail back underneath the water.
“Are you a... siren?”
“I do not wish to eat you. I’ll spare your life this once.” he dodges the question grinning, sharp, white teeth clearly visible in the dark as he crosses his arms atop his chest.
Despite everything, she can clearly see through this lie and it shows plainly on her face. He exhales through his nose in a silent laugh.

Top Five iPhone Apps for Photo Editing
Growing up I wasn’t much into taking photographs of people, places or even family members. That all change when I become a parent and got into sports.  In the past, if you wanted to take really good quality photographs, you need an expensive camera and special software for editing.  But thanks to technology, iPhones, and apps that you can easily download, you longer need to be an expert and purchase expensive equipment.  So, I decided to check out photo editing apps on my iPhone and to my surprise, there are over one hundred apps on the app store that were free and some as much as seventy dollars.  I decided some research was needed to comb through all of the apps and find out which ones were the best.  Here are my results are the best apps for photo editing on an iPhone.
1.     Enlight  (iOS)
This app has the traditional editing tools and a variety of filters. There are various creative tools and special effects, you can turn a picture into a painting or a drawing giving a standard photo a unique design.  There are also drawing tools, text, borders, and frames to choose from. The app is not free but for only $3.99 you can’t go wrong and you won’t have to deal with ads.
2.     Snapseed
Snapseed is an all-purpose editing app that gives you precise control over color and exposure. The app can be used by serious photographers who like to have fun with their photos. The app can a vast range of editing tools that are easy to use. You can edit the exposure and color of the photos.  There is an option that lets you take your current photos and transform them into black & white. While the app is free the con is that there is no autosave.
3.     VSCO
VSCO is another app that lets you transform your current photos into black and white giving it a vintage look.  VSCO has many filters that can be adjusted to your style. There are many tools that let you adjust the exposure, contrast, sharpness, and clarity. If you are looking for an app that works well with Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/) this the one. You can download the app for free from the app store it only provides you with ten filters, you can purchase a yearly membership for $19.99 which gives you access to over 130 filters.
4.    YouCam Perfect (iOS)
If you are looking for the best app for your selfies, CNET.com picked YouCam Perfect for iOS. (https://www.cnet.com/topics/mobile-apps/best-mobile-apps-ios/best-photo-apps-for-iphone/) The app has many tools and features, it allows you to record selfie videos and instantly edit them. You can add fun stickers and backgrounds to your selfie. YouCam Perfect also you to crop your photo and you can even change your physical appearance by adding makeup such as lipstick or blush.  YouCam also makes it easy for all your selfies exportable to social media platforms.
5.     Superimpose X
Superimpose X app gives you the ability to create unique digital art of your photos by combining and blending images.  You can combine two or more photos to create a composite image. This apps also allows you to change the background of the original photo. There are various tools and filters that allow you to blur and give shadows to your photo. Other features include the ability to gradient and distort your image. For only $4.99 from the App Store Superimpose gives you the freedom to edit your photo for social platforms easily.

A Guide to Achieving the Perfect No-Makeup Makeup Look
Tumblr media
“Wow, your skin looks flawless!”
“You look very pretty today.”
“You look amazing without makeup!”
Little do they know that behind every “no makeup” selfie is the “no-makeup” makeup look!
Makeup is an art. The way you apply foundation, blend eye shadows, and wing the “winged liner” look isn’t easy. It takes immense effort and practice to get it right.
But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do to look a little like Kendall Jenner and Chrissy Teigen this winter. So, let’s take a look at how you can create this look:
Choose Your Moisturizer
Hold up! You can’t apply makeup without moisturizing your face first. The primer is important but moisturizing is essential.
We recommend going with Briseis Beauty’s Regenerative Moisturizer. You can also adopt a good nighttime routine so that you don’t have to worry about dry skin in the morning.
We recommend using a detoxifying clay mask at night, followed by a hydrating serum.
If you have eczema, Briseis Beauty’s eczema healing balm is perfect because it doesn’t contain any steroids.
Once your skin has been hydrated, it’s time to move onto the next step.
Choose Your Foundation
Go with a foundation that matches with your skin’s tone. Often times, people choose a shade lighter. The point is to make sure everything looks “natural” and balanced. You don’t want your face to look a shade lighter than your hands and neck.
Tumblr media
You can also go with a BB cream if foundation isn’t your thing. Foundation comes in different forms so it’s not compulsory to go with a liquid one.
Go with a Lip Tint or Balm
We recommend skipping lipstick altogether and going with a light lip tint or balm. You can go with the gradient lips look as well.
But if you really want to apply lipstick, we suggest going with this gorgeous Blush Nude shade or a Peachy Nude shade.
Eyeliner All the Way
No look is complete without eyeliner! But with the “no makeup” look, you need to be careful. Don’t apply it thickly. Make sure to go with a thin layer so it doesn’t look like you’ve applied anything to your eyes.
You also have the option of using neutral eye shadows. But this is an option. If you feel satisfied without using eye shadows, then voila, you’re done!
If you’re looking for the trendiest makeup and high-quality skincare products, shop now at Briseis Beauty! From lipsticks to vegan eyeshadows, hydrating serums and moisturizing makeup removers, they’ve got everything you’re looking for.

There are drugstore beauty products you use even though...
Tumblr media
There are drugstore beauty products you use even though they’re not as good as your luxury favorite simply because you’re trying to stick to a budget… and then there are the ones you use because they’re legitimately just as good. Sometimes $15-and-under beauty products beat the odds and just nail the formulations, colors, and packaging as well (if not better) than their pricier counterparts.
Over the years, I’ve come across a handful of these serums, mascaras, and shampoos—drugstore beauty products I continue to use even though I have access to the most luxurious brands in the world. This list is dedicated to those makeup, skincare, and haircare products (some new, some classic) I recommend giving a try. Below, find 15 high-end products I absolutely love, as well as 15 cheaper alternatives I stan just as much.
Every time I wash my blonde hair with this (delightfully non-stinky, non-drying) purple shampoo, people ask if I got my hair re-highlighted. As long as this beautifully packaged bottle is on the market, I’ll never spend more than $12 on toning shampoo again. I swear by glycolic acid treatments to keep dull skin and breakouts at bay, and this $15 toner proves you don’t need to blow your budget to reap the ingredient’s benefits. The product smells like subtly like flowers, looks beautiful on my countertop, and leaves my skin consistently radiant (I use it about four times a week after cleansing and before moisturizing). Sold. My nontoxic skincare guru Racheli (also a Who What Wear beauty writer) introduced me to this almost alarmingly affordable all-natural skincare trio, which is basically the perfect serum starter pack: a moisturizing hyaluronic acid serum, a retinol to fight wrinkles and breakouts, and a brightening vitamin C serum. These formulas are fast-absorbing and always leave my skin more radiant.  I discovered this blush-highlighter hybrid from ‘90s throwback brand Hard Candy a few years ago and keep coming back to it. The product is as pigmented as blushes four times the price, and the color gradient of bright coral to glowy pinkish-white leaves a luminous finish on the cheeks that I just can’t quit. I’ve been dealing with the worst dry patches lately, and this new exfoliator from Bliss works shockingly well to clear dead skin and flakiness, leaving only plump, hydrated skin. The product, which has a jelly-like texture, is really gentle, though—no harsh, irritating ingredients. Just skin-loving goodies like fruit enzymes, cellulose, vitamin B5, niacinamide, and sodium hyaluronate (aka hyaluronic acid). This sleeper hit dry shampoo has a super-fine mist that soaks up grease without leaving a thick white residue. I also love that it smells fresh but not too overpowering, so you don’t smell super strong all day like other pricier dry shampoos. I exclusively use cream highlighters, and I’m super impressed by these sticks by Burt’s Bees (which come in both highlighter and blush form). They have a clear hydrating core in the middle, so they blend beautifully and allow for a natural, lit-from-within glow. Makeup artists and beauty editors were all instantly obsessed when L'Oréal came out with this pretty pink tube of mascara last year. It leaves lashes fluffy and feathery thanks to its fiber wand, which delivers a ton of product to each lash without them looking clumpy. More proof that nontoxic skincare doesn’t have to be expensive. I keep this vegan and 99% natural rosewater spray in my travel bag because it’s super versatile. I use it to dampen my Beautyblender for makeup, as a micellar water to take off my makeup, and as a refreshing mist throughout the day. I basically only ever want to use liquid eye shadows that don’t require brushes to apply, and this unique pick is a favorite, drugstore or not. It’s essentially a lipgloss for your eye—apply it alone for a subtle wash of shimmer or on top of another eye shadow to make it glow. It goes on like a liquid but dries down for crease-free long wear. I’m obsessed with the shades, too, especially the luminescent yellow and pink. This is a little pricier for a drugstore buy, but what can I say? It’s French. This gentle cleansing lotion is one of my all-time favorite face washes—it leaves my skin clean but also unbelievably soft. Say hello to my holy-grail sunscreen (which, if you’ve read any of my SPF stories on Who What Wear before, you already know). This Japanese-made product is so thin, sheer, and fast-absorbing it’s hard to believe there’s any sunscreen in it at all (but trust me, there is!). Every time someone I know goes to Japan, I beg them to stock up. There’s simply no sunscreen in the U.S., not even the priciest ones, that I prefer over this. It’s simply silly to spend more than $8 on falsies when so many makeup artists and beauty editors agree these are the best. I love the flexible strip and natural fluttery look of these lashes, which are easy to apply, comfortable to wear, and just plain pretty. Expensive eye glosses, face glosses, and lipglosses are super trendy right now, but a $4 tube of Aquaphor will give you the same results. Not only does this stuff work wonders to heal dry lips, but you can also tap it on top of your cheekbones and over your eye shadow for that au courant dewy skin look everybody’s loving right now. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more sustainably made, nontoxic body lotion than EO’s. It’s made with 100% natural plant ingredients and fragrances (and smells incredible, like fresh lavender). It absorbs quicker than most natural lotions and leaves the skin impossibly smooth. Not to mention $15 for 32 ounces? Incredible. Next: I Never Used Eye Cream Until I Discovered This $7 One. There are drugstore beauty products you use even though they're not as good as your luxury favorite simply because you're trying to stick to a budget… and then there are the ones you use because they're legitimately just as good. Sometimes $15-and-under beauty products beat the odds and just nail the formulations, colors, and packaging as well (if not better) than their pricier counterparts. Over the years, I've come across a handful of these serums, mascaras, and shampoos—drugstore beauty products I continue to use even though I have access to the most luxurious brands in the world. As long as this beautifully packaged bottle is on the market, I'll never spend more than $12 on toning shampoo again. I swear by glycolic acid treatments to keep dull skin and breakouts at bay, and this $15 toner proves you don't need to blow your budget to reap the ingredient's benefits. I discovered this blush-highlighter hybrid from '90s throwback brand Hard Candy a few years ago and keep coming back to it. The product is as pigmented as blushes four times the price, and the color gradient of bright coral to glowy pinkish-white leaves a luminous finish on the cheeks that I just can't quit. I've been dealing with the worst dry patches lately, and this new exfoliator from Bliss works shockingly well to clear dead skin and flakiness, leaving only plump, hydrated skin. 5 Essential Beauty Tools for Beginners
The world of beauty can be overwhelming, to say the least. You want a foundation/blush/etc, but now you need to find the right shade, finish, ingredients, price. Finally, you find the perfect product, but now how do you apply it? The search now begins for the right applicator, which could probably be more daunting since brushes all seem to have pointless names (What the heck is an M 346? Does it really need to sound that complicated?) On the bright side, if you disregard all of the marketing and pressure to get a brush/tool for every part of your face, you’ll find that it’s quite simple to get the job done with just a few things. Here’s what you’ll need:
1. Eyeshadow Blending Brush
This is a must have for anyone, whether you’re a novice beauty enthusiast or seasoned makeup warrior. I’d rather wear no shadow than unblended shadow, so having a blending brush on hand is necessary when I’m doing my makeup. Having this tool will ensure that your eye look is seamless and clean, and will fuse your shadows together so that everything is a smooth gradient. I also use a blending brush to apply my pore minimizing powder to the sides of my nose and under my lower lash line since it can control exactly where it goes. The ones I like are the Wet n Wild Crease Brush and L.A.B. 2 Just Blending In.
2. Flat Eyeshadow Brush
This one is perfect for simply applying shadow to your lid, or highlighting your inner corners and brow bones. Find a brush that is flat but also slightly fluffy so that you can easily build up color. If you want to get even more use out of it, use a brush that has a slight angle to the bristles so you can contour your nose, as well. I have the Wet n Wild Large Eyeshadow Brush and the Royal & Langnickel Precision Angled Brush (I received this in my ipsy bag, although I can only find it on eBay).
3. Multi-Use Face Brush
Having a good face brush that can be used to apply powder, blush, highlighter, and contour will speed up your beauty ritual and save you $. This is where it gets a little more customized because everyone’s face is shaped differently. Based on the size of your face and how much control you want over where the product goes, you may need to do a little bit of research (YouTube is a good place to start). A smaller, tapered brush will allow the product to be placed exactly where you want and with more color payoff. A big fluffy brush will place the color on a larger area at once and look more diffused. I personally like the Luxie Precision Foundation Brush and the e.l.f. Small Tapered Brush.
4. Eyelash Curler
Unless you have Bambi lashes, then an eyelash curler is a good addition to your collection. Curling your lashes gives your look an extra boost, and can help your eyes appear bigger if that’s what you’re going for. It can seriously make a big difference in your look even if you’re going natural for the day. If you feel like you’ve been in a mascara slump, then an eyelash curler may be the solution. I have the Earth Therapeutics Curvaceous Eyelash Curler (but I only bought it because it is sold where I work and I used my employee discount.) It is important to read reviews on curlers before you buy. I recommend doing a little reading before snagging the first curler you see.
5. Touch Up Razor
This may not have been at the top of your list of tools-to-get, but I promise it makes a huge difference in grooming your brows AND upper lip hair. Yes, I actually double the use to get rid of noticeable upper lip hair. Instead of struggling with a tweezer to get the eyebrow shape you want, or trying to remove those small, hard-to-get hairs that are all around your brows, use a razor to quickly and painlessly clean up and shape them at the same time. I use the Sephora Collection Eyebrow Touch Up Razor Set. They may seem a little pricey, but together they last about a year if you take care of them.
Trust me, you don’t need 15 different beauty tools for every part of your routine. All you need are the essentials, and once you get more comfortable and creative with your beauty ritual, you can confidently add more to your arsenal. I hope you found this post helpful, and thank you for reading! ✨💚

Makeup Geek Matrix Palettes | Makeup Geek Eyeshadows
This review is for the Makeup Geek Matrix Mega Set ($220), which includes two magnetic palettes full of most of their single eyeshadows. I am also reviewing four additional single eyeshadows that were released as part of their recent rebrand but were not included in the palettes. The palettes can be purchased individually for $125 each. The individual matte shadows are $5.49 each while the foiled shadows are $7.99 each. Buying the whole set brings the price of the individual eyeshadows down to $3.93 each. Buying just one palette will bring the price down to $4.46 each. These are just rough calculations considering you also get the magnetic palettes. The point is, if you want a whole bunch of shades, it may be more cost effective to just get one or both palettes.
The magnetic palettes themselves feel like really nice quality. The back and sides are made of a rubberized material so they aren’t slippery in your hands. The lid can be positioned anywhere and has some tension to it so you can leave it halfway open and it will remain in that position. You can also lay it out completely flat. The lid is held shut magnetically as well. Now, I did see a review from Annette’s Makeup Corner, and she got one of the magnetic palettes that holds 9 eyeshadows. The magnetized sheet that was inside was warped in hers, so perhaps there is some variation in the quality of the palettes from size to size.
There is a gap between the pans in the palette when it is completely filled, meaning the pans don’t fit 100% perfectly in these palettes. This may be annoying for some people but for me I really don’t care. This gap makes it easier for me to take shades out if I want to without having to use some sort of tool to do so.
There are currently 10 foiled eyeshadows available. Three of them were slightly sheerer than the rest (Medieval, Day Dreamer, and Whimsical) but I had no problems building them up. They have a smooth, almost creamy texture that was neither too thin nor too thick. I was able to use a brush to apply them to the lid just fine but as with all shimmers, using my fingers did give me more intense color payoff and higher shine. There was some shimmer fallout but not so much that I feel the need to apply my foundation after my eyeshadow.
The formula of the mattes is different than most the mainstream brands I’ve tried. It took me a while to “get to know” this formula and how best to apply it. They are generally somewhat powdery, yet very pigmented. The majority of them adhere very well to the eyelid and don’t dust away (except for Prim and Proper, Blushing Beauty, Bitten, and Spilled Tea, which were slightly thinner and dustier than the rest but still workable). I can apply them either to a set or unset base. I appreciate this flexibility. I prefer to set my base as my eyelids can tend to get oily throughout the day.
Many of the deeper matte shades applied much more evenly with a flat shader brush, but this also caused the color to go on darker and made it more challenging to blend out the edges. A fluffy brush would sometimes cause the eyeshadows to lay on the lid in a patchy way that I was unable to smooth out with blending. The lighter matte shades generally applied fine with a fluffy brush.
The mattes have a similar texture across the board, although some of them are more loosely pressed and powdery while others are quite firmly pressed. The more firmly pressed ones formed a bit of hard pan during swatching but I don’t feel those ones performed any worse than any of the other shades.
The matte highlight shades (So Pale, Vanilla Bean, and Banana Split) are a smidge less pigmented than the rest but they still have plenty of color payoff. When blending the matte shades, sometimes I ran into issues with not being able to stretch the color out. Normally I am able to place a color in the crease and blend it fairly far upward into the transition area. There is a limit to how far some of them will move from where they are initially placed.
The four shades that are not included in the palettes are Peach Smoothie, Grandstand, Flame Thrower and Mystical. I like all of these and I’m glad I included them in my order. Personally I think peach smoothie is an essential transition shade to have, especially if you are fair and love warm toned and orange-y eyeshadow looks. There really isn’t a good substitute in the pre-made palettes. Grandstand is another one that I’d recommend. Being a bronze-y rose gold, it is the kind of shade that I think tends to be universally loved by most people.
Wear time was pretty average for me. I didn’t find that they lasted much longer than most other shadows I wear but I also didn’t think they creased on me super early in the day.
Pros:
Very large selection of neutral eyeshadows with a wide variety of undertones.
Pretty good selection of colorful eyeshadows. I would like to see an expansion on the greens/blues and lighter/brighter shade options.
Great color payoff.
Fallout during application was generally very minimal.
Elimination of the analysis paralysis phenomenon. This set provides you with a large number of shadows across a variety of tones and depths without having to pick colors one by one on the website.
The idea of having a gradient of shades organized this way does make it easy to pick out a select few shades to create your own palettes. However, this took me some getting used to. After having used this palette for over a month, I now feel I know what every color looks like, how dark each one is, what undertones they all have, etc. In the very beginning it was a little difficult for me to come up with color combinations but now I’m really happy with how it’s organized.
Cons:
If you are accustomed to dustier formulas that are incredibly easy to blend, this formula may take some getting used to. The majority of the shades stay where I initially apply them, so I can go ham blending without worrying about them dusting away. However, this comes at the price of spending more time getting a smooth blend.
I experienced a small degree of patchiness with several of the shades, especially the cooler tones and darker shades. It wasn’t terrible and wouldn’t deter me from using those shades. However, if you already have shades like those that you love and are extremely picky about how smoothly an eyeshadow lays on the lid, then you might want to skip the cooler tones and darker shades.
Enough similar shades that buying the whole matrix set can feel like a waste. The deep browns in the neutral palette do have different undertones that are obvious when you look at them in the pans, however on the eye, they are all extremely similar to each other. It’s possible the difference may be more visible on someone with a deeper skintone than me.
In the colorful palette, some of the columns don’t have enough difference in depth from light to dark, in my opinion. For example, creating a monochromatic look using the column that includes Current Obsession, Curfew, and Eternally Grateful does not end up looking balanced.
Shades that are extremely similar:
Tuscan Sun and Pinky Promise
Curfew and Eternally Grapeful
Seas The Day and Time Travel
Espresso Yourself and Deja Brew
Dark Roasted and Coffee Before Talkee
Worth buying?
$220 for both palettes is definitely a hit to the wallet, but I feel like the price is fair for what you get. If you are a makeup artist and you need to have wide variety of shades in a relatively compact space, this is not a bad way to achieve that. If you enjoy playing with color and makeup is more of a creative outlet for you, I think you would like this set. Keep in mind that most of the colors are pretty muted and a large percentage of them are on the darker side. I can get some lighter looks out of these shadows but I feel like the overall range of colors combined with the formula make these eyeshadow more ideal for those that enjoy intense color and darker, smokier looks. It’s also going to be a better fit for those that don’t mind shadows that require more time and effort to blend out. If you prefer eyeshadows that are super quick and easy to work with, you might want to err on the side of caution and maybe just pick up a few shades to see how you like the formula.
