Cherry Blossom Festival in Vancouver! (From Vancover, Canada)

This last weekend (April 11-15) there were no Events going on with the local Lolita fashion community, so I travelled to Canada’s coastal city, Vancouver, for their Cherry Blossom Festival! I even wore Lolita on the airplane. I wore my petticoats on the plane so they wouldn’t take up my entire suitcase, which is a good packing tip to keep in mind for any travelling Lolitas.

Upon arrival in Vancouver, it was quite rainy. Edmonton still had snow on the ground in some places when we left, so it was difficult to anticipate the weather on the coast (Canada has various weather conditions across the country). Luckily I packed rain shoes that would match my Lolita outfits (Kate Spade New York), umbrellas, and a coat by Metamorphose which was water resistant.

All of Vancouver was in bloom with different flowers including tulips, camellias, magnolias, and of course cherry blossoms. My travel companions and I enjoyed two events for the Cherry Blossom Festival at Queen Elizabeth Park and VanDusen Botanical Garden. The VanDusen garden had a Japanese cultural fair where people were able to rent Kimonos and Yukata. There were foods to try and performances on a stage, and we were even given free gifts like an Uchiwa (団扇).

Aside from the festival, my companions and I enjoyed activities such as bicycling around the Vancouver sea wall, visiting Granville Island Market (a large indoor farmers market), walking through Stanley Park (a large green space in the heart of the city), and shopping at Aberdeen center (which has an interesting pink arcade inside that is very cute). Vancouver is home to a few microbreweries, candy shops, and pastry shops. I highly recommend it as a travel destination for foreign Lolitas and Japanese fashion enthusiasts.

When you first met Spencer, no one would ever picture the two of you ending up together.

To be honest, you couldn't even picture it at first– meeting him at a cafe you ran into to get a fix of coffee, dressed in your gothic-style lolita dress, you didn't clock the six foot man in a cardigan until you accidentally bumped into him. From there on out, he told you some facts about the gothic style and how it often gets misconstrued or misinterpreted, and you were a goner.

The first few months of dating were incredible, both being in your little bubble, but it only popped when you met his team.

They were nice… but very wary of you. You could tell that they didn't understand you or the look you had, and you get that, you do. Not everyone has a metalhead-esqu style. The problem arose when one of them tried to make a joke saying they “went through that phase in high school.”

It kind of turned you off a little bit. You became very quiet around them, and only really spoke when spoken to. Spencer caught onto your introvertedness immediately though (you were pretty well reserved but you went in with meeting the team confidently), and squashed everything right then and there the moment he found out. You tried to let him know it wasn't that big of a deal, you’re an adult and can get over it, but his team had never seen him so riled up. They instantly apologized, making sure to let you know they had no ill intent, and you forgave, even going out with Penelope every month to go shopping (she told you about her style pre-BAU and you were going to do everything you could to bring back some of that).

After that, everything in the land of you and Spencer was fine and dandy. People would give you weird looks every now and then due to the very different styles you had, but you couldn't give a shit.

Tonight, you and Spencer were walking to one of the movie festivals he heard about, and on your way there, a woman was walking the opposite way, and smiled. “You two look so cute together!”

Your hands were intertwined and you both looked at her with shy smiles, “thank you,” you said together, and continued walking. When you were a good distance away, you looked at Spencer and let out a laugh. “You know what? We do look cute together.”

He gave your hand a squeeze and leaned over to kiss your temple. “That we do.”

the two of you try many activities together, like music festivals, painting by the ocean, couples' cooking classes, etc.

sayaka treats you to a lavish lifestyle because she can, and she loves spoiling you

if you see something you like in a shop window but don't get it, guess what you find sitting on your bed the next day

in conclusion, dating sayaka is being flooded with love through touch and gift-giving, being spoiled, and filling your schedule with fun

she won't make you wear gothic lolita clothing like hers if you don't want to but god forbid you wear something secondhand

suddenly your entire closet has been replaced with designer outfits and your old clothing has been shoved somewhere else where she's hoping you'll forget them

anyway, when she buys you clothes you can bet your ass she's gonna make you put on a fashion show for her while she gives commentary

other than clothes though she'll frequently buy you material things like jewelry

she LOVES to see you wearing things she's bought you, it gives her a bit of a power trip

celeste's love language is quality time

the two of you don't need to be talking to have a good time with each other

her favorite activity with you actually involves complete silence

the two of you reading books in each other's presence, accompanied by tea and finger sandwiches that celeste had her butler prepare

Kamikaze Girls by Takemoto Novala

“I’m so glad you’ve found such a good friend, Momoko. I was worried, you know, about how you’d get along with kids here in the countryside, since you’ve been a city girl all your life. You’re lucky you’ve found a friend you have so much in common with.” “I have nothing in common with Ichigo, and she isn’t even my friend, anyway.” “Really? But the two of you are always dressed the same way.” Hello?! Excuse me?! Can you possibly be serious?! What in god’s name do you mean, Ichigo and I are dressed the same way?! I wondered if Grandmother was getting senile, and felt a bit worried for her. “You both seem to enjoy looking very festive.” Oh. So that’s what she meant. For an old lady like my grandmother, Ichigo’s gaudy, tasteless Yanki clothing and my adorable, elegant Lolita clothing both looked simply theatrical, and were registered as being more or less the same.

Momoko is rather snobbish and solely devoted to wearing Sweet Lolita clothes from brand Baby the Stars Shine Bright while reflecting the lifestyle she believes goes with it. Particularly at odds in the Shimotsuma countryside where her grandmother lives after the Loser, her father, fled there tied to organized crime and counterfeit designer goods. Ichigo, a Yanki and part of the Ponytails youth gang, has a mouth as loud as her tricked out moped and knows little unless it involves motors and sheet metal. She has next to no clue about the Versace clothes she’s looking for, what knockoff means, or that a woman biker could be capable of sexual violence too. Yet under the surface there is a surprising parallel in ethos and these two teenagers will slowly become unlikely friends.

As Japanese pop culture expanded its reach fashion was part of the wave too, including Lolita fashion. A street style and subculture born in the 1970s taking inspiration from Western motifs of Rococo to Victorian and even more modern romantic ideas of France and British punk. Growing up around this, Takemoto Novala is an eccentric figure with some similarly eccentric ideas. Still in his career he has made a noteworthy mark on the Lolita fashion subculture. (While he has also professionally suffered some hiccups due to drug possession.)

A big deal was the live-action adaptation in 2004 of his 2002 bestselling novel Shimotsuma monogatari, given the odd moniker Kamikaze Girls in English. Directed by Tetsuya Nakashima, starring Fukada Kyoko and Tsuchiya Anna, and featuring twists and an aesthetic of its own meshing mediums. Best described as a fun film, it both affectionately presents and pokes a bit at its subjects. Followed by translations including other various writing by Takemoto (who work has also been endorsed by writer Yoshimoto Banana) becoming something of a cult classic.

The novel is still one of my go-to tomes for depicting the Lolita fashion lifestyle. Momoko a heroine for her free spirit. A character that comes to mind for a lot of Lolitas. Although that does not mean Momoko is not a character who says some things I would view in a more askance way or shake my head at. (Also, the quote falsely attributed to Marie Antoinette “Let them eat cake!”, or « Qu’ils mangent de la brioche. » if we’re being a stickler, is reproduced.) In reality there are many ways of wearing Lolita and being a Lolita up to cultivating a whole lifestyle. The clothes and what those mean also changing over time. If you have got the spirit, you can rock it in a field to a formal venue. Likewise gotten from a humble home sewing table to big city boutique. Often evoking youth and the feminine, age and gender should not hold one back either. (It hasn’t for Takemoto.) Personally, Gothic Lolita too is part of what got me into fashion design.

Twenty and some years later I still feel that blooming feeling in my chest over the clothes, book and film. With trends looking back to the 1990/2000s now, old school Lolita is back too. As Takemoto has said, “Lolita’s not dead.”

So not to be dramatic since people probably already know this but The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You is kinda going at an insane clip? Like, I saw people estimating that the manga would be around 1000 chapters but if you look at my #CoolGraph™ they hit 20 girlfriends by chapter 101. This is to say these madmen could get to the titular 100 Girlfriends in by chapter 500.

I don't know about you but that seems fast as hell to me. That's introducing a new girlfriend *every 5 chapters* and they've already gotten very high concept. Let's compare one of the earlier girlfriends to one of the more recent girlfriends.

Yoshimoto Shizuka - Girlfriend #3

As she is one of the earliest girlfriends, her concept is very simple with a slight twist. She's a bookish shy type who has a very hard time communicating with people. To spice things up, she is almost only able to communicate with a text to speech app that reads out lines from her favorite novels. This alone is a pretty interesting concept and a good take on the classic shy library girl trope.

Now let's take one of the more recent girlfriends.

Dei Matsuri - Girlfriend #27

I don't even know where to start with this one.

We've got a gothic lolita character who loves festivals and specializes in cooking yakisoba. Already this is interesting but then we get to their way of speaking and how it is translated where I truly start to believe we're going off the deep end.

Matsuri's speaking style is based on the Edo dialect, which these days is essentially historical and mostly found in fiction. This interpretation, coupled with the fact that Matsuri is supposedly half English and half Japanese, caused her to speak in a way similar to a fictional exaggerated British accent. This makes me lose my fucking marbles. Coupled with the fact that the writer of 100 Girlfriends likes to give characters simple catchphrases, Matsuri's being translated as 'Ya daft sod', I feel like I'm going to collapse every time I try to read through these new chapters.

This isn't the first time this manga has gone high concept and it's been going for it for quite a while. Around the time Yakuzen Kusuri - Girlfriend #5 was added and we got the chance for sci-fi manga logic drugs to show up whenever they please, I knew this manga was going to go off the tracks. The real kicker for me is simply the fact that it's going so off the wall so early. At the time of this writing we are only 28 girlfriends deep and I already feel like this manga is stretching the limits of character concepts.

All this to say this manga is wild and the creators Nakamura Rikito and Nozawa Yuki should be applauded for their ability to not only Commit to the Bit but continue to come up with wilder characters that still feel coherent when read.

Since I love all nine Nazgul, I will answer for the two canons and all four of my ocs!!

The Captain refers to the Witch King! If we apply this to all of the Nazgul, it means that they at least don't need to eat. They may be able to eat, that is another question. I hold that they can't eat but it's an area of discussion!

You passed through Mirkwood with a travelling dance performance; it was actually Legolas who begged his father to let your group perform, and, seeing that the autumn festivities had just started, it blended perfectly into the feast. The King's eyes were fixed on you - he admired your movements and felt almost enchanted by your performance. Although remaining cold and calculated, he invited you to stay in his realm. At first, you had been reluctant but soon realised that this would allow you more alone time and the opportunity to explore the woods that mesmerised you on your way in. Thus you remained at his court, enjoying a very undisturbed time - Thranduil was no fan of guests, and he often kept you around. From time to time, you were asked to train a few elves a choreography or two, but these occasions were sparse. You commented to the King that he must be keeping you around for decoration to which he replied: "The most beautiful jewels are not to be worn every day." This puzzled you, but throughout the months you had stayed there, the two of you had developed a kind of rapport that downright shocked the Elves at times. You would make sarcastic comments, and he'd be quick with a response - so, you chalked his words up to that. The truth was, he had slowly fallen for you. How could a human be so mesmerising? He used every opportunity to rest his hand on your back or to stroke your arm; at times it could border on intimacy, but never in a way that made you uncomfortable. Sitting in silence with you was comforting, and he was taken with your intelligence. It wasn't long before he started confiding in you about issues of his realm or asking for your advice. Upon learning that you liked to walk the forest on your own, he insisted on accompanying you and showed you a path no one else, but him knew about. However, he cautioned you not to wander off too far, for the woods were infested with the creatures of darkness. Soon, his own feelings became apparent to him. He feared to love someone he could lose to death and very suddenly he cut off all contact with you. This left you hurt since you had formed a strong bond with him. You felt better understood by Thraduil than anyone else and losing this connection to no cause was painful. You kept analysing your conversations, trying to find the point where you might've gone too far, or maybe if you had become too touchy with him (you allowed yourself to sometimes touch his upper arm or nudge him jokingly, but was it unacceptable by Elvish standard?). These thoughts kept you busy while walking the woods alone, often opting for the very path he had shown you - only this time, you ventured farther into the denseness of the forest. Was it inattention or anger not to heed his advice, you couldn't quite tell, but it wasn't long before you encountered the very beast he was afraid you'd meet. Before you was a huge spider, and in a second, you were stung on the neck and lost consciousness. When you came to, Thranduil was by your side. He dismissed the healers, then scolded you for leaving the borders of his land: "If you wish to leave, you first let me know." "I thought you wanted me to leave." "I would have you forever around, though my heart would ache seeing you be slowly consumed by death." He brushed a strand from your cheek and placed a kiss on your lips. He spent the rest of your days in the healing wards next to you, and after that, you were always by his side.

Entry 122: Screw America I Guess

Xenologue 21 Hoshidan Festival of Bonds and Xenologue 22 Nohrian Festival of Bonds

So, these next chapters are a bit of a problem, because they were never released outside of Japan. Meaning that not only can I not play them, but I can’t even read the scripts, because there are no official scripts. All I have is things on the wiki, which might not be reliable.

These seem to be a follow-up to Awakening’s scramble maps, where the army visits a place and we get cgs of them in special outfits. Midori, Dwyer, Forrst, Shigure, Ophelia, and Nina all wear kimonos in the Hoshidan one. Forrest wears a girl's kimono and Nina has two right feet. All of the children have black hair because their mothers (father in Shigure's case) aren't set in stone. The Nohrian festival is Halloween themed and features Xander as a pirate, Subaki as a prince, Leo as a vampire, Camilla as a succubus, Oboro as a gothic lolita, and Setsuna as a mummy. I assume, like the Awakening scramble chapters, they were chosen by a poll.

These chapters come with new Supports between the children and their mothers and between first generation units without Supports respectively. Unfortunately, I can’t read them. There were various people who attempted to translate these Supports, but I don’t have a verifiable list of what Supports were in the Japanese version, so I don’t know how complete any of these translations are. Plus, they are by the very nature of translation different from what we would have got with an official translation. Also, this blog is focused on the English version we got, not the Japanese version.

I am very obviously making excuses to not do these conversations. The thing is, I’m really sick of Fate’s writing and Supports. It has slowly grinded me down over time. I fell off this blog for months, because I am sick of bad Supports, so I don’t want to read dozens more that I don’t have to.

Support: Ignatius/Nina

C: Nina hornily spies on Ignatius talking to another guy. He spots her and she freaks out because she's bad with guys. Ignatius asks her to not follow him.

B: Nina spies on two cute boys. Ignatius shows up and watches the cute boys pickpocket a woman. Ignatius assumes she's trying to fight thievery and they team up to take out the thieves.

A: Nina tries to thank Ignatius, but can't say it. Ignatius realizes she struggles to talk to people. Nina says that Ignatius is kind and reliable and, while not daydream material, she can stand being his friend, if he tries to look cute more often.

S: Ignatius says he wants to be more than friends and calls Nina adorable. Nina starts daydreaming about him and tries to set Ignatius up with another guy.

Review: Pretty good. Nina being awkward around people makes her more tolerable and her accidentally stopping a robbery is amusing.

Support: Forrest/Shigure

C: Shigure uses oil paints instead of watercolors, which is a style from a century ago. Forrest says he studies the fashion in old portraits and cuts his hair based on one portrait.

B: Shigure and Forrest decide to prank their friends by painting a pretty lady, except the lady is actually Forrest!

A: Their friends recognize Forrest in the painting, because he is the only beauty in the army. Take that, Charlotte!

Review: This one is so stupid but I kinda like it. Shigure and Forrest are the nicest friendliest guys in the army, so their idea of a prank is ridiculously lame. It's endearing.

Support: Percy/Velouria

C: Velouria asks if Percy gets tired of hanging out with Ace all the time. Percy says he's always happy around ace. Velouria explains she's more comfortable when alone.

B: Velouria stares at an abandoned bird nest because she wonders if it smells like pretty birds. Percy gets it for her using Ace. Velouria offers him the first sniff.

A: Percy and Ace go to a lake. Velouria wants to go along because they're close friends of hers and she doesn't have many. Vekouria says she'll dig for fossils on the beach. S: Percy gives Velouria a nest from a rooftop. Velouria invites Percy to go treasure hunting with her. Percy says he doubts there'll be any treasure better than her.

Review: A nice friendly Support with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

Support: Midori/Ophelia

C: Ophelia does fortune-telling. Midori calls it fake and accuses Ophelia of not wanting to face reality.

B: Midori continues to mock Ophelia's fortune telling saying Ophelia just says stuff she wants to hear. Ophelia counters that this is to build confidence. Ophelia says that's a good thing and offers to tell Midori's fortune. Midori refuses, because she has enough problems in the present, with all the sick people she has to take care of.

A: Midori has a breakdown over all the wounded and dying. Ophelia tells her her destiny: to smile, surrounded by those she've healed. Ophelia says this dream will come true if Ophelia keeps working hard. Ophelia admits she does fortune telling to keep going in a world filled with pain.

Review: Goddamn that was a good Support! I take back like 5% of my complaints about Supports. Midori is a deep character haunted by the stresses of war. She calls out Ophelia for being immature, but Ophelia shows that her coping mechanism isn’t all bad.
