Marina Dyachenko and Sergey Dyachenko, Vita Nostra (tr. Julia Meitov Hersey) • Mircea Suciu, Camouflage (2) • Agostino Arrivabene, Immutatio • Matthias Claudius, "Der Tod und Das Mädchen" • Henry Fuseli, The Nightmare • Dragan Bibin, Pull (edited) • Maria Kreyn, Angel's Back • Franz Wimmer, Death and the Maiden • Mel Chin, Bat and Dove • Ana Sanchez, Death and the Maiden
#vita nostra#death and the maiden#the gothic imagination#some dread chord#compilations#web weaving#marina dyachenko#sergey dyachenko#henry fuseli#dragan bibin#franz wimmer#myedit#lit tag#litedit#bookedit#quotes one compiles while listening to the lexa lexie edit of house of metal 🎶#VN's themes of fear and metamorphosis got me thinking#beyond the fourth wall breaking+gnosticism aspects‚ it's ultimately a coming of age story right (or coming of Self if we're being literal)#and i would argue the figure of death / metamorphosis (oftentimes one and the same) is a key element in such a narrative#we see the terror turn into begrudging acceptance of the metamorphosis#and sasha does accept it‚ to a degree. to the degree that kostya remarks on how alike she and farit have become#but the story does not end at her acceptance. it ends with her reaching beyond it (esp with the final lines of the book):#“The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. [...] Do not be afraid.”#the idea that 'yes you are the final law of this world but not of them all. i can create another one'#also some of the other elements to consider wrt the figure of death concept:#the coins necessary for admittance to the university (reminiscent of those given to the dead as a payment for the ferryman)#+ the instances farit's appearance is likened to an illuminated skull (one of the most harrowing being the last temptation offer to sasha)#+ the students almost being considered dead to the outside world once they cross the threshold of the town#idk it's just a really interesting aspect for me#realizing i probably went a little overboard with all the quotes. well. just know that i had to hold myself back from adding even more 👩🏻‍💻

what drives me insane about how barok van zieks being deliberately associated with dracula and vampirisms and such is that dracula (novel) is literally about the fear of the other. dracula is a foreigner from a scary foreign country who wants to invade england and its derived from real fears that the british had of people colonizing them back. barok van zieks, world famous racist, lord of racism in the ace attorney fandom, was designed in the image of a character created to represent racist fears. The irony!!!!! I love it!!!!! Was this intentional???? I dont know!!! But you can certainly say alot about it!!!!
even in-game, because the characters' reactions to him are based off that Fear of the Other, he is dehumanised and thus othered all the while he views japanese people with contempt. london views him as a harbinger of death. barok views japanese people as a group who only brought him misfortune; who tricked him and brought death to his family. what is the significance of this? what more can we say if we see him as someone brought up coddled and innocent (as ive said too much about) then having it all stripped away from him whilst also being casted away into the category of the other. what does it mean for the relationship between him and ryunosuke, who wanted to push through the reaper and find out what he really was
i cant really say much because its been a little bit since ive finished the game and so i cant recall specific details but like oughhhhhhhhhhhhh lets think about this

Links to films I have hanging around
Most of these are either sci-fi or horror.
Please bear in mind the age of some of these films when watching they will not be 100% cohesive to modern views.
Most of these are links to internet archive. There are also links to wikipedia and youtube.
1920s- mainly german expressionism:
The cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920)
The man who laughs (1928)
Nerves (1919)
Nosferatu (1922)
Metropolis (1927)
Genuine (1920)
The phantom carriage (1921)
The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) <- oldest surviving animated film
Die Nibelungen (1924) -> i warn you it is 6 hours long. Has the first dragon ever shown on a screen though
Different from the others (1919)
This is one of my favourite films and also the saddest film I have ever watched. It is the first film to show homosexuality in a positive light.
The majority of the film was destroyed by the Nazis.
Definitely worth a watch if you are interested in LGBTQ history.
30s horror:
Frankenstein (1931)
The bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Dracula (1931)
M (1931)
Freaks (1932)
1940s:
The mark of Zorro (1940)
Sci-fi B movies:
The green slime (1968) <- my favourite
Fire maidens from outer space (1956)  <- worst film i have ever had the pleasure to watch
It came from outer space (1953) <- a classic
Animated:
La Planète sauvage (english version) (1973)
Akira   (1988)
Janos Vitez (1973)
Ballerina on boat  (1969)
Experimental:
Koyaanisqatsi (1982)
Musicals:
The rocky horror picture show (1975)
Little shop of horrors (1966) <- i am being slightly sneaky putting this here since this is actually the original film that inspired the musical
Cabaret:
Joel Grey live (1988)
Movie (1972)
Alan Cumming at the Donmar warehouse (1993) <- my favourite
A google drive of over the garden wall i found while getting these films

rahh i need to get back into reading house of leaves¹, i got real into it before falling by the wayside² when classes started giving more work. gotta get out the sticky notes and shit and dive back into it.³
────────────
¹Danielewski, Mark Z., Zampanò, and Johnny, Truant. 2000. Pantheon Books.
²shouldnt this be like "it fell by the wayside?" pretty sure the thing falls by the wayside not the person.⁴
³something about women that goes on for three pages
⁴To fall by the wayside can mean to fail to finish an activity. –Ed.
The only reason why I didn't fall by the wayside¹ was because my sibling told me to get it back to them², shoutout to my sibling
Best of luck diving back in! o7³
────────────
¹I somehow managed to read all of house of leaves in ten days, I was locked the fuck in⁴
²Personal communication with [illegible], May 14, 2025.⁵
³anecdote also undoubtedly about women and possibly about a series of events that gets progressively more confusing until you're convinced it never actually happened, but everything is weird enough already that there might be some amount of truth to it. Or maybe there never was any truth in any of this. Maybe I need to not shut myself in my room all day reading and get out of the house. Do some gardening.
⁴To "lock in" was defined by an Urban Dictionary user as "to be extra extra focused on your dream." As with most slang, it most likely stems from AAVE (see knowyourmeme.com). –Ed.
⁵Since the copy I read was one I borrowed from my sibling, they also told me I couldn't annotate it as I would have wished (again, personal communication with [illegible], May 14, 2025). Probably should've gotten some sticky notes like you did, that would've been fun.
