I've written two novels this year. The first was about 70 000 words and from memory is in second draft form. The other is 93 000 and not quite third draft. Not a lot of time has passed between writing them. That's not even one book every six months, since I finished the latest at the end of October. I believe both had about the same writing time, though planning was different simply due to the nature of the novels (one is a vigilante story, the other is high fantasy). Yet, when I opened up the vigilante doc. yesterday I was struck by how much my writing has changed, improved, between stories.

I used to find the advice of 'write more' to be annoying, when looking for ways to become better. But here it is, the proof that it's true. Right away I could see how weak my writing was back in February this year, how much work that novel needs. Yet, my high fantasy, which I was nervous about starting as I felt I wasn't at the right level for it, is so much better.

Don't get me wrong, it's not perfect, it still needs work, but the evidence is there. The proof that my writing, your writing, can and does get better with time.

Don't be discouraged if you feel like you're not at the level you want to be at. Like everything else, writing takes practice. Look back on your previous work, and I guarantee you'll see the improvement.

Tough love reminder from one of my favourite creative fictional boyfriends. Felt like he was yelling directly at me😅 #shame. I look at this and remember I have a blog post to draft, chapters of both fanfiction and original WIPs to edit... yeah. I need to #gowrite. Takashi is a composer with the highest standards for lyrics to go with his music. He often gets so consumed in his creative process he forgets to eat amd survives off of just caramel candies... his infamous "demon mode" comes out during recording sessions because of his passion for the songs he's creating with the band and desire to produce only the best for the fans amd himself. Day 19 - Best writing advice I’ve ever received. Hmmm... I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was very young. I’ve read lots of writing books. (I recommend Stephen King’s ON WRITING and John Gardner’s The Art of Fiction). I’ve read so many motivational and inspirational writing quotes, there’s tons so find the ones that speak to you and read them often. (One of my personal favs is by Toni Morrison “If there's a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it.”) The best advice I ever received was from my older sister Helen (who’s no longer with us); when I told her I wanted to be a writer she was like, “Then go do it. Go write.” At the time I was like, really, that’s all you’ve got for me? But my parents were not that supportive of my writing ambitions (they wanted me to be a lawyer) and she knew I had to prove I was determined and that entailed showing them through hard work. So I started writing a lot in high school, and I won a few writing contests. NYU Tisch contacted me and I secretly applied, got in early and told my parents it was writing school or nothing. (I don’t recommend brazen ultimatums to parents FYI, it got very tense at my house. Haha.) Anyway, I picked this picture of one of my fav temporary tattoos (shown here during my she-of-many-bracelets phase a few years ago)because it’s how I became a writer. I went and wrote, just like my sister said. I do it until my battery gets depleted and then I wake up and do it some more. I have written 7 books and worked on hundreds of episodes of TV (with wildly varying levels of success) and I’m still doing it, because I love it and it’s all I want to do. You want to be a writer?
