How to Fix a Pothole: A Guide to a Typical Replacement Patch?
Pothole patching is a huge industry. Your business can fix potholes for nearby companies and private homes for a very pleasant extra income with just a few pieces of equipment and a two-man staff. Some municipal administrations also use local contractors as subcontractors for this task. For example, In Grimsby area several patching companies are working with contractors to provide asphalt patching service. The fundamental steps for patching a pothole are listed below.
Ways to fix a pothole: 1. Cut the patch's outline, extending at least 0.3 m (I ft) outside of the damaged area, using a pavement saw or pneumatic hammer. Two of the sides of the shape should be at right angles to the direction of travel, making it square or rectangular.
2. Remove as much pavement as required in order to get solid support. A patch's foundation needs to be at least as sturdy as the original roadway if it is to be an essential component of the pavement. This might need removing a portion of the sub-grade as well.
3. Flatten and trim the subgrade.
4. Cover the excavation's vertical faces with a tack coat.
5. Use the asphalt mixture as a backfill. Place the mixture straight from the truck into the prepared excavation using a shovel or skid steer loader. In significant part, the type of asphalt mixture and the compaction equipment available determine the maximum lift thickness. Deep lifts are appropriate for placing asphalt concrete because the heavier layers' increased heat retention helps with compaction. Patches made of asphalt concrete can be backfilled in a single lift from the perspective of compaction. To make it easier to determine the total amount of mixture needed for the patch, it is generally helpful to leave the initial lift 2.5 to 5 cm (I to 2 in.) below the finishing grade when installing a patch deeper than 3 cm (5 in.).
6. Spread sparingly to prevent mixture segregation. Refrain from transferring the material from the patch's center to its edges. If additional material is required along the edge, it ought to be added there and the extra removed with a rake. The mixture should be put in an amount that will guarantee the patch surface will not be lower than the surrounding pavement following compaction. However, if an excessive amount of material is used, a hump will rise.
7. Firmly press down on every lift of the patch. Make use of tools appropriate for the task at hand. Larger areas are probably better suited for a vibratory roller, while little projects work well with a vibratory plate compactor. When compacting the last lift, which might be the only lift, overlap the vibratory roller or plate compactor's first pass and return by no more than 5 cm (6 in.) on one side of the patch. After that, go to the other side and carry out the same procedure. After you've done this, move forward at an angle to the compacted edges, overlapping the uncompact mix by a few inches with each pass and return. In order to reduce the possibility of the mix being pushed, compaction should move from the low side to the high side if there is a gradient.
8. The patch's surface ought to be the same height as the nearby pavement when suitable compaction equipment is utilized. However, if hand tamping or other gentle compaction techniques are used, the patch's surface should be slightly higher than the surrounding pavement because the patch is likely to be further compacted by traffic.
9. Examine the patch's vertical alignment and smoothness using a straightedge or string line.

You know any decent books for modern neural net stuff? I'm an experienced data scientist who has been working on domains where neural nets don't perform well, but I've started a large text and image recognition project where I suspect neural nets will be necessary to get adequate performance.
Hmm… not books specifically, no. For all I know there are some good ones out there, but IMO modern neural net stuff is especially hard to distill usefully into books, and you just have to go to survey papers and code examples.
To some extent this is just because the field moves quickly. It’s also because so many neural nets used in practice today rely on “pretraining,” where instead of doing gradient descent “from scratch” with a completely random starting point, on you initialize a subset of your model parameters with those from a model someone else already trained on a large and fairly generic dataset in the same domain. (Here’s a cool paper comparing two different flavors of this for NLP tasks, including a few links to papers about the same kind of thing for images.)
Because you need to do this to get anywhere near state-of-the-art performance, the question “how do I make a good neural net model in 2019?” has an answer that is fairly entangled with the specifics of other people’s code and technology choices.
Like, you won’t merely be using a kind of model written by people at (say) Google – which is just some equations that you could implement yourself in principle. You’ll be using an actual array of numbers produced by those people, which you’ll download off the internet, and yeah in principle you could write your own loader for that array and hook up the loaded numbers to the right ones in your own code, but in practice that might involve reverse engineering half of TensorFlow or something horrible like that. Realistically, of course, you’re going to use the actual code and packages used by the Google-or-wherever people, which means committing to many of their specific software choices – or you’ll use the code of some 3rd party which can port the same numbers into some other specific software environment.
In short, the core model design stuff is not the hard part (and is continually changing anyway), the hard part is getting familiar with one of the specific software packages you have to use to actually do what all the current papers do, choosing the right one, discovering everything that sucks about it and how to work around that, and similar things.
Anyway, for text classification, you can get up and running with just pretrained word vectors plus some Conv or LSTM layers; if you want to do better you then replace the word vectors with ELMo, and if you want to do even better you replace the whole thing with BERT.
To get started learning about the types of models people use in NLP, at least before the “BERT for everything” transition, a good start is the papers associated with the trained models in AllenNLP, linked from this page and with live demos here. I don’t necessarily recommend using AllenNLP the package (speaking from experience here), but a nice thing about the project is that they try to reproduce lots of state-of-the-art models inside of it, so they’re a good resource for what those look like.
I don’t know as much about images – I think people start with pretrained models that were trained on ImageNet and there’s a few that are maybe the standard ones?
W/r/t the software choices, a good place to start is to set up Keras with the TensorFlow backend and then run through some tutorials. When I talked earlier about existing stuff you’ll be forced to work with, that code will probably either be TensorFlow-based or PyTorch-based, and for the TensorFlow ones, Keras is a decent usability layer that can sort of shield you from immense pain and frustration of writing raw TensorFlow.
(Unfortunately, even here things are kind of ugly because there’s “Keras,” which interfaces with TensorFlow and a few older frameworks, and then “tf.keras,” which is the Keras inside of TensorFlow that’s a different project, and then TensorFlow has its own other usability layer called “Models” or something, and also I think TensorFlow 2.0 is an attempt to make TensorFlow itself vaguely usable by human beings, but it’s quite new and I’m sure it has it’s own horrors. Or you could just choose PyTorch. But “Keras (not tf.keras) with TensorFlow backend” is the actual setup I can vouch for personally as being reasonably friendly)
Edit to add: I also recommend this famous blog post as a reference for all the different fancy gradient descent algorithms people use in the area. Important because all current work uses one of them (and so yours will), usually Adam.
#furioustimemachinebarbarian#ai tag#no idea if this is in the spirit of the question but someone will probably get something out of it

Handsome Ride (19/20)
So I asked for crack pairings because that’s what I wanted to write today, and:
@slenderwave: Miki x Godzilla, Handsome Jack x Knock Out, Prowl x That Cop From Hot Fuzz
@slenderwave: (listen, you said crack and extremely unusual. i shot for the moon)
And I’ve been hooting over Handsome Jack/Knock Out for the last hour and a half. So today I wrote a double length.
###
"Oh, wow." Jack rushed right past the other cars Mr. Blake was showing him—options for his first tour of the Opportunity construction site—and directly to the hot red number at the end. “Hey there, gorgeous. Didn’t see you there."
Behind him, Blake mumbled, “I don’t think that one’s on my list of…"
"Check out this body." Jack traced two fingertips along one line from over the front left tire to the back of the door. “Smooth. Sleek. And look at that paint job—the red says ‘timeless classic married with youthful energy,’ the gradient fade says ‘creative and innovative, but I’d never support a real graffiti vandal.’ And juuust enough gold detailing so you know the driver’s rich but but not so much he looks insecure about it. Oh yeah. This is the one."
"Sir, I don’t think this is one of—“
"Shut up and call the flower children in our graphic design department, I want this beauty photoshopped in place of that hideous fur rug they’ve got me lying on for November of next year’s pinup calendar." He ran his hand over the hood. “What would you call this color—crimson? Candy apple?"
The car replied, “I consider myself more of a torch red, actually."
Jack pulled his hand back, staring at the car.
“And you’re not too bad looking yourself," the car replied, in the kind of voice that usually came from a man leaning one elbow on a hotel bar and holding a fifty dollar drink while he gave another business traveler a slow, arched-eyebrows up-and-down leer. “Handsome Jack, isn’t it? Mind if I just call you Jack? Mind if I just call you Handsome?"
Jack turned in the direction Blake had gone to call graphic design and shouted, in a voice a bit higher pitched than usual, “Who programmed this car? I love this car."
"Oh, please. No one here programmed me. At the company that made Claptraps?" The car scoffed. “You’ve improved your aesthetics since then, I’ll give you that, but you’ve never put out a robot I’d want to talk to for more than five seconds."
"Got to admit, it’s a novel experience for me too." Jack eyed the car a tad more warily as he shifted a step back. “So, mind explaining what you’re doing in a giant H-shaped Hyperion space station if you’re not a Hyperion product? What are you, exactly—Maliwan?"
"You flatter me." The car’s body split into pieces. As Jack watched, they twisted around a shifting metal chassis, rising into the air—like a JET Loader changing modes but infinitely more sophisticated. It continued speaking as it reconfigured itself: “I considered going to Maliwan, actually; but we prefer your company’s work with—and access to—energon."
"’Energon’?"
When its parts had stopped moving, the car was a kneeling, smirking robot with the kind of broad-chested narrow-waisted physique that some execs would pay millions to have their heads grafted onto. “I believe your species calls it eridium?" The robot held out a business card the size of a poster. “Knock Out. I represent the Decepticons—don’t mind the name, long history there—and we’re looking into expanding our energon mining operations. Our market isn’t human, so we won’t be cutting in on any of your business. You’ve got nothing to lose."
"Robotic and alien, huh?" Jack held up the business card in both hands. “Love your corporate logo, very chic. Makes me think… ‘sharp.’ ‘Cutting edge.’" He tucked the card under one arm. “So what have I got to gain?"
"A massive jump in your weapons R&D. We’ve been making energon-powered weapons for millions of years." Knock Out pulled out what looked like a touch pad and scrolled through several holographic projections of weapon blueprints annotated in an alien language. “Think you’re ready for an eridium weapon that does more than spew a mining byproduct?"
"Oh, I love that line, that’s a great line, it’d be perfect for marketing a new product line. Out with the slag, in with the new."
"Also catchy," Knock Out said. “So. Intrigued?"
Jack’s echo communicator beeped, and he held up a finger. “Let’s talk on the go." He strode toward the elevator—cargo elevator, unfortunately, to make sure a car-sized robot would fit. Knock Out kept pace with a leisurely stroll. “I’ve got a tour of Opportunity I’m running late for—and I mean actually late, not ‘I’m making them wait three hours standing outside in the heat so that by the time I arrive they’ve stopped being mad and are just grateful to see me’ late. You know what I mean?"
"Oh, absolutely," Knock Out said, ducking to get into the elevator. “I’m a surgeon."
Jack laughed so hard he bent over double.
When he straightened up, still gasping for air, he said, “Hey, hey, this business deal—does it come with getting to drive you?"
With a sideways glance and a coy smirk, Knock Out said, “Only if you’re gentle." He transformed back into a car and popped open the driver’s door. “My leather parts are sensitive."
"Genuine leather?" Jack tossed the business card into the passenger seat and slid into the driver's seat.
"Obviously."
He fastened his seatbelt as the door shut itself. “How sensitive?"
"Why don’t you find out?"
Running his hands along the steering wheel, Jack whispered, “I really, really love this car."

The 2020 Red Wave Could Be Starting Already – In Virginia, Citizens Just Voted 3 Democrats Out Of Office
Democrats won a majority in Virginia’s government. Soon after, they began to push a radical left-wing agenda.
It got even worse during the pandemic, as their governor took drastic lockdown steps. Extending them, like many other liberal states.
But it looks like their moves may be backfiring. An election was this week. And voters are striking back hard.
From Daily Caller:
Republican candidates Mark Robertson, Amy Darby, and Steve Claffey all joined incumbent Andrea Oakes in a four-seat GOP sweep, WHSV reported. The three incoming council members replaced Democratic incumbents Erik Curren, Ophie Kier, and James Harrington all almost doubled their vote totals from 2016, yet still lost.
Woah. A Virginia city that went for Obama in both elections just ousted Democrat leaders in a landslide result.
Three Democrat incumbents were voted out, replaced by GOP candidates.
What’s amazing is that all three Democrats got more votes from 2016—but still lost.
That means voters came out in force to back the Republican candidates. What does that tell you?
Reports say that Republican voters came out in numbers close to a governor race, a big election.
Our Take:
Why did voters come out in a May election—during the ongoing crisis—to push out these liberals? I think you know the answer.
According to reports, voters were particularly fired up over the state’s aggressive gun control measures. We’ve covered much of what Virginia’s Democrat lawmakers have tried to pull.
On top of that, it looks like voters have gotten sick and tired of the governor’s COVID-19 lockdowns.
That is a trend we’ve seen in recent special elections. Earlier in the month, two special elections in Wisconsin and California went for Republicans.
Republicans flipped a CA blue seat red. Many point to the strict lockdown measures California’s Democratic leadership endorsed.
All across the country, Americans watch Democrats enforce tough orders that cripple the economy.
Meanwhile, conservative states have safely reopened, and it looks like the virus is mostly under control.
There’s a pretty big difference between both party’s leadership during this crisis. And after all the things Virginia’s Democratic leadership has tried to pull—should we be surprised from this turnout?
But what does this mean for the future of the state? What will happen in November, when more elections in VA take place?
Will this trend continue or will the swamp continue to drown Virginia?
SHARE if you are ready to see a Red Wave this November.

Top Useful Construction Equipment- Recognized Worldwide

Due to the productive nature of the building job, it is common practice to make use of earthmoving equipment. During the early age, human power was employed to move the earth, which required a significant amount of time and people.
However, with the advancement of technology, earthmoving equipment has been brought into the construction industry. These days, earthmoving equipment that is both more modern and more readily maneuverable can be found on the market. This results in a significant reduction in the amount of time and labor required, which in turn leads to building practices that are more efficient and save time.
There is a wide variety of earthmoving equipment Top Construction Equipment Supplier that may be employed for the building process, and each piece of machinery has a specific function.
Here is a list of a few Top Construction Equipment to make your work easy:
Backhoe
The backhoe is a useful piece of construction equipment that is utilized extensively in the business. It is a machine that is a hybrid of a bulldozer and an excavator. It is possible to utilize it for earthmoving work that has to be done quickly, and if the volume of the task is small, it may stand in for both excavator and loader attachments.
In addition, since it has a four-wheel system, it can navigate any kind of uneven terrain with ease. As a result, backhoes are often used in the construction industry. The levers are moved by hydraulic pistons, and the bucket may be swapped out for various helpful attachments depending on the situation.
Skid steer loader
A skid steer loader is a piece of compact machinery that may be used for rapid labor as well as in locations that are inaccessible to larger pieces of machinery. The equipment can be maneuvered with relative ease, which is one of its primary advantages.
In addition to this, it may be used to load dirt into dump trucks. The fact that each wheel on this piece of machinery can revolve in its own right is this device's defining quality; it enables it to maneuver in confined areas.
Trencher
When it comes to construction work, a trencher is another helpful piece of equipment that can be used to dig trenches. The trencher is characterized by a lengthy arm that is fitted with a revolving belt of blades.
While the equipment is traveling in the desired direction along the specified line, the blades dig trenches. Additionally, this may be put to use in the excavation of irrigation channels, foundation trenches, road drainages, and other similar applications. Trenchers are frequently used in the agricultural sector of the economy.
Motor grader
Another helpful piece of earthmoving equipment is called a motor grader. This machinery sees a lot of action in the field of road building. The primary function of a motor grader is to shape surfaces following prescribed gradients and orientations of the slope.
It is possible to prepare flat surfaces by using the long blade that is connected to the front arm of the equipment. Because of its widespread use in the process of road building, the motor grader is also known as the road grader. The development of irrigation systems also makes use of this particular technology.
My personal preferred Excavator and loader Attachments
I would utilize excavators, backhoes, and a skid steer loader for the job that has been presented. The primary reason for hiring an excavator is the quantity of dirt that has to be removed to have the basement ready.
Backhoes will be used for work on a smaller scale and the preparation of slopes. Skid steer loaders are going to be used for smaller jobs that cannot accommodate larger pieces of equipment due to space constraints.
Most skid-steer loaders
Most skid-steer loaders are four-wheeled vehicles with wheels that are mechanically locked together on each side. The wheels on the left side can be driven separately from the wheels on the right side. A skid loader is a small, rigid-frame machine with lift arms that can be used to attach a wide range of tools or attachments that make work easier.
Conclusion
It is predicted that the Top Construction Equipment Supplier, Excavator and loader Attachments, and demand for earthmoving equipment would expand. As a result of persistent shifts in the framework of existing infrastructure as well as the expansion of the engineering and construction sector. Earthmoving Equipment manufacturers are implementing a variety of technological improvements by making adjustments to a select number of key aggregates in order to improve the loaders' capacity to work while consuming less fuel and increasing their overall productivity. This will allow the loaders to produce even more.

Implementation of Skeleton Screens
Learn about what a skeleton screen UI is, and other types of skeleton screen libraries, along with their pros and cons. Traditionally, spinners and loaders have been a way of informing users that content would take a while to load. While that approach is fantastic, modern architecture is rapidly becoming obsolete.
Skeleton screens
are becoming the ideal substitute for conventional loaders, as they concentrate on progress rather than waiting times, reducing disappointment in loading-time.
The difference between a loader and a skeleton screen UI UI and UX experts tell us that we can keep them engaged while users wait for content to be loaded to a tab.The idea behind using spinners to engage users before content loads is great; however, the result could be less than ideal because most users may get bored staring at a dummy animated spinner like a clock is. That is what Luke Wroblewski elaborates about.Skeleton screens have a better user experience by raising annoyance with load-time. By concentrating on improvement rather than waiting times, it creates the impression for users that the information will be shown incrementally on the computer. This is confirmed by Bill Chung in his study. Define Skeleton Screen?A skeleton screen is a variant of the UI that does not contain actual content; rather, it imitates the layout of the page by showing its elements in a manner identical to the actual content as it loads and becomes accessible (i.e., when network latency allows).A skeleton screen is basically a website wireframe, with text and pictures in placeholder frames. Why is a Skeleton Screen different?A skeleton UI resembles the actual user interface on the website, so users can understand how soon the site or mobile device can load even before the content appears. Here are a few explanations of why you would want to consider using skeleton screens in your next project: • It's simpler to emulate a page's layout with a skeleton screen, • the material loads slowly (not all at once).Skeleton screens are often known as: • ghost components, • placeholders of content, • loaders of content.Blockchain.com, YouTube, Twitter, Medium, and other large-scale tech firms view skeleton screens as their content enhances the UX.
Types Of Skeleton ScreensThere are various types of screens with skeletons. The key ones are placeholders of text and placeholders of pictures (or color). Most developers tend to use text placeholders as the skeleton UI on their pages because they are easy to create, and the developer does not need any information about the actual content substance; instead, the skeleton imitates the UI.Color placeholders are more difficult to create since they require material information.Other common packages promote the implementation of skeleton screens in web apps. Let's take a closer look at Trigger Placeholder and Skeleton Reaction Ready. Before deciding which to use for our application, we will look at the pros and cons of each kit. React PlaceholderPROS • Components to the placeholder are used to build a custom skeleton UI.• Animation of the pulses (i.e. the effect of motion on the element) is assisted.• It comes with an API based on the components. CONS • Skeleton components are kept separately, so updating a component's styles can entail upgrading the skeleton component too. • The learning curve is not linear since multiple elements are required for different needs. React Loading SkeletonPROS• It is API-based and has one part for all customization with props.• It can be used as a separate part of the skeleton and also directly inside any part, so it is versatile.• Supports thematic and animated Pulse. CONS • For a basic skeleton UI it is easy to implement but difficult for more complex skeletons.• Having a different part of the skeleton would make it more difficult to manage as the UI and styles shift. How to create your own skeleton screen?Drawing the Skeletons in CSSNext, we will draw the basic shapes which will make up the skeleton of the deck. We can do this by adding various gradients to the image-background property. By nature, linear gradients extend from top to bottom, with various transitions to avoid colors. If we describe the only one-stop color and leave the rest translucent, we can draw shapes.Keep in mind that here are stacked on top of each other multiple background images, so the order is important. The last description of the gradient is at the back, the first at the top.
.skeleton { background-repeat: no-repeat; background-image: /* layer 2: avatar */ /* white circle with 16px radius */ radial-gradient(circle 16px, white 99%, transparent 0), /* layer 1: title */ /* white rectangle with 40px height */ linear-gradient(white 40px, transparent 0), /* layer 0: card bg */ /* gray rectangle that covers whole element */ linear-gradient(gray 100%, transparent 0); }
As with standard block-level components, these shapes extend to fill the entire room. If we want to change that, we need to define the dimensions explicitly for them. The value pairs set the width and height of each layer in background-size, keeping the same order we used in the background image:
.skeleton { background-size: 32px 32px, /* avatar */ 200px 40px, /* title */ 100% 100%; /* card bg */ }
The final step is the placement of the elements on the board. This works much like position: absolute, with values reflecting the property at the left and right. For example, we can simulate a 24px padding for the avatar and title, to suit the appearance of the actual content card.
.skeleton { background-position: 24px 24px, /* avatar */ 24px 200px, /* title */ 0 0; /* card bg */ }
Breaking it up with the Custom PropertiesIn a basic example, this works well-but if we try to create anything a little more complicated, the CSS quickly gets messy and very difficult to read. If that code had been given to another creator, they would have no idea where all those magic numbers come from. Having it sure would suck.Fortunately, we can now use custom CSS properties to write skeleton styles in a far more succinct, developer-friendly manner-and even take into account the relationship between different values:
.skeleton { /* define as separate properties */ --card-height: 340px; --card-padding:24px; --card-skeleton: linear-gradient(gray var(--card-height), transparent 0); --title-height: 32px; --title-width: 200px; --title-position: var(--card-padding) 180px; --title-skeleton: linear-gradient(white var(--title-height), transparent 0); --avatar-size: 32px; --avatar-position: var(--card-padding) var(--card-padding); --avatar-skeleton: radial-gradient( circle calc(var(--avatar-size) / 2), white 99%, transparent 0 ); /* now we can break the background up into individual shapes */ background-image: var(--avatar-skeleton), var(--title-skeleton), var(--card-skeleton); background-size: var(--avatar-size), var(--title-width) var(--title-height), 100% 100%; background-position: var(--avatar-position), var(--title-position), 0 0; }
Not only is this much more legible, it's also much easier to later change some of the values. Plus we can use some of the variables (think —avatar-size, —card-padding, etc.) to describe the individual card styles and keep it in line with the skeleton version at all times. It is now very easy to add a media question to change parts of the skeleton at different breakpoints too:
@media screen and (min-width: 47em) { :root { --card-padding: 32px; --card-height: 360px; } }
Adding AnimationsWe can animate our skeleton to make this even easier, and make it look more like a loading indicator. All we need to do is put a new gradient on top layer and then, with @keyframes, animate his location.
As a reputed Software Solutions Developer we have expertise in providing dedicated remote and outsourced technical resources for software services at very nominal cost.
