"I was bereft of words. I am still numb” says rape survivor Bilkis Bano after her culprits were released from jail

Lawyer Shobha Gupta on Wednesday stated on behalf of Bilkis Bano after 11 convicts serving life imprisonment for the post-Godhra Bilkis Bano gang-rape and murder of seven members of her family walked out of Godhra sub-jail. The decision was passed after the government’s remission policy. The lawyer said that the decision has shaken Bilkis’s faith in the Indian justice system.

Bano has urged the Gujarat government to ‘undo the harm’ and return her the right “right to live without fear and in peace”.

 #BilkisBano’s statement - “Today, I can say only this - how can justice for any woman end like this? I trusted the highest courts in our land. I trusted the system”. “Give me back my right to live without fear and in peace. Please ensure that my family and I are kept safe.”

"The release of these convicts has taken from me my peace and shaken my faith in justice. My sorrow and my wavering faith are not for myself alone but for every woman who is struggling for justice in courts," Bano made another statement.

"I was bereft of words. I am still numb. Today, I can say only this - how can justice for any woman end like this? I trusted the highest courts in our land. I trusted the system, and I was learning slowly to live with my trauma," she added.

"No one enquired about my safety and well-being, before taking such a big and unjust decision. I appeal to the Gujarat Government, please undo this harm. Give me back my right to live without fear and in peace. Please ensure that my family and I are kept safe," said Bano who was seven months with a child at the time she was raped and 7 members of her family were killed.

To avoid fraudulent sales of NRG properties, the state government has implemented procedures to prohibit the abuse of 'power of attorney' paperwork. 

This month, the revenue agency released two crucial circulars outlining the new processes. An NRG or individual residing outside the state who delegates authority to their agents to complete the sale of a property will now be required to provide extra paperwork proving that he or she was alive at the time of the transaction. A blood relative or a third party might serve as the representative. The notarized declaration must be submitted in a sealed envelope and unsealed only in front of the sub-registrar, according to the requirements.

Gujarat cabinet nod for Tata Motors' takeover of Ford India's Sanand plant

In a nod to Tata Motors' takeover of Ford India's passenger car manufacturing plant in Sanand, the Gujarat government's cabinet has issued a no-objection certificate to the former's proposal.

"The cabinet has issued a no-objection certificate to the takeover. It is now up to the companies to work out the nitty gritties," a senior government official told Business Standard.

According to the official, Tata Motors would continue to enjoy the incentives that were extended to Ford India.

A source in Tata Motors too confirmed the nod from Gujarat cabinet. A Tata Motors spokesperson declined to comment.

Now, Tata Motors is likely to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the same with Ford Motor Company after working out issues pertaining to the plant including labour issues and financials.

Tata Group had been meeting state governments of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu for a potential take over of Ford India's plants in the two states, after the latter had announced its exit from India last year.
