Regular Form: It's so strong that it can knock out some opponents in a single hit, but it also may forget what it's battling midfight.

Gulping Form: Cramorant is constantly on the hunt for food along riverbanks. It loves Arrokuda—when it finds them, it swallows them whole without a thought.

Gorging Form: Its throat is clearly not wide enough to swallow a Pikachu, and yet Cramorant makes no move to release its catch.

Which forms I included was somewhat arbitrary. Regional variants, megas, and gigantamax got automatic passes, but for other ones I had to be more specific. I couldn't include all of them, because some Pokémon (cough Alcremie cough) have so many forms they would overwhelm the entire tournament. A form had to be a) interestingly different, b) not change often, because that makes them basically a feature of a single Pokémon and c) not purely cosmetic to be included. Since castform can become any of the forms basically at will, I didn't include them. The forms I didn't include, as far as I remember:

There is a bunch of arbitrariness here. I did allow Spiky Eared Pichu in. I included the two Basculins purely because I considered White Stripe different enough as a regional variant (Still, the Shellos line has no such excuse). I remembered Hoopa's forms when I had already queued up a bunch, and I figured nobody would notice because like hell I was going to reorganize everything and besides, they were up against Johto legendaries and Hoenn starters.

Normal Form: It's so strong that it can knock out some opponents in a single hit, but it also may forget what it's battling midfight. This hungry Pokemon swallows Arrokuda whole. Occasionally, it makes a mistake and tries to swallow a Pokémon other than its preferred prey.

Gulping Form: Cramorant's gluttony led it to try to swallow an Arrokuda whole, which in turn led to Cramorant getting an Arrokuda stuck in its throat.The slightest shock is sometimes enough to get this Pokemon to spit out the Arrokuda lodged in its throat.

Gorging Form: This Cramorant has accidentally gotten a Pikachu lodged in its gullet. Cramorant is choking a little, but it isn't really bothered. The half-swallowed Pikachu is so startled that it isn't struggling yet, but it's still looking for a chance to strike back.

Cramorant is the only pokemon with the ability Gulp Missile (When the Pokemon uses Surf or Dive, it will come back with prey. When it takes damage, it will spit out the prey to attack.)

Arrowkuda and/or Barraskewda? I didn't really like them at first, but now I absolutely adore them!

Arrokuda!!!

Arrokuda’s a little barracuda pokemon, predictably Water-type, and it’s one I haven’t given much thought to prior to this review. It’s actually super cute though, and the design feels wonderfully organic! And it’s amazing how much character that curly little smile gives it.

The dex says it’s extremely sensitive to movement, and if it sees any, it’ll immediately charge for it with its sharply pointed jaw in the lead. Apparently “it’s very proud of that jaw”, which is ADORABLE. Like. This lil guy is so happy that its jaw is so pointy. I’d be proud too if that was my jaw. Speed is understandably its highest stat; it looks incredibly streamlined, the pointy jaw especially. That said, however, its movements become exceedingly sluggish after eating. And then……

AAAAAAAAAAAHH!!!!!!

Arrokuda is one of the few pokemon to canonically be part of a predator-prey relationship, which is actually incorporated in-game through Cramorant’s “Gulping Form”. In this form, Cramorant has an Arrokuda stuck in its throat, triggered by the use of Surf or Dive. It’s dislodged as a projectile when Cramorant is attacked as a function of its Gulp Missile ability, dealing damage to the attacker and lowering their defence. Arrokuda is presumably not fond of the whole situation, but that’s never really addressed.

Arrokuda has a lovely indigo shiny, a welcome change for those who prefer something more outlandish than the natural browns. I personally prefer the base form because of how distinct it is for a fish pokemon, but this is definitely a fantastic shiny.

Overall, Arrokuda’s a deceptively great pokemon. It’s easy to overlook (so much so there’s no currently gifs of it on tumblr’s gif search), but its design is actually impeccable, and it’s got a TON of personality packed in that succulent little body. An intensely underrated little fish.

New pokemon and forms:

Cramorant is a flying/water type pokemon with the ability Gulp Missile. If the pokemon uses Surf or Dive, it catches a fish in its mouth and spits it at any pokemon that deals damage to Cramorant.

Polteageist is a ghost type pokemon with the ability Weak Armor.

Alcremie has a large number of variations based on different berries and flavors. Over 20 forms have been confirmed so far.

New features:

Camping is an upgraded version of Pokemon Amie and Refresh from the 3DS era. In your camp you can play and cook with your pokemon as well as with other players. You can also visit other players’ camps that show up in the Wild Area. This works both wirelessly and through the internet.

League cards are stylized highlight pictures of your trainer character. You get to customize it and show it off in link battles or trade with other players. The cards are made using Rotomi in any pokemon center. Some NPCs have league cards of their own.

Surprise trades replace Wonder trade from the 3DS era. With surprise trades you pick a pokemon to send and can keep playing the game while the system looks for a trade partner in the background. You can also do surprise trades with people nearby if your wifi is turned off.

New customization options:

Eyebrow thickness and color is customizable

Female characters can customize their mascara (was available in XY but was exclusive to PR videos)

The Cramorant plushies give me mixed feelings.They went far enough to make it the Gulping Form seen above as well as its regular status...

...But going by these images the Arrokuda is sewn in and likely headless.In a way I guess this is more of how I remember a lot of stuffed animals applying the use of magnets and velcro from childhood and slightly beyond(I think that stuff has been toned down in more recent years thanks to technology growing).I also guess I kind of wish they made a version where Pikachu is in the beak given that is supposed to be a thing this bird is occasionally guilty of.

I said it back around the time it was first revealed and I’ll say it again...

I see you have seen Cramorant's Gorging form. Yes, it is a form. It has two and other is called Gulping form. It is so wild and strange when it has a Pikachu in it's mouth and also uses Pikachu as a attack by shooting it from it's mouth to only have Pikachu returning to it's mouth.

it startled me so much bc I didn’t know it could do that and also I was afraid it would eat the pikachu like a berry to regain health

               Behold! The first Pokémon to be reviewed under this rebooted era of Poke-Reviews! And also the first Pokémon reviewed from the new Sword and Shield Pokémon games! I do love a two-for-one deal.

               Quick aside for anyone who doesn’t know my style for reviewing Pokémon. I generally give fun facts about the Pokémon and my feelings on them. Then I move into discussing their Stats, Move list, and Abilities. All of these come together to inform you if a Pokémon is worth raising or if using it is a waste of time. (If you like a Pokémon reviewed negatively that’s fine).

               Anyway, Cramorant was first introduced in one of the many, many trailers that preceded Pokémon Sword and Shield. And I fell in love instantly. Something about its derpy face, color pallet, and slightly Dodo bird inspired design won my heart over to this goof.

               Now Water/Flying isn’t a unique typing for Pokémon in the slightest. It has two weaknesses (Rock and Electric) but, unfortunately, they are both very common types to run into. In addition, this bird has a quad weakness to electric types and will go down faster than the Arrokunda these things like to eat.

               For those of you just joining me, here is how I rank a Pokémon’s stats. First off, these stats are based off a Pokémon’s Base Stat total which is how a Pokémon would look like without factoring in specialized breeding, training, natures, and IV’s. Base Stat totals run between 1 and 255.

               How I rank a Pokémon’s worth based off these stats go as follows: 1-50 are bad. 51-80 are average. 81-100 are good. And 101-255 are the best. Keep in mind, very few Pokémon even make it to 255.

               With that said, Cramorant is a very well rounded, but barely above average according to my scale. Many competitive players might ignore this bird in favor of other Water/Flying types like Gyrados, Mantine, and…Swanna, but I happen to like these stats.

               The even Atk and Sp. Atk stats means you can pick and choose how you raise this bird whether you want a brawler or ranged fighter. The Sp. Def being…honestly a surprisingly high stats. Its gives Cramorant more versatility for switch ins to possibly tank a Sp.Atk from your opponent.

               Speed is technically above average but there are tons of Pokémon who naturally out speed my blue bird. While playing the campaign of Pokémon Shield, there were plenty of fights where Cramorant was four levels higher than his opponent, but they were still running circles around him. I did give my bird a Choice Scarf (an item that drastically increases your Pokémon’s speed), but that also runs the problem that whoever uses a Choice Scarf is stuck with only one move until you switch or they faint.

               Like I said, these stats may be to spread out for most hardcore competitive people. I admittedly don’t know much about competitive play, but from what little I do know, most players Pokémon choices seem to depend on having two really high stats as opposed the four above average stats this one has.

               But, I prefer a Pokémon with a lot of options to use than having one with only one use and Cramorant fits that bill to the T.

               Move-Wise:

               While there isn’t as much variety in this ones moves, Cramorant still has a number of moves that can be used to make it an effective fighter.

               It has access to the three move combination of Stockpile, Swallow, and Spit up. Stockpile can be used three times in a row, raising ones Def and Sp.Def each time. From there you can either keep that Pokémon as a tank or use the other two moves. Spit-Up hurls all the stored power at the opponent and does damage equal to the number of Stockpiles done while Swallow heals the user for how many Stockpiles done. These moves are all normal type, by the way, and can be powerful, but you don’t get the same type attack bonus from it.

               The rest of the moves Cramorant learns naturally are the likes of Thrash, Dive, Drill Peck, and Hydro Pump. All of these are just flat out damage dealers which wouldn’t be a problem, but they focus more on making a physical attacker when Cramorant’s stats can support a special attack style as well.

               The TMs and TRs pick up this specific slack with a lot more options to turn Cramorant into a special attacker. Moves like Surf, Air Slash, Hurricane, Ice Beam, and Icy Wind. There are also more physical moves that can give birdy boy a slight edge over its weaknesses like Substitute to block Electric attacks and Steel Wing to damage Rock types.

               Ability-Wise: Gulp Missile

               Cramorant only has one ability but believe me, it is a bit of a doozy. First off, Gulp Missile can only be activated after using the moves Dive or Surf which can be a problem. While these are good moves, if you are anything like me, you try to have moves that cover a lot of types of Pokémon your opponent could be using and maybe you want the strongest water attacks to get the most out of Cramorant. But you have to use these two moves if you want the ability which could be limiting.

               I do think it’s worth it though. See, after using one of these moves Cramorant enters one of two forms depending on its health.

               Gulping Form becomes active if Cramorant has more than half its health. A fish gets caught in the bird’s mouth. Gorging form is active if you have less than half of this Pokémon’s total health and the fish is replaced with a Pikachu. A very confused Pikachu who doesn’t try to escape its fate.

               Once in these forms, Cramorant hangs onto its poor victim until the opponent hits it with an attack. Upon taking damage, Cramorant immediately shoots the Pokémon caught in its throat and dealing damage to the opponent equal to ¼ of the opponent’s total health.

               This alone can force your opponent to make a hasty decision unless they are that far ahead of you. Perhaps their Pokémon is low health, they beat your bird, but it shoots its load and takes the opponent with it.

               In case the opponent’s Pokémon doesn’t fall, two things can happen. In Gulping Form, the fish that is shot out lowers the opponents Defense making them more susceptible to attacks and in Gorging Form the Pikachu that is shot paralyzes the opponent which not only means there is a 25% chance that they can’t attack, but it also slows down the opposing Pokémon.

                 All in all, there are worse choices you can pick for your team. I think with a combination of Gulp Missile and the uncertainty of how you will fight would be enough to make your opponent second guess themselves and even if they don’t it will still be a fun ride for you.

Regular Form: Cramorant instinctively swallow everything whole. They're at their most formidable when they're struggling to swallow overly large prey. It's an incredibly poor learner because it uses the bare minimum amount of energy for its brain. It focuses on battling instead.

Gulping Form: Cramorant is constantly on the hunt for food along riverbanks. It loves Arrokuda when it finds them, it swallows them whole without a thought. Cramorant takes advantage of Arrokuda's frantic thrashing to help spit Arrokuda out at high speed.

Gorging Form: Its throat is clearly not wide enough to swallow a Pikachu, and yet Cramorant makes no move to release its catch. With a Pikachu stuck in its throat, Cramorant can use Pikachu's prickling electricity to give its opponents a shock.

Cramorant is the only pokemon to have the ability Gulp Missile (When the pokemon uses Surf or Dive, it will come back with prey. When it takes damage, it will spit out the prey to attack).
