I don’t know why anyone believes anything Casca, Guts or Griffith say about relationships. Like none of these people have ever had a hug since childhood (and even then that might just be Casca) that didn’t cause them to question why this person is doing this, and what it means. 

Guts fully believing Griffith during the Promrose speech? Completely tracks. Guts doesn’t believe he is special, and openly questions why he is ever treated remotely as such by Grif, so no shit he’s gonna believe his bestie trying to talk a big game to a princess.

But the reader believing Griffith in that moment? I mean come on. By this point we know that Griffith acts irrationally for Guts, and that his words mean much less than his actions. He will continue to say there no reason to save Guts, but then plan around the mans actions, and basically sacrifice himself for him. He comes back from important meetings with nobles once he has the news that Guts and Casca are okay so he can see them. 

Not to mention that like 6 chapters after the Promrose speech you get Casca backstory, and her explaining what Griffith has done for the army.

 How can anyone believe anything that Griffith has said when he’s just putting up a front to try and avoid being vulnerable. Like talk about falling for his act I guess.

One thing I think we as a fandom need to start acknowledging more is that the way Griffith was with Guts was always unhealthy. I see so many people asking why Guts walked away from him and I don't see many people pointing out the way Griffith talked about him. There was more often than not an objectifying tone there ("I want you" "You belong to me" "I decide when you die for me" etc).

I do think Griffith had a level of admiration for Guts, but ultimately he talked about and treated the guy like a tool or a weapon and that's not a healthy foundation for a friendship. Guts knew he had to discover what he wanted out of life before any kind of healthy friendship could develop. I know Guts is stubborn and impulsive, but this was NOT him being stubborn and impulsive. It was actually one of the healthiest, most rational decisions he's made.

It was about what he said to Charlotte, yes, but it was more than that. Griffith's conversation with Charlotte was just a brutal show of the larger problems with their friendship that simply could not have been fixed with a heart to heart. Remember, Griffith is very charismatic and good at using words to get what he wants. Settling for reassurance with no changed behavior, which is likely what Guts would have gotten, would not have fixed any of these problems.

I see a lot of people ask why Guts didn't just talk to Griffith about the conversation with Charlotte as if it was a one off event. It wasn't. It was a wake up call to Guts about the larger problems with their friendship and I don't think the fandom always sees that those problems were there from the start. They were. From the moment Griffith first spoke to Guts they were.
