Teena through Zouey's eyes - Famous artworks and movies in Playboyy the Series - Part 1

My art historian ass couldn't help but notice that a few references to famous works of art have been inserted into the Teena-Zouey scenes. This was most likely done, because we see Teena through Zouey's eyes and that boy undoubtedly has an artist's point of view.

We'll probably get a couple more scenes like these in future episodes. I'm expecting something like Michelangelo's David or maybe some classical sculptures. Vermeer's Girl with the Pearl Earring or Gustav Klimt's The Kiss would also work, I think.

 Gwen joins spider society and Hobie is quickly tapped to help her cope with the loss of her home.

(Hobie hasn’t really told any of the other spiders about his personal life but they’d known from the moment they recruited him that he was always on the side of the little guy, the disenfranchised, anyone who needed someone on their side)

That’s how they got him to join in the first place after all

As soon as he found out they were after a YOUNG BLACK BOY he was knew he’d need to bide his time, join up, and help this kid

He played nice for the most part, all talk of anarchy to avoid suspicion but generally good about following orders when they were given (meanwhile he spent all his spare time studying his watch, toying with it, figuring out how it worked)

Anyway, he hears Gwen’s story and even though he has a big secret at home, he knows he can’t just leave this girl to live in spider HQ (and it the not so tender mercies of Miguel and Jess) 

He explains to gwen that he’ll let her crash, but she has to swear she’ll keep his secret for him

That secret being you, of course. 

See, he’d been working to avoid a “canon event” since before Miguel put a name to it and told him that it was something every spider had to expect

He was never much of a fan of labels, but Hobie’s enemies are more than just superpowered maniacs; he’s on no small amount of government watchlists 

For that reason, Hobie insists that your relationship with Spider-Man and Hobie Brown are both kept secret. That means all of your dates are in abandoned buildings, on rooftops, and in general far away from where anyone could catch you two together

After hearing of the fate of many of the spiders’ lovers, you were pretty on board with it (unbeknownst to Hobie, you’d be fine with it before because that was Hobie’s condition to be with you and not being with him simply wasn’t an option for you at that point)

Gwen can tell Miles is jealous once he realizes that she’d been staying with Hobie, but she promised Hobie she’d help maintain your secret. Besides, she really liked you and didn’t want anything bad happening to you either

I typically just post the movie's poster (although I'm thinking of possibly considering clips, because a similar account on Twitter did that). Along with the post, there's an emoji, serving as a mod tag. If you see ☠️ on the post, that's me (I'm Gwen, BTW)! On the other hand, if you see 🦝 on the post, that means it was a submission from my friend Jade, who co-ran the Twitter account with me starting in April (I can't give her the password to this blog because my main is tied to it, but I still wanted her to be involved). I KINDA SORTA take requests? Typically I only post things I or Jade have seen, but I'll post stuff I haven't seen if you pester me enough (almost everything I haven't seen gets added to my watchlist tho). Some quick reboot ficlet. Kevin has not-technically-professional pride and the Tennysons aren't paid enough.

Normally, thefts that didn’t happen in his vicinity weren’t Ben’s problem. He was only one person, after all, and a trouble magnet all on his own. The idea that on top of everything he should be running himself ragged worrying about random crimes wherever just wasn’t viable. So, he wasn’t about to pay much attention to an electronics shop getting robbed. A hardware store. Auto shop. Another electronics store. At that point he and Gwen had been forced to share a look, check social media, and go a-hunting.

A low whistle told him she had at least half a clue what the mass of metal and circuitry Kevin was hip-deep in was about, which made one of them.

“If you didn’t bring a sandwich or Starbucks, fuck off.” Once upon a time, that would’ve gotten Ben’s hackles up, but after a few years you got used to Kevin and used to how he could be in the throes of a project.

“We don’t negotiate with criminals,” he said, by this point not just a lie but a damned lie. “Do we even want to know what you’re doing.”

“I want to know what he’s doing,” Gwen cut in. Rolling his eyes, Ben grumbled under his breath and got elbowed in the arm for it. “I least promise it’s not something that’ll put you on a watchlist.” Kevin snorted, refusing to look up from whatever it was he was fiddling with.

“If I’m not already on a watchlist I’ve been doing something wrong.”

“Thanks Gwen,” Ben said, elbowing her back. “He’s going to get involved in terrorism next.”

“Everybody needs a hobby,” Kevin said, shrugging. With a heave of a sigh, Gwen shook her head and went to find a place to sit down.

“The two of you are going to give me high blood pressure… Do we get to know what your latest string of robberies is for or not?” Humming, Kevin finally stepped back, pulling out a rag to wipe his hands on.

“Do you guys remember the mess with the Twains last month,” he asked. The cousins immediately understood everything, were halfway through rolling their eyes and groaning when he turned a smirk their way. “Somebody has to show how that pile of scrap they were flaunting should really work.”

How do you feel about various sexualized female alien designs in the show and in fanart ? Do you wish they go for a more “non-human” look ?

I’ll start off by saying I don’t think there’s really anything wrong with giving characters feminine attributes, even aliens.

However

Oversexualization is an overdone and outdated way to design ALL of your female characters, and same goes to aliens. Variety keeps things interesting and I don’t think the cosmos would completely adhere to our definition of femininity. I think It’s much more egregious in fan art than canon, over exaggerating things like tits and asses, clearly just being horny on main. You can be whatever you’re into, just leave kids out of it. I hate the fact I can’t look up Gwen 10 aliens without worrying I’ll be on some FBI watchlist.

Speaking of Gwen 10, they’ve shown us they can give us alien designs that match up with the male counterparts without them being carbon copies, but having small details differentiating them. I think her versions of Heatblast and Diamondhead are solid examples of translating designs to the opposite gender.

Hell, I even like how in OV they keep her hair clip, freckles, and/or eyelashes on a few of them. Sure, they might be stereotypical feminine traits, but depending on the alien and for a more stylized cartoon it kinda works?

Others like…her Grey Matter with her bright Orange hair…not so much.

And unfortunately, they push it by UAF/OV (the latter being the guiltier party), giving non-mammalian forms things like breasts or hourglass body shapes, when the alien they’re supposed to represent (at least the male form) isn’t really even humanoid, or just has more interesting proportions. I don’t really see why a dinosaur or plant alien needs mammary glands to convey they’re female?

I enjoy Derrick Wyatt’s work a lot and I respect him for what he’s contributed, dealing with the worst part of the fandom and returning to give us more stuff we kinda don’t deserve. That being said…I’m not a huge fan of how a good portion of the female characters have a near identical body type in the show, alien designs included. Comparing Subdora and ChamAlien’s designs…ChamAlien almost looks a bit deformed compared to her.

(Man needs to see a chiropractor, got scoliosis like the dickens)

I get stylization, I get corporate execs don’t like it when things don’t conform cause they can’t sell their precious product, and I even get having “a type”, but I feel like there are work-arounds from making designs that feel…just so gratuitous.

What I’ve been watching:

Gambit (dir. Ronald Neame, 1966)

This movie gets compared to How to Steal a Million often since it’s a genre-bending heist/romcom but it has its own unique vibe. The romance between Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine is less steamy than what we got between Peter O’Toole and Audrey Hepburn, but they still have great chemistry. The plot involves Caine’s cocky cat burglar trying to pull off the perfect heist with MacLaine’s aid—only he might actually be the worst con-man in the world, constantly misreading and underestimating his marks. It turned out to be much better than I expected—highly recommended if you liked HTSAM.

Dial M for Murder (dir. Alfred Hitchcock, 1954) [rewatch]

On my first watch, I agreed with Hitchcock on this one: too talky and more of a technical exercise than an engaging suspense plot. However, I rewatched Dial M recently and enjoyed it a lot more. Ray Milland’s performance has a lot more subtleties than I originally picked up on: his expressions, his ironic line delivery, and his use of props are all on point. I also had much more appreciation for the clever camerawork and the performance of John Williams as Inspector Hubbard. While I still don’t consider it top tier Hitchcock, it’s definitely more fascinating than it initially seems.

What Lies Beneath (dir. Robert Zemekis, 2000)

Sorry to say I was disappointed. I love me a good Hitchcockian thriller, but this one had two problems for me: it’s way too long and there are too many fake-out jump scares. Were it not for those issues, I would have probably enjoyed this one more, because the acting and atmosphere are genuinely impressive. And the last twist did actually get me, so kudos there.

3 Bad Men (dir. John Ford, 1926)

I’ve been trying to watch more westerns recently. It’s not a genre I’m especially familiar with, but I find the mythology behind the western as a genre rather fascinating, especially in how the western has crossbred with other genres (samurai films, space operas, etc.). This silent western from John Ford probably doesn’t count among his career best, but I liked it a lot. I love eccentric criminals in my movies and the titular “bad men” are a trio of oddball thieves out to rescue a town from a corrupt sheriff. There’s a lot of humor here, but the ending is genuinely powerful and dramatic.

Damn Yankees (dir. Stanley Donen, 1958)

I’m by no means a Stanley Donen expert, but of all his work, I found Damn Yankees the most underwhelming. Gwen Verdon is about the only reason to watch: she just glows. The plot itself is flimsy and aside from “What Lola Wants,” I cannot hum any of the other songs.

Ella Cinders (dir. Alfred E. Green, 1926)

This is a silent film you hear about when you first become a fandom novice. Just about every silent movie nerd watched Kevin Brownlow’s Hollywood documentary series and Ella Cinders is featured prominently in one episode, so it’s been on my watchlist for about a decade now. The film itself is a cute trifle elevated by Colleen Moore, perhaps my favorite silent movie comedienne. She’s playing a comic strip character and just brims with cartoonish energy. She’s so adorable that I wish the movie was longer and had a less episodic plot, but maybe that comes with adapting a newspaper comic strip.

Fedora (dir. Billy Wilder, 1978)

Oh God. BAD. This was b-a-d, BAD. I cannot believe I am saying that about a Billy Wilder movie. The guy is a favorite of mine. His weaker movies tend to be underwhelming rather than rotten, but this—oh man, it’s like a burlesque on Sunset Blvd, only sleazier, poorly paced, and packed with characters who commit the mortal sin of being simultaneously uninteresting and unsympathetic.

Basically, Not-Joe-Gillis, a washed-up Hollywood producer, goes to a remote island to lure Fedora, an Old Hollywood movie goddess, out of retirement. She’s basically a Greta Garbo expy who has somehow defied the aging process. She’s interested in his new version of Anna Karenina, but her servants, personal doctor, and the severe Polish countess she lives with basically tell her no and keep her a prisoner. Shortly after, Not-Joe learns Fedora has committed suicide and then learns her dreadful secret.

Needless to say, learning the twist is not worth the watch, especially because you can guess the twist within the first half hour of the movie. The whole movie feels like unintentional camp—and worse, like a sleazy, cheaply made TV movie. There’s a smallness to the film’s presentation that does not jibe with the outlandish plot and grand figures of Hollywood’s past. The only interest it has is as a time capsule, giving us a glimpse of an Old Hollywood giant yearning for the past and resenting the present (Not-Joe laments that “the kids with the beards” have taken over the movie industry). Like Fedora herself, the film comes off as pathetic rather than ironic or bittersweet.

hey, anon, i could take you on the familiar spiral of shows that everyone has watched (twice), so let me recommend some that no one ever watched/watches and are either cancelled after one/two seasons or just started (and no one ever talks about them). cause i think it’s a shame and maybe you’ll discover something cool here...

now, anon, you didn’t specify the genre, so i’m just gonna throw here everything. here is my 10 shows, that you might want to check out:

origin (2018, YouTube) - brilliant sci-fi. 10/10 recommend, forever bitter they cancelled it after 1 season natalie tena, tom felton reunited after hp. sen mitsuji being flawless and eye candy. he... he is a lot... like *coughs*

dominion (2014-2015, SyFy) - angels, apocalypse, season 2 is great, so of course they cancelled it. it was a great ride

kings (2009, NBC) - fictional modern day kingdom and david & goliath re-telling. baby sebastian stan, playing gay spoiled prince. no one watched this. no one. and yet it’s probably one of the best shows i’ve ever seen. great soundtrack btw

avenue 5 (2020-, HBO) - surpise surpsise, this one is renewed for season 2! hugh laurie. space ship. there is a main character with a name of karen, who is the quintessential “karen”. mix of the good place and veep in space. love it.

mercy street (2016-2017, PBS) - in case there is too much sci-fi for you, here is a period drama. totally overlooked. you never find it on anyones watchlists from some reason. cancelled after 2 season, civil war and mary elizabeth winstead with josh radnor play the ship

legend of the seeker (2008-2010, ABC) - i don’t even want to talk about this. the betrayal of cancelling this show is still real after 12 years. i don’t think there was fantasy show since then this good (except maybe merlin)

once upon a time in wonderland (2013, ABC) - the overlooked spin off of OUAT, that was actually better, cohesive and they cancelled it after one season. of course. cyrus/alice was the true love. (not the mention super cute)

ravenswood (2013, Freeform) - boy was i upset in 2013. pretty little liars spin off, that was better and more interesting and that’s why they cancelled it. ghosts and past lives? i ate it up.

condor (2018 -, Audience) - 2 seasons and not cancelled. based on ‘three days of condor’ - you know, someone killed people and someone else takes blame and runs. max irons in a spy drama. i dig it.

blood & treasure (2019-, CBS) - you know, how you wish how the mummy never ended and how relic hunters is the best show ever and indiana jones is the best movie and lara croft the best game and... yeah, so this isn’t it, but they try and sofie pernas is hella cute. (fyi, ignore the lexi/danny romance and ship lexi with gwen instead -> it’s better)

Gavin Newsom already has announced all schools will be remote unless they see downward trend within a 14 day period and are removed from the states watchlist. That goes for public and private. LA county is on the list and is the hotspot in CA now. So the boys aren’t doing any in person learning. At least not to begin the school year. And if they do, based on current status, it would be against a governor mandate

Oh, is it the same for private schools? I’m sure it’s different in different states but where I am tons of parents are enrolling their kids in private schools since public are online this semester. I guess as a way to get around it. But I thought it was strange because what if you are a private school parent who isn’t down with in-person classes? Enroll in public? I guess you’d save a lot of money 😂. How many days until 2020 is over? At least we have Gwen and Blake on the Voice to get us through the final stretch!

1. When did you start watching Torchwood and what (or who) got you to start watching?

December 17, 2016. (yes I do know the exact date.....) It had been in my watchlist for like 2 years at that point, but I never watched because I knew nothing about it, besides the fact that it existed. That weekend I was bored and didn’t want to study, so I decided to give it a go and here I am.

2. What is your go-to episode to watch when you’re feeling down/bored and why?

KKBB. It just The Best episode of all times.

3. Which of the TW villains/aliens/whatevers did you find the scariest and why?

Adam, and here is why!

4. If you had to pick 2 characters to do a BF audio, who would it be and what would it be about?

Since Ianto and Owen is now a thing that is happening, I’ll go with more Jack and Ianto (just give me some domestic relationship fluff or something) AND an audio with Tosh and Owen (PRETENDING THEIR DATE DID ACTUALLY HAPPEN)

5. What is your favourite fanfic-trope to read/write?

Soulmate AU’s and coffeeshop AU’s

6. If you could assemble your own TW team (post-CoE) with canon characters from the extended Who-niverse (any show related to DW), who would be in it?

Martha and Mickey, Clara, Donna, and I would say Kate and Osgood, but they need good UNIT contacts, so these two are gonna stay were they are. Also maybe Tanya and April. (NOT Ram though. That guy needs a vacation far far away from any aliens and all things terrible)

7. A question you would like to ask the actors on a panel (assume they are all present :p)

uhhhhhh good question. I really don’t know. (sorry!)

8. If there was another season and they would do a crossover with any show/movie/book/whatever of your choosing for 1 episode, what would it be and why?

Star Trek. Torchwood a few hundred years in the future, cooperating with Starfleet, maybe getting in the way of each other every now and then, but generally working well together? AND Men in Black. Both have such good crossover potential don’t you think?

9. If you were to find out tomorrow that Torchwood is real and Jack is leading a Torchwood team in your home city, how would you convince him to let you join them?

Oh god, I don’t know. Definitely not for field work, I think. Maybe as an achivist though.

10. How would you recast the original Torchwood team? (Jack, Owen, Tosh, Ianto and Gwen)

I really don’t think there’s anyone else who could do these characters justice.

11. If you could pick any author to write a Torchwood novel, who would it be and why?

I think Chris Chibnall writing another Torchwood story would be super neat. Also Scott Handcock, because Cascade was brilliant and I’d love to read more Torchwood stories from him. I’d also love to read more from Juno Dawson, afterall she wrote one of my favourite episodes in AAU *-* And please don’t ever let anyone stop James Goss from writing Torchwood.
