character study. (alice and adam. brooklyn, new york.)
she doesn't wait for a hello.
"i have something of yours," alice says when he picks up the phone.
it's just past midnight - an odd hour for anyone to be calling, much less alice, of all people. they haven't spoken at all since the other night when he drove her home. up until that night, he'd been making progress; he'd finally started to get used to not talking to her, only for her to call when he least expected it. so much for progress.
"what's that?" adam replies hoarsely, like he's just woken up.
"your jacket." she pauses. "i forgot to give it back the other night."
he'd forgotten about it too, to be fair. now, his mind is wandering; he's recalling the image of her, frail and shivering, tucked away in his worn out leather jacket. it'll probably smell like her now - that light, floral perfume she always wears that has a name he can't pronounce. he tried to push the thought out of his mind.
"that's alright, i know it's in safe hands." he exhales a deep breath. "you can pass it on to jodes if you wanna and i'll get it back."
alice is silent on the other end. adam feels his pulse quicken.
"okay," she says finally.
"cool. whenever's good for you."
quiet, again. that's the thing about alice that kills him - her innate ability to prolong silence for as long possible. he wonders sometimes if she knows, if she does it purpose just to spite him. there's a lump in his throat; he worries if he speaks, it will dislodge and all come spilling out, both the things he wants to say and the things he shouldn't.
"adam?"
his breath hitches in his throat.
"yeah?"
he can hear her breathing on the other end; he tries not think about how close it sounds next to his ear. he bites down on his tongue.
"thank you," alice's voice echoes on the other end, soft and melancholic, the way she gets when she's thinking about something other than the topic at hand. he wants desperately wants to pry, to know, to unravel all her thoughts and figure her out. he's never had much patient for puzzles, but he thinks maybe, he would if it were her.
"it's cool." he doesn't dare ask.
there's a sound on the other end, alice sighing. she sounds tired, more than usual. he wants to ask if she's been sleeping well, if she's been eating.
"it's late," he says.
"oh," she sounds as though she's only just realized this. "sorry. i've been writing."
he wants to know what she's been writing about, he wishes he could read every word she's ever written and bury himself in all her intimate thoughts.
"it's okay, i was up anyways. just thought you might be tired."
they're both quiet now. for once, adam feels like he has nothing to say, or rather that he's forgotten how to speak. he hears footsteps on the other end - alice pacing around the room.
"i should go then," her voice cracks slightly. it feels likes a knife in his gut.
adam finds himself clutching onto the phone tighter. he worries, that if he hangs up now, it'll be the last time she'll ever speak to him.
"it's okay - i can stay up, if you wanna talk a bit." he hears the desperation in his own voice, regretting it immediately.
"no, i should really go."
there's a sinking feeling in his stomach, like an open pit.
"okay." he knows better than to ask her to stay, to do anything other than let her go. "yeah, we can talk another time. if you want."
she pauses again. he wonders if there's some reluctance on her end, if she's just thinking of a polite way to turn him down.
"yeah," alice replies after a minute. "maybe."
he knows she doesn't mean it like that, but the echo of that maybe is almost enough to give him false hope. the pit in his stomach grows wider, deeper; it may very well swallow him up.
"adam?"
"yeah?"
"happy birthday."
deafening silence. he forgets what he's supposed to say (thank you would be appropriate, but it doesn't come to mind at the moment) and lets the silence sit with them for too long.
"bye adam," she says.
before he can get another word in, there's a click and a dial tone, and she's gone.

There's something about the tmagp characters' motivations, and who they're willing to sacrifice, and how the people or things they prioritise act towards them, and how it goes for them.
Because
Celia is willing to sacrifice Sam, who loves her and who she genuinely does care about, to stay with Jack. And then there's a moment where she isn't sure she can go through with it, and she loses him anyway without having to act, and she'll probably never know exactly what choice she would have made in the end, even though she's consciously planned this for weeks.
Alice straight up abandons Teddy and Colin, who are both Not Doing Well, when they are explicitly asking her for help, to go and protect Sam, who has told her not to come after him. It's barely a decision for her - she quite clearly stops thinking about anything or anyone else.
Sam finds out that Celia betrayed him and STILL puts himself in danger to protect her. And ends up falling through the gap to another world, which is exactly what she was planning to do to him.
Gwen throws Lena under the bus the moment the opportunity comes up, purely for the sake of her own ambition, which is part of a broader pattern of decisions. And it's immediately obvious when she gets what she wanted that it's only going to go badly for her.
Idk idk it's the love and the need and the want of it all, and the ruthlessness that can come out of it, and the way they make or don't make their choices, and the consequences of it aaaaaa

things heartstopper does brilliantly because i refuse to let some of you monsters ruin it for everyone
1. models healthy consent practices!! oh my goodness!! asking to kiss, double checking that consent is enthusiastic, being honest about moments that lacked consent (see: b*n h*pe and imogen asking out nick). later in the books we get even more amazing examples of consent being an ongoing conversation!!
2. the teenagers act their age!! they’re awkward, they’re confused, they’re unsure of themselves, they are PLAYED BY YOUNG ACTORS!!! it’s realistic and beautiful and doesn’t set unreasonable expectations for viewers like almost every other show about high schoolers
3. SUPPORTIVE PARENTS!!! all of the parents we have met so far have been loving, supportive, compassionate, and patient. it’s so nice to have multiple queer and trans characters who are embraced by their parents and their friend’s parents from the beginning. and tao’s mom is an icon.
4. safe people and places!! the characters have trusted adults like mr. ajayi and mrs. singh and safe places like the art room that they can go to when things are rough. it models healthy support network building and healthy coping skills!!!
5. all the ways you can come out and be out!! it tells a beautiful “coming out isn’t always easy and it’s never the end of the journey” story without making coming out seem like a disaster waiting to happen. yes, charlie was outed - and people still jumped to his aid even before nick came around. no one pressures nick to come out (a major story arc some of y’all clearly didnt pay attention to) and they tell him it’s fine if he doesn’t know what to label his sexuality if he even wants to label it at all.
6. LETTING. BOYS. CRY. oh my god it’s so refreshing to see a show where boys get to cry instead of punching walls. and not once does someone tell them crying makes them less masculine. no one tells anyone to stop crying. they’re allowed to be emotional and it’s wonderful.
7. affection. i adore the way this show portrays all the small ways you can say “i love you”: a homemade picture frame, buying your apple juice every day, waiting until you’re ready, taking you to the beach, bringing over cookies for movie night, bringing their dog to the date to cheer you up, running over in the rain, punching someone in the face for you.
feel free to add more!!! i just want to highlight the best parts of this show + graphic novel series because it really is a masterpiece. i hope kit (and the rest of the cast and crew) knows that he’s doing a good job - a great job - and that no one else’s shitty behavior can change that.

alice was homeschooled from seventh to twelfth grade, but if she had gone to public school, she would have been that one girl everyone is just a little bit unnerved by - not necessarily disliked, but the girl everyone knew was weird and didn't make an effort to talk to. she would have carried around a copy of hamlet (highlights and margin notes and all) every day, listening to jeff buckley cassette tapes because she found a walkman on the bus once and just decided it belonged to her, worn a victorian locket with a lock of hair in it that she got at a thrift store that has since closed down, was best friends with the english teacher, despised by history and math teachers, and also she sat by herself doing crosswords and did not socialize at the only sleepover she's ever been invited to.
