A fantastic performance from the late, great, Hadyn Gwynne from the 1993 London production of "City of Angels"

The musical's plot concerns a writer, Stine, and his fictional noir detective, Stone, and the impact each has on the other as Stine is trying to write a movie using Stone. The real world interacts with the "story within a story", and vice versa, to entertaining, if sometimes complicated effect.

Stine bases a lot of the characters on the people he sees around him in the real world and this means that, like most of the cast, Hadyn Gwynne plays two roles; "Oolie", Stone's loyal "girl friday" in the movie script, and "Donna", the secretary to the film's director who Oolie is based on.

So Gwynne gets to, essentially, sing a two part song with herself in both roles, as they each bemoan their crummy taste in men. Oolie's diatribe against her boss (who is totally oblivious to her love for him), switching to Donna regretting her tendency to bad one night stands.

In a very nice touch, "story within a story" scenes are in black and white (or as close as they can get), "real world" scene are in colour. The sets were done in greyscale , with warm colours projected on to them when the real world kicked in.

Given I only knew Hadyn Gwynne from her role in sitcom "Drop the Dead Donkey" I was absolutely floored by her voice. (For a clearer version of the audio, though with no visuals, here's the soundtrack track.)

(Last one cause I don't want to be a bother.) Sir Handel is capable of mimicing the calls of a falcon. Other engines have claimed to hear him communicating with falcons but he denies this whenever asked.

i started off my grocery trip today by getting THIS CLOSE to buying basil hadyn for the express purpose of making french onion soup and i think i put a curse on myself. i got so flustered with the self-checkout i forgot to pay for my cat litter, which i had only gone in to get because i had a two dollar coupon. couldve been worse but lord almighty

Absolutely!

For classic music: Passacaglia by Handel/Halvorsen; Nocturne by Chopin; Moonlight by Beethoven; Lacrimosa by Mozart; Dining with Lectre by Peter Gundry; Bach's Tocatta and Fugue in D minor. Also Bach's Prelude for Lute in C minor. Basically anything Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Claude Debussy, Hadyn, Wagner, Chopin, Giazotto, Schumann, and Lizst.

For modern music : Anything by Hozier, The Gang of Youths, songs like The Cult of Dionysus by The Orion Express, and Brutus by The Buttress. Some of Lorde, Ethel Cain, some Lana del Rey, also Sufjan Stevens for his really sad tracks.

For movie soundtracks: Pride and Prejudice 2005, Maurice (1987), Penny Dreadful' (2014 - 2016), Black Swan (2010), Jane Eyre 2011, Portrait of a Lady on Fire 2019, The Theory of Everything (2014), Kill Your Darlings (2013), Ginger and Rosa, Wuthering Heights 2011, Little Women 2019, The Young Victoria, The Duchess, Belle. Just to name a few!

hi hi i'm getting into classical music again and i'm curious would you happen to have any recs? (composers or pieces or otherwise, from any time periods or cultures) 👀

Some of the best starts for getting into classical music is guys like Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven. They're the greats for a reason.

Other good composers from various eras include Brahms, Arvo Pärt, Debussy, Ravel, Hadyn, Chopin, Britten, and Stravinsky.

I don't really have the time at the moment to go really in depth about each composer and their works, but those names should suffice for a quick YouTube search or Spotify or whatever media you listen to music on.

I'll try to make a post later that's a little more in-depth.
