Week 2:  Unveiling the Seven AFL commentators 2022
Tumblr media
PR Campaign:
This week my attention was drawn to an activity related to the Seven network and their commentary team. Hence, the PR campaign I want to examine this week will hinge on the unveiling of the 2022 AFL broadcast commentary team by the Seven network. The main factions of this campaign were Daisy Pearce taking the lead role with AFL legend Wayne Carey pushed further aside for Saturday night fixtures and the introduction of Shaun Burgoyne into the commentary team. Daisy Pearce who is a current WAFL player and a future first ballot Hall of famer will serve as an expert commentator on the team after winning the best analysis award at last years media awards. The former Port Adelaide and four-time Hawthorn premiership hero Shaun Burgoyne will join the team as a commentator and play by play analysist. The last inclusion to this team is Chris Johnson, a former player of the Brisbane Lions. These new faces will add to established household names such as Brian Taylor popularly known as BT, Luke Darcy, Hamish McLachlan and James Brayshaw among others.
Tumblr media
Image: Shaun Burgoyne unveiled as part of the commentary team
Orchestrating the campaign and the entities involved
This campaign was organised by the Seven Network specifically Seven Sports.
PR Tools:
This campaign was launched exclusively through the Seven media broadcasting network. Prior to the opening rounds of the season, the network used it platform to unveil its new and exciting cast of the AFL commentary team. Seven sports under the Seven network were particularly responsible for launching this campaign through it shows and advertising channels.
Tumblr media
How the PR Campaign was utilised:
This campaigned was clearly run under the auspices of Seven network through Seven sports. The network used it broadcasting channels to launch this campaign to its followers and listeners. Both seven network and Seven sports used their social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to launch this campaign. During advertising breaks, the network would run a piece on the campaign actively engaging and seeking out its audience to this campaign. The network also used it sister radio stations in each state to also promote this campaign.
Opinion Piece:
This is a PR campaign I would like to dissect and look closer at how it impacted the Seven network image and personality. Personally, I loved the idea of headlining Daisy Pearce as the lead role in the commentary team. This PR campaign enhanced the image of Seven network with sporting fans around the world. The move was clearly researched and liked among the footy community as Daisy had picked up the best analysis award the previous year in the media awards hence creating a positive image in her new role. I personally think this PR move was long overdue by media outlets around the nation and specifically Seven network. The network has been abysmal in the women inclusion to sports programs and shows across their platforms. There is more room for improvement but clearly this is step in the right direction. The campaign was well organised and clearly well run. I felt it enhanced the image of the network among footy lovers and will open more opportunities for female personalities within that industry.

The 11thand final PR campaign that I have chosen is the AVIA Vitality ‘Last time I cried’ segment on the AFL app. The campaign is based around the ever-growing issue in today’s society which is men’s mental health.
Tumblr media
The segment is presented by well-known media personal Hamish MacLauchlan whom interviews well-known AFL personal and asks them the simple question ‘When was the last time you cried’. This question then ends up being a discussion surrounding mental health and the ability that although these people are seen as ‘living the dream’ as they are elite athletes living their dreams they can also suffer mentally.
The PR tool that the AFL have implemented is using social media by using a spokesperson by generating awareness of mental health. The first spokesperson in the series was Ex Hawthorn and Gold Coast player Campbell Brown. Brown has since moved into the media spotlight as he has become a regular face throughout both the AFL season and the Spring Racing Carnival. Using Brown as the spokesperson is a great start for this AFL PR series as they realise this is a time where mental health should be at the forefront of everyone’s minds.
Tumblr media
A friend of mine sent a link through Instagram to the video that the AFL promoted through their social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and both their own website and app. Once viewing the content, I shared it to numerous friends and family as it showed my own story is relatable to these sporting stars and what they have undergone.
Artefacts.

Harry Potter AU Characters
This is my interpretation of what the characters would be like in the Harry Potter Universe.
William Sherlock Scott Holmes
Tumblr media
-Blood Status: Pureblood
-Wand: Ten inches, Blackthorn, Dragon Heartstring
-Best Class(es): Ancient Runes, Muggle Studies
-House: Ravenclaw (The sorting hat had a hatstall between Ravenclaw and Slytherin but Sherlock refused to go to Slytherin because that was the house his brother, Mycroft, had been in and he refused to be in the same house as his brother)
-Patronus: Otter
-Quidditch: Uninterested Bystander
-Blood Status: Pure Blood
-Bio: Sherlock got his acceptance letter on the day his brother accepted a position in the Ministry of Magic. Overshadowing his brother’s achievement because he had shown no exceptional magical talent from an early age. But what he lacked in magical talent he made up for in intelligence. So he was sorted into Ravenclaw house. He comes off as very cold and distant and did not have many (any) friends until his third year when he met John Watson in Care of Magical Creatures after being assigned a partner. He is a pureblood and his family has a rich history in the fifteen pureblood families, although he despises the pureblood status and will often not tell people that he is related to a person of high power in the Ministry. During the First Wizarding War he joined the Order of Phoenix with John against his parents wishes and has had a rocky relationship with them since.
John Hamish Watson
Tumblr media
-Blood Status: Muggleborn
-House: Gryffindor
-Wand: Nine inches, Rosewood, Unicorn Hair
-Best Class(es): Care of Magical Creatures, Divination
- Patronus: Hedgehog
-Quidditch: Enthusiastic Bystander
-Bio: John received his letter a week before his eleventh birthday. His parents were surprised and pleased that they had a wizard for a son, while his older sister, Harriet, was jealous. When he was sorted the hat had a hatstall between Hufflepuff and Gryffindor. In the end the hat chose bravery over loyalty, and placed him in Gryffindor. He had a couple o f friends but in third year he met Sherlock Holmes in Care of Magical Creatures. After he had graduated from Hogwarts, the First Wizarding War began. He became a member of the Order of Phoenix and fought hard. He was shot in the leg by a spell that broke the bone and when it was healed, it didn’t heal right, causing him to have a limp.
Samuel Jonathan “Sam” Winchester
Tumblr media
-Blood Status: Half-blood
-House: Ravenclaw
-Best Class: Transfiguration
-Wand: Twelve inches, Rowan, Kneazle Whiskers
-Patronus: Moose
-Quidditch: Chaser
-Bio: After Sam got his letter his father was disappointed. He did not have “normal” sons. Which caused his sons to grow apart from him and close to each other. It also caused them to distance themselves from their classmates. Sam was very studious in his years at Hogwarts and was one of the top in his class. He achieved Prefect in fifth year and got high grades in his OWLS and NEWTS. After Hogwarts he joined the Order of Phoenix and became good friends with James Potter and his wife, Lily. He was devastated when they were killed by He-who-Must-Not-Be-Named. He became the DADA professor in Harry’s second year and met the son of James and Lily twelve years after their death. When the Second Wizarding War started he valiantly gave his life in he battle of Hogwarts. Dean was devastated.
Dean Alexander Winchester
Tumblr media
-Blood Status: Half-Blood (Mother was a witch, Father was a muggle)
-House: Gryffindor (the sorting hat barely touched his head before it called out Gryffindor)
-Best Class(es): Defense Against the Dark Arts
-Wand: Eleven inches, Cherry, Phoenix Feather
-Patronus: Squirrel
-Quidditch: Chaser
-Bio: Dean’s mother did not tell his father that she was a witch and Dean’s father only discovered her secret after she was killed by dark wizards. He hoped that his children would never become wizards and was disappointed when Dean got his letter a month before his eleventh birthday. Dean was sorted into Gryffindor before the hat even touched his head. He became a very good student in Defense Against the Dark Arts. He had some friends but he met his best friends, Castiel, in fourth year. Castiel was a third year Hufflepuff who was able to summon a full patronus at the age of thirteen. After Hogwarts he became an Auror. When the first Wizarding War started he became a member of the Order of Phoenix and hunted down Death Eaters with his brother until the end of the war.
  Castiel Grigori “Cass” Scamander
Tumblr media
-Blood Status: Half-blood
-House: Hufflepuff
-Best Class(es): Muggle Studies, Care of Magical Creatures
-Wand: Thirteen inches, Willow, Unicorn Hair
-Quidditch: Chaser
-Bio: Castiel was born to a wizard father and an overly religious muggle mother. She named him after the angel that presided over Thursdays. Castiel’s father did not tell his mother that he was a wizard until they had Castiel. This caused his mother to become angered at Cass’ father but since she did not believe in divorce she decided to stay with him, at least until Cass was old enough to take him away from his father. After Castiel got his letter for Hogwarts, three days before his eleventh birthday, his mother decided to leave them the day after he received his letter. She could not deal with having a wizard son, something she believed was one of the most evil beings in the world. Castiel was devastated to lose his mother and vowed never to fall in love or get married after she left. He had seen what the years had done to his parents and he leaving the the final knife in the coffin. He excelled at muggle studies and care of magical creatures. And he especially loved to study and take care of the magical creatures in his class. Many people said that he would become a magizoologist, like his uncle, Newt Scamander. In his third year he met Dean Winchester, a fourth year Gryffindor who was one of the chasers on their team and was fawned over by all the girls. They had a strong bond that turned into an even stronger friendship. In Castiel’s sixth year he realized that he had developed feelings for Dean but because of his promise to himself he refused to act upon those feelings. After school they kept in touch but did not see each other often. Castiel traveled the world with his uncle’s case collecting new species to add to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
 Jonathan Alexander “John” Mitchell
Tumblr media
-Blood Status: Half-Blood
-House: Slytherin
-Best Class(es): Potions
-Wand: Eight inches, Ebony, Veela Hair
-Patronus: Bat
-Quidditch: Keeper
-Bio: John, known as Mitchell to his friends, got his letter the day before his eleventh birthday. Much to the surprise of his parents who did not expect anything from him because he did not show that much magical talent. His mother, a member of the noble Black family, was cast out after she married a muggleborn. She tried to divorce her husband but found out she was pregnant with John. So she is very cold and distant towards him because he is keeping her in an unhappy marriage. John was sorted into Slytherin almost immediately and thrived at Potions. He was known as one of the bad boys throughout the school. His closest friend was George Sands, a Hufflepuff, in the same year as him. After graduating Hogwarts his mother forced him to join the Dark Lord as a Death Eater and during the war he  was bitten by a vampire and changed.
  George Sands Jr.
Tumblr media
-Blood Status: Pureblood
-House: Hufflepuff
-Best Class(es): Charms
-Wand: Ten inches, Hawthorn, Kelpie Hair
-Patronus: Arctic Wolf
-Quidditch: Apathetic Bystander
-Bio: George got his letter on the eve of the full moon, a full three months before his eleventh birthday, His parents were overjoyed but fearful. George had been attacked by a notorious werewolf for some offensive language his father had used in the Leaky Cauldron. Although Dumbledore assured them that he would be safe and that Hogwarts had another student with Lycanthropy. They were still worried that he would attack a classmate or faculty member. When he was sorted the hat stayed on his head for a good five minutes before it decided to place him in Hufflepuff.  He excelled at Charms and became prefect in fifth year. Although he did sometimes get into trouble with Mitchell. After Hogwarts he became the DADA professor for a year and then joined the Order of Phoenix to fight the Dark Lord.
Jackson Alexander “Jack” Sparrow
Tumblr media
-Blood Status: Half-blood
-House: Slytherin
-Best Class(es): Arithmancy
-Wand: Ten inches, Aspen, Dragon Heartstring
-Quidditch: Beater
-Bio: Jack was born to a muggleborn wizard and a pureblood witch, who was born into the Black family. He was an unusual child. He though outside the box and constantly focused on stuff that his mother would deem stupid. Jack received his letter three weeks after his eleventh birthday and both of his parents were overjoyed. When he arrived at Hogwarts, he was sorted into Slytherin for his cunning wit and deceit, inherited from his mother, that allowed him to attain his goals. He loved going to school, especially when he was able to prank other kids in Hogwarts. He gave the Marauders a run for their money. After school his parents (his mother in particular) convinced him to join the Dark Lord. He became a Death Eater for a time but renounced it after the Dark Lord fell.
Robert Franklin Jackaby (It’s a really good book, you should go check it out)
-Blood Status: Half-blood
-House: Ravenclaw
-Best Class(es): Divination
-Wand: Fifteen inches, Ash, Unicorn Hair
-Quidditch: Semi-interested Bystander
-Bio: Born to a muggle father and a witch mother, Robert from an early age showed signs of being abnormal. In the wizarding sense, at least, he talked about creatures that no one else could see and talked to “imaginary friends” that when he told his family had the same stories and names as their deceased family members. When he turned seven, his mother was killed by Death Eaters and Robert’s father tried his best to raise him in a somewhat ordinary manner. hen Robert got his letter for Hogwarts his father was pleasantly surprised but also overjoyed. He was sorted into Ravenclaw immediately and then became friends with Sherlock, who was in the same house but a year older. They both admired each other’s intellect, but Sherlock thought he was a little weird when he would sputter off about nargles or other animals that Sherlock knew were definitely not real. Not many people called him Robert, many called him Jackaby and after Hogwarts, when he began writing novels and textbooks for the Wizarding World he used the name R. F. Jackaby. He became an investigator of paranormal that could not be explained by the Wizarding World and was followed closely by a young muggleborn witch named Abigail Rook.
  Bruce Oliver Wayne
Tumblr media
-Blood Status: Half Blood
-House: Ravenclaw
-Best Class(es): Study of Ancient Runes
-Wand: Eleven inches, English Oak, Dragon Heartstring
-Quidditch: Seeker
-Bio: Born to a pureblood witch and a muggleborn wizard, Bruce was the only child in his family. Both of his parents died when he was a young boy and the muggle butler, Alfred, raised Bruce. When he turned eleven he received his acceptance letter to Hogwarts. At first, Alfred was confused but then he realized what it was and told Bruce why his parents had died, protecting what they believed in. He was sorted into Ravenclaw for his intellect and tried out for the Quidditch in second year when he became seeker. After school he joined the Order of Phoenix to stop Voldemort and his Death Eaters.

2019 GET SERIOUS State of Origin teams
LONG this column has advocated for the return of State of Origin. But alas, and it’s a strong rebuttal, the logistics of such a revival make for work too hard.
However, ten-game Big V veteran Garry Lyon last week on football’s preeminent analysis program Front Bar, when asked by the game’s best, hard-hitting journalist Mick Molloy, certainly promoted the naming of a team even if such a fixture wasn’t to be held.
“Answer me this Garry, why don’t they still just symbolically hand out the jumper?” Molloy poised.
“They should,” the five-time All Australian, former Demon captain responded.
“Even if they don’t play,” Molloy continued, “like they do All-Australian, here’s our Big V best 22 of the year, because that would still mean something.”
“It should be on their resume, at the end of their footy career, (for example) Patrick Cripps, he is a Western Australian, he should be a (hypothetical) eleven-time Western Australian player, and I’m (really big on that); and (Marcus) Bontempelli should be recognised as Victorian player,” Lyon suggested.
Mick. Garry. Next time we get a beer the first one is one me. What common sense!
So, without further ado, and to be honest these teams where in the can for this week anyway but the timing from the lads last Thursday is just gravy, let’s name the 2019 teams for the three main states (sorry Tassie), as if they were to actually pull on the boots.
Therefore, unlike the All-Australian team which is constructed for naming-sake only, knowing there are no repercussions for picking players out of position – this is the opposite.
In an ideal world, and anyone who knows this column well, we’d have a game in March to look forward to, so we’re pretending at least that this is the case.
Alrighty, no more dribble, here’s South Australia:
FB: Rory Laird (Adelaide) – Phil Davis (GWS) – Shannon Hurn (West Coast, captain)
HB: Hamish Hartlett (Port Adelaide) – Tom Jonas (Port Adelaide) – Ryan Burton (Port Adelaide)
C: Brad Ebert (Port Adelaide) – Shane Edwards (Richmond) – Jared Polec (North Melbourne)
HF: Lincoln McCarthy (Brisbane) – Tim O’Brien (Hawthorn) – Connor Rozee (Port Adelaide)
FF: Orazio Fantasia (Essendon) – Darcy Fogarty (Adelaide) – Paul Puopolo (Hawthorn)
Foll: Brodie Grundy (Collingwood) – Chad Wingard (Hawthorn) – Lachie Neale (Brisbane)
Inter: Jack Redden (West Coast), Bryce Gibbs (Adelaide), Shaun Burgoyne (Hawthorn), Jack Graham (Richmond)
Not their strongest side in their history but still an interesting one. Totally bereft of key position talent but O’Brien and Fogarty the last month saved the selectors bacon, otherwise it was picking a ruckman out of position or putting all the eggs in the Justin Westhoff basket.
Onball ain’t super strong but with Grundy and still some decent players its competitive at least, and the backline is pretty robust, not short on talent even if not at the level of the other two teams below.
In truth there were a few too many drafts the last five-seven years without top-end SA talent but the last few drafts have plenty so come back in a few years and this team looks a lot better. Now the Vics:
FB: Tom Stewart (Geelong) – Michael Hurley (Essendon) – Nick Vlaustin (Richmond)
HB: Lachie Whitfield (GWS) – Robbie Tarrant (North Melbourne) – James Sicily (Hawthorn)
C: Jackson Macrae (Footscray) – Dustin Martin (Richmond) – Steele Sidebottom (Collingwood)
HF: Robbie Gray (Port Adelaide) – Tom Lynch (Richmond) – Gary Ablett (Geelong)
FF: Jordan De Goey (Collingwood) – Jeremy Cameron (GWS) – Toby Greene (GWS)
Foll: Max Gawn (Melbourne) – Marcus Bontempelli (Footscray) – Patrick Dangerfield (Geelong)
Inter: Luke Shuey (West Coast), Josh Kelly (GWS), Ben Cunnington (North Melbourne), Travis Boak (Port Adelaide, captain)
Lots of stiff blokes here. Houli gets pipped by Whitfield, Houli had the better year but we’d prefer Whitfield if we’re actually playing a game next March. Vlaustin picks himself for a pocket. Stewart and Sicily in the same team is bananas
Treloar, Worpel, the list goes on for stiff blokes in that midfield. But wanted to pick some inside blokes as we’re planning for a ‘real game’ so Cunnington and Boak get a Guernsey.
Lynch demands centre-half-forward and can relieve Gawn in the ruck for all of a few minutes when needed, otherwise it’s a forward line where everyone is the best in their respective position. Now for their equals right now, the Sandgropers:
FB: Ben Stratton (Hawthorn) – Alex Rance (Richmond) – Brad Sheppard (West Coast)
HB: Lewis Jetta (West Coast) – Jeremy McGovern (West Coast) – Jason Johannisen (Footscray)
C: Mitch Duncan (Geelong) – Nat Fyfe (Fremantle, captain) – Bradley Hill (Fremantle)
HF: Lance Franklin (Sydney) – Rory Lobb (Fremantle) – Michael Walters (Fremantle)
FF: Jack Darling (West Coast) – Josh Kennedy (West Coast) – Liam Ryan (West Coast)
Foll: Nic Naitanui (West Coast) – Patrick Cripps (Carlton) – Tom Mitchell (Hawthorn)
Inter: Tim Kelly (Geelong), Stephen Coniglio (GWS), Elliott Yeo (West Coast) Jaeger O’Meara (Hawthorn)
Right, this team beats the Big V, it just does. And its arguably the state’s best ever team, that we’ll never see. Firstly, yes, Lobb, have to pick him to relieve Naitanui and to be honest, as centre-half-forward, his best footy at the Giants before moving home certainly can’t be scratched at. Plus Buddy at this age is more than happy to dominate the arc
Midfield is ridiculous. O’Meara as the eighth wheel, Jesus Christ.
And the backline balances shutdown and elite speed of half back with the best contested mark in the country at centre-half-back.
Insane team.

Power's show of support as defender takes time out
Ken Hinkley says Port Adelaide will throw its arms around defender Matthew Broadbent and returning Hamish Hartlett ahead of Saturdays clash against Fremantle in Perth. The club announced on Thursday 28-year-old Broadbent had been granted an indefinite leave of absence from football to focus on his mental health and wellbeing. It is just a month after the veteran returned from a horror run of injuries for his first AFL game in 647 days against Adelaide in Showdown 46.

media_cameraMatthew Broadbent of the Power gets a kick away ahead of Hawthorns Paul Puopolo. Picture: AAP Image/Julian Smith Broadbent will replaced in the Power side to take on the Dockers by Hamish Hartlett, who will play his first game in 15 months following a knee reconstruction and hamstring injuries. Matty has been brave enough to talk about some of his issues and we understand them. It doesnt discriminate, mental health, Hinkley said. We need to continue to get better as an industry but we have certainly come a long way. People are more prepared to talk about it, which is a positive. The Powers general manager of football Chris Davies earlier said the defenders health and wellbeing was the primary focus. Matthew is a valued player, teammate and person at the Port Adelaide Football Club. At this point, the best option for his overall health is to step away from the game for a while, Davies said. The clubs primary focus is on Matthews health and welfare and we will continue to provide him with the ongoing support he requires. We cant say at this point how long that will be but he will be given as long as he needs. The announcement comes in the same week St Kildas four-time best and fairest Jack Steven returned to training for the first time since Round 6 after taking time off to deal with a mental health issue. Hinkley said Hartletts teammates were excited to have their vice-captain back in the line-up. We are so pleased to see Hamish Hartlett back in the side. He has had some setbacks but we just love the way he goes about it. He plays football the way it should be played, said Hinkley. Tom Rockliff will miss a second game with a hamstring injury. We will let it play out and he will be back as soon as he can, said Hinkley of Rockliff. You dont have to struggle alone. "Really is the cheapest of cheap" - Many West Brom fans react to Matt Wilson update
The circus that has unravelled since Darren Moore’s sacking at West Brom has left fans of the club on Twitter bemused as some supporters now see the only viable managerial option as James Shan, the current caretaker boss.
Shan has guided the club to two wins from his two games in charge, leaving certain individuals under the impression that with seemingly no plan in place, he would be the best bet until the end of the season.
This comes after an update from the Express & Star’s Matt Wilson suggested that Preston wanted to keep hold of Baggies target Alex Neil.
West Brom are fighting for promotion and sit in 4th place in the Championship. But despite their good league position, the Hawthorns faithful have been left angry over a lack of developments in their search for a new permanent manager.
The recent news led to one supporter claiming the list of targets wasn’t very exciting, arguing that because things hadn’t been sorted, it now looked likely Shan would keep the job.
Some reaction has seen supporters urge for the 40-year-old to be kept until the end of the season. That’s before appointing someone like Slavisa Jokanovic when the club will have a better idea of what division they’ll be in.
Was Darren Moore’s sacking unfair? The Pl>ymaker FC squad name which Championship bosses should have gone instead in the video below…
A specific individual claimed the club should bring back Gary Megson to link up with Shan whilst another hoped no one would come into work alongside him, citing the poor relationship the club had with Graeme Jones, assistant manager to Moore.
Here’s what was said about Shan and the current situation after Wilson’s update hit Twitter…
Give it Shan to the end of the season and bring someone in during the summer. No pressure then and we’ll know what division we are in.
— Bomber’s Boots (@BombersBoots) March 19, 2019
Personally, just give it Shan until the end of the season and then appoint Joka or Neil so they have a full season to bring their style of play into the club etc. How high are the chances of Shan until end of the season Matt?
— John (@Johntur01) March 18, 2019
Just bring Megson back to work alongside Shan for the season.
Jokanovic will want to start a new style of football with old players. Feels like Groundhog Day.
— Brad (@brada_wba) March 19, 2019
Personally think the last thing we need is somebody coming in above Shan and dictating to him what he should do similar to Jones with Moore.
— Hamish Colley (@colley_hamish) March 18, 2019
Not a very exciting list of candidates is it really, rowett, Alex Neill, Appleton my days ?‍♂️ it really is the cheapest of cheap options. This should have been sorted well before now longer it does go on more likely Shan will keep job until seasons end
— Andrew Grainger (@andrew_grainger) March 18, 2019
Would be happy for Shan to take charge for the rest of the season if we were guaranteed a new manager begin work from the final whistle of the season. Because promoted or not we are going to need it! For me Jokanovic still seems the best option but wouldn’t say no Neil.

GWS Giants beat AFL premiers Richmond Tigers as Essendon, Melbourne and Brisbane post wins
Updated July 14, 2018 22:41:25 Map: Brisbane 4000 GWS claims the scalp of premiers Richmond by just two points in a thriller in Sydney, while Essendon, Melbourne and Brisbane also record wins. Quick navigation Giants edge out fast-finishing Tigers
Tumblr media
Photo: The Giants and Tigers contest for the ball during their encounter in Sydney. (AAP: Craig Golding) The GWS Giants have pipped Richmond by two points, showcasing their premiership credentials while extending the reigning premiers' miserable record outside Victoria. The Giants stormed back into the top eight on Saturday night, resisting a fight-back in the final quarter to triumph 11.13 (79) to 10.17 (77). Richmond youngster Shai Bolton put his set shot out on the full with two minutes left in a thrilling re-match of last year's MCG preliminary final. Veteran Tigers forward Jack Riewoldt then gave his side hope of snatching victory, snapping truly to trim the hosts' lead to a point with 26 seconds remaining. The Tigers could not win the all-important final clearance, with Dylan Shiel showing great composure when it mattered most. Toby Greene, playing his first game after spending almost three months on the sidelines because of a foot injury, kicked GWS's only goal of the final quarter. It was a clutch effort from deep in the pocket. The upset win, inspired by superb games from GWS stars Stephen Coniglio, Heath Shaw, Callan Ward and Lachie Whitfield, could also have major ramifications in the race for the minor premiership. External Link:GWS v Richmond summary The winner of Sunday's contest between Collingwood and West Coast will equal the ladder-leading Tigers on 48 premiership points, as will Port Adelaide if it defeats Fremantle. Based on Richmond's away record this season, the flag favourites will be keen to secure a home qualifying final as they seek to go back to back. All four of the Tigers' losses this season have now come away from Melbourne, although they were far from disgraced in Homebush - booting four of the game's final five goals. The visitors had a severe case of the yips but none more so than Jason Castagna, who finished with five behinds and put another set shot out on the full. External Link:GWS v Richmond stats Richmond lacked its trademark polish most of the night, especially in front of goals, but rallied whenever the Giants threatened to kick clear. GWS, whose slick ball movement overwhelmed the Tigers' defence early, opened up a 21-point in the first quarter and a 24-point buffer in the third term. First-year player Zac Langdon dobbed three goals as GWS proved it can kick a winning score without either Jeremy Cameron or Jon Patton, while Daniel Rioli finished with three goals for Richmond. GWS, whose campaign was on the cusp of full-blown crisis in May after a month-long losing streak, next face the Power at Adelaide Oval. Bombers run away from tiring Suns
Tumblr media
Photo: Tom Bellchambers of the Bombers takes a mark during the round 17 AFL match against the Suns in Carrara on July 14, 2018. (AAP: Dave Hunt) Essendon has done enough after a sluggish start to avoid an upset loss to Gold Coast in Carrara and keep its finals hopes alive. Needing a win to stay within reach of the top eight, the Bombers misfired early to trail by five at the break on Saturday night. But the tiring Suns could not go with them and Essendon prevailed 13.17 (95) to 6.15 (51) as the Coast managed just 16 points after half-time. Essendon was off the boil in the opening half and the Suns hungrier, as they threatened to end a 10-game losing streak and sink the Bombers' season. But the visitors shot to the lead immediately after the main break through Darcy Parish before Mitch Brown's left-foot snap edged them further ahead. External Link:Gold Coast v Essendon summary Mark Baguley (three goals) then marked strongly before kicking his second to shoot clear and allow the Bombers to cruise through the final quarter. Michael Hurley was good early for Essendon, while Dyson Heppell and Zach Merrett finished with 36 touches each and former Sun Adam Saad was not missed in his first visit back to the Gold Coast. Suns workhorse Nick Holman hassled Saad to good effect in the first half and kicked three on his way to being one of the host's best. Gold Coast captain Steven May (hip) struggled through the second half in what could be more bad news for the 3-13 side. External Link:Gold Coast v Essendon stats Neither side could hit a target early, with even the shortest of kicks sprayed on a relatively cold night. Bomber Shaun McKernan broke the deadlock with the game's first goal after 14 minutes before Devon Smith provided some welcome polish. Smith trapped, ducked a tackle and curled a grubbing kick from the pocket for a champagne goal that defied an otherwise sloppy contest. The Suns then got their teeth into the game, Aaron Young kicking the first of his two goals before Holman opened his account. The Suns' 4.11 first half wasn't as wasteful as it read but there were enough costly misses to ensure a five-point buffer was quickly swallowed up. Demons down Dogs but concerns for Viney
Tumblr media
Photo: Jordan Roughead (L) contests the ruck against Max Gawn at the MCG. (AAP: Hamish Blair) A stunning third-quarter blitz has propelled Melbourne to an emphatic 50-point win over the Western Bulldogs at the MCG. But the Demons' delight at Saturday's 18.11 (119) to 10.9 (69) win was tempered by the late withdrawal of co-captain Jack Viney, who has suffered a recurrence of a toe injury. Viney's start to the season was delayed until round nine by a stress fracture and he has reported soreness in the same area. Scans have not discovered a new fracture but Melbourne are unable to say when he will return to the field. The tough onballer was sorely missed in the first half at the MCG. External Link:Melbourne v Western Bulldogs summary But after leading by just three points at half-time, the Demons set up their 10th win of the season with a blistering burst of seven unanswered goals. Angus Brayshaw and Clayton Oliver picked up the slack in Viney's absence with 39 and 34 possessions respectively. Max Gawn was the dominant ruckman on the ground with 41 hit-outs and Jesse Hogan led the way in attack with four goals. For the Bulldogs, Jack Macrae had 33 touches in his first game back from a hamstring injury, with Mitch Wallis (29 disposals and three goals) and Lachie Hunter (35 possessions) also prominent for Luke Beveridge's side. External Link:Melbourne v Western Bulldogs stats Wallis kicked two goals in a bright opening term by the Bulldogs that saw them lead by three points at the first break. Both sides were guilty of inaccuracy in front of goal in the second quarter but the Demons were able to edge their noses in front by three points at half-time. The Bulldogs, out of the finals race in 14th spot on the ladder heading into the game, have been the worst third-quarter performer in the competition this season and they went missing after the re-start once again. Patrick Lipinski actually gave the Bulldogs back the lead with the first goal of the second half but the Demons replied, with the next seven majors coming in a devastating 12-minute burst. The margin was 30 points at three-quarter time and the Demons cruised to the finish line for an important win as they chase their first finals appearance since 2006. Lions beat Hawks to make it three straight wins
Tumblr media
Photo: Hawthorn's Tom Mitchell (R) is wrapped up by Brisbane's Jarrod Berry. (AAP: Julian Smith) Brisbane has stunned Hawthorn and given the Hawks' AFL finals aspirations a serious hit with a 33-point win in Launceston. The Lions attacked the ball harder than the Hawks in the 15.8.98 to 9.11.65 victory on Saturday afternoon - their third in a row. Young guns Cameron Rayner and Eric Hipwood booted three goals each, including crucial majors at the beginning of the fourth quarter. External Link:Hawthorn v Brisbane summary In match that ebbed and flowed, the Lions held a 72-64 lead heading into the final term, when they ran rampant. The Hawks managed only one point in the last quarter, while the Lions booted the last six goals of the match. The win was made even more impressive in the absence of star Luke Hodge, who was a late withdrawal with a sore calf. External Link:Hawthorn v Brisbane stats Dayne Beams was one of the best on ground with 33 possessions, seven clearances and two goal assists. Hawthorn was eighth going into the round but could drop as low as 10th after its second loss in three games. Tom Mitchell finished with a game-high 43 touches but was kept quiet in the second half after racking up 29 of those by the main break. Jaeger O'Meara was the top goalkicker for Hawthorn with four but none came in the final quarter when the Hawks needed it the most. PORT Adelaide no longer has to listen to the negatives. The Power can win without All-Australian ruckman Patrick Ryder – and it finally has a top-eight scalp.
This double Easter treat comes with the Power scoring a stirring 23-point win against the AFL powerhouse that has troubled Port Adelaide most – Sydney at the SCG, the venue where it has had little success.
And this defining victory – to give the Power a 2-0 start to the new season – gives new credence to coach Ken Hinkley’s mantra that he has a team that never gives up.
RE-CAP ALL THE SUNDAY FOOTY ACTION IN THE BLOG BELOW
Hinkley’s greatest joy – on a night when he out-thought Swans premiership mentor John Longmire and bravely stood by young defender Dougal Howard in a key match-up with Lance Franklin – was how the Power overcome a horrible first half.
“We got a bit dirty,” Hinkley said. “We got down and got our hands on the ball.”
“Ollie Wines turned into a beast,” said Hinkley of the Power vice-captain who won 12 clearances and worked tirelessly for his 19 contested possessions.

Sydney led the Power by just 14 points at half-time despite significant advantages in the key performance indicators of clearances (32-23), contested football (92-74), hit-outs (34-22) and, most worryingly, inside-50s (35-14).
“As bad as the contest looked in the first half – and the scoreboard was flattering – there was a willingness to hang in there,” said Hinkley of his team’s reluctance to fold under pressure.
“This is a competitive group knew they had not matched Sydney anywhere near them for inside-strength. We dodged, well not dodged, we defended a lot of entries – and our young back line did a great job to hang in (by conceding just six first-half goals).
“There were so many positives in the second half – it was outstanding.”

STAND-IN COACH PROUD OF EAGLES FOCUS
Shayne Hope
Stand-in West Coast coach Jaymie Graham praised his players’ ability to stand up and execute the game plan in Adam Simpson’s absence after a comprehensive 51-point thrashing of the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium.
The regular forwards coach was handed the lead role just a few hours before bouncedown after Simpson rushed home from Melbourne on Saturday night to be with his sick daughter, who was hospitalized over the weekend.
The unwelcome drama threatened to derail the Eagles’ preparations.
But senior leaders Shannon Hurn, Luke Shuey and Nic Naitanui set the tone as a band of youngsters brought enthusiasm to a regenerating side that has now squared its season ledger ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Geelong at Optus Stadium.
“We’re really proud of the way the (senior) boys led and our young guys all had an impact and brought energy,” Graham said.
“The players acted very professionally and it was business as usual.”
Graham was pleased to win away from home after West Coast’s well-documented struggles in Melbourne, where they had won just three of 11 matches in the past two seasons.
“It’s great to get an away win. We can’t shy away from that (record) but we’ve got a very different group now,” Graham said.
“It was pleasing to get that win under our belt.”
West Coast backed Simpson’s decision to return home and were tight-lipped on the nature of his daughter’s illness.
It is likely he will be back at the club this week.

BREATHING SPACE
These 50m penalties for encroaching the protected zone are harsh.
Jared Polec is the beneficiary and kicks a long bomb from outside 50 to give the Power a buffer after the Swans were challenging for the lead.
That decision threatens to deflate the Swans after Sam Powell-Pepper followed with another goal to extend the margin to three goals.

BUDDY BRILLIANT
Lance Franklin has kicked a mongrel floater from just inside the 50m arc, but it kept going and going and sails through for a goal.
That’s four for Buddy and the Swans are back to within nine points.
As good as Franklin has been tonight, the Swans do need more avenues to goal.
