Mini-review:

Tbh, I didn't like this as much as I expected. It started out fun and everything, but I think it ran out of steam with each episode. The last few episodes were particularly mediocre, with some of the characters suddenly acting like completely different people. It just made no sense to me. Also, I didn't like how they handled the whole "idol in a relationship" thing. It made me feel like the show was saying idols belong to their fans (and the group) and shouldn't even think of having lives, as if they aren't humans like everybody else. I don't know, it gave me a weird, upsetting feeling. On top of that, while I really liked the characters for the most part, the acting was uneven as hell, and sometimes I didn't even know what the female lead's expressions were supossed to mean. Oh, but one thing I did love is the effort the writer made to include queer characters in a way that felt super-positive. I hope other j-drama writers take notes, in this regard. So, overall, it's not a particularly good drama, and I would only recommend it if you're a big fan of any of the actors.

Open Arms is such a good choice for them Anonie. Even the…I guess upbeat tune? Kind of gives the feelings of both Levan and Lilia. We don’t know much about Levan but I can see him having this calming and yet nonchalant demeanor. Who better to get along with Meleanor and Lilia right? (Someone needs to be the logical one in the group 😆)

The lyrics that really hits is “I know your tired of war and bloodshed, look at how you grip that sword, why take when you can give?”

This is exactly what levan was trying to do, he was trying to reason with the humans; the whole reason for his departure on that diplomatic mission.

He taught the fae the human tongue and he kept Lilia’s NRC letter.

He really wanted Lilia to trust others by lowering his guard (Lilia always thinking about others), he wanted to show that “life is amazing, greet the world with open arms, that kindness is brave”

All actions Lilia was able to experience because of the sacrifices of his friends: he was able to travel, he was able to attend NRC, he saw the kindness of humans first hand, he was able to experience the love of two little ones. All of this, because of his family. 🥹😭💞

It might be a bit surprising given how much I love the Epic series but, I don’t know that many musicals besides this one. Not even some of the popular ones like the wizard of oz one.

The ones I do know is the Epic series, Hamilton, and the Phantom of the Opera…from the top of my head.🤔

From Hamilton, for sure I see “History has its eyes on you” for Lilia to his boys.

Another one is “who lives, who dies, and who tells your story” this song I feel is a great song in a lot of combination. Malleus and Silver to Lilia and their parents. The Knight of Dawn and Princess Leia. Lilia and his childhood friends. Just endless combinations.

For the KOD for this song specifically, I feel Eliza would be perfect for both Leia and Silver. I’ll focus on Leia because I fully believe that the King’s Road is based on KOD and who better to spread all the good he has done except Leia? And of course, their son through his actions.

For the Epic series. Yes. Just, yes.

For the Phantom of the Opera, I need to listen to the songs again. Right now, I correlate the Phantom with Malleus because Kazuki Kato’s role 🤣

But of course, the general premise fits Malleus well. The lonely soul who just wants a companion, for someone to understand and love him as does our dragon fae.

Shoujo Thoughts - Angel Sanctuary

I finally completed Angel Sanctuary by Yuki Kaori. For me, it's been a long time coming, having watched the OVAs well over a year ago and reading a couple volumes last fall, to finally continuing and completing it within the last couple months. In comparison to the last series I covered (Hana Kimi), this one is a lot more fresh in my mind and honestly just denser content wise. Again, I'll be pretty light on spoilers until the character section.

To get things out of the way, yes this series touches sensitive and weird scenarios, I assume most infamous for it's incestuous relationship between Setsuna (the protagonist) and his sister Sara. This is done for several reasons that I won't really go into for sake of spoilers, but in a manga with heaven and hell and religious themes, they are condemned throughout the entire story. I never really rooted for them or considered their relationship "cute" because of the nature of their relationship always looming in the back of my mind, but the story itself consistently marks their love for each other as a huge sin so contextually it made sense. It wasn't fetishizing their relationship, rather it was a building block for the greater narrative and the result of a curse placed on Alexiel (who Setsuna is the reincarnation of). It's still admittedly weird but I was able to compartmentalize it for sake of continuing and seeing what the story built around it offered. On a whole, this story tackles many taboo or tragic relationships.

This is my first time reading something by Yuki Kaori and it certainly made a big impression. Her art is really well done and detailed, with a gothic-leaning style that at times emphasizes horror and gore. The tone of the series is pretty serious but also is well balanced with humor and lightheartedness. As someone who's not religious or overly informed, I'm sure many of the references went over my head and at times the names of the various places would be hard for me to remember. The story had a lot of twists and admittedly was pretty tragic throughout.

I enjoyed the worldbuilding as well; all three of the realms (Earth, Heaven and Hell) had interesting areas visually and the way things operated in each place was pretty well explained or shown through visual cues. The politics were easy enough to follow while still allowing twists in the plot to occur. It was interesting to see that the inhabitants of both heaven and hell were portrayed as somewhere between morally gray to straight up twisted. It made most of the characters have unique and interesting motivations. There's also a ton of different characters (with varying significance) so I'm sure any one could find several characters that they'd enjoy. Some of my favorites throughout were Kira, Kato, Hatter, Katan, Rosiel, Michael, etc. The mangaka also seemed to have no issue with killing a character off which made it anxiety-inducing for me at times when a character I liked seemed to be in danger because I stopped doubting that she would really kill them off.

I would say my favorite arcs were the Hades arc and the Hell arc, I really enjoyed the look of these places as well as the pacing. Kato was one of my favorite characters so it was nice to see the parts that had a larger focus on him as well as the beginning of Setsuna realizing the possible flaws of his recklessness. Hatter was also a pretty twisted character that made for an interesting arc with a lot of great imagery (the parts with Kurai specifically had nice visuals). I found the story overall to be a interesting fantasy epic that covers a lot of ground. In fact, I feel as though this one would be good to reread at some point to help absorb all the content.

Favorite character (contains spoilers) : Kira

Kira was the character that I found most interesting throughout. He was pretty layered due to his tragic past and all the suffering he went through, which made it hard to tell what his actual motivations were or if he truly meant some of the things he'd say (even when it seemed like he didn't). He was an emotional support for Setsuna (presented as a lot more mature than Setsuna), and it seems like he struggled for a while about whether he was actually attached to Setsuna or just there for him because of his affection for Alexiel, who he has always been chasing. Kira however is also a reincarnation of Lucifer, which creates a lot of issues later on (ruthless murder, seeming betrayal, etc.). Overall, he was the character I would get most excited about seeing because it was hard to tell where his character arc would lead him.

//Sidenote// I found the little sidebar comments from the mangaka in this series amusing. She would say things like "Sorry I killed this character but I wasn't really fond of them" or "Yes this character was specifically created to later die so sorry if you got attached", etc. I had to hunt this sidebar down because I remember finding it funny how she described this ("kind of a gay and dark, perverted story"). Were these characters ever used? I have no idea but it made me laugh.

This exercise of conciousness is introduced by Jamie J. Philbert of the Bois Academy in Trinidad & Tobago. In a series of workshops sponsored by Alanna Morris of I.Am.Arts, Jamie shared her ancestral divinity and wisdom in a journey titled "Re-Imagining Station: Frequencies for Healing and Illustrating African Diasporic Consciousness". "Etymological Reduction" (1) is one practice from Philbert Kalinda Technique (PKT) which observes the consciousness of word choice, intentionality, and verbal manifestation.

My fathers name is Nicolas. That means "victory of the people" in Greek.

Mana Caribe is an embodied honoring of my Father and his legacy. Nicolas was a Chicago-Riken Casike, aliʻi of the Latin Kings. He was also known as Kato. His life was taken one year after my birth, but heʻs always lived through me and entrusted me to carry his legacy. In a delightful zoom conversation with Jamie, she reminded me of the significance of our bodies in academia, as "... our ancestors were not allowed to read and write.. and here we are in these institutions... reading and writing about them!" My entire academic career is a tribute to the sacrifice my Father made for me. Through my spiritual growth and journeys, he lives vicariously in all that I do, even if I am unconscious about it. My research drove me to Hawaiʻi, where I am blessed to be welcomed by māhū brethren and the land. Over the years I developed "mana caribe" in my written research, to describe the post-colonial signifiers in Caribbean Performance that resonates with peoples across Te Moana Nui.

To complete this exercise of consciousness, and see my Father staring back at me felt like the most real hug Iʻve ever been able to feel from him. It reminded me it is because of he, that I am me. He has been pushing me all along. Jamie helped me be conscious of this, and begin to heal through this embodied practice.

I have lived this station for the past 5 years as I performed across Chicago theatres while diligently studying Japanese, to attend Carnival in Japan in 2019, to then use this experience to apply for an MFA in Hawaiʻi and continue further ethnographic studies through ancestral awareness. My experiences learning in Hana Keaka, ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, ʻOri Tahiti, and Uchinaa Odori has amalgamated my ancestral and spiritual alignment with my own Taíno epistemology.

With that I offer the prosperity of our collective indigenous knowledge, and the promotion of Afro-Diasporic consciousness and methodologies across oceans.
