#happily ever after filmation

Just some sketchy sketches. Trying to loosen up and get back into a healthy creative habit.

As a kid I really loved the Filmation Snow White. Now, as an adult I can recognize that its got some big issues, BUT, it came out when I was 6, and I had a pirates vhs, so now it lives in my imagination.

During the past year a kind of re-imagined and very, very loose adaptation has been rattling around in my brain. I don’t know entirely what it is yet. Though I envision it taking place in more of like a…1900’s Spanish fantasy world. (This idea coincided with me learning Spanish, so?)

First pic is Blanca (the Snow White proxy) interacting with the Shadow Man. In the cartoon he’s a kind of gremlin-ish aid, here I like to imagine he’s a bit more like a scarecrow. He’s almost like a short scarecrow/scrap man, just sort of builds himself out of whatever he can get his hands on. Like he doesn’t really have “eyes”, he just found broken sunglasses and places those where eyes might go, because no eyes freaks others out.

Design wise I always liked that in the filmation film the Shadow man has that scrap of red covering his mouth (is that just like his tunic that he pulled up over his mouth…or???) its a nice little bit of visual foreshadowing. (Though the twist about him being the cursed prince is obvious)

I really would love to see an adaptation where Snow and the Prince/Shadow man had more time to interact. “I cared for him like the prince” is such a good line, but it would have hit so much better if a friendship actually developed. In my AU, alternate world…thing, i like to imagine that red scarf the shadow man wears is actually something Snow gave him. Like…maybe he gets smashed during an action scene or tries to help one of Snows companions? Idk, really like that idea.

Lol, I realize that there isn’t really much narrative presented in my sketches yet. Thats ok, warming up and playing, more to come. :)

Hi. You know Happily Ever After, right? That Snow White sequel story from Filmation? I was just wondering what you thought of Lord Maliss, if you don't mind

He's a fun villain! Very into being one which is always fun too see, plus genuinely menacing at times which is also very appreciated 👌

(I think he's also very likely based off the Wicked Prince who was the brother of the Disney Evil Queen in the 40s comics. And you know what, props to Filmation for doing their homework for their mockbuster xD)

He actually shows up in my Canon Descendants story for Evie!

I think it's an honest to God shame Filmation ended up shuttering because we could have gotten more crazy ass sequels to public domain fairy tales from them.

I just straight up refer to their Pinocchio sequel as, Pinocchio Goes to Hell, because that's pretty much the theme of that movie. Just look at the Emperor of the Night. He's the devil, man. And the movie goes on about selling your soul to him, and about freedom of choice, and they get pretty on the nose with it at some points. Oh, and that one scene... If I had watched this movie as a kid, I am very sure it would have legitimately scared the shit out of me. And I grew up watching movies before the PG rating was completely defanged.

Then there's their Snow White sequel, Happily Ever After- which I have nostalgia for because I watched it a lot in my childhood.

Snow White is engaged to Prince Adam, the evil queen's brother with no indoor voice shows up and can transform into a wyvern, and it turns out the seven dwarfs have cousins with powers that involve having control over the elements and they work for Mother Nature.

I miss this kind of distilled crazy shit that still takes itself seriously with full conviction.

Happily Ever After! :3

I know it’s been A WHILE, primarily because I’ve had extreme BWOC brainrot, but MOSTLY because I’ve been working on my own original comic which I’m hoping to release by October for the spooky month! And because my job is kind of a lot. BUT!  I actually have some new ideas for my Happily Ever After au stuff, and I wanted to let folks know I actually am going to be trying to work on it more again very soon! I’ve been having such a blast reading the stories and notes and asks, and I heavily encourage y’all to play in the space, make your own aus/worlds/etc., too, just have the best time! I definitely down own any of this stuff and it’s just so so so much fun to have other people to play with on it! ^___^ I initially fizzled out a little on it just because it belongs to Filmation, not me, and I had my own world to build with my comic and had been putting it off mostly due to lack of experience/confidence, but honestly, the wonderful feedback I’ve gotten for HEA stuff has boosted that a lot and I’ve felt more capable to making my own stuff that folks may want to, or even enjoy, reading! So thank you so so much!!! And please go forth and make your own stuff, too, I will love seeing it, and I think if anyone from Filmation could or did, they’d love it too!

through shards of time

(an out of linear order snippet of the past; expansion likely) - This castle was an eyesore. She had permitted it in the way humans will often permit another’s misguided decorative fancy, by looking the other way. Everything had to live somewhere, present company included. But ignoring and neglect were not the same, this next demand was outrageous. She would not stand for it. Her end of the bargain of balance had been kept. His had not. “Maliss, you moron. Get down here and fight me yourself.”

A voice perhaps tonally distinct from the creature that accompanied it, along with an irritable shaking of petals that made up the mantle of the beast of creation, as much a challenge as giving an outlet to her annoyance. Serpentine tail seeming to almost move of it’s own accord, deftly flicking aside a wolf that had been mid pounce, the great skull peered upward as she heard his customary taunting reply. “Oh, but you love animals.” Oh yes, the banter.  Well, that was as always, the same. “I do. That’s why I’m giving them mercy.” Maliss sneered from the top of the tower, dissatisfied with the proceedings. “It’s no use! My sister has declared this land to be her kingdom, and she will not tolerate your influence.” She rolled her tongue along the outside of the skull for a brief moment, seeming to taste the acrid words. “That might be the dumbest thing you’ve said yet. This is an ecosystem, it needs me.” Not you, she thought, the language of silence alone adding those words. Predictably, he scoffed in dismissal. “We have no further need of you!” Now it was her return of a sibilant noise of apathy. “Ha.” She knew this game, the quickest way to end this ridiculousness was to go straight to the source. “You always do what Malefique tells you, such a good little servant.” That had hit a nerve, as she knew it would. “I am not her servant! We are blood equals, holders of the right to necromancy.” She let out a cackle, honest as it was aggravating to him. “You’re a glorified chamberlain, is what you are.” Her attention was already piqued by the answer to impatience. At some point, she would have to create wings for this form of hers, but in the meantime.. Maliss had taken a quick glance behind him, where somewhere in another section of the darkened castle altogether, his sister concocted her own plans in secrecy. Good, she had rattled him. It wasn’t enough to make him falter, but that hadn’t been the idea anyway. It was enough to take some satisfaction in this momentary lapse of confidence. That, and it gave her a gleeful start to climbing up the tower, winding around it in quick reptilian movements, taking further humor in his baffled surprise when he turned to see her swiftly scaling the distance between them. She noted the quick flicker of his gaze, taking stock of the pile of wolves he had sent in some stupid idea of subduing her, all of them sprawled unconscious. Now he would have no choice but to face her himself. He came to the same conclusion, the rending transformation to wyvern meeting her almost at the top of the tower, his scream transforming to a roar of aggravation, mingling with her hoarse serpentine laughter.

Some more sketches for my Happily Ever After Reimagined thing. This time with color pencils! And stickers!

Not too much to comment on here. Still kind of playing with concepts. I do legit like that Snow White has a purple/blue color palette, and the prince is orange/red. That being said, I’m enjoying a white/red/blue-black for her.

The prince is absolutely a ginger still. Just a lot less page-boy haircut.

I know a literal “shadow person” or…scarecrow doesn’t show up in the Filmation Snow White, but I’m still playing around with how I want yo handle the “Shadow Man”. I kind of like the earlier sketches I’ve made of him where he is way smaller and more of a trash person made of scraps.

Hi. Sorry to bother you, but have you ever heard of Happily Ever After? A Snow White sequel story from Filmation? If you have, what are your thoughts on Lord Maliss (the main antagonist of the film)? I mean, if you don't mind

I LOVED! This movie, I remember seeing his as a kid and generally though this was one of Disney’s straight to dvd sequels… tho I should’ve noticed the prince looking very different. The animation despite being not as smooth as others was still so good to watch and Snow white’s design did inspire my ‘age-up’ version of Disney’s Snow white.

As for Lord Maliss; He didn’t really stand out too much for me, his cloak was cool I thought when it could turn people to stone. He was kind of a mix of the evil queen and Maleficent in my opinion but had potential.

I love that multiple studios seem to agree that the Evil Queen has a brother who is just as nasty😂
