Don't Go
When Dora decides to leave for Hogwarts, Andromeda knows she can't hold her back.
Read on AO3
‘Don’t go,’ Andromeda pleads. ‘What more can you do that can’t be done by everyone that’s already there.
But Dora doesn’t stop. She won’t meet her mothers eye as she pulls on one boot, followed by the other.
‘I’m an Auror, Mum. It’s my job.’
‘You’re a mother.’
Dora pauses, her cloak clenched in her hands as she looks to her sleeping son. ‘He’ll be fine. We’ll be back when it’s over.’
Andromeda doesn’t dare ask the question that’s burning in her heart. Doesn’t dare put out into the universe the possibility of any scenario other than her daughter returning in the morning.
Her silence finally draws Dora’s gaze to her. A moment of understanding between two women who loved deeply. ‘You would go,’ Dora says softly.
She would. If their roles were reversed and Ted was at Hogwarts and she had known that Dora would have been safe and loved, no matter the outcome, Andromeda would already be gone.
She wants to beg, to plead. To use the insurmountable loss this war has already left at their door to guilt Dora into staying, but she knows if she does, and something happens to Remus, she will lose her daughter, no matter what.
Instead, she takes Dora’s cloak from her hands, and drapes it around her shoulders, making sure it rests straight, and pulls her into a hug. ‘Keep your head up,’ she says, voice thick with unshed tears.
‘I always do.’
Those are the last words she ever hears her daughter say. Her brilliant, irrepressible daughter, who murmurs something to her son and presses a soft kiss to his forehead, before whirling out the door as if one more second would keep her there forever.
Andromeda sinks to the couch.
The wireless runs all night, bringing what news it can, but no mention of her daughter.
So she waits.
Until Minerva McGonagall appears on her doorstep.
And she knows.
