I lay with the roots in the ground — buried — like my fingers in the ground. Buried are the leaves and seeds of the trees. Trees that will grow into systematical beauties. I’ll climb in the trees and bellow from the branches. I’ll sing with the draft through the cloak of the trees.

Why, I weep with the leaves. Humans can be so hoarse. So rough with the once fertile land yet the waves seem to seep. To become steep. Show us a new course, a course to take to become anew. To bathe in the morning dew and blow a kiss, a kiss to the wood which is sacred. The mountains break and sand block our eyes until we are blind. We seem to be in a bind. Show us a remorse, lead us to a new course.

Let us sing with breezes and love on the trees. Heal what was broken, heal what can be fixed. Or we’ll lay in the ground like the roots. Dirt unbearably coarse.

💚🌏 Happy Earth Day, Mama Nature! 🌍💚

From plentiful poppy plains to succulent sweeping seas, we shore lucked out with our amazing planet. And at the heart of it is the ocean—with its exuberant ecosystems supporting abundant amounts of wildlife, both on land and in the sea!

No matter where you live, the ocean protects and provides for us all—from the air we breathe to regulating the Earth’s climate. Even the simple measures we take in our daily lives to protect the planet make a big difference, not just today, but for generations to come. You can shellebrate Earth Day with us by joining our April EcoChallenge, checking out our Earth Week webpage, or writing to your legislators to let them know about the issues that matter to you. Go outside and enjoy those wildflowers (respectfully), take a deep breath of planktonic air, and say, “Thank you!” to the ocean and our planet today (and everyday)!

Earth Day originated in 1970 when pollution was the biggest environmental concern. Air and waterways are undoubtedly cleaner 50+ years later. It demonstrates that progress can be made when there's a concerted effort.

A current problem which gets overlooked is the amount of environmental damage which the Russian invasion has caused in Ukraine. Environmental activist Greta Thunberg has called Putin's environmental destruction "ecocide".

Just about every aspect of the environment has been worsened by Putin's illegal military action.

After Two Years of War, Ukraine Sees Deepening Environmental Wound

A consortium of agencies called EcoDozor has put together a map graphic showing the environmental consequences of the invasion.

I feel strongly that Russian state assets should be impounded to pay for the damage. Contact your representative at your national parliament and insist that Russian assets be seized to be used to repair environmental damage done in Ukraine by Putin's Russia.

On a historical note, here's a cartoon done by American-Australian underground artist Ron Cobb. It gave rise to the use of the Greek letter Theta 𝚹 to symbolize environmental protection.

In turn, high school students in Springfield, Illinois were inspired to turn that into into a flag for the first Earth Day.

Being mindful of the power of semiotics, it might be useful to revive Theta as a symbol of environmental action. It already exists as an emoji and most of us have devices which can access a Greek font. And at Tumblr we can make stuff green. 𝚹 Θ

Happy Earth Day and happy International Turtle and Tortoise Week! 🌎 We are kicking off the best week of the year with literal tree hugging: Sometimes, you just have to hug a tree! (Or a tree root if you are like me and can't reach the trunk.) 🌳🤗🐢

With all of today's literal and figurative tree hugging, don't forget that we should all be kind to our planet more than just one day every year. Be thoughtful about reducing, reusing, and recycling every day to help our beautiful home stay beautiful! ♻️💚🌏
