seal of the day: harbor seal!!!!! long awaited (at least 4 me) these seals are the most common where i live. they’re extremely common kinda all around the world, but esp coastally in the northern hemisphere. worldwide there are at most an estimated 500,000 harbor seals :0 these seals are so common and widespread that there are 5 subspecies of harbor seals. they have many different and unique patterns and colors, no seal is the exact same! also fun fact: the header picture in my profile is one i took of a harbor seal at my local aquarium! what do you think of harbor seals?
After giving birth, harbor seal moms stay with their blubbery brood to nurse them, and teach them how to swim and hunt. These seal mom and pup pairs will also snooze and snuggle in the sand. Congratulations, mama seal—you’re shore doing a swell job!
hybrid harbor seal reader with a pup seal and she and her pop got rescued due to you and your pup being really injured from a rough net injury. leaving you smacking your side very aggressively because your pissed off at your pup getting taken away from you. your pup just crying out for their momma as they take you to separate rooms to examine.
you having to be separated from your pup for the maximum of three days and you flipping on people swearing and growling at them, trying to nip at their hand because of the really bad injury on your tail, which was lucky to be saved.
your pup who's in the room with another hybrid harbor seal who's named johnny because johnny has raised a pup before. he think the momma abandoned the pup because of how your pup crawls to him so desperately. needing someone to comfort them.
your pup starts purring against him, after all hes like a furnace to them. but you on the other hand werent eating and its only been two days. they let you off early and brought you to johnnys enclosure where your pup was staying.
you started crying out for your pup and you heard the small cries back as you got closer. johnny stayed in the water, mouth underwater as his eyes were peering just over the water to look at you and your pup nuzzling together. he just knew you had to be his permanent mate.
he started hunting for you (if you could even call it hunting.) and trying to bite at your neck.
at first you were confused, you thought he was trying to harm you! but when he brought you all those delicious fish, you couldnt deny. he was charming aswell.
you let him nibble on your neck, and start chasing your flippers to bite on them while you start bumping your head against his and aswell as flipper waving to him.
your pup started exploring the water when soap could do mating behaviour and luckily, you accepted his gifts, the biting, the nibbles. you were officially his mate and your pup was also his pup.
you three; johnny, your pup and you were set off into the ocean back again to get back to your kelp home. all joyful with a new mate on your side.
(seal hybrids are mermaids but with flippers ont heir side that they can control.)

slowly coming back to posting art again....been watching a lot of seal videos as usual and all the baby ones got me thinking about the pups
there's one in particular where the pup is swimming and keeps barking while its mouth is full of water so it sounds like its drowning 😂 i don't think jon would enjoy hearing the twins make those noises while he's stuck on shore
[Start ID: Four black and white traditional drawings from a TMA selkie AU. First drawing is of one of Jon and Martin's babies - they have dark curly hair, big eyes, and a beauty mark by their right cheek. They're laying on their tummy swaddled in a seal pelt. Above them text reads "I'm a baby seal! I did one situp so I think I'll take a nap <3". Next is a three panel comic. Martin is an adult harbor seal and appears to be swimming underwater, looking behind him. He thinks, "The twins are swimming so well already - I can't believe it!". Next panel Martin pops his head up from the water to look on shore. He thinks, "I wonder how Jon is feeling...he's probably so happy-". A tiny version of Jon with browline glasses smiles with a small tear, saying "My sweet babies!". Final panel, Martin holds both flippers up to a shocked face, shouting "He looks terrified?!". Jon looks forward with a harrowed stare, a frozen frown on his face. The thought bubble next to him has another simplifed version of him, showing his true internal reaction: tears spew from browline glasses and a jagged mouth is screaming "They're drowning!!!". Jon has dark, curly hair slicked back and has a full beard. He wears a simple collared shirt. End ID.]
I went to the aquarium today! I don’t come out often. I liked it. Being out and the aquarium. I saw seals and sharks and beluga whales and a whale shark and otters and alligators and gar and a mantis shrimp and more! And when we left, Renna Fen said I could pick any plushie I wanted! I got a cute harbor seal pup plush. She’s so soft and I love her so much. She needs a name.
Happy Mother’s Day from your National Marine Sanctuary System! This harbor seal mom is checking in on her pup in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
If you see a harbor seal pup alone on a beach, it’s not abandoned – its mother is just out feeding so she can continue to sustain her pup. Stay back 100 yards if possible, and keep any dogs on a leash. If you approach the pup, you may spook its mother and she may not come back – keeping your distance helps keep mother and pup safe!
March through May is harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) pupping season and we’re lucky enough to have a seal rookery—a nursery for moms and pups—right in our backyard at Hopkins Beach.
Pups stay with their mothers for the first 4-6 weeks of their life. During this crucial bonding time, the pups learn to swim and forage before being weaned and venturing out on their own.
⚠ PSA ⚠ (Public Seal Announcement)
🏝️Give them space and share the shore. Please keep your distance and always remember to stay at least 100 yards away.
❌🤳To minimize stress on our blubbery buddies during an already stressful time (new parents out there, you know what’s up), remember to keep the area quiet, and (sorry!) no sealfies with seals.
💙Come on down to the bay and explore the wonder that is harbor seal pupping season.
