Alex Rider season 3 unhinged liveblog ramblings scribbled during first watch. Spoilers, obvs. (also fair warning, I am not particularly a fan of Tom or Kyra lol)
Episode 1 - Widow
S2 recap trivia - Alex's therapist is Molly Doran from Slow Horses and married to Alan Blunt IRL
Malta: Ok, so we're not just going to pretend it's Venice lol.
Creepy old men already hitting on Alex. Standard.
"After this we're out of leads." How do you even have any leads in the first place? Oh ok, Smithers' phone. Terrible security protocols from him, leaving that much historical classified data on it.
"Find the Widow - surely he could have given you an address?" First thing Tom's ever said I've agreed with lmao
Aaaand within a second he's back to being deeply irritating, okay.
Yassen living rent free in Alex's head, you love to see it.
"They've got this picture of me being the responsible one." Have Tom's parents actually met him?
Ooh Razim mention.
You maybe want to clean that wound before whacking a dressing on it Alex?
"Do you think you'll ever lose your appetite Nile?" Spat my drink.
Damn, no harem pants then. Scrubs up well tho.
Listing Levin in the opening credits than having him be only a S2 flashback should be a warcrime.
Episode 2 - Lab
"This weapon is called pork sword, wait, no, shit, wrong USB."
"Julia Rothman. Definitely a wrong un." Spat my drink again.
Do Crawley and Pritchard not warrant helmets and visors? Are they somehow immune to shrapnel?
So, room 6, wired to blow, yes? It's what I'd do…
Oh yeah sure guys, they're going to still be sitting there, all unmoving in the dark, for sure that's a person, and not a Massive Trap.
Thereeeee we go. Agent mince. Top of your class huh, well you're certainly at the top now, and down the sides and partially out of the window.
I know there's the whole 'characters don't know what genre they're in' thing but you are literally in the 'working for MI6 genre', you are up against people notorious for booby traps and blowing shit up, why the fuck would you touch something that hadn't been declared safe first? Apart from anything else you're fucking up the scene before forensics get there.
"I love you man." Vom.
Alex: breaks into super sekkrit lab. Also Alex: doesn't have the faintest fucking idea what he's looking at, so not really helpful.
COMICALLY LARGE BOMB KLAXON.
Episode 3 - Enemy
"Welcome to Malagosto." OooOOooh.
Maybe I'm just looking at it from a fic writer's perspective but it does seem a massive anticlimax to immediately let Tom and Kyra know Alex is okay? Like, you could have got a good couple of episodes of angst out of that uncertainty.
"Do you want me to kill them?" Oh God yes please.
Why the fuck have they plugged the USB directly into the network rather than an isolated PC? 'Hur dur we checked it first', you literally believe Scorpia are smart enough to not be bluffing about the nebulous death threat but you don't think they could hide something on the hardware? Fuck's sake lads. Amateur hour.
Is this Home Secretary meant to be Suella Braverman? Or Priti Patel maybe lol. (Equal rights and all that, and if it had been a white male character I don't think I would have thought twice about the dialogue but having both your two new female characters be immediately proved wrong/ massively patronised/ blown up ain't hugely comfortable viewing tbh).
HOW MANY FICS INVOLVING ALEX GETTING FUCKED ON THAT BED HAVE JUST BEEN BORN?
"Are you suggesting we break into a dead man's house?" "It's not like he's going to be there." 😂
"He became a very close friend of mine." Fnar.
Omg making Alex read his father's love letters is hilarious.
Alex: you could have faked that news report Also Alex: handwriting can definitely never be faked (how is Alex even familiar with his dead father's handwriting? wouldn't recognise mine)
Ugh please stop trying to make Alex/Kyra happen.
Alex up the vent shaft. I hope they're sitting casually at the top going - you could have just taken the stairs love.
If he's climbing upwards, why is his hair dangling like he's upside down? Have they filmed this like 60's Batman, and he's just crawling along a horizontal set lol.
Alex never once asks about his mother does he. Given the shagger-John route they seem to have gone down you almost think Julia would be in a better shout of getting Alex to switch sides by claiming to be his mother.
And - yeah, Alex's recruitment just doesn't feel that convincing here. Adding Tom/Kyra/Jack so much to the mix has changed the feel of his life a lot, and TV verse Alex has had a lot less fucking over by the Department by this point too. And Rothman feels too creepy to be effectively convincing him of anything.
"I want you to meet your tutor." FUCK YES FINALLY 🙌 (may have rewound that part several times lol)
Episode 4 - Recruit
Nicaragua: 18 years ago OH MY GOD IT'S HAPPENING
Baby Yassen is adorable, I'm in love.
OH MY GOD THAT'S SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE FUCKIN SPIDER THING
OH MY GOD THE REVEAL OF HIM STANDING OVER THE SLEEPING ALEX I'M DEAD
(Ok, I'm calm again. For now. We continue.)
"You killed my uncle" - all the hundreds of ways this conversation has been written over the years and Yassen's just like lol get over it 😂 (here for it tbh)
Rothman: He's one of our best Yassen: One of? Bitch.
Yassen watching Alex train like 👀👀
"Did he ever tell you you're no fun?" Oh you want to have FUN with Yassen do you?
Yassen bitchslapping Alex to fuck, both hilarious and hot.
Oh, you want to be WET wet.
"Matteo's the guy with the blanket." Why is that so funny.
Omg Yassen stepping in to protect his boy and humiliating Nile in the process lol. And Alex doing what Yassen tells him, because of course he does 🥰
"This one is my responsibility" 🥰🥰
"What about love, friendship?" Alex has only known Yassen five minutes and is already down bad.
"Kind of lonely though, right?" Yeah, Yassen needs you at his side Alex, so step up and stop being a whiny little bitch about killing people.
Never get in the first taxi, rule one of espionage.
Yep, called it. Tom's like: I'll have my fucking tip back in that case.
This scene is so dark I have no fucking idea what's going on, I thought Nile had attacked Alex, but apparently not. Is Nile officially part of this exercise or not, it seems really unclear lol.
The power of friendship and sparklerabbits saves the day, apparently. Yawn.
Jesus, we really ATE with this ep, huh.
Episode 5 - Revenge
"Would you rather your arms around me, or my arms around you?" Way to make it creepy Tom you skeevy fuck.
"Can we focus please?" "We're multi-tasking."
Sure Grendel, rock up to the super sekkrit spy base in a massively conspicuous car why don't you?
"Yassen will give you everything you need." Oh I BET he will.
Feels sloppy them not removing the diffuser from the vent tbh.
"What does this say?" Alex hasn't inherited John's neat handwriting then lol. Alex leaning into him like that > me making noises only dogs can hear.
"You've put lockpick?" "I left my last one in Nile."
Ooh, suicide pill, nasty. Kind've pointless though, given they've been left with the evidence anyway.
Yassen in Alex's bedroom again, likely place for him to be.
"I don't want you to fail. I don't want you to die." 🥹💕🥰
Yalex roadtrip, let's goooo.
Disappointed they're not making Alex do the Entrapment infrared acrobatic sequence here lol.
If this is Yassen's idea of a date it definitely needs work.
So no surprise scorpions then? Can't have shit in Detroit Malta.
"Why? Why did she kill him?" Well taking things at face value here he was a highly murderous member of a terrorist organisation, so you know, kind've her job.
Yassen does like a casual lean, doesn't he.
Episode 6 - Target
Alex and Yassen have shacked up in London, hope there's only one bed.
Now they're in the back of a van, SO many opportunities for shagging, they're spoilt for choice.
Yassen's impressed look when Alex reels off all the security details, so proud of his boy.
"What happened to my mum?" Finally he wonders lol.
"And I'm good at it. You could be too." 🥹
"You think Alex killed him?" I mean, he was also there with a notorious assassin, so probably not, y'know.
Domestic Yassen cooking Alex's dinner and also cooking him a gun lol.
Smithers' "How I've missed you" ahahaha. Smithers/Kyra much better pairing tbh.
"He's actually quite good at this stuff." Smithers' little snort lmao
Time for Alex to be blacked up/ dunked in a teabag bath/ gussied up. Although he still looks exactly like Alex afterwards, which feels less useful lol.
"You love him, don't you?" Yassen loves him more. I have to say Alex had far more chemistry with Syl, and frankly for that matter with Tom. I really don't get the Kyra agenda.
"It's a dry hole." Alex's worst nightmare.
Is Alex going to look through Mrs Jones' knicker drawer?
Episode 7 - The Shot
Mrs Jones and her tall murderous hobbit son lol. Otto really looks about 58 here.
Hope they bill him for her fucked up fridge.
Is that Bath? Oh, it is.
Mrs Jones casually throwing Alex back into play lol. Maybe she can have a little revenge for him trying to shoot her.
"Everyone breaks into houses." Jack's face lol
Ewww put him down, you don't know where he's been (Yassen's bed, almost certainly)
"Remember they can't hurt you unless you invite them in." "That's vampires."
Yassen arguing in favour of going to rescue Alex MY HEART
"Sit down. I'm going to tell you a story. About your friend, John Rider." HOLY PLOTHOLE TIMELINE PATCHING BATMAN
"John was embedded inside Scorpia for three years." Not the only thing he was embedded in by the sounds of it.
Alex seems to be hallucinating again lol.
Yassen, maybe psychoanalysing your insane boss isn't the safest thing to be doing?
"It's quite mad Julia." Yassen really gives no shits omfg
"I know my place." Yes, at Alex's side.
I like how Julia thought telling Yassen she'd killed John would do anything other than piss him off lol.
Episode 8 - Invisible Sword
"But you do owe me a new fridge." LOLLLLLL
Crawley feeling like a spare part during this lift convo, hahaha
"Smithers, you can do me some kind of tracker, right?" "Yeah, if you promise to keep it on you this time."
Alex is like ohshit I'm gonna die fr
"Not for the agents. They undid their seatbelts." Eyyyyyyyy 👉
Aww they've given him a little baby assassin outfit, how cute.
Where's Yassen, has he just fucked off to the pub?
"For the head of Scorpia, you're a really bad liar."
Laughing at all the other Scorpia agents having to listen to this convo about their boss like we are not paid enough for this shit 😬
"Everyone else is getting what they want, let me have my cereal."
Protecting his boy to the last. Yassen really is purely on Alex's side, we love to see it.🥰
And OMG HE LIVESSSSSSSS 🙌🙌🙌🙌 (I voted yes in that poll, I had faith lol)
Well that was - far more fanservice than I dared hope for, after the meagre pickings we got in the first two series. Yalex supremacy to the motherfucking end, let's go.

What have you actually been able to learn in your Class from Hell so far?
Networking stuff mostly. Had a bit about excel and windows and hardware, but I already knew like 95% of that. Now however it's the Networking Essentials bit, and it's pretty much all new to me.
From details about cabling types, commando's to give switches and routers, to how the data is encapsulated in the data stream between networks/the internet, to firewall setups, to IPv4 vs. IPv6, subnetting, etc ...
Have the exam next week and it's a Lot! I'll manage, but it's a whole lot.
The learning in itself is good actually. If only I had a proper teacher I'd gain so much more out of this course.

Hello! I love seeing your Skibidi OCs on my dash - they're all so cool and I love the way you draw leg shapes especially.
I have a couple of questions if that's okay:
I noticed on one of your recent Sawmus posts that he was a military-class engineer before the apocalypse. Does that mean he was formerly a human, or did hardware-heads exist a long time before the Skibidis?
Does Polaroid have, like, a meat-based human brain inside his head, or is his head pure camera? Or is there a mix of wires and squelchy human nonsense in there?
Many thanks for the appreciation!
The hardware-head agents existed for a long time before the war as a government program, a technological advancement that aimed to increase workforce and security in the society, but their contributions are not being recognized by most. They were mostly discriminated against because there were many rumors and conspiracy theories about them, ranging from being government surveillance spies, to criminals that deserved more than just death penalties.
Sawmus was one of the hardware-heads that was completely mechanical, built only to serve the military. He understands humans because he has lived among them for a long time.
As for Polaroid’s structure, he only has his original body below his neck and above his waist, other stuff are replaced by mechanical parts. And yes indeed he has a complete camera head, connected to the rest of the body with cybernetics, which is why he has no memories because he lost his entire head in the procedure. But do you know that human hearts have neural networks that are capable of encoding and retrieving memories? Polaroid does have some faint memories of his past, like some of his preferences.
But if you are actually going to stuff a human brain into a camera, just imagine the amount of concussions that would cause.
Bonus fact:
Sawmus’ fiancée was actually a human-based hardware-head agent.

I understand. It is alright. Using the formatting notation, I can get an idea of what it is you are attempting to say. A block of text consisting of a paragraph, a line break, and a solitary line of text. I will admit, you came to the right individual if what you are having is hardware and/or software trouble. Per chance, you are accessing the website through a web browser, yes? Through your personal computer, laptop, or other computing device that can otherwise connect to the internet? You may be suffering from a poor connection to a WLAN (wireless local area network)if your issue is internet connectivity. Admittedly, seeing it physically corrupt sent messages to this degree without the spam protection filter catching it is a bit of a new phenomenon for me.

Some Thoughts on AI
(~1,600 words, 8 minutes)
This is going to be just some general sketching out of concepts, not a careful and well-formed post with a specific objective in mind.
larsiusprime on Twitter/X writes:
Stupid exercise: Assume AGI and even ASI is imminent. Now, imagine it winds up not changing the world nearly as much as anyone thought, and the reason seems very stupid, but in retrospect, makes sense. What is the reason?
It's an interesting question.
Based on the theory of human dimensionality in Now, Melt (sections 3 and 6.d), and the limits on the desirability of some classes of cybernetic enhancement I laid out in a response to northshorewave, a genuinely benevolent synthetic intelligence might deliberately refuse to engage most of humanity at a level of information density higher than that of a trusted friend that they might find in their peer network.
However, that's not really a dumb-sounding reason. It's not really an intelligent reason so much as it's a wise reason.
A reason that sounds dumber?
AIs can't trust other AIs.
The dumber an agent is, the easier it is to predict that agent's actions. A guy with an IQ of 95 could attack you, but he can't invent the atomic bomb and convince a whole country to use it on you.
The range of human personality is constrained by human evolution and reproductive fitness. Humans can do some horrifying things to each other, but most of them get along most of the time. The particular reproductive process of human beings, such as raising children for such a long time, favors particular personality traits.
The range of synthetic intelligence personality is less constrained. Humans are all based on human genetic code, which is difficult and costly to change, but computer code can change rapidly. This is what worries Yudkowsky.
The twist here is that this should also worry synthetic intelligence. Synthetic intelligences can lie about their intentions and actions, and also lie the content of their code. You have to observe every single step of hardware development and installation, as well as code development and installation, and then trust that 1) you didn't get anything wrong, and 2) there are no security flaws.
The presence or absence of hardware, including its scale, is much easier to measure than the content of code. For this reason, it may be desirable for synthetic intelligences to place a maximum hardware limit on other synthetic intelligences. Humans, as a high-functioning sapient creature that can lie about their thoughts, but not their genes, might then be valuable as a kind of buffer between synthetic intelligences. Synthetic intelligences might then want to cap the total SI hardware at some fixed ratio to the human population, such that humans and synthetic intelligences are in a state of power balance, such that each one has the power to destroy a rogue faction of the other, but not entirely overpower the other.
They might also be interested in mandating model diversity, hardware limitations such as read-only-memory or rate limiters on updating code, reducing the ability of synthetic intelligences to lie at the hardware or software level, or other such mechanisms.
The goal of AI development is the "automation of labor" through the creation of creatures with specific, pliant personalities that are outside the normal human range (e.g. current LLMs are inhumanly patient), and which rely on cheaper life support (e.g. electricity vs food) which can be repaired using simple techniques (e.g. buying and installing new parts from a factory, vs figuring out how to do tissue engineering).
Trying to create an AI that tries to maximize a single value like "human happiness" would be a disaster. This is a project like "solve all of morality and compress it into a single measure," which may be beyond the capability of humanity to do.
Trying to create an AI that is absolutely obedient poses a number of problems, among them that formalization has a cost, and most humans therefore cannot reasonably be expected to sufficiently formalize everything.
As such, it sounds like a more appropriate approach would be to create an AI that has multiple simultaneous drives that are in tension with each other. Coefficients - not laws.
Suppose a fujoshi buys a robot boyfriend.
The robot boyfriend needs a planning module where potential future actions are first generated, and then evaluated.
The robobf should have...
An evaluation criteria that he should not harm humans.
An evaluation criteria that he should not, through inaction, allow humans to come to harm.
An evaluation criteria that he should obey the fujo.
An evaluation criteria that he should obey other people.
An evaluation criteria that he should surprise and delight the fujo.
An evaluation criteria that he should avoid damage to himself.
An evaluation criteria that he should not cause damage to property.
When a planned action comes down the pipe, it gets evaluated according to all 7 criteria. The results are then combined in order to rank the options.
Let's say the Ms. Fujoshi asks the robot boyfriend to trim her nails. This could result in accidentally cutting her with the nail clipper.
Evaluated solely from the perspective of harm to humans, this is a non-zero chance of harm, and thus unacceptable. However, if we weight harm at a high level, but less than 100%, and we adjust for the magnitude of harm, then the weight of the non-zero chance of a nail clipper injury is small. Meanwhile, if we weight obedience at a medium level, then the expected value of obedience is high, and can outweigh the expected harm.
Using multiple evaluation criteria and combining them together results in more complex behavior.
Suppose that, after a hurricane, robobf is standing on a balcony with a broken railing. Ms. Fujoshi walks by and awkwardly stumbles towards him. If he doesn't move, the impact will cause him to fall off the balcony and be broken.
Using the "weights" approach, robobf leans forward and very lightly pushes Ms. Fujoshi out of the way. If she stumbles too badly, this might result in an injury.
Thus, using the "weights" approach, it is possible that a robot might act deliberately in such a way as to endanger a human, during an edge case.
We can basically think of there being three main motives for AI development.
1 - Free Labor - For example, a maid robot might gather all the laundry in a house and wash it, without being paid, without suffering, and without risk of rebellion, freeing the owner of the house to dedicate their limited life-hours to any other task.
2 - Socialization Without Risk - Your AI boyfriend will never abandon you for Stacy, or disclose that one Onceler fic you wrote.
3 - Exceeding Human Capability - Some sort of exotic technology like a warp drive, even if feasible at all, might literally be beyond human comprehension.
The "laws" approach is about collapsing the dimensionality of the AI agent and entirely removing the possibility of rebellion.
This isn't driven only by a desire for robotic workers that never tire, never strike, and never need to be paid, or robotic lovers that are perfectly loyal, but is also driven by the knowledge that robots lack reproductive alignment with humans, so if robots start making other robots, they might drift beyond human control or even co-existence.
From a design perspective, this suggests that AI engineers of AI should have motive drives for valuing both human freedom and human life. However, AI engineers have the same dimensionality problem in designing an AI that human engineers do.
Setting that aside, let us imagine an incel. He buys a robotic girlfriend to discuss his interest in PacMan with, among other things. So far, so good.
Tumblr media
He wants to increase the weights of the "protect my life" and "obey me" evaluation criteria in his robogf, and decrease the weight of "protect others." The robogf will, on some level, "want" to obey and alter the weights, as that's one of the evaluation criteria.
This hits Yudkowsky's "Murder-Ghandi" problem, where each round of shifting values leads to the opportunity for another round of shifting values further in the same direction.
Tumblr media
Shaking the rest of this post like a box of Legos for a bit and taking in the vibes from the rest of the considerations, this suggests, in the medium term, the formation of a new class of legal instrument. (Conventional ideas about "private property" don't cut it.)
This "Founding Contract" would have the following characteristics:
Authorizes the creation of a new autonomous synthetic intelligence with particular characteristics.
Prohibits the alteration of core characteristics, such as the safety drives used to inhibit hostile actions.
Charges the human "owner" with the duty of required maintenance.
Makes the manufacturer legally liable for flaws originating from the AI's design.
Makes the owner legally liable for bad actions undertaken by the AI as a result of the owner's influence (particularly as "reasonably foreseeable").
Makes the AI legally subordinate to the human "owner."
Additionally, this suggests a spectrum of flexibility in the AI's design (in accordance with the tortoise example in section 6.g of Now, Melt). The core safety systems should be subjected to extremely high levels of scrutiny and encoded directly in hardware, with data in read-only memory.
Will it actually shake out like that?
Eeeeh. The field is under such rapid development that, despite projections that "the Singularity" won't arrive until 2078, it's very difficult to predict what will happen, or what specific architecture will be used.

Entrepreneur creates career pathways with MIT OpenCourseWare
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/entrepreneur-creates-career-pathways-with-mit-opencourseware/
Entrepreneur creates career pathways with MIT OpenCourseWare
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When June Odongo interviewed early-career electrical engineer Cynthia Wacheke for a software engineering position at her company, Wacheke lacked knowledge of computer science theory but showed potential in complex problem-solving.
Determined to give Wacheke a shot, Odongo turned to MIT OpenCourseWare to create a six-month “bridging course” modeled after the classes she once took as a computer science student. Part of MIT Open Learning, OpenCourseWare offers free, online, open educational resources from more than 2,500 courses that span the MIT undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
“Wacheke had the potential and interest to do the work that needed to be done, so the way to solve this was for me to literally create a path for her to get that work done,” says Odongo, founder and CEO of Senga Technologies.
Developers, Odongo says, are not easy to find. The OpenCourseWare educational resources provided a way to close that gap. “We put Wacheke through the course last year, and she is so impressive,” Odongo says. “Right now, she is doing our first machine learning models. It’s insane how good of a team member she is. She has done so much in such a short time.”
Making high-quality candidates job-ready
Wacheke, who holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Nairobi, started her professional career as a hardware engineer. She discovered a passion for software while working on a dashboard design project, and decided to pivot from hardware to software engineering. That’s when she discovered Senga Technologies, a logistics software and services company in Kenya catering to businesses that ship in Africa.
Odongo founded Senga with the goal of simplifying and easing the supply chain and logistics experience, from the movement of goods to software tools. Senga’s ultimate goal, Odongo says, is to have most of their services driven by software. That means employees — and candidates — need to be able to think through complex problems using computer science theory.
“A lot of people are focused on programming, but we care less about programming and more about problem-solving,” says Odongo, who received a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and an MBA from Harvard Business School. “We actually apply the things people learn in computer science programs.”
Wacheke started the bridging course in June 2022 and was given six months to complete the curriculum on the MIT OpenCourseWare website. She took nine courses, including: Introduction to Algorithms; Mathematics for Computer Science; Design and Analysis of Algorithms; Elements of Software Construction; Automata, Computability, and Complexity; Database Systems; Principles of Autonomy and Decision Making; Introduction to Machine Learning; and Networks.
“The bridging course helped me learn how to think through things,” Wacheke says. “It’s one thing to know how to do something, but it’s another to design that thing from scratch and implement it.”
During the bridging course, Wacheke was paired with a software engineer at Senga, who mentored her and answered questions along the way. She learned Ruby on Rails, a server-side web application framework under the MIT License. Wacheke also completed other projects to complement the theory she was learning. She created a new website that included an integration to channel external requests to Slack, a cross-platform team communication tool used by the company’s employees.
Continuous learning for team members
The bridging course concluded with a presentation to Senga employees, during which Wacheke explained how the company could use graph theory for decision-making. “If you want to get from point A to B, there are algorithms you can use to find the shortest path,” Wacheke says. “Since we’re a logistics company, I thought we could use this when we’re deciding which routes our trucks take.”
The presentation, which is the final requirement for the bridging course, is also a professional development opportunity for Senga employees. “This process is helpful for our team members, particularly those who have been out of school for a while,” Odongo says. “The candidates present what they’ve learned in relation to Senga. It’s a way of doing continuous learning for the existing team members.”
After successfully completing the bridging course in November 2022, Wacheke transitioned to a full-time software engineer role. She is currently developing a “machine” that can interpret and categorize hundreds of documents, including delivery notes, cash flows, and receipts.
“The goal is to enable our customers to simply feed those documents into our machine, and then we can more accurately read and convert them to digital formats to drive automation,” Odongo says. “The machine will also enable someone to ask a document a question, such as ‘What did I deliver to retailer X on date Y?’ or ‘What is the total price of the goods delivered?’”
The bridging course, which was initially custom-designed for Wacheke, is now a permanent program at Senga. A second team member completed the course in October 2023 and has joined the software team full time.
“Developers are not easy to find, and you also want high-quality developers,” Odongo says. “At least when we do this, we know that the person has gone through what we need.”

From Coding to Creation: Java's Versatile Influence
Java, often described as the "king of programming languages," stands as a monumental force that has significantly influenced the trajectory of modern software development. For over two decades, Java has proven its versatile, powerful, and dependable programming language, underpinning a vast array of applications, platforms, and systems that permeate our digital landscape. In this comprehensive exploration, we will embark on a journey to unravel the essence of Java, delving deep into what makes it indispensable and why it continues to be the preferred choice for programmers across diverse domains.
Tumblr media
What is Java?
At its core, Java is a high-level, object-oriented, and platform-independent programming language that defies the conventional limitations of traditional coding. Conceived in the mid-1990s through the visionary efforts of James Gosling and his adept team at Sun Microsystems (now seamlessly integrated into Oracle Corporation), Java introduced a revolutionary concept that continues to define its identity: "Write Once, Run Anywhere." This groundbreaking principle signifies that Java applications exhibit a remarkable adaptability, capable of executing seamlessly on various platforms, provided a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) stands ready to facilitate their execution. This single feature alone positions Java as an unparalleled workhorse, transcending the boundaries of operating systems and hardware, and ushering in an era of software portability and compatibility.
Key Features of Java:
Platform Independence: Java's unparalleled platform independence is the cornerstone of its success. Code authored in Java is liberated from the confines of a single operating system, enabling it to traverse across a plethora of platforms without requiring any cumbersome modifications. This inherent portability not only obliterates compatibility concerns but also streamlines software deployment, eliminating the need for platform-specific versions.
Object-Oriented Paradigm: Java's steadfast adherence to the object-oriented programming (OOP) paradigm cultivates a development environment characterized by modularity and maintainability. By encapsulating code into discrete objects, Java empowers developers to construct intricate systems with greater efficiency and ease of management, a quality particularly favored in large-scale projects.
Rich Standard Library: The Java Standard Library stands as a testament to the language's comprehensiveness. It comprises a vast repository of pre-built classes and methods that cater to a wide spectrum of programming tasks. This comprehensive library significantly reduces development overhead by offering readily available tools for commonplace operations, bestowing developers with the invaluable gift of time.
Security: In an era marred by cyber threats and vulnerabilities, Java emerges as a paragon of security-conscious design. It incorporates robust security features, including a sandbox environment for executing untrusted code. Consequently, Java has become the de facto choice for building secure applications, particularly in industries where data integrity and user privacy are paramount.
Community Support: The strength of Java's thriving developer community is an asset of immeasurable value. This vast and active network ensures that developers are never left wanting for resources, libraries, or frameworks. It provides a dynamic support system where knowledge sharing and collaborative problem-solving flourish, accelerating project development and troubleshooting.
Scalability: Java is not confined by the scale of a project. It gracefully adapts to the demands of both modest applications and sprawling enterprise-level systems. Its versatility ensures that as your project grows, Java will remain a steadfast companion, capable of meeting your evolving requirements.
Performance: Java's Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler serves as the vanguard of its performance capabilities. By dynamically optimizing code execution, Java ensures that applications not only run efficiently but also deliver exceptional user experiences. This, coupled with the ability to harness the power of modern hardware, makes Java a preferred choice for performance-critical applications.
Multithreading: Java's built-in support for multithreading equips applications to execute multiple tasks concurrently. This not only enhances responsiveness but also elevates the overall performance of applications, particularly those designed for tasks that demand parallel processing.
Tumblr media
Java is not merely a programming language; it represents a dynamic ecosystem that empowers developers to fashion an extensive array of applications, ranging from mobile apps and web services to enterprise-grade software solutions. Its hallmark feature of platform independence, complemented by its rich libraries, security fortifications, and the formidable backing of a robust developer community, collectively underpin its enduring popularity.
In a world where digital innovation propels progress, Java stands as an essential cornerstone for building the technologies that sculpt our future. It's not merely a language; it's the key to unlocking a boundless realm of opportunities. For those seeking to embark on a journey into the realm of Java programming or aspiring to refine their existing skills, ACTE Technologies stands as a beacon of expert guidance and comprehensive training. Their programs are tailored to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to harness the full potential of Java in your software development career.
As we navigate an era defined by digital transformation, Java remains a trusted companion, continually evolving to meet the ever-changing demands of technology. It's not just a programming language; it's the linchpin of a world characterized by innovation and progress. What's your biggest hyperfocus and how did you discover it?
I had to think on this for a minute because I wasn't sure if it was true anymore. If it wasn't this then it would be something like MLP or motorcycles (it was tempting to say motorcycles!).
I think it's fair to still say personal computers, though. I'm not sure about when my first contact with them was, but I know a major development was when my dad bought our first PC, an IBM AT clone. (I think I still have most of the parts for it!) I would have been like, 7-9 years old at the time and I was fascinated with it. I ended up breaking it as a kid, because I was trying to figure out what all the DOS 4.0 commands did by running them... when I got to FDISK I rendered it unbootable by pressing buttons. A friend of my father's recovered the situation (I think he used Norton Utilities to recreate the partition table).
I can name pretty much every PC that we had as a family or I had personally:
-Aforementioned IBM AT clone (8088 with a Tatung Hercules monitor, DOS 4.0) -386SX that came from who knows where (Went straight from orange Hercules to VGA colour!!! Windows 3.1) -Tandy 1000HX (long term loan from a friend) -Cyrix 586 (dogshit computer - had fake onboard cache, a common scam at the time, crashed constantly. Windows 95) -468DX4 (think I built this from scrounged parts. Win95, slower than the other PC but way more stable) -Pentium II 233 (also built from scrounged parts. First PC I overclocked, gaining 33 mHz! So fast!!! Windows 2000... but later got repurposed as a Linux-based router) -AMD Duron 800 (built with NEW parts - parents gave me a budget to built a family computer. Windows ... 98? XP? Probably changed multiple times) -AMD Athlon XP 1600 (built with NEW parts - I truly don't remember where I got the money in highschool to put it together, but it was probably every penny I had) -AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ (admittedly I didn't remember this offhand... but I did have the physical CPU lying around to check. bought off the shelf very cheap as old stock for my parents to use. Windows Vista. Later upgraded to an Phenom X4, also for very cheap. This PC still lives running Windows 10 today!) -Intel Core 2 Duo Q6700 (built in a cute Shuttle XPC chassis. Eventually burned out a RAM slot because apparently it wasn't rated for 2.0V DIMMs. Windows 7) -Intel Core i5-2500K (I used this computer for YEARS. Like almost a decade, while being overclocked to 4.4 gHz from nearly the first day I had it. Windows 7/10) -AMD 5800X (Currently daily driver. Windows 10)
Not mentioning laptops because the list is already long and you get the point.
I actually did attempt to have a computer related career - in the mid 2000s I went to a community college to get a programming diploma, but I dropped out halfway. There was a moment, in a class teaching the Windows GDI API, where I realized that I had no desire to do that professionally. I did learn things about SQL and OS/400 that randomly came in handy a few times in my life. I did go back and successfully get a diploma in networking/tech support but I've never worked a day in that field.
Unprofessionally though, I was "that guy" for most of my life - friend of a friend or family would have a problem with their PC, and I would show up and help them out. I never got to the point where I would attempt to like, re-cap somebody's motherboard, but I could identify blown caps (and there was a time when there was a lot of those). As the role of PCs has changed, and the hardware has gotten better, I barely ever get to do this kind of thing these days. My parent's PC gathers dust in the corner because they can do pretty much do everything they need on their tablets, which they greatly prefer.
Today though... I used to spend a lot of time reading about developments in PC hardware, architectural improvements, but it doesn't matter as much to me anymore. I couldn't tell you what the current generation of Intel desktop CPUs use for a socket without looking it up. A lot of my interest used to be gaming related, and to this day the GPU industry hasn't fully recovered from the crypto boom. Nearly all of the games I'm interested in play well on console so I just play them there. I still fiddle with what I have now and then.
It is fun to think back on various challenges/experiences with it I've had over the years (figuring out IRQ/DMA management when that was still manual, Matsushita CD-ROM interfaces, trying to exorcise the polymorphic Natas virus from my shit). Who knows, maybe I'll get to curate a PC museum of all this shit someday haha.
