Hey I started animating not long ago, I thought it would be easier to make my comic
(I wanted to draw everything by hand at first then I tried the same on my phone)
But sadly my Characters look kinda ... Stiff? They aren't that curvy like cartoon characters but I don't know how to do it
What can I do to give them more life and let them look more like cars characters?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This Porsche is killing me with his cuteness, I want a Porsche so badly
Hi there! Thanks so much for the ask <3 It's funny you mention this topic because for the past few months.... I've been trying to figure out the same thing!! While I like how some of my older art looks, it feels rigid... like they're just images of cars with the eyes and mouth put on them. No "Pixar-feel in terms of "energy" and "emotions." I've been working on learning how to capture more energy + create my own style
Something that helps them look more "alive" and "energetic" is not following the severity of realistic lines. You can keep proportions to a point, but "warping and bending," I've learned, shows life
I have not done much beyond doodles, but here are some examples that I hope help you!
Tumblr media
this dude is squished up with tires pointing inward for kind of a fun vibe. I altered my style around last year to include eyebrows because they add emotions!
Tumblr media
And here, his body is kind of in an arc shape. Makes him look solid yet not rigid! Kinda... squishy xD In the (not long ago) past, I would've had him as a rigid box and the only emotion - HOPEFULLY - being in the eyes since mouths are a small annoyance I'm trying to be more flexible with
So maybe bending and warping your character's shape and giving them emotion in their from tires (since that's like their hands!) can make them feel more alive to you
In "Cars" Luigi is very expressive with his tires, as is Mater! It makes them look and feel fun
Another tip is tilting your character's bodies!
I didn't do this for ages, sadly. But thanks to the inspiration of some talented friends I'm grasping it and implementing it into my sketches
This one I'm working on now for a small project, and I am very proud of it! It incorporates tilt, expression in the eyes and mouth, and altered body shape so she's not such a stiff subject. Her headlights turn inward (not realistic, but makes her cartoonish and cute)
Tumblr media
I am in love with how this turned out so far and it excites me to think of how my work can keep changing and improving by expanding upon this style!
Of course, if you DO want to keep proportions a bit more real, here's another example that I feel has a Pixar-type feel and isn't stiff, even though I kept the "bendier" shapes with arcs at a minimum. I feel here the mood and expression comes across best in the eyes
Tumblr media
As someone who is still learning day by day, I'm can't give a "one size fits all, this is definitely the secret!!" bit of advice... but I hope this can help!
Don't be afraid to have fun roughly sketching your OCs until you hit on a look that just clicks in your head and feels right. That's part of the process till you find the style that makes you happy. And a helpful hint: simpler styles are going to be easier to animate at first!
Feel free to reach out if you ever have any more questions!
~ Ginger

DALLAS
Dallas is my resident jock lets talk about what positions you can catch him playing in his various sports.  Baseball is his main and I'd say it's where he finds his most success in most of my verses.  In high school he rotated most infield positions but in college he mostly plays first base where his long wingspan can be utilized.  He's also great at bat and is usually a heavy hitter.  In hockey Dallas plays the right wing position.  Thanks to his large stature while he's not the fastest player on the ice he has incredible aim and shooting skills.  Dallas is also known to be fairly aggressive on the ice.  Basketball rounds out the last of Dallas's favorite sports.  It was the sport most heavily pushed by his father so it's definitely the sport he drops the fastest but while he played he was an excellent shooting guard.
Tumblr media
LEO
Leo has been speaking French as long as he's been speaking English.  His mother is a native French speaker and always dreamed of being able to speak with her children in her native tongue.  All of Leo's nannies have spoken French, but some had varying dialects so he'd pick up regional phrases that would bewilder his mother.  It's his instinct to curse in French before English and the more passionate he is speaking about something the more likely he is to accidentally slip in a french word or phrase as his mind is going a mile a minute.
HARLAN
For many years after his mother's disappearance it was just Harlan and his father, Mathias.  How they each handled that trauma was two sides of the same coin while Harlan became obsessed with the case, Mathias shut it out entirely.  The more time that went by the less Mathias spoke of his late wife.  Despite his silence Harlan was still very surprised when his father remarried about ten years later.   Harlan was 23 and within the next year he had a half brother on the way.  It takes a while (and a fair amount of therapy) before he can even really address his step mom.  He does eventually come around on being a big brother despite the age difference.
FIN
Fin's favorite genre of music is classic rock and that has everything to do with the fact that's what they were raised on.  Fin's dad was constantly listening to Rush, Zeppelin, Boston, etc.  It's the music they learned to drum too and is a tether to their father who they don’t have much else in common with. These artists created a pipeline for them getting involved in the punk scene (not something their dad generally approved of but he's a jerk so it doesn't matter what he thinks!!).  While Fin will always have a complicated relationship with their father they are thankful to at least have this brief common ground with him.
TJ
When TJ first left her small town to pursue her boxing career there was a period where it felt like it was going nowhere.  She spent countless hours training and it felt futile to continue (not even underground clubs wanted to take her on).  She was a newcomer who needed to prove her worth and while she's never one to back down from a challenge she needed a physical outlet that sparring just wasn't doing for her.  So, she was convinced to give roller derby a try despite never being on skates a day in my life.  Learning to skate humbled her and being on the track helped trained her reflexes in a vital way.  After three years TJ hung up her skates when she started booking more fights (she still goes and supports her former teammates whenever possible).

“She had the heavy black makeup thing going on, shoe-polish black hair, black clothes, black boots, pale skin. She was goth or emo or whatever they called that look now.”
-From the Mickey Bolitar series
.
Recently finished all of the Myron Bolitar—and Mickey Bolitar—books by Harlan Coben and I have to say that Ema was one of my favorites from Mickey’s series. She’s smart, cool, and doesn’t back down—exactly the type of person I wished I could’ve been in high school. Since my read through of Myron and Mickey finished, I’ve started watching ‘The Innocent” on Netflix to get my fix. 😂

If you like great horror and fantasy stories, if you love the original "The Twilight Zone," or films such as Roger Corman's "Masque of the Red Death," with Vincent Price, Charles Beaumont is a name you should know. Friend and/or mentor to many of the best writers in the fields mentioned above (Ray Bradbury, Richard Matheson, Harlan Ellison, etc. etc.) he's been aptly described by them as "a blazing comet, gone too soon." He died a mysterious death, wasting away at only 38, but man did he write some incredible stories! He's one of those writer's writers, where bigger names marvel at his imagination and talent. He wrote a whole lot of the best episodes of "The Twilight Zone,"--for me, that particularly includes "The Howling Man." His work can be a little difficult to find in bookstores, unless you have a really good one, that probably deals in used books (though I believe some can be found on Amazon--"The Howling Man" collection is a good one). There's a documentary called "Charles Beaumont: The Short Life of Twilight Zone's Magic Man," that I dearly want to see. It has interviews with tons of great writers who knew him, were his friends, or were influenced by him. I envy you if you like this kind of fiction, and don't know his work: today is your Lucky Day. ;)

Hypertension: Fewer Side Effects with ARBs than ACE Inhibitors For New Patients
Tumblr media
MedicalResearch.com Interview with: George Hripcsak, MD, MS. Chair and Vivian Beaumont Allen Professor of Biomedical Informatics Department of Biomedical Informatics, Columbia University Irving Medical Center New York, NY MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? Response: ACE inhibitors and ARBs are anti-hypertension drugs that have related yet distinct mechanisms of action, and they are both recommended as first-line therapies for treating hypertension. There have been no large head-to-head comparisons of ACE inhibitors and ARBs, although there are several studies with limited size and often restricted (e.g., high-risk) populations. While there are some conflicting results in the literature, the current evidence seems to indicate that they are similar in effectiveness but that ACE inhibitors have more side effects (e.g., cough and angioedema). MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings? Response: We confirmed that in our population of first-time anti-hypertension drug users, effectiveness was similar and that ACE inhibitors did indeed have more side effects. Cough and angioedema were clear. Pancreatitis and gastrointestinal bleed were also detected but did not pass the strict Bonferroni criteria, meaning that the differences for these latter two could still be due to chance. MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report? Response: Our report indicates that new hypertension patients should favor ARBs instead of ACE inhibitors. We did not study patients already taking anti-hypertensive medications, so our results do not directly pertain to patients switching drugs, and if patients are already tolerating their current anti-hypertensive medications well, our study does not point to changing. MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work? Response: Future research should look at subgroups of patients who may see a difference in benefit between the two drug classes, and look at specific drugs within the classes. Any disclosures? This study was funded in part by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Two authors are employees of Janssen Research and Development with interests in Johnson & Johnson, and the paper enumerates additional disclosures for the authors. This file contains a list of novels and stories which contain one or more Artificial Intelligence (AI) characters.  Most of characters whose intelligence places a title on this list are effected or affected through the use of hardware, software or genetic alteration (rarely).  Additions and corrections would be most appreciated as the list compiler <Garet Sheppard> has not read all of the works listed here - or even a significant portion, and will probably never have a chance to do so. My thanks to Dan Bloch and Robert Stanley for suggestions, ideasand editing.

expanded definitions:
All of the following should be able to pass the Turing test,  and should be/have been (at the minimum in their original forms) products of human or alien intelligence.  "Standard" definitions of intelligence apply.
androids (A) - robots in humanoid form, these can be mechanical and/or organic (_Do androids Dream of Electric Sheep_).
computer systems (C) - these range in size and type from a fair sized mini computer (_Ariel_) to an planetary
computer (_Colossus_) to a galactic network with one  single mind (_Speaker for the Dead_).
humans in computerized/program/digitized form (H) - these tend to be copies of people which only exist in computerized form - such as the hacker in (_Neuromancer_) and folks of City Memory in (_Eon_).
non-mechanical, human created intelligences (N) - beings  which have been (in most cases) genetically altered or are biological (_Blood Music_).  NOT forced evolution
other intelligences (O) - beings which are difficult to categorize: anything Berserker, tanks, books, planets,  planets (Asimov's Gaia), satellites, etc.  Where (O) is used, the particular form has also been named when known.
programs (P) - able to move independently from one computer system to another, usually created by a program(mer) _The Adolescence or P1_).
robots (R) - constitute functional and specialized beings which are mobile and are not (S) or (P).  Anything between vaguely humanoid (Dr. Who's Cybermen) and computers on wheels (R2D2) can be considered robots of the 'functional'  robot class.  'Specialized' robots are those which are geared/optimized to performing one job - they can look like  either androids (The Terminator) or functional robots (Val's  from _Pirates of the Thunder_).
ships/computer systems (S) - essentially an (A) which is only mobile in the form of a (star) ship (_Pirates of the Thunder_). However, there are cases where the (S) is essentially a well programmed (R) which is only mobile as stated (_The Number of the Beast_).
cyborgs/mechanical humans (Y) - strictly speaking these are not  AI. The definition here is that the (Y) is either (1) a human  brain in control of a computer system/star ship (_The Ship Who Sang_) where at the very least the person's brain has  been modified to contain computerized parts (_The Rapture Effect?_) (Did you ever wish that you could have a math co-processor?). (Y)'s are NOT (for the purpose of this  list) organic beings whose natural body parts have beenreplaced by mechanical ones (ie. Luke Skywalker after his forearm was severed, or bionic people). unsure/no idea (?) - just what it says, so someone PLEASE read  it and tell me what type is is and whether it belongs here.
evolved AI being (e) - usually begin as man-made devices hich then develop intelligence on their own (_Valentina_).

WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE is a twice-monthly podcast in the style of community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale, featuring local weather, news, announcements from the Sheriff's Secret Police, mysterious lights in the night sky, dark hooded figures with unknowable powers, and cultural events.
"With its uncanny blend of the macabre and the mundane, the news out of Night Vale sounds like what might occur if Stephen King or David Lynch was a guest producer at your local public radio station." - NY Times Turn on your radio and hide. Disclaimer: WTNV does not in anyway belong to me, it belongs to Joseph Fink and Jeffery Cranor. I made this book for people who need to follow along with words, would rather read then listen. Please support the podcast and the books, thank you!

MONEY MADNESS. Film Classics, 1948. Hugh Beaumont, Frances Rafferty, Harlan Warde, Cecil Weston. Screenwriter: Al Martin. Director: Sam Newfield (as Peter Stewart).
There is a small but elite set of noir films that begin with a man getting off a bus (or train) with only a suitcase. The town is usually in warmer climes, and all he owns is likely to be in the suitcase, but…

🌹 Happy Valentine's Day 2018! 🌹
If there's one thing a girl might like, it's flowers, and if they're in her favorite color, all the better! Enjoy this lil picture of a faultlessly caring man presenting his beloved girl with just that. 😊
and this was also just a really nice excuse to paint an evening sky reflection on his silver paint that I soooo love 😁
