I have discovered @skylerwitherspoon’s prompts, and I’m taking a break from the main ones I’ve been using to write this one. With every poem I write, I feel lighter. I may write more from this prompt list today, depending on my health. But here is Prompt 14.
TW: Grief, Sibling Abuse, Jealousy, Exploit, Animal Death

while I was grooming a dog today he at one point sighed so heavily that some of the hair Id shaved off him blew off the table. I was a little insulted!
Still thinking about the grooming client a couple days ago with a dog that had lost her left front leg over the summer who, at the very end of our discussion about the owner's concerns regarding that and the haircut we would do, adds, "Oh, and she might be scared of the clippers now, I dunno. It was the lawnmower that got her."
And I'm just like,
Anyway, she was not scared of the clippers but she did panic a little at the feeling of the blade pulling at her mats, so I just dropped to a shorter length than we'd originally hoped to do so it would go through easier and she was fine. Very sweet dog. Very unfortunate incident that is going to haunt me.
Hi! Holly Mop is SO unbelievably cute and she looks a lot like an even smaller version of my grandma’s Havanese dog. Do you know what breed/what mix she is? Sorry if you’ve mentioned before, I tried searching but couldn’t find it
Aw thank you. Ms Mop is a Shih Tzu, so you weren’t far off!
That post stirring drama about off standard and mixed breed dog prices... you do not even want to KNOW how much I would pay for a short haired Havanese because being caught breeding them gets you kicked out of the CKC.
More tiny dog propaganda! This is Jack, my tiny precious boy who passed away several years ago. We found him at a local shelter, folks have said he was probably some sort of Maltese or Havanese mix. He was the sweetest, gentlest pup, and I wanted to share his cuteness.
I was actually mildly afraid of small dogs until a few years before I got him - my only encounters with small dogs had involved dogs who had never had their bodily autonomy respected, which went about as well as you'd expect. And then I met my friend's Yorkie service dog, and discovered just how wonderful the little guys can be.
Jack was such a little charmer. I quickly lost track of how many people met him and ended up saying things like "I'm usually terrified of dogs, but he's so little and sweet, he's barely scary at all! Do you think he'd let me pet him/hold him?" (my answer was always "let's see how he feels about it", and his answer was almost always "new friend? soft warm lap? pets? yes hi I love you! 😍")
TINY DOG PROPAGANDA. I love this little man's coat.
Heyyyyy TS3 people. Anybody feel like confirming the dog/cat breed names for me because the wiki is uh. Questionable.
I typed out the list already I just need confirmation on how correct it is and if I'm missing anything.

So I was thinking about Pokemon dogs about what type of real world dog they'd be. (Not including the fox Pokemon like Vulpix, the legendaries, and the Eevee line because what are they even?) Other folks have their ideas, I'm sure, but these are mine.

Been ages since I dogposted on here, and my family's dog count has changed since then, so here's an important update on my family's current two dogs, Sam and Hayden
She was a poodle terrier havanese something mix. I mean smaller dogs do live considerably older on average barring breed health issues which are often negated by being cross bred several times over. She was a hungry girl who stayed pretty spry into old age though she did go deaf and half blind (injury). Girl ate to live and I like to think she chose to go out after one last feast. She even stole some of my niece’s baby crackers after eating all that that night.
But 19… that’s still crazy for a dog. She must have loved being alive.
when we took my dog to get groomed the lady thought he was a cockapoo and I was like "no he's a havanese mix" ( with Yorkie and shih tzu specifically) and she was like "really? he's too big to be that"
and I was like!!! lol I've been saying this for years he's big for a dog that's supposedly all teeny dog breeds
we got him from a friend bc their shorkie had babies with a havanese but I'm like!!! hm there's definitely another breed in tht havanese that is making him big!!! yeah he's a lil chunky lmao but I'm convinced he has to be a lil bit of something else
on a very basic level i am not anti doodle, even the poorly bred ones usually are temperamentally just fine if not a bit anxious or energetic. most of them do fine with families and id rather see them with pet owners than other more intense breeds. I AM staunchly anti fad-breeding and unethical breeding practices whcih unfortunately is the reality of the vast majority of doodle breeders (though pure bred dogs are absolutely also plagued by shitty breeders)
i do think some of the mixes made are Bat Shit and poorly thought out (ie husky x poodle) or just completely redundant (ie bichon x poodle) but a lot of them are produced to fill a growing demand in the USA for a non shedding (not all doodles are non shedding which i will explain if anyone wants to know), "family friendly" companion dog that can easily adapt to a suburban or urban environment. personally i *do* think plenty of purebred dogs actually meet this need, (poodles, maltese, mini schnauz, bichon, coton de tulear, havanese ❤️❤️❤️❤️, cresteds, boston terriers, lowchen, etc) but they are typically small dogs (a lot of doodle owners, tho not all, want an 20-60lb dog) or they may still be a little too high energy to be companion dogs (spoos).
There's still also the pervasive myth that hybrid dogs are healthier than purebreds, which is a misconception about genetics and ethical breeding practices, but it's hard to get people to change their minds.
Personally i think instead of shunning doodle breeders from purebred dog circles, it might be better to at the very least Educate and Provide resources for those that actually want to take the steps to breed as ethically as possible, (ie health testing, titling dogs, having a drawn up "standard" or function that Makes Sense, and being careful about choosing sire and dam, etc), even to the point of mentoring and selling breeding prospects to RESPONSIBLE doodle breeders. We also need to continue to educate people on spotting red flags in dog breeders and shifting the focus from buying a puppy to finding a breeder you want a dog from
Because the reality is regardless of how much push back doodle owners and breeders get from the purebred community, they are still going to be bred and going to have demand so long as we are living in a nuclear family style hellscape, and the further purebred communities push doodle owners and breeders away, the less likely they are to ever interact with purebred dogs and communities ever which tbh is vital for the production of temperamentally sound and healthy dogs.
