Got into a debate on the Game Bakers Discord regarding Haven. One... interesting fellow suggested that Yu and Kay were wrong for doing what they did to escape the Apiary, the ending where they're recalibrated is the "Least Bad Ending," and brainwashing isn't inherently unethical.

Haven has a lot of rough edges and design flaws, but it’s lovely little adventure following one of gaming’s more adorable couples. Kay and Yu escape to an alien world so that they may live in peace, but when their only form of shelter gets wrecked they must search for parts to repair it. You explore, engage in turn based combat, gather resources, and slowly repair your ship. Combat is about using the right damage types and knowing when to block, but due to how attacks must be charged up this leads to several delays or actions not happening soon as possible. Isles start to feel similar to each other after awhile, and each isle eventually loops back into previous ones to form one grid of a map. There’s so many other problems, but I don’t want to list all of them. Haven isn’t exactly a good video game, but there have been something to keep me hooked. Gliding around is rather zen, and despite the graphics not being the best the game has good art direction. Dialogue can get pretty annoying, but Yu and Kay are a pretty likable couple. Watching their relationship grow, seeing how they deal with problems, and cope with their trauma. Haven is all about what it takes to maintain a healthy romantic relationship and the sacrifices that come with it, and maybe that’s what I found special about it.. Here’s a link to my full review.

I had some fun looking through what Playstation recommends as LGBTQ+ games and came across a game by the name of Haven where the gender dynamic between its two lovers can be chosen from male Kay and male Yu, male Kay and female Yu, and female Kay and female Yu. I immediately wondered why the developers did not allow a full combination of binary genders with female Kay and male Yu, their official response of Steam is posted below:

"We decided not to implement that possibility for a lot of technical reasons, also to keep the complexity down and not offer too many choices, but the main reason is that with inverted personalities Yu and Kay seemed much more stereotyped. They didn’t sound anymore like the modern couple we imagined in the first place. Imagine a woman that likes cooking and who is prudent and a man that likes mechanics and is a hothead? Our original Yu and Kay broke those gender stereotypes and we didn't want to bring them back in the game. For our team, representation and inclusion are fundamental beliefs, for gender, ethnicity, sexual preferences and all forms of inclusion, and have been included from the original design of the game. We hope this clarifies! Thank you for playing the game."

In short the developers were attempting to avoid stereotyped masculinity and femininity, however in attempting to do so they created other issues. First and foremost is that gender stereotypes vary depending on time and place. Every society is different and even between one generation to another gendered stereotypes and expectations will fluctuate and change so trying to go counter to any one specific set of stereotypes even within a narrow time and geographic/cultural range is doomed to quickly become dated, at best it would serve as a historical piece on what the stereotypes at the time were.

Next whether intentional or not the developers have canonized genders for the two characters with Yu being the more feminine of the pair and Kay the more masculine. And in doing so fell into some of those same gendered stereotypes they were trying to avoid with Yu being shorter, more emotional, and with long hair. What I'm saying is that its impossible to avoid a gendered perception of a character so its very hard to impossible to truly make a pair modern and defying of gender stereotypes like the developers aimed to do because what is masculine/feminine is so nebulous and undefined and so quick to change across time and culture.

At the same time I do value the attempt, I see what they tried to do and it is far more a positive than a negative. I don't think having all gender combinations is even necessarily the better outcome to the one that we got (with only 3 combinations). Making something groundbreaking is hard and as I have yet to finish the game I cannot yet say if Haven has succeeded or not. I'll update this post at a later date with conclusions.

I have returned! Finally got my new computer and everything I need set up. Currently playing Haven and I love the game so much already (I'm 4 hours in, already know which ending I want from the game and absolutely adore Oink).
