#having a mentor as a comedian
Getting to Know Comedian Silas
I would say every comedian I’ve been on stage with...
1. What made you want to explore comedy? I think I’ve always been a silly kid and I kinda just stumbled into it when I started telling jokes, and I was getting laughs, and I would think “I kind of like that.’’ So, I would sneak in my little jokes; I would write, and people would laugh. Long story short, I went to an open mic, I didn’t bomb, so I said “Okay, this is something I could continue…

just finished interviewing bellini for one of my finals in my comedy class and i'm losing my mind over bellini going on a tangent about how if he were grading my comedy over the past year he would give me an A+. like i didn't ask him to say that and it wasn't related to any of the questions i asked but you better believe i'm leaving that in to be like see professor? BELLINI gave me an A+!!!
#it was very sweet lmao and a great conversation over all#last time i was in town i told bellini a one-liner i came up with about the 2SLGBTQIA+ acronym having the exact qualifications#for a strong password (8 letters a number and a special character) and he said he's repeated it to several people#and it's always gotten a big laugh!! which is so cool!!! i'm not typically a ''joke'' writer my stuff is usually character-driven#so that's awesome that both bellini AND scott really loved that line!!#bellini in particular has been such a fan of my comedy since we first met (across multiple eras now)#like we met while i was working on my musical ''other girls'' and he was so excited to hear about it when i first mentioned it#and had me send him the recording as soon as i got it#and he's been so helpful in developing aubrey as a solo sketch character too#it's so cool having a professional comedian (especially one with such a meticulously good ear for comedy like bellini)#be as excited about my work as i am and be able to help me refine it into something even better#and especially as a queer comedian today who's finding it difficult to navigate this landscape of being ''bad representation''#bellini having been an openly gay comedy writer for almost double my lifetime is such a great resource to have!!#of course a lot of this is true for scott too (tho scott hasn't actually *seen* any of my comedy yet. he's just heard me tell jokes from it#but bellini is such a special mentor for me and i'm so happy we randomly connected over mouth congress over a year ago

Big City Greens Plants Season 4 Premiere For September 23 on Disney Channel + Guest Cast List
Bingo Bango! Disney Branded Television has set primetime premieres for Big City Greens Season 4 slated to debut Saturday September 23 at 8:00PM EST only on Disney Channel and streaming October 25 only on Disney+.
The episodes airing on September 23 – 'Truck Stopped / Jingled' – have "Tilly and Cricket wrestle with indecision at a truck stop between Big City and the country" in the former, while the latter sees Tilly becoming a Big City jingle writer and rising through the ranks. In addition to premiering on Disney Channel, episodes will also be added to Disney Plus on October 25, 2023.
Guest Stars on Season 4 include musican Michael Bolton as Rick Razzle on Jingled where Tilly wants to become a Big City jingle writer and rising through the ranks. Other guest stars for Season Four include June Diane Raphael (Marvel "Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur"), Tom Green ("The Tom Green Show"),NHL player Brad Marchand,Margo Martindale (Sony Pictures "Cocaine Bear"),podcaster Justin McElroy, Tim Meadows (ABC Network "The Goldbergs"), Dean Norris (AMC "Breaking Bad", "Better Call Saul"), Comedian Ms. Pat, Amy Seradis (Netflix "Bojack Horseman", Lucasfilm "The Mandalorian") and comedian Trevor Wallace.
Since it's debut on 2018, Big City Greens has been one of Disney Television Animation recent hits with multiple shorts, a NHL game -themed broadcast special in collaboration with ESPN and a animated feature film based on the series is on production slated for a 2024 release, the series spawned a new legacy of Disney TVA creators like Natasha Kline with chicano lead-driven animated comedy series "Primos" slated for 2024 and more animated shows on development for Disney Channel by Big City Greens Alumnis. (Cheyenne Curtis,Monica Ray, Amy Hudkins,Raj Bruggemann and Houghton Brothers mentor C.H Greenblatt) who will be getting series orders in the coming months.
The new season will include the show's 100th episode, which is a major landmark for any animated series, but especially for a Disney Channel series with few ever making it quite that far. "Season four is pure insanity," says Chris Houghton, Big City Greens co-creator and executive producer. "Tilly becomes a commercial jingle-writer, Cricket tries stand-up comedy, Bill loses his mind like six times, and Gramma dabbles in minimalism. The fact that we have such a fun arena to play in when it comes to these characters is not lost on us or our crew. Even though we’ve told so many stories with these characters, this season feels fresher than ever." "There are some very funny and silly episodes in this season," adds Shane, "like 'Handshaken' where country folks act like western gunslingers, but assert their power through firm handshakes. There are also a few emotional episodes that reach out and give your heart a good squeeze – 'Family Tree' is one that makes me tear up every time I watch a cut of it. And biggest of all, Chip Whistler is back! This season may have more action, adventure, and thrills than any previous season! And here's a couple rapid-fire teases you’ll see in season four: Gloria hires a new café employee, Vasquez goes to therapy, and the kids meet a long lost family member."
Additionaly Big City Greens will continue with new shorts trought the Disney TVA multi-platform division trought Chibi Tiny Tales, Broken Karaoke,Theme Song Takeover, How NOT To Draw & Random Rings.
Big City Greens characters will continue to host on the Disney Television Animation's crossover compilation series "Chibiverse" as it's second season is slated to debut Saturday September 23.

RGG Ishin Actor AU
I've seen a few posts about an Actor AU for RGG Ishin, so here are some of my ideas about the cast of this AU.
Kiryu is the industry newbie, and a rising star. He's also a formidable martial artist who does his own stunts, and he's got some impressive acting skills, too. Up until now, he's mostly been in low-budget films and TV dramas as troubled heroes and occasionally as the romantic hero as well. He's also worked with Saejima and Ryuji in action movies, so he's on pretty good terms with them both. But now, he's finally landed his very first leading role as Sakamoto Ryoma/Saito Hajime, in his very first big-budget epic film. While a little nervous about working with a bunch of big-name actors, he's quick to win everyone over through his talents, his skills, and his genuine kindness off-camera.
Majima is an A-list actor, well-known for his impressive acting range. He's never been typecast in any single character type, and he's also a delight to work with. While Majima initially started out with acting in crime dramas and films, he has since branched out to other genres and expanded his horizons significantly. He's also won many awards for his films, and he's also done some acting in Hollywood films, too. He gets along pretty well with Kiryu on the set of Ishin, and he's more than happy to become sort of a mentor for the newbie actor.
Nishiki is an A-list actor and model. He started out his career as a model, then his acting career began with romance dramas. Now, Nishiki is one of the most bankable stars in the industry. While Nishiki does have a bit of a reputation as a diva, many directors would give anything to work with him, because having his name attached to a project will secure a film's success. He's widely considered a sex symbol in the industry because of his good looks and modelling skills. Nishiki's also got an impressive acting range that's won him many awards, whether he's playing romantic heroes or dark brooding villains like Okada Izo. On the set of Ishin, he and Kiryu get along surprisingly well, and eventually become pretty close friends.
Saejima is a former action star who's starting to branch out into dramatic films. Like Kiryu, Saejima's also a skilled martial artist who does his own stunts, and he's got the skills to be a dramatic actor as well. He's also close friends with Majima, since the both of them have known each other long before they entered the film industry. Sometimes, when he reads his scripts, he has his own ideas about his characters, and he'll always give suggestions to directors about certain things to implement. Ishin is his first venture into historical pieces, and if this movie is successful, then his serious acting career is all but guaranteed.
Shibusawa, Awano, and Kuze are all industry veterans who are particularly well-known for their work in historical films and in crime films, too. Kuze started out as a pro boxer before he switched to acting, but he's not the biggest fan of the industry parties and events. He plans to retire from acting soon, and hopes to run his own boxing gym as a coach after filming for Ishin is wrapped up. Awano is both an award-winning actor and a filmmaker, known for playing characters who rebel against the social structure. In his younger days, he was also something of a party animal, and he still enjoys attending industry parties even now. Shibusawa started out his career as an actor, but these days, he mostly produces films. He's exceptionally talented, and incredibly influential in the entire film industry, and he's also very well-known in the Western world, too.
Zhao is another well-known actor who started out in TV dramas before venturing into films. He began his career as a stand-up comedian and impressionist, but he's mostly been in dramatic films after proving his acting chops in his debut film. Zhao loves working on historical films, and he often takes great care to research the time period so he can apply his knowledge to the characters he plays. He's also a great chef, and he loves to cook meals for his co-stars during breaks in filming. He also owns a successful Chinese restaurant in Yokohama, which he runs with his close friend Tesso.
Joon-gi Han is a K-pop idol based in Japan, and he's also starting a film career like Kiryu. While he's already pretty popular in his native Korea, he's become a huge sensation and sex symbol in Japan, thanks to his modelling collaboration Nishiki, and his musical collaborations with several J-pop idols. Han initially started his acting career as romantic heroes, but he's since proven to be even better at playing sinister characters. He has an incredibly devoted international fanbase who have been cheering him on ever since he ventured into acting. He's also a skilled martial artist, and he does his own stunts much like Kiryu and Saejima. When he's not acting or singing, Han manages a super elite, exclusive nightclub in Tokyo.
Ryuji is both an actor and a professional wrestler. He actually started out as a bodyguard for a celebrity, then became a successful wrestler with the WWE. He also has some decent acting chops, though he's mostly appeared in action movies. Nevertheless, his presence never fails to delight audiences, since he knows how to make all his scenes memorable. Ishin is his first venture into dramatic films, but he's nothing if not dedicated to doing well in the role of Saigo Kichinosuke. His most favorite scene in the Ishin film is his homoerotic bathhouse fight with Kiryu, and he's not ashamed to admit this in promotional interviews.
Haruka is a J-pop idol who's starting a film career to shed her wholesome, cutesy popstar image. While she's only a teenager, she's got a lot of potential as an actress, and she gets along with everyone on the set of Ishin. She and Kiryu form a close bond that lasts even after filming is wrapped up, with Kiryu becoming something of a father figure to her.
Mine is both an A-list actor and a supermodel. Like Nishiki, Mine started out his career as a model before he made his acting debut in a historical movie. Since then, he's been in a variety of epic historical pieces with settings that range from the Heian period to the Meiji period. Mine's good looks and modelling skills have also made him a sex symbol, and his mysterious aloofness has only enhanced his appeal. He's particularly close to Daigo Dojima, who helped him get a start in acting.
This is everything that I have so far. What do you all think? If you have suggestions for other characters, feel free to add them on!

Brett Ball 🫡 Salute😍✊🏿🙏🏿
It was very early in Brett Ball’s experience as a student-athlete with the women’s basketball team that things did not go her way. She came to South Carolina in the summer of 2011 as a scholarship athlete. But before the season began, she was diagnosed with myocardial non-compaction in the left ventricle— a rare genetic heart condition that made it impossible for her to play basketball.
photos of brett ball as a team member and as a Ph.D. candidate
Years: 2011-15
Position: Team vlogger
Key stats: Ball was diagnosed with a heart condition and never got to play for the Gamecocks, but she stayed on scholarship all four years and helped fans get an inside look at the team through her behind-the-scenes videos.
Degrees: Bachelor’s in criminal justice, UofSC; master’s in integrated communications, University of Mississippi
Current position: Ph.D. student in health communication, University of Florida
“I totally could have just said, ‘I’m leaving, this is not going to work out for me,’ ” says Ball, a Ph.D. student in health communication at the University of Florida. “But Coach Staley honored my scholarship. I was still part of the team. When we would travel, I was there; when we had film, I was there; I still attended practices. I did pretty much everything the team did, except work out and play.
“She still coached me as if I was on the court, but in a different way,” Ball says of Staley. “I had to be on time for practice. I had to be on time for class. She didn’t let me just go about in my own way.
“At first I didn’t like it because I was just so frustrated with not being able to play. I thought, ‘I’m not playing so why do I need to do these things.’ But it still made me feel part of the team because I was held to the same standards.
“I don’t know if she had ever had a player under her wing who didn’t play. What are you going to say to make them feel better? She would say there was nothing she could do to help me play, and the only thing she can do is be a guide and I totally respect that. The best thing she could do was be a support system.”
Staley and the basketball media team came up with an idea that Ball would do videos with her teammates to highlight their many off-the-court talents and build up excitement among fans. The show was called Ballin’ with Brett.
“Our team was pretty dynamic,” says Ball, who graduated from UofSC with a degree in criminal justice. “We could have had our own TV show. We had rappers, comedians, drama queens. We definitely had a team full of personalities.”
Producing and hosting the videos got Ball interested in journalism and communications — an interest she has pursued since her time at South Carolina, earning a master’s in integrated communications from the University of Mississippi in her home state.
“It was as good an experience as I could have had without being able to play ball.”
She expects to complete her dissertation and Ph.D. in May. Her research focus is on mental health among African American female athletes, a subject she knows much about.
“Being nine hours away from home, if you’re not somewhere with resources — and USC had resources from A-to-Z — it can be difficult,” she says. “The school had people there who helped with the stress. We had two Black psychologists in the athletic department and that was really helpful for me. That’s how I got started looking into the mental health of athletes.”
Ball says she talked with her advisers and mentors at UofSC before each major life decision she has made. She says she is uncertain where her Ph.D. will take her, but lessons learned from her time with Staley and the Gamecocks women’s basketball program will never leave her.
“I am really interested in ways to improve the mental health of student-athletes. I want to figure out ways to destigmatize mental health and mental illnesses within the athletic and sports space.
“I want to use my experience with mental health, my experience not being able to play and experience with cases of depression and anxiety and I want to be able to help athletes, even if it is from an academic standpoint, about what Black female student athletes have to go through."

reasons why i think mimi (jing yuan’s lion) is still alive
first of all, qingzu (the npc in the exalting sanctum) seems like she’s just lying about random things. for example, each of the following secrets she tells us can be easily debunked.
1) she lies about jing yuan’s master (jingliu) being a master comedian
Qingzu: Lots of folks know Jing Yuan had a mentor. But most people get it wrong and think the mentor was some swordmaster. Nah, only a few people know the real deal — the mentor was actually a great crosstalk comedian.
Qingzu: Jing Yuan spent the first 500 years of his life as a crosstalk comedian. His comedy mentor was also his perfect partner on stage.
Qingzu: And now, the sword prodigy, Yanqing, only stayed by Jing Yuan's side to learn the art of crosstalk.
Qingzu: We have this annual arts and culture show where Jing Yuan and Yanqing do a crosstalk skit together. Last year's The Cowardly Escort was really awesome...If you get a chance, you should come and check it out too!
2) she lies about yanqing being old and secretly being a vidyadhara. if you read yanqing’s lore then you know that he’s actually a xianzhou native
Qingzu: According to the public records at the Seat of Divine Foresight, Yanqing is still young. But word on the street is that Yanqing ain't as young as he seems. In reality, he's already of advanced years. Some of us Vidyadhara folks are like that too, where we stop aging when we hit adolescence.
Qingzu: Yanqing used to have a pair of beautiful pointy ears...but one day, a rat infestation broke out at the Seat of Divine Foresight during Yanqing's afternoon nap. That was when a giant rat nibbled his ears' pointy ends away...
Qingzu: Poor Yanqing, he's been afraid of rats since then. To protect his own image, he kept his true lineage a secret, claiming to be a young Xianzhou native.
3) she lies about the luofu guards; im simply assuming that she’s lying because this is just so outlandish lmaoo
Qingzu: Those guards over there at the entrance, we call their leader Yutie...But the truth is, they're all Yutie. Yutie is not a person's name, but an organization.
Qingzu: This organization is well-hidden and powerful, protecting the safety of the Seat of Divine Foresight for generations.
Qingzu: The Yutie standing there changes every day, but you'd never know it. They're all trained to act the same and assume the same personality.
Qingzu: If you catch a glimpse of a Yutie's face, all the other' faces will simply disappear. They just fade away, like they were never even there.
qingzu choosing to lie makes sense because if you ask her “Have you got any secrets you can share about the Seat of Divine Foresight?” she literally has no reason, at this point, to share any classified secrets. we haven’t even “saved” the luofu yet. so of course she’s going to mess with us. she also has an established personality of being...sassy?? kinda rude ig? since this is one of her first dialogues to us:
Qingzu: If you've really got nothing better to do, I think the Petrichor Inn is looking for cleaners...I know the proprietress there and can introduce you. It might just help you shake the stereotype of being a lazybones.
like wtf why would she say this 😭
finally, the last secret that she shares is the one that we are all familiar with: the one about snowmoon.
i find it pretty interesting that after she finishes talking about his lion, the mc has the choice to say “I’m afraid that doesn’t sound real to me.”
MC: Is this just a fable that you use to trick kids? Qingzu: At your age, you don't consider yourself a child?
MC: Which of these stone lions here is Snow Lion the Third? Qingzu: ...They're all pretty similar. Let me think, is it that one to the east? MC: Are you just making this up?
i think this dialogue branch was supposed to clue us into realizing that she was just BSing her way through the story, but i don’t think this was obvious enough in v1.0 (since the lion story was the only one she told back then), SO my theory is that the devs added the other 3 stories about jingliu, yanqing, & yutie in v1.1 in order to make it more obvious that she is just a deeply unserious person. i mean, it would come off as different if those additional stories were unlocked after a certain quest, but if they were added as is then we can assume that they were always meant to be there.
also, if snowmoon and mimi WERE the same and snowmoon died centuries ago, i think it’d be kinda weird if jing yuan just had his diary about his lion lying around?? like it’s literally just here on his chair
Tumblr media
although i do want to say, it’s not impossible for him to want to take out this journal and reminisce on his past entries IF his lion is dead. so this point alone does not do enough to debunk the “mimi is dead” theory, and we also have to consider just how much qingzu lies to us.
so tldr MIMI IS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!! i think?
anyways take all of this with a massive grain of salt <3 if mimi turns out to be canonically dead FOR REAL then i may actually wither away.
and if you made it this far thank you so much for reading all of my ramblings :)

If this isn’t something you’re interested, feel free to ignore this, but I really appreciated your thoughtful exploration of player approach/ play-style of the CR cast.
I’d love to know any similar insights you have on the playstyle of main-season D20 players, or any other actual play group you feel like writing about.
Again, totally understand if that’s not something you’re interested in delving into, just thought I’d ask!
Thanks! (For those wondering this is in reference to this post; this follow-up may also be relevant, and ignore what November 2023 me said, feel free to ask if you're confused). The only other show I could really attempt to do this for is NADDPod: it needs to be something longform (discounts D20), across multiple campaigns but in a similar system (discounts RQG and BCBP for only being one campaign and TAZ for doing a lot of system hopping - TAZ is also just tough because I came into it via MBMBAM so I already had very non-Actual Play perceptions of the McElroy brothers), and have a pretty long body of work (discounts Worlds Beyond Number). D20's explicit genre requirements also make this very difficult, because some of this is informed by the types of characters they make in a similar setting.
Also, and you will see this with NADDPod below: an explicitly comedic vibe (D20, TAZ) makes it harder not because it's not a good way to run an actual play show, but because if you set those genre expectations, I think people gravitate to a different style. For example, everyone in D20 will do Big Red Button stuff because they're comedians; and no one is terribly naturalistic. This is also why incorporating shorter form shows is tough: for example, Sam and Laura went hard in Candela Obscura (and Sam in EXU Calamity), to great and fantastic effect in my opinion, despite being relatively cautious players in the main campaigns; Marisha and Liam, who tend towards big moments, have both shown some wonderful reserve and played background support roles in Candela and in their EXU series.
NADDPod is still tough because the roles one falls into in a three person party are a bit more rigid. Emily, Caldwell, and especially Jake tend to have pretty strong preferences and that informs a lot, but I am going to attempt it:
Emily and Caldwell are rules optimists; Jake is a rules realist. Murph is also a rules realist. (actually, I can answer this specific one for D20 since it's not arc-dependent - Ally is an optimist, Siobhan is like, a realistic optimist, Zac is a realist, and Lou is a realist but he WILL razz you extremely hard if you say he can't do something).
Narrative is tough because with a three person party, everyone has a LOT of screentime. I also think that fundamentally, Murph runs games where everyone has a clear investment in an overarching plot, which is much easier to do in a natural way with three players than with seven. With that said Emily is all over the place - I think Moonshine and Callie have very internal and more background arcs compared to Fia who is much more milestone. Caldwell bounces between Big Red Button and Milestone in that like, as a result of a milestone he will then press the big red button and do something wild. Jake is very big red button to me.
Acting style is particularly difficult here because like, most comedians are going to ham it up on occasion. Caldwell is definitely the most dramatic-leaning and Jake the most naturalistic with Emily in-between.
Themes:
Emily: responsibility especially re: family/mentor expectations; determining what she wants rather than what others want (tied into the above); romantic relationships
Caldwell: also family/mentor relationships; identity but not in an "am I the mask way" and much more in a coming of age/figuring it out way.
Jake: ALSO family/mentor relationships; the mask/insecurity; letting go

Cosplay the Classics: Lucille Ball in the 1940s
The first time I ever saw Lucille Ball not playing Lucy Ricardo was when TCM aired Du Barry Was a Lady (1943) when I was a kid. She floored me in this movie. This woman that had branded herself on my brain via sitcom reruns as an expert comedian and legendary face puller was also this knockout glamour girl?! And it’s not that Lucy is gorgeous, I already knew that, it’s that the film treats her as such. She’s lit like a goddess and that raging technicolor photography was a match made in heaven with her red hair and bright blue eyes. Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing a lot more of her film work pre-I Love Lucy, including one of my all-time favorite movies, Dance, Girl, Dance (1940).
Ball might best be known now for her masterful work in television, as a performer and a producer, but boy her journey to get there was nothing to sniff at. Ball gradually carved out her niche in pictures by the end of 1930s, when she had already been in show business for the better part of a decade. Not fully satisfied with her work in film, Ball did double duty and heavily delved into radio. Between her radio work and her growing roles in pictures, she became the newest “Queen of the Bs.” (“B” referring to B pictures, lower budget films that were typically the second feature in the double features.)
Tumblr media
Lucy’s styling progression from the 1930s through the early 1940s
The type Ball most excelled at playing was brassy and headstrong with a penchant for banter that usually relied at least a bit on her comedic timing. The physical comedy we now know Ball excelled at is only present in fits and starts across her filmography of the 30s and 40s. Regardless, she is fantastic at delivering repartee, even when it’s not very well written.
Looking back from this side of decades of I Love Lucy continuously playing on our TVs (at least in the US), I get the feeling that lots of people might be unaware that Ball got her start in entertainment for her looks. (And that her acting and comedy skills came from diligent work!) She started as a fashion model and was a spokesmodel for Max Factor Cosmetics starting in the 1930s. Ball got her break as a Goldwyn Girl because she had the right look and good timing.
Reviewing her filmography to research this cosplay, the time around 1940 stood out as a turning point for her career (and, in turn, her look). Generally speaking in studio-era Hollywood, you knew you had made it when you became the type to cast rather than fitting the type of some other, more established star. And, when you became your own type, that was usually accompanied by a styling shift that emphasized your own features over adjusting your features to emulate another star. To illustrate, here are photos of Lucille Ball, Joan Bennett and Ginger Rogers taken when they were all working at RKO in the 1930s, alongside photos of them in the early 1940s, when they were all on their own paths. Ginger was a rising star for the studio in the 1930s, so hers became a dominant look. (An added note for Lucy’s career at the time, is that she was mentored by Rogers’ mother Lela at RKO.)
Tumblr media
Ball, Bennett, and Rogers above in the 1930s and below in the 1940s
This cosplay was roughly based on Ball’s signature styling in the mid-1940s, specifically around the time she made the film Lured (1947). (A movie which I feel could have easily spawned a series.) By this point she was settled into the hair and make-up we typically associate with Lucille Ball. Her eyebrows are a relatively thick, rounded arch and generally the roundness of her eyes is accentuated, instead of trying to elongate them. Her coppery curls are arranged around the center of her forehead with hair swept up at the temples. Her lipstick is applied in a manner that leans into the fullness of her lips while also emphasizing her slightly dubious expression. While I’ll admit a lot of these styling shifts correspond with beauty trend shifts from the 1930s into the 1940s, the execution of the trends are tailored to her unlike the '30s trends, as illustrated above.
By the time Du Barry was released in 1943, Ball’s red hair was already a selling point (though it was dyed much brighter for the sake of the technicolor). Her typical hair and makeup by the time Lured came out in 1947 only changed marginally from then through the 1950s. That is to say, even updating her look with trends like shorter, tighter cuts for women’s hair and stronger contrasting lines for make-up of the 1950s, Ball found the shapes that suited her and she stuck with them. It’s a beauty paradigm that makes her a joy to emulate, even on the closet-cosplay level I operate on!
Tumblr media
The references I used to put this cosplay together can be seen below:
Tumblr media
I also got a little bored at the prospect of editing these images, so I tried to replicate the photographic look of full-color portraits from 1940s fan magazines. Most notably, this photo of Janet Blair from the September 1943 issue of Modern Screen Magazine:
Tumblr media
----
AND, if you want to read more about Lured, I wrote about it a few years back for Noirvember!
OR, if you want to read more about Joan Bennett, I cosplayed her a while back!

I’ve been delaying working on/about one of my original ideas, because it’s beginning to veer too close to being The Marvelous Mrs Maisel: Part Two unintentionally.
I had an idea, long before the show was even thought up, about a young woman in the sixties, from a similar background to my great-grandmother (manners matter, women wore dresses and skirts only and were expected to marry, have children and be the dotting housewife), who completely rebels basically, against what was expected of her. This all stemming from a low point in her life, where some particular somethings causes her life to go from bad to worse, leading her to make a dramatic change in her life.
The dramatic change, I kept fluctuating between the character becoming a singer or an actress, maybe a musician for example but I just was never happy. Then one day, I could suddenly see her turning to comedy, in vein with the likes of British/Irish future female comedians/comic writers, like Victoria Wood, Aisling Bea or Catherine Tate to name a few or contemporary males comedians, who were getting to become successful at the time, like The Two Ronnies, before they were even that (Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett), to give an example.
In her new career choice, she befriends a fellow comedian, someone who knows the ins and outs of the world, who becomes somewhat of a mentor and friend to them. There’s also a bit of a flirtation/easy banter between them and their conversations but nothing really happens until, one day it does.
There is more to the story than this but just this section of my idea, I just think that it sounds too Midge/Lenny-coded, at least more than I had realised. The show did and has influenced how visually I saw the characters but I had this idea back in 2008/2009, so a while before the show aired.
I enjoy writing but I just don’t want anyone, if they ever read what I’ve written (and knows of TMMM), to ever think I’m copying the Palladino’s because I’m not.
Sorry for this ramble of mine, just my thoughts and self-doubt getting in the way again!
Also, my story is predominantly set in London, not New York.

tonight is a "getting emotional over paul bellini" kind of night <3
#just thinking about how lucky i am that not only did he see me being a nerd over mouth congress almost two years ago and reach out to say hi#but also that in our first conversation he asked about my comedy and immediately was interested in seeing where it could go#like i have a distinct type of dynamic with each of the kith people i know of course#but bellini's always going to be special to me bc he's the first one i met. he's the one who met me before i knew anyone related to kith#both scott and bruce met me as someone who already knew someone from the show. but bellini met me as just a random fan#like he didn't have to bring me into the world of kith as much as he did but he wanted to!#and idk i'm just thinking about it bc in my little interview i did with him for my final in a comedy class#i did ask him what it was about my comedy that made him think it had potential#and he gave such a thoughtful answer that really showed he thinks i'm funny and that i could be a great comedian#and he referenced past work i've shown him etc. and it was all in that great bellini tone where he's very complimentary#but it never feels disingenuous or like he's just being nice bc he respects you enough to tell you his honest opinions#i value a compliment from scott or bruce or paul very much bc they're all some of my favorite comedians and my mentors#and of course having a different dynamic with each of them means i will value their comments in different ways#and i wouldn't say i value one person's feedback more than another's#but there's always something special about bellini bc he's the one who has known me the longest and knew me before all of this#(technically he's the only one who got to know me as a teenager bc i was 19 when we met even tho my 20th birthday was a few weeks later)#and yeah i really hope he's having a good night tonight bc he deserves it

The SMGs
SMG-1 & SMG-2
Statues: Retired
Former Avatar: Juliano
The first SMGs ever created, the Prototypes. Created by Admin Byte, it wasn't for the purpose of guarding universes and keeping the meme cycle going, but for the Admin's own gain to mess with universes.
This failed, however, as SMG-1&-2 were kindhearted Guardians to their Avatar, Juliano. However, after an attack on their world, their Avatar died, and they were promoted to Admins. They are now known as Domain and Forum, respectively.
SMG0 & Niles
Statuses: Deactivated
Former Avatar: Fred
In the video game Mage, there was originally only a single SMG for the universe as Admin Byte intentionally didn't tell Admin Lag that two SMGs were needed for balance. However, this wasn't for long, as the God Box created Niles, a false SMG to pair with SMG0.
However, this wasn't to last, as after an attempt to repair his imperfect code, Niles went insane due to the God Box and killed his Avatar, Fred. Following a forced fusion between him and SMG0, creating SMGØ, a being hellbent on finding another Avatar and remaking the fallen universe.
The duo were put to rest by the combined efforts of Avatar Mario, his Guardians, and Fierce Deity Melony.
SMG1 & SMG2
Statuses: Semi-retired/Active
Former Avatar: Spudnick
While they lived in peace with their Avatar for many years, this was eventually broken when SMGØ landed in their universe, intent on shaping Spudnick to be a new Avatar. However, this failed, causing Spudnick's death and the destruction of their universe.
They now reside in the SM64 universe, being mentors to SMG3 and SMG4, and generally doing what they can to help out.
SMG3 & SMG4
Statuses: Active
Avatar: Mario
Their activation has been dubbed the Worst To Ever Happen. Several things went wrong, including the inclusion of SMGØ and SMGs 1&2. There have been many incidents regarding their universe, but they've always come out on top for their Avatar and friends, so they're typically left to handle themselves. They're remarkably close with their Admins, Forum and Domain.
SMG5 (Penta Knight) & SMG6
Statuses: Active
Introduced here!
Avatar: Kirby
SMG6 is a wandering comedian, and Penta Knight is an admirable warrior.
SMG7 & SMG10
Statuses: Active
Introduced here!
Avatar: Tulip
There was an accident when Guardians were being assigned, and SMG8 accidentally went to SMG9. To rectify this (it was already too late to switch it back), SMG7 was partnered to SMG10.
SMG10 is actually the more calm one of the duo, with SMG7 displaying the more energetic qualities of an even-numbered SMG.
SMG8 & SMG9
Statuses: Active
Introduced here!
Avatar: Nimbus
They're a bit more overprotective of Nimbus, as their first memory after landing was Lumiere kidnapping Nimbus.
SMG11 & SM12 (belongs to @duckapus )
Statuses: Active
Introduced here!
Avatar: Tune
They're the first SMG duo thus far to have an SMG (SMG12) fall in love with someone who wasn't their SMG partner.
SMGXIII (13) & SMGXIV (14)
Statuses: Active
Avatar: Sora
Due to certain quirks of the Kingdom Hearts universe, his SMGs have turned out looking like recolors of Roxas and Xion instead of him.
SMG15 & SMG16
Statuses: Active
Avatar: Frenzy
Currently working to help Frenzy work through his issues and repair all the damage he's caused by being a part of the Union of Scorned Avatars.
SMG17 & SMG18
Statuses: Unknown
Avatar: Barry the Blook
Introduced here!
Their current statues are unknown due to the state their universe has been left in following Avatar Barry's departure.
SMG19 & SMG20
Statues: Actice
Avatar: Red the Angry Bird
Not much is known about them, but it's reasonable to assume they were glad to have their Avatar return home following the events of the Legacy Arc.
SMG21 (Kira Nadja) & SMG22
Statuses: Active
Avatar: Arle Nadja/Doppelganger Arle
SMG21/Kira Nadja is the second known SMG to not go by her assigned name (the other being Penta Knight). It's clear she prefers this one.
SMG23 & SMG24
Statuses: Active
Avatar: Laharl
It's pretty reasonable to assume that they do their best to help Laharl any understand the way he acts.
SMG25 & SMG26
Statuses: Unknown
Avatar: Lord Ramagog
Their current statuses are unknown due to Lord Ramagog's deserting of his universe.
SMG27 & SMG28
Statuses: Active
Avatar: Shantae
They probably tease her a fair bit about the time she sat on a freshly painted bench.
SMG29 & SMG30
Statuses: Active
Avatar: Ash Ketchum
Introduced here!
Their activation was rocky due to the interference of Avatar Barry, which was an attempt to stop the universe from coming online. However, it did end up happening, and SMG29 is actually trans.
SMG31 & SMG32
Statuses: Active
Avatar: Captain Olimar
SMG32 always somehow finds ways to incorporate the Pikmin into memes.
HMG1 ("Vee" Haltmann) & HMG2 ("Hex" Haltmann) (belongs to Duckapus)
Statuses: Active/Anamolies
Avatar: Elanore Haltmann
Introduced here!
They are False Guardians, as they were not made by the Guardian System, but instead Susie Haltmann. Originally intended to replace SMG3&4, they now live peacefully alongside them, even if some craziness is bound to happen.
SMG33 & SMG34 (belongs to Duckapus)
Statuses: Active
Avatars: Sally 13 and Cole
Introduced here!
Following Garyboy messing with the universe files, the two universes merged, and now the two SMGs work together. SMG33 is a recolor of Sally, and SMG34 is based on Cole.
SMG35 & SMG36
Statuses: Active
Avatar: Irene
Introduced here!
SMG35 was bold enough to sass a god for not being in the right realm when she first landed. SMG36 just about had a heart attack when she heard that.

Buddy Daddies & Music Part 2
After discovering that our antagonists have their own thematic instruments, I was inspired to do a rewatch of the whole show with an ear towards significant themes. I'll put the rest under a Read More due to some amount of spoilers for various episodes.
First off, I am devastated that I can't find the tracks to the soundtrack anywhere yet, otherwise I would link to the music I mean. For now you'll have to suffer through my descriptions.
So far, I've only been able to pinpoint one significant recurring theme, outside of basic stuff like the brassy jazz theme for action sequences. It's a soft, emotional theme, with the clarinet carrying the melody and the piano providing the accompaniment. It first pops up at the end of Episode 1 during the van ride back to Rei and Kazuki's apartment. I've taken to calling it "Miri's Family", as it only pops up during moments where one or more of our main trio is thinking about their family, or significant events have occurred that change the family. If the official soundtrack has a different name for this piece, well I haven't been able to find that yet.
"Miri's Family" plays at the end of Episode 1, like I mentioned earlier, from the van ride up through Rei's line "I can't have a cat, but you can have a kid?" and then tapers off to stop when they open the envelope with the pictures.
It pops up again in Episode 3, right after Rei decides that he is one of Miri's papas, and it plays through the "For three?" "For three." dialogue and them all heading home.
The next time it shows up is in Episode 5, when Miri is asking Kyutaro about her Papas' jobs. Interestingly enough, it doesn't start playing until Kyutaro is describing how terrible Kazuki is at being a comedian, and it stops right as Miri is confused about what an oil baron is.
It pops up again at the end of Episode 5, during Kazuki and Rei's conversation with Kyutaro, right as he is reminding them of the dangers of their jobs and ends right as he tells them they can't have any regrets. This time, we get a piano-only version of the theme, with the piano providing both the melody and accompaniment, rather than simply accompanying the clarinet. It's faint at times, and a little hard to hear.
In Episode 6, "Miri's Family" shows up at the end, when Miri is thanking her disguised!Papas for saving her friends from the pickpocket. It starts when Miri runs up and hugs disguised!Kazuki and ends when Rei says "Well, just do your best, I guess" to Kazuki.
It shows up again in Episode 8, during the back-and-forth between Rei's fight with his mentor and Miri and Kazuki discussing why Rei always looks sad. It begins right after Miri's line "Papa Rei's the same. He looked all snappy today, but he also looked sad," as the scene cuts back to Rei's fight. It ends when Miri asks when Rei is coming home. This one was also a piano-only rendition.
What I also found interesting were the times it didn't play. I expected it to turn up at the end of Episode 7, when Kazuki is gazing fondly at a sleeping Rei and Miri. It didn't show up at all in Episode 7, or in Episode 4, which surprised me. It also didn't play during the conversation in Episode 8 where Rei tells his mentor he also has something he wants to protect.
For the most part, "Miri's Family" shows up during moments where one or more of our main trio is contemplating their family, and also in moments that signal a big shift in dynamic, like Kazuki and Rei acquiring Miri and Rei accepting the title of "papa". "Miri's Family" is both a lighthearted and somber theme, which seems to fit the feel of these moments very well. There's almost something bittersweet about it too, much like how Kazuki and Rei giving Miri the childhood they never got is a bit of a bittersweet thing too. Overall I think it fits them very well and can't wait to see where it shows up in future episodes.
What I also found intriguing was the instrumentation. Up until the end of Episode 5, the clarinet carries the melody and is backed up by the piano. But in the conversation with Kyutaro at the end of Episode 5 and where it pops up in Episode 8, we get a piano-only rendition. Both of those are times when two-thirds of the family is separated from the family member they're thinking about. Up until Episode 8, I thought that the clarinet was Miri's thematic instrument, and that we'd get the piano rendition only when she wasn't present, but we got the piano rendition in Episode 8 despite Miri being there. Maybe we get the piano version when two of our main trio is worried about the other member?
I can't wait to see if any new recurring musical themes pop up, or if there are any I have missed that new episodes make obvious. If I've missed one you've noticed, feel free to yell at me in the comments.

One MidgeLenny x TSwift Fic Per Day
149. Karma
"I love this part,” Midge tells Trevor Noah as they sit at the desk. “My granddaughter taught me how to use YouTube, and she set it up so that I get a little notice on my phone whenever you post a new Between the Scenes.”
Trevor grins at that. “Well then by all means, hang out with me. Talk to the audience!” There’s uproarious applause from the crowd.
“You know how I do love an audience, Trevor,” she replies with a sly grin. At eighty-four, she may have slowed down a bit physically, but her wit has remained sharp.
“Well, I will get the ball rolling and then open up to a couple of audience members for questions,” the host says, turning to her. “I was fortunate enough to meet you and your late husband, Lenny Bruce - ” The audience interrupts him to applaud for Lenny, and Midge gives them a grateful smile. It’s been two years since he passed away, and she still misses him every day. “I met the two of you at an event for your memoir, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
“A fun night,” Midge remembers with a smile. “I’m still kvelling over the fact that millions of people wanted to read a bunch of stories from the life of an old Jewish woman.”
Trevor laughs a little at that. “And the thing I noticed was that...you did your duty of shaking hands and talking to the people who helped get your book out there, but you spent most of your time talking with my generation, the sort of newer set of comics.”
“Well you’re all just so funny!” Midge replies. “You keep me sharp. And...it’s very cool to see the sort of differences in everyone’s voices. Back in my day there were more black-and-white categories. You were a political comic or an impressionist or you had a character you portrayed, and as time has gone on, those lines have become blurred - almost nonexistent.
“And it’s interesting because - as someone who was coming up in the time of George Carlin and Carol Burnett and Mort Sahl and, of course, Lenny Bruce - I can very much see where the influences come from, and it’s very rewarding when I get to watch a female comic get on stage and talk about her dumpster fire of a life because when I started, women weren’t really allowed to do that.”
She gets a laugh out of the audience and Trevor for that one, and he adds, “I feel very grateful that, as a comedian, I am allowed to sort of talk about whatever I want. I don’t have to limit myself to one schtick.”
“Right,” Midge agrees. “You talk about politics, but you also do impressions and tell stories about taco trucks and your family. I can see influences from Richard Pryor and obviously Jon Stewart. And then there’s...a little hint of Lenny in you,” she tells him with a soft smile.
“And Lenny was a huge influence on Jon,” Trevor explains. “That whole genre of political comedy really influenced both of us.”
“He loved that. He’s always loved mentoring the younger set. That’s how we became friends, after all. He took an interest in my career. And critics over the years have accused him of doing it just to get me into bed, but he was mentoring other comics before I came along, and he continued doing it for the rest of his life. He loved going to little shithole - can I say that here? - shithole comedy clubs and watching these kids who are just starting out and giving them a little advice or a boost.”
Trevor keeps his eyes on her, but starts to turn to the audience. “Well, I could sit here and just talk to you for days, but I want to let the audience ask some questions, so...” Midge laughs a little as Trevor looks out and points to a young man on the right. “Do you have a question for Mrs. Maisel?”
The man, somewhere in his mid-twenties, asks, “What’s been your most rewarding experience in comedy?”
Midge looks back at her. “Well, I’d have to put meeting my husband at the top of the list,” she replies. “But to go back to what we were just discussing, I was on Chelsea Handler’s show a few years ago, and during one of the breaks, she told me about how, as a young, Jewish, female comic, she listened to my records, and how I was such an influence on her comedy. Because she does things in her act that are very similar to what I was doing back in the sixties,” she explains before shrugging. “And she can say fuck and period and pregnant without getting hauled off stage and thrown in a jail cell, so...I think the most rewarding thing is seeing doors open for funny young women that weren’t open in my day.”
Trevor looks to the other side of the audience. “We have time for one more question.” There’s a young woman on the opposite side, whose hand is raised and shaking excitedly, and he points to her. “What would you like to ask Mrs. Maisel?”
She stands up, and Midge sees she’s clutching a copy of her memoir and bouncing a little. “Hi, Mrs. Maisel. I’m such a huge fan,” she gushes.
“Oh, thank you, sweetie,” Midge replies with a smile. “You have excellent taste in books as well, I see.”
The woman giggles and blushes a little bit. “Um, what do you think is the key to your longevity in your career?"
“Just one second,” Midge says, holding up a finger. She gestures to one of the production assistants. “Could you bring her book over here?” She whispers. The assistant nods and heads over.
“If you didn’t know, I’m Jewish,” she explains, getting a laugh from the audience as she grins. “And in Judaism, there’s this concept of midah k'neged midah, which is very similar to what you may know as karma.”
The production assistant sets the book down in front of her. “Thank you,” she says as she sets her readers on her nose and starts to flip through her memoir, looking for a particular passage. “Basically, what goes around comes around. The good things you do bring good things back into your life, and the shit comes back to burn you.”
She finds the passage she was looking for and reads, “I remember standing there on the stage of Carnegie Hall, wearing a dress I had specifically chosen in hopes that it would land on the floor of a very blue room that night, and realizing how badly I had fucked up.
“I hadn’t just turned down a job. I had hurt someone who believed in me, who had stuck his neck out for me, and I couldn’t even be grateful for what he had done because I was so committed to the idea of saying whatever I wanted without consequence.
“As he stood there, his eyes red and teary, I realized that this wasn’t the first time I had hurt someone because of my inability to see past my own desires and experiences. Just six months prior, I had hurt my dear friend by getting on stage at the Apollo and telling jokes that not only hinted at something he had told me in confidence, but also put him in potential danger. I had hidden things from my family that could and would affect their lives. I had ended an engagement to a man in a letter without considering his feelings.
“It was a turning point in my life because I realized too late that there is a world outside of my bubble. That my actions have consequences, and while my spontaneity was my strength, it could also be my downfall.”
She steals a pen from Trevor and flips to the front of the book. “What is your name?” She asks the blonde woman who posed the question.
The young woman looks absolutely stunned. “Uh, it’s Veronica,” she answers.
“Veronica,” Midge repeats. “Veronica, my success has come from learning empathy. From becoming significantly more aware of the people around me. And from taking the time to lift up the people around me instead of tearing them down.
“I was fortunate enough to find someone who did that for me because - well, he loved me - but more importantly, he believed in me, believed in my talent. So I’ve taken what he gave me - as a comic,” she adds when there are some chuckles from the audience. “My god, Trevor, your audience has a filthy mind.”
“I think you brought out the best in them,” Trevor jokes.
It’s Midge’s turn to laugh then, and she scribbles a note in the front cover. “And I’ve made concerted efforts to pay it forward. When you’re kind to others, that kindness will be returned to you. Maybe not immediately, but eventually. And the key is to continue being kind regardless of what the world throws at you.”
The PA takes the book back to Veronica, who holds it tightly to her chest, grinning from ear to ear. “Alright, Trevor,” Midge says, turning back to the host. “You can have your show back now.”
The room laughs, and Trevor gestures to her. “Mrs. Maisel, everyone!”

DKC HEADCANONS PT. 1
Also using this opportunity to ramble. Sorry, couldn’t resist—
Swanky is the one who acts “human” the most out of the cast. He doesn’t know how to act ape-like (ex: climbing, foraging, or nest-building, etc). He wasn’t taught any of those skills when he was young, and now is reluctant to try any of those out.
Funky isn’t good with maintaining eye contact, that’s half of the reason why he wears shades. The other half is that his eyes are sensitive to bright lights.
DK sometimes like to wrestle and tackle Swanky and Funky out of affection. He mostly does this towards Swanky. He would do this to the other Kongs but he’s afraid of accidentally hurting them (they’re smaller).
Swanky and Lanky have a mentor-mentee dynamic. Lanky took Swanky’s advice and took it to the heart, leading him to be a beloved comedian on the island.
Chunky is reluctant to try new things out, he often seeks reassurance from the older Kongs (DK, Lanky, Funky, Swanky, Candy, etc) before proceeding.
Despite Cranky, well, being Cranky (ex: hitting the younger Kongs on the head with his cane), he holds good intentions. He merely wants the Kongs to strive to be better, and not fall in the path he fell when he was younger.
Shockingly, Cranky is a pacifist (I guess unshockingly when we remember his past). He will look for any solution, anything, to not resort to violence.
Wrinkly loves to pinch the younger Kongs’ cheeks like a grandma (she does it with both hands). Despite the fact that it’s painful, the younger Kongs endure it to make her happy.
Candy absolutely enjoys and loves music, she’s often seen wearing a pair of headphones connected to a Walkman. It’s rare to see her without it. The headphones also works as earmuffs as she’s sensitive to loud abrupt sounds.
Candy sees Funky as an “annoying younger brother” and often treats him as one. Basically like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Kongs’ fur somewhat acts like a cat’s. It flares up a bit when they’re angry, it becomes spiky when they’re startled, etc.
When they’re very distressed or enraged, they make animalistic sounds.
The Kongs mostly have a vegetarian diet.
I don’t know why I keep posting and thinking about DKC in the night ;0;, it keeps happening and I don’t know how to stop it. Regardless, I hope y’all enjoyed it. :)
