"I really don't want to supervise Zuko tonight." Sokka grumbled, pinching the bridge of his nose.
Ever since Zuko saved Aang and his friends from 'Combustion Man' or better known as 'Sparky Sparky Boom Man', nobody trusted him to sleep around them without supervision. Well, except (Y/N), but they thought she had some bias since he was fire nation.
Nobody had a single drop of respect for him. Even though he insisted that he, 'was good now', everyone believed he was a spy.
But nobody could blame them.
"I need my beauty sleep." Sokka mimicked a beauty guru as his hands framed his face. "The ladies appreciate a pretty boy."
Katara groaned, rolling her eyes. "It's your turn, Sokka." She crossed her arms, pursing her lips at him. "No one else is gonna-"
"I'll do it!" A voice quickly interrupted. Everyone turned to look at (Y/N), who was standing stiffly. She smiled awkwardly. She pinched at the hem of her pants, stepping forward. "I don't mind doing it.."
Sokka crossed his arms, raising a brow at (Y/N). Everyone was aware of the little 'crush' she had on Zuko. I mean, he was cute, he was angsty, and he was strong. Extremely short, but strong. She always took the chance to tease him.
"I mean, if you insist." Sokka walked away towards his tent, sighing softly in happiness. Rest was one of his most appreciated things in life - behind stuffing his face in food. Maybe it was because he liked the feeling of waking up in the morning, or the interesting dreams he had at night.
No one knew.
"Thanks, Sokka!" She said with a smile waving goodbye to him. "I-I mean, I'll do the job.."
As everyone headed off to their respective sleeping spots, (Y/N) listened to the quiet chirping of the crickets, looking up at the night sky as the stars glimmered. She considered whether or not she should g into Zuko's tent to check up on him (more like poke fun at him.)
While she ended an ear to the sound of the crackling flames coming from. the vampire, she heard the sound of shuffling coming from her left. (Y/N) glanced to the side, seeing Zuko climbing out from the flaps of his tent.
"Oh. Hi." He said awkwardly, holding his hand up in place of a wave. "What are you doing out here?" He questioned, wondering where Sokka was. Zuko was aware of the rotation for their watch party; Aang, Katara, Sokka, and then (Y/N). Toph didn't have the responsibility of watching Zuko since her feet were still injured from when he jumpscared him that night.
"Watching you." (Y/N) tried to play it cool, but a pool of desire filled her heart as she watched Zuko's dark hair fall in front of his amber eyes. He looked so pretty as the firelight shone on his pale skin. She started to grow pink under his gaze.
"Isn't it Sokka's turn?" Zuko stretched, his shirt lifting up to expose his stomach. (Y/N)'s eyes widened at the sight.
"Yeah, but he begged me to take his turn," She lied, rubbing the back of her neck. "he's awfully tired."
Zuko nodded. He began to walk over to the log (Y/N) was sat on. (Y/N) watched as he sat next to her, his pale fingers grazing the hard bark of the seat. It was extremely cold in the area, especially since they were in a semi-cave. After the failed invasion at the palace, they had begun to stay at the western air temple. The infrastructure was odd - upside building lining the roofs of the cave.
"I'm sure you won't mind hangin' out with me." She elbowed him, smirking. "Us being fire nation and all."
Zuko turned to look at her, a brown raised in confusion. "You're from the fire nation?" He asked, tilting his head. It was as if he was inspecting her. "You don't seem like it."
(Y/N) shrugged, glancing up at him. "Yeah. I mean, my family was banished when I was pretty young. But I'm still fire nation." She sighed, resting her chin on her hand, Her elbow dug into the skin of her knee, but she didn't mind. "Do you know Gender Jin?" She asked.
With a nod, Zuko said, "Yeah, why?"
Genera. Jin had been banished from the fire nation twelve years ago, whe Zuko was four. He had committed treason against Azulon, Zuko's grandfather, for having a child with a waterbender. Apparently, he was also accused of planning attacks on the fire nation with the northern water tribe during this time. It was never confirmed, but the speculation was brought up a whole lot.
"That's my Dad." (Y/N) said, sighing softly, Zuko let out a small 'oh', surprised at this.
"Are you-"
"The infamous forbidden child? Yep. Yes-sir-ee." (Y/N) interjected. She already knew what he was going to say. The word was passed around almost the whole world when it happened, since the fire nations grasp infiltrated every nation in some manner. She knew what her name was. She knew what people thought of her.
"The rumors of me being a firebender and a water bender aren't true." Zuko looked at her, surprised that she knew this. "I'm just a plain ole' firebender."
There was an awkward silence between the two. There was not much to say, at least off the top of their heads.
(Y/N) perked up, looking over at Zuko. "Do you think you could teach me some tricks?" She said excitedly. Zuko was caught of guard by this.
"Tricks? What do you mean?" He asked, wanting her to elaborate. He was looking for practice with a firebender lately, so this might be fun.
"Like, could you teach me?" (Y/N) looked away with an embarrassed face. Her father never told her firebending; he wanted her to live a normal life as a kid.
"You mean you don't know anything?" Zuko laughed in disbelief. "Anything at all?"
"Yeah.." (Y/N) grumbled, pursing her lips slightly. "I'm ashamed of it - I can admit it. But I wouldn't mind if you taught me some things." She wiggled her brows, smirking slightly as she glanced at him. Zuko flattened his lips.
"I mean, I don't have much to do." Zuko pushed off of the seat, leaning forward and standing up fully. He glanced down at (Y/N). He reached his hand out, offering it to her. "Come on."
...
They walked into a small clearing, the cold night wind blowing their hair back and forth. They had climbed above the cliff the western air temple hung from, where a large valley rested.
Zuko had removed the robe that hung over his clothes. His arms were exposed, small goosebumps lining his arms.
(Y/N)'s eyes graced his body, her face growing red from both the cold air and his body.
"Already undressing?" She teased, crossing her arms and grinning. "Take me out to dinner first."
Zuko glanced over to her, a frown appearing on his face. "W-what?" He said, shifting uncomfortably.
"I mean, I get that I'm the prettiest girl here - no offense to Katara." (Y/N) walked over, smirking. "but you barely know me Prince Zuko." She poked him on the chest jokingly. (Y/N) leaned on her legs her hip popping out.
Zuko huffed out a fiery breath (no pun intended), looking to the side. "Do you want to learn or not?"
(Y/N)'s eyes widened. She stepped back, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, yeah." She shook her arms nervously, stepping back and getting into a fighting stance.
"Fire bending is all about- what are you doing?" Zuko stopped mid sentence, looking at (Y/N).
"Uhm, getting into a stance?" She said awkwardly, looking to the ground.
"No, no. You're to open." Zuko stepped forward. He grabbed her wrists, pulling them down in front of her chest. "You're leaving your body open to hits." He walked behind her, putting his hands on her shoulders.
She shivered, the feeling of his fingers gracing her skin. (Y/N) leaned into the touch, his palms touching the lower part of her shoulders. "You opponents have the opportunity to knock you to the ground." Zuko placed his right foot on the inside of her legs. The toe of his shoe pressed against the heel of her foot, pushing it slightly.
"You want to be low.." He whispered into her neck, pushing her shoulders down so she was more level to the ground.
Was he doing this on purpose? (Y/N)'s heartbeat was audible in her ears, but she wasn't the only one who's blood was pumping from this interaction.
As she moved down her backside rubbed against Zuko's crotch lightly. He let out a small gasp, his eye twitching at the feeling.
(Y/N) smirked at the sound, realizing the affect she had on Zuko. What could she do with this? A lonely teenage boy? She was sure he wouldn't mind.
"Ope, sorry Zuko." She said slyly. She bent her knees even more, her ass pushing onto Zuko's growing erection.
Zuko shifted back uncomfortably, their contact breaking.
(Y/N) turned around, standing up fully. "Oh c'mon Zuko, i need you to show me how to do this." She smirked, her foot digging into the grass.
"I know what you're doing." Zuko said, his face growing red under the pale moonlight. His eyes scanned her, and unimpressed looked overcoming him.
"What am I doing?" She teased, a finger pressing onto Zuko's chest. "Tell me."
Zuko's face held a look of frustration. His eyes met hers, his eyebrows furrowing together. There was a hot tension between the two of them, healing the goosebumps on their skin from the cold night air.
The digit placed on his chest soon turned into (Y/N)'s entire hand. She took a step closer to him, causing Zuko to let out a shaky breath.
Even with her confidant pseudo, (Y/N)'s stomach was filled with a nervous sickness. She had no idea what she was doing - letting her desire lead her.
"You're trying to turn me on." Zuko muttered, keeping his voice low.
"It's working though, isn't it?" (Y/N) barked back.
Zuko's face flushed slightly, clearly caught off guard by your boldness. "I assure you, that wasn't my intention. Now if you'll excuse me..."
"No. Zuko, come on.." She said, a shaky breath huffing from my red nose. "Were so alike."
Zuko hesitated for a moment, his gaze flickering between you and the ground. "How so?"
"Were both refugees from a country that thrived on evil." Her arm traveled from his chest to his arm. (Y/N) watched as he flinched slightly. Her eyes made contact with his. "And you know what Sokka says about us behind our backs."
Zuko swallowed hard, his heart racing as he felt your touch. He knew what Sokka thought of them - that they were both damaged goods from a twisted world. Despite the danger and uncertainty, there was something undeniably compelling about this connection.
"I like you Zuko." She said, smiling softly. Her seductive shell cracked, shower her sweetness hidden inside.
Zuko looked into her eyes, feeling a familiar pain in his heart. Here was someone else who knew what it was like to be an outcast, to carry the burden of a nation's sins. "I like you too," he whispered, his voice barely audible.
"I trust you, too." She sighed, squeezing his arm gently. "They didn't trust me either at first."
Zuko's heart skipped a beat at her words. Trust was a rare and precious thing in their world, where betrayal lurked around every corner. But she was offering it to him freely, without judgment or fear. "Thank you," he breathed out softly.
She leaned forward, placing a soft peck on Zuko's lips. A warm feeling flooded through their bodies, the world around them feeling almost unrecognizable as they sat in the moment.
Zuko froze for a moment, shocked by the unexpected kiss. But as he felt her lips on his, he found himself responding, leaning in to deepen the kiss. The warmth spread through him, filling the cold void that had been there for so long.
She grabbed his face, bringing him down to kiss Zuko deeply. (Y/N) let out a huff from her nose, letting her fingers comb through Zuko's dark hair.
Zuko's hands found their way to her waist, pulling (Y/N) closer as he kissed her back with all the pent-up longing and desire that had been building inside him for so long.
As the kiss deepened, Zuko felt a fire ignite within him, burning away the coldness and isolation that had defined his life for so long. He wrapped his arms around (Y/N), pulling her closer still as he explored her mouth with his tongue, tasting her sweetness.
As she broke away from the kiss, their breaths mingled in the air between them. Zuko felt his heart racing, a wild and unfamiliar sensation.
Zuko looked into her eyes, seeing a reflection of his own turmoil and desire. He couldn't believe what was happening, but he didn't want it to stop. His hands roamed down her back, pulling her even closer as he whispered, "I need you."
"Show me." She whispered, leaning up to kiss him again.
Zuko dragged her onto the grass with him, never breaking the kiss.
Zuko pulled her onto his lap, cradling her body against his as he deepened the kiss once more. His hands trailed down (Y/N)'s sides, pushing up her shirt to reveal her soft skin beneath.
Feeling emboldened by her invitation and his own burning need, Zuko slid his hands underneath her shirt, tracing circles on her bare back. His lips moved hungrily against hers as he lost himself in the sensation of her skin against his fingertips.
Zuko's hands continued their exploration, moving lower to grasp her hips as he pulled her even closer. He could feel the heat between her legs, and it fueled his desire even more.
With a groan, Zuko slipped his hand beneath her shorts, feeling the softness of her thighs and the wetness between them. He couldn't believe how much he wanted her, how badly he needed to be inside (Y/N).
"Shit, Zuko.." She said between heated kisses, fingers pulling at his soft hair.
Zuko growled against her lips as he continued to touch her, his other hand sliding up (Y/N)'s leg to knead at her ass cheek. He could feel himself growing hard against her leg and he knew he had to have her soon.
"This isn't how I expected this night to go." She played with Zuko, his lips connecting with the soft skin of her neck.
Zuko chuckled breathlessly, his lips trailing down her neck to nibble at her collarbone. "Neither did I," he admitted, his voice husky with desire.
"Is this how you practice back home?" (Y/N) said, her feet digging in the dirt behind Zuko.
Zuko laughed softly against her skin. "No," he replied, his voice still rough with lust. "But I think I'd like to make it a regular practice here."
(Y/N) moaned slightly when Zuko's hips bucked into hers. "Ill watch over you more often then."
Zuko's eyes darkened with desire as he heard her words, and he couldn't resist bucking his hips against hers a little harder. "I'd like that," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
As she pulled back a little, Zuko took the opportunity to stand up, his hands sliding up her back to grip your shoulders. He looked down at her with an intense gaze, his eyes full of the burning passion that had overtaken him. "Take me to your bed,"
"We can't. We'll wake the others." She smirked, grabbing onto Zuko's wrist.
A growl rumbled in Zuko's chest at the reminder of their surroundings. But he knew she was right. Reluctantly, he nodded. "Then we'll make do with this," he said, reaching down to scoop (Y/N) up in his arms.
Zuko's heart was racing as he carried you deep into the nearby forest, away from the edge of the cliff. "To a quiet spot," he replied, his voice low and gravelly with desire. "A place where we can be even more alone."
He came to a small clearing where the trees thinned out, revealing a bed of soft moss and leaves. Gently, he lowered (Y/N) down onto it, his hands lingering on her hips for a moment before he joined her, pressing his body against hers.
(Y/N) pulled down her shorts and underwear, the cold hair hitting her exposed sex.
"Just get on with it, Zuko." She groaned, rolling her eyes.
Zuko chuckled softly against your lips before pulling back slightly to give you a teasing grin. "Always so impatient," he teased as he slowly unbuttoned his pants, sliding down his pants along with his boxers. He sprang free, a bead of pre-cum on his tip.
"Spirits.." She whispered at the sight of him, how he was throbbing at the sight of her.
Zuko's gaze locked onto yours as he positioned himself between her legs, his hard length rubbing against her slick entrance. "You ready for me?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
"You tell me."
With a groan, Zuko pushed forward, slowly entering (Y/N). Her tight heat enveloped him, and he fought the urge to slam all the way inside. Instead, he began to move in and out of her slowly, enjoying the sensation of being joined with her.
(Y/N)'s hands found their way to his chest, and she leaned into him, moaning softly. The feeling of being filled by him was indescribable, and as he picked up speed, driving deeper inside her with each thrust, she felt herself getting closer to the edge.
She could feel Zuko's muscles tensing as he neared his climax, his thrusts becoming more erratic and forceful. His other hand found its way to her clit, massaging it gently as he continued to pound into her. "I'm close."
"Already?" She teased, trying to maintain a sarcastic demeaner as she let out erratic moans.
With a chuckle, Zuko leaned down to kiss her again as he pulled almost all the way out of her before slamming back in. "You like that?" he asked breathlessly.
She screamed, her nails scratching at Zuko's back until white marks appeared - lighter than his skin.
Feeling her nails dig into his skin, Zuko lost control completely. With a primal growl, he pushed her down onto the ground and continued to pound into her, taking what he wanted with no regard for her comfort or pleasure.
He was like a rabid animal, like this was the thing he needed to live.
Her screams of pleasure and pain echoed through the forest as Zuko continued to take her roughly, losing himself in the sensation of being inside her. He could feel his release building, and he knew he wouldn't be able to hold out much longer.
"Zuko!" She clenched around him, being pulled over the edge as she shook. Her orgasm washed over her, (Y/N)'s eyes clenching tightly.
Feeling her walls clenching around him, Zuko let out a guttural moan as he emptied himself inside her. His thrusts became erratic and forceful, his body shaking with the intensity of his orgasm.
Finally, Zuko's movements slowed down, and he collapsed beside her, panting heavily. His heartbeat slowly returned to normal as he nuzzled into her neck, still inside her. "That was... intense," he whispered against her skin.
"Ya think?" Her chest rose up and down as she still huffed. (Y/N) tried to catch her breath, but she was sweating from the intensity.
Zuko chuckled softly, feeling his cock twitch inside her. "I think," he said with a smirk. After a few moments, he pulled out of her and rolled onto his side, still panting heavily. "So... how do you feel?"
(Y/N) faked a deep thought for a moment, looking away from him. "Eh. It was fine." She smirked at him, causing Zuko to roll his eyes.
"So.. you were scratching at my back because you hated it so much?" He played, kissing her neck softly.
"For sure." She sighed, playing with his hair.
The two teens lay there, panting heavily as the moonlight illuminated their skin. Their bodies were tangled but not in a hurry to separate. Despite the awkwardness of the situation, their need for each other overruled everything. They could return in the morning, nobody would notice - right?

To His Royal Highness The Prince,
I have arrived at the Academy safely. Ty Lee and I were given leave from classes today, to allow us to acclimate to the environment of the school, but tomorrow, we will join the others in our year for lessons. I promise that I will work hard, so that Your Highnessâs good name is not sullied by poor performance on my part.
If it does not trouble Your Highness greatly, and if it is not presumptuous of me to make a request like this, please feed Bian a treat when she reaches the palace. She is working hard, too.
Ever Your Highnessâs humble and obedient servant,
Ursa
P.S. Regretfully, I must report that I have still regained nothing in the way of my memories.
The messenger hawk that Prince Zuko had given you was a beautiful animal, almost draconian in appearance, with eyes like amber and a queenly crest of russet feathers. She had an enormous wingspan and talons so large that if you handed her a scroll, she would be able to take it between them and then fly away without waiting for you to strap it to her back.
âWoah, so pretty!â Ty Lee said as the Royal Falconer wheeled the caged bird into your room, vocalizing your exact thoughts at seeing the magnificent hawk. âIâve never seen one so big.â
âPrettyâs one word for it,â the falconer said, shaking his head. âSheâs likely the finest bird Agniâs ever seen. Actually, she was meant to be a coronation gift for Prince Zuko, but he came to the aviary the other day and told me to give her to you.â
You were so enraptured by the hawk that you almost did not notice what the man had said, but when his words registered, you immediately straightened your back and gave him an incredulous look.
âThis bird was meant to be the princeâs?â you said.
âShe was, but like I said, sheâs yours now,â the falconer said. âBy order of that very prince himself.â
You bit your tongue, feeling equal parts embarrassed and guilty about the gift. Although you knew he was doing it for his own reasons, you still thought it was strange for Prince Zuko to be paying so much attention to you. Even if he had saved you, what cause was there to give you such a grand bird? A normal one wouldâve been fine. A smaller, more average messenger hawk was probably more fitting for who you were, so why instead was the finest bird Agni had ever seen sitting before you?
âDoes she have a name?â you said.
âWe donât name the hawks,â the falconer said. âYouâre her owner now, though, so if you want to, you can.â
You thought about it for a second. âBian.â
The falconer wrinkled his nose, giving Bian a look that she ignored entirely, too busy preening her feathers to notice. You waited for him to say something, anything, but it took him a while before he did.
âItâs an interesting name,â he said.
âIs something wrong with it?â you said. âI donât know why I chose it. I can change it, if youâd like.â
âItâs not my place to be demanding you change your own hawkâs name,â he said, bowing at you.
âWait,â you said. âBefore you leave â must I keep her caged all of the time?â
âItâs not really common for anyone to do otherwise,â the falconer said. âBut I suppose she wonât go anywhere unless you tell her to, so itâs fine if you let her out.â
Although he was obviously hinting that you should not do it, you leaned over and unlatched the door to Bianâs cage. You werenât sure why, but something about seeing her trapped like that made you feel claustrophobic yourself, like the metal bars were encroaching on your neck, like it was your flight which was restricted.
Bian did not move for a bit, and then hesitantly, she peeked her head out of the door. When she realized that she was free, that the door was open, she flapped her wings, and with a great gust of wind, she took off and perched on your windowsill.
âThey should know how to take care of her at the school, since most students bring their own messenger hawks, so you wonât have to worry about her there,â the falconer said. âAnd if you ever come to the palace again, you can leave her with me.â
âAs you say, sir,â you said. âI donât know enough about messenger hawks and their care or keeping, so I will defer to your expertise when it comes down to it.â
âGood,â he said. âHave a nice day, Miss Ursa.â
âAnd you as well,â you said, waving at him before racing to the windowsill to admire the roosting Bian. She peered at you suspiciously, but when you raised your fingers and rested them on the space between her eyes, she did not so much as snap her beak at you.
âBe careful!â Ty Lee said. âMessenger hawks usually arenât that friendly. Theyâre a postal service, not pets.â
âItâs alright,â you said, stroking Bianâs head, smiling as she closed her eyes and crooned at you. âI think sheâs different. Well, at least, I donât think sheâll bite me or anything like that. Sheâs nice.â
âIf you say so,â Ty Lee said. âThough I think I will stay far away, if thatâs okay with you.â
âThatâs your prerogative,â you said. âBut Iâm not putting her back in that cage, so donât expect that.â
âSure, I wonât! Anyways, sheâll live in the schoolâs aviary while weâre there, so itâs not a big deal,â she said.
âOh, true,â you said. âDo you think theyâll let me visit her still?â
âThey wouldnât stop you. How else would you send letters? Although, I canât really understand why Zuko even gave you a hawk in the first place. Who are you going to be writing to?â she said, picking her bag in one hand and yours in the other.
âI think he wanted me to write to him,â you said, whistling at Bian, who whistled back before she realized you were actually calling her, at which she rustled herself alert. âBian, do you know where the Royal Fire Academy is? Thatâs where weâre going. You can either come with us or fly there on your own.â
Bian cocked her head before diving back into her cage, landing on the perch and tucking her head under her wing. You glanced at Ty Lee, who shrugged, obviously as confused as you were.
âI guess I wonât close the door, but if she wants to be in there of her own volition, then I canât take the decision from her,â you said.
âAt least itâll be easier to take her to the academy,â Ty Lee said. âSpeaking of which, we should hurry up and go â I think the carriage driver is waiting for us.â
The carriage was covered in gold and brandished with the emblem of the Fire Nation. A dragon moose was in the harness, dozing off, its ears drooping lazily as it napped. The driver himself was in a similar state, resting his chin in his hands, his hat low over his head to protect him from the sun.
âSorry weâre so late!â Ty Lee chirped at him. He awoke in a flurry of flailing limbs, looking around wildly before letting out a deep breath when he noticed that it was just you and Ty Lee. âThe falconer came to give Ursa a messenger hawk, so that took a bit of time, but weâre here now!â
âItâs not an issue,â the driver said, patting the dragon moose on the rump and swinging off his bench, taking the bags from Ty Leeâs hands. She relinquished them easily, watching as he put them under your seats in the carriage, and then she turned to you.
âGive him Bianâs cage, so that he can put her in there as well,â she said.
âHe wonât put her under the seat, right?â you fretted, gripping the bars of the open cage.
âOf course not, silly! Heâll just put her on the carriage floor or something, and weâll have to sit around her,â she said.
âOkay, if you say so,â you said. âSir Driver, please take the utmost of care with Bian when you put her away.â
âYou donât have to be that formal with him,â Ty Lee whispered to you as the driver gave you a strange look before grabbing Bianâs cage, though he did gentle his movements when you frowned at how rough he was being. âHeâs just a driver.â
âSorry,â you whispered back. âI would just feel bad if I didnât address him politely.â
âTheyâre used to it,â she said, leaping into the carriage once the driver had left and extending her hand out to you to help you in. You grabbed onto it and let her pull you in beside her. Bian squawked indignantly when you narrowly avoided kicking her cage over, and you muttered an apology to her as you sat across from Ty Lee, folding your hands in your lap and crossing your legs at the ankles.
âIs the academy far from here?â you said.
âNot by much. Itâs a quick journey, since itâs inside of the volcano as well,â she said.
âVolcano?â you said.
âOh, sorry, I forgot you wouldnât have known much about that! The Fire Nationâs capital is inside of a dormant volcano, but of course, the entire city isnât actually located in the main crater. Only the most high-status dwellings and government buildings are here; everything else is on the sides of the volcano, just because there isnât enough space for them here,â she said.
âThe Royal Fire Academy is included in that?â you said.
âItâs where all the children of the Fire Nation elite go to school,â she said. âNaturally, itâd be in here, too!â
âAh, thatâs sensible,â you said, for you hadnât thought that through until she had mentioned it. In fairness, you also hadnât known that the inner circle of the Fire Nation was located inside the crater of a dormant volcano, but then again, what could be a greater representation of the nationâs pride than the subjugation of natureâs own version of fire?
âItâs a very beautiful building,â Ty Lee said. âFrom what I remember, anyways. Nothingâs as beautiful as the palace, but the academy comes close. And the groundsâŠyouâll love them, Ursa! Even though I didnât like my time there that much, I still have some good memories of just how amazing the gardens were. I canât wait to show you around!â
âI canât wait to see everything,â you said. âIs there a library?â
âDuh,â Ty Lee said. âItâs a school. Of course thereâs a library. Do you like reading or something?â
âI donât know. I canât remember, but Iâm sure that Iâll be much behind everyone else, so Iâll probably need to do a lot of catching up so that I can still get good marks. A library is my best bet at finding the information I need,â you said.
âYouâre so studious,â Ty Lee said. âIâve always just thought to myself that as long as I pass, itâs fine!â
âThe prince has gone through so much effort to ensure my acceptance in the academy,â you said. âThe least I can do for him is prove that it wasnât a waste.â
Ty Lee beamed at you. âYouâre amazing! I bet heâll be really grateful that youâre so dedicated.â
âItâs good to hear that,â you said. âBesides, maybe itâll help jog my memory if I read about history and science and other such things. According to Prince Zuko, I was a soldier before he found me, but I doubt he knows anything about my hobbies or preferences, so thereâs no telling what might spark something in my mind.â
This was the true reason. Though it wasnât a lie to say that you wanted to make the prince happy, your own identity was more important to you. The memories of the girl named Ursa, who she had been, who she had lovedâŠyou wanted to know all of it. You wanted to know who you were, not in anyone elseâs words but in your own.
Ty Lee did not seem to judge you. She only smiled sadly before turning to look out the window, an obvious sign that the conversation was over.
She had been right; the journey to the academy did not take much longer than the duration of your conversation. You were there before you knew it, before you were really prepared for what that meant, but it was irrelevant. Your personal feelings on the matter werenât important, because this was where you would now spend your time. You were going to be a proper Fire Nation girl, a lady, one who could rejoin society as someone that even a prince might be proud of.
Bian was carted off to the academyâs aviary before you could even think to wish her farewell, but beyond promising yourself you would visit her later, there was nothing you could do about it. That was because a tall, stately woman before you was now commanding all of your attention, her pinched face souring when she saw your plain clothes and meager possessions.
âSo you are the Ursa that the prince insisted attend my school,â the woman, who mustâve been the Headmistress, said. âAnd here we have the infamous dropout of the academy, Ty Lee.â
Something about the Headmistress seemed to cow even the perpetually sunny Ty Lee, for she only ducked her head and folded her hands behind her back in deference.
âYes, Headmistress,â she said. Following her example, you hoped you were doing it correctly.
âYes, Headmistress,â you said.
âYou two are probably the most sorry students Iâve seen in all my years at this institution,â she said. âYouâre lucky that you are who you are and that you know who you know. If it werenât for the royal familyâs interference, then mark my words: you would not be standing here now. Neither of you.â
âThank you, Headmistress,â Ty Lee said.
âThank you, Headmistress,â you echoed.
âLuckily, two of our students still donât have roommates, so thereâs at least space for you both to stay. For as long as you can bear to, anyways,â the Headmistress said, the latter part of her statement pointed at Ty Lee, who did not even argue. âTy Lee, you will room with Kaho, and Ursa, you will be with Jia-Li.â
You had been hoping that you would get to stay with Ty Lee, but there was only so much that you could expect to go your way. Although you had no idea who Jia-Li was, you hoped that she would at least be friendly enough that you could live with her without much complaint.
Ty Lee did not seem optimistic about the proposition of rooming with Kaho. Her sweet face crumpled, but she did not speak up. You wondered what kind of person Kaho could be, if even Ty Lee did not want to live with her.
âYes, Headmistress,â you said, speaking for the both of you when it became evident that Ty Lee was far too distressed to say anything.
âI will show you to your rooms. You arrived too late to attend todayâs classes, so you will be excused, but I expect the both of you to be present tomorrow. At this school, education is our priority, and special admission or not, no one is exempt from this,â the Headmistress said.
âOf course, Headmistress,â you said once again. âI am eager to begin learning.â
She glanced at you out of the corner of her eye before turning away. âGood. Enthusiasm is the first step to success. Weâll see; maybe we can make something halfway respectable out of you after all.â
The room you were to share with Jia-Li had a heavy, plain door, though two placards hung on it, the left emblazoned with the characters of your name, the right with hers. The Headmistress did not even wait for you to enter before marching off with Ty Lee, presumably to where Kahoâs room was.
You opened the door gingerly, cringing back preemptively in case Jia-Li was of an easily startled temperament. When there was no blast of fire in your direction, you stepped in, admiring the small room and getting your first glance at your new roommate.
She had long, silky hair tied in a ponytail with a red ribbon, and her eyes, which were trained on a scroll, were the same color as volcano-glass. The bed on the left of the room was clearly hers, as its blankets were messy instead of neatly made, and she was sitting at the desk by its foot. There were paintings hung on her side of the room, but the side that mustâve been yours was noticeably bare, likely in preparation for your arrival.
âAre you Jia-Li?â you said when she did not look up. She dropped the scroll in her hands and sprang to her feet, her cheeks flushed and her palms clasped together in apology.
âYes, I am! Iâm sorry, I didnât notice you coming in. Are you Ursa?â she said. You wanted to say no, because you still didnât feel very much like that was who you were, but you just nodded your head.
âItâs nice to meet you. I think weâre going to be roommates?â you said.
âYes, they brought your things up just now. Itâs nice to meet you, too! My last roommate left after losing an Agni Kai, so Iâve been living on my own for a bit. Itâll be nice to have someone here with me again,â she said.
âDo you get kicked out if you lose an Agni Kai?â you said.
âNo?â Jia-Li said. âItâs just a dishonorable thing. She got so embarrassed she had to leave, but itâs not like anyone made her go. Actually, she lost to Kaho, so no one was even judging her for losing. Kahoâs only lost an Agni Kai once, and that was to Princess Azula, so it doesnât even count.â
There it was again: Princess Azula. She mustâve been Prince Zukoâs sister, but everyone said her name differently. Almost reverently, though they never said the princeâs name like that. It was strange. You werenât sure if you ever wanted to meet the princess, if she inspired this kind of terror in people.
âSorry,â you said. âI probably shouldâve known that. Actually, I probably did know that, but â Iâm not sure if they told you or anything, but I donât have any memories.â
Jia-Li blinked. âThey didnât mention it, but thatâs good to know. Who are you the daughter of? They must be pretty distraught that youâre like this.â
âI donât know. Iâm not the daughter of anyone,â you said. âIf I have parents or siblings or a family, they are lost somewhere in my mind, along with everything else I cannot recall.â
âNot the daughter of anyone? Then howâd you end up in the academy? Itâs infamous for being selective and only open to the children of the nobility,â Jia-Li said. It didnât seem like she was upset or scandalized by the fact that you, her new roommate, were just some ordinary girl â she just appeared to be confused.
âActually, I was found by Prince Zuko while injured and taken to the palace to be healed,â you said. âNow that I am in a somewhat better shape, he arranged for me to attend the academy so that I can rejoin Fire Nation society in a proper way and understand what kind of world I am living in.â
Jia-Liâs jaw dropped. âYouâre the one here on the royal familyâs scholarship?â
âI didnât know that was a well-known thingâŠâ you said, rubbing the back of your neck sheepishly, stepping into the room fully. Jia-Liâs face lit up as you opened the bags Mai had packed for you and began to shake out your things to set them up in the room.
âKahoâs been furious since she heard about it!â she said. âSheâs always tried to gain favor from the royal family and failed, so to hear that a girl is coming to the academy that has the very thing she lacks has had her in knots.â
The name Kaho was familiar to you, and not just because Jia-Li had mentioned her earlier. You tried to think about where you might know her from, and then you realized that she was Ty Leeâs roommate, the one that she had been upset about.
âIs she someone dangerous?â you said.
âDepends. Are you talented with bending?â Jia-Li said.
âIâm not even a bender,â you said. Jia-Li winced.
âThen yes, sheâs dangerous,â she said. âIf I were you, Iâd steer clear of her.â
âAre you a Firebender?â you said. Jia-Li smiled, holding out her palm, where a small flame blossomed.
âIâm passable enough. Certainly, Iâm no prodigy, but I can do most of the intermediate forms, and Iâm starting to try some of the more advanced ones, too,â she said. âThat, combined with my brotherâs friendship with Kahoâs, is enough for her to mostly leave me alone.â
âIâll do my best to avoid her,â you said. âThough I donât even know who she is, so itâll be difficult.â
âIâll look out for you,â Jia-Li promised. âActually, my best advice would be to avoid people you donât know in general. Most girls here arenât that nice.â
âBut I only know you and Ty Lee,â you said. Jia-Li nodded.
âThatâs enough. Two friends is more than most people have, and itâs better to have two actual friends than ten false ones,â she said.
âHow do I know that youâre an actual friend?â you said before clapping your hand over your mouth. âIâm sorry. I donât know why I said that.â
She laughed. âItâs okay. Thatâs a good question; one whose answer you will have to determine for yourself. However, whether you think Iâm a true friend or not, youâll have to live with me, so for both our sakes, I hope you come to a more positive conclusion. In the meantime, though, I have to go to afternoon lessons. Iâm assuming youâve been excused from them?â
âYes, I have been,â you said. âIâm to start with classes tomorrow.â
Jia-Li made a face. âLucky. You should try to get some rest while you can.â
âI already canât. I need to spend some time reviewing so that Iâm prepared for class tomorrow. Iâm already starting off at a disadvantage; I have to do what I can to close the gap between me and everyone else, so that my performance does not reflect poorly on the prince,â you said.
Jia-Li looked impressed. âIâll leave you to it, then. If you ever need help with your homework or studying or anything, let me know. Iâm not the top student at the academy or anything, but my grades are decent.â
âWhoâs the top student?â you said. Jia-Li gave you a knowing look.
âIt was Princess Azula, before she left, and ever since, itâs been Kaho,â she said.
âNot exactly a person I should be asking for tutoring, then,â you said in defeat.
âNot exactly,â Jia-Li agreed. âAnyways, see you tonight!â
âTonight? Is something happening?â you said.
âYeah,â she said. âWeâre sleeping. In the same room. As we will be, until the end of the term.â
âOh, right. I forgot,â you said. Jia-Li smiled, patting you on the shoulder as she walked out.
âBye, Ursa,â she said.
Once your things were unpacked, you thought about trying to find Ty Lee, but Jia-Liâs warning about Kaho still rang in your head, and considering Kaho was Ty Leeâs roommate, it would probably be best if you avoided that area overall. Besides, you didnât know where their room was, so even if you werenât afraid of meeting Kaho, you wouldnât be able to find Ty Lee anyways.
You were just about sitting down to write a letter to Prince Zuko, telling him about your first day, when someone burst into your room. It wasnât Jia-Li â you didnât think she possessed that much energy â but it was still someone familiar to you: Ty Lee.
âYou mustâve read my mind,â you said. âI was thinking about how Iâd like to meet you.â
âUrsa, things are just horrid! My roommate is Kaho, and sheâs just like I remember her being!â Ty Lee wailed, throwing herself into your arms. You barely had the self-possession or advance warning to catch her, and then the only thing you could do was awkwardly pat her on the back, looking around and wishing there was someone else here to help.
âDo you know Kaho from before you left the academy?â you said.
âDo I ever,â Ty Lee muttered. âSheâs the reason Iâm even friends with Azula.â
âHow does that work?â you said.
âSheâs insane, thatâs how,â Ty Lee said. âKaho, I mean. She was jealous of how much attention the boys at the Royal Fire Academy for Boys were giving me, so she challenged me to an Agni Kai! Mind you, Iâm not even a Firebender.â
âI thought you could only participate in an Agni Kai if you were one, though,â you said.
âYes, thatâs right. She knows that, too. It doesnât stop her from going around and calling one for at any inconvenience, no matter her opponentâs bending status. The thing is, technically, nonbenders are allowed to call someone else â namely, a Firebender â to represent them in the match,â Ty Lee said.
âIs it common to do that?â you said.
âItâs not really a rule thatâs put into practice often, as most people wouldnât challenge a nonbender to an Agni Kai â excepting Kaho, of course. Anyways, Kaho was the best Firebender in the academy, so no one dared to stand against her, even with that rule in place; no one, that is, but Azula.
âShe agreed to be my proxy, though I think thatâs just because she was annoyed with how Kaho liked to lord her prowess over everyone. Of course, she won, because sheâs the most talented Firebender in the world, and ever since then, sheâs been my friend,â Ty Lee finished.
âThatâs great,â you said. âThough Iâd expect it doesnât endear you to Kaho any.â
âNot at all!â Ty Lee said. âAnd now youâre telling me I have to live with her? The Headmistress did this on purpose!â
âHow can you know that? Kaho and Jia-Li were probably the only ones needing roommates. It was either me or you,â you said, leaving out the fact that you were secretly pleased that it was her and not you.
âWhy didnât she just make those two stay together and let us be roommates?â Ty Lee said. âI mean, really! Kaho leaves Jia-Li alone, something about their brothers being friends, I think, so they wouldâve been fine as a pair, and of course we wouldâve had so much fun together. But no. I swear, the Headmistress is punishing me!â
âWhat for? We just got here,â you said. She gave you a dull look.
âWell, I mean, I did drop out and run away to join the circus, you knowâŠâ she said. âIt wasnât the best look for the academy, thatâs for sure. She definitely hates me for it.â
âThatâs true,â you said. âYou should just spend as much time as possible in my room.â
âSure thing!â she said, like she had been planning on doing that anyways but was pleased to have an official invitation.
âI hope Jia-Li doesnât mind you being here too much. Did you happen to know her, too?â you said.
âNot that well,â Ty Lee said, tapping her chin in thought. âBut I think she was nice. I canât seem to remember anything about her that particularly stood out, which could be good or bad, depending on how you look at it.â
âHm,â you said. âShe did seem to say that she was pretty mediocre all around, so it checks out.â
âSounds about right! But forget about our disappointing roommates. Do you know what time it is?â she said, raising her pointer fingers.
âI still donât understand why itâs that time, but yes, I do know what youâre about to do,â you said.
It was something like a ritual for you two, now. Every day, without fail, Ty Lee would jab you with her pointer fingers, always causing your knees to feel weak and your pulse to grow shallow for a moment. You always asked her what she was doing, but she refused to elaborate, promising that sheâd tell you one day.
Not today. Not tomorrow. But one day.
To my dear Ursa,
You donât have to follow such strict protocols and rules of etiquette when you write to me. I know that I am a prince, but in truth I rarely ever feel like one, so it is strange for me when you act as if I am royalty. You may pity me for saying it, but since I know you so well am your benefactor, I will disclose that the habits of my banishment have yet to fade. And in those days, I was never referred to by such titles, so please stop. It is especially strange to hear you calling me such things.
I am glad that you were given time to settle in. Mai told me she was not sure that the two of you would be afforded such grace, but we are both pleased to hear that you were. I hope that your lessons go well, and that your classmates are kind and helpful. I also hope that, if you cannot have Ty Lee as your roommate, you get someone who is friendly to you.
You neednât fret about doing well in your classes. I am confident you will, and that you will uphold my good name if I even still have one. Worry only for yourself. Try to avoid trouble, if at all possible, but write to me if it finds you anyways. I will do what I can to help you. I will always do what I can to help you.
I gave Bian a treat, as you asked. She was happy. I give you leave to make requests of me freely. It is not a problem for me to oblige you.
Yours,Â
Zuko
P.S. I am sorry to hear that you still remember nothing. Please write to me if that changes.
P.P.S. Do not sign your letters off like that again. You are not my servant.
