And then he grew up without them. He didn't know that what they meant was that they'll never come back again. Imagine him that day, that week, that month, that year, and years later thinking "why aren't they coming back? Where are they?" And then growing up knowing that he's all alone and accepting the fact that they left him or, you know, since Bergens were attacking, he probably assumed some of them were killed too. Wow.

tfone au where OP is created as the last of the primes but way after them, a sparkling born at what were thought to be the last days of the war against the quintessons, the beginning of a new generation of peace after eons of war. a child meant to be loved and raised knowing nothing of war nor sacrifice.

he's kept mostly out of the spotlight by his siblings, who don't wish to expose him to everyone's optics so young, and want to wait until the war is done and over to properly introduce him to their people.

except of course the primes are betrayed and murdered by sentinel, the war is lost and everyone who knows and cared for the truth is either banished or outright killed in order to suppress it.

and the high guard, the ones the primes trusted the most, the ones that were supposed to protect them, the ones who failed in their most important duty, have to make a choice. to take the last prime, their last hope, with them to the surface, a hostile environment where there's little to no supplies and where they'll be hunted down by both sentinel and the quintessons as the biggest threat to their regimen.

or hide him in plain sight. place him where sentinel won't think to look for him. one more sparkling among many. and hope it will be enough to keep him alive. pray to primus that he'll protect his last child long enough for them to come back for him when it's safer (even if most of them have already lost their faith on him when he allowed the rest of his children to be massacred like that)

they almost lose their resolve when they realize they will have to take the little one's cog away in order to make him blend in with the rest of the newborns (and oh do they burn with murderous intent when they see what sentinel has done to their people but it's not the time yet-) but in the end they decide an impaired little prime is better than a dead one.

and so in the chaos of thirteen dead primes and a sudden energon crisis, a little sparkling who very few mechs really knew about and even fewer had seen completely vanishes. and in the depths of iacon a mech in charge of a new batch of newborns scratches their helm in confusion as they realize they must have miscounted the first time.

optimus prime is quietly erased from any official records by sentinel, written off as dead when they find a sparkling's frame mangled beyond recognition after an attack on the base of those rebels that insist on being a thorn on his side. killing the sparkling hadn't been precisely in his plans, he probably could've found some use for it after all, but he's not particularly upset about it either.

and orion pax grows up with an ache on his spark that tells him he's missing something far more important than a t-cog and dreams of gentle and loving hands, cradling him against the frames of mechs he cannot recall the faces of.

Mokona is just uncomplicatedly happy about this but OH that bottom panel really gets me. Kurogane in complete shock, as if not quite daring to actually believe it yet. Still questioning if he could still get back the two kids he lost. 

It’s like the usual story of his life undone for once. Instead of watching family members die now they’re coming back and they’re just here now. 

Meanwhile FAI just looks SHATTERED. He’s not even looking up. He’s been forced to close his eyes. He looks heartbroken.  And I can’t tell if it’s because he knows what they went through to get here or if he is just so relieved that it’s them that it’s taking him a moment to actually believe it.

Incredible all round.

But The tone of this page! 

Sakura and Syaoran just look sad, even when they confirm it’s them. Maybe they’re hesitant? Or maybe it’s hard for them to be back here and seeing them all after all this time? Fai’s eyes are completely covered in that second panel with his face in shadow, and in the third he’s got a bit of a hesitant smile to his face when he tries to brush it off. It's all genuine, messy emotion, and I think it’s a sign of just how much this has thrown everyone off. 

I just love it. 

I think Fai didn’t let himself believe the happy option was even possible at first, so realising that he was right and that he can be happy about this might take a moment.

thank you for saying this anon i’ve been thinking of it a lot actually. i’m morally and legally binded to choose childhood friend!sugu no matter what because he’s literally……. my favorite Ever. and i think the inherent devotion of the childhood friend trope blends soooo well with his natural devotion. his protective urges. etcetc. i have wayyyy too many thoughts about childhood friend!sugu 😭 but it mostly boils down to him wanting to be by your side forever. he wants to make you happy and he wants to protect you and he knows you so well that he doesn’t trust anyone else to love you like he can. he’s selfish and he wants you to lean on him more than he wants anything for himself.

childhood friend!toru though….. i feel like he would be your estranged childhood friend. that makes most sense to me :3 like, you met when you were really really young, and ended up playing together in an empty park. he was a brat, kind of quiet, and you were just sweet, y’know? you were the closest thing to a friend he had as a child. then you ended up moving away, he never got to say goodbye… and you meet again as adults. you don’t remember him — it was just so, so long ago — but he remembers you. he remembers you a little too well.

so now you just kinda have to deal with this tall, handsome, cheery man who keeps talking to you like you’re best friends even though you literally don’t remember him…. he’s sweet though. a little annoying, but sweet. he has a soft spot for you. i think having anything remotely close to a childhood friend makes him feel human in a way he can’t help but crave.

sooooo. overall!!! both are good :3 i will always be a childhood friend!sugu truther before anything else but childhood friend!toru has sm potential..

just rewatched tfatws and.. damn this show is really slept on i feel like. i mean they did a pretty good job of making critiques of the us military, the government’s use of the term ‘terrorist’, the fact that a black man being captain america holds a lot more weight than a white man doing so (but also constantly proving that sam is absolutely worthy of holding the title), and it gives both sam and bucky plenty of screen time both together and separately. also karli was a really convincing antagonist because the only times i found myself disagreeing with her was when she chose to sacrifice lives for her cause, but the cause itself was understandable. like idk i think they cooked up a very solid show but it really didn’t get the recognition it deserved, probably because people were expecting a buddy cop comedy or something
