They're a very sensitive & friendly person, despite always looking pissed off at the world (😒 “RBF” on the outside & 🥺 anxious “softy” on the inside)

𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐳 is a HUGE scaredy-cat 🙀 (avoiding anything they deem to be “frightening”); unless someone they care about, a child, or someone who's otherwise defenceless, is put in danger... they get braver when another's life is at stake (sadly, they never think about their own safety in those situations 😵)

They have 𝟶 idea how to deal with flirting; they generally remain perfectly blank on the outside but are absolutely freaking out internally (R.I.P. to their calm facade if they find themselves attracted to the person flirting with them) 😳!?!?!

𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐳 experiences a lot of despair when they think about their existence as a helvling & who they might have been before ... sometimes to an overwhelming degree 🫠 (they try their best not to burden anyone else with these feelings, keeping it all internalized)

They'll forever treasure the little 𝘸𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘵 𝑬𝒗𝒍𝒊𝒏 gifted them 🐈‍⬛ (something physical to remind them they ARE doing good whenever they're stuck in dark thoughts)

𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐳 is quiet around those they're unfamiliar with; often speaking in a hushed voice or letting 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐚 speak for them 🫣 (𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐳 is much more chatty when they're with people they find “comfortable” 🤗)

I'm not sure if this was asked, but how does Shea feel about Mc braiding their hair. Or wanting to comb it. In my case, my Mc would feel comfortable doing it because they miss their long hair before the whole Helvling thing.

I think it would depend on Shea's relationship with the MC, and the level of trust between them; they wouldn’t soon entrust the care of their hair to a helvling who has often attacked (or otherwise hurt) them in the past.

10/10 would recommend giving virtues end a run it’s pretty short and not yet finished but it’s one of the first interactive fictions I read and one that is very vividly written.

SCOUT by @anya-dev im crying. im scratching at the floorboards. im crawling on the walls. im barking in a cage. scout is such a fucking interesting post apoc story. the reason is unclear but at the time of the story it doesnt particularly matter. but at the same time it does so much. i want to know SO MUCH. Oliver was the fucking blueprint for my god damn brainrot.

Glad you enjoy my absurdly named Lomai :^) Here are my impressions thus far:

⭐ What is your OC afraid of? Any crippling phobias or some such? How do they act when scared and what helps them calm down? Does anyone ever find your OC scary? Why?

I don't think she has any phobias, but she is very conscious of the opinions of those she cares about (EX: Shea). She is. Very Fearful that, while some may treat her with kindness, care, and respect, they'll just see her as something dangerous and unapproachable in the end. As such, she certainly has an interesting reaction to finding Shea's sketch of the helspawn she was Bound to.

Her reaction to being scared is probably just. Maximum tension! Fingers curved like claws and ready to strike, even when the thing scaring her doesn't necessarily warrant a fight response. The best way to calm her is to gently reassure her that Things Are Safe while giving her some distance (but a grounding touch from someone she is okay with can also help).

Being a helvling, a lot of people probably do find her scary, but even to those that don't, Lomai can be a bit unsettling. I like to imagine that she moves very quietly, you turn around and suddenly she's There. Joints bend a little farther than you think they should. Posture and movement of a cat barghest but translated through a human skeleton. She stretches and somehow her body is longer than you thought it would be??? Very Intent, Unblinking Gaze. Those sorts of things.

📀 How easy is it to shock your OC? To confuse them? To lie to them, to manipulate them? How are they with feelings of trust? Can your OC be trusted?

By nature of her occupation, I imagine Lomai is not easily shocked. And there's not much to be confused about when all she's been trained to do is find and hunt the next helspawn entity, find and hunt, find and hunt, etc., etc.

She tends to be distrustful, takes a while to warm up to people. Unfortunately, once trust is granted and she's categorized someone under "This Person is Nice :^)", it's easy to lie to and manipulate her because she will trust fully and wholeheartedly.

😊 What can make your OC smile even when they’re feeling down? What cheers them up and makes everything feel better for them? Is your OC genrally a happy person and do they enjoy making others smile? What about your OC makes others happy?

So far, I don't think Lomai is very expressive through facial features, but! Find her in a good sunny spot and maybe you'll see a little smile. Cheer her up with a little kiss on the forehead or right between the eyebrows (where there's a perfect target). I think little gestures that let her know that someone thought of her will also do the trick. Share a little snack with her and her mood will brighten 😌

She tends to have a flat affect, but she does like making others smile even though she doesn't always know how. I'm not sure what about her makes those people happy, but she Will wrap up their blanket nice n neat, make eye contact and slow blink at them, will reach out for a rare touch, will cook them a good meal, will quietly exist in the same space as them. Quiet, little things to say, "Hey! I love you and hope you smile :^)"

Got inspired to draw today. Here is my helvling MC, Ingrid Varsk. She's from @virtuesend-cog 's game, Virtue's End. Decided for her to have a big happy smile. Not sure if I am happy with this, might do another drawing of her again soon. (PS. I checked for the tags, but if I miss smt/tagged wrong, please let me know!)

If we do potentially meet other Keepers with their Helvling how would Shea treat MC worse when being around them? As an act for how Keepers are suppose to treat their Helvling.

Shea wouldn't treat the MC any worse just to maintain appearances, or to fit in better with the other Keepers or anything like that—that would go against their own principals. However, they would treat the MC a bit more... distant, reserved (yes, even more so than usual, lol), when on official Order grounds. They'd also encourage the MC to not draw any undue attention towards themselves, lest they get lashed for insubordination.

There are only about 25 to 30 Keepers active across the Realms, and most know each other by reputation alone. By word of mouth, Shea has gained a name for being a touch too 'soft' with their helvling, but that's the extend of it. Most bet that Shea would be dead sooner rather than later, but luckily Shea has defied the odds so far. :-)

In general, Shea just tends to avoid interacting with the others, or visiting Order grounds, usually taking on the more remote jobs. It's worked so far, but sadly... you can't avoid doing so forever.

Love your writing! I’ve played a few IFs and very few of them stand out in terms of quality: A compelling plot, three dimensional characters, an enjoyable MC, and relevant player choices. Yours is one of them!

since i've started writing, i haven't really been reading IFs like i used to, and there are a lot of newer games that i haven't had the chance to play, and others that i've not had the time to catch up on. but here are some of my favorites, in no particular order:

god of the red mountain by @friendlybowlofsoup - i love this game so much. there is a lot of replayability here and i love the setting & the huge cast of characters. i could go on and on but honestly just go play it if you haven't!

diaspora by @diasporatheblog - another game with a lot of replayability and a lot of really interesting characters. the opening of this game has always stuck with me. also the game design itself is something i aspire to with tnp.

virtue's end (18+) by @crimsiswrites - my fellow monster hunter... another game where i really love the setting, and the worldbuilding with helvlings and their keepers. currently undergoing a rewrite, & i recommend checking out all the info on the blog before playing through the old demo.

project hadea (18+) by @nyehilismwriting - every time i read this game i get an uncontrollable urge to write sci-fi and watch alien. writing is very compelling and i love the alien designs, refreshing to actually see something... alien!!

scout: an apocalypse story by @anya-dev - i am behind on updates (sorry fake fan) but i love scout so much, one of the few games where i really love all of the companions, also we all know i am weak for friends to lovers.... i also really love apocalypse stories that feel... hopeful? and that are about community, rather than individual survival.

crosshollow foundations by @townofcrosshollow - i love the character creation in this one, and i love being an "observer" and guiding the characters in their choices. i've linked crosshollow's itch.io page here because jasper has a few other games that revolve around the universe of crosshollow.

snakeroot & walk with me by @cerberus-writes - cer has such a beautiful way with words... he knows this i scream about his writing all the time & i can't recommend them enough. snakeroot is a modern horror fantasy, another fellow monster hunter! walk with me is a bit different, with bitsy gameplay, where you take a walk and have a conversation with a god.

a tale of crowns (16+) by @ataleofcrowns - another game i am unfortunately not up to date on (i’m so sorry) but i did stay up super late reading the first three or four chapters all at once! a really great fantasy game with a refreshing setting and a really great cast of characters. also love the attention to detail and the small touches that go into personalizing the crown.

body count (18+) by @bodycountgame - oh this game is so fun, fun writing, fun characters, a fun premise! this is actually my favorite kind of modern horror, where a group of fun young adults are off to have a cute adventure or something but then... something terrible happens! murder! maybe an unexpected twist or two! also i love bad reality television so like... truly it’s perfect.

a limber love by @copperspines - ohh i love this game, i’ve played through for all seven endings and i just love speculative horror fiction like this. good atmosphere and i love the illustrations.

the spirited: origins by @yuveim - my other favorite kind of modern horror: ghost hunting!!! really good horror writing in this, and i’m excited to see how the relationships between all the characters unfold going forward, and how exactly we’re going to deal with the whole demon thing...

the exile (18+) by @exilethegame - another game where i really like the character customization and the worldbuilding, and no one should be surprised i like playing characters like the commander. this game has a lot of replayability and lots of secrets to uncover.

blood moon (18+) by @barbwritesstuff - werewolves, ghosts, and vampires, oh my! updates when the moon is full (yes i am behind on this one barb writes so fast it’s insane). a great cast, lots of choices and branching and replayability. werewolves are the superior supernatural love interest and i will die on this hill.

the goodfellows & creature’s cradle by @thecuriouseye - the goodfellows is so interesting, again the worldbuilding and lore in this one is just chef’s kiss!! dark fantasy with giant monsters and heavy consequences. creature’s cradle is a supernatural post-apocalyptic story with zombies, vampires, werewolves, and more. the current demo is short and sweet but i’m excited for more.

boundary pass by @boundarypass-if - as someone who has worked as both a park ranger and a forest ranger, this game really gets me. i love the kind of horror you can only experience when you’re alone out in the wilderness....

when it hungers (16+) by @roast-ifs - i love the setting of this one: fantasy 1910s. really cool species available for character customization, and some good horror writing. i love the team dynamic of the main cast, and how the main character struggles to find their place in it without their memories.

greenwarden by @fiddles-ifs - yet another fantasy horror game! modern setting this time. really interesting main character, with a past that seems to be haunting them... but right now there’s a mystery to be solved and a monster to track.

contrition by @nihilnovisubsole - i’ve recommended this one before but i really love it, the atmosphere, the writing, everything about it... it’s stuck with me and it’s a great read.

this is by no means a complete list of IFs i enjoy but hopefully there is something new for you in here that you like. i’m sure i’m forgetting some that i will curse myself for later... there’s a lot of talent in the IF community and there are a lot of new stories just getting started that i just haven’t had the time to read, but you can always browse my other games tag for newer intro posts as well.

Interactive Summer: Day 6 - Shade “Turning over one of the last pages, you suddenly come across a vivid yet abstract sketch of a nokken, sharp claws reaching towards the viewer while long strands of hair obscure their form.  You nearly drop the book in shock, flinching as the image is revealed to you. Is this how Shea truly sees you?” [Virtue’s End by Crimsis] ____________________________________________________ Okay, so I really loved this scene. I am playing a Nokken (I am sooo happy about this option) helvling, and yes, I image her to look human enough to confuse(/seduce) others at first glance. Also, I believe Shea has much more better drawing skills than moi ^^””” - sorry Crimsis - I really tried to make it scary (unsuccessfully) yet still attractive. Also, don’t mind the legs and hands, I was in a hurry - however still high because I captured the expression of my poor helvling as I intedned, and it was such a great feeling after having a horrible art block.  Please go any play the Virtue’s End (it’s under rewriting, but the old version is such a nice intoruction) it has a great premise and such an interesting world. Like Crimsis’ illustations as well  ♡.♡ and write nice messages.

Top 20: my favorite interactive stories

Once I saw that one of my popular and mostly likeable posts was about IF, I decided to share with you my personal top of the best IF authors I have known. 

I read a lot of WIPs (work in progress) and finished novels since three long years, so I might recommend truly incredible stories. I apologies for adding pics and some additional info about my MC, but I wanted to bring spark of life into this top.

I'll start with telling about quartet of works greatly affected on me. It was almost like… living my second life. It felt so real, so vibrant. In the darkest times it gave me the strenght to meet the next day.

The premise is simple: 12 singles are sent to a villa on a tropical island and they live there together for a month. After 28 days, the couple who is voted by the other islanders as being most likely to withstand the test of time will win £500,000. In addition, the couple with the highest body count will win £500,000. Total prize pool? £1,000,000.

In this context, “body count” refers to how many people you’ve slept with… right? Well, that’s what you think when you sign your contract. Turns out, though, that not all of your fellow cast members will be using that definition to get to the prize.

This, of course, puts a price on your head. An AI module goes for billions on the black market; carrying one around in your skull is, perhaps, not the safest idea. Sure, you’re more than a match for anyone who might come after you - but no-one outside the high levels of Scytha knows about it, so you should be safe anyway, right?
