Vintage MTI (Movie Tie-In) from the 1977 terrorist suspense film starring George Segal, Richard Widmark, Timothy Bottoms, Henry Fonda, Harry Guardino, Susan Strasberg, & Helen Hunt. From IMDB: A blackmailer threatens to sabotage roller-coasters at various American amusement parks if he isn't paid a huge ransom. * Is the third film to be presented in "Sensurround", a special low-frequency bass speaker setup consisting of four huge speakers loaned by distributors to select theaters showing the film. This system was employed only during certain sequences of the film, and was so powerful that it actually cracked plaster at some movie theaters. "Sensurround" was employed in only three other films released by Universal: Earthquake (1974), Midway (1976), and the theatrical release of Battlestar Galactica (1978). First film where real location sound effects were recorded in Sensurround. The July/August 1977 edition of "Movie News" (Australia) magazine reported, "... a separate Senssurround sound crew was on hand throughout location filming, recording on prototype equipment designed for extremely low and high frequencies to give the film a dramatically realistic multiple-perspective sound" * The roller coaster featured in the main climax of the movie is the Revolution at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, CA. It opened in 1976 and was the first roller coaster to feature a complete 360-degree vertical loop. A plaque commemorating where the scene was filmed in which Timothy Bottoms' character was killed in the climax of the film still stands at Six Flags Magic Mountain. * The teen-idol fan magazines Tiger Beat and 16 reported to their readers in 1976 that the Scottish glam-rock band the Bay City Rollers were to perform in this film. However, the Rollers never did appear in this (or any other) theatrical film, and another glam-rock outfit, Sparks, are heard on the soundtrack instead. Another act that was rumored to have been offered an opportunity to appear in the film was KISS but they allegedly turned it down. Ironically, the band would film their much maligned film KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park (1978) at Six Flags Magic Mountain, which was featured in this film. The concert MC was played by Charlie Tuna. * Diamond Farnsworth (son of Richard Farnsworth) was a stuntman on this film, and he broke his back filming the climactic ending when the Revolution crashed into the bomber. * Debut feature film of actors Craig Wasson and Steve Guttenberg. Guttenberg got this break thanks to his godfather and mentor Michael Bell. * The original ending shot for this movie had Timothy Bottoms getting his feet caught in the roller-coaster track, as he tries to jump off, and his legs get severed from the car. It was judged far to graphic (and might have resulted in an R rating) and the scene was shorted where you see the cars woosh past him. Edited so that you see no impact at all, just his body thrown to the ground. Title: Rollercoaster Author: Burton Wohl (based on the screenplay by Richard Levinson & William Link) Publisher: Dell 17457 Cover Illustration: Movie Poster Cover Paperback Original (PBO) Printing: 1st, June 1977 I WANT IT! So old movies in this day and age are a refined taste. Almost not worth reviewing. But I’m my own woman so I’m going to do it anyway, no one reads this blog anyways.
The happenings in Rollercoaster is something we are all to familiar with nowadays. Back then it was less likely to be a massive issue as people never really resorted to such awful things but terrorism is an issue which is becoming more frequent and it’s scary and with this knowledge I feel like the issues presented in this film are relevant enough for the 1977 classic to become re-known if only as a warning to prove that no where is safe.
I can imagine that when this film initially released that the original idea was very promising, I could be wrong but acts such as blowing up amusement parks were practically unheard of which, probably made the thrill and suspense of this film appealing as it just couldn’t be real. However, that suspense remains but where the thrill used to be has been replaced with caution and horror. The film is still quite appealing as it’s intended disaster/suspense genre in this day, but after recent events it takes on a horroresque quality as things like this are all too real to us now.
What got to me during this film was how unfazed the villain seemed to be. He literally committed mass murder and just walked away like it was the most boring thing he has ever seen, and if that isn't scary then I don’t know what is. I think that really shows the depth some people will go to for money, and there was clearly something wrong with this guy as he didn’t even bat an eyelid at what he was doing for a million dollars. I think there is a possibility that this film is a little insensitive for this decade but in a way I think that is a good thing. We can’t  keep glossing over things like this if we want these issues to be addressed so I think it is important to bring this classic back for exactly that. Why be ignorant.
I believe Rollercoaster deserves a 7/10 for the suspense alone. George Segal’s character was so close to the killer at all times that it hurt to watch, we needed him to see and catch him for it to stop. Again when his family decided to go to the next chosen theme park to be targeted, the idea that additional innocents with a personal attachment to us through our hero could be dragged into the disaster zone rippled fear through me that echoed that of the character. The fact that a supposedly outdated film could do that says a lot, its just as relevant now as it was then. Intimate suspense is definitely different from that found in horror, just waiting for something to happen to a personal attachment is more engaging and thrilling than anything and definitely gets your mind working. Anyway, even the oldies are worth a watch. Don’t judge a film by its visual quality.

“IL CLIENTE HA SEMPRE RAGIONE”
Tumblr media

Bowie e Springsteen sono a prendere polvere in alto a destra sullo scaffale, Oriali gira in giacca e cravatta e Facchetti l’ho pianto.
