Obsessed with characters who portray themselves as worse than they are. Who are lying to everyone including themselves about it. People generally assume if someone's lying about themselves they're trying to look better but sometimes they're trying to look worse. They attribute agency to where they had none, add intent to accidents, try to convince everyone that this is something they did instead of something that happened to them.

The way in Knives Out that the entire Thrombey family constantly subjected Marta to racism for years ranging from micro aggressions to outright threats of deportation, that she knew all their fucked up dirty laundry and how they all were constantly exploiting Harlan's wealth, that they excluded her from Harlan's funeral and each blamed everyone else for it, and that they immediately dropped all pretenses of condescending civility when the will was read, yet she spent almost the entire movie sympathetic of them and wanting to gift them the fortune Harlan left her before finally standing up for herself in the last hour
Vs
The way in Glass Onion that Helen outright hated the entire "disrupters" group for at least ~10yrs before the movie even took place and made her opinion explicitly known, that her acting as her twin sister being jilted was so easy to maintain because she hated the entire group so much, that she didn't at all humor their extremely conditional "comradery" with her cause against Miles, and that in the end when everything was said and done she didn't stick around to watch them all turn on each other because it didn't matter anymore if they did or didn't
Marta's kindness got her the house.
Helen's justified fury burned Miles' down.

do we think Ruvina, goddess of winter and sorrow, took the sorrow domain after the loss of Ankarna.
Her sibling is dead, something unfathomable for a god.
Her sibling the go of summer, of warmth, or protective wrath especially towards anyone who dared harm Ruvina.
Do you think in the absence of true warmth Ruvina told the Giant races to huddle together? to keep each other warm because now the sun cannot. because isn't that what was do when we lose someone that is our everything?
we greave and pull strength from our community so that we can move forward everyday.
Lucy Frostblade was not a happy soul, but she was a kind one. Why would her god be any different.

i just got to the part of pride & prejudice in like. chapter 34 when mr. darcy goes to lizzy and says "In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." and um. yeah if I were a girl in the regency era reading this for the first time right as it was published they would've sent me to the seaside to treat my hysteria

i am so sick of this
there is an established relationship between advanced age of the father and risks to the mother, to the pregnancy, to the fetus, and later to the child.
older men’s ticking biological clocks are harmful. their ages literally compound the dangers to women and to the children they have. increased age of fathers is related to things like gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and preterm birth, just to make a few. later health and mental problems have been observed in children of older fathers.
the number of older fathers is increasing. men feel entitled to father children well into elderliness. men also tend to seek out young women with which to have these children. the maternal mortality rate in the U.S. is currently the highest it has been since the 1960s. abortion rights in the U.S. are in extreme peril. this altogether makes the risk to women who reproduce w/ older men much, much greater.
i think we as a society need to start talking about this a bit.
screenshots of additional NYT article under the cut because i couldn’t figure out how to link without the paywall.
