the idea that ancient greek tragedy and mythology* are universal has hindered the way we read those texts so much. it encourages a superficial reading that separates eminently political genres from their sociohistorical context
*not talking about comedy bc most ppl ignore greek comedy, i feel
#inspired by the frenchmen dissing the freudian takes in oedipus#but also medea. deep diving into sociohistorical context is key#ppl understandably get stuck on medea killing her children. overlooking that-> this is an invention of euripides! the bagage of child#sacrifice in this culture! whatmedea represents! how she wins all of her mental duels with her husband and yet that doesn’t help her bc of#her lower social status-> she is a barbarian on top of a woman#everything about euripides’ medea is incredibly ambivalent and that becomes clearer with the context#what i am saying is not that the play isn’t understandable unless you read a TON on bibliography. what I am saying is#thinking we understand something leads us to judge it with our own values/morals etc#when it should encourage us to try and put ourselves in the place of the ppl in that culture#how they would have read it and why those characters are written like that in the first place

You know, I have decided to go through a route with Impa that does humanize her, and I know why I did that and I like that I did that, but honestly there's absolutely room to interpret her as a Majora-grade villain, and that would both make sense, be terrifying, and be very interesting to unpack too
#thoughts#impa#oot#(I said oot but it would encompass every single one of her reincarnations)#I latched on the unquestioned servant angle because that is both how we are supposed to see her and also that it's normal and evident#which I wanted to challenge a bit#but#there's also the possibility that she lets herself exist as a tool#but has much more power over the course of things that we can even imagine#ready to sacrifice anyone and anything to make sure the Legend Keeps Occuring#she could be interpreted as the will of gods in a human shape#always there and always putting the pieces exactly where they belong#and that is also a super cool intepretation of her#I like Impa dead inside but Impa as the secret pin holding the cosmic horror show together is also incredibly compelling to me#(which she always is at least a little but I feel like there's levels of cognition and agency in that)#(and depending on how much agency she have she can either be pretty tragic or a full blown eldtritch horror)#(and both are fun honestly)

Cherry. (Man, this is going to need some tag rambling; because while it's what I suspected and it's very fitting in many ways, I need to address one element).
In popular culture, cherries have come to represent sensuality, sex, and seduction. In the cult classic, Twin Peaks, Audrey Horne expresses her sexual expertise by tying a cherry stem with her tongue. "Cherry" is also used to refer to the concept of virginity: why? I don't know to be honest, but here we are. Much like the cherry, you're a sensual person who enjoys all the creature comforts the world offers. You enjoy delicious food, dynamic relationships, passionate lovemaking and stimulating conversation; however, you may also come across a touch vapid or shallow, due to your quickly fading attention when something has served its usefulness to you. i legitimately dont think catra was any more wrong than adora in terms of their relationship towards each other for most of the show actually

They meet as married men and pine for each other hardcore and are also trying not to read too much into how their interest seems reciprocated and oh nooooo both Immigration/the IRS and the the Church/in-laws/DADT era army dudes or whatever are snooping around at the same time at each of their marriages and they have to be so good at being married at the people they are married to oh noooooo and they other guy doesn’t know why they are suddenly being iced out and maybe they were just imagining things? maybe it’s for the best with all these eyes around on them…

Won’t ever really stop thinking about the line “I’ll be with [Rory], like I should be.” from The Angels Take Manhattan. Because like, that’s such a particular word choice, y’know? Should is not the same thing as “want to” - and I don’t necessarily think that Amy didn’t want to be with Rory, but I do think she didn’t want to have to permanently chose between one life and the other, TARDIS life and normal life. She knows that choice is coming, that she should choose, and specifically what she should choose. Her own daughter famously says that you can’t run with the Doctor forever. Rory is her husband, is safe and stable and constantly present, in a way the Doctor and the universe just cannot be. But that doesn’t mean she’s happy to make the choice, or that there’s no conflict in the decision. There’s a reason she’s crying when saying goodbye.
I think a lot of people just take for granted that Amy was fine like she said (“you know when grownups tell you everything’s going to be fine and you think they’re probably lying?”) or only view the tragedy of it all from the Doctor’s perspective - which in fairness, he’s the character we keep following, and the one whose struggle to move on we actually witness. But I can’t see Amy as just happily accepting her fate without at least some sort of processing of her grief happening beforehand. Like yes, TATM ending is completely her choice and she owns that, but just because she’s able to make that choice doesn’t mean she was really ready to or willing to without a literal paradox forcing her hand (“sometimes the only choices you have are bad ones, but you still have to choose”), and I think there’s a lot we’re not privy to between her tearful goodbye and her calm acceptance of things in the Afterword.
Amy’s a writer, a storyteller who understands the powers of words. And there’s a world of difference between “want to” and “should”.

It's so disappointing and unfair that some Minthara dialogue lines are just. Well. Gone? For example, she didn't say anything after Lae'zel was kidnapped by Orin, and I think she.. logically, should have something to say about it? Same as - after Astarion's ascension. She does comment on Shadowheart sacrificing her parents, but she doesn't say anything after Astarion ascends? Only before? THAT'S SO UNFAIR. Let my wife talk!! I want to know what she feels/thinks after Astarion becomes a vampire lord! Please!!

#[ tifa lockhart. ] she had buried the twinges of guilt beneath the narcissism of self-sacrifice. beneath the belief of 'the greater good'.#[ tifa lockhart / et cetera. ] but i work for shinra. i'm the enemy. / i don't care. i don't want anyone to die. please!#[ tifa lockhart / meta. ] people have many things pent up inside of themselves. so many things they can never forget. strange isn't it?#[ it has been years and i still never can decide what to 'file' this stuff under. probably just a me problem. ]#[ it's not quite meta because i didn't write it-- it's also not 'relevance' because-- well. not using it for this. ]#[ any way-- this was /very/ fun actually. and i sat here in contemplation for a few of them. ]#[ this actually puts into perspective; again; why i love the nuance of animation that remake gives tifa. ]#[ the voice and animation definitely added to just about anyone; i always want to point out how much of tifa is in the subtleties. ]#[ the clenched fists-- the self-hugging. the doubt that lingers within regardless of anger. and how it's shown even in little gestures. ]#[ like when she suggests going out on the town with cloud and he questions her for half a moment-- she folds back in on herself. ]#[ same thing with the train for example-- literally rooted in place. and it's not taking away from the bravery she holds on many levels. ]#[ it's the nuance of bravery-- that it isn't black or white. you can have doubt and i think the remake did a chef's kiss job with that. ]#[ because we're so immensely layers as human beings-- so it's incredible to me to see a game reflect on that so heavily. ]#[ that game is incredibly human. it's an incredibly good depiction of human nature and reactions. ]#[ and god-- the VAs add to that magnificently. truly. ]#[ i literally cannot praise britt enough. she was so nervous and she aced it. they all did. ]#[ god; all i can think about (especially) is the 'what-ifs'-- literally. doubt. /doubt/. and that is what makes her so good. so real. ]#[ i'm gonna ramble a little more; excuse me-- can we talk about how realistic that is? no one who's brave won't doubt their actions. ]#[ tifa has lost everything to shinra-- sephiroth is shinra 'gone wrong'. she lost everything at his hands and no one could stop him. ]#[ not even shinra itself and that's very important. there's so much anger there that drives her to do selfish things. ]#[ and i note selfish because on the way to a smile has touched on this magnificently as i'd hoped it would. ]#[ she wants them to pay-- she wants her revenge. but she; arguably more than anyone; is aware of what that costs. ]#[ if avalanche goes through with this-- and she helps-- AND SHE DOES. she is responsible for people losing... ]#[ what she once lost. ]#[ and that is /so important/ to her character. before that happens; she is riddled with doubt. before she boards the train-- ]#[ when she's boarded the train and needs to jump off. that moment is /the/ moment where she makes a huge decision. ]#[ because look at how she is once she's jumped off. that entire chapter. she's relatively certain. she's going through with it. ]#[ no way back. ]#[ and then the plate falls not long after. /and then the plate is dropped/. yep. ]#[ ... i'm about to hit tag limit; don't worry-- i'll type about this soon. it's in my onenote! ]

as much as i love twilight princess i really do wish that they had let midna be the holder of the triforce of wisdom
#rambles#loz#idk while I absolutely adore tp zelda#i wish her sacrifice had more of a lasting impact#first time I experienced that sequence i was in shock and awe and tears#but then she just … comes back ? idk#maybe I’d be more ok w it if it had a better explanation in the game#and having midna. the twilight princess. hold the triforce of wisdom. just sounds so incredible#i need to go to bed
