My brain adores the idea that the daughters of Lord Hesperus the Evening Star are the beautiful sunset nymphs that protect the golden (forbidden) fruit of immortality.
“ The Hesperides were entrusted with the care of the tree of the golden apples which was had been presented to the goddess Hera by Gaia (the Earth) on her wedding day. They were assisted by a hundred-headed guardian-Drakon (Dragon). The three nymphs and their glowing, golden apples were regarded as the source of the golden light of sunset.”
It’s so cool when myths reaffirm little ideas like this. This is all upg but it just makes so much sense in my mind that the daughters of Lucifer are the nymphs who keep forbidden fruit, accompanied by a hundred headed dragon of all things. It perfectly reflects astral experiences I’ve had with Lucifer, the Garden of the Hesperides feels like a place I frequent often.

Even though it feels like a silly reason, the only way I can rationalize Aphrodite’s treatment of Eos while she simultaneously left Ares’s more important lovers who he had children with alone is if Eos was the most beautiful of all Ares’s lovers 2nd only to Aphrodite herself
I mean, think about it… every time a child or descendant of hers is physically described, they’re always a fine shyt
Memnon was considered by Odysseus considered to be the most handsome man he’d ever known, and he’s has seen a lot of men including famous fine shyt Achilles and Aphrodite’s own son Aeneas
Odysseus himself is a descendant of Eos, and it’s pretty obvious that he was a fine shyt just looking at how many gorgeous women and goddesses wanted him
Chione, Odysseus’s great grandmother had an insane amount of suitors but also caught the attention of both Hermes and Apollo
Hesperus was attractive enough to compete with Aphrodite herself in a beauty contest
Phaethon and his doomed line speaks for itself
I’m not sure if there’s any goddess with a better track record of producing baddies (Aphrodite’s kids are almost perfect but she has Priapus, a son no one is proud of having)

Beauty contest between Hesperus and Venus, judged by Apollo
Roman fresco (1st century CE) from the House of Gavius Rufus, Pompeii
Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples, Campania, Italy
Apollo sits on a fancy throne with an aureole above his head. He wears a flashy red robe that barely even covers his leg, and holds a hook while he looks up at Hesperus. Hesperus stands on the stairs showcasing his beauty and holding a sword. He, too, only has a robe that barely covers a leg. On the sidelines is Venus awaiting her turn to present herself. She wears a crown, as well as a bracelet and necklace, and has a black robe that only covers her thighs – it looks like she’s taking it off.

Red-figure vase-painting of Nyx, Selene, Hesperus, 4th century BC.
The gods of the night - Nyx, Hesperus and Selene - are traveling across the sky. Nyx, goddess of the night, leads the procession with her arm raised. She is followed by Hesperus, god of the evening star, who is depicted as a head surrounded by the shining halo of his star. Selene, goddess of the moon, appears last, seated on a horse in a side saddle, her fluttering garment forming the shape of a crescent moon.

More info about the Astra Planeta in Dream of Helios:
-Stilbon, the Prophet (Mercury): The Star of Knowledge, his role is to be the speaker for THE SUN, and thus he is the only one who communicates with Him regularly. He tends to not take anything his siblings do seriously.
-Eosphorus, the Shepherd (Venus): The Star of Peace, his role is to keep stability in the mortal realm and assure that it does not tear itself apart through human conflict. He tries to have a good relationship with the rest of his family, but often fails quite badly.

Rauh Civilization utilized kidney stones for magic.
This started when someone on the Smoughtown Discord had mentioned the possibility of Marika's village being a family of Dryads (Credit to Mangolovers for this observation). I went on, further claiming that they were likely inspired by the Hesperides; Greek Dryads of The Golden Evening. in Roman texts, they're noted to be the daughters of Hesperus. In other sources they're said to be the daughters of Atlas. (completely aside but possibly useful info: Atlas is claimed to have invented the "Celestial Sphere" which supported their understanding of being "fixed upon a starry sphere.")
Hesperus is the "Evening Star," or the planet Venus as seen in the evening, and the brother of Atlas. Hesperus was often confused with his brother Eosphorus, aka Phosphorus, the "Morning Star," because they were both represented by the same planet. Phosphorus translates to mean "bearer of light." (this phrase also translates to "Lucifer," which is also known for giving the gift/curse of knowledge to humans)
In the Ruins of Rauh, we begin to find Spirit Calculi. A Calculus in the biological sense, is a stone, like say, a kidney stone. The Spirit Calculus is noted to smell bad and give off a white light. The stench is supposedly a sign of a strong spiritual presence.
Kidney stones are compound crystalline masses typically comprised of calcium-phosphate; Phosphate just being an ion of Phosphorus.
Phosphorus, in Alchemy, is the element that can harness Light itself. I imagine a crystal stone of calcium-phosphate would be much more controlled and manageable as a substance than pure phosphorus, which would just combust upon contact with air.
Following this line of reason, I believe the Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword (or the Amogus as i lovingly call it) is not Obsidian as ine might expect, but a massive chunk of Iron-Nickel Meteorite that contained veins of Schreibersite.
Schreibersite is a rare earth mineral that's currently understood to be an original source for life on earth, and the precursor to "Pyrophosphate" which is a key ingredient in the production of ATP; a chemical considered key in the existence of life. (Pyrophosphate as a name could also be superficially broken down into "fire-light-spark" as well, which i feel is appropriate)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Amogus was a weapon of very old gods, who perhaps recognized the power and usefulness of Schreibersite..
Or perhaps, It's possible that these old gods were borne of the meteor itself, and veins of Schreibersite created concentrations of Pyrophosphate which coursed across their bodies?
Consider, the wild life-giving power of the Crucible's source traces back to Rauh, and the first Crucible Knight is there to make that clear. I believe new life borne of the Crucible, began to try and imitate the old gods which granted them life. The Rauh would learn to extract this lifegiving power from their own bodies as they began to learn/realize ways in which their bodies contained remnants of the source of their gods' power; from harvesting bones, to possibly contracting/passing kidney stones as a manner of ritual practice.
This information and the stories revolving around Rauh civilization have been nearly completely lost to time, even if the original ideas were expanded upon and simply lost their roots, or accidentally rediscovered through other means-- There's already a hermit we meet in game, who has rediscovered forbidden magic all on his own, wielding copper heads on a stick as a flail.. who's to say that harnessing lost magic doesn't come to the odd person serendipitously or through deep independent research like this?
but allow me to go even further, just to solidify some aspect of this idea from within the game
While doing a bit of the usual, initial perusing of wikipedia pages as one does.. i noted something deeply peculiar; a poignant phrase with its own little section: "Hesperus is Phosphorus"

this boils down the entirety of Goldmask's quest. Goldmask was trying to use "a priori" knowledge to understand a flaw in the logic of the Golden Order, but he's an outsider looking in. It is only when the Tarnished comes to him with new, empirical evidence that he begins to understand what is happening. you use the literal Law of Regression on a statue of Marika to understand that "Radagon is Marika," and this tidbit of information is something that aligns with what Goldmask was suspicious about. he points at the Erdtree, not knowing the solution to his problem, but knows what variable is throwing his solution through a loop. giving him information that confirms his views, reinforces his perspective.

Hesperus, bringing everything that shining Eos (the Dawn) scattered, you bring the sheep, you bring the goat, you bring back the child to its mother. [Hesperus] the fairest of all Asteres (Stars).

The chalice extends from the masculine and feminine, male and female, sitting between the two poles without conflict, and connecting all the elements with intellect. The magician sits in the centre, keeping all things balanced around them. When all of these things sit in their perfect position, we see the God of Enlightenment, Lord Lucifer, the champion of Venus, who connects our psyche with our reality, enabling us to influence the world around us as it has influenced us. The Morning Star is the result of natural forces existing in harmony with divine intellect, one never over powering the other. Lord Lucifer is the God who exists between chaos and order. Lord Eosphoros rises, Lord Hesperus falls. In order to walk in his light we must be willing to accept the relationship between these things. We must know that he is love and he is light, even in times of darkness.

Evening, The Evening Star, Hesperus, Vesper
Artist: Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898)
Date: 1870
Medium: Watercolour, bodycolour and gum arabic on paper
Collection: Private Collection
The picture has had several names. Burne-Jones called it Vesper in his work-record but exhibited it as Evening. More recently it has been known as Hesperus or The Evening Star. Whatever its title, it belongs to a group of works of the 1870s in which the artist explored the idea of representing cosmic subjects by allegorical figures floating in the night sky.
