its actually kind of hilarious how terrible aki's parents are. yugioh fathers in general suck but hideo izayoi is so incompetent it loops back around to being hilarious
"yusei, you must help our daughter! After a lifetime of neglecting her, not supporting her when her powers went out of control, calling her a monster and physically abusing her, she joined a cult and is now in a coma! where did I go wrong!?"

I have two submissions: Hideo Izayoi (or Mr Izinski, whatever his name is, Akiza's dad) from 5Ds and Kiyoshi Kogami.from VRAINS and for basically the same reason: they're horrible fathers. Kiyoshi at least gets called out by the narrative to some extent but Ryoken never stops following his father's orders, even after death, which leaves Ryoken's character arc incomplete. Not to mention that while the extent of Kiyoshi's neglect/abuse of his son is never covered, the fact that Ryoken was willing to sacrifice himself and everyone he loves to fulfill his father's wishes with the Tower of Hanoi implies it was pretty awful. Kiyoshi is also just horribly stupid and this stupidity is the entire catalyst of VRAINS so he's extremely frustrating. Oh yeah, and he tortured six year olds for months on end.
And Akiza's father single-handedly derailed Akiza's entire character arc by turning it into "oh she just needs to forgive her abusers because they said sorry D:" That is not how that works. She shouldn't have pushed by the narrative or Yusei to forgive someone who explicitly neglected and abused her. I don't care how sorry he acted. She wasn't obligated to forgive him and the fact that the narrative pushes her to do so in order to heal sickens me. I know that's the writing but I wholly pin all this blame on Akiza's father. (This whole thing is slightly less horrible in the dub but only slightly. It's still an incredibly harmful message.)
both added!

Yes, I started Chapter 3 with fanservice-y shirtless Crow. Why? Because I could.
WARNINGS: Brief mention of organ harvesting. Crow's potty mouth.
Today had started out on the good side of average.  There’d been enough food for everyone in the house to have a good breakfast, and afterwards Crow had decided to take advantage of the nice weather to give Blackbird a long-overdue cleaning and wax.  So he’d stripped down to his oldest pair of shorts, hauled out the hose, and got to work.  The kids helped, as far as that went.  Mostly they just gleefully ran through the stream of water and played in the soapy mud puddles that were forming on the ground.  But this was Satellite, where fun things happened once in a blue moon.  Crow wasn’t about to begrudge them that.
He was finishing up with the rinsing when he first became aware of the shadow above him.  At first he thought it might be a storm cloud moving in, and regretted his bad timing.  Then, when the hose (and its background noise) had been shut off and he was trying to dry his D-Wheel off quickly before the rain started, he realized that clouds didn’t generally make a whirring sound.
He looked up when the kids started shouting and pointing, quickly realizing two things.  First off, the sky was still completely clear.  Secondly, there was a helicopter hovering right above them.
What the hell was this about?  Was this some kind of Security bullshit again?  He hadn’t even done anything wrong for, like, two weeks now!  He activated his duel disk and kept the other hand on his deck.  No matter how outnumbered he might be, he was willing and prepared to fight to the death to protect his kids…
…And then the helicopter door slid open.  Someone very familiar who was definitely not part of Security waved at him and called out, “Crow, it’s just me!”
“…Oh.  Hi Yusei.”  He immediately shut the disk off again.  “Sweet ride you got there; are you sick of the new and improved Yusei Go already?”
“Can’t hear you!” Yusei shouted in response.  Yeah, the noise of the chopper engine was making conversation a little difficult.
“HOW ABOUT YOU JUST LAND?” Crow yelled at the top of his lungs, cupping his hands around his mouth as a makeshift megaphone.  He gestured at the ground in case they still couldn’t hear him.  Thankfully they got the idea.
As Yusei disembarked and let the excited, mud-spattered kids run all over him, Crow began, “Sorry we don’t have a fancy landing pad…”  He broke off when he realized that Yusei had not been the only passenger in that helicopter.
“Crow Hogan, I presume?” another man asked while stepping out of the craft himself.  He was maybe late forties, had a beard, and was attired in a nice suit.  Crow thought that maybe he’d seen him on TV once or twice before.  He had “Tops” written all over him, and looked like the type of guy who would normally be content to pretend that people like Crow didn’t exist.
He replied, “Yeah, that’s me.  What about it?”
The man inclined his head.  “My name is Izayoi Hideo, and I need you and your friend Yusei to accompany me to Neo Domino.  We’ll explain on the way; we don’t have much time.”
Um.  This situation had gone from “weird” to “absolutely fucking bizarre” in just a few seconds.  Part of him wanted to say “No way” and get back on with his day.  You never trusted anybody from Neo Domino; everyone in Satellite knew that.  They almost invariably wanted to do a photo op so they could brag to their friends about the charitable work they did, and that was if they weren’t there to kidnap you and harvest your organs…
But then again, Yusei seemed to be okay with all this, and he had always been an excellent judge of character.
“I dunno.  Are you sure he’s on the up and up?” he asked the guy who had been like a brother to him for the past eleven years.
Yusei nodded.  “I’m sure.”
There was no way out of this without acting like a giant asshole, was there?
“Just gimme a few secs to put a shirt on,” he said, rushing off without waiting for an answer.
Once he’d gotten changed back to his regular clothes, and washed his face, and made sure he had deodorant on, and even made an attempt at combing his hair, he went back outside, where no one had moved.
“Ginga, you put Blackbird in the garage and then make sure everyone gets to Martha’s house,” he ordered.  Looks like there wasn’t going to be any waxing done today after all, and he’d have to hose the D-Wheel off again later on.
“Hey!  Why’s Ginga in charge?” demanded Daichi.
“Because he’s the oldest and I say so,” said Crow, in a tone that he hoped would brook no further argument…and also not quite believing that he was using that frustrating tactic that Martha would spring on them all the time.  “Now go.”

I Have Some Concerns About Aki’s Arc
Okay let me clear: Aki has been nothing but excellent from the moment she was introduced. She’s my favourite character and just aspect of 5Ds so far. She’s a badass but she’s also very emotionally damaged and repressed due to brainwashing and a dark past, that I inwardly theorised for a while could’ve been due to abuse. She’s honestly very relatable to me personally.
Tumblr media
And that’s why I’m saying this now: the way Aki’s parents were handled is problematic to put it lightly. First off, her mother barely exists. Her mother might as well not exist: the narrative would’ve been stronger if Aki had a single father, thus her only family/positive connection early in life who never had any time for her as a child and later in life unintentionally abused her. It would’ve also been stronger if Aki’s father realised himself that it was his fault Aki turned out the way she did rather than his wife having to be the one to tell him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(This moment really makes it feel like Aki’s father doesn’t even fully think he’s to blame when the way Aki’s backstory is framed makes it abundantly clear Aki’s father is to blame for a lot of what happened to her psychologically.)
Second, and more importantly, Aki’s father abused her. It was clearly unintentional, the narrative makes that clear, but not all abuse is intentional. Some abusers believe that they’re right to treat their victim the way they do and in some aspects, Aki’s father does believe he’s in the right. He believed he was right to fear his daughter even when she was a small child, he believed his job was more important than her (or at least his actions hammer in this point) and that he was right to never make any time for her, thus making Aki feel emotionally isolated from a young age. Aki’s father makes it clear he never meant to hurt her, and some of it wasn’t even his fault like Aki assuming her parents were happier without her just from seeing them through the window and some of the times he’s legitimately too busy to spend time with her, but intent does not matter. Whether he meant to or not, he still abused her. He emotionally neglected her, he called her a monster, and treated her like one by further distancing himself from her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I haven’t yet addressed the fact that he HITS her.
Tumblr media
Sure we only know for sure it happened once and he regretted it but you can’t say he did that by accident. You don’t accidentally slap someone across the face, that’s an intentional choice. He could’ve left the room if he was that pissed off. There’s no excuse for that moment.
Whether he meant to or not, Aki’s father was abusive and both the audience and the character himself know for a fact Aki internalised what he said and did to her:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I sound negative but so far all of this is actually really good writing. Besides Aki’s mother’s lack of involvement, this backstory perfectly explains how Aki ended up the way she did, and makes her even more sympathetic and relatable than she was before. What bothers me about this narrative is its resolution. As I discussed, Aki was abused by her father, and while her mother is never shown directly abusing her, she did nothing to stop it. Yeah, that could be due to the narrative being sexist but my point is this: Aki is justified in not wanting to be around her parents. Even if the abuser regrets their actions, the victim is in no way obligated to forgive them or even give them the time of day, much less let them back into their life.
So why the holy hell is the narrative not just pushing but forcing Aki to forgive her parents?! It’s not just Aki’s father pleading Aki to forgive her, that would be one thing, but both Yusei and the narrative itself act like Aki needs to forgive her parents in order to heal:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(This phrasing in particular really gets under my skin. “Incorrect hatred?!” Sure, ‘hate’ might be a bit far but Aki has every right to be upset with them! THEY HURT HER. It’s not your place to tell her that she’s wrong for being upset!)
Also, before you comment, for the love of god do NOT say “because it’s Japanese culture! They believe in more traditional family values!” Traditions that hurt people have no place in modern society and need to GO. This is just wrong. And harmful. Not all abusers regret what they’ve done. Making amends isn’t always possible, even in cases where there is regret, and it shouldn’t be treated as the end all be all solution. Of course I’m happy Aki was able to come to a place where she could forgive her parents but it never should’ve been the point of her redemption. The point should’ve been for her to move on from that resentment/trauma and not let it define her and that shouldn’t require making amends, otherwise many of us would never move on…
If the narrative wanted Aki and her parents to reconcile, it should’ve come after this. They either shouldn’t have been there or Aki shouldn’t have been forced to forgive them the way she was. That’s a harmful thing to enforce.
For a quick example of this idea being done right (within Yugioh, and I’m sorry to do this again if you’re getting sick of hearing me gush over how good GX is but this instantly came to mind), Judai wasn’t forced or even expected to forgive Yubel, not by the narrative, not by any other characters, not even by Yubel themself. It was a choice Judai made all on his own. And it wasn’t a last resort either. Judai was about to win the duel, as proven by this line:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Judai was about to win. He instead chose to activate Super Polymerization and fuse their souls. It was his choice to forgive Yubel and repair their relationship (that Judai was barely remembering existed) and the narrative treated it as such:
Tumblr media
I know these are two very different relationships: Judai and Yubel’s being romantic and Aki and her parents’ being familial, but you should never be required to make amends with someone, regardless of whether you’re related by blood. At the end of the day, blood ties don’t automatically make a relationship meaningful or positive. If someone is hurting you, you have every right to cut them out of your life and never look back, and no one should ever tell you otherwise.
I’ll admit Aki’s narrative isn’t the worst version of this I’ve seen. Her father feels legitimately regretful and actually worked to earn his daughter’s forgiveness.
Tumblr media
(This moment is really powerful and did legitimately hit me in the feels)
Really, I have nothing against the fact that she forgave her parents in the end. That was her choice to make and her parents showed they were deserving of that forgiveness. My problem is that it felt like the narrative and Yusei, a character within that narrative who has absolutely nothing to do with this situation and shouldn’t have a say in it whatsoever, were forcing her to that conclusion. It’s something that prevented me from feeling the weight of the moments that actually did work, which sucks because with some tweaking, this could’ve easily been one of the most powerful arcs in all of Yugioh, and I know to some people it still is. I assure you I’m not looking for reasons to dislike 5Ds. I desperately want to see it as the masterpiece others see it as, but with a storyline as intense and personally familiar as this, they needed to get it completely right or not try it at all. I can’t accept only halfway with something like this.
It’s honestly a shame is a shame because this story came so close to true greatness. I mean, just look at it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aki’s power being symbolized by these rose petals, something you’d normally think of as beautiful causing all this destruction and pain, her range of expressions as her mask of sadism slips off to show that she’s truly just a scared child who only ever wanted acceptance, the dialogue feels very grounded and real and the way the actors deliver their lines really does sell it. I really did mean it when I said a simple rewrite could’ve fixed all my issues with this. It was so close to being something truly fantastic. Maybe the following episodes will change things but as of episode 41, I’m disappointed.

Mooore questions (!) (I swear these will be the last questions of the day XD) -what did Aki's parents feel about all the things (propose, wedding, granchildren) (I mean.... Who doesn't want Yusei as a Husband? He's perfect) -Did Yusei ever mention about his father? (I have this headcannon that when Kaori e Hikaru were little, they could see their grandpa, just like Yusei in the anime)
Aki’s parents were hella thrilled when Yusei and Aki starting dating! Her parents were already secretly planning their goddamn wedding before Yusei was seriously starting to consider it.
Yusei had asked her parents to marry Aki and boy were they thrilled. So when the engagement was announced they didn’t have to do much of wedding plaalnning, since her parents pulled out their binder and were like “so we planned everything like months ago and so I think we’re ready to go.” Aki was mortified, Yusei thought it was absolutely hilarious.
It was actually Aki’s parents that brought up the prospect of grandchildren. (I mentioned that whole saga in a previous ask). So when Kaori was born, they absolutely spoiled their little granddaughter and later their grandson.
As for Yusei’s dad, the kids don’t know a whole lot about him since there was only so much information that Yusei knows about his dad. The kids are aware of zero reverse and how their grandfather tried to prevent it but there’s only so much they know.
As for seeing him, neither of the kids see him since at the end show he faded away never to be seen again. But they do have they old photo of the Fudo Grandparents with baby Yusei in the house!

Day 5 (July 11th): Bloom of the Black Rose
Aki Izayoi/Akiza Izinski is by far my all time fave Yugioh female Protagonist no one can change my mind otherwise. Hope you enjoy!
Aki was standing in shock, her body cold on the inside her hand still outstretched her eyes still focused on her father Hideo Izayoi who stood heavily injured by her powers, before slowly dropping to his knees and falling to the ground. “P-Papa…” She choked softly. She slowly began shaking her head, tears streaming down her cheeks.
“No… No… NOOOOO!”
Aki eruptly sat up from her bed panting heavily, her eyes filled with tears covering her mouth hoping to hold in her choked sobs and catch her breath. Once she slowly calmed down she looked at the clock on her bedside reading 3 in the morning. She wiped away her tears with a sniff. I-I shouldn’t be thinking like this… Papa is fine now and so is mama… She thought. They’re ok, we’re ok…. I’m…
“Aki?” Aki looked up surprised to see her parents slowly coming into the room both with worried expressions. “Are you alright sweetie?” Setsuko asked worried.
“Y-Yeah I’m fine mama.” Aki quickly assured, hoping to wipe her face.
“Aki have you been crying?” Setsuko gasped, quickly walking to her daughter’s bedside. “Oh sweetie, did you have a nightmare?”
Aki was silent, unsure what to say as Hideo walked over to gently wipe away her tears. “Aki you don’t have to tell us if you don’t want to.” He told her gently. She quickly shook her head, clutching her blanket tightly. Her parents loved her, she knew this now she knew they wouldn't judge her now.
“I… I was dreaming of, back in the hospital… When I had dueled Yusei after he woke me from my slumber.” She said softly, no doubt surprising them. “And… I had launched my attack with Black Rose Dragon and papa… And papa he had…”
Aki felt the tears come again feeling herself shake when suddenly she felt arms wrap around her in a warm embrace and she looked up at her parents both tearfully hugging her. “Oh Aki… It's ok now mama and papa are here now.” Setsuko assured.
“Know we love you Little Rose we’re right here.” Hideo added.
“B-But I had hurt you papa.” Aki hiccupped.
“Compared to the hurt I had dared to put you through, my own daughter I could never hold that against you.” Hideo told her. Aki cried holding onto her parents tightly as they held her, all 3 crying of their pasts yet grateful they managed to become a family again.

Day 2 (July 8th): Sink or Sail
The ship I would sail and sink for without a doubt is Faithshipping with Yusei and Aki/Akiza so hope you all enjoy this fic for them!
“Oh Aki you look absolutely beautiful.” Aki smiled at her mother as she looked at her reflection, her burgundy hair held by the elegant veil that rested on her head that matched the beautiful white wedding gown she wore. “She’s right Aki when Yusei sees you he’ll be speechless.” Carly added cheerfully.
“That’ll be a sight to see.” Misty smiled.
“Thank you, all of you.” Aki smiled softly. “I’m a little nervous.”
“Don't worry once you see Yusei you’ll be fine.” Misty assured with a gentle smile. Then there was a knock at the door opening to show Aura popping in.
“Everyone is ready for you.” She told them.
“Here Aki.” Setsuko smiled, handing Aki her bouquet of red roses.
“Thank you mama.” Aki thanked, kissing her mother’s cheek. Aki followed them out as Aura gave her a hug.
“I’m really glad for you and Yusei.” Aura told her, before moving to face Aki. “Be happy both of you, ok?”
“Of course. Sister.” Aki grinned. Aura laughed as the 2 hugged again before Aki walked up to Hideo who had a proud smile upon seeing his daughter.
“Are you ready Little Rose?” He asked softly, raising his arm to her.
“Ready papa.” Aki nodded with a smile, taking his arm. Once they heard the music begin the doors were opened as they walked down the aisle. Aki looked forward, seeing Yusei standing at the altar in his tux with Jack and Crow both acting as his best man. Once she saw her husband to be her nerves melted instantly no doubt her eyes mirroring the love she saw in his. Friends and family alike sat in the audience as Aki and Hideo reached Yusei the priest speaking. “Who here gives the bride away?” He asked.
“That will be me.” Hideo spoke. Aki hugged Hideo with a smile before Hideo shook Yusei’s hand and took a seat as Aki handed her bouquet to Misty and took Yusei’s hands as the priest spoke.
“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to witness the holy matrimony between Yusei Fudo and Aki Izayoi. Their bond and love transcends even the darkest of times and have shown through and through.” The priest smiled. “And now the bride and groom shall speak with their vows. Aki-san.” Aki nodded, taking a deep breath Yusei gently gripped her hands in support making her smile softly before she spoke.
“Yusei when we first met it wasn’t in the best of circumstances especially when I saw your own Mark of the Crimson Dragon and I wanted to be as faraway from you as possible. But you wouldn’t let that happen. You wouldn’t turn away even when I had hurt you, caused so much destruction, and scared so many people, you still didn't give up on me. You saw what was behind the mask, you saw the real me and wanted to help me. And you did and I will always be grateful for that.” Aki smiled up at the one who had changed her life as she went on. “And as days went by as we spent time together as friends I realized my feelings for you went beyond friendship. Your kindness, compassion, and caring nature that accepts everyone. How could I not fall in love with you? We’ve been through so much together and even now I can’t wait to spend our futures together.”
Everyone smiled by Aki’s words, a few tearing up, Yusei smiling fondly at Aki eyes filled with emotion. “Yusei-san.” The priest spoke up. Yusei nodded as he began to speak.
“Aki when we had met I had wondered about you since you shared the same Mark as Jack and I did. Yet while others had seen you as a witch I could only see someone hurting deep inside. I had seen someone who had experienced so much sadness that I wanted to help you and see the girl behind the mask. And who I saw was what I had known. A beautiful, kind, and gentle girl who only wishes to be accepted in the world for who she is, powers and all. And I was truly glad and honored to be your friend.” Yusei smiled, gently stroking Aki’s cheek while she blushed at his words. “Never will I regret reaching out to you for it gave me the chance to fall in love with you. It took us some time to get here at this moment. But our bond allowed us to connect once again and now we stand together and onwards toward our future.”
Aki smiled tearfully at Yusei accepting a tissue from Carly and dry her eyes as the priest spoke. “If there is anyone who thinks these two should not be wed, speak now or forever hold your piece.” He spoke. Obviously no one spoke a word as the priest nodded turning to Rua.
“The rings then.” He said. Rua grinned and nodded giving the rings to Yusei and Aki who took them and smiled their thanks at him as the priest spoke.
“Now then do you Yusei Fudo take Aki Izayoi as your lawfully wedded wife? To commit yourself to her happiness as a person? To love, honor, and trust her in sickness and health, for richer or poorer, for better or worse, as long as you both shall live?”
“I do.” Yusei spoke, slipping the ring on Aki’s finger.
“And do you Aki Izayoi take Yusei Fudo as your lawfully wedded husband? To commit yourself to his happiness as a person? To love, honor, and trust him in sickness and health, for richer or poorer, for better or worse, as long as you both shall live?”
“I do.” Aki smiled through tears, slipping the ring on Yusei’s finger.
“Then by the power vested in me by the State of Japan, I pronounce to you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Yusei cupped Aki’s face with the utmost care before gently kissing her. Everyone clapped and cheered happy for the now married couple.
