Spoiler free but the weird thing is I love every character in FE3H. I never expected that. Like I love Seteth and Manuela, both of whom I thought I’d hate. Hubert was surprisingly easy to love despite his cold exterior and Machiavellian attitude about Edelgard’s ambitions. Like this game is so good at catching you off guard. It’s the definition of good writing being able to truly humanize everyone, even the ones on the bad side of your narrative.

Like okay, so they sacrificed the side cast (mostly the monstrous villains, noble extras, etc) into being basically non-characters. it’s worth it if every single one of the students and faculty are this fleshed out with interesting dynamics with each other, hidden sides of them that ACTUALLY GET EXPLORED (take notes Atlus), and reasons for who they are / motives for what they do.

It’s such good writing. It swings a little cheesy sometimes, but these are like 17-20-year-old kids. That’s natural. 

It is crazy how I could go on and on about just one or two characters (and I have) when they’ve all got that kind of depth to them.

As an aside, I love how some of the supports of people from completely different houses weaves a backstory narrative. like

Like, Edelgard talking about how Ferdinand’s Dad had her and all her siblings chained up to a dungeon and experimented on until she saw each and every one one of her siblings fall to madness or disease was horrifying, but not as much as the moment when she reveals it was to give her a second crest.

There’s only one other character with more than one crest.

Build support with Lysithea, and she’ll tell you of how her family, House Ordelia, fucked up and gave medical aid to a rebellion within the Empire. As punishment, the Empire took her and all the other children in their land and were subjected to horrible experiments. All of the children bar Lys died, while Lys survived with white hair (just like Edie), a dramatically shortened lifespan (five or so years left), and two crests.

The imperial scientists crowed about their success... and then suddenly let her go. She thinks they lost interest in her and left her with a death sentence as a cruel joke, but if you’ve done Edie’s support that’s when you realize they used Lysithea as a mere guinea pig.

Once they knew it could be done, they moved on to the royal family.

Also my Japanese is a bit rusty, but the Shiho part I suspect is a dream world thing. They're talking about winning a tournament, and Shiho asks her not to exaggerate. Also the interaction with other students was just an excuse for one of them to call her a "good wife"? Idk why knowing how to efficiently clean up garbage makes her one or why that's necessary, but yeah this trailer pissed me off. Ann was done so wrong...

I’m not surprised, sadly :/

Supposedly cause a ‘good wife’ needs to be a good cleaner, a good cook, a good mother etc... though I always found it ... awkward...? ... when teens talk about that, especially if they are nowhere near graduating high school. Just ... not my cup of tea.

I hope the other trailers will be better, to say the least. I want a least good moments or something, you know?

To be honest, while playing through P5, my mind was focusing on my fanfic as well and I couldn’t see Akira and Makoto getting together. My fanfic kinda clouded me. ^.^”

Now this is a ship I got behind playing P5, I like how Ryuji helped Makoto grow in the story and it was kinda sweet, if stupid, for him to jump in front of the cab just to shorten the time it would take to get to her. I think around that time is when it started to show.

This was my first P5 ship during my playthrough, it faltered a bit once Makoto showed up but it still has it’s merits.

THEY’RE SO CUTE! I love that shes older and shorter than him, and he’s so caring to her even when he’s angry and she’s constantly worrying about him and thinking of him when he’s fighting and she cradled him after the battle with the Lure Hollow in the rain. She’s really cute and so proud of her art that she smiles when she shows it to him like she wants him to appreciate it too. Like he should

Just as an extension of what you said about Makoto, I love her a lot, because I relate in a way to her personally. I'm in a PhD program and was valedictorian in high school, so academically I know what her life is like. At the same time, I have gotten into a lot of trouble with my family and work over impulsive and poorly made decisions. I've been fired before for having an ideological disagreement with a boss haha (back when I was copyeditor for a journal). I like seeing strong women who ...

No, that makes total sense! That’s definitely totally in line with Makoto, and it’s one of the things I admire about her. In a situation with so much pressure on her to succeed, she decides she’s not going to sacrifice her principals even if it means making it harder for her to advance (Like when she finally stands up to the principal - she needs the letter of recommendation, but she decides she doesn’t want to get it by going against her own ideals and pursuing the thieves.) Being able to stand up for yourself and what you believe in is it’s own kind of strength. I couldn’t do it, that’s for sure.

Hey thanks for your analysis of Kasumi's character design. I was a little salty about her and the information released, bc I initially thought she was just another fanservice waifu for the harem, but I like the extant elements of protagonism put into her character. Now I'm head over heels unable to sleep thinking about what exactly she would represent and how. BUT ANYWAY before I digress: thank you!

You are welcome, I am glad you like my ramblings about her!

To be honest, I still don’t really like her design, especially her Phantom Thief outfit, I get it, she’s a gymnast and it’s a leotard and it’s not really meant to be sexualized but ughh. If the canon did not mean it as such, the fandom is gonna (and there are some really nasty people in the P5 fandom, come on guys, these characters are all minors!)

If she’s really meant to be some sort of dual protagonist or something is still think her design (especially hair) is too similar to Minako from P3, the male protagonists all get their own hair color and hair style and she’d not? Meh. Okay, Maya from P2 EP looks very different, but still.

Also Kasumi is a Joker fangirl (she even calls him senpai in the trailer), which is also kinda meh in my opinion, like do we really need a girl just to idolise him?

My overall opinion on her is still very conflicted at this point. I really hope she gets a good story, and not just something along the lines of ‘oh she likes Joker, so that’s why she looks like him’

let’s talk about new characters/OC’s in persona 5 royal.

now allow me to preface by saying that literally all of my knowledge on this topic come from other people talking about other aspects of this topic most notably the new girl’s design, I am also not Japanese and my knowledge of culture customs (and my ability to spell names)  is very limited. finally I am amateur fan fiction writer with little more then a rule of thumb to go on so with all that said this is a discussion so please no flames. 

ok down to business, my rule of thumb when creating/adding a character to a story is to ensure that they add something to the world they are being added to.

a couple of examples from my own fanfic’s 

in the Robber: the title character fills a highly specialized role no other Merc does as well as having his own item and skill set that gives him a specialized role the idea being that if he was added to the game right then there would be a role for him.

Rip hunter from the Young Justice AU: aside form me being a sucker for time travel the idea behind adding him was to create conflict and a member of the team that already knows everything but can’t act on it fro the greater good. that keeps secrets, but not for the sake of keeping them he is very torn and the team wants the truth but know that learning it would cause more trouble then it’s worth. 

and finally most relevant is a Persona character sheet i made for kicks for if i was going to add a character, this one is sadly not published anywhere but if you are interested let me know, anyway back on topic. this person would be an american (because i dont know anything about Japan so creating a character i’m closer to would be easier) his code name is Atlantic (so i will call him that from then on) anyway Atlantic joins that Team in Hawaii and his effect on the story is several fold, number 1: international Attention, the phantom thieves will have changed the heart of someone in a different country causing even more attention to be drawn to them (and shujin) number 2: it will lead to the rise of a group of copycats (who cant use the meta verse) sending out calling cards to different targets then the thieves (acting kinda like Medjed). and finally the FBI start investigating the Phantom thieves later joining the SIU task force. The FBI are also used by the gang And Sae to arrest Shido and to protect Ren/Akira (the cops wont kill the turned in leader with the FBI and subsequently every international law enforcement agency through them watching) which causes Aketchi to have to go through with his frankly terrible (IMO) plan to fake Ren’s suicide. 

now that was long and i don’t have everything laid out neatly (because i haven't figured out everything out yet) but the point i am trying to get to in my own ranting way is that the new girl doesn't really have a spot to fill. let me explain. 

Persona 5 is paced beautifully with everyone joining at a time that makes sense (although i do maintain that if they wanted to change contain the plot twist better they should have switched Akechi’s and makoto’s joining order but i’m getting off topic) Ryuji and Ann Rebel against  the person who wronged them in school, Yuske his corrupt mentor, Makoto an angry Mob boss (this one doesn't fit as well) Futuba against her own sense of self hatred and mental illness. Haru against her overbearing father.  

they all awaken in moments of thematic importance to there character. 

Ren awakens as he can;t stand around and watch as someone is being hurt

Ryuji after realizing that he may as well embrace what people say about him because it doesn't matter anyway.

and so on and so forth. 

so i ask where exactly does Kasumi (who’s name i now know thanks to @highpriestessjohanna) fit in. where does she awaken? 

either she is here from the start which i feel for me anyway might destroy the pacing of the game because again there is how the OG four wind up joining.

Ren and Ryuji (chance does them dirty and they wind up in the castle) 

Ann only Joins after following the two trouble makers who publicly threatened Komoshida and she only did that because her best friend in the entire world was driven to attempt suicide and she wanted on there plan.

where exactly would the new girl fit in?

and it’s something i honestly don’t have an answer to.
