CDL legislation eases career path for commercial drivers
I would be curious to know how many hours were previously required for the CDL students. What educational requirements have they removed? Hopefully nothing that has to do with safety. But there is a proven connection between how educated an individual is in their current field to how successful those individuals are at their jobs.
I report 2-4 safety recalls a day on my blog. I read about planes falling apart in the sky. Have we forgotten that we can't have quality operations that are safe without proper training and quality standards?
I would love to hear your thoughts!

TW!: Mentions of death (adult and child), car crashes, and fires. Read with caution.
Guys, due to my occupation and living situation (hoping soon to be changed), I have driven on a singular highway everyday for the past 2 years. In these last TWO weeks, there have THREE semi fires, one turning into a HUGE field fire YESTERDAY! I passed by another car accident TODAY on my way home.
I have had to slam on my breaks to avoid head on collisions because people try to pass where it isn't safe or reasonable, I have been forced to the shoulder of the highway due to peoples' reckless driving. This highway ISN'T SAFE! I have seen people and children die on this road, and people still drive like god damn idiots.
I would like to say which highway but I'm pretty sure someone will find it out, and I don't want people knowing the area where I live, soooooo this is a PSA I guess.
Wear your seat belt, please just put it on. It saved my life, it will save yours. Be safe and reasonable while driving. Do not, for the love of your God, text and drive. Obey traffic laws! If it says "left hand lane passing lane only", listen and drive in the right hand lane unless you are passing. Do not attempt to pass unless it is legal and safe to do so. Don't speed, please, that speed limit is there for a REASON! Stop going 80 in a 65, there is no need to go that fast. I'm so tired of seeing people driving like fucking idiots, get hurt, or worse, die.

I know majority of people think “haha Nick does stupid shit and Judy has to keep him in control” which don’t get me wrong is a funny trope, but I like to think canonly it’s the opposite.
I’m not saying Judy does stupid shit on purpose or for no reason, but she is very case-focused and will stop at nothing to finish her job, even at the risk of her own safety. Girl puts her life on the line multiple times throughout the movie and arguably if it weren’t for Nick she would’ve ended up dead. He is much more concerned with their safety and making sure they both make it out okay from dangerous situations.
So yeah, Judy is just as capable of putting her life at risk, and Nick is the only one actively keeping her alive

in other news with This Fucking Week, my cousin (same side of the family) was in a nasty wreck on the highway - she's fine because her honda's crumple zone excelled at its job never listen to people who complain about how modern cars "aren't made like they used to" holy shit i saw the picture she'd be dead - and a total stranger stopped on the interstate outside a major city and sat with her, calmed her down, helped her call the police and get through the aftermath, then left without giving her any contact information or asking for any kind of reward
and it's a weirdly comforting dichotomy, reiterating my faith in people, against the ones who neglected my grandmother while she was desperately sick to the point that she might have died if i hadn't been there - another total stranger stopped her day and spent a significant amount of time out in the southern summer heat/humidity to comfort a young woman who had just survived a horrible wreck
just because she saw someone in need of support, and not even life support, "just" emotional support
it would have been easy for the aides to come in and give my grandmother water, and they didn't; it would have been easy for the lady to just keep driving, and she didn't
yeah, people can be awful, but they can also be really, really good, and that's something to hold onto

Hi. This is not proship related, but I know there's a fair few people following me, and I don't know who needs to hear this, but...
The bicycle is a FANTASTIC mode of transportation. It's a good source of exercise, it's ecologically friendly, it has a tiny ass footprint. If possible, you should 100% use your bicycle more. HOWEVER.
Please, for the love of fuck, wear reflective gear if riding at night. Wear bright clothes. Have lights on your bike. And most importantly...DONT FUCKING RIDE ON A HIGHWAY WITH NO SHOULDER.
Just nearly hit a biker in all black with no reflectives or anything on a highway with no lights. This highway had no shoulder, the lanes stretched from side to side. It was not biker safe. Fortunately, the person in front of me swerved, and I was able to also swerve. Less fortunately, there was a massive semi (towing another semi!) in the other lane who almost hit me.
We do, as a society, need to be more eco-friendly. But also, please, the highway is not meant for your bike. And riding without any thing protective puts everyone on the road in danger. I'm honestly fairly certain that that biker didn't make it through, because there were a lot of semis behind me and the highway had concrete barriers on each side.
Don't be stupid.
Please.

I came from companies that previously had intense safety programs where we did a lot of training. One of the things that stuck was this idea that I think originated with OSHA. You had levels of safety being more effective. A safety culture that is a mindset a group mindset that everybody participating bought into was the best, and you had engineering controls like hardware covering dangerous parts of a machine, detailed instructions on how to do a task, at the bottom, you had personal protective equipment. That bottom tier should be thought of his gloves and hardhat and goggles.
As I was driving yesterday, I wondered if this translates to other avenues of our lives and specifically industrial hygiene.
I wondered are there people who are driving cars now relying on the PPE? That is their seatbelts and airbags over the engineering controls such as the speed limit signs or the striping on the road? Over a culture that would suggest we are using a shared interface with very dangerous machines, and that we should be thinking about our fellows on the road?
And I wondered as a country where are we at as citizens? Are we assuming the PPE will save us instead of buying into a group culture that agrees we all have rights and want to mutually succeed? It seems like we’re losing the engineering control, which I think would’ve been Law and those involved in the enforcement of law.
It seems like the populists have managed to sell a lot of people on the idea that some fantastically imbued PPE will protect them better than adherence to engineering controls or acceptance of cultural outlooks of mutuality.
There has to be more ground between what I would suggest as a Japanese style monoculturalism, and an American style in individualism that we can agree on.
Thinking back to an old experiment done with children to suggest the downsides to hyper marketing products. Children were offered a choice at what was typically a time of day when they would be eating between a banana and a rock with a Shrek sticker. Many children went for the rock.
We’ve reached in moment where adults would choose a hardhat with MAGA iconography or some equally childish left wing sticker on it over making better decisions involving their skulls, or their neighbors, or their country.
