genshin oc redesign !! (2023 edition)

behold! an updated design of amika haider, my hijabi genshin oc from sumeru! it was almost two years ago that i sat down and went “hey wouldn’t it be fun to have a character with a hijab be from sumeru because of the cultural ties?” only to make this character, and though we did not end up getting a sumeru oc with a hijab, i find the sumeru cast to have a special place in my heart (and take up about 80% of it)

I imagine she'd definitely be a niqabi, since I can only name one niqabi superhero at the top of my head. It'd be so neat to see a niqabi superhero! For what I imagine she'd look like, I imagine she'd look similar to these redesigns I saw of this Marvel character named Dust. The redesigns were done by Sara Alfageeh. I loved her redesigns, if you get the time I'd recommend looking the redesigns up, they won't disappoint you. I'd love to create some positive hijabi and niqabi representation, plus I think I have a more clear idea of what her design would look like now that I have some references ready

New look for Junaid, decided he would be a masc hijabi. There is a man on Pinterest who does a lot of modest turban styles, so this was heavily referenced from him!

I want to redesign Scallop's clothes a bit too because he definitely gets his sense of cultural modesty from his Baba and Xochitl... And Junaid sews his own clothes so it would be easy for him to accommodate Scallop's desire to dress like his parents.

As a POC it was probably cringy or something for my friends but I was so fucking happy that there isn’t just like three POC and done. They had a Hijabi spider-women, Spider-man India’s redesign was actually not some shitty stereotype like his OG was and they gave his fighting style after one of the oldest martial arts??!!?

And omfg Hobie OMG! I grew up with punk rock and some metal music and he looks exactly like what I’m aiming for (I’m redoing my entire room so that means new clothes thank god I’m not to pleased with how I look) and he’s what my mom’s friends looked like and how she looked and he’s POC omg. ALSO for me at least I never really cared about POC representation as much as I do now (I cared but it wasn’t a big deal) because I grew up surrounded by POC and so many cultures from all over so I never noticed how lucky I was to be able to grow up with that norm but I moved last year and it’s like all of that went bye bye. Idk if this is the same theory as what I’m talking about but whatever. I think it’s called the yellow car theory when u get a yellow car u see yellow cars everywhere now because it’s now significant to you/what’s the norm for u it’s kinda like that. It’s just now the norm for is so little rep so for me to be so unbelievably happy when I see rep cuz it’s mostly bye bye in my life and honestly I’m trying so hard not to be shameful/embarrassed/upset of my life and culture but it’s just so isolated from me now that I feel I don’t even have a right to talk about it or be proud and happy about rep. It’s just weird but back to Spiderverse.

WIP: Redesigning Savannah Price because it's my comic and I wanted her hair to look better

DISCLAIMER: I am not Black or Qualified to style Black hair, so tell me if it's wonky or needs work

Anyway, I played the Sims 4, and I wanted to include sims characters in my comic. Savannah Price is one of them, and she and Amira Kahikina-the Hijabi on the left-she's Senegalese and Hawaiian. Amira and Savannah are classmates and are in the Computer Programming and Robotics club at Jerry Lawson High School (I wanted to call it Hanafuda, but Jerry Lawson feels more fitting given Non-Nintendo characters are students and staff. Jerry Lawson invented the gaming console.)

The one on the right has her hair in box braids and a sweatervest style school uniform. Her box braids are done up in a ponytail with a Playstation button print scrunchie and her edges are laid. She also has earrings that resemble Amethyst clusters from Minecraft.

The uniform is modeled after this one. JL High's current Prinicpal, Mz. Isabelle Shizue (yes from animal crossing), is colorblind and forgot to have a uniform designed, so she just put "wear a school uniform". In reality, I just have ADHD and I think a lot of manga artists can get sick of drawing the same uniform multiple times.

It consists of a white short-sleeve button down, cuffed plaid trousers, a beige sweatervest, a blue scarflike tie with stripes that match the sweatervest, white socks with a blue stripe at the ankle, and grey mary-janes. End of ID.]

She looks a bit younger when I drew her, and that's probably because I gave her a flatter nose because The Sims 4 doesn't have the flat noses that many East Asian and Black people tend to have. Not to mention she has lipstick here that I don't think she would wear evry day.

Also tried to make her and Amira have realistic-ish palms compared to what we see in the Sims games.

OC-Tober Day 4: Redesign

Li Yang

Since this is writing, not drawing, it doesn't exactly fit the prompt, but since Li is the equivalent to Countess Olivia in my modern-day Twelfth Night retelling Our Secret Souls, and since her concept has changed a decent amount since I first came up with her in seventh grade, I figure it's close enough.

Li is a junior and Business Management major at Illyria College, and specifically the residential assistant of Cant Hall. Before the events that lead up to the story, she was very much a golden girl, well-known and well-liked on campus, to the point that an unusually high amount of women-attracted people at Illyria College have at one point or another had at least a little bit of a crush on her--which is especially notable because she is a proud Muslim hijabi woman, meaning that these are necessarily on the basis of her personality and vibes rather than Horny.

Li is pretty religious, but she has some unusual interpretations of religious texts drawn from her own passion for studying them--a practice which started when she was a kid and trying to convince her parents to get a dog (they partially-genuinely used religious reasons to justify why they couldn't have one; it was partly religious but also they just didn't really want a dog), and, to this end, did a ton of research and made a powerpoint advocating for why it was ok for them to get a dog; she was so passionate that they ended up getting a dog.

Li generally had a very good relationship with her family for most of her life. Then, a year before the events of the book, her father died. Then, a little after, her older brother, her only sibling, died. The fallout from their deaths resulted in a rift between her and her mother, meaning she feels almost as if she has lost her entire family.

Li has been handling her grief very poorly--and even if she hadn't, like, half of her immediate family died, of course that would fuck you up--and has spiralled into depression. This has drained her energy to the extent that she's really not able to perform her RA duties properly, meaning most of it is taken up by her friend Malachy Voll, either because she delegates it to him or because he fills in the gaps without asking.

Li is terrified of getting close to someone again and getting hurt by losing them, so she has resolved to only be close to the people she's already close to, and just never bond with anyone else. She's also just afraid of really being hurt in general, so she keeps up walls of cynical, sarcastic uncaring. Especially when trying actively to have a thick skin and to drive others away, she can be very insensitive to others and/or unaware of their feelings in her self-involvement. When her walls are pierced, she feels very deeply, hence why she tries to avoid it so much.

She's also in denial about being a lesbian, because her fear of getting hurt is a lifelong issue, and is convinced she's going to eventually get a crush on a man--she surely just hasn't found the right one yet. Besides, she's not focusing on that right now. 

Appearance-wise, Li is a 20-year-old Hui Chinese woman. She's rather pale, and has dark grey eyes. Her hair is a mixture of red and black*, and fairly long, but is usually not visible because she always wears a black headscarf, specifically in the al-amira style. She tends to wear fashionable but fairly generic loose black clothes. (The all-black is a fairly new development, and is mostly a mourning thing).

*I have no idea if there's a name for this, but one of my friends has hair that is naturally both a deep red and black, and I decided to give it to her

After the positive reaction to my Jasmine Redesign game, I decided to do the same for Princess Tiana! It's not that there's anything wrong with her design, I just think she's cute and wanted to draw her. This game includes a bunch of her canon dresses, a few modest redesigns, as well as original outfits. There's a selection of skin and eye colors, too, so you can create all sorts of characters.
