not really an ask but more so just a weird over the top expression post? it’s disgustingly personal but i’ve been thinking about telling you because?????? engngjghbggbb

so i’ve been kinda existing and looking at your work for quite some time. ever since the hikari yo flipnote back on sudo in i think it was 2017? and ever since i was hooked on your artwork and your animations. learning about hotarubitale and how someone was just making these things and having fun was so inspiring to me.

unfortunately i was kind of out of the undertale fandom at that time and i sort of just had you as an artist i liked to look at every now and again… and then you started getting back into errink and with that i discovered rsp and treehouse and i slowly started to look at your works again. rsp actually helped me process something in my life that i realized was a really shit situation… and i got out of it. treehouse has slowly been becoming a cute comfort to me as well. the cutlery animatic helped me process things in my life. i really loved how you explored niji’s grief in it and it was such a unique take on ink and RAAH!!

now i’m back at your blog, rereading rsp, rereading hotarubitale, looking at your art or your fun reblogs every now and it. just made me rediscover a lot of the joy i had in the undertale and by extension underverse lore again. all the things that you do to talk about your favorite little sanses and of course gin has made me really happy again? your art has inspired me and has taught me “it’s okay to draw the shit you like because someone’s gonna love it.”

when you reblogged your old comic about niji seeing hotarubitale again it sparked me to revisit my old aus i made when i was 12.., and now i’m recreating it, having fun, and im being a little goober imagining ink being all happy to see those dumb names getting a brand new fresh banger coat of paint

i sound borderline incoherent and i’m so sorry that im word vomiting to you at 2 am but i just really wanted to thank you for all these Feelings and for just doing what you do

oghhhhg...my god...... that hikari yo animation is so old, it's not even finished....... it always turns me into mush whenever anyone remembers me for my flipnotes and sudo, it holds a special place in my heart so it really means so much to me that you discovered me even that far back..... TL Notes:

[1] This note is about the title. Yes. The title. The original title is イメージノ (imeeji no / Of (the) Images). Kudos to the SB69 wiki that lists it as just "Images" in english. Elegant and Simple.

[2] the first in a handful of math terms used in this song. 周回 (shuukai) has many meanings. For this translation, in order to make it sound more natural and lyrical, I chose the meaning "orbit". Although I'm sure the original intent was the meaning "circumference"

[3] 底 (soko), I chose to translate as "bottom". The kanji can also mean base as in numerical bases and base as in the base of a geometrical shape. The latter meaning was probably the original intent

[4] 吹き荒れ (fuki are) means "to blow violently", referring to wind. I chose to translate it as "to storm through" because I wanted to carry the original implication of wind

[5] 斜め (naname). I translated it as "distorted", but it's more commonly used to describe something "diagonal" or "slanted"

[6] I translated 輝石 (kiseki) as "diamond" but it's actually pyroxene. But unfortunately there are no idioms about pyroxene, so I took some liberties. This word is also a pun for 奇跡 (also read kiseki) which means "miracle"

[7] This is gonna be a long one. 不満茸 (fuman dake) literally means "dissatisfaction mushroom". But you'll only see if after reading the lyrics. When you listen you'll assume the line is saying 不満だけ (fuman dake) which means "only dissatisfaction". So the line would mean, audibly, "burn down only the/your dissatisfaction".

[8] the mushroom pun works to serve the next line. ハイになって (high ni natte), which literally means "we become high". Because. Burning mushrooms. Haha. But I chose "euphoric". I hope the "drug" nuance was conveyed.

[9] 証明 (shoumei) means proof, but also means proof, as in a formal mathematical proof

[10] the verb 凪ぐ (nagu) means to become calm, or to die down. I chose "sea after a storm" to throw back to the "stroming through" line

[11] 所在なき泡 (shousai naki awa) means "bubbles with no place to belong". It has an ephemeral nuance the way bubbles pop when the water in them evaporate, hence my choice in translation.

[12] I translated both 思考 (shikou) and 思想 (shishou) as "thought", but they're different. 思考 (shikou) is "intellectual thought" and 思想 (shishou) is more like "ideas/ideology"

saki: (I was wondering what was going on, it appears Menou-san is having his photoshoot.)

menou: …Hm? So you’ve been watching me from over there have you?

saki: Excuse me, I was curious as to what was going on.

menou: Say, how did my poses look from your perspective?

saki: Well… I thought that they all had a different vibe, and that you really did seem like a different person each time.

HANANENE PLAYLIST!

 Ok so technically this is both Toilet Bound Hanako Kun and Hananene but the majority is Hananene so we are just gonna go with that. My best friend @thehopeelias got me thinking about this. VOICE Tour Tokyo ~ Quick live report Part 1

Hello everyone!

I have landed savely in Japan and last night I had the pleasure of attending Wakana’s Tokyo live. The last two days have been crazy as hell so I haven’t posted anything, sorry about that. I haven’t slept in what feels like forever so I am not sure how much sense I will be making but I wanna write a little report before all my memories fade away. After the Fukuoka live I might write another more detailed report but for now I wanna share my initial thoughts on the Tokyo concert. This is part 1 since I need to get to bed asap. Part 2 will follow at some point tomorrow.

Without further ado, let’s get to it 〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→

I met up with two friends at the venue around 11 am. That’s super early considering the merchandise sale wasn’t scheduled to start until 16:00. No one was there except for us. And literally, no one did arrive until much later (maybe 15:00 or so...). Anyways, it happened to be our lucky day. Since we had arrived so early, we got to meet Wakana. Can you believe it? Yup, we met her!! Still completely in shock. It all happened so quickly and at first I didn’t even register it was her. Shame on me. My friends were also star-struck. It was quite the awkward moment actually.  We ran into her while she was taking some pictures of the venue. She had just finished and headed back inside when she walked past our little group. She greeted us and thanked us for coming. I don’t even know how to describe it but she was so freaking cute. I was dying, I didn’t know what to do. She was heading up the stairs - jumping like a little bunny actually - all the while waving at us. We waved back like our lives depended on it, Out of respect we kept our distance of course, we declared our undying love for her, wished her lots of luck and showed her our little “Wakana/若奈” sign which has been handed down from fan to fan all across the country. Wakana seemed quite excited when she saw it. Here’s a picture of a bunch of us later in the day.

Now it has become my duty to bring it to Fukuoka. I am really nervous about that. Anyways, here’s Wa-chan being cute in her little striped dress. I am so freaking glad we decided to turn up early. Best decision ever. Didn’t win the backstage tour but this was still a special moment. So happy!

Once it was time to buy the live goods, I decided to get the pamphlet, the tote bag, a t-shirt, the Kinmokusei towel, the thermos bottle, the keyholder and the shark-sake set. I also got a bunch of little presents and snacks from some of the Kala-fans I met. A fellow fan was kind enough to give me one of the clearfiles he got during the Toki Wo Koeru Yoru ni release event. So happy about that. I will be buying the single and album at the upcoming Fukuoka live to get those freaking posters. I need those posters in my life XD

Now let’s get to the live. Some general thoughts before I focus on each song (which will follow in part 2). I had a seat in the middle of the second row (!!) so Wakana was pretty much right in front of me. Waaaahhh! So lucky! These days I feel like they are giving out really good tickets to fan club members. That was never the case back in the Kalafina days. The venue was mostly filled up except for the top floor. I have mentioned it before but I will say it again, there were a ton of cameras and Wakana cofirmed during the live that we would get a release soon. So everyone, celebrate!! Our first Wakana home video release! BANZAI!! And what a great release it will be. Overall it was an amazing concert, a must-watch for every Wakana fan. Not a lot of action, for the most part Wakana was swaying gently on stage, once in a while she would walk from side to side and flap her skirt. There was a bit of action during Hard Rain, Kaze ni Naritai and Kimi Dake no Stage. The only time fans stood up was during Musunde Hiraku and even then a majority (myself included) remained seated. Just like her album, the concert was quite understated which is not a bad thing in my opinion but many of you might not like that.

Wakana did great, she was in good shape as far as I could tell, she didn’t struggle on the high notes (in fact, she sounded PERFECT during some of these high notes), she didn’t seem out of breath and she only started sweating a bit towards the end. Her microphone settings were a little off though, her voice was VERY loud at times. I guess it had to be that way because the band was super loud too. During certain songs it was more obvious than during others. The beginning of the concert (Yakusoku no Yoake) was particularly loud - bordering on too loud if you ask me but it got a lot better as the live continued. Bear in mind though that I was suffering from a lack of sleep at that point so I might have been a little too sensitive. At any rate, loudness is nothing that can’t be fixed with a bit of studio magic.

Since there were so many cameras Wakana was super nervous. I wanted to go up on stage and hug her. She struggled quite a bit during the MCs, there were some awkward pauses where she didn’t know what to say but hey, no one minded. Everyone was just like, “awwww, so cute!!” I wonder if they will keep all the MCs on the DVD/BD...? I hope they will, they made the live so much more intimate and real.

As for outfits, Wakana was wearing three different dresses. All of them screamed ”WAKANA” to me, undoubtedly they were chosen by her, they all looked like she would wear them on her off-days as well. Long, loose, crazy designs. Most people will probably dislike them because they were a little out there and not exactly flattering but hey, to each their own. Personally, I loved all three of them and I know Wakana feels comfy in dresses like that so that makes me super happy.

The first one was salmon coloured/orange-y, it had a very loose cut and looked extra-comfy. It stopped around her ankles and she was wearing flat roman-style sandals. I think it’s the first time we are seeing her wear flats on stage. I am happy Wakana focuses more on comfort these days. As a result, her presence on stage feels different too. I don’t know how to explain it but her presence feels more “natural” I guess. The skirt had a fancy design with many colourful layers and whenever she walked around on stage she would flap that skirt like nobody’s business. It looked really pretty and colourful. At its base it was a shiny yellow and then it had all these different colours layered on top of it. The second dress had a very flattering cut compared to the first one and it showed off her collarbones (which is always nice). Some people might be thrown off by the many different patterns but I think it looked quite cool XD. The last dress is the one from her album cover-shoot. Super lovely. The sleeves were slightly altered though. The dress doesn’t have long sleeves anymore. She wore some hair-accessories that looked a lot like the ones from Kalafina’s 10th Anniversary Live encore, the vibe was similar, I think they might have actually re-used those accessories. Anyways, she looked like an angel (which was quite fitting for Hikari Furu I think).

Setlist (Hanamizuki and oblivious were not part of the original setlist) My personal highlights were: Hard Rain, Kioku no Hito, Kaze ni Naritai, Hotaru, Jidai, Mizu no Akashi, Toki wo Koeru Yoru ni, Kinmokusei, Hikari Furu, Ai no Hana, Ato Hitotsu. Yakusoku no Yoake was a little too loud for my taste but in general the performance was amazing and I guess it belongs in my little fave-line-up. The song was changed slightly for the live performance so that made it even better.

Wakana Live Tour 2019 ~Voice~

First of all, I’m sulking because my Blurray is still not here. I was hoping it would arrive on Friday but it didn’t. And I can’t wait another 2 days to watch the concert. So here I am. Here are my thoughts:

The orange dress is unflattering. lol. I like the 2nd and 3rd dress tho. Her hair in braids is nice.  

The stage design reminds me of a wire whisk for baking.

Yakusoku No Yoake. I have high expectation of this song because it’s my favorite in the album. Its a good performance. But that’s all it was, it didn’t blow me away. I dont know why tho.

Kaze ni Naritai. I love this, its fun and I can see Wakana enjoying it. She’s like a child in here. 

Kimi dake no stage. Amazing! I love her energy in this song. Just like in Kaze ni Naritai, Wakana is enjoying it and moving a lot on stage.

Musunde Hiraku. I didn’t think much of this song during Kalafina days, but here I enjoyed it a lot. The audience also enjoyed it. Wakana enjoyed it. Its a fun performance.

Hanamizuki. MY FAVE PERFORMANCE FROM THIS CONCERT. Wakana’s voice is so beautiful and she puts so much emotions in it. With just piano as accompaniment I can appreciate Wakana’s voice more. She really wanted to sing this and it shows. At first listen I was wondering why I know the lyrics, then it hit me. The girls sang a short version of this in Kalafina club. I can’t stop watching this.

Oblivious. I’m sorry Wakana, I guess its overwhelming to sing this alone.

Boku no Kokoro no Tokei. Beautiful! I love the song in the album and seeing it being performed is wonderful.

Toki wo koeru yoru ni. I prefer her performance from that show/interview with Takebe. Same with Tsubasa.

Kinmokusei. Beautiful song and beautiful performance. This is one of my faves in the album. And I’m happy watching it being performed. This really suits Wakana’s voice. Same with Ai no Hana.

Hikari Furu. Its not Wakana’s fault. My brain is just too distracting when it expects a different voice in a particular part of the song. Wakana did amazing in singing this tho.

Ato Hitotsu. So soothing. 

Overall: I can see her nervousness at the start but eventually got more comfortable. Her voice is beautiful. When she sings high notes, it feels like flying, soaring. But I still need her to develop her lower registers. There are times when her quiet delivery in low notes actually works. There are also times where I would have preferred a more powerful delivery(that’s just me). Aside from Musende Hiraku, I’ll probably skip other Kalafina songs because of reasons I stated in Hikari Furu. 

Final thoughts: I enjoyed watching this and worth getting the blurray.(Anything for Wakana really)

☑ The album as a whole

It’s a very deep and heavy album. And yet as I was writing it, I feel like I just wanted to look on the bright side. Each song is so heavy, so deep, but then I pull myself together… I was able to do all the things I wanted to do: “Smooch!” is the sort of song I only would’ve been able to pull off right now, there’s lyrics I wrote more politely, and I feel like there’s a lot of ‘brand new aiko’ on it. It’s like the different parts of aiko that used to be on the right and the left and in the middle before are all one now. There were moments on the day I debuted where I braced myself for the good and the bad. I thought, “This is all I have.” Writing my 6th album sort of made me realize I’d forgotten how that felt. I almost feel as if I’ve had to accept that about myself all over again. Whether it’s a sad song, a happy song, or a heartbreaking song, in the end I just write about whatever compels me at the time. I hope you can tell.

☑ Aoi Hikari (Blue Light)

Once I finished this song I was like, “This album’s gonna be alright. I can do this.” I finished it sometime in October or September last year. It was between that and “Mikuni Eki” for a single. I ended up putting it on this album instead because I really, really wanted it to be the first track representing the whole thing. It honestly just popped into my head all at once when I wrote it. The chorus came to me first, then I added the first and second verses, and then the bridge. The melody of the second verse is pretty crucial. In the lyrics I was able to write about things I’d been thinking about but couldn’t put into wordsーlike, I was able to express the painful, innocent parts of me, the ones that are very, very precious to me. I’m really happy about that. It’s also one of the few songs where I use the masculine pronoun ‘boku’. I normally use the pronoun ‘watashi’, but when I use ‘boku’ every now and then I find that I can be a lot more honest. I think using the word ‘boku’ helped me find the words I’d been searching and searching for all this time. Of all the songs I’ve written so far, this song has a very wide, open image to it. It always makes me feel like I’m floating high in the sky, personally. That’s why I gave it that title.

☑ Koibito Doushi (Couples)

Working on this song was quite the struggle for the musicians because of the weird time signature, but it’s a lot of fun for me to sing. The song goes in every directionーit goes here and thereーand when I was singing it, I was like, “Okay, next I’m going to sing it like THIS!” The tempo never changes; it just sounds like it is because of the arrangement, which I find interesting. The way the musicians perform it and the way they change the rhythm makes it sound like the tempo is changing, but it’s all the same tempo. Singing those parts is a lot of fun, too. I have a lot of songs where there’s a bunch of string players performing. There weren’t very many people in this song, though, which is a good thing when you listen to it. The violins in this song make it nice and lively. Although guys might listen to this song and say, “I don’t get girls!”, when I wrote the song I was thinking the oppositeーmaybe the things we think about are pure and straightforward.

☑ Energy

This one’s a rock song. On this album I communicate through nuancesーwell, I do all kinds of things, like getting my point across with the vibe rather than the melody. Like on this song. Once I get into the second half I’m singing with a big ‘Oh, I see!’ grin on my face. There’s also a section halfway through the song, at the chorus, where the guitars start playing ska. I played it on my piano as ska in the original demo tape for the song, and they picked up on that when they did the arrangement. That makes it aiko’s one and only novice ‘ska’ song. Or I guess, ska-like song? (laughs) It’s a mutual love song, but also the first song in a while where I’m telling them what to do. You see it pop up in the lyrics: “Do this, do that.”

☑ Ashita mo Itsumodoori ni (The Same as Always Again Tomorrow)

This one’s a medium-tempo ballad. I feel a lot of regret in the lyrics. No matter how many times I experience love, I never seem to learn anything from it, you know? I understand but always end being unprepared for it, and because of that I think of every single person as a once-in-a-lifetime romance. I took those feelings and wrote about them in the lyrics. Somebody told me, “As big as the world may be, I think you may be the first singer in the J-POP world to ever use the words ‘leaky faucet’ in your lyrics.” (laughs) I think the ordinary things in life are the ones that pull at your heartstrings the most. All it takes is something small and insignificant like a leaky faucet to open the floodgates for me, you know? I suddenly just felt SO sad and then wrote this song. I personally love triplets as a rhythm because they feel so good to sing. I really belted this one out though. Likeーand I mean this in a very positive wayーI sang this song with a lot more fullness than I usually do. Writing this song was like, “Whew, I need to take a little break after singing so passionately!”

☑ Kaban (Bag)

Wow, this really takes me back. I hadn’t ever written a song like it at the time so to this day, I’m really glad I wrote it. I’m not sure when I’ll encounter another song quite like this again. I’m really glad I was able to write it when I did.

☑ Koi no Namida (Tears of Love)

I love the pizzicato in the beginning. They worked so hard in it. At first they told me it might be a bit difficult to make the phrase pizzicato when it reappears. But they made it happen, which I’m very happy about. This song was more of a medium tempo in the actual demo tape, but I was like, “Hey, why not bring the tempo up a bit?” and it gave the song a bit of a rock feel. The melody’s really cute when you listen to it by itself. We decided to go with the approach of making it more of a rock song instead of piling on the cute. Because of that, I feel like this song changed the most from the demo stage. The lyrics are about getting dumped but in the song, the girl still hasn’t given up hope that they’ll get back together. When I finished the melody it felt like I’d come full circle. It almost feels like something I would’ve written a long time ago. I really feel like I came up with an honest, straightforward melody here. A little bit ago I probably would’ve added in some ad-libbing or something like that. I think I’ve sorta come full circle just playing the melody straight, as-is.

☑ Vidro no Yoru (Night of Glass)

The word ‘vidro (’glass’ in Italian)’ has such a lonely vibe to it, don’t you think? It sounds like you’re all by yourself. That’s the image I had in mind when I wrote it, even though it’s got a rock sound to it. Osada [Susumu] arranged this song for me. Isn’t he just amazing? The guitars stand out in this song which made it a little bit hard to like, find a balance within the flow of the album for it, but I think it really ties the whole thing together. I was actually stuck trying to decide whether to make “Kotori Kouen” or “Vidro” the B-side to “Mikuni Eki”. I thought “Vidro” had a more solid, lingering afterimage to it though, so I held onto it with the hope of including it on something else. I decided to put it on this album because of its flow. I was really glad to see Mr. Osada get caught up in the lyrics while we were recording, too. He seemed to really enjoy the “Whether you can really hear the sound of my heart wearing thin” part. “I’m always surrounded by old guys. If they ever ask me why I listen to your music, aiko, I’ll tell ‘em: THIS!” he said, then he went home. (laughs) I always say, “Thank you so much for that very normal reaction!” Deep down, that made me super happy thoughーI was ecstatic!

☑ Ai no Shigusa (Acts of Love)

The way I pumped this one out, it was kinda like it’d possessed me. I usually write a chorus first, then go home and write the rest cooped up at my place. But this one I finished writing in no time at the studio. The lyrics are worded a little bit more politely―a bit of distance has formed between me and the person I like, so I’m being extra polite to them on purpose to get them to notice me. There’s almost like, a despicableness to it. (laughs) Or like, a meanness to it I guess. I do that sometimes. If I get into a fight with someone I’m friends with, I’ll change my tone and start speaking super politely to them. I do it to get them to realize just how mad they made me. Some people don’t, though. (laughs) I really like the way the rhythm changes like, halfway through the song. And I love some of the ballads I came up with on this album even though they’re really heavy.

☑ Zutto Chikaku ni (Forever Close)

I wrote this one 2 or 3 years ago. It’s got a jazzy arrangement to it. We mixed it so that it felt small in scaleーto make it sound like everything is really close. We did the horn section for cheap because there weren’t very many of them, too. That also gives it a really nice vibe, I think. I really love this song. It’s finally on a CD now. This one’s in three-four time too. I really must love three-four time, huh? This is the first time I’ve ever ad-libbed with horns in the back. So like… a collaboration? (laughs) It just feels nice. This is a song I’d really like to do live sometime on a small scale. I’d like that someday. The lyrics make me imagine a dried-up riverbed. I wrote them 2 or 3 years ago but wrote the second chorus recently after being reminded of the same exact feelings I was having then. It brought back so many memories for me.

☑ Smooch!

“Smooch!” refers to the sound you make when you kiss. It’s been a while since I had a title in English, hasn’t it? I named the song “feed us” after a sticker that just happened to catch my eye when I wrote it and put it on the demo tape. Once we’d recorded the vocals and finished up everything including the arrangement, I decided that because that sticker was what inspired me, I ought to make the title in English too. And “Smooch!” was what I found. The first line of this song has a lot of impact, I think. That was what was on the demo tape I made at home. I thought for sure they wouldn’t like it when I brought it with me [to the studio], but they seemed to think it was neat. I was like, “Okiedokie then!” (laughs) I was so excited when I finished the melody, I just wanted to record it as soon as possible! They managed to arrange it exactly the way I wanted it too, so I’m really glad I wrote this song, and that I finished it when I did. Oh, and I’m the one doing the whistling at the end. I’m totally hopeless at it though. (laughs) I actually forgot we’d added in the whistling and was like, “There’s some kind of weird noise in the song.” So then I said, “Um, excuse me…” and found out it was me. Kinda feels like I want you guys to check out how bad my whistling is. (laughs)

☑ Hanakaze (Flower Wind)

Oh man, I had tons of opportunities to sing this song on TV at the end of year, like on “Kouhaku”. The people in the audience come to see all the different artists during specials… and then there was my fans, shouting, “aiko, we’re over here!” when I sang “Hana Kaze”. It was really encouraging. I remember thinking to myself, “I’m nervous, but I’m going to give it my best shot,” and just singing with everything I had in me. We did a lot of things with this song: it was a baseball theme song, and we shot 2 music videos for it too. I feel like I’ve been wanting to look on the bright side ever since, and that I was able to create this album because that feeling took root then. And of course, that positivity really comes through in this song.

☑ Mikuni Eki (Mikuni Station)

Writing this song and releasing it as a single makes me sort of excited to go back home to Mikuni, now. It’s become an even more sacred place for me. It’s like I made my own song commemorating it. I really makes me feel like I got to reflect on all the things that’ve happened, with the friends I made when I was just a student, people who have supported me. Apparently people in Kansai are like, “Why Mikuni?” It’s that much of a local thing. So why Mikuni of all place? Well, because towns like those shine so bright to me.

☑ Hoshi Monogatari (Star Story)

With this song, I was able to express the kind of person I am now. It’s genuinely who i am nowーI mean, like, I really want to be the kind of person who goes home after recording and still is super positive even though I’m beat. But I think that is who I am now. I do fun stuff, and I’m recording music, so even when I’m tired I’m always looking on the bright side. I think that’s important. I feel like the person I am now really comes through in this song. When I get home to my apartment building and into my room, the moon’s always super bright in the sky somewhere over here, right around the time I get off the elevator and walk down the hallway. I look at it and go, “Ah, the weather was nice today, wonder what it’s gonna be like tomorrow.” And then I look at the stars and go, “Ah, it’s almost (month) so this star won’t be up there anymore.” I look at them for a moment and just have a nice, relaxing moment to myself. It’s just for a few seconds, three or so. This song came to be by doing that every single day. The apartment building I’m living in right now, and the things I think and feel in the rhythm of my daily life became a song. And it’s got the perfect sound. It’s exactly what I wanted. It used to just be the first half, actually.  I added another verse A to it because I wanted to make just a little bit bigger, and then it was the absolutely perfect size for the version of myself depicted in the song. This song really only could’ve come together right at this moment in time.

Okay wow. So first of, the english title would be “Who wants to be beautiful must suffer” It’s from one of the few german bands I listen to and the band it’self, just like their lyrics are kind of rammstein-ish. I really like their songs though, especially since they go really deep and also have a freaky kind of ring to everything (all of them kinda satire). This was one of the first songs I knew of them. It’s nanami again! She just uploaded this earlier and again, I think her sound is very endearing so I whipped this up real quick. The winds in this song are just insanely soothing, even if she decided not to grace us with her voice again and instead chooses to delight us with some vocaloids. This is a song from her upcoming album for this M3 (if it even happens), an album titled Deracine 2. I’ve actually heard the first Deracine and it was quite ok, and it seems like this one will have yet another sequel. Unfortunately, most vocals from these albums are entirely made up words so it’s not like I can follow the story as I listen or anything, but still, they’re at least pretty good sounds. Also if you’re wondering much like I was: the taller one on the right is a girl (named Rita) and the shorter one on the left is a boy (named Ende). Lyrics down below!

Onto a semi-related topic, M3 is a bi-annual convention in Japan that independent (”doujin”) musicians use as a marketplace to release their new albums, a lot of the bands I cover here release their new albums every year during this event. In the previous paragraph I say “if” this M3 even happens because Coronavirus panic levels are at an all time high in Japan, a lot of artists have confirmed they won’t be attending the event as crowded spaces are nests for the virus to spread. In fact a lot of concerts and idol events are being suspended or cancelled with full refunds left and right with dates as late as late april, which means even summer comiket (another big convention for doujin bands) may have to be suspended. Hell, even Shinzo Abe is being pressured on whether Japan will even be able to host the Olympic games at all if the virus keeps up, and they just cancelled the first Granblue Versus fighting game tournament because of the virus.

Idk, I thought it was interesting, some artists I follow on twitter seem simultaneously very scared to miss out on the revenues of the event they’ve prepared so much for while of course also fearing getting infected. What can I say, I just hope they can stay both safe and also well fed, also clearly this is yet another victory for digital distribution. Anyway, lyrics down below and see you all next time.

Untitled Review

My bias said since there’re only 2 years left until Arashi’s 20th, they have 2 years to test their limits and boundaries before being busy celebrating entering their 3rd decade, thus, that is what I choose to focus on in appreciating this album...

Green Light - Top batter. I wasn’t sucked into this immediately, but my impression of it has changed. The preview on the website which only featured the chorus made me think of their kouhais (HSJ, Kisumai), but the lower notes changed my mind. I find that I don’t dislike the tuning on the members’ voice, so that’s good. The transitions are niggling me though. Feels like it could have been done more smoothly. I find that the contrasts throw me off a little. Still one of my favourites from the album though.

Mikan - When I first heard it, I was blooming mad because of the mishmash of genres that didn’t feel like they mesh. But as I listened to it more, I became convinced that it is a daring attempt. It was what hinted me at what Arashi was trying to do with the album this round, before they dropped any other details about it. My condolences about the MV, but with Sho as bias, I don’t find myself complaining much when I’ve got that pair dance to flail over. 

Sugar - Love the beat. I call these kinds of songs the ‘blast them out loud as you you go for a drive maybe at coastal roads ala what they do in MVs’ (or ‘Drive songs’ for short). Members singing in the back has got my attention rather than the member that’s doing the main, like when they’re going ‘sugaa~~rrr’ and ‘my loo~~vee’. Also, something about this reminds me of EXILE. 

Ari no Mama de - Clap your hands to this, yeah~ Wave it side to side, yeah~ Channel your 1D fangirl heart, yeah~ (there, I’ve gone and said it). I want to be skipping around with my tween girlfriends while holding hands. Quite Western boyband-ish *cough* for our Japanese manband.

Fu’un - Kamen Rider or Super Sentai OSTs. Nothing really bad about it, but it’s never really been my kind of song.  

Houyou - The first half felt a bit complicated. I couldn’t tell when the song was going to settle. And then I realized it wouldn’t. Then Sakurap actually caught me in this state which I’m thankful for. Bias he may be, it felt like a float to hold onto in the middle of a calm sea, but in the middle of the sea nonetheless. Edit: I found out the meaning. Suffice to say, no wonder I felt lost.. ahaha..

Pray - Shojo slice-of-life ending theme song. I’m seeing curious faces peeking out of umbrellas and up at the sky as the rain lets up but the air is still heavy with moisture (that’s probably just the ‘傘’ word getting in the way, though).  

Hikari - Ninoooo~~~~~~ If I sounded this good opening a song, I’d call it out as my favorite, too. I can sort of see him as Disney princess singing to charm the tiny critters who’ll become his allies. Gospel-ish, just like they said in the jweb vid. Definitely a song that makes you stand up and sway left-right and clapping to beat. I like songs where there is obvious non-member backing, mostly because if it’s performed, then I like the backup singers in the con to have their time to shine. Or, they could have a choir, but they did that two years ago in Miyagi, so idk. The Sakurap isn’t my favourite kind, but appreciating the versatility. Would’ve liked to hear the 15-seconds after Ohno’s main following Sakurap as a cappella, but oh well. 

Kanata e - I couldn’t make my mind up about the song until after the 1min mark. I’ll be honest and say only the chorus is sort of working for me. Sounds like uplifting anime OST. The rest... doesn’t really stick.

Song for you - This was great. This is great. Arashi did me in with this one. Ohno had gotten to me on Msute (I’m kinda weak for Ohno’s solo lines in group songs). But then they sang in unison the same lines/melody towards the end, and I can honestly say, the 5 of Arashi topped Ohno solo. That part was... beautiful. I don’t really have any other way to describe it. Whatever it was that Ohno found in Miles Away last year, they didn’t let it be a one-time thing and go to waste. 

Kanpai Song - Either Kanjani or WEST. This was a Kansai song that thought it might want to do a little ‘上京’ing. From the title, I was expecting something like Energy Song. The theme was, the melody not so much. It’s not a song I would dislike, but clashes a bit with my image of current Arashi.

Unit Songs:

Curiosity Team - Bazuri Night: Initial D (?) Eurobeat stuff I should think. Fuzakeru song, as I thought it’ll be when I saw the unit (I might not show it, but I’m still a bit sore about Yama). I had this teeny hope for a slow song when the Machi ga Irodzuku koro video was going around, but Aiba on Rekomen explained that it wasn’t so. So the song is basically the old men having their night out unsupervised. I don’t mind doing some ParaPara to this.

 Riida and his babies - Yoru no Kage: They sound like a a KPop group trying to promote themselves in Japan (in the sense that the group puts more effort since they’re trying to enter a foreign market). That, or Miura Daichi. I was pretty sure we’re going to get something classy from this unit though, so in that aspect I wasn’t disappointed. Nice high notes. Jun did great matching the other two, always have been a bit of his specialty, I should think. Looking forward to the performance. 

Soubusen Nakama - UB: Unit bath. Of course. What were we thinking of getting when it’s these two. A straight ballad? Pfft. But the harmonizing is sweet. If I didn’t know better, I think I’m hearing open fields and clear endless blue skies with whispy clouds. There’s something Western (American outback? not country though) about it. It’s kinda cute if you don’t think about the meaning too much. 

Sakumoto - Comeback: So, this is something like if MC Sakurai and DJ Matsumoto from Arafes ‘13 got together for real and decided to do something from 2 decades ago. I have no objections to this (kidding, I LOVE it).   It is ‘Get Arrested Pt. II’ after all. The countdowns in the song works so much for me. Gets you all riled up and excited for them. I can already hear the dead whale noises I’ll be making as watching the DVD next year induces a cardiac arrest in me. Edit: I just remembered the Yakai episode where they have an ICU girl describe Sho as having ‘good vibes’. It’d tickle me if that’s where the phrase in the lyrics come from.

Why do I feel that this album is pretty polarizing? I’ve seen some people who aren’t into it (Japanese fans, though). I’m supposing it’s all the new sounds we’re hearing? However, despite that, I’ll repeat what I said in a post the other day,  I hope they can continue doing something different without fear of backlash from fans. Personally, I’m really happy with it. 

Edit: After getting a proper looks, I’m wondering how much the members were involved with the lyrics. Song For You, for example, would be really weird if it was written without the members having any say at all. I mean, it’s beautiful, it’s a story of the group’s journey, but if a complete stranger wrote it then... you know. Kinda weird. Idk.

P.S.: There’s always this one song in each con that makes me wish I was there whenever I watch the con DVD, eg, Hope in the Darkness for Digitalian, Ohno’s Akatsuki in Japonism, and Nino’s Mata Kyou in AYH. But Song For You makes me wish I could have attended the con just from the sound of it. Here’s to them giving the song the justice it deserves.
