A (probably) speculative question, if you dont mind.
Do you know how many miles long the Rainbow Bridge is from it's starting point in the city/palace to it's end point at Himinbjorg?
I read on the wiki that in the MCU, Asgard is about the size of the continental United States, which made me realise we see only a fraction of it on film. And that got me thinking about the dimensions of the city. And the population and where they live. We know so little about Asgard.
Hey Anon, thank you so much for giving me another opportunity to ramble about Asgard!
First, let's take a look at the view from Himinbjorg AND the palace:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see, The Rainbow Bridge is very long and Himinbjorg is so far away it looks like a mere dot. When in reality, the structure itself is massive. Here you can see Heimdall standing inside for size comparison. The bridge is also quite wide.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, let's look at Valaskjalf: The palace is ginormous (these pillars right here are chambers, as seen in the scene where Frigga fights with Malekith- one of them is hers, and they can be barely seen when looking from the city's borders)
Tumblr media
The entrance in the lower middle used to be the throne room before they moved it higher up and that is a great example of how big the halls are
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now for the entrance gate-
This entire section right here is BEHIND the gate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can probably tell by now, the gate is outside the city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is the size of their horses for comparison
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one shows the bridge connecting to the palace
Tumblr media
While I cannot give you the exact number as it is not stated anywhere (not even in norse mythology) and I don't plan on spending my morning calculating how long a horse is and how many would fit lol, I think this is a good way of seeing just how big Asgard is. Remember, the realm is much bigger than the city. There are mountains surrounding it which were not really shown or explored apart from some brief scenes in Ragnarok (but I prefer to not treat that movie as canon on anything else but the look of the realm)
(a post about the palace here)

This idea was bright brought up by some mutuals on discord, but it could be possible that heimdall is some kind of Gold Baron in Asgard.
So based on this statement by Sindri in the art book
Tumblr media
Himinbjorg is actually a mine. Myth wise, this is actually Heimdall’s home (or in other cases it is where the rainbow bridge connects to Asgard).
Not only that, but considering his role in the Svarthalheim rebellions, makes it likely they would have used dwarves or other war prisoners to run these mines. Combined with the fact that heimdall has so much gold in his design, it makes me think that he is the one in charge of the whole operation himself.
In a very sadistic way, it’s almost a play on the whole “dwarves working the mines” from the original Snow White film

TELL ME ABOUT ASGARD | Loki
☆ premise: loki comforts you after you wake up in the middle of the night because of nightmares.
☆ pairing: loki x gn!reader
☆ warnings: sweet!romantic!loki, comfort, fluff
☆ a/n: this is old, but i haven't posted it here yet. didn't really change much except for grammar issues (def cringed a bit at how much i sucked at grammar back then😭)
Tumblr media
You laid in bed awake, the moonlight drifting inside the bedroom. Sitting up, you pushed the covers away from you, wrapping your arms around your knees and pulling them towards your chest. You couldn't sleep, and you knew why. The nightmares were coming back, worse than before.
You felt the bed dip and heard Loki shuffling behind you. You knew he was giving you a concerned look. “Can't sleep?” he asked. You nodded your head, pursing your lips. You shivered slightly as the night wind flew into the open window.
“Feeling cold?” he asked again, and you nodded your head a second time. The nighttime air tonight was much colder than the previous nights.
The bed shifted again, and arms wrapped around your waist, pulling you into Loki's chest. You leaned your back against him, your eyes fluttering close for a moment, finding comfort in his warm embrace. He wrapped his hand around yours.
“I'm sorry for waking you,” you mumbled, staring at the starry night sky. You fiddled with one of Loki's callused hands, your thumbs moving across his knuckles and large fingers.
“No need to be sorry, my love,” He said, placing a kiss on your shoulder. The both of you became silent, the sound of leaves rustling and wind whistling being the only sounds you hear as you stayed in Loki's embrace.
“Tell me... tell me about Asgard, please,” you whispered out of the blue, breaking the calm silence, mostly out of sheer curiosity of the golden city from where Loki spent most of his life in. His blue eyes widened at you before he raised an eyebrow. He contemplated your request before he nodded his head.
“It's a beautiful place. There's the Palace of Valaskjalf, where I was raised alongside Thor. Then there's the Rainbow Bridge that connects the castle to Himinbjorg. Himinbjorg connects Asgard to the other realms through the Bifrost, the energy that allows travel throughout the Nine Realms.”
“Is it truly the most wonderful thing in the universe?” You inquired, imagining what Asgard must've been in your mind's eye.
“There is one thing on Midgard that is much more beautiful than Asgard, or any of the Nine Realms, and I prefer it more than anything in the universe...” he trailed off as the corners of his mouth curve into a small smile against your shoulder.
A tinge of red tinted your cheeks, and you allowed a smile to escape from your lips, reaching the corners of your eyes. You knew he was talking about you. He said the exact same words to you back then when you first asked about the Norse realm.
“What is Asgard like?” You asked softly, leaning in slightly from your sitting position on the bed. You were curious about the place where Loki grew up.
"It's much more beautiful than here,” he replied, staring into your eyes. He hesitated for a moment, before adding, “but, there is one thing on Midgard that is much more beautiful than Asgard, or any of the Nine Realms, and I prefer it more than anything in the universe...”
"What is it, then?” You pressed on, a curious look on your face. Whatever it was, it must've been the most beautiful thing in the universe if it isn't the golden realm of Asgard.
Loki swiped a strand away from your face and tucked it behind your ear before leaning in and whispering, “You.”
You still remembered the memory as if it was yesterday, still remembered the words marked into your brain, still remembered the way his eyes filled with longing as he stared at you after his confession.
You brought yourself back to reality, and you heard Loki continuing to talk about Asgard and its people, all the while whispering sweet things into your ear. Your eyes started to droop, even though you wanted to hear what Loki had to say. Finally, you were asleep, Loki's words floating in your head.

To Have and To Hold - Chapter 7
THaTH Masterlist Complete Masterlist
Summary: Loki faces his father, Odin, on Asgard. Violet tries to find a way to get back to Loki. Pairing: Loki x OFC/Reader Word Count: Over 2K Tags/Warnings: Lots of angst. Pregnancy. Early labor. Dividers by: @firefly-graphics
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Loki landed in Himinbjorg, stumbling forward. The cuffs around his wrist kept him off balance and unable to use his seidr. Heimdall stood regal and unmoved as he welcomed the younger prince home. Behind him, stood The King of the Nine Realms, Odin. Along with the highest trained einherjar poised and ready with their weapons pointed at Loki.
“Why, hello father. What a wonderful sight to see you greet me home,” Loki sarcastically smiled, simulating the bravado and confidence of a hero being applauded upon their return.
The Allfather grunted and turned without saying anything more. His deep crimson cloak billowed as he made his way on his chariot back to the palace. The einherjar positioned themselves around Loki, prodding him to follow.
“Welcome back your highness,” Heimdall said with a bow. Loki just sneered back at him, angry at the turn of events and Heimdall’s participation in all of it.
Upon exiting the temple, Loki’s first steps on the Bifrost bridge were greeted by his mother who walked alongside him. “Shouldn’t you be in the chariot with Father? Wouldn’t you be embarrassed to be seen with the lowly prince turned criminal?” He asked looking straight ahead.
“I have never been prouder of you, my sweet boy,” the Allmother stated. Loki simply looked at her. His features did not betray the shock that he felt inside. “Stand proud. Chin up. Back straight. I walk beside you,” she smiled.
“Thank you, Mother.” They walked along the long stretch of the Bifrost on foot. The Queen’s hand tucked neatly under his arm.
The einherjar kept their weapons to their sides, not wanting to point them at Loki and subsequently their Queen. The citizens had all bowed down in her presence as they walked past the city streets. No one had seen the cuffs adorning Loki’s wrist.
It was a blessing to have the support of his mother. Even more so to have her pride. What did he do? He’s done nothing but break his promise to his restitution. What’s more, is that he made poor decisions that not only cost him his life but the life of the one he loves and now the child.
The child! The child is still alive! How could Violet lie about that? Why did she run away? So many questions ran through his head, and he wasn’t sure what to believe anymore. He was shocked, first and foremost. Angry, second, that you had lied to him. Relieved that he had found you and then a new worry. That he might not be there to see you give birth to his child. He knew what this was. It was a second chance. A fortune that he was granted to make things right.
As Loki continued walking in silence next to his mother, his mind wandered back to Midgard where you still were. Were you ok? Were you taking care of yourself? You looked so beautiful and radiant. Was it the glow of pregnancy or were you happier not having him in your life?
The warm afternoon air gave way to the cold breeze of the palace’s corridors. Loki was led straight to the throne to await the decision of his ruthless father. He stood to attention at the bottom of the dais. His mother squeezed his arm before letting go and left to join Odin by his side.
“What do you have to say for yourself?” Odin’s voice carried with it a finality and heaviness that could bring anyone to their knees.
“What would you like me to say? Tell me. Because anything else that I say, which doesn’t fit with your explanation of things, would just be left unheard,” Loki said uncaring.
“Why do you insist on making things so difficult?”
“Who made me this way?!  Who named me The God of Lies and Mischief?! If everyone, including yourself, sees me as nothing more than a troublesome, villainous god, why bother being anything else? You have all made up your mind. I tire of trying to change it. The only person who ever saw me for who I was, was Violet.”
“Yes, the poor Midgardian you decided to dally with. The cause of your indiscretion. I have half a mind to bring her here and…”
“Don’t you dare touch her!”
“I will do as I damn well please!” Odin screamed out as he stood up. “And you would do right by staying quiet and repentant as I decide both your fates!”
Frigga placed her hand on her husband’s arm, hoping to quell the anger rising in both.
“You have proven that you cannot carry out your sentence on Midgard. Thor had hoped to rehabilitate you on that rudimentary planet. But I see now that you are both fools. You will carry out your sentence here in the lower dungeons.”
“Darling…” Frigga tried to intervene.
“And no one shall change my mind on the matter. I have said my final verdict and it shall be carried out.” Odin finished, ignoring the quiet please of his wife.
Loki stood resolutely. The inner turmoil waging war inside him made his face contort in pain and anger. He refused to grovel for his freedom. Refused to beg like a commoner praying for some divine intervention. But it was not just his life now. This was for Violet and the miracle that he and you had created.
Loki wordlessly fell to his knees. His eyes traced the marble veins of the floor, taking a beat, wondering what he could say to Odin to let him have another chance. “I…” Loki swallowed. “I beg of you to reconsider. It is not for my life, I plead. But for the life of my…”
“Your beloved?” Odin scoffed. “Who is she to have my son, a god, on his knees begging for his life?”
“As your…son, I plead…no, I beg…I have wronged her, Mother.” Loki spoke directly to Frigga. “Not a day goes by where I have not wanted to apologize. And she is by no means absolved of fault, but I have yet to speak with her. All I ask is that…is that I see her. Stay, with her…”
“How dare you…” Odin was interrupted by a strong grasp on his shoulder. Frigga had stood up and had not taken her eyes off her beloved son.
“Who am I, if not the goddess of hearth and home, to deny my own son a prayer?” The Allmother decreed. Loki lifted his head and for once was filled with hope. Frigga had a distant look in her eyes. As if she were watching a movie that was filtered through a dirty window.
“Guards! Take him away.” Odin ordered. The closest einherjar grabbed Loki by the arms and hoisted him off his knees. As he was escorted down to the lower dungeons. Frigga had returned from her journey and smiled, “All will be well, my darling. Have faith.” Her voice echoed in his head before he descended into despair.
Tumblr media
“Thor, please. You have to bring him back!” You grabbed his chest plate, shaking him as you spoke. Callum had ushered the three of you back into his bungalow. He could see how visibly distraught you were. The reappearance of Loki in your life had been looming over your head for the last couple of months. Callum wanted it to happen sooner, but not in such a dramatic spectacle as it did just hours ago.
“Violet, where have you been?” Thor asked. “My brother has been worried sick about you. He barely eats and sleeps as it is. What made you think you could run away like that?”
“Vee, where did you go?” Bruce asked.
“Here. This whole time with Cal.”
“How are you? How’s the baby?” he followed the question.
“The baby?!” It was then that Thor looked down and noticed the bump protruding from your abdomen. “I thought…I thought…” Thor pointed a finger down to your stomach. Then back up at you. Then back down to your stomach.
“Stop it!” You grabbed Thor’s finger and held on tight as you stared into his eyes. “What are they going to do to him, Thor?”
Like a crack of lightning, Thor’s expression changed. “It won’t be good, dear sister. This will be his second offense. Father will not take that lightly. He might be in the dungeons, permanently.”
“Permanently? He promised to come back.” The thought of never seeing Loki again filled you with dread. Isn’t that what you wanted? Why you left?
“Why did you guys come here? What made you think that it was ok for him to ignore his conditional release?” you asked angrily.
“To look for you, Violet!” Bruce yelled back. “You were injured! Then on top of that, you asked me to do something horrible and keep that baby a secret. Loki loves you! He went crazy these past few months trying to look for you. And honestly, we were scared too. How could you leave just like that?”
“I…” your lips started to tremble. You had hurt more than Loki, you realized. “I’m sorry, Bruce. Thor. I didn’t think that it would…I never…” More tears ran down your face. You held yourself tightly as your resolve came crumbling down. Your lungs gasped for air as the crushing weight of what you had done came bearing down on you.
You asked Bruce and Stephen to do a horrible thing. You undervalued the opinion of the one you loved the most and decided that he was better off without you. Now, he’s gone. Possibly forever. And it was all because you were too scared to talk. Too scared to admit you were less than. What a surefire way to prove your self-doubt correct.
“Would you believe me if I say I was only trying to do what I thought was right?” You mumbled incoherently through your cries. Callum came in and wrapped his arms around you. “I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.” You cried into his shoulder.
“We know you didn’t, Vee. But the truth is, we’ve been worried sick about you. Loki was too far gone with worry. He even turned Thor into a frog!” Bruce declared pointing to Thor.
“Tis true, milady. I had mucous on my skin days after he changed me back.” Thor said reminiscing with a grimace on his face.
“He loves you, Violet. I hope you can see that. Especially now.” Bruce said. “He sacrificed his freedom to find you and hopefully bring you home.”
You stared quietly at Bruce. A plan was forming in the periphery of your mind. The pieces were falling into place, but now wasn’t the time for thinking. You were going to do exactly what you were good at. And that was running. “Thor. I need to see him.”
“I can’t help you, dear Violet. Once my father has commanded his return…”
“Take me to him. Take me to Asgard!” you demanded.
“What?” “No!” “Absolutely not. Not in your condition.” All three men shouted at once.
“I need to see him. To apologize. To let him know that I was wrong. And to let him know that I never stopped loving him. Please, Thor.” All three looked at you, with varying degrees of concern and worry on their faces.
“Well, Father never said anything about Loki not having visitors.” Thor mused.
“You can’t be serious?!” Callum yelled out. “Can you at least wait till after the baby comes?” he said directed at you.
“No. It has to be now. I don’t know what they’ll do to him, Cal.” You responded.
“OK if you go, then I’ll go with you. There’s no telling what the Bifrost might do to you in your condition.” Bruce decided.
“Really, Bruce?” You looked at him with fondness in your eyes. You had all but forsaken the Avengers, but he was still looking out for you. You hugged him tightly and whispered, “Thank you. I’m so sorry I put you through that. I’m so sorry, Bruce.”
Bruce hugged you tightly, “It’s ok. You’re forgiven. Just…just don’t do it again.”
“Ok. I promise.”
“To Loki or anyone else that cares about you! Understood?”
“I promise,” you said smiling. “Ok, Thor. I’m ready.”
“What about me? Colonel Rhodes is gonna be furious!” Callum said.
“Cal, I have to do this. Loki risked his life to find me after I was selfish and cowardly. I have to save him now. Please tell Rhodey I’m sorry. I’ll make it up to both of you. Ok?”
Cal sighed and gave up. He pressed a kiss on your forehead, “Just promise me this isn’t a goodbye. That I’ll see you and my niece or nephew soon.” His words made you realize something. You’ve been running way too often if even Cal thinks that he might not see you again.
“I’m sorry that you had to ask me that, Cal. Know that I never mean to run from you. You are my family. You will always be home for me.” You hugged your brother fiercely. He always looked out for you. “I’ll be back soon.”
“You better!” he said narrowing his eyes. You squeezed him one last time before turning to Thor. He opened his arms, and you stepped in, hugging his midsection tight. Bruce, on the other side of him, doing the same thing. Thor lifted Mjolnir into the air and called out for Heimdall.
You were instantly surrounded by a kaleidoscope of light, blurring and changing. You felt a pull from up above as if you were being stretched but your feet were heavy and stuck on the ground. Then you felt it. Like you were being freed from the bounds of Earth. As if the gravitational ties that once held you were sprung free and you catapulted into the space beyond. You held on tighter to Thor as Bruce screamed like a banshee in your ear.
In what felt like a rollercoaster slowing and stopping, you arrived feet first onto a gilded marble floor. Thor patted you hard on the back which started your breathing once again. “Are you all right, Violet?” Thor asked concerned.
“Y-yes,” you coughed. “Just needed time for the air to catch up with my lungs!” You took deep long breaths, holding your chest and wincing at the minute pain in your abdomen.
“Welcome to Asgard, your highness. Lady Violet. Doctor Banner.” Heimdall greeted all three of you.
“Good to see you Heimdall. Is father…”
“I have announced your arrival. He is awaiting your appearance in the grand throne room.”
“I thank you,” Thor said nodding in his direction. You looked up at Heimdall. The vision where he helped you did not do him justice. Physically, in the here and now, he was much more impressive. So much grander and brighter. You nodded once in greeting, and he returned it with a smile.
As the three of you made your way down the Bifrost bridge and past the town, you felt a mixture of wonder and sentiment, watching all the places where Loki might have spent his childhood.
When you arrived at the foot of the dais, you were feeling more winded and tired. A slight pain constricting in your lower abdomen and around your back.
“What is the meaning of this?” Odin boomed in the large hall.
“Father, this is Doctor Bruce Banner and Lady Violet Moreau. She wishes to speak with Loki.” Thor introduced you. At the mention of your name, the Allmother stood up.
“This is Lady Violet? The one that has captured my son’s heart?” she smiled as she came down the steps. She came up to you and held out her hands. You bowed down before her. Then placed your hand on hers. “But you are with child!” Frigga noted.
“Yes, your majesty.” You realized how this must look. Exactly what Loki’s parents had warned him and Thor about. A mere nobody coming to the palace claiming that they carry the future line of The Nine Realms. Expecting royal treatment. “I didn’t scheme to entrap him, your highness.”
“Call me Frigga, darling. And NO, I have not once thought that. We had not once thought that,” Frigga said forcefully, looking at her husband.
“I don’t want to make any claims, your majesties. All I ask is to speak…to speak to Loki. And perhaps discuss a few things.” You started wincing and your breathing got erratic. You squeezed Frigga’s hand as a small whimper left your lips.
Frigga’s eyes went vacant and far but quickly came back to their rightful blue. “It is time,” she said holding onto your hand. You screamed in agony as the pain got worse and worse.
“Violet, are you ok? What’s happening? Speak to me?” Bruce said next to you. “Have you been counting your contractions?”
“It’s too early. It’s too early.” You kept repeating.
“Prepare the healer’s bath!” Frigga yelled out to the closest guards.
“What is happening?” Odin demanded. Thor just shrugged, not wanting to get in the way.
“She’s going into labor!” Bruce yelled out.

Changing his appearance had always been easy, it was second-nature. Like slipping on a coat made of the softest materials in the Nine Realms. But whenever he took the form of him, his skin always prickled with discomfort. Instead of the silky coat, it was an abrasive outfit of unease.
He had gotten more used to it, but as he strode to visit Heimdall, he silently contemplated why he was bothering with such an illusion. The man would most likely see through it. Your face flashed through his mind, and he reminded himself that, no, he did not care about the mortal. You simply intrigued him. That's all.
As he entered Himinbjorg, his eyes landed on the man in the shining armor.
Heimdall turned around. "Your Majesty." He bowed, but his gaze never left the supposed "King". "How might I be of service?"
"My son has befriended another human." Loki stated. "Tell me about the mortal."
"A curious request." Heimdall remarked.
Loki could feel himself being scrutinized, but he ignored the unease. "I must know if his relationships with these humans will disrupt Asgard anymore than they already have."
"Of course, Your Majesty. Who might this human be?"
"They call her (y/n)(l/n)."
Loki stood there, watching Heimdall with the same eyes that used to look at him so belittling.
"It seems that she was injured."
Loki could barely stop himself from tensing, why would he be tense? Who cares if the mortal was hurt? He didn't. He wasn't concerned, he was....worried that someone who intrigued him would no longer provide amusement. Yeah. That's what was happening.
His heart certainly wasn't beating faster because of concern, nope, it wasn't beating any faster. He was calm and composed because there certainly wasn't anything happening that would increase his heart rate.
"How so?" He tried to tell himself that his nonchalance wasn't, in fact, feigned.
"Given the destruction, most likely some sort of explosion had happened. She is resting at the moment. Although, she might be in pain. She is sobbing."
For a moment, his breathing stopped.
You were in pain?
After leaving Himinbjorg, Loki returned to the palace, allowing himself to drop his illusion once he was behind locked doors. As always, his skin felt grotesquely wrong from putting on the façade of his false father. But having left Odin on Midgard, he had no choice but to wear that illusion whenever he was out of his chambers.
The people wouldn't accept the false son as King.
They all looked to Thor, but Thor had abandoned his duties for his Midgardian passions.
Loki's mind slipped to a certain one of Thor's acquaintances, the very person he had inquired about only an hour earlier.
You were...interesting.
He had been curious about you since the moment he had borrowed you unwillingly, having simply chosen to grab you because you were a friend of Thor. To taunt his brother. That was all.
But the way you acted, your responses to everything-
You acted like you knew something everyone else didn't.
And with your last parting words- the ones whispered in a small closet, the two of you so close, he could-
He shook his head, steering his thoughts away because no, he didn't care for you. Especially not like that. He was simply curious.
He just wanted some answers.
~~
Bucky had known this was going to happen the moment Steve had shown up in his apartment.
After all, the government hadn't given much choice. There were two ways it could've ended. At least this way he wasn't six feet under. Although, the world would probably be better off if he had been.
They had transported him in the "cell", although it was more like a plexiglass cage.
As his eyes roved his surroundings, he thought about the peculiar interaction he had experienced only moments earlier.
~~
You were trying to find Nat and Tony, knowing full well you weren't supposed to be out of bed, better yet in this government building. But no one had tried to stop you when you flew in, although you had counted on that. You had hoped that wearing the Iron Man suit would allow you inside, and it had, you just had to do a bit of talking and playing the injured card to get in.
Although, after the flight from Berlin, you were feeling funky. Your body didn't seem to like all the flying, and your concussion only meant that you had to deal with constant headaches as well as the pain from all the burns. Yeah, you really shouldn't've been out of bed. But you had used your injuries to your advantage whenever people had stopped you as you had been wandering through the building. Getting in the entrance had been absurdly easy, you were honestly surprised Zemo was the only guy sneaking in and wreaking havoc with how little effort it took to get inside.
It had worked in the end, as evidenced by how you were rushing through the busy building trying to find anyone. You had seen the cars come in, you knew that Steve, Sam, and Bucky were there. Now you just needed to find one of them.
You knew full well you were on a tight-schedule. There was hardly any time left before everything absolutely went to shit, and you needed to prevent so many things from happening. The team breaking up, Rhodey's injury, the imprisonment of everyone on Cap's team…
There was a lot to get done.
But dammit, the building was huge and you had only seen the parts of it that the movie had shown, so you were hopelessly lost. Sure, you could call Nat or Tony, but you weren't supposed to be there, and you didn't need them to know any sooner than possible. Although, you couldn't count on much time, the guy who had let you in probably notified Tony that you were here.
"I can't believe they caught him already." Two people walked by you, one a tall woman with dreadlocks pulled back into a ponytail, and a shorter woman with buzzed hair, both in uniforms. "He's a ghost story for 50 years and then gets caught like this? Doesn't seem right."
The shorter woman responded, "I don't know. They did say his brain got fucked up by Hydra, right? I can't imagine he's the most clear thinking person."
"I guess," that taller one conceded.
"Hey, it's not our job to analyze the prisoners, just to guard them."
You thanked whatever cosmic entity was out there, and followed the two women down a hall, stopping when they went into the room.
It had the kind of glass you had seen in police movies, the one-sided glass. Well, at least you assumed it did, because the guards didn't react when their eyes landed right on you. The door was an entrance into the large room where Bucky was held in his cell. Although, the cell was empty, and that's when you heard all the people.
You hid around a corner, watching as armored guards escorted Bucky. Your head peeked out, and you ducked behind the corner when you met eyes with the man.
Holy fuck you just met eyes with Bucky-motherfucking-Barnes!!
You had to berate yourself for a moment, reminding yourself that now was not the time for fangirling. Even with the reminder, you couldn't help but put your head back out.
He was still staring at you.
You sucked in a breath, heart thudding in your chest as you saw him. He was looking at you intensely, analyzing you. You couldn't help but feel star-struck. He had always been one of the heroes you had defended, loving that he had always been a hero, and hating that an organization had to spend 20 years torturing him to make sure that he didn't know that.
Your eyes glinted with something like awe, and unbeknownst to you, underneath the expressionless façade he put on, he was perplexed.
~~
Bucky didn't get it.
Why did you look at him like that? Who were you?
He was strapped to a chair, one that had been designed specifically to hold him. He kept his face looking straight ahead, observing everything but not reacting to anything. Thoughts swirling behind his stoic expression, thoughts about the woman who had held his gaze.
You had ducked behind the wall the first time you saw him, and he hadn't been surprised. He had thought it was from fear but….you put your head back out and looked at him like- like-
He just didn't understand.
Why were your lips parted slightly? Why were your eyes wide and star-struck? He knew that expression, decades of studying people’s body movements to find them at their most vulnerable. But the expression just didn't fit. You had the look of someone seeing their idol, not of making eye-contact with a supposed-terrorist and ex-assassin.
Why weren't you terrified?
How come you were frozen, but not out of fear?
~~
You were, yet again, hiding behind a wall and watching as shit went down.
After your staring contest with the one-and-only James Buchanan Barnes, you had ran around like a chicken with its head cut-off, hoping to find someone you knew. You were wandering for close to an hour, getting distracted a few times, and also having to run from certain individuals *cough* Secretary Ross *cough*.
With that bitch roaming around, and you unable to text Nat or Tony to find Steve(due to the fact that they would not exactly be happy with the fact that you weren't on bed rest. And that you had flown there in the suit with a concussion.), you had the hardest fucking time finding anybody. You clutched your head, a migraine only making the day worse.
Why was the building so damn big?
At long last, you had managed to find them. And by them, you meant Tony and Steve. Obviously, you couldn't just enter the room with Tony in it, or it would make the last hour of hiding from him useless, but you really needed to talk to Steve.
So, you decided to wait it out, your only company the headache raging in your skull.
"Hey, you wanna see something cool? I pulled something from Dad's archives. Felt timely. FDR signed the Lend-Lease bill with these in 1941. Provided support to the Allies when they needed it most."
You were surprised by how much Tony's voice carried from the other room, but those words gave you an idea of exactly what scene you were listening in on. What made you wince though, was the controlled tone of his voice. He sounded angry, but like he was trying to hide it. He didn't sound like that in the movie.
"Some would say it brought our country closer to war."
Yep, you knew exactly what conversation this was. Steve's words were ones you remembered well.
"See? If not for these, you wouldn't be here. I'm trying to...what do you call it? That's an olive branch. Is that what you call it?"
"Is Pepper here? I didn't see her."
"We're kinda...well, not kinda..."
"Pregnant?"
"No. Definitely not. We're taking a break. It's nobody's fault."
"I'm so sorry, Tony. I didn't know."
"A few years ago, I almost lost her, so I trashed all my suits. Then, we had to mop up HYDRA...and then Ultron. My fault. And then, and then, and then, I never stopped. Because the truth is I don't wanna stop. I don't wanna lose her. I thought maybe the Accords could split the difference. In her defense, I'm a handful. Yet, Dad was a pain in the ass, but he and Mom always made it work."
You felt bad, having forgotten about the break-with-Pepper-thing. Tony was lonely, and guilt-ridden, and angry, it was no wonder a fight broke out.
"You know, I'm glad Howard got married. I only knew him when he was young and single."
"Oh, really? You two knew each other? He never mentioned that. Maybe only a thousand times. God, I hated you."
"I don't mean to make things difficult."
"I know, because you're a very polite person."
You could practically see Tony gritting his teeth, his tone far less playful than how it was in the movie.
"If I see a situation pointed south...I can't ignore it. Sometimes I wish I could."
You knew what words were going to come out of Tony's mouth in response to that, he was going to say, "No, you don't."
"Really? And was what happened to (y/n) not a situation pointed south? You broke the law to protect a terrorist. I'd say you ignored a pretty big situation pointed south."
Fuck, fuck, fuck, no this wasn't supposed to happen. Dammit!
"It wasn't him. Bucky didn't bomb the building."
"Really?" The sarcasm in Tony's voice had a biting edge to it, but he managed to get his anger somewhat under control. "Listen...so far, nothing's happened that can't be undone, if you sign. We can make the last 24 hours legit. Barnes gets transferred to an American psych-center...instead of a Wakandan prison."
"I'm not saying it's impossible, but there would have to be safeguards."
"Sure. Once we put out the PR fire, those documents can be amended. I'd file a motion to have you and Wanda reinstated-"
"Wanda? What about Wanda?"
Nonono, nothing is going alright.
You knew you only had minutes, seconds maybe to stop the rift from being irreparable. Actually no, it gets irreparable after Tony finds out that Bucky killed his parents-
"She's fine. She's confined to the compound, currently. Vision's keeping her company."
Dammit you need to stop zoning out.
"Oh God, Tony! Every time. Every time I think you see things the right way-"
"What? It's a 100 acres with a lap pool. It's got a screening room. There's worse ways to protect people."
"Protection? Is that how you see this? This is protection? It's internment, Tony."
You couldn't let it happen. Not again. Not like in the movie. You knew that Steve was only moments from leaving the room, the issue unresolved and the fight forever impending. You didn't know how you would fix it, but you hoped you could manage to get them to relax enough that you could convince them both to do something.
Just as you were ready to step out and make yourself known, a hand grabbed your shoulder and pulled you back."
"I don't think they'd appreciate you eavesdropping, darling."

Into Darkness [Chapter Two] Trial [Loki]
Tumblr media
A/n: sorry for the late update. Thor and Loki will appear soon, no worries. If you'd like to be added to the tag list, let me know, or have any questions. Please enjoy.
Warning(s): Norse mythology, anxiety, lore.
Luminous flashes of multicolored light streaked past her eyes so fast, Asta could hardly focus on a single thing, let alone her father who was in front of her, soaring through the air. The Bifrost was as he described it to be, instantaneous, and by the time she opted to close her eyes, ignoring the churning in her stomach, the trip from Vanaheim to Asgard was over.
Asta was shoved out into a dome-shaped hall with many golden coils of various sizes lining the interior. In the middle of the room, on an elevated circular stage, stood a dark-skinned man of 187 centimeters wearing a gold metal chest plate that extended into shoulder guards over simple brown clothing. His most noticeable trait, in her opinion, was his gorgeous orange-gold eyes that studied her in curiosity from beneath the golden-horned helmet on top of his head.
"Heimdall, my old friend, you have my thanks," Skírnir declared. He turned his keen eyes to the excited woman behind him, whose black hair was tossed from the trip, and motioned toward her. "This…is my daughter."
"Asta Skírnisdóttir," Heimdall announced in a baritone voice. He yanked a 1.6-meter sword from a raised switch, and the bridge from which the two came, closed. "Welcome to Asgard."
How did he know her name? Asta raised a brow.
"Have we met before?"
Skírnir guffawed at her question; his voice echoed around the hall.
"Heimdall is all-seeing and all-hearing. He watches the realms from his perch here in Himinbjorg."
"That must be lonely," Asta uttered as she glanced around in interest; a grin from the golden-eyed man went unnoticed by her.
She was both captivated and terrified of Himinbjorg.
"Do you control the Bifrost, Heimdall?"
"I am merely a gatekeeper," he answered honestly. "It is with Hofund, the Bifrost Sword that I can activate the switch to the Bifrost, but the dimensional energy that is harnessed by the Rainbow Bridge is beyond my control."
Asta raised a curious brow. She had heard of the Rainbow Bridge before, a crystalline prismatic bridge that led to the Royal Palace of Valaskjalf, however, she was not aware that it was connected to the Bifrost via energy. Such a concept fascinated her; the technology was so advanced it seemed like magic, especially since the Vanir were not as advanced as the Æsir.
"What more can this energy–"
"Asta! Enough questions," Skírnir warned. "Leave Heimdall to his duties. We have business at the Royal Palace."
She tightened her jaw, wanting to learn more from the all-seeing, all-hearing gatekeeper, but her father was right. Asta bowed her head a bit.
"Apologies for my inquisitiveness."
"Another time Asta Skírnisdóttir," Heimdall responded.
With a thankful smile, she let her father lead, departing from Himinbjorg. As she stepped out into the warm sun, with her leather-clad feet planted on the renowned Rainbow Bridge her eyes widened in awe. In the distance, beyond the shimmering waters was an immense mountainscape with a sweeping valley at its base. Asta could make out a small town scattered along it with the golden organ-shaped palace behind it overlooking the bridge.
"Are you bewitched, daughter?" Skírnir guffawed.
"It is…nothing like I have ever seen," Asta admitted.
Skírnir knew that her knowledge of the realms extended only as far as Vanaheim and the stories he told. Her curiosity was bound to rise, especially since she was inquisitive by nature. She was like a child consumed by wonder and it filled the vassal with delight to see her drunk on it.
"There is much to see…and much to learn," he stated.
Asta agreed with a nod.
"The Rainbow Bridge is long. We have time."
"Spare this old man," Skírnir whined.
It was humorous to see a brute such as him blubber like a child, but Asta was relentless. She grinned and took her first step toward the Royal Palace of Valaskjalf, putting the mediocre life she knew to a halt for a moment of adventure.
-
"Are you serious?" Asta asked in disbelief. "Lord Odin can not be that old, can he?"
She was impressed, hanging onto every word her father told her. Their conversation had changed direction several times during their long walk; a new topic every 20 steps; Asta took notice, thinking it was because her father was too bored to center on one topic for too long. Despite this, she learned a few new tales.
One such tale centered around the royal family and their use of magic. Asta learned that of the two, Loki was considered well-versed in sorcery, though his talent was mostly wasted with cheap tricks at one's expense, Skírnir explained. Thor, on the other hand, could learn magic but chose not to. He was a warrior through and through, however, with Mjölnir, his hammer, he could harness magic; summoning bolts of lightning when he saw fit to use them.
The mere aspect of sorcery fascinated Asta. She wondered if she too could harness it, but as she expected, Skírnir changed the topic to Odin, for how much longer she wasn't sure. The front doors of Valaskjalf were nearly within reach of them.
"He was 492 when his father, Lord Bor defeated the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim over 4 millennia ago," Skírnir answered with a laugh, regarding her question. "You, my daughter, are but a millennia old."
Dark Elves?
Asta raised a curious brow. She felt like she had heard of them before, though she could not imagine where.
"Who are the Dark Elves?"
Skírnir tightened his jaw, then forced a laugh.
"I have done many hard tasks; fought vicious beasts and rode through flames, but I have never conquered the inquisitive nature of my daughter and her endless questions. Give this old man a break."
Asta huffed in response. She could see that he was avoiding the questions that he didn't want to answer. There was no reason for her to push them upon him because he would not respond regardless, so despite her annoyance, she opted to give him the break he suggested. Their journey had come to an end anyhow.
The two had, at last, reached the golden doors of the palace where two Einherjar Guards, Asgardian warriors dressed in protective armor with fabric capes and ornate helmets stood. Both carried double-tipped spears that were defensively lowered once they approached.
"We are expected, on orders of Lord Freyr of the Vanir," Skírnir announced. He grabbed the guard of the longsword worn on his hip; the silver pommel was carved with the ingwaz rune, a diamond with an x-shaped design in the center, a mark associated with Freyr.
The guards lifted their spears, then opened the doors to Valaskjalf to them. One of the Einherjar remained at his post as the other led Skírnir and his daughter through the ornate corridor to where Asta assumed Lord Odin waited.
The reality of the situation hit her in the face like a bucket of cold water.
I am going before the Allfather for the first time.
Asta felt her stomach churn with unease. The tales she had heard about Odin painted him as a wise man and a dedicated ruler who wanted peace in the realms. She couldn't shake the fear that she was not worthy of an audience with him.
"Father," she whispered. "Should I have remained outside? This business you have with Lord Odin is not mine to know."
"Nonsense. You mean no harm to Asgard. And besides, as soon we entered the palace he had eyes on us," Skírnir explained.
What did he mean? Asta glanced around but she did not see anyone. The halls were vacant except for her, Skírnir, and the guard, who led them to a set of double doors. He left them a moment, walking inside and concealing their view of the room.
Asta took a deep uneasy breath.
"I feel a bit faint."
Skírnir narrowed his eyes in concern and stood before her, resting his hands on her shoulders in comfort; the top of her head barely reached his shoulders.
"Be brave, daughter. When we approach the Hlidskjalf, Odin's throne, kneel in respect and remember to maintain eye contact."
Asta understood. She clenched and unclenched her fingers, then nodded her head. It did nothing to soothe her apprehensiveness.
The sound of the door opening made her heart erratic. Her father removed his hands and motioned for her to proceed, though before she took a step, the sound of wings halted her. Overhead two gorgeous black ravens flew into the room. Asta anxiously pursued.
They swiftly crossed the enormous hall and took roost on either side of the Hlidskjalf, on golden remnant stones fashioned onto the throne, depicting Skinfaxi and Hrimfaxi, horses of great importance that pulled Dagr and Nótt's chariots across the sky, the personifications of day and night.
And resting upon the throne was one Odin Borson with Gungnir, his golden spear in hand. His keen blue eye watched in interest as the vassal of Freyr and his daughter approached the base of the stairs and kneeled.
"Stand. I was expecting you…both of you."
Was he? Did he too have the power to see beyond the realm of the Æsir? Asta stood as ordered, though her legs were shaking in fear. Despite his elderly appearance; white hair and beard, the Allfather's presence was unnerving. It was in his eye, the authority he held.
"The Sword of Freyr," Odin announced, turning his eye to the longsword. "Its power is…immeasurable. Able to fight on its own, a fine weapon."
"Not as fine as Gungnir, My Lord," Skírnir retorted.
The Allfather grinned.
"This is the reason your service as vassal proceeds you; a crafty Vanir…if that is what you are."
Asta raised a curious brow. What did Odin mean? Whatever he might have been implying was ignored by Skírnir, but not by Asta. She would be sure to ask him should she be given a chance.
Turning his eye to her, Odin watched her buckle beneath his curious stare.
"Leave us, would you, my dear?"
Asta knew the Allfather was not asking. She hesitantly bowed and then turned and sauntered toward the door. Outside, she stood against the wall, more confused and nervous than ever. Was the Allfather short with her? She felt as though she wasn't meant to be here.
With an unsteady breath, she leaned her head back. This entire visit was not what she had been envisioning. Asgard was marvelous, more than words could describe, but standing in front of the Allfather felt like a trial.
Perhaps it was.

AU where instead of going through this really complicated path to world domination, Loki just grabs the Tesseract and uses it to return to the Sanctuary, and in exchange for handing it over Thanos lets him go home, so after a year of mourning and moving on and all that Thor walks into Himinbjorg with Sif and the Warriors Three ready to go on a fun lil Bifrost Journey™ to massacre the neighbors in the name of freedom and instead they find Loki having a whole ass mental breakdown and Heimdall just awkwardly standing there like "please take your brother I don't know what to do he's been crying for 20 minutes"

Lately I’ve been playing exclusively in my kids’ creative world where I’ve been building things in for them to explore. We named it ‘The Nine Realms’ because right next to spawn I built this floating hub. I call it ‘Himinbjorg’, after a reference to the home of the Norse god Heimdallr, and each of the 8 rainbow-colored-towers has a command block that will teleport them to a different far-off biome, or “Realm”. Each Realm in turn has a command block that will teleport them back to Himinbjorg, allowing them to explore and play in a variety of different biomes without having to physically travel there.

Roll the Dice (B.B)
Summary:
Then.
After an argument with your mother, you rage-search for a new job, eventually landing on the homepage of your local county and off the cuff, apply for an opening at the library you frequented as a child.
Your first day on the job changed your life. A few years later, you got your Master’s in Library Science, and left your hometown...
…and you ended up in Manhattan at the New York Public Library, a few blocks from a certain Tower.
And after meeting the Black Widow herself, Natasha Romanoff, when she, Captain America, the Falcon, Wanda, and Thor came to do a program for the kids one weekend, Nat and Captain Rogers (“Please, call me Steve.”) invited you back to the Tower to meet the rest of the team.
And the rest, as they say, is history…
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x female!reader
Word Count: 3490
Warnings: fluff.
A/N: I haven’t written anything in almost three(?) years.  I just stopped.  But then, I sat down in March 2021 to watch The Falcon & the Winter Soldier and my brain started poking me to write so many different plot bunnies, y’all have no idea.  I was inspired to actually finish something thanks to @pellucid-constellations #LoveLettersWritingChallenge.
I am new to writing reader insert fic, so I wrote what I know and that’s being Latina.  I am constantly reading up on how to make reader insert fics more inclusive, so I will try to make it less specific next time I write.  However, once again, I am Latina so that might come up now and again, while I get used to writing all inclusively.
Also, thanks to @beefybuckrrito for all the help in beta-ing this oneshot!  You the best queen!  Another shout out to my girl Col @foreverindreamlandd for no reason other than she’s awesome!

(Metal anon) I listened to the albums you recommended! Unfortunately I didn't enjoy Nekrogoblikon very much, but I did like Yekteniya, The Black Waltz, and Feathers & Flesh! And I wanted to ask if you've ever listened to Avantasia, Orden Ogan, or Dream Evil? I've mostly listened to symphonic and power metal so I've been trying to branch out and your recommendations helped!
I have seen Avantasia live before I think! I'm familiar with Orden Ogan too, if you're interested in exploring more black metal (since you liked batushka) I would suggest Himinbjorg! They're really different and I find them so interesting to listen to. Same with anything Gaahl's worked on tbh!
Nekrogoblikon isn't for everyone and that's ok too! I find them very manic which works well with my adhd styles, and I love goblins

Output: 1914.
Part 3: "Teuton's Battle Song" Continues -
Cries of pain (&) roars of... rage,
One vast symphony (my) ears engage.
Strike down... whoever bars your way;
Let each (man) kill,
(Before) he dies today!
Ride over the weak;
Accomplish what you can;
Gods are kind... to the strongest man!
Why should we fear?
What greater joy than this?
Asgard alone... gives (a) sweeter bliss!
My strength is waning;
Dimly I see
Valkyries close to me.
How strange the thought of fear,
With Woden's... messengers near!
Darkness comes (&) my spirit rise(s);
Kind Valkyrie bear me (up) to the sk(y).
Conscience clear,
I quit the earth below,
Woden's hall (will I) know.
Grove of Glasir¹... shall I behold,
On Valhalla's tablets be enrolled:
There til Heimdall's² horn shall sound,
And Ragnarok creation (sur)round,
Bifrost³ breaks beneath... Surtur's⁴ horde,
Gods & men fall beneath the sword;
The sun shall die,
And sea devour (all) land,
Stars decend & chaos stand(s).
Then, Alfadur makes his realm anew,
(To) Gods & men
(A) purer life is due.
In that country shall Abundance reign,
Nor shall... vice or woe... remain.
Then shall battle cease
And happiness prevail
(For) evermore.
Notes:
1. Glasir (gleaming) is a tree grove with golden red leaves that lies just outside of Valhalla.
2. Heimdall (illuminator of the world), the main watch guard of Asgard, has keen senses of sight & sound.
Himinbjorg (mountain castle), his home, is located where Bifrost meets the sky.
3. Bifrost (shimmering path) is the rainbow 'bridge' that connects Earth with the heavens.
However, this rainbow only has 3 colors! The red in the bridge is actually fires meant to keep the Jotnar (giants) away.
But, that defense will fail against Surtur's army...
Scholars think that it represents the Milky Way.
4. Surtur (swarty or black one) is a fire Jotunn (man? eaters) who wields a flaming sword.
He guards Muspellheim's (world wreckers) frontier & will lead an army to destroy Asgard - after personally defeating Freyr.
The flames from Asgard's destruction spread out & engulf the whole world!!
Flames that only go out when the Earth sinks in the sea...
PS: Commentary to follow in Part 4.

Pics: "Teuton's Battle-Song."
1 & 2. A modern look at Anglo-Saxon warriors. These are based on what has been found by archaeologists.
Info comes in from A-S writings, art & what survived to be excavated.
Still, some 'educated' guesses help fill in for what is missing...
3. Shows the gradual withdrawal of Roman forces from Britain.
Also, early raiding by armed groups from around the island & from foreign ports in Europe.
4. Where the mass migrations came - mostly from Germanic tribes.
Successful early attacks became mass migrations of whole 'nations.'
These landings quickly spread out & took control of the southern & middle of the island.
This was early "England" (land of the Anglos)...
The whole island wouldn't be united until after the Norman conquest...
5 & 6. Modern (digital?) versions of Surtur, whose fiery sword closes out the Norse divine era.
For writers out there, this story needs to be continued - in the Balder Era.
Jack Kirby took a swing at it in his New God's storyline.
Anybody else?
7 thru 9. Surtur's horde of demon warriors - from the "Thor: Ragnarok" movie.
Marvel changed the original Norse stories - but, I think it worked out...
Spectacularly.
Next: Part 4 - Commentary.
