Hey Lune, you got your username from Land of the Lustrous, right?
I was thinking about it and just had a thought:
Chuuya == Cinnabar
Tumblr media
Dazai == Phosphophylite
Tumblr media
Chuuya and Cinnabar are just too alike with their highly destructive abilities, but my only logic for Dazai is "Phos gets damaged a lot plus gay ships."
But yeah, just a cool thought I wanted to share because your user made me think of that awesome anime again ^^
HI THIS AU HAS CONSUMED MY EVER WAKING THOUGHTS TY SM FOR SHARING THIS YIUVE OPNENED MY EYES SM I MADE A LITTLE BIT OF LORE AND ART FOR IT IF YIU DONT MIND!!! SPRRY THIS TOK SO LONG I WAS BUSY W UNI AND I WAS ONLY ABLE TO RLY DRAW MORE NOW
OKOK SO!!! Since you said you weren’t that attached to Dazai being a Phosphophylite I thought him being a Lapis would actually be more fitting! Since they were known for in the manga for their immense intelligence curiosity, moral ambiguity and being generally hard to read! Which I feel fits him rly well!
As for Chuuya as Cinnabar yiure SO CORRECT, so I propose that he’s a weirdly mutated batch of it that actually has his poison (?) contained inside his body, in order to use it he actually needs to break, (like when he uses corruption cough cough) he’s the strongest fighter in their school and since he obviously wanted to protect everyone he would often abuse his ability, which is harmful because I’m order to use it he needs to literally break himself + the poison in of itself is corrosive and actively damages him everytime he uses it ASIDE from destroying everything around him!
It’s really effective for killing Lunerians but it also means he often shouldered the burden of protecting everyone alone because he rly can’t use it with people around him, and I imagine the others in the school would really look up to Chuuya as the strongest, kinda like they do Bort in canon! So they wouldn’t rly see this was harming him cuz he wouldn’t want them to know cuz he would feel this would be letting them down
Which is where Dazai comes in, I think he would originally not be a fighter type, I think he used to work at the school in research and strategy without actually being in the battle field, up until he encounters Chuuya and takes an interest in him bcz ofc he does. He’d be the first person to actually really see what’s going on with Chuuya overworking himself and breaking himself for the sake of the others, and I think he would step in by becoming Chuuyas partner, which Chuuya obviously wouldn’t want but we all know how persistent and cunning Dazai is so he somehow get his way
As for why he wanted to be Chuuyas partner in the first place? Because he wanted Chuuya to stop breaking himself and he knew that him being there achieved two things 1. Chuuya cannot use corruption because Dazai would be near him, and 2. Chuuya wouldn’t have to use corruption because Dazai would be there to come up with attack strategies on the fly
And this double black would be born!
(Also a fun side effect of Lapis Dazai is we get the red and blue symbolism back)
EDIT: BTW DAZAI ENDS UP ASKING YOSANO TO TEACH HIM HEALING CUZ HE KNOWS CHUUYA ISNT COMFORTABLE BEING WEAK IN FRONT OF THE OTHERS SO THAT WAY DAZAI HAS STITCH HIM BACK UP ON THE RARE OCCASION ITS ACTUALLY NECESSARY TO USE CORRUPTION
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway tysm for this ask! It’s honestly been a rly fun au to think abt :)!!!

THIS IS LONG AS FUCK LMAO IM SO SORRY IN ADVANCE I REALLY JUST STARTED YAPPING but i saw your post abt mota characters being underdeveloped compared to other hbo war shows and had some Thoughts
this is something i’ve heard mentioned on a couple reviews from historian guys on youtube and podcasts etc. i’m honestly not sure how much of it is intentional and how much of it is a result of weird pacing and writing decisions made due to budget cuts or episode numbers being reduced or whatever but it is something i thought was interesting:
basically the way the show treats its characters is kinda reflective of the way the air war itself was for the men involved: at first you’d would arrive on base and make close friends and develop rapport with each other a la buck bucky curt croz etc. but then the attrition sets in - someone like curt dies, more and more crews disappear, and on base it’s like they never existed. you get jaded. it becomes harder to get close to the new guys because you know they’re more than likely gonna be dead after the next mission, or you will be, and they’ll have to deal with losing you. this is kinda reflected in the scene after buck n bucky meet rosie. ‘when we go down they won’t remember us either’ etc.
the show kinda does this with the characters it introduces. u meet the main guys in the beginning and get sort of familiar with them, enough to be attached, and then curt fucking dies. if you aren’t well versed in the real history (like i wasn’t) then you have no damn idea who’s surviving to the end, and that makes you approach the remaining leads a little differently. when buck goes down you don’t really know if you’ll see him again. ‘they wouldn’t kill him it’s austin butler’ but they killed barry keoghan already soooo maybe they will? maybe bucky is the main lead now? it’s hard to know who’s safe to stay invested in.
and then obviously we follow bucky through his little romp through germany and then the stalag, (which is tense as fuck because WE DONT KNOW IF HES SAFE NARRATIVELY SPEAKING) but when it switches back to base there’s no mention of him or buck after the initial loss. like they never existed. we get rosie and croz, and a bunch of brand new crews who we mostly don’t recognize and who blend together so easily we have no idea if they survive or not because we don’t care and neither does the show. there is not space to care (diagetically if youre a pilot because you stop putting effort in to get acquainted w them just to lose someone again, and irl because the show stops putting effort in to distinguish them from each other).
guys we even sort of recognize or give a fuck about like nash die immediately. or (this one is kinda a stretch bc obviously their storyline getting forgotten about probably isn’t intentional but) with quinn and bailey when their plot gets dropped you can look at it like the guys on base who cared about them have also died or been shot down, so they’re no longer important to follow. and when buck returns to base in 9 who greets him? croz and rosie. almost nobody else who remembers him is still around. they either died or went to the stalag with him, or to other ones like it.
the show essentially ends up mirroring its characters: starting out with the promise of brotherhood and wartime camaraderie and friendship etc etc and then having it UTTERLY SHATTERED by the realities of the kind of war they are fighting.
it’s honestly fascinating to me. i’ve very rarely experienced a show with a supposedly ensemble cast at the start where the ensemble aspect kind of just gets destroyed and the characters are all killed or permanently split up partway through.
yeah that’s interesting and you have good points. I wasn’t really talking about their bonds with each other though, more so their individual character arcs and personality traits that were often shallow or not fleshed out entirely. I understand not having much of a supporting cast because these men were so expendable, but there were characters like macon and alex etc. who could’ve been given more to do. people have even argued (I don’t know if I entirely agree) that buck and bucky had shallow characterization as well. I think it’s good that you can find that kind of meaning in the show but I don’t think the show does that great of a job at hitting home these points and kind of just arrives there incidentally
then there’s the question of why even adapt this material if it’s not very well suited for a narrative story in the first place. and people can argue about that I’m not gonna touch it lol
but I see your point. I just don’t think the show was that intentional about the way it handled its character arcs. it feels more like things just falling by the wayside than intentional thematic choices

How do you think Sirius and James’ relationship is viewed/understood by Lily? And how does it affect her relationship with James and vice versa?
Hey anon! So I feel like it’s important to start by mentioning the way that I engage with HP in general, which is sort of blending canon and interpretation. I essentially take characterisation and dynamics very very seriously but outside of that as long as you stay true to characters and their dynamics, I think specific events and circumstances are kind of free game? Hence why I’m so into j/s, because it’s such a fundamental aspect of James & Sirius as individuals in canon (whereas I don’t feel James and Lily are fundamental to each other’s characters? We just know they’re married). I feel like reading my blog people might think I’m trying to argue that it IS canon but my stance is more that “canon presents it in such a way that it would work” - which canon doesn’t establish for say remus/sirius in my opinion but it does for james/sirius.
Which brings me to my point about how I read james/lily (and what their relationship is like), which is that I find the romance there to be so vastly lacking that I find it easier and more interesting to read them as platonic, and I actually really like them as besties/bros - there’s a lot of potential there. A lot of james/lily requires you to work backwards from what you know about them as a pair which is:
they argued in Snape’s Worst Memory and Lily seems disgusted by James who says he likes her but goes out of his way to torment her best friend
Lily gives him the time of day when “James deflated his head a bit”
they get married
It’s very functional and unromantic BUT I think the things that you can work backwards from do support a nurturing friendship. The old Jily trope is that they get to know each other as Head Boy and Girl which is a fair shout. Harry has no grandparents to take him in when they die so we know that they both lose both of their parents at a young age and I think they would be valuable to each other in understanding that. I also think it’s interesting how Lily apparently has a thing for like, horrible boys. She’s friends with Snape for a long time, then she just sort of moves onto a different flavour of horrible in James, supposedly, and her relationship with James extends to accepting and loving the also horrible Sirius. (My fav iteration of Lily and Horrible Boy is Lily/Regulus but nobody asked that.) So even when I’m talking james/lily within canon, they’re based on this ultimately platonic dynamic that I think canon gives us, which is ironic because it’s james and sirius’ strong platonic closeness in canon that made me take that leap to reading them romantically, but w/e I do what I want. tl;dr: a long-winded way to acknowledge my bias.
Within canon, it’s clear that Lily loved Sirius as her friend separate from James, as we can see in the letter she writes to him in DH. I actually think James and Sirius’ friendship would remind her a lot of her early friendship with Snape, but she’d look at it more like “this is what we would have been like if he hadn’t been a Death Eater” or maybe “this is what a real friendship is like” :( But rather than being jealous I feel like she’d be very…supportive of James and Sirius’ relationship and happy to see it thriving. Similarly, if we’re talking canon, I think she’d see it through the lens of “they’re like brothers” and be reminded of what her relationship could have been like with Petunia and she’d be pleased to see a healthy friendship/brotherly bond.
However I can’t mention James and Sirius without talking about how their bond transcends other friendships in the series so I do think maybe just how close they are might come as a shock to her. She’d have seen them being close all through school but from the outside I’m sure that would look like a typical friendship, especially if she’d had Snape as her own best friend for so long, but coming into their fold and maybe noticing how in sync they are and how strongly they respect each other and take each other’s word would be like an “oh, wow, right” moment for her that could even be a bit isolating and lonely and a point of comparison for how James acts with Sirius vs with her. But, again, I think that level of loyalty and trust would seem like a positive thing to Lily having been shunned by her sister as soon as she was different and being publicly called a slur and humiliated by her friend who had known her longer than he’d known the dark magic crowd he was getting into.
In terms of affecting her relationship with James, I think Lily would just throw herself into getting to know Sirius in her own right so she could join in lmao, based on how friendly and familiar she is with Sirius I think that’s likely. I also think she would meet James and Sirius on their level more naturally than anyone else trying to get in with them would. Lily has shades of cruelty like they do, she knows exactly what to say to hurt both Petunia and Snape when she wants to, and idk I can see that working in her favour with them, it would align her with them vs say Remus who would make James and Sirius “feel bad about it sometimes”. At the end of SWM, Lily joins in with them and uses the nickname they’ve been bullying her friend with for years, which I think supports that.
Based on her friendship with Snape, I think she’d be at peace with their closeness, maybe a bit wistful about not quite having that herself but being happy to be part of something. I wish we knew more about Lily’s friends - we hear she’s popular, but we only know for certain she was close friends with Snape and some random girls she’s with at the start of SWM. None of her friends (except Snape) appear in the series. Nobody talks to Harry about Lily except his teachers and Sirius and Remus barely, because it’s via discussing James, and Petunia offers nothing. I think it’s really sad but JKR is pretty shit at fleshing out female characters anyway.
Lily evidently understands James and Sirius’ bond as like an emotional necessity, not to sound dramatic, because her letter to Sirius is very explicit in being like James is struggling and it’s because he’s not seeing you, please come and visit. That said, I don’t like James/Sirius where like Lily just puts up with them being together behind her back and ignores it because she loves James, and I don’t like Sirius/James/Lily as a romantic threesome because I don’t think Lily gets much out of that to be honest. A fundamental part of James and Sirius is how they’re paired up in the text so on a romantic level that translates into a codependent, lowkey obsessive, one-true-love kind of thing to me and there’s not room for anyone else. Non-monogamous relationships are valid ofc but it’s not something I read as particularly functional with James and Sirius being the way they are.
Thank you for this ask! I loved talking about Lily, she was my first love of the Marauder Era and half of the reason I know SWM so well is because I used to act it out as Lily in my bedroom when I was 9 or 10 lol <3

MLQC Lucien - NSFW abc headcanons
Sorry I was gone for so long. I was busy doing hot girl shit.
Fandom: Mr. Love: Queen's Choice
Warnings: S.M.U.T.  (the reader is gender neutral, but I quote Lucien’s “silly girl” at one point so idk)
Tumblr media
A = Aftercare (what they’re like after sex)
It’s probably because of this relationship you two have. One that Lucien thought he could never have.
Frankly, he didn’t really want one. Even with you.
But it was impossible to stop himself from jumping into that rabbit whole.
You are not even a human for him. You are far superior.
A goddess.
A greater being that must be worshiped. Cherished. LOVED THOROUGHLY and Lucien can't stop himself from doing all that.
He would help you clean up with so much care. Hold you like he’s about to lose you. Wisper praises and declarations of love into your ear.
Prefers to stay in bed, but wouldn’t mind to do it in a bath either.
B = Body part (their favorite body part of theirs and also their partner’s)
He never really gave it much thought, but if you’d ask him, he would probably say - his neck.
Because he noticed how much attention you give it. That given a choice you would always kiss and bite on the neck.
And the unreformable tease he is - he loves your ears.
The way you twitch and squirm when he licks the or softly blows around them. The way you flush when he leans in to whisper directly to it.
All those small reactions get his blood pumping.
C = Cum (anything to do with cum, basically)
A big fan of cuming onto you.
Your ass is his staple favorite, but chest, stomach, back or… basically anywhere else is not bad at all either.
If he ever comes inside you without a condom… and gets to see his seed dripping out of you… IT’S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL CHANGE OF PERSPECTIVE FOR HIM.
Nothing can beat the look of his seed spilled on your pretty butt, BUT… damn that’s a nice sight.
D = Dirty secret (pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)
He doesn’t believe that some deeds can be dirty or naughty.
He's a scientist. Explorer of human's brain. He knows that every single of those is a normal, human thing.
But given that we all know what is this question all about…
Lucien really liked to draw when he was a kid and he still does it from time to time.
And what else could he sketch in his free time if not the most beautiful creation of this world? You. Naked.
He has countless amounts of those at this point. Every part of you has a separate piece. He likes to go through them from time to time.
Meaning every day when you're not around.
E = Experience (how experienced are they? do they know what they’re doing?)
Lucien is not a virgin but he had never been in a real relationship before you.
He had some one night stands. A few booty call relationships, but he had never been with someone the way he is with you.
So you were still a challenge, because he could not allow himself any shortcomings when it came to you.
F = Favorite position (this goes without saying)
That’s a spoiler for the future, but Lucien is more than willing to try everything and he doesn’t really feel any special bond with a particular position.
However he does have a particular group and if you remember what I said in C above, you know where I’m going.
From behind. Seeing your butt shake. He’s an ass man. (would love to try anal if you’d show an intrest in that)
Major bonus points if you turn your head to the side and look at him. With your lovely, beautiful face that he loves oh so much.
He instantly speeds up to the point that no man should ever reach and will happily carry you around for a day or two - you’ll need it.
Because after that there could never be only one round. Or even two or three.
G = Goofy (are they more serious in the moment? are they humorous? etc.)
I wouldn’t call it goofy.
It’s very intense. Almost in a spiritual sense.
For Lucien sex is a metter of high importance. There’s no room for fooling around.
He needs to focus, so afterwards you’re completely spent, blissed and fucked to the point where you could never enjoy sex with any other man.
Toxic trait of this cutesy otome boy - possessiveness, and although he won’t try to control what and with who you do...
(the man has some dignity and respect for your autonomy)
He will make sure you won’t be able to forget who makes you feel so f*in' good and being ‘goofy’ won’t make the statement.
H = Hair (how well groomed are they? does the carpet match the drapes? etc.)
I think Lucien would be somewhat groomed, but not bold.
Shaving just isn’t natural and therefore necessarily good for one’s body.
Therefore, if you shave he might try to convince you to stop.
I want to touch a woman, not a girl - he would say.
Carpet matches the drapes (however I like to think that Lucien has ginger pubes dontjudgeme)
I = Intimacy (how are they during the moment? the romantic aspect)
Said first in A, now will be more specific.
With Lucien sex is some kind of a ritual of worship.
It’s a sacrifice for his goddess. His energy, his time, his most attentive care.
Love beams from his eyes even stronger than light does from the sun.
The foreplay will be elongated. You need to come at least twice before he enters you (see T).
During he roams your body with his hands. Boldly, but not aggressively… unless you’d like it.
Afterwards… well, just read A again.
J = Jack off (masturbation headcanon)
He’s a very busy man, so he doesn’t get many chances, but…
When he can he’s right at it… thinking of that pretty ass of yours.
K = Kink (one or more of their kinks)
Lucien is quite kinky.
He's in for anything that doesn’t go under N conditions. Anything.
Likes bondage. No. He loves it. On you. And blindfolds.
SPANKING.
DOM BOY, but wouldn’t mind to go sub from time to time for you.
You want you to submit thoroughly, so he can thoroughly please you. Give you all that can be given.
Lives for roleplaying.
He also is really into body worship. He will praise you to the point of incredibility.
See T gir. It’s really an intense game.
Lives to hear you beg for him.
L = Location (favorite places to do the do)
He likes to be in a private, comfortable place, when he doesn’t have to worry about any interruptions or other inconveniences.
Best in your or his place.
M = Motivation (what turns them on, gets them going)
First of all he really needs no convincing.
BUT.
The beast is awake momentarily when you wear his clothes. Like his sweater when you're cold. Or a shirt after a passionate night.
"You make a very nice sight indeed."
Other thing is lingerie. He likes it dark and erotic. Satin and straps. Maybe some nice, sheer mesh.
N = No (something they wouldn’t do, turn offs)
No humiliating one another.
Nothing that even comes close to making you feel like he might have attempted to disrespect you.
Also - no outsiders.
And no hiding one another's fantasies. He’s there to please and satisfy you. Don’t take it away from him.
O = Oral (preference in giving or receiving, skill, etc.)
Eghem.
Can you stay up all night
Fuck me till the daylight
34+35
If you don't get it yet, it means he wants to 69 with you.
All night. Every night.
The taste of you in his mouth is heavenly.
The feeling and sight of your mouth enveloping his groin is pure ecstasy.
P = Pace (are they fast and rough? slow and sensual? etc.)
He doesn’t have much of a fav.
It all depends on his mood.
Q = Quickie (their opinions on quickies, how often, etc.)
Meh...
It’s not like an unacceptable option, but he prefers delayed gratification.
Will agree if you insist, but won’t ever offer.
R = Risk (are they game to experiment? Do they take risks? etc.)
OF COURSE. YES. PLEASE.
Why would he ever limit himself to known and obvious, when there might be something far, far superior to what both of you already know.
He enjoys erotic literature. Sometimes reads online articles about interesting positions, toys or new ways to make you come harder and faster.
Won’t shy away from many things. Just remember about what I said in N.
S = Stamina (how many rounds can they go for? how long do they last?)
This man rarely sleeps. Rarely even rests.
This man is a rabbit.
It's more likely you will pass out of exhaustion then that he will take a break from fucking you. Weather it's with his hands, dick, lips or… other things.
T = Toys (do they own toys? do they use them? on a partner or themselves?)
Speaking of other things.
And fucking.
Lucien invested in a nice collection for the two of you. Vibrators. Rings. Suckers.
He likes to please you in every way he can.
While the toys take care of you, you suck onto him.
Sometimes you just embrace yourself as the toys take care of your needs. And you go like this for hours. Until you can't take it anymore.
And let's not forget the bondage equipment. Ropes, handcuffs, blindfolds, gags, whips….
U = Unfair (how much they like to tease)
Obvi. What did you expect?
A lot.
For hours.
Until all you’re able to say is “Lucien” and “Please”.
Edging is not negotiable. Happens every time. Often to the point when you come so fast and unexpectedly he just couldn’t stop on time.
Will talk dirty to your ear in public to then “accidently” stroke your nipple or if he feels particularly bold that day - your crotch.
V = Volume (how loud they are, what sounds they make, etc.)
Not shy at all. No shame.
Will moan, groan, pant and hiss all he wants and as loudly as he wants.
Let the neighbors hear. Why would he feel ashamed of fucking you?
LOVES when you do the same.
W = Wild card (a random headcanon for the character)
He would love to take you for a weekend trip. In the mountains. Renting a nice cottage.
Necessarily with a fireplace. And a jacuzzi.
He would have it decorated with many, many gleaming candles. Set all around the cottage.
The soothing music would play.
His fingers would play with your sex while you soak yourselfs in the jacuzzi.
Then he would lay you on a soft carpet in front of the fireplace and make love to you. True, unmistakable love.
It would be a trip to remember for the rest of your lives.
X = X-ray (let’s see what’s going on under those clothes)
First off all, see this meme.
He just emanuates that massive dick energy. That’s just facts. No one in the bunch can relate. I’m sorry stans of the other 4, it’s not my fault, don’t @ me.
Y = Yearning (how high is their sex drive?)
High. Very high sometimes.
Okay - usually very high, sometimes extremely high.
All nighters will happen at least once a week unless one of you really has a tough week or just had one and still tries to get everything together.
Otherwise no mercy. His lover needs to have all her needs fulfilled. Lucien would never allow you to walk around hungry or cold. Why would he let you be unsatisfied in this category, silly girl?
Z = Zzz (how quickly they fall asleep afterwards)
Not right away for sure.
He wants to watch you fall asleep. And then see those cutest expressions you make in your slumber.
Sometimes he just grabs a book and holds your hand until you wake up.
Other times he isn't able to resist it and falls asleep. You in his arms. His world at peace.

Hi I just finished Banana Fish and am IN PAIN
Long story short, for those of you who don’t want spoilers—
I actually liked this show a lot more than I thought I would. I’d recommend it to others, but only if you’re prepared for some anxiety-driven and uncomfortable scenes/episodes. The amount of times I’ve screamed at this show shouldn’t be legal. So consider yourself warned.
Tumblr media
Also, because there are very heavy themes that are prevalent throughout the show, this post will discuss themes that may be triggering for others. Below is a quick overview of some of these topics:
Rape
Sexual assault
Homophobia
Violence
Street violence
Murder
Forced Separation
Sexual Trauma
Please be aware: there are massive spoilers for Banana Fish below.
Tumblr media
LET MY GAY MAFIA BABIES BE HAPPY?!
THAT WAS SUCH A FUCKING STUPID AND POINTLESS DECISION ON BEHALF OF THE AUTHORS AT THE END?
LIKE
WTF?!
W H Y
LET ASH BE HAPPY!!!!!!
LET EIJI BE HAPPY!!!!!!
LET THEM LIVE TOGETHER IN JAPAN AND LEARN TO HEAL TOGETHER!!!!
Tumblr media
LET ASH FUCKING HEAL AND GROW OLD WITH THE MAN HE ACTUALLY LOVES!!!
LET HIM HAVE A FAMILY THAT ACTUALLY CARES ABOUT HIM?!!!!
LET HIM FUCKING BE HAPPY FOR FUCK’S SAKE LIKE IDK WHAT THE POINT WAS AND I’M MAD BECAUSE IT WASN’T EVEN SENSICAL AND ALSO RANDOM AND AND AND AND
Anyway hi in case you can’t tell I’ve gotten very emotionally invested in this mafia show despite usually not liking that genre, and I really loved some aspects of the show while also hating other aspects of it. I still have mixed feelings but one thing's for sure: this story is enthralling and nail biting. I never once felt like I was bored with the storyline or the characters, and I was ensnared until the very end.
Something I love
How much Eiji and Ash love each other
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Something I hate
The perpetuation of harmful stereotypes regarding the LGBTQ+ community.
Like, I couldn’t stop hating how much this show really relies on older men raping younger boys, which I know is something that happens, but I think it would have been worth representing female characters doing this as well. Instead, by only presenting the audience with male characters, it perpetuates the stereotypes that gay people are:
Rapists
Child rapists
Perverts
And it’s a core part of the show. Banana Fish wouldn’t exist in the way it does if Ash’s trauma hadn’t affected the way he sees the world and feels about himself. It’s also an important part of the real world that has been notoriously ignored and unspoken. However, by exclusively placing men in the positions of power, it leans heavily into that idea that gay men are predatory. I also feel as though it would have been better to represent this issue and bring proper attention to the scale of it by having women present in these positions of power. Because boys and men can be raped, but I think it’s important to remind the audience that rapists are not exclusively men, either.
Additionally, where the fuck are the female characters? There are 24 episodes and I can only think of three female characters that are named and mentioned more than once. +1 for racial inclusitivioty, -1 for gender exclusion.
Something I love
This is connected to my above critique in a way, but I really do appreciate how this show sheds light on male rape survivors. It’s a topic that is unfortunately not spoken of and dismissed far too much.
Additionally, I appreciate the attention that’s given to rape survivors in general, especially when Ash and Jessica talk to each other about their recovery periods. It’s a powerful moment, and I think that they addressed Jessica’s rape in a way that wasn’t invalidating any of Ash’s suffering. They create a bond of support for each other in a very short period of time, which I really love.
Something I kinda hate
There’s some fucked up shit in this anime, which is fine, I’m used to that, but the focal point of the show being the drug called Banana Fish loses a lot of focus in the second season. I found many plot loopholes in this season, which really drive me up a wall.
Also, wtf is up with the lack of explaining the passage of time?
Something I REALLY LOVE
I really appreciate how much praise Ash is given for his intelligence, not by any of the fuckers who hurt him, but by his friends and his boyfriend. He’s a fucking genius who is a former sex worker, and the attention this show calls for in regards to sex worker rights is amazing.
Another aspect of this show that I love is how Ash is shown to be special because he is able to love others, despite what he’s gone through. He’s willing to love and be loved, rather than be ruled by hatred. And I think that’s really damn beautiful.
Tumblr media
Something small that I’m not a fan of
I’m not a fan of how little we saw of Yut-Lung in season two. I think he’s a fascinating character that deserves a lot more attention, and didn’t get the same chance to really shine as Arthur in season one, despite being presented as the “new main minor antagonist.” I wanted to see so much more of him actually doing things rather than having other people do it for him.
Something small that I really love
How Ash and Eiji’s relationship shifts from being seen as a true weakness to being a source of strength. Eiji gives Ash the feeling of being a normal person. But Ash revives Eiji’s passion and drive, enabling him to do things he never would have had the guts to do otherwise.
Tumblr media
Another unrelated thing that I ADORE is the unabashed slander of the US government and White House. It's beautiful, and I love how much corruption is shown throughout.
Tumblr media
I’m legitimately mad at this show, though. The ending is nonsensical and serves no purpose other than to bury a gay character and ruin what could have been the most beautiful resolution to a fucked up life. There’s no lesson behind it. Ash literally felt as though him being at Eiji’s side would have jeopardized his safety, and had legitimate reasons to fear that that would be the case. Then, when Ash finally cracks and starts to run to the airport because he doesn’t want to let fear control him anymore, he gets fucking stabbed because he “let his guard down”? That’s fucking cheap, lazy writing, and I hate that a story that enthralled me so much for the past few DAYS would end on such a pointless note. I wouldn’t be nearly as upset about Ash dying as I am if it had been for a reason. If Ash had died while saving the hostages, then Eiji’s letter was read by Sing, that would have been a much more powerful and effective ending. Instead, the authors decided to be cowards. I also wouldn’t be nearly as upset if the image of birds would have had a role in the last few minutes of the show. It would have tied up the story so much better, especially since Ash always associates Eiji with being able to fly.
Long story short I’m mad because I’m disappointed in the 1) lack of female characters in general and 2) lackluster ending to what would otherwise have been one of my favorite shows. But damn, what a ride.
PS thanks @ Eiji for giving Ash the hugs I wanted to give him

nsfw a-z YOSHI (treasure)
🔅 for @ateezwhorez i hope you enjoy this honey 🥺❤️ dw the others should be written soon tooooo 🔅
A = Aftercare (what they’re like after sex)
he just feels cuddly and swoony. he’s in love with you, even more so than before even though he didn’t think that was possible. he loves to cuddle with you, just until you catch your breath again at least. he’s still still high from the whole experience, it’s the perfect time to be open and show your vulnerability even more. it’s less about the physical things he does for you, more about how you two deepen your relationship even further. he uses this time to have deep chats that slowly fade into more light hearted conversations before drifting off to sleep.
B = Body part (their favorite body part of theirs and also their partner’s)
his eyes are his favourite thing about him i think. he likes how you can understand what he wants just from looking into them. they’re intense and needy, oppressive even. they’re infatuating. they’re his secret weapon to make you obey him without even realising what you’re doing.
on you, he likes your lips. he likes how they feel on his own lips, on his neck, around his dick, anywhere and everywhere. he also just thinks they look pretty and are the perfect colour naturally, actually something he noticed about you first which he found really attractive.
C = Cum (anything to do with cum, basically)
doesn’t like to make a mess at first… might even cum in a tissue the first few times because he thinks it’s more respectful.
but when he’s comfortable and such, he’d love to cum all over your hands after you finished him off with a handjob, he thinks it looks really hot and it’s enough to get him horny again hehe.
D = Dirty secret (pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)
he often imagines how you'd look tied up in front of him. at his disposal. his fantasies are actually super kinky but he very rarely tells you them. he’d probably never tie you up to the extent that he dreams of doing because he doesn’t want to hurt you and he thinks of you as quite fragile 🥺
i wanna do another because my wild card was kinda short this time but he would l o v e to do a life drawing of you. like this isn’t even sexual but i don’t wanna get attacked if i write this on something that is fluff lol. it would be something that he’d treasure and something that he would be so proud of. to make it dirty since it’s a dirty secret 👀 he had a few intrusive thoughts while he drew you and found it super hard to stay hyperfocused on the drawing. if you tried to flirt with him while modelling, he’d just tell you to save it for later and that’s when he’d unleash the beast lol.
E = Experience (how experienced are they? do they know what they’re doing?)
1 sexual partner with whom he was in a relationship with. he doesn’t think about it much and when he’s with you, he’s very much focused on you. one look at you and he’s forgotten about them already.
he knows what he’s doing for the most part, but sometimes he just wants to learn new things with you, together.
F = Favorite position (this goes without saying)
he likes facing you: missionary and cowgirl, depending on what feels natural at the time. he likes bringing his face close to yours and hovering his lips over yours, occasionally touching with every thrust. enough to feel the other’s breath, but not enough to actually kiss.
once the pace has slowed a little, he’ll give you the kiss he’s been teasing you with for what feels like hours just so that you’ll appreciate it and enjoy it all the more.
G = Goofy (are they more serious in the moment? are they humorous? etc.)
he’s quite serious in the moment. he wants to make sure that you’re enjoying yourself and that he’s doing the absolute most to exceed any expectations each and every time.
H = Hair (how well groomed are they? does the carpet match the drapes? etc.)
he naturally doesn’t have much hair down there. he trims what he has and keeps it tidy since he feels it’s more intimate.
I = Intimacy (how are they during the moment? the romantic aspect)
most of the time, he’s extremely romantic during sex. he’s very into slow and sensual sex that allows you two to bond physically and emotionally. it’s important to him that he understands your wants and needs as his partner and vice versa, making the whole experience super romantic.
but that’s not all the time. sometimes he just wants to rip off your clothes and have his way with you and that’s ✨totally fine✨
J = Jack off (masturbation headcanon)
i feel like he’s a typical laptop on desk, tissues besides him type of guy. he doesn’t do it too often, but when he does he has to fully commit because there is absolutely no way he’s stopping for anything/anyone that isn’t you.
K = Kink (one or more of their kinks)
he’s not that kinky, he’s a vanilla man. i’ll just list some sexual things that he likes hehe
whispering- he likes when you whisper close to his ear and he likes doing it to you. the tingling down his neck is intoxicating, he can’t help but want to feel it again and again. what you say is important too. he likes receiving praise. saying things like “you make me so wet” or “you turn me on so much” makes him so happy, it’s a great way to drive him crazy.
ropes- not to an extreme level, just one rope to tie your hands together behind you or in front of you.
eye contact- he likes that his eyes intimidate you of course, but you pushing past that and maintaining eye contact makes him feel a rush to MAKE you feel intimidated. he wants you to feel like he’s in charge (even if he’s not) and if he can’t do that with his eyes, then it’s pretty much over for him, but he likes that fact that you stood up to him and it turns him tf on.
L = Location (favorite places to do the do)
he likes sex in bed or on the floor. anywhere that he or you can lie comfortably. he likes fucking you in hotel beds. although it’s not really that dirty, it is for you two.
M = Motivation (what turns them on, gets them going)
gentle strokes- he likes when you trace his jawline or collarbones with your fingers, especially when you have long nails. he almost always returns the favour. he likes gently dragging his finger up and down your thigh before and between rubbing your pussy.
directness- tell him you’re turned on. tell him why you’re turned on. tell him how he turned you on. tell him how you feel and why you think he should feel the same way to. by the end of your talk, he’s gurenteed to feel the same way.
N = No (something they wouldn’t do, turn offs)
angry sex/sex during an argument.
he wants to settle things properly first. sex isn’t a solution nor is it forgiveness. the only way he can truly be intimate with you is when you’re both happy and when you’re both on the same page. “angry” sex like that is meaningless to him, the argument mustn’t have been important if you can just forget about it so why can’t you just talk it through?
O = Oral (preference in giving or receiving, skill, etc.)
he’s naturally a giver and oral (sex in general) is no exception. he wants you to be able to allow yourself to receive instead of forcing it upon you if you’re not used to it. he introduces his tongue slowly and always asks if what he’s doing is okay. even if you are used to it, he’s always gonna build up to it. he likes when you take the lead even when he’s eating you out, he likes when you’re giving him directions or your hands are in his hair, controlling him, because then he knows that what he’s doing is right.
not too fussed about receiving head. of course he would never say no, but he’s not one to ask for one just to finish without pleasuring you. he’s eyes are closed during the whole thing and and he lets out small, quiet cusses which he knows turn you on. also says nice stuff to you (when he can get the words out) while you’re sucking his dick because 🥺 he is nice.
P = Pace (are they fast and rough? slow and sensual? etc.)
as i mentioned before, he’s slow and sensual. he keeps the experience extremely romantic and memorable. it leaves you wanting more and he knows.
Q = Quickie (their opinions on quickies, how often, etc.)
not his style. at all. he likes to draw out the details, take his time with you, ensure you've both been treated and pleasured sufficiently.
R = Risk (are they game to experiment? do they take risks? etc.)
he’d only experiment with things that you’d tried before or things you’ve researched. he doesn’t wanna try anything new to the pair of you especially early on because he doesn’t wanna hurt you or leave a bad impression or anything like that. he’d never spring anything on you that you hadn’t discusssed either.
S = Stamina (how many rounds can they go for? how long do they last?)
2-3 rounds, but it totally depends on you. how much you want, how much you turn him on after, how tired you are etc.
he usually lasts for around 20 mins but needs like a 10 second breather sometimes
T = Toys (do they own toys? do they use them? on a partner or themselves?)
i don’t see him owning any toys but i don’t think he’d be opposed to using them. if you wanted to use them, great fantastic he’d get straight to it. he would definitely like to try them for himself at least once too.
U = Unfair (how much they like to tease)
he doesn’t tease you much, because he’d rather just do it? but i guess if you’d consider extended foreplay to the point where you have to beg him to fuck you as teasing then he’s the master lol. oH and also doesn’t just kiss you during sex, he definitely teases with those.
V = Volume (how loud they are, what sounds they make, etc.)
tries to hold his moans and cusses back but fails lol. they’re quiet and soft but you can still hear them. he gets kind of shy about them after sex too and he doesn’t really like it when you bring it up.
W = Wild card (a random headcanon for the character)
“take it off” he orders, looking directly at your chest. you remove your tshirt on command and throw it to the ground. he walks towards you, backing you into the wall behind you. it was a harsh and sudden coldness on your back, but there was something even colder in front of you. his eyes glared at you, which subconsciously made you remove your bra.
“so fucking beautiful” he growled while taking one of your breasts in his hand. it wasn’t long before he started with his tongue. he circled your nipple with his tongue while he played with the other one in his hand. your head automatically fell back, luckily resting on the wall. he slowly began to flick your nipple with his tongue before gently kissing it and moving to the other one.
your hand found its way to his hair, grabbing it and pulling it a little. you occasionally let out small gasps, which almost always made him look up at you and smile.
after a few minutes, he stood up once again, head buried in your neck as he whispered what he wanted you to do for him next.
“please, make me cum. you've turned me on so much tonight.”
that’s when it all started making sense. you’d been bowling that night with friends. this involved a lot of bending over, a lot of casual skin touches when neither of you were bowling and a LOT of whispering closely in his ear since the music was so loud. you knew he liked it when you whispered, but you didn’t know even in that context that it would send shivers down your spine. you stored that info, maybe you’d use that against him one day after he’d been teasing you.
X = X-ray (let’s see what’s going on under those clothes)
i think average, with just a little under average thickness. i’m not sure if you can ever call a dick pretty but i feel with yoshi it would be justified, especially when it’s hard.
Y = Yearning (how high is their sex drive?)
i’m pretty sure it varies depending on your type of relationship. if you are a romantic partner, 3-4 times a week. if it’s just a fling, once maybe twice a week at most. he has a naturally high sex drive, but he’s less likely to take his time with someone he has no feelings for meaning he doesn’t really crave sex as often as he would with someone he’s romantically involved with.
Z = Zzz (how quickly they fall asleep afterwards)
as i mentioned above, yoshi wants to talk to you and connect with you even further after sex. he falls asleep when he’s ready to fall asleep, which is after he’s learnt something about you that makes his heart flutter, that he can tease you about later on.

Yo im super sorry to hear all that hazzle happening with your old account, but if you are not too busy can i ask id/w pr/owl chubby headcanons?
First: the hassle with my initial tumblr account being shadow banned- it sucked- but I can understand.  Way back when I first joined tumblr *adult* content was allowed, and I may have had my account marked as explicit.  SO, when the rules changed- I think my account was then marked.  Hey- rules are rules, I’m fine with that.  Just wish I had the ability to easily delete all pieces/change the settings easier to get it un-shadow banned.  It was just easier to create a new one and start over.  I do mind the new rules now- so if any tumblr mod sees this- I wasn’t evading a ban to keep it up or anything- I just wanted my art posts to be searchable and all
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now on to the better part.  Chubby Prowl.  (may not be completely cannon- rusty on some sections that happened in the comics.  While I am reading tfwiki- not going to go overboard with being exact)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
More often than not, I envision Prowl to busy/focused on his work to care about creature comforts like eating tasty food or to even really enjoy a meal. It’s more like he would eat just to remain functional.  The more time you spend refueling, or sleeping, or relaxing- the less time to get things done that need to get done!  And I do think Prowl is very dead-set on deadlines and completion of tasks (Maybe not as bad as Ultra Magnus- but pretty darn close)
Naturally, when Prowl’s mind was taken over by an insecticon and no one noticed the difference, Prowl was a bit down in the dumps- and who can blame him?  Slag, he did some rotten things under the mind-control of a ‘Con- and no one noticed!  Talk about feeling bad about yourself.
SO, did he eat out of depression?
No.
Hold your horses people.  Not everyone eats because they are sad.  Prowl was not really given the chance since the whole Prow-astator spiel picked up.  Yeah, so this poor bloke not only suffered mind control under Bombshell, but then was forced to combine with the Constructicons.  You can imagine how happy Prowl was with that.
If not- he wasn’t happy.  There, spelled it out.  Lol.
Once that spiel was taken care of, and Prowl was free from the gestalt bond, he was able to perform his life-long goal of…. Paperwork… or whatever it was that he felt so important to overfocus on.
Or so he thought.
Turns out, one thing not many people know about the Constructicons is that they are cling-ons.  No, not the Star Trek characters… Cling-ons is a term I use for people that literally/figuratively cling on to something or someone.  Get it?  Cling -ons?  Get it?  So, the Constructicons didn’t care if the gestalt bond was broken- their minds were still infatuated with Prowl.
And they doted upon him any chance they got.  At first, they offered to help with the paperwork, tidying up his quarters and such (yes pervs, they offered *other* services as well, but I see Prowl as kind of a prude, so wondering hands were slapped away) Naturally, Prowl was like ‘alright free help!’ But then got annoyed with some aspects.
Like the construction bot’s over concern when he worked one minute overtime. Or didn’t recharge long enough.  Or go on vacations.  Or polish his frame to a blinding shine.  Or fully stretch himself out.  Or watch the end of movies.  Or take long deep breathes.  Or cough just right-OK OK- I’ll get to the good stuff.  Or treat himself to nice, nutritious, and delicious home cooked meals.
Turns out, another fact overlooked about the brutish Constructicons was their joy of cooking.  So, during one of their tantrums of Prowl eating disgusting nuked meals that tasted like rubber and seat cushions, they decided to plan a good meal for Prowl.  AND FORCE HIM TO ENJOY IT.  The second part was the harder part.
They only managed to pull it off by excessive whining and pleading (one even got on the floor and convulsed in a full blown toddler tantrum- it was Bonecrusher) and promised to be quiet after Prowl ate their food.
With a scowl on his face, Prowl sat down at the table (a chair pushed in by Hook, while Scavenger placed a cloth napkin on his lap and another got to uncover the dish)  (( Yes, they fought over who would get to do what))  Mixmaster attempted to feed him, but naturally Prowl hollered and made that Constructicon cry.
But all it took was that one bite.  That one bite was so flavorful, so tasty that Prowl instantly fell head over heels over their cooking.  And no, it wasn’t poisoned or anything like that.  There was no brainwashing this time.  Prowl eagerly consumed the meal and even smiled upon discovering there was dessert- of which he happily ate.  Then complained that he ate too much.
He wasn’t fat yet.
So, now that the green men knew Prowl loved their cooking- they made it their goal to prepare all his meals for him.  Breakfasts consisting of sweet baked energon goodies were always laid out for him on the table when the black and white Autobot appeared from his sleeping quarters.
Lunches were packed for him.  They had an assortment of finger foods like freshly baked energon bread slathered in rich cyber-jellies, zirconium crunches, and assortment of sweet min-cakes, doughnuts (LOL), and fresh energon fruit just picked up from the Cybertronian version of a farmers market.  Also included were an assortment of energon drinks- some flavored on the citrusy side, some on the spicey side.  One time there was even an intoxicating drink in there, but Prowl scolded them for doing so, making another ‘Con cry (this time it was Hook).  But there was always a wide assortment for their chosen one to pick at all day.
Once Prowl retreated home, a full course meal would be waiting for him.  And if he was really late, the Constructicons would be angry because their meal cooled off.  But he would be beckoned to the table- and Prowl would resist less and less each time and seated in front of an appetizer.  The ‘Con who made it would describe what it was and what was in it.  Often the appetizers would consist of things like fried energon rings, little energon rolls filled with peat moss and cyberfish… just a taste of something, well, tasty.
Second dish would be some kind of soup.  Prowls favorite was a wonton soup made with fresh lithium noodles in a broth seasoned with calcium, zinc, and barium.  Naturally, he got that soup quite often, but it was changed up.  Sometimes it was more of a peat barely flavored with specks of agate, or more of a stew.  Each tasted amazing!
Then came the main course.  Most times all the Constructicons would be talking over each other to try to explain the tastes, aromas, textures, and ingredients, but Prowl just tuned them out and would start eating.  And the dishes never disappointed.  The food tasted amazing- like there was a party in his mouth.
Last but not least: dessert.  By this time, the “cons were usually jittery with excitement.  Fresh out of the oven titanium pies was definitely a hit with Prowl, so was the warm, moist and gooey oil cakes.  And the Constructicons squealed with joy whenever Prowl would hum at how delicious the treats were.
And if Prowl ever left any food behind, they would gripe and moan.  But as time went on, Prowl left less and less behind.  He would gripe of belly aches more and more- and eventually he would allow one of the ‘Con’s to rub his stuffed belly as it grumbled and churned.  While Prowl would never admit this out loud, the belly messages felt good.  Soothing.  Relaxing.  Except for when hands would try to wonder too far down south- they’d still get slapped away.
And Prowl’s body soon grew.  First was the starter belly, but that soon progressed into more of a pouch that became both ample and soft.  His love handles were a favorite to be rubbed by Hook, where as Bonecrusher loved the part of the belly that sagged over his hips- claimed it was the most squishiest.  Scavenger preferred the top crest of the belly- saying nothing beats a round roll right after one’s chest plating.  Mixmaster and Longhaul didn’t really care as long as they got to molest- I mean, message the belly.
Chub accumulated over more of Prowl’s once lean body.  His thighs plumped up nicely and rubbed together as he walked/waddled and, in Mixmaster’s words- his aft grew quite thic.  Turns out, Mixmaster was a butt man, and loved to squeeze at the chub there.  And slap it to watch it jiggle.
As time went by, Prowl grew lax in his prudeness, and allowed the Constructicons to carry him back to his berth to pass out in his food comas- which happened on a more regular basis.  And instead of just one lucky ‘Con getting to rub him- it was all five.  Yes, they fought over who got to rub his belly.  But they would give their Prowl a full body message as the ‘Bot would drift off into sleep.  Chubby thighs would be pawed at, arm flab tickled, rolls would be prodded, all while sweet little nothings were cooed.  The night usually ended with Prowl being lulled to sleep by the sound of five engines purring in such a soothing, rhythmical tune.
The next day?  It would all be repeated.
And soon, Prowl even let the Constructicon’s aid him with bathing, though it could only ever be one due to his size.
Yes, they fought over who got to bathe their beloved Prowl’s rounder, softer, and squishier body.

what do you think sansa's endgame is? and i'm not talking ships. like what do you think she'll be doing by the time the books end.
Anon, you accidentally made me write an essay.
So, to try and guess where Sansa could be at the end of the story, we have to look at where she’s heading currently.
She’s currently in the Vale, stuck under the control of Littlefinger. I think Sansa’s arc in TWOW will revolve around breaking free of his manipulation. There’s a line in Bran’s first ASOS chapter that seems to foreshadow this:
Sometimes he could sense them, though, as if they were still with him, only hidden from his sight by a boulder or a stand of trees. He could not smell them, nor hear their howls by night, yet he felt their presence at his back . . . all but the sister they had lost. His tail drooped when he remembered her. Four now, not five. Four and one more, the white who has no voice.
These woods belonged to them, the snowy slopes and stony hills, the great green pines and the golden leaf oaks, the rushing streams and blue lakes fringed with fingers of white frost. But his sister had left the wilds, to walk in the halls of man-rock where other hunters ruled, and once within those halls it was hard to find the path back out. The wolf prince remembered.
—Bran I, A Storm of Swords
It’s hard to find the path back out, but not impossible. I do believe Sansa will return to “the wilds” that belong to her and her siblings.
George was asked once if Sansa still has skinchanging powers even though Lady is gone, and he said she does. We’ll probably see that aspect of her character start to make an appearance in Winds, especially since the presence of magic ramps up with each book. I think it would make sense if she bonded with a bird (such as a falcon or a hawk), seeing as she has quite a lot of bird imagery (particularly caged bird imagery) in her story. Sansa “flying free”, both literally and figuratively, seems like a logical step for her arc.
I do wonder how her connection with the “pack” will be handled. All of the Stark kids except for Sansa have the telepathic bond through their wolves, so I wonder what GRRM will do with Sansa there. It’s heartbreaking, that she doesn’t have that mental connection that the others do. I don’t know if that could somehow be reformed without Lady? There are a lot of unanswered questions about the Stark kids skinchanging powers (and the telepathic bond). Why did their powers only show up when the wolves did? How far do their powers go? How powerful could they become once they’re properly trained? How does the telepathic bond work? Is that a thing that other skinchangers can do? Is it there because of the wolves or is it through the kids themselves? Is it forever broken with Sansa because Lady is gone, or could Sansa reform that connection through another wolf that joins the Stark warg pack? Would it make sense narratively and thematically for GRRM to give Sansa another wolf?
Anyway, no idea what he’ll do with that. (Some sort of scene where Sansa is like “I don’t have a wolf anymore”, and then all the other Starklings crowd around her for a giant group hug and say “that’s okay, you’re still a part of the pack no matter what” is something I could see happening. It’s not like the other kids would treat her any less for not having a direwolf, she’s still their sister.)
A common speculation I see for Sansa’s endgame is that she could become the new head of House Arryn. And, well, the aesthetic of Sansa being Lady of the Eyrie/Lord Protector of the Vale/Warden of the East is definitely cool. The Queen of Birds up in a mountain palace with her flock all around her like a winged army? That’s some gorgeous imagery.
But...
I don’t think Sansa would ever willingly choose to stay in the Vale if she had the option to go home to Winterfell:
She awoke all at once, every nerve atingle. For a moment she did not remember where she was. She had dreamt that she was little, still sharing a bedchamber with her sister Arya. But it was her maid she heard tossing in sleep, not her sister, and this was not Winterfell, but the Eyrie. And I am Alayne Stone, a bastard girl. The room was cold and black, though she was warm beneath the blankets. Dawn had not yet come. Sometimes she dreamed of Ser Ilyn Payne and woke with her heart thumping, but this dream had not been like that. Home. It was a dream of home.
The Eyrie was no home.
—Sansa VII, A Storm of Swords
One of the largest themes in the stories of the younger POV characters (Theon, Jon, Dany, Sansa, Arya, Bran, Rickon (even though he’s not a POV character)) is that of home. Just go on A Search of Ice and Fire and search for the word “home” in each of those characters’ chapters. I think Sansa will end up at her home, with her pack. We know she must return at Winterfell at some point, as she has the final part of this prophecy to fulfill:
"I dreamt a wolf howling in the rain, but no one heard his grief," the dwarf woman was saying. "I dreamt such a clangor I thought my head might burst, drums and horns and pipes and screams, but the saddest sound was the little bells. I dreamt of a maid at a feast with purple serpents in her hair, venom dripping from their fangs. And later I dreamt that maid again, slaying a savage giant in a castle built of snow."
—Arya VIII, A Storm of Swords
The wolf howling in the rain is Grey Wind (or Shaggydog/Rickon, since it’s raining on Skagos when Jon dreams of his “black brother”), the clangor is the Red Wedding and the bells are the ones on Jinglebell’s hat when Catelyn sawed at his throat, and the maid at the feast is Sansa. And Sansa will “slay a savage giant in a castle built of snow.” That castle is obviously Winterfell, although the fandom has yet to concretely agree on who the “savage giant” is.
Evidently, Sansa will return to Winterfell, and she probably has to get there before winter really starts setting in, or else the journey would be nearly impossible in the deadly weather. So, probably at some point in the next book.
Now, I believe that there’s a big moment coming for Sansa in TWOW: the moment where she unrepresses/uncovers her memories. Sansa knows a lot of important things. She knows the truth about Jon Arryn, she knows that her hair net was used to poison Joffrey, she knows that Littlefinger was involved in the disappearance of Jeyne Poole. Sansa’s memory swapping/adjusting/erasing/repressing (whatever you wanna call it) is important to her character. It’s her brain’s way of coping with the trauma she’s been through.
I think that one of these memories coming to the forefront is going to trigger something big: Littlefinger’s downfall. I speculate that what will most likely come out in the open first is what happened to Jeyne Poole. Sansa finding out what Baelish did to her closest childhood friend could definitely be what turns her against him.
Warning, I’m going to mention the sh*w here for a second. George has said that he wrote Sansa and Jeyne’s interactions into season 1, and that he tried to build Jeyne as a character, but her scenes were cut by the showrunners. Clearly, George cares about her, her friendship with Sansa, and her value in the story, he was very upset about the deletion of her character and of Sansa’s friendship with her.* I believe the reveal of what happened to Jeyne will be a major part of Sansa’s story in Winds. She’s repressed her memories of Jeyne and her disappearance because it is, understandably, too much for her mind to handle thinking about.
The reveal of this memory could be a catalyst to the other memories coming forward, especially since they involve Littlefinger. I think Sansa will be a key part in wrapping up the political aspect of the story, she can reveal the truth of why the Stark-Lannister conflict began all the way back in book 1. She can expose Littlefinger’s lies and schemes. That’s where I think her narrative is heading, at least in TWOW.
I’m not sure what Sansa’s story arc will be in ADOS (I’m not sure what anyone’s story will be in ADOS, but Sansa’s is a bit more of a blank page than others). If the Littlefinger conflict gets wrapped up in TWOW, I don’t know where her story will go from there. Supposedly, she could be in Winterfell at that point. What will happen then… well, then it’s Long Night time. Sansa is not one of the “key five players” (Tyrion, Dany, Arya, Bran, and Jon), but I still think she’ll have an important role in the book. I think Sansa and Arya’s relationship is something that will be focused on a lot through both of their chapters in the final novel. We’re going to see Ned’s quote, “you need her, as she needs you”, really matter.
No matter where her arc goes over the next two books, though, I do think she’ll end up at Winterfell. And like I said, I don’t think Sansa would choose to leave her home again after returning. I think that her story will end with her staying at Winterfell with the other kids. The Stark children would never willingly leave each other after reuniting. Jon literally describes the separation from his siblings as “a deep ache of emptiness, a sense of incompleteness.” And, of course, the iconic line Ned delivers to Arya: “The lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.” I don’t see any of their endings being them as “lone wolves” again.
So, to answer your question, I think the endgame for Sansa will be her back in Winterfell with her family, where she belongs, where she is strongest. I do suspect, however, that there will be some sort of epilogue at the end of ADOS, possibly a “10 years later” or somewhere along those lines. Where she’ll be then, I have no idea. She’ll probably be involved with something politically by then, like ruling or advising.
*Based on what George himself has said about the show’s post-season 4 portrayal of Sansa, I don’t think her story will be similar in any way to the show’s very different version of her character (same goes for everyone). George is typically very mild when talking about the show, saying stuff like “they chose to go down a different path with the story”, but this is one of the only times he flat out criticized the show for how wrong it is. He was very upset the show cut out her storyline. He has also said that “every character has a different end” in the books. So take from that what you will.

Digimon Data Squad Dub Comparison Episode 1 - There Are Monsters Among Us!
This is a companion to my commentary on the original Japanese Digimon Savers! Reading my commentary on the original version of this episode (which you can find here) is recommended before reading this dub comparison.
Original name ~ Dubbed name
Masaru Daimon ~ Marcus Damon
Yoshino Fujieda ~ Yoshino “Yoshi” Fujieda
Captain Rentarou Satsuma ~ Commander Richard Sampson
[Since several characters share the same name between the original and the dub, quotes from the dub will always be in italics, while quotes from the original will not, in order to distinguish them.]
First off, can we talk about the characters’ dub names? The dub doesn’t actively draw attention to its setting much (but then again neither does the original, really), but it also does not change the fact that this is taking place in Japan and these characters are actually Japanese, despite that we’re hearing them speak English. Some of them keep their Japanese names, too, even if maybe they have slight shortenings of them to be easier for a Western audience to remember. But then some characters’ names are randomly changed to completely English ones, even though these characters are apparently still meant to be Japanese and living in Japan. It’s just strange – if they’re okay with keeping some of the Japanese names, why not keep all of them?
(Honestly, despite my complaints, I am kind of a little glad that they changed Masaru’s name in the dub, because Marcus comes across somewhat of a different character to Masaru for reasons I will be discussing at length. In that sense, it’s convenient to have different names to differentiate them by.)
Kudamon:  “He’s a renegade to begin with. We have no choice but to dispose of him.”
~~~~~
Kudamon: “The target is a renegade. We must catch him before he gets out.”
This is actually more reasonable than what Kudamon says here in the original.
Satsuma:  “The only ones who can keep Digimon under control… are Digimon!”
~~~~~
Sampson: “Only a high-level DATS agent can capture a Digimon.”
The original version of this line was already awkwardly expositiony, sure, but this one just doesn’t make as much sense. The point is not that Yoshi is a high level DATS agent, but that she has a Digimon partner.
The dub completely replaces the original’s soundtrack. I did a shoutout to the BGM here in the original, and I also want to do a BGM shoutout here in the dub! This piece here is very different sounding from Provocation Infinity but still gives a similar sort of actiony gung-ho feel appropriate for Marcus and Agumon being fighty dorks, and I like it. It’s used often enough in moments like this such that it’s the only dub theme aside from the evolution theme that I’ve become able to pick out and recognise the melody of, even though this is only my second time watching the dub. Though I don’t know what the dub soundtrack’s titles are (actually, after having a look, it seems like the dub OST was never released, so nobody does), I like to think that this one is probably Marcus’s theme based on the moments its used in, so I’m going to be calling it Probably Marcus’s Theme.
Marcus: “This is my training ground!”
This park is apparently specifically his “training ground”, even though it’s just an ordinary park that anyone can visit. Um, okay? (More on this at the end of this episode.)
Masaru:  “I’m the number one street fighter in Japan, Daimon Masaru-sama!”
~~~~~
Marcus: “One day, I’m gonna be a champion ultimate fighter!”
They’ve changed “street fighter” to “ultimate fighter”, which, okay, makes him come across a bit less like a delinquent, fair enough. But a noteworthy difference is that he’s only trying to be the best ultimate fighter. Masaru, on the other hand, feels like he already is Japan’s number one street fighter. This change still sounds fine and in-character enough on the surface, but it’s a meaningful distinction that will become quite relevant further in as we get more into Masaru’s character, so keep this in mind.
Marcus: “Fans all over will chant my name! They’ll say, ‘Marcus Damon is the best!’”
I get that what the dubbers are going for here is something equivalent in spirit to Masaru using -sama on himself. But there’s other, simpler ways to do that – just have him call himself “the great Marcus Damon”, or something like that.
As it is, what they’ve done here is make it seem like, apparently, Marcus has fans, or at least he wants to have fans. Which is not even remotely the point of his fighting thing in the original, nor will it be in the dub, either. He’s not doing this for recognition from others; this is something he’s doing entirely for himself.
Yoshi: “Raptor-1 can talk…?”
This was not a thing implied in the original – that apparently, Yoshi (and presumably therefore everyone else at DATS) hadn’t even heard Agumon talk until now. I guess they’re going for giving more of an explanation as to why DATS treated him like a monster, but I find it difficult to buy that Agumon really wouldn’t have said at least some stuff while trapped at DATS HQ. (“I’m hungry,” if nothing else, right?)
Lalamon: “Yoshi, he’ll destroy the human!”
Oh, boy. This is one of those English dubs that refuses to directly acknowledge the concept of death because apparently the poor kiddies can’t handle that or something. I will attempt to not rag on it every time it does so – only because that’d get really boringly repetitive – but I will be talking about it a lot in future episodes when death becomes quite a story-important thing that is happening.
For now, let’s just point out that it sounds really silly to talk like a human can be “destroyed”. There’s plenty of other ways to get across that Agumon is dangerous without directly referencing death that would sound more natural.
Marcus: “Then I’ll knock you out like I did these guys!”
Masaru did not mention the fact that he was responsible for beating up all the dudes this early on. I guess here in the dub, Yoshi just isn’t paying proper attention, because she’s going to continue to assume it was Agumon who hurt all the students.
Kudamon:  “He’s too dangerous.”
~~~~~
Kudamon:  “We cannot let this escalate.”
I am sad that the dub lost the fun “who’s too dangerous?” double meaning of Kudamon’s original line.
Yoshino:  “Hey, you! Get away from him! You’ll only lose if you fight him!”
Masaru:  “Huh? This isn’t about win or lose! This is about fighting man-to-man!”
~~~~~
Yoshi: “You can’t fight that creature! He’s too dangerous!”
Marcus: “Huh? Look, toots, I’m the dangerous fighter here! And I don’t need any babysitter to hold my hand!”
We really, really did not need Marcus being vaguely misogynistic by calling Yoshi “toots”, or by implying that she’s nothing but a babysitter. We really didn’t.
This also replaces Masaru’s original line that has that fun aspect of him not even caring about winning and just wanting to have a good challenging fight with a worthy opponent, so we lose that, too.
(Though, ignoring the misogyny, I do enjoy Marcus responding to “he’s too dangerous!” with “hey, I’m dangerous”.)
Agumon:  “Yeah! It’s man-to-man!”
~~~~~
Agumon: “That’s right! This is between him and me!”
Agumon then also isn’t able to agree about this being man-to-man, and this just becomes a less interestingly nuanced “stay out of our fight”, rather than really about the kind of fight they want to have.
Masaru:  “Got it? Now stay out of this!”
~~~~~
Marcus: “This is a fight between men, so stay out of it!”
Having removed Masaru’s reference to men a few lines earlier, the dub does something which is going to be extremely rare by its standards and actually adds in a reference to men here. …Unfortunately, because they’d also added in Marcus’s random misogynistic lines earlier, this comes across much more like it’s about gender, and he’s just essentially saying “we don’t want any girls in our fight”. Which, no. Masaru talking about manliness is never actually that much about gender at all, despite the word he uses.
Masaru:  “I see you’re pretty brave.”
~~~~~
Marcus:  “I dunno what you are, but you’re goin’ down!”
We lose the sense of Masaru having respect for Agumon challenging him in place of some basic I’m-better-than-you trash talk. And this also adds in Marcus calling Agumon a what, rather than a who, indicating that apparently Marcus is paying some attention to Agumon’s species and is seeing him, at least a little, as not quite worthy of the same respect as a human.
After their big cross-counter…
Agumon:  “I wasn’t ready. But you won’t get me this time!”
~~~~~
Agumon: “Hey! I wasn’t ready! I was waitin’ for you to say, ‘One, two, three, go!’”
The dubbers completely missed the point of the original, “I wasn’t ready.” Original-Agumon’s line comes across as “I wasn’t expecting you to be that strong, but now I’ve got the measure of you”, like he’s gained more respect for Masaru’s strength. Meanwhile dub-Agumon is just whining and acting like Marcus totally cheated rather than acknowledging his unexpected strength.
Agumon kicking Marcus in the crotch is cut, replaced with a rather cheesy-looking comic book POW sort of effect across the whole screen.
There’s a cute acoustic guitar BGM here for their bonding moment that I like, especially after recognising its melody and realising that this is a variation on Probably Marcus’s Theme! That seems very appropriate.
Agumon: “You’re… pretty good… for a human.”
Geez, what a backhanded compliment. Apparently dub-Agumon still sees Marcus as below him simply because he’s human, rather than fully acknowledging his strength regardless of species.
Agumon: “Let’s call it a draw.”
This line fills a silence, stating something that was already perfectly well implied in the first place by the fact that they’re no longer fighting and yet there’s no clear winner. It shouldn’t need to be said. In fact, it makes it seem a lot more like this fight really was just about winning or losing to both of them, when in the original that was never the point.
Rather than “Aniki”, which, okay, works fine in subs but can’t really be kept in a proper official English dub, Agumon calls Marcus “Boss”. I guess this is acceptable, but I feel like it would have been better for them to lean into the “big brother” meaning of aniki, rather than the “boss” one, for reasons I will be grumbling about a lot.
Masaru:  “Aniki?”
Agumon:  “Yeah. You’re the first person to acknowledge me as a full-fledged individual, Aniki.”
~~~~~
Marcus: “Boss?”
Agumon: “Yeah. Y’see, you’re the only guy who’s ever matched me blow-for-blow in a fight before.”
So, in this version, Agumon gaining respect for Marcus has absolutely nothing to do with Marcus treating him like a person. It’s just because of his strength, nothing else. Way to lose that really fun little bit of nuance and character depth on both sides.
(Also, what does Agumon even mean, “before”? It’s not like he’d have been able to have proper fights that weren’t just defending himself while trying to escape until now.)
Agumon:  “That’s why, from now on, I’ll be your follower!”
~~~~~
Agumon: “That makes you the boss. From now on, you give the orders and I’ll faithfully follow!”
Matching Agumon in a fight shouldn’t really suddenly make Marcus the boss who gets to order him around, should it? Plus, here’s Agumon explicitly saying Marcus can give him orders, which was not at all part of the arrangement originally. This whole thing has such a different tone to “you treated me like a person when nobody else did, so now I look up to you and will be loyal to you.”
Marcus:  “I never thought one day that I’d have an employee that’s as funny-lookin’ as you are.”
Oh, boy. Meanwhile, instead of “follower”, we have… employee. That is even more completely missing the point of the aniki-and-follower relationship of the original. If they didn’t like the gang connotations of “boss”, maybe they should have gone for “big bro” instead, perhaps? But no, they just doubled down on the “boss” in a totally different and inappropriate direction. Marcus has apparently just started up a small business.
The heartwarming BGM gets a record scratch as Yoshi reminds them she’s still there. I admit, it made me chuckle.
Yoshi: “So, are you gonna come quietly, or do I have to use force?”
Marcus: “Who’s she talkin’ to, you or me?”
I do enjoy this – a little implication that Marcus has some experience with being treated in a similar way, perhaps by the regular police.
Masaru:  “It’s the aniki’s job to look after his follower. I’m not handing him over to you!”
~~~~~
Marcus: “I’ve never had an employee before, and I’m not turning my only one over to you!”
Instead of Masaru doing this out of feeling like it’s an aniki’s responsibility, Marcus is making it about himself. He doesn’t want to lose his new and only employee. Like Agumon’s just a possession of his now. Nothing about how this is something that should be expected of him as a boss.
Later, at the tower, as Agumon asks Marcus to help him evade DATS:
Marcus: “What am I getting myself into this time?”
I enjoy this too. More implications that Marcus is used to getting himself into all sorts of Trouble.
Agumon: “I’m starved!”
Marcus: “Well, suck it up and act like a real man!”
Again with the dub adding in references to manliness that weren’t there originally, as if Marcus actually has a concept of manliness that will continue to be a running theme. Haha, I wish. Get ready for me complaining about the exact opposite of this in basically every other dub episode.
Agumon: “I’m a growing boy!”
How does Agumon even know this phrase? This is an entirely human concept. Dub Agumon will be doing a lot of this, awkwardly invoking human ideas that he shouldn’t have any conception of.
Yoshi: “Yum. I love chocolate pudding – it reminds me of being a little kid again!”
Yoshino’s coffee jelly gets localised into chocolate pudding, because I guess coffee jelly is more of a Japanese thing that Westerners might be unfamiliar with? I enjoy the added detail that it reminds her of being a kid and that’s why she likes it.
Masaru:  “I don’t know anyone by that name!”
~~~~~
Marcus:  “I have no idea who this ‘Raptor-1’ is!”
Marcus’s line loses the technically-not-lying and respecting-Agumon’s-identity of the original line. He does know who this “Raptor-1” that Yoshi’s talking about is, even if that isn’t actually his name.
Masaru:  “How’d you know my name?”
Yoshino:  “You yelled it out earlier for everyone to hear.”
~~~~~
Marcus: “How do you know my name, anyway?”
Yoshi:  “I know everything about you.”
No pointing out that he yelled it out earlier like a huge dork. Instead, she just really leans into the DATS-are-creepily-authoritative vibe that she already had a little of in the original.
Yoshi: “Born April 2nd in Tokyo, blood type B, Ootori middle school eighth grade.”
Him being born in Tokyo was not a detail mentioned in the original. And also probably not true in the original, since the series is set in Yokohama and there’s no indication that his family moved here. The dub is presumably still set in Yokohama even though it’s never mentioned, just because the scenery is that of Yokohama, so I guess they’ve just established some dub-only canon that the Damon family moved home at some point. This will actually come up briefly later. I am shocked that I’m saying this.
At least, props to the dub for mentioning Tokyo and making it pretty overt that, yes, this is set in Japan. (You know, with this Japanese guy called Marcus.)
Yoshi also does not explicitly specify Marcus’s age, only that he’s in eighth grade. Which (I’m pretty sure, though I’m unfamiliar with American school grades and may be wrong) would make him fourteen anyway, at least assuming he hasn’t been held back at any point. Keep this in mind, because this will also come up later.
Yoshi: “…and you now live with your mother Sarah and your little sister Kristy, who looks up to you even though you generally act like a jerk.”
First of all, how the hell does DATS have so much information that they even know how his sister feels about him?
Second of all, more importantly, way to just tell us that, hey, did you know, Marcus is A Jerk, hey, guys, you’re supposed to think he’s a jerk, because… he fights things, I guess?
The reality? Masaru is not a jerk. Not even slightly. He’s reckless and hot-headed and will fight anything that poses a challenge, but that is not even remotely the same thing as being a jerk to people.
But apparently the dub doesn’t understand this, and they seem to think that being a jerk is somehow meant to be one of his most noticeable character traits. And I guess they’re trying to present the idea that he’s going to slowly grow into being a nicer person through the power of Digimon and friendship? Which is not at all any kind of arc that Masaru is going to have, because he is not actually a jerk in the first place.
If it was just this one line that seemed to think this, I wouldn’t be that annoyed. But one of the biggest things I’m going to be complaining about with the dub is the fact that they actually do change Marcus’s character significantly to make him noticeably more of a jerk than Masaru ever was. We’ve already seen a little bit of this sort of thing going on so far in this episode, with how they’ve removed focus from the bits with Masaru treating Agumon like a person and instead made it all about fighting, and specifically winning those fights. But, oh boy, there’s going to be a lot more, to an extent that it has to be deliberate.
And aside from me just finding this very frustrating as someone who deeply loves Masaru’s character to see him distorted like this, I also can’t help but boggle at why they would ever want to do this at all. Why would you deliberately adapt a character – the main character – to be less likeable than in the original version of the work? How does it not occur to you that this is only going to make your new audience enjoy the work less? I do not get it.
Lines like this one here are even worse, because they blatantly violate “show don’t tell”. Along with making Marcus act like a jerk and showing us that, the dub’s narrative is also telling us that he’s a jerk and insisting we should think that about him instead of letting us make up our own minds. It’s so lazy and heavy-handed. There will be more like this and I do not like it one bit.
Yoshi: “I’m with the Digimon Data Squad.”
I guess the Data Squad really is its full name in the dub. Even though the acronym is still DATS. Don’t ask me how that’s meant to work.
Marcus: “That’s a great story, dollface, but what’s it gotta do with me?”
Can we not with the Marcus being casually misogynistic? Can we not? (Thankfully, this isn’t going to be a recurring thing. Other ways in which Marcus is being made less likeable will be, but at least not this.)
Marcus does not say anything about assuming Agumon was just a frog. Since Masaru having thought that is going to be relevant again later in the series, this is a loss of not just a moment of amusing dorkiness but something actually meaningful.
(One thing that is very clear about the dub is that, with a few exceptions, they do not appear to have watched ahead to see the whole series first and are just dubbing episode-by-episode. For a series like this with quite a strong overarching plot and lots of little things like this that get callbacks, that means that a lot of this overarching sense of cohesiveness will be lost, simply by accident, because they didn’t realise there was something important there worth keeping around. This is another thing I will be talking about a lot.)
Yoshino:  “As long as you keep running from DATS, Raptor-1 will only starve to death.”
~~~~~
Yoshi:  “If you don’t return Raptor-1 to us, he’ll starve to death!”
This is a little different. Yoshino was only trying to get Masaru to come to DATS, supposedly to pick up some Digimon food. Yoshi, meanwhile, wants Marcus to bring Agumon to DATS. Which on the one hand is a more helpful strategy for what she’s trying to achieve. But on the other hand, he doesn’t bring Agumon, because obviously the dub can’t change the episode that much, so instead we’re just left with that awkwardly not being what happens despite it being brought up.
Yoshino:  “You…”
~~~~~
Yoshi: “Thank you.”
The hint that Yoshino is gaining a new respect for Masaru from his desire to help Agumon gets lost here, in favour of simply a thanks-for-finally-co-operating. Might partly be just lip-flap’s fault – the Japanese “you” is two syllables – but still, Yoshi’s tone of voice could at least have done some of the work to imply the same as the original, and it doesn’t really.
Kudamon:  “This is the boy that put Raptor-1 under control? He doesn’t appear to have any special power, at any rate.”
~~~~~
Kudamon: “Interesting that this is the boy who fought Raptor-1, because nothing about him indicates that he’s able to fight at that level.”
We lose any implication that Satsuma might have been telling Kudamon things about Masaru offscreen, and instead here’s dub-Kudamon simply refusing to believe the evidence of his own eyes. You literally watched him fight Agumon on your screen. He very evidently can fight at that level.
Kamemon: “Enjoy.”
Marcus: “I’m not thirsty.”
Kamemon: “Suit yourself.”
Kamemon actually says words in the dub as he brings Marcus tea! This was very bizarre to me when I’m used to original-Kamemon, who almost never speaks at all.
Masaru:  “Just hand over what I came for.”
~~~~~
Marcus: “Just say what ya have to say and stop wasting my time!”
Apparently the dub has forgotten that Marcus only came here to pick up Digimon food for Agumon, and suddenly he expects to be receiving a speech here when he shouldn’t.
Masaru:  “Renegades?”
Kudamon:  “Yes. Raptor-1 has already entered the human world and injured humans. He cannot be allowed to go free.”
~~~~~
Marcus: “Why are you calling him a renegade?”
Kudamon: “Because Raptor-1 has already entered the human world and made contact with human beings, so he can no longer be allowed to go free.”
I would complain that it’s a bit much that Agumon’s getting in so much trouble simply for meeting humans in the dub, and not specifically injuring them like they were assuming in the original. But, as it turns out, the original is also going to call Digimon simply meeting humans a “crime” in the next episode, possibly as part of its early weirdness. So, eh, this isn’t really the dub being any sillier than the original here.
Satsuma:  “Daimon Masaru, you should work with us to create a bright future for both humans and Digimon!”
~~~~~
Sampson: “Please co-operate. The future relationship between humans and Digimon depends on you returning Raptor-1 to us.”
Also, apparently Sampson isn’t actually trying to recruit Masaru to join DATS with this speech. I can understand the logic behind changing that, since Satsuma was going about that whole thing weirdly vaguely.
That said, saying that the entire relationship between the two species hinges on this one Digimon being returned doesn’t make any sense. So I get the feeling that the implication of what Satsuma really wanted in the original line just went completely over the dubbers’ heads, and they simply thought they were translating his intent directly and made it sound rather silly as a result.
Masaru:  “What the hell is this? Stop pestering without even listening to what I have to say first!”
~~~~~
Marcus:  “Why not? Because I don’t owe you people a single thing!”
We lose the fun subtle Masaru-y nuance of him caring about being given a chance to express how he feels here. Though I suppose it’s also relevant and illustrative that Marcus is implying he would help them if he felt like he owed them, showing a sense of responsibility there.
Masaru:  “…but have you even considered why he suddenly showed up in this world? He admired this place! He admired this wide world, filled with things moving around that he’d never seen before.”
~~~~~
Marcus: “Have you thought about why he came to the human world in the first place? What if he didn’t have a choice? Maybe things were bad for him back in the Digital World!”
This would be Marcus being sweet and thinking about how Agumon feels… if it wasn’t for the fact that Agumon told him he doesn’t know about anything except the institution, and therefore clearly didn’t deliberately try and run away from something bad in the Digital World. Pay attention to your foll – uh, employee, Marcus. Masaru’s line there had somewhat forgotten or misinterpreted what Agumon had told him, but Marcus’s is doing so to a much greater extent.
Masaru:  “But if he starts rampaging, then I’ll be responsible.”
~~~~~
Marcus: “And if he gets into any sort of trouble, I’ll claim full responsibility for his actions.”
This sounds like a perfectly reasonable translation, but the dub version of the sentence does not work nearly as well to foreshadow the thing that the original line is foreshadowing and this makes me sad.
Marcus: “But only if you give me some food for him!”
…This is immediately following the previous line. So I guess, since they never give him any food, Marcus doesn’t end up obligated to take any responsibility for Agumon getting into trouble. (Even though that’s still what he is going to do when they think Agumon’s attacking the hamburger shop. But this makes him come across like someone who’s less willing to do so no matter what and has less of a strong sense of responsibility.)
Kudamon:  “It looks like you’ll have to take responsibility sooner than you thought.”
~~~~~
Kudamon:  “Do you now see how hiding him has created a security breach for all of us?”
This change makes a fair amount of sense, since original-Kudamon was being unreasonable by insisting Masaru should take responsibility for Agumon’s hunger when that was really Yoshino’s fault. And it also fits with the fact that Marcus never actually promised to take responsibility since he wasn’t given any food.
Yoshino:  “So this is where you were hiding him. Since he’s nowhere to be seen, it must be him who attacked the hamburger shop.”
~~~~~
Yoshi:  “So this is where you were hiding Raptor-1. A lot of good it did you, since we confirmed it was definitely him who attacked the hamburger stand.”
No, you didn’t! How did you confirm a thing that isn’t true? If this is Yoshi lying, that’s just a dick move; she doesn’t even have anything to gain from it. It feels more like this was the dubbers not paying attention and missing the original’s meaning, which is very obviously that Yoshino was assuming based simply on the fact that Agumon went missing. But he didn’t actually attack the hamburger stand! Did they not even watch ahead to the rest of this episode to realise that?
Marcus: “Why’d you attack a hamburger stand?”
Marcus asks this of Agumon after finding him with his head dorkily stuck in a trashcan, not really all that close to the explosions and flames. Way to jump to freaking conclusions after basically just finding proof that Agumon isn’t the culprit, geez! …Though I suppose that can be partly blamed on Yoshi inexplicably insisting he definitely was.
Agumon: “Huh? I didn’t attack anything, but a hamburger sure sounds good!”
Agumon should not know what a hamburger is. Again with his dub version knowing more human things than he should.
Kudamon:  “He hasn’t been tamed. I don’t understand why he’s fighting alongside human beings.”
This just makes no sense. What the hell does “tamed” even mean? Doesn’t it just mean “has become willing to work with humans”? Because if so, he evidently has been tamed, actually. Just sounds frustratingly like Kudamon trying to insist he Knows Better than this nobody kid, and I don’t think that’s meant to be his character.
Agumon:  “Aniki! He’s really strong…!”
Masaru:  “Doesn’t that just fire you up!?”
Agumon:  “Y… yeah!”
~~~~~
Marcus: “No! Agumon!”
Agumon: “Boss! I’m fine, but could you lend a hand?”
Marcus: “Ha! How about I lend a couple of fists!?”
The dub’s version of this exchange is kinda still cute, but it loses that fun nuance that Masaru loves how strong their opponent is, and that Agumon is learning to agree with that idea thanks to him.
Yoshi: “That thing will tear you to pieces!”
See, here’s a way to avoid directly using the word “die” or “kill” while still making it clear that’s what she’s referring to, without awkwardly acting like humans can be “destroyed”.
Masaru:  “When you’re in a man’s fight, you’re already risking your life! The moment you get scared of dying is the moment you’ve lost the fight!”
~~~~~
Marcus: “Besides, the ultimate fighter is always willing to make the ultimate sacrifice!”
This significantly changes the meaning here, and instead Marcus is apparently consciously willing to get himself killed if necessary, even though the kinds of fights he’s been in before really aren’t something that’s actually worth dying for at all. Masaru’s philosophy of acknowledging but then choosing to brush aside the potential risk in order to fight better makes more sense, because he’s not actually intending to die for anything.
The dub’s changed version of this line will also not work for the callback that the original line is going to get later in the series. I’d talk a lot more about why not, but, spoilers, so I’ll save that for then.
There’s a brief snippet of music here during the Anime Sads that appears to be a sad piano variation of Probably Marcus’s Theme, which feels appropriate. I don’t remember it from my one previous dub watch-through, but I hope it gets used in some of the future much more substantial moments of Marcus being sad about things.
Masaru:  “You… How dare you hurt my follower!”
~~~~~
Marcus: “It’s… It’s fightin’ time!”
We also lose another future callback here. But on the other hand, “it’s fightin’ time!” is going to become Marcus’s catchphrase that he uses basically every time he fights (a dub-only catchphrase that Masaru has no equivalent of, and that I’m really pretty happy with), and this moment when he’s avenging Agumon getting hurt is definitely an appropriate moment for it to start being a thing.
The dub’s term for Digisoul is, instead, DNA. Luckily for the biologist in me, who would otherwise be tearing my hair out over this, this stands for something entirely different from deoxyribonucleic acid, because boy would it being that kind of DNA make absolutely zero sense. It’s still pretty awkward that it happens to be the same acronym as a commonly-known thing that it could easily be mistaken for, mind you.
I don’t know why they couldn’t just keep the term Digisoul, though. It’s a perfectly good term! It can’t even be that the dubbers have some kind of oh-no-religious-references objection to using the word “soul”, because that word is also in the dub’s opening song that we’ll be hearing every episode.
Old man:  “By mastering this technique, your Digimon can Digivolve.”
Um, sure. The technique of waving your glowing hand over the Digivice is definitely something that needs to be “mastered”.
Marcus also yells “DNA Charge!” out of nowhere for the first time. But in his case, the old man never actually mentioned the word “charge” when telling him what to do here, so it’s even less clear how he knew that was what he was supposed to say.
Alas, the English dub does not dub the original evolution songs in Digimon. The evolution music instead is an instrumental version of the dub’s opening song, which, though I prefer Believer, is an acceptable replacement in terms of creating a similarly triumphant mood.
Marcus: “That’ll teach ya! Don’t mess with my employee!”
Oh my god, wow, way to completely unintentionally mood-whiplash the triumphant moment by reminding us that this huge powerful dinosaur is actually just your subordinate in the new small business you’ve set up here, Marcus. A small business of punching everything.
Agumon:  “Aniki! I’m hungry!”
Masaru:  “What the hell… That’s so anti-climactic…”
~~~~~
Agumon: “Boss! I’m hungry.”
Marcus: “What else is new? I’m just glad you’re safe.”
This addition is cute. Originally Masaru’s just referring to the anticlimax of Agumon devolving so fast.
Masaru:  “How about going for a hamburger?”
Agumon:  “Does that taste good?”
~~~~~
Marcus: “How about a nice hamburger?”
Agumon: “Ooh! With cheese, too?”
On the one hand, at least the dub remembered the fact that this Agumon somehow already knows what a hamburger is. On the other, this raises even more questions in terms of how he also knows that they can come with cheese.
Yoshino:  “But that one’s already injured 13 students!”
~~~~~
Yoshi: “But Agumon still injured fifteen men!”
Remember how the original tried to calculate fifteen minus one and got thirteen? Well, the dub tried it and got fifteen. Somehow each of them managed to get this very simple sum wrong in a different way.
(And yes, the dub did also specifically have Lalamon sense fifteen humans at the park in the beginning. Actually, it flashes back here to a part where Yoshi was then relaying to HQ that there are fifteen victims, but that was before she saw that Marcus was still standing. I guess it’s plausible to assume that Yoshi herself forgot to subtract Marcus after that and this is her mistake rather than the writers. Not convinced that’s the case, though.)
Also, told you the dub would forget about the part in the beginning where Marcus yelled out within Yoshi’s earshot that he beat up the dudes.
Marcus: “Those were some punks claiming to be ultimate fighters who wanted to train in my area, so I fought them for it, and guess what, I won!”
This begs the question: how the hell is that park supposed to be Marcus’s training ground? Surely, it’d make most sense as a training ground if it was where people regularly come to challenge him to fights? Instead, he only fought the dudes there because he wanted to drive them away from his training ground, so that he can continue to train there, alone, in a perfectly ordinary park that isn’t a gym or anything like that. How is he supposed to train there without opponents? Does he just, like… punch the trees?
I understand if the dub wants to make Marcus have slightly less of a teenage delinquent vibe, but the resulting implications they have here instead are just amusingly nonsensical. It does not seem like they actually thought about this very hard at all.
Overall differences
Overall, the dub of this episode shows a pattern of things generally making a bit less sense and having a bit less nuance, and Marcus in particular being just a bit less interesting and distinctive than Masaru. This is going to be such a regular pattern for every single dub episode that I probably won’t even bother to remark on it in most of these summaries going forward.
In terms of more specific effect on how this episode comes across, I think the most noticeable shift is that the sense of Marcus’s empathy towards Agumon despite his species is watered down slightly. Perhaps most notably, Agumon did not become loyal to Marcus because Marcus treated him like a person, but instead just because he matched him in a fight, which is less meaningful.
The terms “boss” and “employee” also give something of a different vibe to their relationship than in the original. Obviously the dub had to localise “aniki” to something, but I don’t think this was the best choice. This’ll be a thing in every episode, of course, but I’m bringing it up here because this is where it starts.
Then there’s the part where one of Yoshi’s lines casually established that Agumon had never spoken before. As much as this doesn’t make any sense to be a thing – why would he not have spoken while being held in DATS? – I guess it makes it slightly more reasonable that DATS then sees him as just a monster? Though they should also be changing their tune quite quickly when they realise he can speak, which of course they don’t. I guess this could have been an attempt to justify the original’s issues with DATS’s attitude towards Agumon… but not a very effective one.
hmmm sometimes when i think of the name of a ship in my head i refer to the whole dynamic and relationship, but it doesnt have to necessarily be romantic and both-sided. like when i think of usuk, im thinking of the whole of them, but most of it is just uk pining over america and other toxik and shitty (n very cool) dynamics. i cant see murica as completely loving of him, not explicitly (except maybe in some temporary situations). but when i step back and look at the whole of them then i can obviously see the love and tension and deepness and blahblahh, even if when im focusing on the day to day moments it may seem completely one-sided. on the iggy side of things, his relationship w murica is obviously the most intense n obsessively loving shit he's ever had but i wont get into that classic
tl;dr "a ship doesnt necessarily refer to a explicit/romantic/requited love, it can also refer to a complex and changing relationship that may not ever even get anywhere. Or even a one-sided romance"
now, i dont like fruk, because (and yes im contradicting my explanation above a bit) i dont like to focus on the love or the romantic/sexual/whatever part of their relationship. but i DO love their relationship, which contains a lot of things, some of them ARE sex and love. but, i dont know, in my head that part is not relevant to the whole concept of their dynamics and their bond as a whole.
mm thats why i usually try to avoid saying 'fruk' when i talk about my interpretation of those two charas, cus i dont want ppl to think i'm referring to the ship. i prefer to say eng & france n stuff like that. same with prus and hungary, yeah maybe they fucked, but in my head the important characteristic of their bond is for instance, their friendship and rivalry. the sex is just a tool to get to and highlight those important parts
'usuk' in my head is not us and uk, usuk is usuk, cus in their relationship the part where they feel romantic love and all that shit is v e r y important.. So much that i cant even imagine the character of iggy without him being in love with murica, to me thats just an intrinsic part of his character. So yeah the “ship” aspect of their relationship is quite the main point for me. like everything they do that has to do with the other is affected by this thing. also lil obvious side-note. sex and romance is not the only way to show and express love, its just the most known ones. And also we are talking about countries in the shape of humans, and they are absolutely not humans, so i can do whatever the fuck i want with them. iggy expresses his love for murica in ways that he himself doesnt even know or realise, all of that while he fucks the entirety of europe on the side. He may not ever lay a finger on him and with that he’s being 200% more genuine and vulnerable than any time he fucks spain or whoever. usuk FOR LIFE
basically: To me a ‘ship’ is not referring to the actual relationship but to the angle with which you approach it. An established ‘romantic’ relationship may not be a ship if its not relevant to you or your story, but a dude who’s in love with a celebrity that lives in another continent that he’s never seen may be a ship if thats what makes sense to what youre imagining. for instance i love biker x jacket even though they never interact. I just like to think of the potential of their personalities together. Not explicit but still… “romantic”? I dont know what words to use to explain those thoughts. But so like, france n iggz: explicit, not “romantic”. Usuk: “romantic” but not explicit? (jiji who am i kidding, maybe sometimes it does get explicit but whatever, thats the general idea)
I love to consume one-sided ships, but im still not comfortable enough to let myself do it? Perhaps in the future my usuk will be completely one-sided, who knows. I still got residual damage from exposure to mainstream ship dynamics as a kid Also i lied. Ijijij i do like fruk a bit, i do think that theres potential for some cute stuffz, specially when they are young. I think that they are super close, and there are million ways of showing that. I dislike fruk when its just fruk in a bubble and thats it. But i love it when its surrounded by the context of this whole hetaverse that lives in my brain (that has to do with me not being interested in other fan’s creations). No england ship ever gets to what usuk is for me, n dats awesom. I like to think that england just entirely took his own heart, pulled it out of his chest, and handed it over to america (along with his multiple other toxicities emoji of cowboy smiling). His heart has already found a place but that doesnt mean he cannot experience sum exciting stuffz with other countries!!! In fact he does, a lot, just like the rest of the charas!!! EVERY SHIP IN HETALIA IS CANON, go have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A Defence of Kataang with regards to how they are portrayed in TLoK (it’s long but there’s headcanons at the end)
Note: This is not about shipping wars. This is a safe zone. This is not about Zutara vs Kataang. This is me defending Kataang and the characters themselves...from the writers.
I initially wrote this as a response to a post that got me heated. My reblog just made it too long so here it is as its own post.
Now this post ripped apart Kataang as a couple but more than that said some stuff about Aang himself that hurt my heart. I didn’t really want to pick on this post but its condemning of Kataang was based almost entirely in what we know of them as parents in TLoK and honestly it’s that lil nugget of canon that I take issue with. It has bothered me from the get go because it doesn’t make sense from a writing and story perspective, and it’s been pissing me off since I watched it.
TL;DR nice and early bc this post is gonna be a long one:
This particular condemnation of Kataang rests almost entirely on the SHITTY way they were portrayed as parents by the writers of LoK, and in all honesty, on this particular topic, canon should be ignored.
Overall Kataang parenting is of my biggest gripes with LoK because in terms of writing it’s totally incongruous - it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t align, and it makes zero sense for what we know of those characters, and I don’t know if I can ever forgive the showrunners for allowing it to be written it into canon.
I will also preface this by saying I like LoK - love it. I had a scroll through the comments and reblogs on this post, and a lot of the hate towards this portrayal of Kataang ended up being blamed on the “terrible writing of LoK” which is not where I stand at all. That being said I am so angry at the writers for this one.
The other portion of the concurring comments that were very hateful towards Kataang came from Zutara shippers and honestly for me, although I do ship Kataang, this not a just a Kataang issue. I’m of the belief that Zutara would’ve just as easily been written to have similar issues due to very similar dynamics - Zutara also would have been two powerful benders from very different cultures, and with Zuko/Aang (whoever you ship w her) having a massively important global leadership role that is embedded in who they are, and therefore impossible to ignore as a factor in their relationship.
Now let me be clear, my desire to reject canon on this front is by no means me wanting to believe the best of my faves, and not wanting to hear a word against Aang. It’s not even necessarily a defence of Kataang bc I ship it that hard (I mean I do but I can set that aside for the sake of argument if that’s what you need from me here).
The first, and main issue people have with Aang/Kataang in Korra, is the first point of the original post:
So why in hell would [Katara] be okay with Aang ignoring TWO of their children’s complete existence once he found out they had an airbending son?
And I agree with the post on this front; Katara would not have allowed her children to each be treated differently by their father. I had the same initial thought when watching LoK, and it’s the reason I hate and want to ignore the canon of LoK so badly.
As much as it hurts to think of, we have to accept that Aang wouldn’t have been able to stop his preferential treatment for Tenzin from bleeding through into his parenting just out of a desperate desire to save his culture (which is absolutely understandable - doesn’t make it okay, but it’s understandable; Aang suffered an incredible loss, a massive cultural trauma which he alone carries the burden of). So of course he wasn’t able to hide how excited he was, and forgot to be mindful of his attitude and behaviour towards Kya and Bumi. So this aspect of canon Kataang? Yeah, I’m with it. So far so good. EXCEPT the most unrealistic element of canon is now that Katara would let him. I simply do not believe for a second that Katara would’ve allowed Aang to be the kind of parent LoK painted him to be.
However, I do not think it would’ve been a point of contention between the two of them! Katara would pull him aside, Katara would gently (but firmly) point out what Aang mightn’t be able to see for himself - he’s focusing too hard on Tenzin.
And Aang would listen.
All throughout A;tLA the two of them often help the other sort through their stuff. Aang has a great track record of being receptive to Katara’s advice and help (calming him down when discovering Monk Gyatso’s body, The Desert when he Appa is stolen, Serpent’s Pass when he’s bottling his feelings about Appa being missing). He’s also just so receptive to others’ ideas - he just goes with it and trusts in his friends (think of his trust in Katara’s plan to rescue Haru, his trust in staying behind with Sokka in the library to get the eclipse info). Aang’s humility is one of the most incredible things about him and it’s at the core of who he is. He would absolutely be able to hear Katara telling him he’s focusing too hard on one child - he would be open, and he’d listen.
So to me now canon just does not make sense at all. it does not align with their established character traits. And yes, people change as they get older and grow into adulthood but honestly, the elements of their respective personalities that we’re talking about here are pretty core elements of who these two people are.
Katara has always been fiercely protective of those she loves, strongwilled, stubborn, and ready to (vocally or physically) fight for what she believes is right and that wouldn’t disappear as she gets older. She wouldn’t let Aang’s preferrential treatment slide.
Aang has always been, and chose to be despite his loss, an optimistic, kind, believe in the best of humanity kind of person. He’s open to all points of view, he’s a good listener, he always tries his absolute best to find solutions that are good for everyone. And again his humility, his willingness to love, is who he is.  He believes all humans (including fkn OZAI) and all life are sacred, he believes in the absolute right to life. The kid is a vegetarian for crying out loud.
Now the parts of the take in the post that hurt my heart to read about what OP thinks of Aang:
“Aang never made an attempt to establish anything resembling a real familial unit with Katara, basically just stayed around until she popped out an Airbender [...] she was treated like some trophy wife to give birth to airbenders and that’s it!”
I wasn’t going to address this in this post until I read the comments in the notes, because people seem to agree. They share the sentiment that Katara was reduced to “just a love interest” by the two ending up together.
However I do very much take issue w the notion that Aang “basically just stayed around until she popped out an Airbender” (and honestly that entire paragraph - we don’t actually know that Aang didn’t make an effort to establish a family unit). As much as the LoK writers fucked up in their portrayal of Kataang as parents, this is a much harsher judgement of Aang’s character as a husband and father than anything implied by Aang and Katara’s children. I just don’t buy that Aang would view Katara (or anyone he married, even if you don’t ship Kataang) as a trophy wife, whose only role is to have airbender children. He never has viewed her that way - he has always looked at her like she’s the sun, and the most important person to him after she pulled him out of the iceburg. He loves her the most of anyone on the planet. It does not align with his character, his values or beliefs that he’d think of her (or any partner) that way. He is so besotted with Katara for who she is it HURT me to read that part of your take. Aang simply would never. Look at how he looks at her!
Tumblr media
What’s more is the unwavering respect and deference he shows Katara as his waterbending master - he recognises and loves her as the whole, complete, three dimensional, TALENTED POWERFUL INCREDIBLE WOMAN that she is. She is NEVER “just” a love interest for Aang. (But ALSO, do we respect Suki any less for being Sokka’s obvious love interest??? No. suki is written to be so badass that Sokka is HER love interest and I think Katara has equally badass energy but I digress).
Moving on!
OP made an excellent point that there would’ve been culturally different values between the two but I don’t think it would’ve been family that was the clashing point. Yes the airbenders value spirituality and enlightenment. But they lived together in massive communities! They supported and raised one another. Their community and culture was strong, and they were bonded in their spirituality! They value love, as well as enlightenment, peace, and the lives of all.
Now, again the points they made about the cultural divides within the Kataang family unit are valid, but also again I dislike how they chose to portray this in LoK. It would definitely be a struggle they faced as a couple. However I think they really missed an opportunity here with where they took it. Because they do at one point in the comics have Katara bring up the fact that their family will be a blend of two cultures, and she brings it up because Aang is trying so hard to bring balance back to the world by means of seperation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They’ve known from the get go of being a couple that they’re going to have to navigate being a culturally blended family unit.
So I find it so shitty that they wrote it so that Kya got to learn the waterbending culture, Tenzin got Air and bumi got…nothing? It’s dangerously close to the way Disney does the “the girls are carbon copies of mum, and the boys are carbon copies of dad” thing (think Lady and the Tramp). It’s lazy. Especially when we had that “separation is an illusion” episode, AND things like Zuko learning different nation’s styles and applying them to his firebending, and Sokka learning an element of strategy or fighting from every nation.
So give us Kya using Airbending moves with her waterbending (maybe she invents the water scooter)! Give us Tenzin doing more grounded moves that Aunty Toph (or Lin, while they were together) taught him from earthbending.
There are much more creative ways to illustrate the bumps and troubles Kataang might have run into in trying to navigate incorporating equal parts of their cultures in their children and family unit. Even just smaller scale issues like food and meals - how do they figure out how to do mealstimes with Aang’s vegetarianism with Katara’s culturally significant Water Tribe meat dishes? And then even taking into account how picky little kids can be!
Give me a scene where they literally just ate moon pies for a week because toddler Kya would scream if you put anything else down in front of her.
Maybe Bumi demanded sea prunes over and over but Katara and Bumi are the only ones who like them, and Bumi bonds with his mother this way - they go on little one-on-one outings to water tribe restaurants in Republic City, searching for the most authentic sea prunes!
Kya maybe likes the water tribe fashions the most because it helps her connect with her namesake BUT Kya also has a playful sense of humour - not unlike Monk Gyatso - Aang sees how much she loved moon pies and teaches her to throw them with waterbending.
We know Tenzin was a calm, quiet, and possibly shy child. Maybe he loved to hole himself away learning crafts. Give me Tenzin learning to tattoo, Tenzin learning to carve (and carving his first glider - it crashes of course), but also Tenzin learning to carve water tribe adornments and necklaces. Katara tries at first but when she gets busy Sokka comes in and teaches Tenzin to break all the carving rules Katara has laid down (”it doesn’t need to be perfect my little pupil - let the creativity flow!”)
Tenzin may not be able to waterbend but that doesn’t mean he can’t learn other means of healing. As the littlest he spent a lot of time watching Katara work - she teaches him to tie splints, dress wounds, and yes deliver babies.
If you made it here I love you so much for reading. I love sharing my thoughts so HIGH FIVE YOU MADE IT, ur now my friend - the friendship is non-refundable sorry 😌😌
It's 2021 & tbh I'm happy to see you still serving the truth. So many ppl hate Sakura it's rlly sad. I see hate for her from NH & SNS mostly about her "forcing" her feelings on others like she herself didnt realize that & was stuck trying the alleviate that be growing stronger as her main plot point. Her loss of development is 99% SP NH agenda. & honestly I still wish Sasuke got w/ NO ONE, not even Naruto. He wasnt good to anyone, even if he respected them. [1]
& in general I hate the idea that Sasuke HAD to end up w/ someone romantically to try find happiness & that person should have been Naruto/Sakura/etc. bc he COULD had a happy, content, redemption arc w/o a romantic partner. Not everything great in this world is driven by romantic companionship & Sasuke is honestly not cut out for it. I wish he had platonic healing & mending arcs, not this focus on finding the "right one" to bed with.
I will go down in my grave wishing Sasuke could be aromantic/asexual representation in a positive redemption arc of him making amends & fixing bonds w/o needing the "oh so powerful & miraculous" powers of romantic fixation.
__________________________________________________________
Well my parents taught me that a lie has short legs and it won’t last for long. And all you do is deceive yourself with lying so I took that lesson to the very heart through my upbringing and tried to stay as real as I can be.
I’m the type of person who prefers a hard truth over a sweet lie any day. I have ruined relationships with people because of this way of being. Because I met people in my life that preferred to be sweet talked than told the cold truth.
I am not like that, so yeah.
Now, as for the Sakura hate... well, idk but I’ve also noticed a change in fandom support. Yes, she is still hated but the support for her grew over the years. I’m telling you, it’s one of the things I noticed from the very beginning as I came back to the fandom.
But as I said in a thread on Twitter of mine, while I loved seeing that support, there are two factors that sadden me.
1. The love is directed at Sakura Uchiha, not Sakura Haruno and
 2. The fandom as a whole has become a lot similar to the other side of the fandom that used to bully us Sakura fans back in the day.
Of course, I am talking general aspects, I am sure that there are some particularities here and there. But sadly that's the truth. Which made me think about the following things. Are people really liking Sakura Haruno or Sakura Uchiha?
Because it makes me wonder... where was this love back when Sakura was getting her heroine status ripped? Where was it? Are you loving Sakura now just because she's married into the Uchiha clan? Because if so, that's just sad. And shallow. Like ppl used to call her.
And I know it might ruffle some jimmies, but it's the truth. It's an honest and pure observation, after being gone from the fandom for so long. Don't get me wrong, I love that she's loved and supported now, but I can't help but feel that she is because of the wrong reasons.
As for Sasuke, the problem is that the show rewards him with something that Naruto worked for.
We’re never really shown how he is sorry about all the misery he put everyone through.
People say that  ohhh, he was a victim. But wait. So was Naruto. He didn’t turn into that?
Not saying that what he did didn’t have an impact on him, but at the end of the day it boils down to CHOICE. Which Sasuke’s plot even is about. He CHOSE to go to Orochimaru. He CHOSE to kill Itachi. He CHOSE to destroy Konoha. HE CHOSE TO WANT TO KILL THE GOKAGE at the end!
And problem is that the plot doesn’t hold him accountable for that. And I will never shut up about how in other media authors don’t excuse the antagonist for his actions.
See FMA’s Scar. It’s the EXACT same thing. He had his clan murdered. Same thing. Genocide.
But do you see FMA’s plot excusing him for his actions like Naruto does? No, it doesn’t.
And I think that’s the core problem.
Like I always said: I have a love-hate relationship with Sasuke. I love the fact that he challenges the status quo, but I hate how he goes about it and how the story gives him a free pass.
Because it all feels hollow. Not to mention is a dangerous morale to leave behind. Especially to the newer generation of young adults who are shaping their character.
It’s sends a message that if you suffered, you get a free pass to do whatever shit you want cuz at the end of the day you get a free pass without having to work hard to get your atonement.
That’s why I love the fight in Jujutsu Kaisen between Panda and Mechamaru. Mechamaru tries to victimize himself and find excuses for his actions, but Panda tells it like it is.
Just because you have suffered, it doesn’t give you the right to be an ass, basically.
As for Sakura and her development, yeah. Everyone acts like an ostrich and hide their heads in the ground pretending that it wasn’t because of SP’s favoritism and mischaracterization that Sakura wasn’t hated.
Well it was that exact same thing that made people hate her. Like I know at some point back in the day, SP had to excuse themselves that noo, they don’t hate Sakura.
Yeah right... Cuz that’s why they made an omake where she was jealous of Hinata and how Hinata was stealing the heroine status from her.
They were slowly inoculating this idea into the fandom’s perception.
And I remember how I used to tell people about it back in the day. SSers as well.
Guys Sakura is gonna be sidelined because of this. She isn’t gonna be the heroine anymore. But did someone listen? Noo, they didn’t.
Because all they saw was the fact that I was a NaruSaku fan and to hell with me. Out of the fear of NaruSaku might potentially win, they preferred to just shut up.
And then guess what? TL came and they called Hinata the heroine of Naruto’s story.
And I was like lol, I goddamn told you so. But for you it was more important for NaruSaku to lose than Sakura keeping her status, right?
As for who Sasuke should’ve ended-up with? Well that is hard to tell. Ofc, personally due to my preference for symbolism and seeing the power balance, it would’ve been nice to see him paired-up with Karin.
Cuz I feel Karin had what it took to shake him up, cuz she didn’t take his BS. But that’s just me and I would’ve totally been okay with an arc like you proposed.
However, yeah, I don’t see him with Sakura at all , I’m sorry. As much as I would’ve liked to.
Hell, I should’ve been happy as a former SS. Yet I wasn’t.
But I guess this boils down to each person’s principles. And I know where mine lie. :)
Pre-Rewatch Notes
So since I’m going to be doing a mix of in-timeline and full retrospective text value of the canon, one of the things I’d like to actually get out of the way is the Key Concepts of the eras, most explicitly Kripke and Dabb as the start and end.
The Key concepts are the single most important framework in media studies. They have evolved as a means of understanding a text by using a critical framework, rather than just making unconnected and meaningless observations. Throughout the course, you will need to refer to the Key Concepts and use the terms you learn when analysing media texts. One way to remember the Key Concepts is to use the mnemonic "RAILING". Representations, Audiences, Institutions, (Media) Language, Ideology, Narrative, Genre.
(also sometimes called MIGRAIN if using Media Language to clarify rather than spoken language)
With this as my note in front of the cut, I’m going to drop the rest behind one while I try to sort out the RAILING of the show before I even try to start establishing long term collective rewatch arguments on the canon. I do also invite some discussion on these, as in, if you feel my markers are off, or if I’m missing anything that I could probably negotiate the text.
Pulling, for my sanity, from here [x]
SO FIRST TO DEFINE:
Media Language This is how media producers communicate their ideas to the audience. Below are some examples to think about when considering media language:
Images used
Words used
Use of colour
Signs and signifiers
Connotative meaning
Use of sound
Iconography
Camera angles and picture composition
Institutions The companies who produce the media. Fox, Disney, CNN, the BBC, Warner Brothers etc will have a set of Institutional Values; beliefs on aspects of life e.g. their political stance or moral beliefs etc. Also, whether they have to make large profits for a board of directors. These institutional values will guide what their media products include. You should consider who made a particular media product and what impact this has on that product.
Genre The style of the media form.
A film could be Horror or Action.
A book could be Fantasy or Thriller.
A computer game could be RPG or Sports Simulation.
A website could be News or Social Networking.
Representation How media producers show a thing, person or group of people.
May be positive or negative.
Why have they chosen to show them in this way?
Think about the 5 w’s: who, what, where, when and why?
Audience
The people who buy and consume media.
Who are they?
What do they want from the media product?
How does the media product fulfill these wants?
Use theories such as Uses and Gratification theory.
Ideology Ties in with Institution.
What values and beliefs underpin the product?
How does this fit with the values of society?
Narrative How is the text structured?
Use Todorov’s Theory of Narrative Structure.
Use Propp’s Character Theory.
Use Strauss’ Theory of Binary Opposition
I’m going to use VERY shorthand notes on these moving forward.
So here’s what I see off the cuff:
KRIPKE ERA
Media Language Faded film stock to denote horror; darkness; emphasis on SFX like footsteps. Grim cinematic. Eventual christian imagery overlapping urban myth icons. Faded color palettes. Fairly classic color use (pink or white for femininity or purity, etc). Nostalgic classic rock/music. Nostalgia, general. Muscle cars. "Classic american masculinity." Hopelessness seeking hope.
Institutions WB, CW, and the timeline of 2005-2009. Kripke, Singer. Manners. McGee. Sgriccia.
Genre Horror, survival, drama
Representation Americana, working class america, "american masculinity", fraternity; Sam and Dean vs the world with occasional help from other friends or family in the life. Metanarrative hostility to issues like queerness reflective of both time and institution at the time.
Audience Originally targeted at young/teen men (to “not be like other girl shows on the network”), became split demographic. Split conservative and liberal demographic. Discussion on how these are handled will come up over the study.
Ideology Fraternal bonds. Arguably, family. Hero's sacrifice for the greater good.
Narrative Campbell, Hero's Journey; Rule of Cool; Christendom; Man vs Divine
GAMBLE
Media Language Film stock, brightness, saturation at fairly standard media level -- sometimes unstable. Standard cinematics. Residual christian imagery overlapping lovecraft. Decline in classic music from Kripke. Unclear or unreliable interpersonal messaging. Arguably southern gothic. Hopelessness.
Institutions WB, CW, and the timeline of 2010-2011. Gamble, Singer. McGee. Sgriccia. Norman Bee. Edlund.
Genre Teen Drama, Adventure
Representation Established characters Sam and Dean. Fraternity. Sam and Dean vs the world.
Audience Originally targeted at young women, became split demographic. Split conservative and liberal demographic. Discussion on how these are handled will come up over the study.
Ideology Brothers quarreling; fight monsters; I don't know. Did she know? "Everything is tragic but have some dick jokes"
Narrative Lovecraft. Does anyone know. "I need to make more episodes"
CARVER
Media Language Brightened film stock with increased saturation establishes fantasy setting. Smash cut interruptions to former grim cinematics offset more hopeful visuals. Fairly media standard lighting and color use in related fantasy cinema. Found family. Hope against hopeless odds.
Institutions WB, CW, and the timeline of 2012-2014 (arguably 2015). Carver, Singer. Glass. Sgriccia.
Genre Fantasy, Adventure, drama
Representation Widened character base. Widened hero's journey arcs (castiel). Masculinity messaging of the past has not vanished, but has dampened and become less hostile to the LGBTQ and woman audience. Regular Cast widened (Crowley, Castiel)
Audience Split gender demographic. Split conservative and liberal demographic. Split age demographic from targeting vs duration. Increasingly digital demographic and marketing; begins increasing queer, poc and other audience. International boom (Netflix deal, digital 2012+). Discussion on how these are handled will come up over the study.
Ideology Found Family, Hope against odds. Free Will highlighted.  Destructive or harmful relationships. Humanity. The human journey.
Narrative Self-established TV episodical, largely internal lore, residual christianized mythos or christendom. Castiel acquires first proper hero’s journey personal arc/lens. Multiple relationships vs world, man vs world
DABB
Media Language Carries from carver; largely identical but more close-up shots and interaction shots for drama focus. Internal color pallate unique to its own while still interacting with Carver standard media pallate.
Institutions WB, CW, and the timeline of 2015-2020. Dabb, Singer. Sgriccia. Buckner, Leming. S15: Berens. CW has begun rebranding into a “queer friendly” platform with unreliable results.
Genre High-fantasy, drama, arguably soap.
Representation Carries heavily from Carver, plus. Expansion of queer creatives adds queer voice to the text. Queer text manifests over time into show's canon text. Lack of metanarrative hostility has become space for queer text. Attempted routine inclusion of women, queer characters. While not a queer piece, establishes queer narrative with roots as far back as Kripke. While still maintaining strong leads, Regular Cast and other leading cast has expanded (Crowley, Castiel, Jack, other major recognizeable faces: Rowena, Wayward). It flirts with ensemble presentation without ever landing on it wholly.
Audience Split gender demographic skewing towards women. Split conservative and liberal demographic skewing towards liberal. Multiple generations of demographic from longevity. Primarily digital demographic and marketing (top 99.9% digital but a bottom live ratings performer on live TV outside of the CW); primarily queer, poc and other audience. International boom. Discussion on how these are handled will come up over the study.
Ideology Found family. hope against odds/defining the odds. Free Will vs authoritative power. Psychological rebuilding*. The family journey. The family unit. Non-nuclear families. (finale not withstanding)
Narrative Self-established TV episodical, largely internal lore, subverting christendom and authority with alchemy or gnosticism. Optimism vs Nihilism. Contrasting ending (see: Nihilism) Campbell. Other characters, like Jack, begin claiming narrative presence like Carver era Castiel, whereas Castiel maintains or expands on his. Man vs Divine vs Man IS Divine
These will be used to address the text during the large scale rewatch.
Each era has its own parameters to best address its showrunners’ visions in. Each era will receive snapshots unto itself, or snapshots also only in regards to how it adapts to the previous text. On the other hand, as half the goal is also a full retrospective to address the complete body of the text since the show stands as a complete body of word and I shouldn’t change my tools over and over again throughout for the complete-text study the same way I will by showrunner era.
I’m going to make a PITCH on the most likely way to give this a strong reading through to prepare what targets to keep an eye on as they evolve. This may change along the way if at any point I realize the first-glance overview was wrong, but
OVERVIEW MIGRAIN
Media Language The growth from hopeless dark into vivid potential; the lost heroes still oblivious to the world, their vision distant and dark to begin. Contrast faded dark to vivid and bright as much over timeline as Carver did between shots. Consider addressing the increased interpersonal camera work that blooms in later seasons for commentary in regards to the increased interpersonal complexity and growth of the cast.
Institutions WB, CW, and the timeline of 2005-2009 as the holdover of some audience being maintained with inevitable pressures from the outside world of 2020 forcing change.
Genre Survival, drama, fantasy
Representation Americana, fraternity, family; Split Hero's Journey Narratives. Late-end queer story affirmation demands a look at the body of the text for its queer journey throughout, though the work itself should not be expected to perform as an LGBT genre work but rather a Survival-Drama-Fantasy work with queer characters. Loved ones versus external forces.
Audience Too shifting to consider in the target read anymore.
Ideology Expanding knowledge. Growing expansion of the world first to find, then surpass and subvert God--or at least their intention. The growth out of expectations of work or behavior into passions and dreams. Finding and pursuing hope. Fraternal bonds. Family, Found Family. Queerness. Hero's sacrifice for the greater good, but to find and define what that greater good is, one must know the self through the family. Free Will vs authoritative power. Psychological rebuilding*. The family journey. The family unit. Non-nuclear families.
Narrative Campbell, Hero's Journey; Occasional intertext (On the Road, Vonnegut, Lovecraft). Varied mythos, best collected and then addressed and subverted through gnostic thoughtform per the ending.
lets talk about donald and the boys
so the triplets very obviously and very purposefully take different things from their parental figures, namely Donald, Scrooge and Della. (Webby does as well, but it’s a bit different cus she grew up in a diffrent enviroment/has mrs beakly so i’d rather do a sperate post for her)
anyway, when it comes to the boys they’re a mix of diffrent aspects of their parental figures + new stuff thats just them. and i think that’s really great how the crew made them such multi dimensional characters like that!
but, when it comes to donald at least these similarites between him and the boys aren’t quite so explicit like it is when it comes to scrooge and della. which makes sense, theres alot of missed time w/ both of them and they’re learning about eachother and noticing these things for the first time. plus the things donald passed down are the most subtle, i think bc he’s the one who raised them
so i kinda wanted to call attention to the similarities between don and the boys!! i might do one w/ the similaraties between the triplets and the others asp, we’ll see lol
so! lets begin.:)
huey:
- i think the similarities between him and don are kinda the most obvious, but lets go through them anyway
- obvi the parental/careing nature
- and the anger :P
- that expression in rumble for Ragnarok
- they both wear hats and i think thats cute
- i feel like theres not too much to say which kinda sucks!! bc i love their relationship!! and like they’re getting a whole ass season for the two of them (like how we had dewey + scrooge and louie + della) im just. idk theres not too much to say that hasn’t been noticed but i love their relationship
dewey:
- a bit opposite to huey, i think their relationship is kinda the most looked over one
- which sucks!! pls frank give us don/dewey bonding plsss
- anyway
- for one, smthn that i was ECSTATIC to see in ‘rumble for ragnorock’ was dewey’s determination being put to the test. i don’t know how to gif but y’all how have you not done a parallel of that to don in house of the lucky gander??? dewey’s always been super determined (see his determination to adventure in the first few eps, determination to find out about della, etc) and that 100% comes from his dad/uncle!!!
- i think the main reason ^^ that particular similarity is overlooked is bc dewey and don use their determanation in very diffrent ways. dewey more for adventure, and don more to keep everyone safe.
(ik that della is also super determined and it could come from that, but i like to think it comes from both of them! don and della are very similar and alot of their influence overlaps. like, the adventuring spirit is smthn usually atributed only as a dewy-della thing (or a della/scrooge w/ the kids thing) but i think that comes a  little from don too!! he used to love adventuring b4 della was lost. sure he was more cautious, but he loved it just as much as they did!!)
- sorry for the tangent!! next thing!
- both have an affinity for the color blue and water :). on a related note, the way they were so happy making mermaid tails together gives me life
- both feel the need to prove themselves!!! this is a huge one!! and idk how noone has called it out sooner??
- don has shown alot that he feels insecure with who he is and worries about not being enough for the people around him. see: house of the lucky gander, town where everyone was nice, and just the whole thing w/ his voice
- dewey is alot the same! super desperate to prove himself and be liked (see: everything,,,, but specifically: Atlantis/first ep, his dream in nightmare on killmonter hill, literally all of the new ep, the seed vault, so much other stuff omg, etc)
- anyway i really hope these 2 get a bonding ep and get to work through this together. it’s a flaw they both have and i hope they can help eachother with it!! especially bc i think it’s a thing others may not be able to help them w/ bc they need someone who really Gets it u know?
- pls just let these bois be confident they deserve it
louie:
- baby boi
- ok, first one i feel like may be kinda controversial but lets go anyway
- i think that their biggest similarity is their shared emotional maturity
- and yeah ik huey is mature but he’s not mature in the same way that louie and donald are
- like.... u know at the end of shadow war how don gets the boys to decide to go back? and how louie is just.... so often the one to build up the others in his fam/give them a pep talk? i really think that comes from donald
- also- they’re both the only ones to actually scheme lol. donald kinda accidentally (he tries not to encorage louie’s sceming even if he kinda does the same thing at times) like w/ how he lies to the caballeros and how he tricks the kids into showing up during shadow war
- also they share how they’re both more cautious and a bit more scared even if they come along anyway
- also also just about the only characters besides scrooge who care about money. ik it’s because don is broke and the other two don’t really care but idk... i think the fact that they grew up relitivly poor and don is struggling w/ money in like half of his plots makes the similarity mean a bit more
- willingness to sacrifice for fam- see harp be gone for louie doing this, and just... everything for don. they both value fam over everything even what’s important to them, which is true for about every character but they don’t seem to get tested as much on it as the two of them
All three:
-just wanted to add some random small details that all three have that are similar to don :)
- first- love of fam/willing to do anything for them. kinda already mentioned it w/ louie, and again it’s smthn shared by most characters but i wanted to mention it again :)
- their cynicism!! The boys all have their cynical moments and i think it’s cute they’re influenced by don’s more dry humor
- and this last one isn’t really a similarity but I just wanted to point out how in tune they are w/ don and eachother bc it makes me super happy :)
- there’s probably more but I’m out of energy sry y’all. Feel free to add ur own tho I’d love to hear what y’all noticed!!!
mod a’s lgbt musicals
Hi there! I’m a big theatre kid so I thought for pride month I’d put together a list of LGBTQ musicals. Despite its association with queer people, musical theatre is not known for its amazing representation. I’ve put together a list here of musicals I know of with queer characters. I’ve tried to avoid those where the queer characters are incredibly minor roles or those where the representation is just not good enough to be salvageable (*side eyes Legally Blonde*) I know there are many musicals I will have missed out but these are the ones I am most aware of. Feel free to add more! So without further ado, here it is.
Fun Home
The big Tony winner of 2015! Based on Alison Bechdel, a butch lesbian cartoonist. At the age of 43, she looks for new material by trying to explore her past and her relationship with her closeted gay dad. Looks back at a version of herself when she was 10 and a “tomboy” and at 19 when she came out and got her first girlfriend. Has very cute lighthearted moments as well as very sad moments. Has a beautiful song where small Alison sees a butch deliverywoman. Problems in that since the original broadway cast, Alison’s costume has got less butch. Content warning for suicide.
Here’s their Tony performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMAuesRJm1E
The Color Purple
Based on Alice Walker’s novel about black women in the 1930s. Follows Celie who has been abused by men her whole life who discovers she is a lesbian but also makes a journey of self discovery and learns to love herself. Her love interest is a bisexual woman. Won best revival at the Tonys in 2016. Content warning for discussion/implied sexual abuse.
Here’s their Tony performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k2xzQyT2bk
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie
A teenage gay boy in Sheffield wants to be a drag queen and go to prom in a dress.Also a nice touch that is does not focus on him having a relationship (since he is sixteen) and him having to come out as he is already out. Focuses on his close relationship with his supportive mother. Has a diverse cast. Jamie is currently played by a black actor and his best friend wears a hijab and has a very diverse ensemble as well. Unfortunately has a part where Jamie responds to a homophobic bully by calling him a bunch of ableist and classist slurs.
Here’s a clip of the most popular song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7C3FuFWDdw
The Prom
Emma is a lesbian teenager in Indiana whose prom is cancelled by the PTA after she requests to bring her girlfriend to it. A group of Broadway actors come down to help her campaign to be allowed to attend prom, as well as styling her, helping her work on her confidence and educating the town’s people. What ensues is basically a two hour musical episode of Queer Eye. Cheesy and fun with so many musical theatre references crammed in. My one issue is that the show is rather harsh on people who are closeted since Emma has conflicted with her girlfriend Alyssa because she is not ready to come out.
Here’s a clip of their Tony performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGcG_r5xv3E
Rent
Probably the most well known on this list. Artists in New York during the AIDS crisis. Two of the main couples featured are queer: Maureen is bisexual and in a relationship with Joanne who is a lesbian, and Angel is a transgender woman of color in a relationship with Collins, a presumably bisexual man. However, she tends to be played bi cis men and there are instances of her being misgendered by the main characters uncritically. In Rent Live (2019), all instances of her being misgendered were removed and her gender identity was confirmed. She was played in this by Valentina, an nb drag queen and has also been played by Pose’s MJ Rodriguez, a trans woman. Very diverse with Jewish characters and people of colour and in the live show, only 1 of the 8 main characters was white. Has been criticised over the years, mainly for its biphobic portrayal of Maureen who is promiscuous and implied to cheat, but in the 90s did a lot for the LGBTQ community and is more progressive than a lot of media even now.
Here’s a clip of Maureen and Joanne from Rent Live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06oCfKYYPTY
And here’s some Angel and Collins: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hl-M94o_x8
Falsettos
Marvin comes out as gay in the late 70s but decides to move his ex wife and son in with his boyfriend. Addresses AIDS crisis in Act 2. Has “lesbians from next door” in act 2. F Revived on Broadway in 2016. All of the characters are Jewish. Unfortunately, in revival casts, very few actors tend to be Jewish.
Here’s the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjnAHOdMQVk
Come From Away
In the aftermath of 9/11, 38 planes are diverted to a small town in Canada called Gander. Shows people of different races and nationalities bonding in a scary time. Addresses Islamophobia. Has one song called Prayer where prayers from different religions overlap. Has an interracial gay couple called Kevin and Kevin. They break up in the end but are very important characters. Won best direction of a musical in 2017. The Broadway production starred Jenn Colella who has referred to herself as ‘mostly gay’.
Here’s a clip of Jenn Colella singing a song from the musical: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8ukgH6U-d0
Head Over Heels
Honestly I don’t quite know what this musical is about, even by reading the plot summary and listening to the soundtrack. I know it’s set in a Tudor fantasy world and that there are wlw couples as well as an explicitly non binary character, played by Peppermint, a trans woman, and that there are interracial couples and plus sized actors. It is a jukebox musical using songs by the Go-Gos and yes the wlw anthem that is Heaven is a Place on Earth is one of them. The soundtrack is fantastic even if you can’t follow what is going on.
Here are some show clips: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wx2qQ7QAPm0
Spring Awakening
German school kids in the 19th century discovering their sexuality. Two of the schoolboy supporting characters, Ernst and Hänschen, have a romance when they have a reprise of an earlier song in Act 2.  A BIG content warning as it has graphic discussions of rape and songs about it and a sex scene with very dubious consent. However there was a very wonderful 2016 revival using deaf actors and sign language.
This is another one you can very easily find the full show of on YouTube which I won’t link. However here’s the Tony performance for the revival: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSagsMcak4Q
If/Then
A woman named Elizabeth (originally played by Idina Menzel) moves to New York after a divorce and contemplated how different her life would be if she took two different paths. Four supporting queer characters. Her ex-boyfriend is bisexual and played by Anthony Rapp (who is bisexual in real life) and he gets a boyfriend in one timeline. Another of her friends is a lesbian called Kate who marries her girlfriend in the musical. Problems occur as in both timelines, cheating goes on in the lesbian relationship although they stay together in one. Elizabeth also says she doesn’t believe in bisexuals, a view no one ever challenges her on, however Lucas is very clearly bisexual which is some proof for the audience that she is wrong.
I’m not going to link it here but there are many very high quality bootlegs on it on YouTube if you want to watch,
Ghost Quartet
A bit of a weird one. This is more of a concept album. There are four performers who each play instruments and they tell the stories of many interconnected timelines. It is very hard to explain but there are souls travelling through time who keep being reincarnated as different people with different relationships to each other which usually end with one woman killing the other. In the song Soldier & Rose, the ghosts Rose and Pearl are lovers as Rose seduces the soldier for her honey.  In the song Four Friends, for one chorus the men sing “I like to put my hand on a pretty girls’s knee” and the women sing “pretty boy’s knee” and then they switch for the next chorus so they’re all bisexual. In general, a lot of fun if you like weird musicals and I mean really weird.
The full show is online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJSaEJm8pCE
Mean Girls
Yes there’s a musical of it. I was not looking forward to it when it was announced but have actually grown to quite like it. It’s hardly lyrical genius but the songs are fun and a lot of the problematic aspects of the film have been fixed. Damian is more explicitly gay in the musical and sings about an ex boyfriend in one song. Janis is heavily implied to be a lesbian (confirmed by actress offstage) and she doesn’t end up with Kevin Gnapoor. She is played by a queer actress in the tour cast. Both queer characters are much bigger roles than in the movie and get several songs each. I’d consider the musical to be quite white feminist but it does address issues such as the sexualisation of teenage girls and the notion that to be ‘sexy’ is ‘empowering’.
Here’s a clip of one of Damian’s songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-zM6QKkxEQ
& Juliet
An English jukebox musical about what might have happened to Juliet in Romeo and Juliet if she had not died at the end. I haven’t seen it but I’ve listened to the soundtrack and it is mainly comprised of 21st century songs by women. One of Juliet’s best friends is non binary although is played by a cis man as far as we know. Also I went to the same school as one of the actors which is a bonus for me. Very diverse cast.
Here’s a trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dm2k9nS3o20
In Transit
A capella musical about several people’s adventures on New York public transport. Two of the main characters in this ensemble cast are an interracial gay couple where both are pocs. They are engaged but one of them is having trouble coming out to his mother. I found it refreshing in that his fiance for the most part was not upset with him at his struggles in coming out and they were both able to live fulfilling lives despite this. I am always astonished by the talent of a cappella singers.
Here’s a trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhvik6qoass  Another one where the bootleg can be found very easily on YouTube
Firebringer
Remember A Very Potter Musical? Well, the company that did that are still putting out new pieces of theatre on their YouTube channel. In 2016, they put out their ridiculous comedy musical Firebringer, about a group of bisexual cavewomen. I won’t spoil the ending but trust me, it’s great. You may know it from the viral clip of one of the main characters singing ‘I don’t really wanna do the work today.’
You can watch the full musical here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmVuNlu0LCk
Special Mentions
Company
Musical by Stephen Sondheim about a man unable to commit to a relationship, surrounded by his friends who are all in couples. However, the award-winning 2018 West End revival chose to change the genders of some of the characters. The main character Robert became ‘Bobbie’ (although all of her love interests were gender-swapped as well). One of the originally M/F couples became an M/M couple. It opened on Broadway for about a week before the Covid outbreak so that will be one to look out for.
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtDK03y4gT0
In the Heights
A musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda about the Latin American community living in Washington Heights in New York. The original theatre production has no explicitly queer characters. However, in the upcoming movie version (that was meant to be released this summer but has been pushed back to next summer) it has been confirmed that the characters of Daniela and Carla (Daphne Rubin-Vega and Stephanie Beatriz) will be explicitly a couple.
I absolutely love this musical and the trailer for the movie looks beautiful check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0CL-ZSuCrQ
i love your regis content. part of why i fell in love with him is because he was a mature adult who had the mature adult opinion of "i can have sex with any other consenting adult, and it's not bad, it's fun and it feels good" and that was that. but after i formed that opinion i came to tumblr and found sex being one of the only parts of people's perceptions of regis and idk that seemed very off to me. pt.1
like we should appreciate that regis enjoys sex for what it is, but that is a factor in his more complex character, which ultimately centres on him being very controlled, patient, and mature. zeroing in on the sexual aspect ignores everything else and overrides sapkowski's creation of regis as the opposite of the vampire trope. i have rambled and i realize that, so anyways thank you for your opinions and how well you put all these complex character issues into words. pt. 2/2
yes!! i feel that the larger aspects of his character is what needs to be focused on... his backstory of redemption, his epitomizing humanity... i am not against regis having sex, it’s just not something that i am going to devote my time to because 1) kinda squicks me out as he’s this special type of comfort character that i’d like to see more in familial situations 2) just as real people do not have their entire lives revolve around being in sexual situations, fictional characters shouldn’t be treated like their entire purpose or all that they are capable of is to be in sexual situations. that just makes me fel like people are focusing on that for their own self-indulgence and have no issue with disrespecting the original messages of the character just so they can make p*rn, lol. it’s like... please learn to interact with media in a non-sexual way, in addition to whatever sexual way you’d like to interact with it if that sexual way is so important to you
i am certain that at least the main and side fictional characters in the witcher were meant to carry certain messages and themes in the narrative, and i feel like these should be respected not because of some great worship of the author, but because they’re good messages from a good story that can help us understand the world and humanity a little better. i feel like it was really helpful for sapkowski to create the vampires as a metaphor for alcoholism, it allows the audience to critically engage with the topic without becoming engulfed in the heaviness of real life. but also regis just has this super complex character that extends beyond being a metaphor and just being a good character in the context of the fictional world he lives in and the other characters he interacts with, and this character doesn’t deserve to just be ignored in favor of simple sexualization.
as you said, “zeroing in on the sexual aspect ignores everything else,” like if fans can ONLY make p*rn of regis or think about him in a sexual context, then that’s not a very healthy relationship to have with the media you consume, and it’s not respectful to other fans who would like to engage in non-sexual contexts because the p*rn begins to dominate all conversations and discussion about him as a character, and this makes it difficult for fans who do not want to see p*rn out of simple preference or because they are minors or sex-repulsed, in which cases this becomes even more of an issue.
but yeah like i just... okay for example, i watch what we do in the shadows (sometimes i’ve posted about it) and it’s a show that also plays with a bunch of vampire tropes and fiction, but it moreso leans into them and explores them that way instead of inverting everything like in the witcher. anyhow i started thinking about how the vampires in wwdits (because they function like the widely accepted tropes of vampires) were once human and had human lives and then became vampires and lost their humanity ... and then i was thinking about how regis, in opposition to this trope, actually never had humanity to lose in the first place. he was never trying to regain anything, because vampires in the witcher are just an entirely separate species. he had no obligation or regret to drive him to act like the ‘epitome of humanity,’ but he did so ANYWAYS because he just wanted to... he wanted to be a good person...
and personally i love to just see the hansa as a family, As Most May Already Know, so there’s this whole idea that regis had developed this humanity but moreso in a nature of principle and philosophy, and not really had any personal ties to it, until he joins the hansa and then he develops these personal bonds with everyone and also mentors angouleme and THAT’S what makes him human in the end, because he actually applied action to his theory, which is a very difficult thing for him as a character (if you compare him and milva as characters, in my interpretation they are like balanced opposites, in that regis symbolizes thought and theory, milva symbolizes body and action). he has difficulty putting practice to theory but in the hansa he actually does this even though it’s a challenge and thus he fulfills his arc of humanity.
also, thank you for saying you like my regis content, im flattered and glad you enjoy!! ;w; thank you for rambling, i appreciate the thoughts
