What is Tallit?
Tumblr media
Tallit, a prayer shawl, is derived from the same root as Talmud. Tallit means to "bring me the Dew at the right time", Talmud, "the very best Dew, the Highest, the Most Extreme."
Tal=טל dew
Lit=לי to me, for myself, make me dewy
Tallith=לעת when, while, at the time
Tal=טל dew
Mud=מאד, very extremely, highly
One would cover during prayers, Davening, study of the Torah in order to seek the refuge of Adonai and realize the Shema and also the Rena and the Siddhur.
Just as a forest cools down during the night and the moisture in the air becomes dew that saturates everything on the way down as the heat is released, so does a Tallit symbolize the condensation of the Words of Moses, the Water of Freedom into a direct experience of one's Jewishness.
To use a Tallit is to go beyond focus, it is focus on a particular thing, one that can only be found by invoking Adonai, the One Who Houses Us. Without homate to Adonai, there is no Ha Shem.
So to pray the Tallit is to pray for the black pillar of fear of being Jewish to lift, allowing the dew of the Jewish Self to soak through the Tallith. After the Tallit lifts, the Jew comes out into the light.
