Mother's Day
Tumblr media
Charles Kaufman’s original 1980 MOTHER’S DAY was a hot mess, but it had its moments, including some funny takes on consumerism and a bang-up finale in which two of the young career women kidnapped by a deranged Southern family get their revenge. Darren Lynn Bousman’s loose remake, MOTHER’S DAY (2010, Netflix DVD), has a more consistent tone. Unfortunately, it’s consistently lousy. In place of the original’s city-country conflict and rape-revenge plot, it’s now a home invasion tale with a hint of class struggle. Three brothers on the run after one is injured in a bank robbery head to their mother’s home, not realizing she’s lost it in a foreclosure.  They end up holding the new owners and their party guests hostage as Mother (Rebecca De Mornay) tries to figure out how best to handle their escape. Maybe having seen the original was a disadvantage. I could spot a few echoes of it, especially toward the end, but I kept waiting for the hostages to fight back. Scott Milam’s script even sets that up, but he doesn’t deliver. Instead of coming home to roost, the chickens fly off, which is rather smart of them under the circumstances. Shawn Ashmore, as a doctor held hostage, and Debra Ann Woll, as the criminal family’s sole daughter, have some nice moments. They even have a scene that suggests he’s getting through to her. But it leads nowhere. Poor De Mornay is saddled with Bousman’s attempt to make the story grittier. She mouths platitudes, much as Beatrice Pons had in the original, but there’s no satiric zip to it. She’s relentlessly normal and grounded but in the wrong way. The character just falls flat. All you get instead is a lot of sadism, the film’s failed attempt to capture some kind of stylish nihilism. The original was at times like a high-school kid shouting swear words to seem edgy and cool. This is like a high-school kid pretending to be an existentialist with no idea what that means.

SUMMARY: A deaf and mute writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window.
As a naturally very anxious person who sometimes struggle with her hearing, this movie got under the mod’s skin in a very real way. It’s very unnerving.

THE COLLECTOR (2009)
Tumblr media
My thirst for Asa Emory is eternal. This movie has been one of my comfort films for a couple of years, and every time I re watch it, I fall back in love with its unique story and intense setting. I like describing this film as Kevin McAllister from Home Alone, watched too many Saw films, and got inspired. Only instead of defending his own house, he instead comes to yours and fucks shit up there instead. The gore in this film is intense and graphic and not for the faint-hearted. The setting is beautiful. The killer is yummy. This film truly has it all

Because you let me // Because you were home
Speak No Evil (2022) // The Strangers (2008)
Speak No Evil (2022) is a slow burn Danish horror film that, although the most chilling line from the final act invokes the senseless violence of The Strangers (2008), pairs nicely with Haneke’s Funny Games (1997 or 2007, take your pick, although I prefer ‘97). This film speaks to the uncomfortable truth of how willing most people are to let their boundaries be crossed (yes most—even you, no matter how frustrating you find these characters…), how complacent we can be in our own discomfort, and begs the question of what line needs to be crossed for you to finally say that something is wrong…
