The default advice for people trying to get into IT is to get certifications and make a homelab but this if your resume gets seen by a human and it’s seen by the IT manager and not some hr rep or recruiter
TLDR: getting an entry level IT job is impossible and advice online is just get one more certification bro just one more just one more and you will get that $16 an hour job also please spend $300 setting up a server to store movies and control the rgb lights in your room I guess. (To be fair this can be done for “free” if you have an old laptop or enough parts to build something. The price is if you want it in a little box that sits next to the tv)
Anyway I do not see the point of having a homelab other than doing it for experience
IoT devices? Absolutely not. Nothing that isn’t a phone, console, tv, or pc should ever have an internet connection. And the tv is pushing it tbh. Why can your fridge receive updates? What’s wrong with you.
File storage? Ok yes but this only makes sense if you’re a data hoarder or some kind of content creator. If you don’t have a tiny ass pc, most cases will allow for at least 2 hdds.
Media server? I mean. This one is just me personally, I don’t watch movies or tv. The few times I do I just stream it for free.
What’s left? Virtual machines? How many do you actually need? I have a single Linux vm that I use for some class work/learning. It’s not running all the time.

Day 3 of being a Twitter Refugee!
I... Haven't done much today. Ate some hot dogs because my mom made them. I also loaded more music onto my homemade Plex Server ❤️
I have 2 8tb drives running in mirror mode! A 240gb boot drive, and a 240gb app/jail pool. It's using an i3-13100 (was on sale for regular model) and has 16gb of RAM.
This is all I have loaded on it. I have more content, but I'll care about that content later.
I'm also selling stuff to my friends so I can outfit the server with a better network card. I'm very new to home labs so I might use Tumblr as my big thinking ground for them?
Oh yeah this is a little sneak peek at my music it's mostly anime/video game music, I need new music to listen to...

Another attack, another change of plans
Day 179 - May 2nd, 12.024
So I almost had an anxiety attack today due to programming and my current plans besides "The System". "The System" is dead.
I started this project of automating my social media around 1 to 2 months ago, counting pretty much from the days I started my homelab, and it seems to be falling apart. In summary, the whole idea was to use scripts on the server/homelab, or nowadays, my computer, to post Twitter, Mastodon, Tumblr posts based on these daily blogs, however things started to crack this week. Yesterday I realized that AI is simply not feasible to create posts, running locally is impossible due to the computing power needed, and the [free] options that I have aren't good or give satisfying results. But I tried to then just, I don't know, use scripts for posting from Obsidian, manually really, and neither of it worked, handling authentication without a proper server is too much, and things like attachments need a lot of work to get done. So I give up.
When I started to realize this today, I have to admit that I started to feel an anxiety attack, and probably if it wasn't therapy, I probably would have gone down spiral into a full stop and just gave up on everything. Just imaging passing two months doing something which you believe can change your chances of getting a job, working every fucking day, dreaming of having somewhere to work so you can afford to see the person that you love, right after your family went through times which it could break everything apart, and this something simply doesn't work. And now almost half a year already passed and I can even put this project on my resume. I started to lose hope.
Thankfully, therapy really helped me come back somewhat fast from these attacks, and right when I started feeling it, I started to whisper to myself that everything would be okay and trying to create another plan. I almost felt like someone crazy for talking to myself and calming me down while I could stop breathing rapidly, but it worked. Everything will be okay Gustavo… You will be successful… You will be successful…
Now the plan is to just post manually for now, and focus on a project which is monetizable and something that I can show people easily. Not only that, but it is a project that I'm wanting to make for years, and have been wanting and preparing to do, instead of just doing it and learning and figuring out what I need on the way. It will consume some months of my life, but hopefully it will all pay out. And if it doesn't, at least I have a new tool to I use to help my own life and career.
And, even if I feel like I wasted months of my life, this month in specific, I learned Rust, I learned something new, and I created the prototype of another future project, so yea, at least it wasn't all for waste.

do you use linux. how & why
I do! While I do use Windows 10 for my desktop since I game a lot and play with a lot of old software so its bit of a requirement, I use linux on pretty much everything else I can. I even run it in VMs on my desktop on a fairly frequent basis to do things windows simply cant. As for the how using linux is pretty easy once you manage to learn how to use a CLI since even if you have a GUI you'll still be interfacing with it a lot. I prefer debain based distros since thats what I learned linux with and my current distro of choice is MXLinux, though I havent had a chance to use it much since I switched to it so I might change back to stock Debain. As for the why of it I simply love Open Source software as well as loving the amount of freedom it gives you, also its better for things like running servers and honestly once you get used to using a CLI you can get a lot faster with doing things in your OS. Its very fun to tinker and to do things on it as well so its a great hobby thing, its also a great way to breath some new live into an old laptop so I definitely recommend doing that at some point. I plan to run a homelab on some old hardware I have to do things like have a FTP server, host my own website and Gmod server, and do a veriety of other fun things on it which will all be accomplished with linux and a bunch of VMs. Thank you for the ask!
