I hesitated about sharing this one... I'm a huge fan of vintage early readers, as many of you know, which always seem so much better than the current licenced junk. And in that regard, "Uncle Elephant" (1981) by beloved author/Illustrator Arnold Lobel, is a beautiful example. But the book starts off with the young elephant's parents being lost at sea, and it seemed like it might upset some little ones. I am happy to report, however, that there is a happy ending (of which you can reassure young readers), and between start and finish, plenty of sweet, gentle lessons about dealing with sadness and learning to cope with difficult situations. What we’re reading Wednesday 📚 . . We took a break over the holiday and ate slowly reuplpadimh to our regular schedule (adding about 2 things a day til we get to our groove before the break). . . We just finished Odd and the Frost Giants as our morning family read aloud which became a bed time read aloud during the break. We’re bank to reading after breakfast and ate getting ready to start #wishtree by #katherineapplegate as part of our #buildyourlibrarylevel2 things. . . M has been reading #101awesomewomen who changed the world by #Julia Adams 🖤. I really wish I had a book like this when I was growing up! We’re on chapter 2 #womenscientists #womeninventors and I’m walking away so empowered + inspired too 🌟. Many of these women I don’t know about either and M is really loving seeing how strong girls are and how much they’ve contributed (even in the face of adversity, and #learningchallenges ). She’s become so much more motivated to continue her reading path and work hard at her own pace (#capd #dyslexia can really take a toll on a child’s self esteem but this book is really lighting up a Fire to #nevergiveup 🔥). . . I’m so grateful for it. I picked it up at #5below and reminds me of the rebel girls series. I’m planning to pick those up next at some point. This book is 4 chapters divided up by field. . . E to my surprise reread The Sign of the Beaver with Dad (!). He’s my reluctant reader fam so you know how big this is. Us too Louie, us too 🕊🖤. . . We’re finishing up #trumpetoftheswan today by #ebwhite . I’ve never read this one and so not surprisingly - it’s touched me so so much! In this quote he’s responding to the decision of whether or not to remain in the Philly zoo or return to the uncertain but free, explorative, rich life of a wild swan (even if it’s not free if it’s risks and dangers..). I resonated with this so much because #homeschooling (and things like starting a business, breaking away from conventional forms of spirituality etc) have required that same spirit of wanting to experience freedom and life by our own terms. . . One of the biggest frustrations I hear from parents these days is about the dearth of really great levelled readers. Either the quality is lousy, all licensed, cartoon-based drivel, or they're not properly designed to appropriate reading levels, with vocabulary that is far too simple or challenging for genuinely newly emergent readers. This is where older can be HUGELY useful. Not only do kids still love the timeless stories by Arnold Lobel and other older authors and illustrators, but they were written at a time when the creation of levelled readers was taken very seriously, adhering to careful standards to ensure that early readers could read these stories with a minimum of intervention and support. One of my favourites is "Days With Frog and Toad" (1979), whose short stories cover everything from celebrating a birthday to flying kites to a "scary story" (but not too scary). We are loving the book #idab by #katherinehannigan its written in a different style compared to Trumpet of the Swan (our last book), which took some getting used to for the first few chapters. However, to my surprise the kids have been yelling “one more chpt!” for almost every sitting so far. It’s one of those books you just can’t put down! 🌟 . . This quote right here spoke to my mama heart so much too when I read it.. I think so many children wish we understood this - when they’re so desperately trying to tell us something or interject their own commentary among adults.. Sadly it seldom gets understood this way. A few years ago my babes got into the habit of holding my hand if they had to tell me something but nowadays it’s less common and they just whisper in my ear what they want to say, or patiently wait (these are one of those things that start manifesting as they get older). Either way this is a great reminder for me that most of the time what my kids have to say trumps whatever the feelings or perceptions are - of the adult I’m chatting with has. 🖤 . . The book is really also showing my babes one of the reasons why we loosely do things like math, reading, writing in a relaxed yet rhythmic way vs. radically unschooling..we take things year by year and always consider unknowns like the ones Ida’s family is traversing (such a difficult season). It’s also re-connecting us to all of the reasons why we love #homeschooling and what a privilege, freedom, and advantage it is 🦋🌲. . . It’s a beautiful #homeschoolfamly book and a tear jerker for sure so if you haven’t read it yet, please do!
