Since the accident, Beomgyu was bound to lose a certain faction of his memory every year following, at exactly 5:53am on 13th March – his birthday.  In fact, the circumstances of his condition were quite peculiar. The thing is, after his recovery, Beomgyu still lived and continued on with his regular, day-to-day life. He still retained all the memories from his childhood and adolescence perfectly, and even up to current times and moving forward as a band member of a small, but rising indie group.  However, there were certain bits and pieces of his memories that were permanently erased from his subconscious, all being noticeably newer experiences and were later introduced in his life. For instance, there was a small, yet homey cafe that had opened near their studio six months before the accident.  Hueningkai was the one who introduced him to it, randomly finding about the place whilst scrolling through his social media feed. He begged Beomgyu and his older brothers to visit the eatery some day after practice. Surprisingly, it ended up being one of Beomgyu’s favourite places to go to after their sessions – after all, it was home to his favourite strawberry shortcake. So every year for the past four years, when either one of his band-mates would take him there following his birthday, it would always be as though it had been his first time – Beomgyu would exit the cafe with a big satisfied smile on his face, declaring that this would be his “new favourite cafe”, only for him to forget about it completely the consecutive year.  There were also other small, trivial things that he’d be bound to forget – like a number of notebooks that he had scribbled random song-lyrics on (that were surely now misplaced), some clothes and accessories he bought, and even some of the recent home decor he had in the apartment that he shared with Yeonjun.   So, it came as an absolutely cruel and twisted turn of events when Beomgyu ended up forgetting everything about you.

2023 Year End List - #17

17. Chaos For The Fly - Grian Chatten

Main genres: Indie Folk

A decent sampling of: Chamber Pop, Folk Rock

Grian Chatten is better known as lead singer of the Irish modern goth rock band Fontaines D.C., a group that's made significant waves in the British Isles ever since they came on to the indie/alternative scene.

Last year’s Skinty Fia appeared in a lot of publications' year end lists and only just barely got snubbed from my own by the #15 record I ended up going for, though it easily could’ve ended up anywhere between 15-13 since most of the stuff on the lower end of my lists are usually interchangeable in ranking. And frankly, I think I’ve probably since ended up spinning that one more times than Honeybee Table at The Butterfly Feast. The last two tracks "I Love You" and "Nabokov" were both particularly brilliant. But I digress.

Grian Chatten's natural charm as a figure in the world of indie music is hard to ignore. He's a brooding poet with a voice that is deep, homey, and rich, singing in an accent every bit as heavy as his regular talking voice. He embodies much of the same mythical cool factor and sensibilities of early 90s indie titans from the isles like The Stone Roses and My Bloody Valentine.

Likewise, the charisma is certainly there for him to venture out successfully as a solo artist, not to mention his strengths as a lyricist.

And this latest album is proof of concept. With his debut solo record Chaos For The Fly, Chatten paints new nocturnal worlds out of rickety old-timey and pastoral aesthetics, with a fair dose of cynicism and grim melancholy. He doesn't so much reinvent himself as a soloist, but rather takes elements of what already worked with his post-punk/goth rock band and distills them into a more intimate and folksy, singer/songwriter sound that retains some of his gothic roots.

I'm actually reminded a lot of folksier PJ Harvey records like White Chalk, Let England Shake, as well as this year’s I Inside The Old Year Dying which frankly, as a long time PJ fan, I fell this record outdid considerably. So props to him.

"The Score" was an excellent choice to ease in to the album's atmosphere, as the song ensnares listeners to a state of rest with an oddly seductive but wholly suspenseful folk guitar serenade. Chatten's whispers are gentle but firm and arresting, manifesting love as a contradictory force of benevolence and implied doom, all the while the plucking of the melody bends and resists resolution. Lots of subtle dualities happening here, which I'm a big fan of.

I knew that “Fairlies” was going to be one of my top tracks of the year the very moment I heard the chorus for the first time. It's a colourful feast for the ears; a fiery folk rock frenzy with all the mystique of a morbid fairytale, like a story of a werewolf hermit who bemoans and curses all of humanity. The whole piece feels like it should be accompanied by a really twisted old-fashioned wooden puppet show that combusts into dancing flames during the grand finale. That screeching fiddle towards the end in particular does everything it needs to in order to make this one hell of a memorable trip. A real stroke of genius.

"East Coast Bed" is a mild departure sonically, opting for a brighter, breezy sound still laced with melancholy and based heavily around a steady beat accompanied by warm chamber instruments, a flowery synth line, and a slight warbly dulcimer (or perhaps a sitar?). Fitting to its name, I feel as though I could lay back and start to float endlessly on the gusts of an oceanic wind.

The tender "Salt Throwers off a Truck" is the most traditionally 'folk' in composition piece on the album. This track really showcases Chatten's ability to conjure images that are deeply romantic and familiar yet forlorn. Not much else to say on this one - it speaks for itself. Makes me want to grab a pint and think about my life 10 years ago.

My one gripe with this album is "All Of The People", a somewhat under-cooked, spitefully misanthropic piano ballad. While it thematically fits within the record's general cynicism and poetics, the delivery in the lyrics is much too on the nose and (dare I say) almost banal, at least in comparison to what Chatten regularly demonstrates he's capable of. It ends up feeling really out of pace and disturbs the record's flow. I would've omitted this from the final version and relegated it to a bonus track. Hell, this LP probably would've made it a lot higher on my list if not for this hiccup.

But aside from the one considerable bump in the road, Chaos For The Fly was a standout project in 2023 for its clever songwriting and setting great atmosphere, and I for one am very excited for Grian Chatten to continue making solo projects. I would love to see an even more ambitious project in a similar vein to to this record. As it stands now, the man's already got me seeing will-o'-the-wisps over here whenever I listen to this bad boy at night.

So definitely check this one out, especially if Halloween-y is really your vibe.

ah man! i'm not sure what specific OCs would listen to (especially bc if i were to go down the line, between 26 different OCs we'd be here for eons) BUT i can elaborate more on my series-specific playlists since I have those nice neat and tidy haha!

My Pupet/stitch in the ditch inspo playlist is a lot of indie folk, namely Fleet Foxes, Mumford and Sons, Fruit Bats, Of Monsters and Men, Florence + the Machine, etc. Basically trying to hit homey, warm, rustic vibes.

Transient is more alt pop, a good chunk of it is Broken Bells, Two Door Cinema Club, Saint Motel, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, for more of an upbeat, electric modern spacey vibe with underlying notes of clinical depression lmao

Alliacea is like. 90% young the giant. like man i dont know what to tell you that band just got the vibes in one.

Delta is similarly a bit of a band monolith again with portugal the man (one of my favorite bands!). they just hit a really good chord about being A Lonely Evil Little Bitch which is Rem's energy to a tee

Like if you asked him to handwrite something and then read it a month later, he probably wouldn't be able to :P 2: He doesn't actually have a hairbrush or a comb and it drives some of his friends up the wall. He has perpetual bedhead and when he takes a shower he just shakes his head like a dog before drying off 3: Ward can't swim and he refuses to admit it, he just claims he doesn't go swimming bc fish and people pee in the water

💤 SLEEPING SIGN — is your oc a light sleeper or a heavy sleeper? how are their sleeping habits? he's a A literal nightmare to get to sleep when regressed, which is lowkey funny bc when he's not regressed, Ward can and will fall asleep most places easily. He's a pretty heavy sleeper, but a major night owl, and needs noise to fall asleep! (he usually just puts on recorded weather documentaries or those rain playlists. nerd)

He generally defaults to whatever his friends are eating and whatever vegetable is forced upon him, otherwise he defaults to quick and easy to eat finger food! He's not overly picky, but he's not a huge fan of like. non-deli meat meats. Like he'll eat turkey sandwiches and stuff but porkchops or steak? Not usually a fan. Beef stew tho, he will decimate a bowl of good beef stew with bread.

Juno Rucker Shares Guitar-Laden New Single "Pretty People" via EveryDejaVu Records

Emerging Las Vegas-based artist Juno Rucker has just released his compelling new single "Pretty People." The soulful guitar-laden track is the first release taken from his highly-anticipated debut album, Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid, due out on June 16th via EveryDejaVu Records. Bad Bad Hats - It Hurts (10th Anniversary Edition)

as the title suggests, this album is a remaster of the 2013 ep It Hurts! on this play, Bad Bad Hats present both the new remasters of the original ep, as well as featuring demo versions of the tracks! it's a really nice indie rock album, with a heavy emphasis on acoustic sound which makes it feel really homey imo. i personally prefer the remasters to the demos GENERALLY, but i think there are particular standouts across both sets, including:

It Hurts (Remastered 2023)

being the title track of the album, you'd expect it to be great, and you're not gonna be disappointed! there's this great rhythm on what almost sounds like hooves? that crops up throughout the song and is just a little quirky! there's also a really fun vocal backing which almost sounds like kazoos at one point?? there's so much going on in this song and honestly i love it all!! it's just such a light-hearted and playful song!

9AM (Remastered 2023)

9AM is the track which is probably the ""most"" indie rock on the album. drum & guitars, which is a throughline for a lot of these songs, but there are more elements to the production here which just make it feel... bigger, almost? the lyrics act as a warning, telling you that the singer isn't the one for you, but that they can't help it. it's an interesting song, and probably the one i enjoyed the most on the album!

Super America (Demo)

probably the best of the demo tracks in my opinion, Super America (Demo) leans a lot into the acoustic-heavy aspect of this album as a whole. there's a specific guitar segment that gets repeated throughout the song as a hook which i really like. the lyrics are cute too! as expected for a song called Super America, there's something really American about them - i wish i could explain it better, but i just think it's endearing!

there's something super fascinating about hearing the remasters on this album before hearing the original demos - it's so cool to see how these songs developed over time! there isn't a song on this i didn't like, and if you're an indie rock fan i would highly recommend giving these songs a go!

I do feel like this era is all over the place lmao like the fashion is all over the place, the two music videos so far have been very different vibes, the cover is very soft indie and the music is very much not that, better homes and gardens as his only mag cover but then going on stern?

Yeah, I guess the inconsistency is what bothers me. Like I almost feel like there are two versions of this album and its promo, if that makes sense, and most things he’s done or worn fits in only one of the two categories.

It’s not that I dislike the circus vibes or the flashy colors or whatever, but I guess I wish that he’d just stuck to the homey stuff for this particular era. Particularly because of how it was talked about initially and how it related to the pandemic. I think it would’ve been so lovely to actually have a soft, gentle era for Harry and then for the next era, he could go right back into the flashy, over-the-top, circus stuff. It does feel a bit all over the place and like I’m getting whiplash.

Having an age gap was never something that put a large damper on their relationship. The conflicting personalities of the two balanced out quite nicely, and the similarities that drew the two of them together in the first place (apart from the aforementioned) made sure they never had a lack of interesting things to talk about that weren’t generational.

Until TikTok, that was.

Now of course, there were some other millennials on the application, but Ben just for some reason couldn’t get it.

“Yes, I know that, babe, but why do they do dances?”

“They lip sync too!”

“But what is the point?”

And that’s how the conversation would end. Every single time. So Ben would sit on the sofa, watching as she danced about in front of the small screen, occasionally playing some cruel (ok, that’s a large exaggeration, they’re somewhat mean, at best) joke on him, claiming it was a trend on TikTok? That just did not sit right with him.

He didn’t remember hearing “mean pranks” in the initial description of the app when she had described it to him all of those times.

Ben tried to tune it out, he really did. He would wear his headphones, blasting Zeppelin as loud as he could while reading scripts or a book. But somehow, those catchy little tunes always managed to worm their way into his ear, being stuck in there for days and days on end.

He would waltz around the house humming Megan Thee Stallion, the occasional Flo Milli or underground indie artist also making an appearance often.

He was pouring a cup of coffee for himself one Tuesday morning in the kitchen before going on a run, Y/n watching fondly from afar. Rain was softly rolling down the windows, barely coming to a cease. The air was chilly, and fog floated through the early morning sky, a sense of calm washing over their shared South London home.

The room was kept somewhat warm, though, from the fireplace that she had insisted the house had to have, which Ben ended up being grateful for on more than one occasion. He looked over his shoulder briefly, smiling at the sight of his beloved wrapped up in his seafoam jumper, watching him move about contently.

As he turned back to where he was working on filling the two mugs in front of him, he began to oh so quietly sing the lyrics to what sounded like a familiar tune off of the app. Watermelon Sugar, maybe?

“Ben? Baby?”

He turned, his eyes growing wide and his hands flying to his hips as he leaned against the countertop behind him.

“Mhhm, yeah, w-what’s up, babe?”

She couldn’t hold in her giggle at the sight of her boyfriend’s red face and disgruntled appearance, one of his hands now scratching casually at his gold locks.

“What’re you singin’, pretty boy?”

His blush only increased at the nickname, eliciting another laugh from his girl.

“Y’know, just somethin’ I heard on the radio the other day.”

She immediately recognized his lie, he refused to listen to the radio, only using either Bluetooth or the aux cord, his music taste too pretentious for mainstream stations. She didn’t mind, though, always finding it quite funny how much of a music snob he was.  

But rather than call him out, she only nodded and smirked, standing up and bringing her phone with her over to the windowsill where she usually filmed her TikToks, pulling Ben along with her.

He sipped from his mug, eyes slanted as she scrolled through something on her phone, various sounds emitting from the speaker.

A little smile showed up on her face when she (apparently) found what she was looking for, leaving her to set the phone down, allowing a video under the sound to play on repeat.

“Sweetheart, what’s going on?” He asked, ever so cautiously, taking a step towards her. She walked towards him, engulfing him in a hug which he (yet again) cautiously reciprocated.

“I am going to teach you a TikTok dance.”

He had to do a double take.

“Come again?”

She pulled on the elastic waistband of her sweats, grabbing Ben by the arm.

“Come on, I know you wanna. And if nothing else you’ll do it to make me happy.”

He rolled his eyes, slightly irritated at her confidence and that she was so incredibly correct, he would do mostly anything to put a smile on her face.

“Yeah, you’re right.” He grumbled, moving to stand next to her.

She clapped once in excitement, joy flooding her entire body. The music started up again, but this time, she began to dance along to it.

“Ok, so just try to do what I’m doing, alright?”

“No! Not alright, can I just stand here, I think I should just stand here-“

“Ben, it's literally not that hard, 8 year olds can do it!”

“Well, I’m an extremely confused 29 year old man, thank you very much!”

And that’s basically how the next 15 minutes went until she finally gave in, allowing Ben to stand behind her, occasionally doing a little move of sorts. The two were in a fit of giggles now, struggling to keep enough composure for long enough to get even one successful video.

“Benjamin Jones! This is the last one, okay?”

He put a hand on his stomach, both of the pair attempting to catch their breath.

“Yes, yes, right okay, got it, last one.”

The little timer button counted down, the sound echoing throughout the property. 

The music then started, and she could barely keep a straight face for the 15 seconds. Bored of the routine, but never of her, Ben decided he would grab her and throw her onto the sofa, as payback for all the “TikTok pranks” she would pull on him. He waited for the perfect time to strike (one where she wouldn’t hopefully be too infuriated), restlessly shifting from foot to foot.

Nearing the last few seconds, he made his move. He swooped forward, a high pitched shriek falling from her lips as he wrapped his strong arms around her waist, running and jumping onto the couch, crushing her. He rolled off quickly, and she moved to be on top of him, her hair wildly astray. She sat up, straddling his thighs with a bright smile plastered on her face.

“You little jerk.”

He only smiled boyishly in response, a lovesick gaze set in his eyes.

The song was still playing on repeat as she leaned down, positioning her hands on either side of his head in order to place her lips gently upon his.

“That’s your reward for putting up with me today, Jones.”

He scoffed, taking her by the shoulders and bringing her to his chest. She looked up from where she was now comfortably lying, meeting his homey emerald gaze, his eyes like sea glass that had washed up on white sands, waiting to be rediscovered.

“I feel as if I deserve something more for all of that.”

“Oh, do you?”

He hummed and nodded, closing his eyes. She reached up, placing another peck on his plump lips, before scurrying away to retrieve the phone. He sat up rather quickly at the sudden loss of her body weight, smiling at the sound of her laughter coming towards him.

“Ben, look, it turned out so well.” She managed to slip out before basically throwing him the phone. A grin erupted on his own face soon after, along with the hearty chuckles to match. 

He made some commentary on how wonderful it was, before handing her back the device. She moved so she was once more essentially laying on top of Ben, the screen in both of their views. 

After sharing a few more laughs over the video, she captioned it and posted it, throwing her phone to get lost in the couch cushions as the likes and comments began to roll in.

She looked up at him once more, and he met her gaze, as he always would, bringing a hand up to tuck a lock of hair behind her ear. 

It didn’t leave her cheek, resting there and lightly caressing her skin. The two were most serene then, almost appearing as two felines that had decided to nap during the morning showers, most comforted by each other and the steady sound of the droplets as they pattered.

He was whispering now, the rambunctious energy of the room fading into a much more tranquil and stolid vibe, wrapping the two up like a warm embrace.

“Y’know I really would do anything to make you happy, my love.”

She closed her eyes, taking hold of one of his hands.

He then heard her mutter something like “I know”, and all was well.

OH OH OH UHHHH !!!! GOSH I HAVE SO MANY!!! some these are gonna involve javid but whatever. also these are kind of ones that can be for any au but most SHOULD align a little bit with canon djfhskhfskjfd

ok this can go for any au but in my opinion david never ever thinks of himself as 'Davey' until after he meets jack

davey and katherine are best friends. like BEST friends. like ok they constant bitch about Jack and Sarah to each other but they are the only two in the group with brain cells so they stick together y'know ?? anyway we stan that friendship dynamic

davey is a polyglot- meaning he knows (and uses) several different languages at varying degrees of fluency! idk i love the thought of him knowing a whole bunch of languages (also, i totally didn't know this was a thing until i read 'On A Subway Platform' by @jewishdavidjacobs (which, by the way: i binged this so hard last week and can NOT get it out of ny head !! go read if you haven't yet!!))

i personally headcanon that davey has adhd?? i have no reasoning for this other than the fact that i have adhd and he just gives off The Vibe

davey has such a high reading level that it can intimidate some of the other boys, but rather than look down on them, he helps them with the basics and stuff (also i love the modern au HC of davey as a teacher bc oh shit YES i love that for him)

once you get to know him, davey is a little shit. like he's the one who pulls the best pranks bc 1) he has such an analytical mindset that he can pull off some really big things and 2) no one ever expects that it's him

okokok i love the portrayals of davey being nervous n anxious n stuff like that but i dont think that should be his entire personality?? so whenever i portray Davey (whether it be in fics or rps (hi, i also do one on one roleplays!)) i try to make him a bit more confident and outspoken because, truthfully, that's a lot of his act 2 character growth right there!!!

that being said, he does suffer a lot with mental health whenever i portray him- whether that be anxiety or depression or executive dysfunction or whatever.

he's the kind of person you can tell anything to. even if he doesn't have the stability or strength to help at that moment, he will always come back and check up on you no matter what.

very level headed and able to think fast on his feet- which is very helpful when it comes to damage control with the boys or coming up with an elaborate story on the fly to sell papes (bc let's face it, he learns to lie a little to make that money)

MODERN AU: i can see Davey liking soft coffee shop music, musical theater soundtracks, and like. idk. certain tiktok songs (the only songs that come to mind at the moment are 'Backyard Boy - Claire Rosinkranz' and 'Heather - Conan Gray')

MODERN AU: he bikes everywhere. like. everywhere. (and jack tries to teach him how to use a skateboard but they just end up biking/skating next to each other every day)

MODERN AU: don't ask why but y'know those indie movies that take place in the Pacific Northwest where there's a bunch of trees and everything is just small and homey and everyone knows everyone and there's that one scene where the protagonist needs to just Get Away From It All and just goes and runs down the middle of the street under the moonlight just to feel something and Finally Let Go ??? davey is constantly searching for That Moment to have for his own (even tho he lives on the other side of the country)

song recommendation of the day: Caroline, Please Kill Me by Coma Cinema

“Caroline, please kill me,” said my spirit to your mind / I will hang out on your feelings until the end of time

Sole band member Matt Cothran (who is also behind the band Elvis Depressedly) does an incredible job creating an indie/alternative pop-rock song which is both very catchy and equally very blue. With the tiny budget and small access to equipment Cothran had in its production, the songs on his album “Blue Suicide” have a simple, slightly rough-around-the-edges and homey feel to them that makes the sound just that much more impactful.

If you like homemade downer pop songs that you can sing along to, this is the track (and the album) for you. I love listening to this song with headphones in a car ride through the town, or playing it on acoustic guitar (the chord progression is easy to pick up and a good place for beginners getting started on barre chords).

Shelf Life - Perfect Precious

Perfect Precious is a really sweet EP by Scotty Leitch, as part of his solo project Shelf Life. this EP is filled with a number of shorter, almost vignette-like indie rock/country songs, and it's super sweet! the songs feel super homey, like they're being played by a couple guys with guitars & drums on the couch next to you. it's a really intimate album, with lyrics that are tender - all of these songs are really really touching! there are a few i wanna highlight though:

Love It

Love It, to all intents and purposes, is a really adorable love song. it's got a simply guitar and drums backing, with lyrics that emphasise the beauty in small moments of love - little kisses, heart palpitations, and all that! it's super cute, and i think it's such a sweet track! i'm not much of a make-playlists-for-loved-ones person, but if i were, i'd 100% put this on a playlist for my boyfriend - it's so cuteeeeeeee!!!

Beautiful Buddy

again, another really cute song! Beautiful Buddy has a little bit more of a pronounced indie rock production, but the message is equally as sweet as in Love It. in this, Leitch talks about his "beautiful buddy", a guy who he misses and wants to spent all his time with. i don't wanna make any assumptions either way about Leitch, but as both a romantic and a platonic message the lyrics here are really sweet as well! it's another song that's just so full of love and it's really sweet.

North Mavor Ave

the final track on the album, North Mavor Ave has a very pronounced country-rock sound - little details like the banjo during the instrumentals really sells this, and Leitch's singing in particular just sounds a little more country in this! the lyrics, however, are just as emotional as the others - rather than being about love, it's a reflection on struggles of the past, the hard times Leitch's parents and family faced, and how they came to shape him. it's quite distinctive on this album, but a really moving piece and a really lovely way to round the tracklist out. i'm literally tearing up thinking about it 🥹

Leitch is a musician i hadn't come across today, and i had certainly never heard of Shelf Life before either. regardless, i think this EP - though being only 20 minutes long - has definitely been a really profound experience for me musically. Leitch's songwriting is masterful - these songs are just FULL of sweetness, rawness, and really tug at the heartstrings in all different ways! a fast favourite to me, and i could not recommend it more!

You know, it would be a really cute fic if someone wrote an AU with Rhett and Link confessing their love to each other through music. Like maybe Rhett singing a certain song to Link at a big event that tells him how he really feels, and Link joins in. Or something idk.

You know that in the new house they’d stay late more offen, making up little excuses to hang out an hour past closing time. Rhett would pack his office full of his guitars, all the fancy colorful guitars his family has bought for him and the studio has used for decoration, and he’d learn indie pop songs with simple chords and sit in the lounge and sing

and week by week the songs would get more and more homey, more loving. link would gravitate to the lounge and sit on the sofa with his legs crossed and his macbook open. then, he’d shut his macbook and lean on his knees and watch rhett sing these romantic mushy gushy songs from people he’d never heard of

and link could never sing along because the songs were always changing and nothing link knew, which meant rhett was choosing these obsure songs on purpose, and with nothing else to do, Link would begin to listen to the lyrics

and after a few months straight of obscure love songs, Link comes out right before rhett starts singing one afternoon and leans by him on the sofa kisses him square on the mouth and says “hey. i get the message, I love you too. can you start singing songs i know again? I miss harmonizing with you.”

There’s no other magical experience like listening to a new taylor album for the first time. It’s like being immersed in a whole new world. Idk does anyone else like just make themselves cosy in a little listening cave somewhere so you can really take it in?
