So I went to the wiki page for the henghill Bullet & Brain mission of 2.2 looking for some dialogue I had missed and

a) I found something incredibly tasty that slotted into some other thoughts I'd been having, more on that on another day, and

b) I saw this super fun little trivia at the bottom, which!

I knew Penacony characters like Boothill took a lot of inspirations from old movies, but I didn't realize it was even in his and Dan Heng's relationship, that's so cool!!

It fits them very well, it's such a fun reference. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" was an old buddy Western film (from 1969- nice) about a pair of outlaws. Butch Cassidy was the leader of a gang, and described as clever, affable, and talkative. Meanwhile, his closest companion, the Sundance Kid, was known as a man of few words.

Cassidy's original birth name was much more plain, but similar to Boothill, he took on a new moniker when he became an outlaw. "Cassidy" had been the last name of his beloved mentor, who taught him how to shoot and ride. And Sundance Kid was known as he was because Sundance was the name of his hometown, and it was the only place that had ever managed to catch and jail him, back when he'd been younger (also similar to Dan Heng, but ouch).

These two stick together like glue throughout the length of the film- through Cassidy's leadership of the gang being challenged, through a train robbery gone wrong, through being pursued by mercenaries, and even through fleeing to Bolivia and trying to start over together.

I don't want to say too much more, since the mission title is referencing one specific movie that I've never seen. I kinda wanna watch it now, though, just to see the inspiration that went into Boothill and Dan Heng and how they get along. I just think it's really sweet that these two were literally made to be the best of bros, how lovely is that. 💕

OH YM GOD THE FEAR I JUST FELT I was fighting Argenti in Gold and Gears and in his third phase he one shot my Argenti, Black Swan, and Luocha and I normally consider a battle lost once Luocha is down but I had Fu Xuan left and I was like okay MAYBE MAYBE I could still win this but didn't really believe it but LO AND BEHOLD she waited him out since I was running Nihility I actually managed to solo him with Fu Xuan. I cannot believe that worked it took like ten minutes but she DID IT I will never hear out any Fu Xuan slander I love her so much

⌗ Oh, how the tables have turned~ Instead of the usual gamer you and character Dan Heng, this time it's the other way around, with Dan Heng behind the screen and you as the newest character that developers have introduced to the game in the early version. 

⌗ I imagine Dan Heng plays Honkai Star Rail 24/7, so he knows every lore like the back of his hand. He must have a deeper understanding of the game mechanics and its attributes, creating a sense of career for this game. Like a cute nerd he is~

⌗ Not only is he a gamer, he's also a streamer. He streams moderately, sharing tips and tricks with his fellow gamers, but he is known to stream Honkai Star Rail contents. He enjoys engaging with his audience and discussing strategies, making him a valuable resource for the gaming community. 

⌗ He even streams with his fellow streamers, especially with Caelus. They often get labeled by the viewers as the chaotic duo due to their dynamic and entertaining banter during gameplay. 

⌗ Now, let's proceed to you~

⌗ With version 2.4 approaching, there was a leak of your character saying that you'd be one of the important figures of one of the Xianzhou Alliance, and everyone was suspecting that you'd either be one of the swordsmen or the arbiter-general, similarly to Jingyuan or Jingliu. 

⌗ Do you know the Silhouttes marketing drip that the HSR developers posted? There were eight of them⏤including you. Ever since the new March 7th drip marketing, everyone has been hyped for the following characters that are soon to be released. 

⌗ There are four characters hailing from the Yaoqing, others from the Zhuming, and March categorize in Luofu. One in particular that caught their attention is your silhouette banner, which illustrates your figure with your desired weapon in your grasp, bird crane origami surrounding you, and a subtle winged dragon shadow hovering in the background.

⌗ Meanwhile, Dan Heng, being one of the lore fanatics, has speculated that you may be one of the Vidyadhara species like Bailu⏤Correction. He's not just speculating; he's certain of his theory. Despite the lack of the draconic features in your character, you're somehow linked to the Vidyadhara race.

⌗ The developers dropped an animation where the five high elders of Vidyadhara are shown, and one of them bears a striking resemblance to your silhouetted character. This has sparked even more speculation from Dan Heng about your true identity and affiliation to the Vidyadhara race. 

⌗ Despite you're in a cameo, Dan Heng is captivated by your character design; it's aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The developers must increase their efforts to include more details about your character in future updates to satisfy the demands of players. 

⌗ Although he notices that you lack the draconic features present in the other high elders, this would mean that your hidden role must be disclosed in later updates. 

⌗ While streaming, Dan Heng nonchalantly talks about you and the design itself, even theorizing what unit you will be in the future and the most effective relics that would give you massive damage. 

⌗ Do you guys know those informative videos where content creators break down every aspect of a character's abilities, potential damage, which lightcone suits them, or what pieces of relics would give them a buff? Dan Heng is one of those, except he's quite immersive when it comes to you.

⌗ The audience quickly notices how passionate Dan Heng is, and they labeled him as a SIMP for you. He himself hasn't noticed how well absorbed he is into you, which is terrifying to say the least.

⌗ Imagine the day when the new patch was released and Xianzhou had added a recent interlude story mission, which somehow ties to you and other characters, and Dan Heng immediately logged in to the game with breakneck speed. 

⌗ Do you guys know that every time a new story is added to the game, there's the main cover of the chapter? Where are all the major characters going to be included in the story? Yeah⏤that's basically what Den Heng is seeing right now! There's a midnight-isque backdrop, and the characters are having a smile on their faces, enjoying whatever the heck they are doing. But that's not what Den Heng is focused on.

⌗ In the corner of the cover, there's a suspicious figure in a clay blue colored cloak that seems to be hanging around with several children who are all circling around the figure. Squinting his eyes, he sees a tuff of your hair out of the cloak. He's now certain that you'll be part of the story somehow. 

⌗ During the story, Dan Heng ( he's streaming the walkthrough ) secretly basks at every moment of your screen time; he screamed internally at your first appearance⏤or every time of your appearances; he would take a minute or so to glance at your expression and design every chance he gets. His fangirl moment. 

⌗ Your voice was pleasant to hear. The audience started to spam him with SIMP texts in the chats or even memes due to his not-so-subtle, flustered reactions. Overall, he enjoyed the mission story. Because you were in it.

⌗ Now, he's waiting for anyone who leaks your gameplay.⏤Who am I kidding…HE'S THE ONE WHO LEAKS YOUR GAMEPLAY AND IDLE ANIMATION. He may seem to be a reserved guy, but mentally, he's zealous. He enjoys and approves your gameplay and animation because they are appropriate to your character and your aesthetic. 

⌗ One of your idle animations consists of creating a bird crane origami and letting it fly away, watching it with awe. A unique feature of this is that for each bird crane origami you've created, different colors and patterns are displayed.

⌗ Another idle animation of yours is⏤since in your default form, you appeared to be human. Then clouds materialize and envelope your figure. With a burst of wind, it showed your Vidyadhara form. 

⌗ In your gameplay, however, before entering the battle, you were still in your default form. Following entering a battle, you've changed into your Vidyadhara form, draconic features and all. Similar mechanics with Firefly/SAM. Your author is biased when it comes to dragon-based characters. I'll let you imagine your basic attack, skills, and ult. 

⌗ Once your banner is dropped, oh boy…Dan Heng is going to E6 and S5 of you and your signature lightcone. AND HE FRICKING DID! Giving you the best relic and maximizing your talents. Every battle he encounters, he always wins, and hearing your triumphant voice line, he's proud of himself. This guy is fucking devoted y'all. If only I had money, then I could E6 Imbibitor Lunae. 

⌗ He subtly boasts you and your build to his viewers and his fellow streamers. Caelus lost his 50/50 in your banner and got Bailu instead, but at least it's also a Vidyadhara. Overall, Dan Heng adores your character and loves to see more of you in the future patches.

Imagine a SAGAU Dragon reader who has a whole private tea pot/Adeptus realm where they just exist in their full dragon form without bother. Then they hear one of their acolytes request to come in and think “might as well” and let’s them come in and they finally see Dragon Creator in their full glory.

Zhongli would be so ecstatic in my opinion, honestly. The funny thing is, Liyue will probably take the most pride for the fact that Reader is a dragon in the first place.

Heck, for all we know, people might start hailing Zhongli as the Reader's child. So, better get those adoption papers up and do so :)

Please teach him how to use his mora wisely, though. He's going to give you a constant heart attack if you don't.

⭒ no warnings... uh reader calls serval sev as a nickname, no use of y/n, minor/vague spoilers for the honkai star rail story line 

⭒ One moment she was there, the next she was gone, hailed as a hero for sacrifice. But what about the friend she left behind? Or I’m doing the Serval companion quest and let me just say the abandonment issues are strong in this girl, so this is my take on her dynamic with her partner (you <3)

Neverwinter is unusually quiet- save for the incessant ticking of decorative machinations. Cogs twisting against the laws of nature resonant in their grinding noise. However that is all, it’s off putting in nature really. Normally when you would finally trudge into the mechanical workshop in the late hours of the frigid night it would be accompanied by the strums of an eclectic guitar, along with an array of excited whispers and murmurs on lyric composal ideas. Tiredly stepping further into the workshop, you couldn’t help the frown tugging at your lips, a familiar blonde head of hair was slumped against the counter. Turned to the side, and was intensely focused on a rugged polaroid photo.

Hesitance held you back, was something wrong? Unless you had gotten dates mixed up Pela should be here for the ladies rock ‘n roll practice. Before you can attempt to get lost in your thoughts even further Serval sits up, and looks around her shop before her eyes land on you. The air stills for a moment, and you can’t help but feel your nerves act up, locking your still form into place. Electric blue eyes crinkle at the bottom as a relieved smile covers her features, instantly she’s bolting from behind the work table. Carefully avoiding tripping over random projects and wayward nuts and boots. Before gathering you solidly in her arms.

“You’re ok!” Her arms snake around your waist and her chin digs into the dip of your shoulder. The smell of oil and rust tickles your nose, and it takes all your willpower not to sneeze. Startling slightly, you return the gesture in a much more subdued manner compared to her, but she seems to appreciate the sentiment if the sigh of her relief is any indicator to go by.

Time stops as the warmth of Serval surrounds you, it’s overwhelming and positively overflowing, enough to combat the rugged cold of the eternal freeze of Belobog (in your humble opinion) and you relish in it. All too soon the embrace ends, and Serval proceeds to hover over you, calloused fingertips ghosting over the skin of your face. Before promptly cradling your cheeks, critically inspecting every ounce of your form.

“Sev…,” chiding lightly, you rest your dominant hand over one of her own, curling your fingers to rest on her palm. In a common display of stubbornness she ignores you in favor of squishing your face slightly.

“Are you alright? Lil bro, let me know about your group's fragmentum expedition, you’re not hurt are you?” Tittering over you, Serval still had yet to relax her grip. It wouldn’t do either of you good if she continued this bout of worry, so you rolled your eyes fondly.

“Relax Sev, the trip had zero encounters. I'm fine as can be… besides you know the captain would rather go against his orders than face your wrath,” the woman pauses slightly before laughing suspiciously. Taking a step back she suddenly began avoiding your gaze.

“Aha… so you know about that?”

“Mhm, I should be offended as a Silvermane Guard that you threatened my captain on not sending me out into dangerous turf, but I guess it was a rather endearing effort,” nonplussed you walk past her to lean against the work table she was previously behind, a teasing smile blossoming on your expression. Seeing you weren’t mad, Serval huffed out loud following in pursuit of your retreat, there’s a gentle smile dawning her curved lips and you can’t help but think it belongs there.

Neither of you spoke content to just coexist in silence, side by side. However it doesn’t take you long to notice the thin furrow of her brow, years of being together does that sometimes though. Makes you keenly attuned to your partner- and her to you of course. So you thread your fingers through hers the action most familiar, and idly trace a thumb over her knuckles. If she wanted to talk, you would listen, and if she didn’t, you would offer comfort.

“You’re tired aren’t you?” A subject change? Abstaining from pointing out the obvious, you instead lean against her humming in confirmation.

“Let’s get you to bed then,”

Nimble fingers trace indiscernible figures along your back: figure eights, lopsided hearts, and sometimes words of affirmation too. You seem to be teetering in between the brinks of consciousness and true REM. Warm breaths of air breeze against Serval's collar bone. The geomarrow heater hums in function, a warm orange glow emanating from its grated opening. It sputters slightly, she’ll have to tinker with it tomorrow… a sly smile takes over as she casts her gaze on your face. She could totally use it as an excuse to hold you closer although- you’d probably see through her schemes. It was a talent really, how often and how quickly you would figure it out. Nothing ever escaped your keen eyes when it came to the whims of herself, yet you know just when to back off. If today was any indication of the blissful understanding you regarded her with.

An old photo sits abandoned on a grainy table top, the corners of the image have long since faded away due to a bout of improper care of the delicate item. Even through wear and tear the three figures huddled in the middle of the frame are as clear as day. Serval is in the middle, lips pressed against your grinning cheeks, and her other arm hooked around a regal looking Cocolia. An innocuous photo- one that preserves the memory of good times.

It’s dumb really how caught Serval found herself, sitting and staring at that image willing the minutes by in a festering bout of worry. It’s unfair the thought bristles unbridled in her mind that she has already lost someone to that godforsaken stellaron…. She can’t lose you too. The thought is despondent, and it’s to her heavy sigh that she finally settles on something.

A meek whisper into the quietude of the darkened room, lips curving as the syllables of your name filtered through her voice. For a moment, she believes you to be asleep, but you groan out groggily in reply. Stirring and blinking slowly to adjust your sight, nose brushing against her chin you finally rasp out.

“Sev?” You are unable to make out her exact expression, but there isn’t really any time to dwindle on when she gathers your hands into her own, soft lips pressing gentle kisses on your fingertips. A brow raised in silent questioning, Serval finally speaks up her gaze piercing your own.

“I trust you, so I trust that you will be careful no matter what- that way you can always come back home to me,” the words come out small, so unlike the usual confident tone she uses when she speaks. Although miffed by her loaded question you don’t take long to answer.

“Of course Serval… I promise,” The blonde seemed to sigh in relief, shoulders shagging as she pressed her forehead against yours. When all is said and done, and the two of you are entwined once more atop the bed, Serval allows her fingers to trace up and down your arm. Before holding your hand firmly once more. She finds her mind blissfully empty and purely content. Comfortable in the presence of you, and the assurance that you would not disappear before her very eyes.
