SERIES 1-5 SPOILERS (sorry forgot to add this!)

Series 1 Jon was fairly consistent in how he’d say Martin, usually pronouncing the R and the T, the ‘professional/formal’ way (Gotta try and convince people you are in fact the head archivist) as well as the tone usually being a little harsher when he was making unprompted jabs at Martin. (Also side note, MAG 14 where he talks about Martin maybe getting chopped up, sounding far too happy about that prospect Jon). MAG 22 is where we actually get to hear Martin, after hearing nothing but slander from Jon. Obviously he’s making a statement for a traumatic event but there’s a clear difference in how they speak in terms of confidence with Jon and nervousness from Martin. (Also side note 2, I listened to mag22 again and I forgot how much Martin wanted to prove his experience was real to skeptic Jon, makes me a little sad) That edge is still there in Jon’s voice but it’s softened the tiniest amount at the end when he’s actually providing solutions to Martin (Hurt/Comfort described as work) Then we get to MAG 39 where they have a real conversation! There’s still that ‘professional’ tone from Jon but this is the first time he actually has some form of emotion that isn’t annoyance, instead it’s fear. Also the ghost conversation where it just feels like the roles have flipped, with Jon being the one who doesn’t understand and Martin making fun of him. (Side note 3 I still think one of the funniest moments in MAG 39 when Martin mentions he records poetry on the tapes because of the lofi charm and then there’s the solid few seconds of silence with only the fire alarm sound).

Series 2 is pretty much the same between the two of them, but occasionally we start to see a different side to Martin when he’s answering Jon back. Like the whole ‘accidentally stabbing yourself with the bread knife’ conversation, he answers him a little firmer (like you would to someone you care about deeply) and in MAG 56 when Martins confronted by a paranoid Jon he answers in a firmer way but it feels less like it’s out of care and more just out of trying to diffuse the situation. Series 3 is where things start to change a little, we get Martin clearly being pleased about people saying him and Jon were ‘close’ as well as Jon mentioning ‘office gossip’ where he sounds like he’s attempting to convince himself ‘it’s natural and normal’. (The denial was strong)

Series 4 is where the big changes come from the two of them, and to me it almost feels like a role switch between them. Jon becomes the one practically pining and Martin becomes the one to deny it. There’s Jon demanding to know what Elias did to Martin, the constant asking about him as well as Jon actively seeking Martin out several times. MAG 124 is the first conversation between the two of them in series 4, Jon sounds excited to talk but Martin just sounds flat (it gives series 1 vibes) and this same pattern of Jon’s tone changing while Martins stays flat is carried on throughout. We could derail everything and then just leave!’ To which he is met with Martin shutting it down with the harsh reality of the situation. Then we get the Mahtin’s (I can hear it, I don’t know how else to write it) and relief from the two of them as they leave the lonely together (I’m not crying) and everything ends in the cabin, nothing bad happens and they just live in Scotland with the cows

We’ve made it to series 5 where things are a little bit fucked! So let’s start at the beginning, Jon just sounds defeated, the thing he’s being trying to stop is everyone’s issue and he feels it’s his fault. Martins trying to sound reassuring and hopeful that things can be changed. Also there’s the various points where they sound almost happy despite the situation, ‘Eye spy literally everything’ ‘You are my reason. Just wanted to make you say it!’ And there’s warmth to the two of them, an oddly refreshing happiness that only comes in those short moments before everything’s awful again. (Side note 4, maybe I’ve got it a little wrong but Martin sounds less nervous in his voice, follows the character development of adapting and becoming a stronger character from dealing with everything) ‘You have to promise me, that your going to do everything in your power to live’ There’s a firmness in Martins voice but it sounds more like he’s either trying to convince himself that Jon would do that or he’s trying to convince Jon to do it. MAG 194 starts with the argument as the reality of it all is finally recognised. Martins clearly hurt by Jon claiming ‘it’s the only option’ resulting in him sounding more frustrated and almost like a petulant child. ‘Breaking his promise.’ ‘That’s not fair’ Jon just snaps at the accusation, despite it being partially true. This argument is similar to MAG 154 (to me at least) because of the pleading and convincing from Jon and the disagreement and bordering mocking from Martin. Jon was in an impossible decision and was attempting to justify his own sacrifice but Martin was mostly focused on the two of them living. ‘Tough! The world doesn’t care what you accept. It just is.’ Is Jons final attempts in the argument, he knows there is limited options and limited survival rates, it’s like he’s accepted the end of it all, then Jon does the statement, proceeds to make a joke of the lack of arguments given by it and says ‘I’m going to go and apologise to my boyfriend’ and there’s the brief smile in his voice again. Jump ahead a little to MAG 199 where we get the somewhat calm before the storm. And there’s a weird calmness to the two of them when they talk but there’s a mix of defeat and acceptance from Jon because he was always going to try and sacrifice himself, and then there’s defeat and hope from Martin because he knew Jon would try but clings to the hope that maybe everything will be okay. Ah onto MAG 200 the one that proceeds to hurt us all, again there’s the acceptance from Jon but also fear and determination to ‘win’ over the fears no matter what it costs him. Martins a mix of betrayal, anger, sadness, fear because well the promise was broken and he was going to be alone again. But it’s the final moments, there’s fear but they still cling to hope that they will be together no matter what happens.

N4g4 (she/they, pronounced Nah-gah/Naga) is a HORUS hacker (and more!) in my partner Steam's Lancer game! I love them to bits, even if she's uh. A bit mean sometimes. This was just done as a little lofi girl traceover/expansion for a personal mug that I actually own! The first time I got it made, the colors were actually too dull - this is the updated, brighter version. Really had to learn a lesson about how colors translate differently to being put on ceramic.

3. What work are you most proud of

Unspoken was hard. The idea was in my head since the beginning of summer when I was sick with COVID and feeling a certain type of way, and I'd slowly chipped away at it since. I have five more scenes that are partially or wholly finished for that one, but I ended up only posting one scene. That scene was something I wrote straight through, pretty late at night, with a ten hour loop of Temple of Time background music while it was storming outside. It was very much an everything aligning kind of moment, and while I wish I had been able to pull the rest of it together, I am very proud of how that one scene turned out.

20. Which work of yours have you reread the most

It's kind of random, but I go back to Woe a lot. It's pretty short, and doesn't have much plot besides "Time is sick and he will be resting for the day", but the solidarity of the group in really pronounced in that one. It's domestic but a couple steps to the right. Everyone gets along and works together so easily, but they're also definitely up for pranks and teasing.

27. What do you listen to while writing?

I've got a couple things! I've got a playlist on spotify that's some mixed lofi from Pokemon and Zelda. I also listen to, like, all of Rozen's Zelda covers. But sometimes I just put on the Hyrule Warriors OST, Pokemon Legends Arceus OST, or one of these Breath of the Wild Ambience videos. Whatever I'm feeling at the time, and whatever fits the vibe of what I'm writing.

29. Favorite line/passage written this year

hjfgshdgj it's a slightly longer passage so I'm putting it under the cut, but it's from Scraps & Thread, which is a Hyrule Warriors fic I wrote for my birthday this year <3

It was the ugliest scarf Link had ever seen.

At least, he assumed it was supposed to be a scarf. He slowly picked it up, confirming that it did in fact seem to be a scarf-shaped item. It was the only possible thing such an agglomeration of fabric could pass for, and even then it was stretching the definition. The thing barely held itself together. The scraps used to create it must have wanted to be blue, but the various shades were faded and dulled in comparison to the blue he wore around his neck. 

The needlework wasn’t much better. Each scrap was hand sewn together, and the quality of the stitching left Link praying whoever made it wouldn’t have to patch themselves up on the battlefield with a needle and thread. Despite being newly presented to him, the scarf was already fraying and unravelling in a few places. It was about as threadbare, pathetic, and ugly as a scarf could ever get.

Link laughed, the sheer absurdity of the gift requiring no other response. Luckily the others took it as a sign of approval and laughed along with him, offering each other high-fives and exchanged grins. Link tugged the blue silken scarf from around his neck, letting it pool in his lap as he attempted to maneuver the new scarf into a wearable state. It was much longer than the other one, and looping it around a few more times made him feel obnoxiously bundled up for sitting next to the fire, but he didn’t mind. 

One of the ends of the scarf felt different as he brushed his fingertips against it, and he glanced down. Embroidered on the last square were three letters. It was barely discernible, but LOZ was clearly the intention behind the extra stitching. His own initials, shakily declaring the scarf as his. 

The scarf was hideous. The workmanship was probably the worst Link had ever seen. The fabric scratched uncomfortably against his neck, and it was a downright tripping hazard to wear. It was a complete fashion disaster that no one would want to be caught dead wearing.

It was the most beautiful gift Link had ever received.

welcome to track deep dive number two! as voted on by my instagram followers, i'm gonna be talking about my first spotify release, nlsn! (here to settle the argument: it is, in fact, pronounced like "nelson". but i love hearing people try to pronounce it other ways)

man, i have so much to say about nlsn. it holds such a special place in my heart. i get asked to play it at parties a lot (usually by my sister), and for that minute and a half, the room is such a tender space. things were a little more nuanced for me than that when i wrote nlsn, or at least they felt that way-- everything feels complicated when you have a crush, doesn't it? every word and every look means something, and when you're fifteen and a songwriter and a little intoxicated and you and your friends have just been hanging out at your house for hours and your crush is there, everything means everything and so you just HAVE to go down into your parent's basement and write a song about it IMMEDIATELY.

it felt so complicated and stressful at the time-- i had known this person since i was like, 10 or 11, and we came from very different and somewhat incompatible backgrounds ("we were the same kids, just different sides of the dime"). we shared a friend group and i was so worried about coming on too strong and embarrassing her in front of our friends, but at the same time i felt like i simply could not contain my little teenage self's infatuation, so i needed to write it out ("can't afford to care if anyone else gets it").

it's a little funny to me how seriously i took it all (the part of the "i hope" section that ends on that em always feels so dramatic whenever i play it now) but looking back on it, it's also so sweet and innocent to have a cute little love song by a kid with a crush preserved. "i really wanted to show you my room and my bed" really nails it for me in particular, especially because i didn't really mean for the double entendre to happen, it was more just... come see a space that's special to me; i want to share it with you. not to mention the whole sweet like candy thing; it's all a little sneakily teeth rotting.

i've spoken mostly about the lyrics here because nlsn is probably one of my favorite songs i've ever written, but also because there's not a ton going on musically. i originally recorded it on an electric guitar because i didn't really have a good way of micing my acoustic at the time-- you're telling me a behringer wide diaphragm usb condenser ISNT a good all purpose mic?? but actually, i do think the way it picked up the very gentle string sounds contributed to this very sleepy, late night feeling. i originally put this out on a little EP called "hush" in 2018, which was all songs to fall asleep to. with any luck, more of those tracks will see the light of day in an updated form. i'm lucky i got the chance to re-record nlsn as my first spotify release (though admittedly there's a lot i would change if i was recording/mixing it now), but, at the risk of terminal demoitis, the original is really unreplaceable to me in all its genuinely lofi glory. this was a slightly deeper dive than i intended, but these are fun, and i hope you enjoy reading them! stay tuned for another coming soon, and thanks for reading!

Have you seen a therapist?

Oof 💀 That again. I did... Twice.

The first time I gave therapy a try, she somehow only made me feel worse about myself?? Almost to the point of making me drop out of college.

I wasn’t being treated for anxiety at the time and she would send me home with little assignments like “Go order food at a restaurant”, “Compliment a stranger”, “ask someone how their day is going”. All simple easy things when you don’t feel like the world is ending.

And at one point, I was going to college for education and she told me “It takes a certain kind of person to be a teacher…” so me and my low self esteem switched majors and did art. But her words haunted me and I switched to liberal arts where I could learn a little bit of everything in college, because I wanted to take fictional writing classes too.

But now every time I’m asked about my career choices and why I decided to not be a teacher/artist/other career path, I go “It takes a special kind of person…” and no one knows the horrible difference in my life that lady made.

That was just minimal advice she gave me when she would give me a chance to speak. Most of the time it was me listening to her talk about her times in college. As if knowing her route to drive to and from school was important to me. Or why she likes Harry Potter. Or why she has a cat instead of a husband. Or why the other therapist in the building is her best friend(they should get married, therapist-OTP. They go together. The other dude couldn’t help my brother either. My brother quit therapy after one week.)

Then about a month after dropping out of therapy, I found out her and the other therapist actually gossip about their patients when no one’s there???? Breaking rules much???

Basically, They’re not there to help, they’re there to be nosy and collect insurance money(because it was one of the only place where I live that the insurance would cover therapy.)

Soooo I decided never to do therapy around where I live again. Until my 2nd/3rd year of college where I was exposed to a traumatic event that dragged out over the course of a year. And so I went see a student therapist in training during that time and he was really the best thing that ever happened to me. He’d listen and give me real genuine advice. “Don’t kill that guy, call 911 for help if he gets out of hand.” (The situation was bad…)

I even told him about my past therapy experience and he was super nice and supportive, assuring me that what that lady was doing wasn’t what therapy was supposed to be.

Anyway, he was great. Got me into meditation and Lofi music to calm myself down. He’s probably the reason I start cloud gazing when I’m not doing anything else. When I was stuck on a problem he’d help walk me through it in baby steps. I love that he was never put off by any problems. He was so chill and just “let’s try and figure out a solution that works for you”.

I was sad that he was graduating college a year before me, but I did really well after seeing him for a year.

Best guy. 🙏🏻 I would’ve remembered his name for the rest of my life if I wouldn’t have had so much trouble spelling/pronouncing it. Long non-American names throw me off. 😵‍💫

Those were my experiences. Lady-Therapist and her Therapist-boyfriend traumatized me as far as getting help is concerned.

All I’m imagining her saying is “It takes a certain kind of person to walk this earth-“ NOT ME. NOT. ME. I’m by far, NOT a certain kind of person. I didn’t ask to be here as much as my parents didn’t ask to make me! Plus, I grew up sheltered in my adoptive family so now the real world is absolutely horrifying and I can’t handle a stable relationship because I end up self-sabotaging them with my trust-issues like “You can’t hurt me if I hurt me first!!”

Anyway, my point, I’m not seeing another therapist just yet. Not around where I live. I’m going to cope with a good game of Genshin Impact. My big brothers Diluc and Kaeya will take care of me. As well as my boyfriends Alhaitham and Kaveh. And my newly wedded husband, Neuvillette. ✨ All the therapy I need can be found in whacking monsters to death and harassing NPCs.

Kudos to anyone whose political or religious beliefs diverge from their parents’. That tends to impress me, regardless of what those new beliefs are.

I’m an idiot for titling this song “#AboutMe,” because it’s not about me.

“About Me” was made simultaneously with “Dancing Under The Sea (Song 79).” Switched my attention back and forth every few hours until both songs were finished. Throughout GoBoy 3, 4 and 5, attention was usually focused on one song at a time, but once in a while I’d shake up the production process to keep things interesting and do multiple songs at once.

For GoBoy 6, fifteen songs were produced simultaneously (songs 102 - 116). Too much.

The verse vocals were difficult to figure out how to mix in “About Me.” For the first few days of mixing, they simply weren’t meshing with the instruments. They stuck out like a sore thumb. After spending some time sifting through lofi plugin settings and adjusting them, adding that to the verse vocals solved the problem.

Lofi vocal effects are popular in pop rock music. The Killers use it for many of their songs (example: “Mr. Brightside”). Green Day uses it once in a while (example: “American Idiot”). Lofi plugins usually cut out lower frequencies and add some distortion to the vocals, making it sound like someone’s singing through an old radio transmission. When used in the right places, it sounds cool.

The creation of songs 74 - 79 was a really healthy creative period (during the height of the pandemic, oddly enough). High level of optimism and low stress. I cherish those times when they arise, because they don’t last.

This is GoBoy’s SUPER minimalistic phase. Some will be turned off by the simplicity of GoBoy 4 songs.

After dabbling in bubblegum pop for the 2nd half of GoBoy 3, my original plan was to focus on lyrically driven content for GoBoy 4. The release of ”Everything Will Be Okay (Song 69)” changed my mind, as the focus on dark lyrics impacted my mental state for months afterwards. Focusing on the dark elements of your own life for long enough can turn you into a neurotic mess (the original song “Everything Will Be Okay” had a 3rd verse the delved darker). My focus would shift to bubblegum pop from that point forward, which would impact this song. Music would be made for enjoyment and catchiness, not necessarily for conveying a message. I don’t regret this shift in focus… yet (excerpts from post 60).

In April, 2021, almost all of GoBoy 3, 4 and 5‘s songs were restructured to be under 3 minutes (preferably under 2m 30s), including this song. I became okay with releasing songs around the 2 min mark after realizing The Beatles and The Beach Boys had some songs around that length. In an attempt to increase replay value in this streaming era, most of GoBoy’s songs are now purposely around 2m 20s (excerpts from post 37).

A bass boost was added to songs 37-99 in Nov, 2021, while I was stuck at home with covid. As a result, this song feels more powerful. The bass boost isn’t a simple plugin nonchalantly added to each song. It’s a process that took about 3.5 hours per song, or one whole month to complete all songs. Admittedly, I pushed the bass boost a little too far for some of them. The bass in some songs sounds like a freaking earthquake (unnecessarily pronounced low frequencies 20 - 50 Hz). Might dial that back someday. The bass boost was also applied to every song on GoBoy 6 and beyond (excerpt from post 37).

Meet ISEA, a New Jersey native who rediscovered self-love in her latest EP, "Universe Ready"

Recently, I had the opportunity to interview an incredibly talented music artist who goes by the name Isea. Isea powers through vulnerability in her music. She touches on very genuine and personal thoughts in her songs, with lyrics that are very relatable to the average 20-something who has experienced their fair share of heartache. Isea, better known by her close friends as Sophia, is a former classmate of mine. I’ve been able to watch Sophia grow her professional music career by staying connected with her on social media. And in classic Gen Z fashion, I reached out to her through a direct message on Instagram asking if she’d be interested in participating in this interview. Within a few hours, she eagerly agreed to be the subject of today’s blog post. So keep reading, and I hope that by getting to know Isea, you wind up discovering a new artist that you love! 

I’ll begin by giving you the floor and allowing you to introduce yourself. Who is Isea?

 My name is Sophia, and I am from the little town of North Bergen in New Jersey. I am a senior at NYU studying Music Technology, and I am a singer who is trying to break into the music industry head first. ISEA is my fun and fabulous stage name. To start, who is Isea? I always get questions on how to pronounce it, which is valid. When I perform, I pronounce my name like "Isaiah". Funny story, Isea was actually a name that my Mom gave me back when I was 12 and trying to find an Instagram username. Isea quite literally is my initials SEA with an i slapped in front. I started singing when I was 8 and it was mainly in my grade school chorus group.  I started playing guitar at 13,  and then started writing music. It took me a while to  find my own sound,  without trying to sound too much like any other artist. Essentially, it took me a while to really be comfortable in my own skin and within my thoughts and words that I was putting into my music. By junior year of college, I finally put out my first album which I wrote, recorded, produced, and all that fun stuff, by myself. Through that release, I have now been performing around NYC and finding where else my music will take me.

Did anything/anyone inspire you to create music?

 Yes! I had many different influences to start writing music. Firstly, I come from a Puerto Rican and Cuban household, so I grew up with a lot of Celia Cruz and Daddy Yankee playing in the kitchen, or in the car with my parents. My parents were also big fans of Lauryn Hill. I would say she single-handedly had such a GREAT influence on my music, and the messages that I wanted to put into my work. I also was heavily involved in Spoken Word Club in High School and I felt as though at one point I realized "I can take this, and put it to music, and make it hit harder, really drive it home".

If you could collaborate with any musician who would it be and why?

Lauryn Hill, simple, she is literally my idol. Yebba, I would cry if I met her, and her music is not out in the world enough. Allen Stone, his voice is butter, and his personality is so fun and bubbly.

Describe your creative process when you write and record new music.

 I've flipped through a few different processes since starting college. Sometimes, I go through R&B lofi beats that are looped for like 5 hours, and write whatever comes to mind. Sometimes I'll see an artsy sign with a quote while walking to class, and then that's my next song. Whenever I have enough of an idea, whether it's a few words or maybe even a few sections of music I recorded, I'll either follow through with the idea and make it come to life OR go to my two main people I write with. My guitarist, Sarah, is absolutely amazing, and most times if I have the bare bones of a song, she knows exactly what I'm talking about and she'll piece together an entire song. My best friend Chris is my pianist, and also with him, we just speak the same language and he knows exactly what I'm trying to convey with the smallest pieces that I provide.

A lot of the songs on your EP, Universe Ready, dive into a very vulnerable place. You touch on the unexplainable emotions brought on by anxiety about getting older in the track “Growing Pains,” as well as regret about settling for less than you deserve in past relationships in the track “Bare Minimum.” Is there anything you took away from the experience of creating your EP? Was it therapeutic, in a way, to sort of air out all of these emotions through a creative outlet? 

I've never been asked that to be very honest. I think for a very long time, I was always scratching the surface with putting out any form of my own music. I would post things on Instagram, dabble in Tik Tok video scene, or make YouTube videos of covers. Universe Ready is because quite literally I felt like I was ready and the universe was ready for it. I believe in everything happening at the right time, but not the time that YOU think it's supposed to happen. 

I think it was extremely therapeutic. I went through a BAD heartbreak, which is what you commonly hear from people who drop music I feel (haha).  I fell out of love with myself, was unmotivated to write anything throughout the relationship, and once it was over, WOW the amount of content I had was just overflowing. Like you said in your question, "Growing Pains" was about the struggle of realizing growing up truly is more difficult than it's made out to be. "Bare Minimum" was the realization that I accepted less and less from a partner and took it for Gold Star Material. The album really helped me feel more myself, LOVE MYSELF, and find myself in my music again. Universe Ready is something I am very proud of.

What was the hardest track for you to write?

The hardest songs to write were definitely between "Growing Pains" and "Bare Minimum". I wrote "Growing Pains" freshman year of college, with Sarah, my guitarist. This was our first time writing music together, let alone we had only hung out a few times before that moment. We wrote this song in 20 minutes. Though it spilled itself onto a page effortlessly, I think it was still one of the more emotional songs. I was away from home in college for the first time and realized that I am having to grow up very quickly.

"Bare Minimum".....I wrote it literally HOURS after being broken up with. I was, evidently, angry, haha. It was hard to write because it was one of the first times I was putting to words, and to paper, how bad the relationship was for SO LONG. The lyric "I would get excited, just to get invited, and you would leave your wallet at home," TRUE STORY. It was also the realization that it's not just me! I had so many friends who had, and STILL HAVE, relationships where they're accepting the bare minimum. I think another reason it was so hard to write was because I was keeping their feelings in mind and thinking "OMG, what if he hears it, and his feelings get hurt, and then other people know". I got over that very quickly, because I kept in mind like I mentioned before, I stayed quiet for so long, was hurt for so long, and it was time for my side to be heard and valid. That's all I ever wanted.

Is there any artist that you’ve been infatuated with recently? What's your favorite song by them? 

Kenny Beats!!!! "Last Words" is just a vibe. I can't believe that his songs are maybe a minute to a minute and a half long. SO much good music and ideas in such short pieces.

If you can have the readers remember one thing about you, what would it be?

Yes, yes, yes. I spent too much time not doing things that fed my soul, and made ME happy. So, one thing about me is that I find something, one thing, anything, if not daily then weekly, that feeds my soul. Music, food, going out for a walk, and I carry that with me. I would love it if the readers would do the same. AND stay tuned for more music coming soon :)
